three by five card. 00:00:54.320 --> 00:01:12.719 And um in week number one, uh we talked about shift and how God actually allows storms to come into our life, and at times even we learn causes storms into our life to shift our focus, shift our our life, our mindset. 00:01:13.120 --> 00:01:19.760 Uh sometimes our our our careers, our relationships, so that we get the more that he really wants us to have. 00:01:20.079 --> 00:01:24.640 And uh, as Ryan was teaching, he he said, Here, I want you to write this prayer down. 00:01:24.719 --> 00:01:25.359 So I did. 00:01:25.599 --> 00:01:32.719 Heavenly Father, would you give me an opportunity to share with someone in some way about you today? 00:01:32.879 --> 00:01:37.840 And I was sitting in the back, actually, I have a few back problems, so I was sitting on the cement. 00:01:39.120 --> 00:01:41.040 And I uh I prayed that. 00:01:41.120 --> 00:01:47.599 And then Ryan said, I want you to write down the name of I I can't remember whether it was three people or four people. 00:01:48.079 --> 00:01:50.719 And uh, I've always been a bit of an overachiever. 00:01:50.879 --> 00:02:00.480 Actually, there's a there's a network of people right around where I live, and I have lived there, I guess, for uh almost 12 years. 00:02:00.719 --> 00:02:07.120 And we have taken food and we have invited them to things, and we have loved them in the best way that we can. 00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:16.159 But as Ryan was sharing, what I realized was down deep in my heart, I didn't really care about my neighbors the way God cares about them. 00:02:16.639 --> 00:02:29.520 I mean, there was sort of this moment, you know, he was talking about Jonah and his hypocrisy that, you know, he's this leader that is called by God and he's a prophet and he's taking God's word everywhere, but God says go to Nineveh, and he goes, No. 00:02:29.680 --> 00:02:32.719 And I just thought, you know, pretty hypocritical, you know. 00:02:32.879 --> 00:02:36.479 I I was I was with Ryan, like, yeah, what a hypocrite Jonah was. 00:02:36.719 --> 00:02:45.120 And then as he prayed and asked us to do this, it was like, wow, Chip, but you got a lot of Jonah in you. 00:02:46.159 --> 00:02:53.680 Um and so I I wrote uh names down and I've prayed for him every single day since week one. 00:02:54.879 --> 00:03:02.960 And it really is interesting how when you shift and you, and I've, you know, I I told God I was, I mean, I'm sorry. 00:03:03.039 --> 00:03:09.840 It's not like I've neglected them or I haven't shared or haven't done this, but they're not on my heart the way they were on God's heart. 00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:14.479 And so um I've prayed for him every single day, and uh it's amazing. 00:03:14.639 --> 00:03:16.080 Stuff started happening. 00:03:16.240 --> 00:03:31.360 So uh the one guy that I really like, he's around the corner or so, and uh uh I've seen him on the golf course, and you know, just has neighbors out, and and out of the blue, he's he's doing this charity event to help some other people. 00:03:31.439 --> 00:03:44.879 And it's uh I think it's a little boy that died early, and he got to know the family, and he was literally orchestrating this charity event and had something to do with golf, and I couldn't go, but I wanted to contribute. 00:03:45.039 --> 00:03:48.719 So because I'd been praying for him every day, it was not like should I? 00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:52.800 I just wrote a check and I said, But I'm not available on that day. 00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:56.719 And so he calls me and says, Um, would you do me a favor? 00:03:56.879 --> 00:03:58.159 I I said, Well, sure. 00:03:58.400 --> 00:04:05.360 He said, Um, you know, the the woman that that lost her son um and all this happened, she's a woman of faith. 00:04:05.439 --> 00:04:08.879 And you know, you gave me that book that you wrote on why I believe. 00:04:09.120 --> 00:04:13.120 Do you think you could give her one or maybe something different? 00:04:13.680 --> 00:04:16.639 And I thought, here I've been for how many years? 00:04:16.879 --> 00:04:30.000 And out of the blue, or so is my experience, as I prayed for him and God shifted my focus, and then afterward he says, Hey, you know, since you can't make that event, how about you and I drive down to that golf course and we'll spend the day together. 