reveal that I think has happened over the last year or so is simply this. 00:05:14.560 --> 00:05:24.000 That the pandemic showed us that for many of us, I would say most of us, our definition of success lacks substance, didn't it? 00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:36.480 It lacks substance to really weather the storms, weather the crisis, weather the circumstances of our lives, that our success then was so fragile. 00:05:36.720 --> 00:05:41.839 And so, how do we redefine success to live out a purpose-filled life? 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:54.160 How do we embrace a new definition of success that that has the strength and the stability to weather whatever storms or circumstances you're going through? 00:05:54.319 --> 00:06:13.839 To do this, we're actually gonna look at um what some scholars say it was the apostles Paul's like failure, uh not a moral failure, like where he just he was doing on his missionary journey, and where they say, you know, he he missed the mark. 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:22.879 Not so many people responded to the gospel, and we're gonna learn some, I think, critical elements and how to redefine success. 00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:25.920 If you got your Bibles, open up to Acts chapter 17. 00:06:26.160 --> 00:06:29.360 Acts 17, we'll pick it up in verse 16. 00:06:29.519 --> 00:06:43.120 By way of context, Paul the apostle is going on his second missionary journey from the city of Antioch, and he took along with him uh a guy named Silas, a fellow uh helper in the ministry. 00:06:43.279 --> 00:06:46.160 Then he brought a young protege named Timothy. 00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:53.199 They've been traveling to the different cities where they had originally planted churches and just encouraging them, strengthening them. 00:06:53.360 --> 00:06:59.040 And then they continued on as they were traveling and began to reach new cities. 00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:07.120 They went to the city of uh Philippi in the Macedonian area, uh, and then and they saw just incredible success there. 00:07:07.199 --> 00:07:22.399 And then they went to Thessalonica and uh they saw God do incredible things and they had great opposition because like so many people were coming to Christ, and so there's like some Jewish people that are jealous, and they were just trying to, you know, stop what was happening. 00:07:22.560 --> 00:07:38.720 And and then the apostle Paul goes to Berea, and again, incredible success, but then there's also yet again incredible opposition, and so they had to get Paul out of the way, and and so they said, Hey, let's take you from Berea. 00:07:38.959 --> 00:07:46.319 We're gonna send you to Athens and travel down there and and kind of keep you, you know, out of the heat for a little bit. 00:07:46.480 --> 00:07:53.439 Let Paul let Silas and let Timothy do the work up here, and you just kind of hide out over in Athens. 00:07:53.519 --> 00:08:09.199 And so this is where we pick up the story of the Apostle Paul in Athens by accidents, and where he's never intended to come, and where others would say he really didn't fulfill or was very successful in Athens. 00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:18.879 Verse 16 says, while Paul was waiting for them, that is Silas and Timothy, and Athens, he was greatly distressed to see the city was full of idols. 00:08:19.040 --> 00:08:20.639 That's no understatement. 00:08:20.720 --> 00:08:30.399 In fact, Athens was the cultural city, uh uh the center city for culture, philosophy, uh, and um uh religion in this day. 00:08:30.560 --> 00:08:39.200 Even when Rome overtook it, Rome so wanted to be Greek uh that they continued to populate or perpetuate uh the Greek philosophy. 00:08:39.279 --> 00:08:42.960 I mean, this is the home of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle. 00:08:43.120 --> 00:08:49.840 And in Athens, it was said that there was more idols in Athens than all of Greece combined. 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:56.159 I mean, it was said that you could actually find or run into an idol more than you could run into a person there. 00:08:56.320 --> 00:08:58.720 I mean, it just was piled upon piled. 00:08:58.799 --> 00:09:02.879 There's one road that had so many, you couldn't really walk through this street. 00:09:03.039 --> 00:09:04.240 There were so many idols. 00:09:04.399 --> 00:09:05.279 No understatement. 00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:07.200 The city was full of idols. 00:09:07.360 --> 00:09:16.799 So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks as well in the marketplace, day by day, with those who happened to be there. 00:09:17.200 --> 00:09:29.440 And while he's seeing what's going on and seeing the pain in the city and their pursuit for uh God, but not really knowing how, he's like, I'm gonna reason with you. 00:09:29.519 --> 00:09:31.120 I want to bring the gospel and the good news. 00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:42.320 And so he's reasoning with Jews, he's reasoning with God-fearing Greeks, and then some Epicureans and Stoic philosophers begin to debate with them in the marketplace, and they they have this incredible debate going back and forth. 00:09:42.399 --> 00:09:55.519 And in fact, they start to make fun of Paul, say he's a babbler, and then others uh actually lodge a very serious uh you know accusation that he was promoting other religions. 00:09:55.759 --> 00:10:05.679 And this is actually the same accusation that Socrates, if you remember, 450 years later or before, had that he eventually was killed for. 00:10:05.840 --> 00:10:10.399 And so they said, Would you come to the Aragapus and would you come here? 00:10:10.480 --> 00:10:20.399 And this is this in world-famous center like uh of supreme counsel for religion, for philosophy. 