00:04:35.600 --> 00:04:39.199 Don't you want a fresh encounter with Jesus? 00:04:40.399 --> 00:04:48.720 See, I'd like to suggest that God wants more for us than we're currently getting in our gatherings together. 00:04:49.519 --> 00:04:52.959 He wants more for you than you're currently getting. 00:04:53.279 --> 00:05:02.000 And listen up, he wants more from you, from us, than we're currently giving. 00:05:03.600 --> 00:05:06.079 You know, I remember I was nine or ten. 00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:11.839 My family had just moved from Texas to Santa Cruz, California. 00:05:12.079 --> 00:05:16.800 My dad was the new senior pastor at Santa Cruz Bible Church. 00:05:17.120 --> 00:05:22.240 And think about this, it's 1990, it's Santa Cruz, Surf City. 00:05:22.560 --> 00:05:24.480 By the way, I was not cool at all. 00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:28.879 This hick boy in Surf City, Santa Cruz, that did not go over well. 00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:33.279 Um and I do this is my first memory of that church. 00:05:33.439 --> 00:05:38.720 I remember sitting in the front row with my parents because when you're the pastor's family, you have to sit in the front row. 00:05:38.879 --> 00:05:42.800 It felt more like a punishment, and all eyes were on you when you're a little kid. 00:05:43.199 --> 00:05:54.079 And then there was these like thrones on the stage, these big chairs, and the elders in their three-piece suits were sitting on the stage. 00:05:54.240 --> 00:05:58.560 It was formal, it was reverent, and it was boring. 00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:02.240 In fact, there was one pastor there, wonderful man. 00:06:02.319 --> 00:06:08.160 Um he didn't get to preach a whole lot, and so he took that time to preach that he didn't get uh when he prayed. 00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:13.839 And he prayed, and he prayed, and he prayed. 00:06:14.160 --> 00:06:24.399 You know, as a nine-year-old or 10-year-old, I um I had this like little Casio stopwatch, and so the game for me was to time his prayers and to see how long his prayers went. 00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:28.639 And you know, in church, then I would just see if he could beat his record. 00:06:29.519 --> 00:06:32.480 His record was a little over 15 minutes, by the way. 00:06:32.639 --> 00:06:36.560 I mean, the I mean, I love prayer and all, but that was a little long. 00:06:37.920 --> 00:06:43.759 It was reverent, it was boring, it was stiff, it was long. 00:06:44.720 --> 00:06:50.319 You know, I remember when drums first were able to be a part of worship service, like the drums, and I'm a drummer. 00:06:50.560 --> 00:06:54.639 I remember the very first time I saw a drum set, I'm like, this is what I want to do. 00:06:54.800 --> 00:07:04.079 I fell in love with the drums, and drums were kind of controversial back in the day because they weren't reverent enough, they were allowed at Santa Cruz in the early days. 00:07:04.160 --> 00:07:07.439 Um, they had a drum set and it was off to the side. 00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:22.079 It couldn't even be on the stage, it was off to the side, and then instead of plexiglass like we have today to kind of control some of the sound, there was a big wooden, oh, you think of it like a cubicle, a wooden cubicle with foam on the inside to deaden the sound. 00:07:22.319 --> 00:07:27.120 I remember one Sunday evening, yes, because you back then you did Sunday evening church as well. 00:07:27.279 --> 00:07:31.040 Now, Sunday evening church was more casual than Sunday morning church. 00:07:31.279 --> 00:07:37.199 And so I would sit uh behind that wooden cubicle and watch Paul Sampson play the drums. 00:07:37.360 --> 00:07:37.920 It was awesome. 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:45.040 It was one of my favorite like growing up church experiences, like just sitting there during worship and seeing them playing, like, I want to be like you one day, Paul. 00:07:45.920 --> 00:07:50.399 And then one time I decided to stay back there during my dad's sermon. 