00:04:31.920 --> 00:04:40.319 God allows storms in our lives to shift our focus and our life onto the more that we were made for. 00:04:40.560 --> 00:04:46.000 And so in Jonah's case, what we find is uh I can really identify he's a little hard-headed. 00:04:46.160 --> 00:04:50.399 If you'll excuse me, I want to get my three by five card back in here so I don't lose it. 00:04:51.040 --> 00:04:54.000 And so uh, you know, you you we know the story, right? 00:04:54.240 --> 00:04:59.279 He gets thrown in by the sailors, and Jonah uh we'll pick it up in verse 17. 00:04:59.360 --> 00:05:03.360 In the Hebrew Bible, actually, verse 17 is chapter 2, verse 1. 00:05:03.519 --> 00:05:05.199 And so let's let's follow it together. 00:05:05.279 --> 00:05:08.959 So Jonah, the sailors, they're all praying, they've sacrificed to God. 00:05:09.120 --> 00:05:20.399 Jonah runs away from God, and these, you know, pagan sailors, they start praying to the one true God, and they offer sacrifices, and you know, it's like, okay, you know, hey, please forgive us. 00:05:20.480 --> 00:05:26.560 But, you know, one, ready, guys, two, three, and they throw him in, and then of course Jonah's like, this is I'm done. 00:05:28.240 --> 00:05:31.839 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah. 00:05:31.920 --> 00:05:36.079 And Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights. 00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:42.000 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the tri fish. 00:05:42.560 --> 00:05:49.519 Now I now imagine, and we've done enough research and we've got two or three sort of historical examples. 00:05:49.839 --> 00:05:52.240 But let's let's go there for just a minute. 00:05:52.800 --> 00:05:53.120 Okay? 00:05:54.480 --> 00:05:58.319 It's a huge animal, whale, grapefish, something. 00:05:58.480 --> 00:06:00.319 Actually, in Hebrew, it's a sea monster. 00:06:00.480 --> 00:06:04.480 It's this and it's slimy and it's dark. 00:06:06.079 --> 00:06:08.319 And there's oxygen and you can breathe. 00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:09.920 But I just can't imagine. 00:06:10.079 --> 00:06:19.120 And so he's he's sort of drifting down through the water, and notice God appoints his direction, his sovereignty. 00:06:19.360 --> 00:06:32.000 And and notice what I want you to notice as I read this, listen, listen like someone who's been in this yicky, terrible place, and yet realizing, hey, I didn't die, listen for this contrast. 00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:37.680 Jonah says or speaks or prays or cries, and then listen for how the response is. 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:50.240 Because as we read this, I want you to know that when you blow it and when I blow it, and when we feel hopeless and like, you know, we don't deserve anything, we've done exactly the opposite of God's 00:07:08.399 I just cried, I mean, I've got no hope. 00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:11.279 He heard my voice. 00:07:12.959 --> 00:07:18.240 He still has a little bit of a reframing life, which we all do when we're running from God. 00:07:18.560 --> 00:07:21.199 For you cast me into the deep. 00:07:22.240 --> 00:07:24.560 Did God cast him into the deep? 00:07:25.759 --> 00:07:28.639 Or is he in the deep know sort of what's right to do, and you don't do it, and you turn away from God, and he says, that's not a good relationship, or that's not a good decision, or those circumstances are dangerous. descended to the roots of the mountains. 00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:12.080 In other words, he's actually hit the bottom, not only of the sea, but of his life. 00:09:12.320 --> 00:09:16.080 The earth with its bars around me forever. 00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:21.279 This is I am done. 00:09:22.159 --> 00:09:28.320 And he understands I am done because of my choices and my rebellion and what I've done. 00:09:28.559 --> 00:09:30.799 And then here's another big contrast. 00:09:31.120 --> 00:09:35.919 You might circle this, because the first big one was, nevertheless, I know I don't deserve it. 00:09:36.159 --> 00:09:41.039 And this is, but you have brought my life from the pit. 00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:53.279 Oh Yahweh, my God, while I was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you into your holy temple. 