00:00:01.600 --> 00:00:04.000
Welcome to the Awakening Church podcast.

00:00:04.240 --> 00:00:08.960
We pray this message encourages you and provides the hope and light of Jesus Christ.

00:00:09.199 --> 00:00:10.640
Thanks for tuning in.

00:00:12.160 --> 00:00:13.759
Good morning, Awakening Church.

00:00:13.839 --> 00:00:17.039
My name is Felicia Larson, and I'm one of the pastors here on staff.

00:00:17.120 --> 00:00:23.120
And it is my joy to get to be with you this morning to close out our series, Eat This Book.

00:00:23.359 --> 00:00:28.640
Today, I just want to say first and foremost, happy Black History Month.

00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:38.159
As I've been planning for this message, Black History Month has been just in the back of my mind as I've thought about communally eating this book together.

00:00:38.320 --> 00:00:39.439
What does that look like?

00:00:39.679 --> 00:00:41.039
What does that sound like?

00:00:41.280 --> 00:00:44.960
And just what is that gonna look like for us today?

00:00:45.119 --> 00:00:56.479
So I want to start by saying, number one, have you noticed that there's nobody quite like black folks that do a potluck or cookout or the family reunion?

00:00:56.719 --> 00:01:04.879
There are even TV shows and movies that focus on this aspect of black culture, like soul food and queen sugar.

00:01:05.200 --> 00:01:09.439
And then there's even a Netflix original entitled Family Reunion.

00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:13.760
At the family reunion, folks got their matchin' t-shirts on.

00:01:13.840 --> 00:01:18.560
So you know who's part of which family, which cousin belongs to Uncle and Aunt So-and-so.

00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:25.280
And what I love most about the family reunion, though, is that everybody brings their best dish.

00:01:25.519 --> 00:01:31.599
You know they're ready to show off their grandma's mac and cheese, their friends down the street.

00:01:31.680 --> 00:01:36.159
They're gonna bring the most beautiful peach cobbler.

00:01:36.319 --> 00:01:41.439
Not in this little bitty tin, but in the deep dish Pyrex 9 by 13.

00:01:41.760 --> 00:01:48.000
And then there's the uncle's brisket that's been smoked all night, and you got the best flavors coming from it.

00:01:48.159 --> 00:01:50.079
And then there's the banana pudding.

00:01:50.319 --> 00:01:51.280
Oh my goodness.

00:01:51.439 --> 00:01:57.200
And just in case you're wondering, I'm known for my sweet potato salad.

00:01:57.599 --> 00:02:03.840
Little, you know, oh, none of that sweet relish, pickle relish, and some mustard base.

00:02:04.239 --> 00:02:04.879
So good.

00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:11.520
Now, while I've got you sufficiently hungry and probably thinking about your Super Bowl snacks, come back with me.

00:02:11.680 --> 00:02:12.319
Stay with me.

00:02:12.479 --> 00:02:15.199
What does this have to do with studying the Bible in community?

00:02:15.360 --> 00:02:29.039
Well, I'll tell you, what people tend to do at a cookout and what we do in communal Bible study is everyone brings their own special flavor to what we're studying, what we're eating, what we're bringing together.

00:02:29.199 --> 00:02:36.240
People are representing who they are, putting their own signature on something that we may have had before.

00:02:36.479 --> 00:02:41.919
It's like same dish, new experience.

00:02:42.240 --> 00:02:52.240
Because when you're in contact with different people, they have their personal background, their family history, and their cultural context that they bring to the table.

00:02:52.479 --> 00:02:56.400
Here's how Scott McKnight says it in his book, The Blue Parakeet.

00:02:56.719 --> 00:03:03.599
No matter who you are, when we open the Bible, we read it through what we already believe.

00:03:03.840 --> 00:03:13.759
Yes, what we believe can be challenged by the Bible and lead us to do shifts, but we can't deny this important starting point.

00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:19.599
We start where we are, and where we are is what we already believe.

00:03:20.560 --> 00:03:25.280
Okay, so let's go back to the food for a second, and this what we are is what we believe.

00:03:25.599 --> 00:03:29.759
Mac and cheese, most of us have some sort of frame of reference for it.

00:03:29.919 --> 00:03:32.080
You know, the blue box mac and cheese.

00:03:32.400 --> 00:03:36.560
When you think about it, you're like, yeah, I've had it before.