00:07:50.639 --> 00:07:55.120 Big mistake, by the way, especially as a fidgety nine or ten-year-old. 00:07:55.279 --> 00:08:01.759 And I put, I was sat on the stool, the drum thrown right there, and I decided to kick my feet up onto the snare drum. 00:08:03.439 --> 00:08:12.480 I lost my balance, and all of a sudden, in the middle of my dad's sermon, the snare hit into the cymbal, and there's this crashing, and there was this bang. 00:08:13.120 --> 00:08:19.040 And that was the last time I was able to sit back there and watch Paul Sampson play. 00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:30.480 And the church in days past, maybe it was so relevant or religious that you were afraid to make a mistake, you're afraid to be real. 00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:37.679 In fact, you got dressed up on the outside, but you would never show anybody what's going on on the inside. 00:08:38.399 --> 00:08:45.519 And then over the course of time, the pendulum has swung from reverence or rigid to relevance. 00:08:45.840 --> 00:08:47.039 How do we be hip? 00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:47.919 How do we be cool? 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:50.159 How do we stay connected with what's going on? 00:08:50.399 --> 00:08:55.600 How do we make sure that when you show up, you go like, man, that was awesome. 00:08:55.919 --> 00:08:59.840 The band was awesome, the environment was awesome. 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:01.919 I don't know why I'm saying awesome like that. 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:04.240 Honestly, I was a little confused myself. 00:09:06.320 --> 00:09:18.559 And see, reverent to the extreme brought about a uh bit of a fake church. 00:09:19.039 --> 00:09:22.639 Afraid to show up, rigid religious. 00:09:24.399 --> 00:09:31.519 Relevant to the extreme has brought about a shallowed, self-centered Christianity. 00:09:32.240 --> 00:09:39.840 And the truth is, when we look at both of those, we actually need both reverence and relevance. 00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:48.159 See, we threw the baby out with the bathwater with rigid and stiff and boring, and we need reverence. 00:09:48.320 --> 00:09:57.039 The reason you're here today, by the way, is you need a transcendent moment with your creator to encounter a holy God who can wholly satisfy. 00:09:57.200 --> 00:09:58.720 That's what your soul needs. 00:09:58.879 --> 00:10:12.159 And it's reverent and it's awesome and it's amazing, and you need relevance for the gospel to meet you right where you're at and to speak to what you're going through. 00:10:12.480 --> 00:10:20.480 And the gospel and the gospel of Jesus meets you where you're at, but it will not leave you where you are at. 00:10:21.519 --> 00:10:29.120 We need, as we gather, a new expression of the church that's both reverent and relevant. 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:33.919 So the question is, how do we start that as we regather? 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:38.000 How do we begin to be that kind of church? 00:10:38.879 --> 00:10:56.240 For the last several months, there's been one passage that's just been echoing in my mind, just like rattling my soul, and it's like Jesus just saying, Ryan, this is this is what I've been up to from the beginning, and it's what I'm up to in this moment. 00:10:57.519 --> 00:11:01.039 I think as the church we lose sight of it and just get into our old norms. 00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:04.000 And he's like, no, no, this is what I'm about. 00:11:04.720 --> 00:11:08.799 If you have your Bible, would you open up to Matthew chapter 9, verse 14? 00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:18.720 Matthew 9, the context, the context is Jesus' disciples, uh, they're not following the religious norms. 