00:09:53.919 --> 00:10:00.559 And he's just having this moment where uh this is written in a very clear poetic Hebrew form. 00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:22.720 If you would study uh the Psalms, there's called Lament Psalms, and there's Thanksgiving Psalms, and they have a very clear pattern, and he's recounting every moment of what he went through, and he's created this pattern of an introduction, and then this distress, and then this calling out to God, and this deliverance, and then followed by thanksgiving. 00:10:22.960 --> 00:10:27.519 But he's at this point where uh I don't deserve any of this. 00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:29.120 And then I love it. 00:10:29.200 --> 00:10:35.600 He goes, Those who regard vain idols forsake their faithfulness, and he's incriminating himself. 00:10:35.759 --> 00:10:41.519 His vain idol was, my will, my way, my perspective. 00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:45.039 And now he's like, you know, it's just like how you prayed earlier. 00:10:45.120 --> 00:10:51.759 He's got palms up inside of a dark, smelly, slimy environment. 00:10:52.159 --> 00:10:56.399 And he says, But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. 00:10:56.559 --> 00:11:00.080 That which I have vowed, going to Nineveh, I will pay. 00:11:00.320 --> 00:11:04.960 And then here's the great line that you just put a squiggly line under it, put a box around it. 00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:07.279 Salvation is from the Lord. 00:11:07.519 --> 00:11:09.039 It's this great moment. 00:11:09.440 --> 00:11:14.000 In the context here, he's not looking at when we say salvation, we think justification. 00:11:14.159 --> 00:11:22.320 I I turned from my sin, I prayed to receive Christ, but the word salvation literally means to be delivered, to be delivered out of something. 00:11:22.480 --> 00:11:30.000 And so the author here is letting us know Jonah is delivered out of this, but it's it's thematic. 00:11:30.159 --> 00:11:32.399 The Ninevehites are going to be delivered. 00:11:32.559 --> 00:11:34.159 The sailors were delivered. 00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:37.679 Salvation comes from God and God alone. 00:11:37.759 --> 00:11:39.840 It's one of the great themes of the book. 00:11:40.159 --> 00:11:47.679 Then the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up from the dry land. 00:11:47.840 --> 00:11:50.000 Uh, put a circle around vomited. 00:11:50.080 --> 00:11:52.879 It's a really key word, and we're gonna come back to it. 00:11:53.840 --> 00:12:02.000 And by the way, when you think vomited, I I read a guy, he's actually a friend and he's a scholar, and he did all this word study on vomit. 00:12:02.720 --> 00:12:07.759 And uh he said, uh puke, regurgitate. 00:12:08.080 --> 00:12:13.120 Think of the the smell, think of he said vomit means vomit. 00:12:14.480 --> 00:12:20.240 And he said uh it's uh a unique word used in the Old Testament. 00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:27.679 There's a handful of times where God talks about what he vomits and why, and we'll get there in a minute, but I just don't want you to miss that. 00:12:28.159 --> 00:12:30.000 What's the big idea? 00:12:30.320 --> 00:12:34.399 I mean, in other words, Jonah, we just heard his prayer, right? 00:12:34.559 --> 00:12:41.600 I'm running away from God, a storm comes, I get thrown in the ocean, I'm beyond hope, I cry out for help. 00:12:41.840 --> 00:12:43.600 Here's the big idea. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:49.120 God deliver let's say delivers us together. 00:12:49.360 --> 00:12:50.000 Ready? 00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:59.440 God from the storms to reveal his mercy and to position us to fulfill the more that we're made for. 00:13:00.240 --> 00:13:24.720 I don't care what you've done, I don't care where you are, I don't care how far away you feel from God, I don't care if the storms are circumstantial or relational or COVID-related, I don't care whether it has to do with work or job, whether it's something that you would look back and say, I gotta own this, or it's what other people did to you, or circumstances out of your control. 00:13:25.600 --> 00:13:29.120 God longs for you to do what Jonah did. 00:13:29.600 --> 00:13:39.360 Think of the verbs I cried out, I prayed, I remembered, I asked, in the midst of the bottom, it's oh God, please. 00:13:40.639 --> 00:13:47.759 And notice he says, God delivers us from storms to reveal his mercy. 