00:03:36.719 --> 00:03:53.120
But if that's your only frame of reference, your mind will be blown when you peel back the foil at the family reunion to reveal this luscious, yellow, bubbly, gooey goodness that could never come from a box, friends.

00:03:53.520 --> 00:04:06.960
And that's why, studying the Bible and community, you bring all of who you are, and so does everyone else, to reveal something different and amazing and beautiful about God's word.

00:04:07.680 --> 00:04:11.919
Let's take a look in Acts chapter 2, verses 42 through 47.

00:04:12.240 --> 00:04:17.839
Now, I'm not gonna do a deep dive about the context of this verse because come back next week.

00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:22.480
We're starting a new series upcoming called Future Church.

00:04:22.720 --> 00:04:31.040
But Acts chapter 2, verses 42 through 47 put in context for us and illustrate for us something beautiful about fellowship.

00:04:31.279 --> 00:04:38.879
It says this they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:43.839
Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.

00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:46.639
All the believers were together and had everything in common.

00:04:46.800 --> 00:04:50.959
They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

00:04:51.120 --> 00:05:07.439
Every day they continued to meet together in the temple, and they broke bread in their homes, and they ate together and with glad and sincere hearts, praising God, enjoying favor of all people, and the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

00:05:08.800 --> 00:05:13.600
Here we see the combination of studying together, the apostles' teaching.

00:05:13.759 --> 00:05:18.720
We see breaking bread, we see meeting in each other's homes and eating together.

00:05:18.959 --> 00:05:25.519
Here is this combination of bringing family favorites and their family backgrounds together.

00:05:25.759 --> 00:05:32.319
So let's consider this in the early church and connect it to how we study scripture together today.

00:05:32.800 --> 00:05:50.560
As people come to the table to study the Word of God together, each person comes with their personal and family history, their experiences, their faith traditions, denominational backgrounds they may have interacted with from the past, and their own cultural expressions.

00:05:51.040 --> 00:05:59.439
And because of this, the different things that they hold to and hold meaning for them in the scriptures will be different from mine.

00:06:00.079 --> 00:06:09.519
They will be asking different questions than I will ask, and others will see things that I can't or don't see.

00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:20.639
See, that's the beauty of studying with other people, because the things that hold meaning for them as I get to know them will influence how I then see passages of scripture.

00:06:20.879 --> 00:06:29.759
They will ask different questions, which will help me to understand why they ask those questions and begin to ask those questions myself of the text.

00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:32.560
Okay, let's let's be more practical about this.

00:06:32.720 --> 00:06:41.680
Okay, someone who's adopted in scripture, when they hear the words orphan or adoption, they're going to process those verses very personally.

00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:50.800
A widow will read scriptures very differently than a single person or a married person when we look at relationships and marriage in the Bible.

00:06:51.040 --> 00:06:57.360
A foreigner or an immigrant will hear passages about their specific group differently than a native-born person.

00:06:57.920 --> 00:07:06.079
A woman will read passages referring to women with a gut-level understanding of how that application will impact her.

00:07:06.959 --> 00:07:12.720
And the Bible is set in an agrarian context, agriculture and farming.

00:07:12.879 --> 00:07:22.639
And while that context for us is very different, even an American farmer and a rancher will understand that better than a city dweller like me.

00:07:23.600 --> 00:07:28.000
It's our careers and our jobs that even inform how we approach the text.

00:07:28.079 --> 00:07:37.839
So as we come together around the table, my friends who are engineers may be more methodical in their approach to the text and see details that I don't.

00:07:38.399 --> 00:07:48.639
An artist may see and color and may hear the melody of the Psalms in a different way than I do, may feel the cadence in the way that something is laid out in scripture.

00:07:48.879 --> 00:07:56.319
And the hidden pieces of the story may come alive in the way that they help me to understand by what they hear and see.

00:07:56.560 --> 00:08:01.920
A medical professional may be drawn to the healings of Jesus differently than I am.

00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:12.560
Now then there's the English teacher who's looking at the grammar and composition of God's word and pulls out the verbs and nouns and adjectives in a way that makes the text come alive.

00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:22.000
What I love to do is study scripture with people who are younger than me, and I get this opportunity every week with our protege cohort and leading my small group.

00:08:22.240 --> 00:08:28.319
And the thing I love about it is that there are questions that I feel like I've settled a long time ago.

00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:44.320
But when a young person brings their frame of reference to a particular scripture or things that I've accepted long ago, and then they ask a question in a different way, it makes me wrestle with the text differently than I have before.