00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:24.480 Neither are the Pharisees or even of John the Baptist disciples, and he's being questioned on this. 00:11:24.960 --> 00:11:33.360 Like Jesus, there are norms about how we go about church, norms about how we worship, norms about the way we do things here, and they're not doing it. 00:11:33.519 --> 00:11:34.480 What's up? 00:11:34.960 --> 00:11:36.559 Explain yourself. 00:11:36.799 --> 00:11:37.440 And he does. 00:11:37.600 --> 00:11:39.279 We pick it up in verse 14. 00:11:39.519 --> 00:11:54.799 Then John's disciples, that's John the Baptist's disciple, the one who prepared the way for Jesus, came and asked him, How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but you and your disciples do not fast? 00:11:55.279 --> 00:12:00.240 There's three major disciplines or spiritual practices in ancient Judaism. 00:12:00.399 --> 00:12:09.840 One was prayer, the other was fasting, second was fasting, and the final one was the giving of alms or giving to the needy, that this is just what spiritual people do. 00:12:10.399 --> 00:12:12.080 And his disciples aren't fasting. 00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:16.159 I mean, the Pharisees, in fact, they fasted twice a week. 00:12:16.399 --> 00:12:17.759 What's up with that? 00:12:18.080 --> 00:12:24.799 And Jesus answered, How can the guest of the bridegroom mourn while he's with them? 00:12:25.039 --> 00:12:28.799 The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, then they'll fast. 00:12:28.960 --> 00:12:35.840 He's not saying they're never going to fast, but there's a time and a place, there's a moment, and the time and the place or the moment is not now. 00:12:36.080 --> 00:12:44.399 He goes on, No one sows a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 00:12:44.639 --> 00:12:48.159 Neither do people pour new wineskin into old wineskin. 00:12:48.559 --> 00:12:53.120 If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out, and the wineskins will be ruined. 00:12:53.360 --> 00:13:01.919 No, they pour new wineskin into new wineskin, or new wine into new wineskin, and both are preserved. 00:13:03.519 --> 00:13:10.080 Jesus gives them three pictures to answer what he is up to. 00:13:10.559 --> 00:13:20.879 What is Jesus up to, and how is does he change everything about the way we interact and worship God and how we relate to God Himself? 00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:23.919 The first picture is the picture of the wedding. 00:13:24.240 --> 00:13:27.519 Says, How can the guest of a bridegroom mourn while he's with them? 00:13:27.679 --> 00:13:28.559 The picture of a wedding. 00:13:28.720 --> 00:13:32.559 Now, uh an ancient Jewish wedding lasted seven days. 00:13:32.799 --> 00:13:34.159 It was a party. 00:13:34.559 --> 00:13:37.360 It was not something that you just kind of showed up to. 00:13:38.480 --> 00:13:41.600 It wasn't necessarily destination, but it was a destination wedding. 00:13:41.840 --> 00:13:43.840 You're gonna be there a while. 00:13:45.679 --> 00:13:56.000 In fact, um the custom of the day was that you wouldn't mourn, you wouldn't fast, or do any work during the wedding itself. 00:13:56.159 --> 00:13:56.480 Why? 00:13:56.720 --> 00:14:04.639 Because the focus is the celebration of the bride and the groom uniting into one new life together. 00:14:05.279 --> 00:14:13.759 Now, I just want to draw some parallels about the wedding picture for what we do when we gather together as the church. 00:14:14.639 --> 00:14:21.120 The wedding picture here is first that the wedding is both sacred and celebratory, isn't it? 00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:31.600 There's something sacred happening that one man and one woman are standing before God, and they're making a covenant commitment before God and before others about their relationship. 00:14:31.679 --> 00:14:36.080 It's sacred and it's holy and it's celebratory. 00:14:36.879 --> 00:14:39.360 And when we gather, it's the same. 00:14:39.919 --> 00:14:53.440 When we gather, there's it's a sacredness, there's a holy moment when we gather, and there's the celebratory reality that we are here in the presence of the one who loved us, who saved us, who gave his life for us. 00:14:53.519 --> 00:14:58.639 We're forgiven, we're redeemed, we're adopted, we've been made new, the Spirit of God lives inside of us. 00:14:58.799 --> 00:15:04.080 So how can I not celebrate with my family members? 