00:03:45.599 --> 00:03:51.599 And they said, because you're reading a Bible, and uh we're afraid you're like gonna join a cult. 00:03:51.759 --> 00:03:53.120 And I'm like, oh, a cult? 00:03:53.199 --> 00:04:00.000 And at the time, all of the end times was big, like Christians were all waiting for the end times to happen and looking for any. 00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:15.120 I mean, uh, that's gonna happen, but there was kind of an obsession with it, and they started saying they were concerned for me that I was gonna lose my creativity, and all and I remember like, wait a minute, um, is it a cult? 00:05:29.759 --> 00:05:32.560 And I'm just like, and I'm like, I think I am. 00:05:32.720 --> 00:05:34.480 I can remember that, like, I think I am. 00:05:34.560 --> 00:05:36.000 Like, I just remember like, I'm a Christian. 00:05:36.079 --> 00:05:40.399 I can't, like, and so it's like this weird, uh, this very strange experience. 00:05:40.560 --> 00:05:42.720 So, but I didn't have that growing up. 00:05:42.879 --> 00:05:55.759 And but I understand, so if you're here and you're like maybe checking out face, or maybe you're, you know, and you're in high school, like in youth, and all of a sudden you're on TikTok and you start hearing these things, and don't go on TikTok. 00:05:55.920 --> 00:06:00.720 If your parents, if your parents are saying don't go on it, they love you, that's why. 00:06:01.040 --> 00:06:12.480 So, like today, but it is uh uh, but you're hearing these messages and it can be confusing because you're hearing a lot of Bible being used to disprove the Bible. 00:06:12.639 --> 00:06:15.439 You're seeing scriptures being put up on clever memes. 00:06:15.519 --> 00:06:21.279 I'm gonna show you a couple that are just then saying, you know, Christianity is uh, you know, the Bible is kind of wicked. 00:06:21.360 --> 00:06:26.800 There's so much wicked stuff in there, and if you follow Jesus, you're gonna be a hateful person in all of this. 00:06:26.959 --> 00:06:38.319 And what I can tell you, I'd be the first person that if I ever didn't trust in the scriptures or think there's that, I'd be like, don't believe in this stuff, or this isn't true. 00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:47.920 But I can tell you, the more I've devoted my life to almost like wanting to, you know, to make sure it is true and the scriptures have changed my life. 00:06:48.079 --> 00:06:58.319 Now, I'm gonna put up a verse because never, this is like a classic Christian verse that if you've been around church or thing that you always hear this, and it's John 3.16. 00:06:59.680 --> 00:07:02.879 But never let scripture lose its impact. 00:07:03.199 --> 00:07:07.279 John 3.16, you might have heard it 500 times, 5,000 times. 00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:11.920 But I remember reading this from a little pamphlet and like, is this true? 00:07:12.079 --> 00:07:14.480 Like, what an amazing truth if it is. 00:07:14.879 --> 00:07:18.639 And it's for God so loved, right? 00:07:18.959 --> 00:07:25.600 Loved not just the world, you sitting in these seats, whatever your name is, he loved you. 00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:28.240 He loved Dan when I was first reading this. 00:07:28.639 --> 00:07:41.120 For God so loved Dan that he gave his one and only son, that's Jesus, and that whoever believes in him, it doesn't say you have to go do things or attend meetings or give money. 00:07:41.199 --> 00:07:46.639 It's like whoever by faith you believe in him, you shall not perish, but have eternal life. 00:07:46.800 --> 00:07:53.759 And I can tell you, please, please, don't ever lose the freshness of experiencing these truths. 00:07:53.920 --> 00:08:02.720 Because as a young guy back then, when I was first checking out this Bible, and my friends were worried I was joining a cult, and I'm like, boy, this sounds so good. 00:08:03.040 --> 00:08:22.160 God really forgives me and he believes me and he loves me and eternal life, and and uh, and all I can tell you is like this is a wonderful, it's the inspired words of God that it's not we don't worship the Bible, it's God's you know text to us, you could say, of what we he wants us to know about him. 00:08:22.639 --> 00:08:32.639 Yet what's going on is because it's kind of our fault in a way, we focused a lot of energy in churches over the years on all of the nice verses in the Bible. 