00:08:44.559 --> 00:08:48.000
It's such a joy to do Bible study with young people.

00:08:48.240 --> 00:09:01.200
And then it's our elders that bring their lived experience and their different experiences of walking with Jesus over a long period of time that inform how we see things.

00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:23.440
He is famed for liberation in black theology, and he was trying to understand why his parents could believe in a Jesus that others who oppressed them also believed in.

00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:38.559
He was explaining through his study of theology and his search that trying to hold on to why his parents held on to this Jesus, why his parents would be informed by a Jesus that was believed by people who hated them.

00:09:39.360 --> 00:10:01.759
The thing I love about James Cohn and his telling, giving that accolade to his parents is that we benefit in community by the elders' faith, by understanding that what has kept them going, what they've seen and been through, things that I haven't been through, but has helped them to persist in their faith.

00:10:02.399 --> 00:10:12.639
Being in community with the elders lets us know that there are dark valleys that we can go through and our faith can be tested, and we remain faithful.

00:10:13.679 --> 00:10:18.559
That can only happen though, oftentimes, with people who have lived experience longer than we have.

00:10:19.600 --> 00:10:27.600
But this is why it's also easy to say that the Christian life is not just difficult to do alone.

00:10:28.159 --> 00:10:30.559
It's impossible to do alone.

00:10:31.440 --> 00:10:48.159
You see, we need each other so that we hear God's word differently, that we see it differently, that we feel it differently, that we walk it out differently than we would have if our lives were not informed by others we are in community with.

00:10:48.799 --> 00:10:56.240
As we are informed by and questioned by and challenged by the faith of another person's journey, it shapes who we are.

00:10:57.200 --> 00:11:04.720
Okay, so you might be thinking to yourself, Felicia, that all sounds great, but being in community is not all fellowship, food, and fun.

00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:06.799
And you're right, you got me.

00:11:06.879 --> 00:11:14.960
I'm hyping up all the great parts of it because there is some balance and some encouragement and support that we need from being in community.

00:11:15.120 --> 00:11:20.159
And yet I am not so naive to think that things don't happen.

00:11:20.399 --> 00:11:26.799
But here's what I will tell you first and foremost: that being in community leads to spiritual formation.

00:11:27.120 --> 00:11:30.080
And from your pastor of spiritual formation, you're welcome.

00:11:30.240 --> 00:11:31.919
Here's what the shorthand of that means.

00:11:32.080 --> 00:11:37.840
That's just a nice way of saying spiritual formation, that your imperfections will be exposed.

00:11:38.080 --> 00:11:42.480
And you can either choose to run or stay and grow.

00:11:43.519 --> 00:11:52.159
That is the gift of community is the highlighting of our imperfections in a space for people who love us.

00:11:52.720 --> 00:11:57.360
And then we choose whether we're gonna run or stay and grow.

00:11:57.679 --> 00:12:05.519
Community refines our character, highlighting ways that we are potentially becoming more like Jesus, I hope, but sometimes not.

00:12:05.759 --> 00:12:07.120
Here's what I mean.

00:12:07.440 --> 00:12:12.480
We can think that we are so good when we're on our own until something gets tested.

00:12:12.639 --> 00:12:19.840
So I could think I'm patient and I'm kind and I'm loving and I'm forgiving until somebody tries my patience.

00:12:20.080 --> 00:12:24.639
And then I have to be kind and forgiving because they've been rude to me.

00:12:25.279 --> 00:12:28.960
That is sometimes what happens in community.

00:12:29.200 --> 00:12:31.759
It isn't all fun, fellowship, and food.

00:12:32.080 --> 00:12:35.840
Let me share with you an illustration from the late Dr.

00:12:36.080 --> 00:12:39.919
Steve Korch, my beloved professor from Western Seminary.

00:12:40.080 --> 00:12:41.759
He shared this in one of his classes.

00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:50.240
He compared the Christian community to putting various stones into a rock polisher, or also called a tumbler, that you'll see here.

00:12:50.559 --> 00:12:59.519
The space is tight, the rocks are shoved in there, and what you're seeing is the pretty ending, but let me explain to you how they look going in.

00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:14.159
See, the rocks are rough and they're covered in debris, and when this door is closed on them, the sound is loud and screechy and tumbly, and it's just so loud at the start.

00:13:14.480 --> 00:13:27.679
Because what's happening is the debris is being pushed up against each other, and the rocks are bumping up against one another, and what happens is that something starts to take shape and the appearance starts to change.