00:16:44.159 --> 00:16:44.799 Shrink. 00:16:45.200 --> 00:16:50.000 When it shrinks, it's gonna pull at them and tear and make a bigger hole. 00:16:50.399 --> 00:16:55.360 This actually explains why some people have really struggled with Jesus. 00:16:56.240 --> 00:17:04.240 Because what we want Jesus to do, by the way, is to add him to our life to make our life better, our old thing. 00:17:04.400 --> 00:17:09.279 Jesus didn't come to be added to your life, he came to bring you brand new life. 00:17:09.599 --> 00:17:13.839 And we keep trying to add him and wondering why the whole just gets bigger. 00:17:14.720 --> 00:17:16.480 And he's going like, no, no, no. 00:17:16.559 --> 00:17:24.240 Listen, if you try to add Jesus to the old life, to the old forms of religion, not only will it not work, it will make things worse. 00:17:24.880 --> 00:17:28.400 And then the final picture: the wineskins. 00:17:29.359 --> 00:17:39.039 Now I know we're pretty familiar with wineskins since you can go down to wine and porium and get yourself a wonderful new wineskin for all of your ventinine needs. 00:17:39.200 --> 00:17:41.519 I don't even know if ventinine's the right word there. 00:17:43.680 --> 00:17:49.039 So in the ancient day, you had two ways that you went about winemaking in two forms. 00:17:49.200 --> 00:17:52.240 One was in a large jar, uh clay jars. 00:17:52.559 --> 00:17:55.599 Many people who had large vineyards, they would make it this way. 00:17:55.759 --> 00:17:59.039 You'd go to purchase a new uh, you know, some wine from them. 00:17:59.200 --> 00:18:05.200 You would bring your wine skin, and it the wine is still in the fermenting process, even in that regard. 00:18:05.279 --> 00:18:09.920 And so a wineskin was simply goat skin that was sewed together, it would be watertight. 00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:18.160 They actually did a specific type of you know, tanning to it uh to prepare it so it didn't have any goatey aftertaste, which is wonderful by the way. 00:18:18.799 --> 00:18:25.839 And so you had this incredibly uh wonderful, traveling, watertight vessel. 00:18:26.079 --> 00:18:29.680 And yet, wine in its fermenting process, what? 00:18:29.839 --> 00:18:33.039 The gases begin to get released and it expands. 00:18:33.759 --> 00:18:38.000 And so when you put it into the wineskin, you close it up, it expands. 00:18:38.079 --> 00:18:41.759 A brand new wine, uh brand new goat skin's gonna stretch. 00:18:42.079 --> 00:18:46.559 But once it's already been stretched, it can't stretch anymore. 00:18:46.960 --> 00:18:53.599 And so if you put new wine into that already used wineskin, all that's gonna happen is it's gonna break apart. 00:18:53.759 --> 00:18:56.480 And here's what Jesus is saying, and this is so important. 00:18:56.720 --> 00:19:02.000 Jesus brings about a newness that cannot be confined within the old form. 00:19:02.400 --> 00:19:06.960 You need a new wineskin to hold the new work Jesus is doing. 00:19:07.279 --> 00:19:11.119 Jesus is up to something new in his church. 00:19:11.359 --> 00:19:23.440 And I believe in this season, friends, that all of the shaking of the last year, could it be that Jesus is going, no, no, I want us to, I want to see a new work in the West. 00:19:25.200 --> 00:19:28.559 He's doing a new and fresh work in the Middle East, by the way. 00:19:28.799 --> 00:19:32.400 He's doing a new and fresh work in China, by the way. 00:19:32.640 --> 00:19:35.279 He's doing a new and fresh work in South America. 00:19:35.440 --> 00:19:43.279 And could it be that this season in the life of the church and what we're going through is he's going to do a new and fresh work in us? 00:19:43.440 --> 00:19:49.519 And the problem is what I hear people saying is I can't wait to get back to the way things used to be. 00:19:50.079 --> 00:19:53.519 I can't wait until church fills the way it used to. 00:19:53.920 --> 00:19:56.000 What if that's not the goal?