00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:36.240 You know, all the verses just like that one which we would need to focus on. 00:08:36.559 --> 00:09:00.320 But there's an intentionality, and that's what I'm gonna be addressing here this morning, is that there's an intentionality now of pulling out the uh scary sounding Bible verses and communicating them again and again and again, and it's catching Christians off guard, and then it's also causing confusion to people that aren't Christians, to then think this is what Christians believe. 00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:03.279 This is the scary God that Christians believe in. 00:09:03.519 --> 00:09:09.039 So let's take a look at a few, and I only can do a few at the time, but you may see things like this. 00:09:09.120 --> 00:09:12.159 So I'm just putting up some memes that are easy to find. 00:09:12.240 --> 00:09:29.039 Uh, like here's a guy with a chalkboard, and it says, various things the Bible bans, you know, shaving, cussing, gossip, football, because it says do not touch the skin of a dead pig, which is kind of crazy because footballs are not made of actual pig skin, but that's that's another point. 00:09:29.200 --> 00:09:34.879 Uh, you know, don't eat pork, don't eat lobster or shrimp, and there's a mockery. 00:09:35.039 --> 00:09:44.480 Look at all these silly things the Bible bans, and you Christians are picking and choosing and cherry-picking stuff and ignoring these, but then saying you should do these. 00:09:44.720 --> 00:10:04.960 But all of a sudden you're having people, and I've seen this stuff by celebrities on TV and newscasters that are saying, Oh, I know the Bible, it says that you shouldn't do this, this, this, this, talking about a lot of these strange things, and then it makes Christians feel embarrassed, awkward, don't know how to respond, and that's a major criticism that comes up a lot. 00:10:05.120 --> 00:10:08.080 There's even a shirt, God Hates Shrimp. 00:10:08.559 --> 00:10:18.000 And there was a website, I haven't looked lately, there was a website, Godhates shrimp.com, and it was trying to show look at you silly Christians, what you believe. 00:10:18.159 --> 00:10:19.600 Uh, you can't eat shrimp. 00:10:19.679 --> 00:10:23.679 This God will punish you, the scary God, if you eat shrimp. 00:10:23.919 --> 00:10:26.080 Now, these verses do come from somewhere. 00:10:26.240 --> 00:10:28.559 Leviticus chapter 11, verse 10. 00:10:29.039 --> 00:10:39.919 But all the creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales, whether among the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water, you are to regard as unclean. 00:10:40.080 --> 00:10:41.440 You must not eat their meat. 00:10:41.600 --> 00:10:41.840 Right? 00:10:41.919 --> 00:10:44.879 So, what a strange thing that that's in the Bible. 00:10:45.039 --> 00:10:48.240 Why would God care if we should we don't eat shrimp? 00:10:48.879 --> 00:10:50.720 I'm gonna get to that in a couple minutes. 00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:54.240 But again, you'll see things like this all the time. 00:10:54.399 --> 00:10:58.320 If you start paying attention, uh they take serious things. 00:10:58.480 --> 00:10:59.600 These are serious things, though. 00:10:59.759 --> 00:11:01.360 So, Noah's Ark. 00:11:01.600 --> 00:11:13.440 We see, you know, the as a kid growing up, if you grow up in a church, it might even be painted, you know, in various church children's ministries, they paint this on the wall, the ark, uh, happy animals on a boat. 00:11:13.679 --> 00:11:32.720 But what's happening now is you're then seeing people notice these stories, and they've always been there, but then highlight them and start questioning Christians to say, how can you believe in a God that in Genesis 6 that it says this, I'm going to bring the flood waters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens. 00:11:32.960 --> 00:11:40.799 Every creature in it, uh, every creature that has the breath of life in it, everyone, everything on earth will perish. 