00:13:27.919 --> 00:13:36.639
And while the tumbler never gets fully quiet, it does achieve a smoother and more rhythmic sound.

00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:41.759
And this is the end product shiny, beautiful rocks.

00:13:42.720 --> 00:14:10.960
What I love about this illustration is that what you'll see with these stones is that they don't come out uniform, but they come out unique, smoother, and with that more rhythmic sound that I talked about, because that is the sound of unity, not uniformity, where people can bring all of themselves into a space, bump up against each other, be shaped and formed, and bring out the glorious riches that God has in them.

00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:12.799
That's what community does.

00:14:13.120 --> 00:14:25.279
John 17 says that Jesus prayed for unity, and he even said that there was this unity was the way that the world could judge the fruitfulness of his earthly ministry.

00:14:25.919 --> 00:14:28.639
John 17, 21 says that.

00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:31.919
So, church, this is why unity is important.

00:14:32.960 --> 00:14:48.240
Well, people are not rocks, but God throws us into community with each other, and we can choose whether or not we are going to be a safe space for people to work out things, or if we're going to engage in cancel culture.

00:14:48.879 --> 00:14:50.159
Trigger warning.

00:14:50.399 --> 00:14:56.240
In light of our last year and recent events, what I'm about to say may trigger some stuff for you.

00:14:56.480 --> 00:15:09.759
Before you shut down or excuse yourself, I want to ask you to just listen and then ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what it is he wants to apply to your life.

00:15:10.080 --> 00:15:10.399
Okay.

00:15:10.960 --> 00:15:20.240
As I was studying this, one of the things that surprised me was that this safe spaces and cancel culture actually came from the same generation.

00:15:20.399 --> 00:15:25.120
They're only about 10 years apart in their introduction into our linguistic system.

00:15:25.279 --> 00:15:40.399
Safe spaces, a place that provides a physically and emotionally safe environment for a person or group of people, especially a place where people can freely express themselves without fear of prejudice or negative judgment.

00:15:41.120 --> 00:15:44.879
And then there's cancel culture, our newfound favorite.

00:15:45.120 --> 00:15:57.919
The phenomenon or practice of publicly rejecting, boycotting, or ending support for particular people or groups because of their socially or morally unacceptable views or actions.

00:16:00.320 --> 00:16:03.279
Before I go any further, let me say this.

00:16:10.559 --> 00:16:22.960
But what I am saying is that in community, we must make space for people to discover their abusive, toxic, and hateful ways in community.

00:16:23.519 --> 00:16:35.919
For those in personal relationships, this is where therapy comes in, where you invite the ears and eyes of another person, and therefore you create a community with which to get more healthy in your relationship.

00:16:37.039 --> 00:16:49.919
Let me take a look at scripture with you, because I think we need to see how Jesus dealt with people who were difficult, because we're so quick to cancel people, but Jesus ran with a rough crowd.

00:16:50.080 --> 00:16:53.519
So let's take a look at some of the people Jesus contended with.

00:16:53.840 --> 00:16:58.159
Matthew 20 shows us James and John, the sons of Zebedee.

00:16:58.399 --> 00:17:09.039
What's funny about this passage is these two brothers come with their mother to plead their case for a position of power in the kingdom of God when Jesus returns.

00:17:09.279 --> 00:17:16.480
So these two brothers come with their mother, and the mother says, Can one of my sons sit on your right hand in the kingdom when you return?

00:17:17.119 --> 00:17:23.599
And Jesus didn't even answer the mother, not because she was a woman, but because he knew that the question didn't come from her.

00:17:23.759 --> 00:17:27.519
She was just supposed to be the muscle to make sure that they got what they wanted.

00:17:27.759 --> 00:17:32.640
But Jesus turned to the two brothers and said, Do you even know what you're asking for?

00:17:33.279 --> 00:17:37.440
Do you realize that that power doesn't belong to me to give that position away?

00:17:37.680 --> 00:17:41.759
But besides that, can you drink the cup that I'm about to drink?

00:17:41.920 --> 00:17:43.519
Can you suffer what I'm about to suffer?

00:17:43.680 --> 00:17:48.480
And the brashness and arrogance and presumptive thinking of these two brothers, they said, Yes, we can.

00:17:48.640 --> 00:17:50.559
And Jesus said, And you will.

00:17:51.279 --> 00:17:53.039
There was gonna be some persecution.