00:10:20.480 --> 00:10:28.000 Uh, and this is not just a casual conversation, it's as if Paul is being on trial in this moment. 00:10:28.240 --> 00:10:29.279 I mean, it's incredible. 00:10:29.440 --> 00:10:39.200 He is in the Supreme Council of Athens that's known around the world, invited into this moment to share what he's been talking about on the streets. 00:10:39.360 --> 00:10:50.559 And so Paul then, verse 22, stood up at the meeting of the Aragopis and said, Uh, people of Athens, I see that in every way you're very religious. 00:10:50.720 --> 00:10:58.399 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription to an unknown God. 00:10:58.720 --> 00:11:01.519 So you're ignorant of the very thing you worship. 00:11:01.679 --> 00:11:04.159 And this is what I'm going to proclaim to you. 00:11:04.320 --> 00:11:08.559 And then he talks about the God who created all that there was. 00:11:08.720 --> 00:11:16.720 Then he talks about the God who sustained and is the sustainer of all that we have, that he's the ruler and that he's ultimately Father. 00:11:16.879 --> 00:11:22.960 He, in his speech, he actually quotes their own prophets and their uh the philosophers, rather. 00:11:23.120 --> 00:11:28.080 And he closes with the God who's revealed in Jesus through the resurrection. 00:11:28.639 --> 00:11:35.519 And this is where he kind of lost his audience because they didn't believe in a resurrection. 00:11:35.679 --> 00:11:42.720 And when they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, We want to hear you again on this subject. 00:11:43.039 --> 00:11:45.519 At that, Paul left the council. 00:11:45.679 --> 00:11:47.279 Some of the people became followers. 00:11:47.440 --> 00:11:51.279 If you have your others. 00:12:15.279 --> 00:12:23.120 What do we learn about redefining success from the Apostle Paul in Athens from his quote, maybe failure? 00:12:23.279 --> 00:12:27.759 Well, as we begin, I just want to give you a new definition for success. 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:34.559 Uh take it from Pete Schizero's book, Emotionally High, uh, Emotionally Um Healthy Disciples. 00:12:34.799 --> 00:12:46.399 In it, he says, according to Jesus, success, success is becoming the person God calls you to become and doing what God calls you to do in his way and according to his timetable. 00:12:46.559 --> 00:12:47.200 What is success? 00:12:47.279 --> 00:12:48.960 It's becoming, first and foremost. 00:12:49.039 --> 00:12:50.480 It's who you are becoming. 00:12:50.639 --> 00:12:53.600 And then it's simply doing what he's called you to do. 00:12:53.759 --> 00:12:56.720 We talked about that in week one, divine calling. 00:12:56.960 --> 00:13:10.480 And so I want to highlight three incredibly important areas for us if we're gonna really live a purpose-filled life where we need to redefine success in our lives. 00:13:10.559 --> 00:13:15.759 The first is simply here, here's what we learned from the apostle Paul and redefining success. 00:13:15.919 --> 00:13:18.159 Be present where God has placed you. 00:13:18.639 --> 00:13:21.039 Be present where God has placed you. 00:13:21.600 --> 00:13:29.440 The Apostle Paul had no intentions of going to Athens, it was not part of the plan. 00:13:30.320 --> 00:13:35.279 He had a plan, and it got completely messed up. 00:13:35.440 --> 00:13:39.519 He had a plan to follow this road and actually work his way all the way to Rome. 00:13:39.600 --> 00:13:41.039 Eventually, Rome got closed off. 00:13:41.279 --> 00:13:48.639 I don't know if you know, but Nero uh, you know, expelled all the Christians uh at one point, and uh he wasn't able to go to Rome even that way. 00:13:48.720 --> 00:13:53.200 But but because of persecution, because of what was happening, his plans got changed. 00:13:53.279 --> 00:13:56.639 He finds himself, he's not even with his team anymore. 00:13:56.960 --> 00:13:58.879 Silas and Timothy are still in Berea. 00:14:01.440 --> 00:14:03.279 And here's what he didn't do. 00:14:04.399 --> 00:14:08.080 He didn't go, well, you know, throw himself a pity party. 00:14:09.679 --> 00:14:10.879 This sucks. 00:14:36.320 He did what he did everywhere else. 00:14:37.759 --> 00:14:44.799 He did what God had called him to do, and everywhere he went, he began to speak with people about this Jesus who changed his life. 00:14:45.440 --> 00:14:46.960 He couldn't help it. 00:14:48.480 --> 00:14:54.879 He just went to, you know, first to the synagogue, then to the God-fearing Greeks, and then into the didn't choose that place, he wasn't intending to go to that place. 00:15:06.159 --> 00:15:13.519 That wasn't the place he really ever wanted to go, but he said, since I'm here, I'm gonna be present and do what God has called me to do in this place. 00:15:14.559 --> 00:15:21.120 I think some of us are missing out on what God has for us because we're complaining about the place we're in. 00:15:21.519 --> 00:15:27.600 We're complaining about I want to be in a different place, I want to live in a different place, I want to work at a different place, I want to have a different spouse. like, oh my gosh, it's so fun to watch everyone else live their best life on social media on Insta, and we can't go anywhere because we go anywhere, it's just a hot mess and nap time and all those 00:18:34.400 The apostle Paul had the great opportunity to preach the gospel to the world-renowned Supreme Council of Athens. 00:18:35.440 --> 00:18:41.599 Had he not been present in that moment, he would have missed out on one of the greatest opportunities of his entire life. 00:18:41.759 --> 00:18:51.759 I would just wonder, I just wonder if few of us are missing out on incredible opportunities