00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:44.639 So that's not quite the happy animal story. 00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:47.919 And then Christians are like, I never thought about that. 00:11:48.159 --> 00:11:48.879 And there's more. 00:11:49.039 --> 00:11:54.399 And I mean you'll see things like the images of like painting of people drowning, which would have happened. 00:11:54.480 --> 00:11:56.799 Or then there's a whole series of these. 00:11:56.879 --> 00:11:58.879 They're called evil Bible stories. 00:11:59.120 --> 00:12:02.720 And here's what they say: like, God drowns the whole earth. 00:12:03.039 --> 00:12:07.519 And it's criticism against Christians, like, I don't want to, is that what God did? 00:12:07.679 --> 00:12:10.320 How about Joshua and Jericho? 00:12:10.799 --> 00:12:15.519 We this is from a uh kind of a Sunday school curriculum book. 00:12:15.679 --> 00:12:28.240 This was to hang on the wall in a kid's room, and it's Joshua blowing the trumpet, marching around Jericho, and they say, look, and they teach, this is what you teach your kids, it's part of the story, but then they say they're not teaching you what happens next. 00:12:28.480 --> 00:12:30.879 Joshua chapter 6, verse 20 and 21. 00:12:31.039 --> 00:12:39.600 They devoted the city to the Lord and they destroyed with the sword every living thing in it, men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep, and donkeys. 00:12:39.759 --> 00:12:45.360 And so then you'll see the mockery, genocide after genocide after genocide. 00:12:45.759 --> 00:12:50.639 Memes and all of this being put up, Christians being like, I don't know how to answer that. 00:12:50.879 --> 00:12:54.480 Is God really this angry, vicious God that kills people? 00:12:54.799 --> 00:12:55.759 There's other things. 00:12:55.919 --> 00:13:01.279 I'm just gonna highlight a few, and I'll come back and respond to a couple, so I'm gonna just leave you hanging, but I can't get to them all. 00:13:01.440 --> 00:13:02.559 But there's things like this. 00:13:02.799 --> 00:13:06.480 Again, once you start hearing them, you start seeing them and noticing. 00:13:06.559 --> 00:13:12.240 And I'm in enough non-Christian uh lives of people that I hear these things of what they're picking up. 00:13:12.399 --> 00:13:27.279 And it's like God has 42 children mauled by bears, and there's a graphic, and they talk about the story from 2 Kings, and they say, like, look, God uh basically it's like it says, Some boys came out of the town and jeered Elisha, get out of here, Baldy. 00:13:27.519 --> 00:13:33.360 And then he turned around, looked at them, called a curse on them, two bears came out of the woods and mauled 42 of the boys. 00:13:33.600 --> 00:13:40.399 So you'll then see things like uh children are being killed by God on memes, again, over and over. 00:13:40.720 --> 00:13:45.519 Uh all right, just two more, because kind of depressing, but I'm that's that's sort of the point of what I'm trying to do. 00:13:45.679 --> 00:14:08.639 Is that then there's things like a guy named Uzzah, who was uh if you've ever seen the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark, there's something called the Ark, and it's where they put the Ten Commandments in and carried the ark as they traveled around and then put it in the temple in Jerusalem eventually, but the ark was seen as a sacred and holy thing, and then someone named Uzzah, it was gonna fall off a cart. 00:14:08.720 --> 00:14:10.240 He grabbed it and then he died. 00:14:10.399 --> 00:14:14.159 God killed him for trying to balance the ark so it wouldn't fall. 00:14:14.399 --> 00:14:17.039 Like, what kind of God would just kill a guy like that? 00:14:17.200 --> 00:14:18.320 Straight from scripture. 00:14:18.480 --> 00:14:19.279 One more. 00:14:20.399 --> 00:14:21.919 This one I see so many times. 00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:27.039 Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks. 00:14:27.200 --> 00:14:37.279 And you can see Psalm 137.9, there's a nice little heart that someone's kind of mocking, and that is what the scriptures say, and then you can see an atheist group. 