00:17:53.119 --> 00:17:55.279
There were gonna be difficult days for them.

00:17:55.519 --> 00:18:00.319
But what Jesus responded to was their arrogance and their presumptive thinking with a question.

00:18:00.559 --> 00:18:01.839
Can you do this?

00:18:02.319 --> 00:18:04.480
You don't know what you're asking for.

00:18:04.960 --> 00:18:09.200
A question and a direct comment rather than cancellation.

00:18:09.680 --> 00:18:12.160
Matthew 16 shows us Peter, Mr.

00:18:12.319 --> 00:18:16.160
Impulsive Peter, the one who jumps out of the boat without thinking, walking on the water.

00:18:16.319 --> 00:18:19.200
Impulsive Peter who says, I will never deny you.

00:18:19.440 --> 00:18:22.960
Impulsive Peter who cuts off the ear of the guard in the garden.

00:18:23.359 --> 00:18:25.039
Yes, Peter.

00:18:25.440 --> 00:18:32.720
But what he does in this instance in Matthew 16 is he pulls Jesus to the side and starts rebuking Jesus for saying that he's going to the cross.

00:18:32.960 --> 00:18:37.519
And Jesus turns to him and matter-of-factly says, Get behind me, Satan.

00:18:37.839 --> 00:18:41.119
Now many people have questioned throughout the years, what does that mean?

00:18:41.519 --> 00:18:44.480
Did Satan like all of a sudden just take over Peter's body?

00:18:44.640 --> 00:18:46.559
And I would suggest to you, no.

00:18:47.039 --> 00:18:50.000
But think about the thoughts that you have throughout the day.

00:18:50.240 --> 00:18:54.799
Not every thought that comes to your mind is from you, is from a healthy, good place.

00:18:55.279 --> 00:19:00.799
Some things are just suggested to our minds whether or not we'll hold on to them and speak them out of our mouths.

00:19:01.039 --> 00:19:14.880
So when Jesus turned to Peter and said, get behind me, Satan, what he was saying was, the thought that you have now taken captive and put out of your mouth came not from you, but from the source beyond you, which was the enemy.

00:19:15.119 --> 00:19:25.440
Because who else would not want Jesus to go to the cross other than the enemy of our souls, who know that Jesus going to the cross would free us from sin and death?

00:19:26.480 --> 00:19:34.160
So, but Jesus spoke directly to Peter based on this loving relationship that they had, telling him, Your thinking's out of line.

00:19:34.799 --> 00:19:42.000
That's what we get to do in community with people, rather than cancel them, talk to them about their thinking being out of line.

00:19:42.720 --> 00:19:50.880
And then there's Mark 14, the Passover feast in Bethany, where greed is revealed.

00:19:51.119 --> 00:20:00.000
People are sitting around a table, and this young woman comes in with this alabaster jar of this beautiful perfume, and she begins to anoint Jesus' head.

00:20:00.240 --> 00:20:06.480
And everybody's talking about her and rebuking her and saying how much money they could have gotten for that, and she's wasting it on Jesus.

00:20:06.640 --> 00:20:10.480
He's sitting right there, and they say this about him and about what she's doing.

00:20:10.640 --> 00:20:16.079
Jesus turns to them and says, Stop, leave her alone.

00:20:16.400 --> 00:20:17.920
Do you not realize what she's doing?

00:20:18.000 --> 00:20:19.599
She's preparing me for burial.

00:20:19.759 --> 00:20:24.720
And wherever the gospel is preached, what she's doing today will be remembered.

00:20:25.359 --> 00:20:28.880
And 2,000 years later, here we are, still talking about her.

00:20:29.039 --> 00:20:42.720
Jesus pronounced a blessing on her and corrected their bad way of looking at what she was doing and called out their greed in the way that he approached them with what they said about her.

00:20:44.079 --> 00:20:50.960
Not cancellation, but honest communication and a blessing pronounced on the person who was doing the right thing.

00:20:51.680 --> 00:20:57.759
Lastly, there's Thomas in John 20, who Thomas is called the doubter.

00:20:57.920 --> 00:21:00.720
Jesus rebuked him for his lack of faith.

00:21:01.359 --> 00:21:05.839
And yet, what Jesus does to Thomas in this moment is beautiful.

00:21:06.400 --> 00:21:11.920
So Jesus shows up after resurrection to the disciples in the upper room.

00:21:12.799 --> 00:21:15.359
And Thomas wasn't there.

00:21:16.160 --> 00:21:23.759
And they said, Well, but he he arose, we saw him, and Thomas said, Until I see him with my own eyes and touch him, I won't believe it.

00:21:25.279 --> 00:21:32.559
And rather than just rebuking Thomas and saying, Oh, you have little faith, what Jesus says is, Come close.

00:21:33.279 --> 00:21:37.200
Put your hands in my scars, put your hand in my side.

00:21:38.400 --> 00:21:46.240
You see, Jesus, rather than canceling people, had different responses for different people based on who they were and the relationship he had with them.

00:21:46.960 --> 00:21:50.000
For some, he said, Come close, touch me.

00:21:50.799 --> 00:21:54.400
I need you to understand that I am who I say I am.

00:21:56.799 --> 00:21:59.599
How does this translate to what we are supposed to be?

00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:01.359
Like in community?

00:22:01.519 --> 00:22:05.359
Well, Jesus contended with people, which is says to wrestle with them.

00:22:05.519 --> 00:22:11.200
1 Corinthians 13 tells us that love suffers long, but it perseveres.

00:22:11.359 --> 00:22:13.519
That's what Jesus calls us to.

00:22:14.880 --> 00:22:15.200
Dr.

00:22:15.279 --> 00:22:21.920
Vincent Bacon, a professor of theology at Wheaton College, encapsulated this in a very short statement.

00:22:22.160 --> 00:22:26.319
The Christian faith is not about cancel culture 101.

00:22:26.640 --> 00:22:31.119
It's about living with difficult people, 101.

00:22:32.400 --> 00:22:40.400
He unpacks this phrase with a longer quote, and I want you to hear it because it just makes the point so well.

00:22:41.440 --> 00:22:49.039
No Christian who is going to love their neighbor as themselves wants people to approach them as someone that's canceled.

00:22:49.519 --> 00:22:56.960
They want to be understood for their complexity rather than being dismissed because of a dimension of their complexity.

00:22:57.200 --> 00:23:00.880
The quote continues: The easy route is just to cancel people.

00:23:01.119 --> 00:23:06.960
The problem is we have to ask ourselves, do I want to be canceled because of my imperfections?

00:23:07.200 --> 00:23:09.200
What kind of mercy do we want?

00:23:09.359 --> 00:23:12.160
What kind of generosity do we want towards us?

00:23:12.400 --> 00:23:16.000
How much of an explainer do we want to be able to give?

00:23:16.240 --> 00:23:20.480
Or do we want people to look at us and say, you get no explainer, you're out.

00:23:21.039 --> 00:23:25.440
We need to be those who exercise that generosity toward others.

00:23:25.759 --> 00:23:30.400
This is a version of loving your neighbor as yourself.

00:23:32.720 --> 00:23:33.359
Whew.

00:23:34.319 --> 00:23:36.480
Just let that sink in for a second.

00:23:37.680 --> 00:23:40.960
This is not cancel culture 101, friends.

00:23:41.119 --> 00:23:44.960
This is life with difficult people 101.

00:23:46.400 --> 00:23:51.920
And if you think that's just a man's words in the 21st century, you'd be wrong.

00:23:53.200 --> 00:24:00.319
Because Paul in Galatians 6, verses 1 through 3, says something very similar.

00:24:00.720 --> 00:24:12.880
Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path.

00:24:13.119 --> 00:24:17.039
And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself.

00:24:17.279 --> 00:24:21.440
Share each other's burdens and in this same way obey the law of Christ.

00:24:21.680 --> 00:24:27.039
If you think you are too important to help someone else, you are fooling yourself.

00:24:27.920 --> 00:24:30.079
You are not that important.

00:24:32.000 --> 00:24:37.839
What I love about what Paul says here is he starts with relationship, brothers and sisters.

00:24:38.000 --> 00:24:47.759
And then he reminds us to do this gently and humbly, being careful because we might fall into the same temptation and need someone to restore us.

00:24:48.000 --> 00:24:50.400
And how do we want them to do it?

00:24:50.880 --> 00:24:59.440
And then remembering we're not too important to spend time with our brother and sister getting them back on the right path.

00:25:00.319 --> 00:25:17.839
Community offers us the opportunity to engage people in their complexity, reflecting to them the good and bad of what they've said, helping them know how to process this information, and then leave room for critical thinking and learning.

00:25:18.160 --> 00:25:24.400
Sometimes the thought or idea that someone has, okay, it could be half-baked, I'll give you that.