00:14:37.440 --> 00:14:43.759 There's only a small percentage of militant atheists, both atheists who are just kind and leave people alone, but there's some that don't. 00:14:43.919 --> 00:14:50.159 And they have like, I hate babies, like a billboard, with verses saying, This is the God you worship. 00:14:51.039 --> 00:14:52.720 Is this true then? 00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:57.759 There are verses and there are stories that this happened. 00:14:57.840 --> 00:15:00.320 There's a website called evilbible.com. 00:15:00.559 --> 00:15:09.519 Um, it's a real website, and I've talked to so many people that look up verses and they find this website, and then they end up saying, I didn't know this stuff was in the Bible. 00:15:09.679 --> 00:15:11.360 And this is where it's really sad. 00:15:11.440 --> 00:15:12.960 Uh, this is a true story. 00:15:13.120 --> 00:15:19.519 There's someone on who tweeted, I read the Bible cover to cover twice in my youth. 00:15:19.679 --> 00:15:23.120 I remember encounting verses that made me uncomfortable, but I dismissed them. 00:15:23.200 --> 00:15:33.120 I started reading it again last year, but I got to the sixth chapter of Genesis, and then I started crying because the God I believed in was a monster. 00:15:33.679 --> 00:15:36.799 And I'm so sad because I wish someone could be talking to her. 00:15:36.960 --> 00:15:40.399 Maybe she just didn't want to have anyone talk to her, but you're seeing this. 00:15:40.480 --> 00:15:42.879 So let's now turn the corner and say, what do we do? 00:15:51.840 --> 00:15:56.000 Um, what I'm gonna do quickly is just say, here's two ways not to do. 00:15:56.639 --> 00:16:03.360 One is there's an approach that someone may ask you about this or here, and it's like, well, God can do whatever he wants, he's God's God. 00:16:03.440 --> 00:16:04.799 If he kills people, that's his business. 00:16:05.039 --> 00:16:13.840 Like, no, that's true, but it doesn't have empathy and sympathy, and it actually can repel people if there's not a thoughtful response. 00:16:13.919 --> 00:16:22.799 So it is true, God can do whatever he wants, but we should engage thinking and heart because from a surface glance I understand why they're thinking that. 00:16:23.039 --> 00:16:34.000 A second one, and I want to warn about this one, because it's becoming more and more common for Ish for Christians to then say, All right, I believe in the Bible, but I don't like this part, or I don't like this part. 00:16:34.080 --> 00:16:36.879 And it's happening like a lot, that's why they pay attention. 00:16:36.960 --> 00:16:40.000 It's all said, well, God didn't really say that. 00:16:40.240 --> 00:16:54.480 Or this part the Israelites wrote so they can feel like they're conqueror, conquering warriors, or you know, the New Testament, there were there were, you know, Paul was really uh an obsessed, you know, crazy person, so he didn't mean this stuff and to restrict it. 00:16:54.559 --> 00:16:57.679 And so people are saying, well, it's not all inspired. 00:16:57.919 --> 00:17:11.519 And once you do that, and this is actually really common today, once you do that, it's a different story, it's a different God, it's a different Jesus, and the worst of all, it becomes a different gospel about how we're saved and what Jesus did on the cross. 00:17:11.759 --> 00:17:13.759 So be careful with that part. 00:17:14.000 --> 00:17:22.559 And what I want to then show is this third approach, which is the understand the whole Bible storyline to know God's character approach. 00:17:23.119 --> 00:17:28.640 What I mean by that is you can like, you know, pick and choose certain things and create anything. 00:17:28.720 --> 00:17:30.079 And I want to give an illustration. 00:17:30.319 --> 00:17:31.680 Mary Poppins, the movie. 00:17:31.839 --> 00:17:34.480 You know Mary Poppins, most of you probably have seen the movie. 00:17:34.799 --> 00:17:42.240 When you think of Mary Poppins, because you know the whole movie and you've seen it, you know she's a good nanny, a magical nanny that comes in and helps the family. 00:17:42.480 --> 00:17:51.519 And the family is there and uh and she does, you know, certain things with the family, and eventually she flies away and kind of saves the family at the end. 00:17:51.759 --> 00:17:53.200 So we know Mary. 00:17:53.519 --> 00:17:58.160 But what if you never ever knew the story of Mary Poppins?