00:25:24.640 --> 00:25:38.799
But if you just pounce on it in the moment and don't give people the chance to breathe and think out loud, how do they learn to critically think and put thoughts together in a way that they can then share with someone else?

00:25:39.119 --> 00:25:49.680
We have to leave space for people to think and to grow and to share what I say sometimes are the naive things that are not well informed.

00:25:50.400 --> 00:25:51.200
That happens.

00:25:51.279 --> 00:25:53.359
We've all been there at some point.

00:25:53.599 --> 00:25:55.519
And we've wanted grace.

00:25:57.119 --> 00:25:57.440
Okay.

00:25:58.480 --> 00:26:02.640
Let me follow this up by saying this because I don't want people to be confused.

00:26:02.720 --> 00:26:08.000
Because so those who engage in cancel culture and just want to get rid of people, this will be hard to hear.

00:26:08.240 --> 00:26:20.400
For those of you who may have been canceled or feel like you have been, or just feel like everybody's just being mean right now, whether it's social media or your friends, I want you to understand so that you don't get confused when I say canceled.

00:26:20.960 --> 00:26:26.319
Because sometimes people need to be corrected, and that's not being canceled.

00:26:27.440 --> 00:26:34.720
You may need to be held accountable to the values you say you believe in, but that's not being canceled.

00:26:35.839 --> 00:26:45.279
Someone may point out a flaw in your thinking or your attitude towards someone or another group of people, and that is not being canceled.

00:26:46.000 --> 00:27:01.119
Nor is someone setting boundaries around what they will and will not talk to you about anymore because they don't want to get into a fight and they would rather maintain the friendship or relationship than go down a rabbit trail with you every time they get together.

00:27:01.359 --> 00:27:04.480
Setting boundaries is not canceling you.

00:27:04.720 --> 00:27:05.920
It may hurt.

00:27:06.240 --> 00:27:12.559
You may feel like this person just doesn't get me or they don't love me enough to just let me be me and say what I want to say.

00:27:12.880 --> 00:27:20.880
But they wouldn't be your friend if they didn't correct you, if they didn't set boundaries, if they didn't hold you accountable.

00:27:21.359 --> 00:27:23.119
That's not cancellation.

00:27:23.279 --> 00:27:24.559
That's called love.

00:27:25.039 --> 00:27:26.799
That's called true friendship.

00:27:26.880 --> 00:27:30.480
And that's what we offer each other in the body of Christ.

00:27:31.759 --> 00:27:38.559
That's why at awakening, we find it really important to offer alternatives to what the world has.

00:27:39.119 --> 00:27:44.640
We get in groups and in community so that we can practice these things.

00:27:47.119 --> 00:28:07.519
We contemplate the word of God, the writings that are informed by God's word and shape our thinking, so that when we are talking with a friend, a family member, or a colleague, we are much better prepared with something life-giving rather than just a shrug of the shoulders or some cliche or slogan.

00:28:08.079 --> 00:28:10.880
We have the word of God on our side, friends.

00:28:11.200 --> 00:28:17.359
So, this moment we are living in needs a much more significant counsel.

00:28:17.599 --> 00:28:22.400
And the word of God is filled with words of wisdom and encouragement.

00:28:23.839 --> 00:28:26.000
People don't need our opinions.

00:28:26.480 --> 00:28:32.319
They need for us to come alongside them with the nourishment of the word of God.

00:28:32.559 --> 00:28:37.839
If we're gonna hold people accountable, if we're gonna correct them, let's do it with humility.

00:28:38.000 --> 00:28:42.000
Let's do it with as if our temptation could be the very same.

00:28:42.240 --> 00:28:48.079
To that end, awakening offers a variety of ways of engaging during the week in community.

00:28:48.240 --> 00:28:54.799
We have midweek groups, school of faith, our core classes, affinity groups to just have fun with each other.

00:28:54.960 --> 00:29:01.519
And then we have our new sermon, deep dive, midweek called the takeaway.

00:29:01.759 --> 00:29:08.960
These are all opportunities to stay engaged in community, learning and growing and having fun with other believers.

00:29:10.000 --> 00:29:12.559
We become like those we spend time with.

00:29:13.200 --> 00:29:16.240
Scripture tells us that in Proverbs 13, 20.

00:29:16.319 --> 00:29:24.799
Here's how the New Living Translation says it: Walk with the wise and become wise, associate with fools and get in trouble.

00:29:25.920 --> 00:29:44.000
There's a consistent diet of the word in community that brings us into a space where we can talk with people and wrestle with the text and try to come to a better understanding of how to apply it to our lives.

00:29:44.319 --> 00:30:06.720
Hopefully, we can have open dialogue without being criticized or canceled, simply being given space to hone our thinking in a safe space to hear out loud some of the things that we are wrestling with, and then being offered a variety of ways to see the biblical text and how to apply it to our lives.

00:30:07.440 --> 00:30:10.400
Sunday sermons, you don't get the chance to talk back.

00:30:10.480 --> 00:30:12.559
It's kind of a monologue right now, right?

00:30:13.119 --> 00:30:22.079
But when you are in community with others, you get the opportunity to cement your learning, to be accountable to people for how you're gonna live that out.

00:30:22.319 --> 00:30:28.880
That's how people grow by having accountability and by learning with others in community.

00:30:30.400 --> 00:30:33.359
Well, the table has been very well set the last few weeks.

00:30:33.519 --> 00:30:42.079
The first week we talked about the wisdom that's inherent in the Word of God and how it should necessitate the bulk of our spiritual nourishment.

00:30:42.480 --> 00:30:55.200
And then we've been given the practical tools like a knife and fork on how to engage at this table, getting that study Bible, getting an atlas, getting a Bible dictionary, those tools that you may need.

00:30:55.359 --> 00:31:08.240
And then this week, the communal aspect of what it's like to dive in at the table, coming together effectively and nourishing each other at the table.

00:31:09.920 --> 00:31:17.359
But here's the thing young people say it like this you can talk about it, now you gotta be about it.

00:31:17.680 --> 00:31:18.319
Right?

00:31:19.119 --> 00:31:21.920
Talk about it, be about it.

00:31:22.400 --> 00:31:23.839
We don't just want talk.

00:31:23.920 --> 00:31:25.839
We want you to live this out.

00:31:26.240 --> 00:31:33.759
Just because the table is set and you've been invited, you now have a choice about whether or not you're going to come.

00:31:34.799 --> 00:31:40.480
You see, it makes me think of that old adage of you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

00:31:41.519 --> 00:31:46.319
I can set a beautiful table, but I can't make you sit down and eat.

00:31:46.960 --> 00:31:51.680
It's up to you to pull out the chair and sit down.

00:31:52.480 --> 00:31:53.599
Show up.

00:31:54.960 --> 00:32:04.640
Because here's the thing these last three weeks, we've served up encouragement for getting into the word on your own and together.

00:32:05.119 --> 00:32:09.119
We've given you a Bible reading plan that I hope you've engaged with this last week.

00:32:09.440 --> 00:32:13.680
And you can do that day or night at whatever time fits your life.

00:32:14.799 --> 00:32:24.000
And then we are rounding out this experience and asking you will you do this in community, in accountability with people who love you?

00:32:24.559 --> 00:32:27.759
Yes, they'll challenge you, but it's because they love you.

00:32:29.359 --> 00:32:35.200
This is your invitation to the cookout, to the potluck, to the family reunion.

00:32:36.400 --> 00:32:38.799
We'll have a seat for you.

00:32:39.839 --> 00:32:40.880
Will you join us?

00:32:42.960 --> 00:32:43.839
Let's pray.

00:32:46.319 --> 00:32:53.920
Jesus, we thank you that you don't cancel people, but you choose to contend with and struggle with us.

00:32:54.799 --> 00:33:03.680
Thank you for the community that you spent time with when you were here on earth, showing us what it looks like to spend time in community with people who are different.

00:33:04.000 --> 00:33:20.079
Thank you for the gifts of different cultures and backgrounds and family expressions that enliven when we come to Scripture, that it's a new experience because we're with new people, hearing your word from their vantage point.

00:33:20.640 --> 00:33:32.240
Father, I pray that you would help us as we decide to get into community, knowing that our imperfections will be exposed, but I pray that they're done in a loving way.

00:33:32.960 --> 00:33:39.359
And that, God, that we would be held up and encouraged by getting into community with one another.

00:33:39.839 --> 00:33:44.799
Thank you, Father, for creating a family that we can all step into.

00:33:45.200 --> 00:33:48.960
And we look so forward to that reunion with you someday.

00:33:49.279 --> 00:33:51.599
In Jesus' name, amen.

00:33:53.359 --> 00:33:55.680
We hope you are blessed by this message.