00:13:48.480 --> 00:13:49.440 It's interesting. 00:13:49.519 --> 00:13:56.080 There's a classic Old Testament passage that says God delights to show mercy. 00:13:56.799 --> 00:13:58.559 I mean, think of things that you delight in. 00:13:58.720 --> 00:14:05.679 Think of things that like I love to do this, or I'm so attracted to do it, or it's such a joy whenever I get to. 00:14:05.919 --> 00:14:37.519 Whenever our God, who created all that there is, who spoke the galaxies into existence, and the triune God who sent God the Son to come and die in our place and rise from the dead, pay for our sins, when he sees us blowing it and when we're hurting and when we're struggling, he finds delight to forgive you, to restore you, to put his arm around you, to take you back to where you longed to be. 00:14:38.159 --> 00:14:42.080 But he doesn't do it just so that you experience his mercy. 00:14:43.039 --> 00:15:06.080 He delights to deliver us often from ourselves, to reveal his mercy that this is what he's like, but to position you, to position you to get your focus off yourself and on to the more that you were made for, the better, the higher, the calling and the purpose. 00:15:06.559 --> 00:15:16.960 And so as I looked at this, I I tried to uh spend some time and come up with some, maybe that's exactly what was happening then. 00:15:17.440 --> 00:15:19.679 How do we understand this for us? 00:15:20.320 --> 00:15:32.960 And the context from chapter one and chapter four is this Jonah's disobedience and despair were birthed out of fear that God's agenda might be different than his desires, right? 00:15:33.039 --> 00:15:33.759 Wasn't that it? 00:15:33.919 --> 00:15:38.080 I mean, he was afraid, like, I don't want to go to Nineveh. 00:15:38.399 --> 00:15:38.879 Why? 00:15:39.200 --> 00:15:44.879 We learn in chapter four as it opens up, he says to God, see, you're gonna learn a little bit later. 00:15:44.960 --> 00:15:47.679 I don't, Ryan, I don't want to get the cat out of the bag. 00:15:47.919 --> 00:15:59.360 But a little pretell here, he actually will go, he will actually preach, and most wicked people that we have any record of in ancient history are the Ninevehites. 00:15:59.600 --> 00:16:04.240 I mean, that first week, what Ryan described and how they were and the stuff they did. 00:16:04.480 --> 00:16:05.919 I've done some research myself. 00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:08.799 It's it's so appalling, it's so evil. 00:16:08.960 --> 00:16:12.879 It makes stuff that Hitler did look like child's play. 00:16:12.960 --> 00:16:16.320 It's it's so inhumane, so wicked. 00:16:18.000 --> 00:16:19.200 And God forgives them. 00:16:19.279 --> 00:16:24.399 And Jonah goes, the reason I fled because I understood he's got good theology. 00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:27.120 You're this merciful God, no matter where people are at. 00:16:27.279 --> 00:16:34.159 If they ever repent, if they ever genuinely turn, if they ever ask, see, I knew you would do this. 00:16:34.480 --> 00:16:36.960 And so it's very, he's logical. 00:16:37.600 --> 00:16:41.759 Jonah's logic is God is merciful, therefore I'm not gonna go to Nineveh. 00:16:42.399 --> 00:16:47.600 Second, Jonah's desire is for God's justice for the Ninevites, right? 00:16:47.919 --> 00:16:50.799 It's like, God, I don't I don't want to go preach truth. 00:16:51.039 --> 00:16:52.399 What if they respond? 00:16:53.039 --> 00:17:03.440 And Jonah also knows he's got a uh a prophecy in the back of his mind that about 30 years later that the Lord is going to uh bring about judgment to Israel. 00:17:03.679 --> 00:17:05.599 And so, you know, he's like us, he thinks it through. 00:17:05.680 --> 00:17:12.559 Now let's say if I don't go and they don't repent, that's the group that is supposed to come later, which they did in 722 BC. 00:17:12.720 --> 00:17:14.799 This is written about 760 BC. 00:17:15.279 --> 00:17:20.079 And so Jonah's really logical, it really makes sense to him. 00:17:20.319 --> 00:17:23.119 God has this plan, but I know better. 00:17:23.440 --> 00:17:26.480 My desires, my purposes, my outcomes are better. 00:17:26.640 --> 00:17:32.000 And so Jonah's action reveal tribalism over lordship. 00:17:33.920 --> 00:17:44.000 See, at the end of the day, Jonah says, the Israelites and my people, my group, are more important than God's agenda because I know better. 00:17:44.799 --> 00:17:48.640 Anybody seen any of this in our life in the last couple years? 00:17:50.720 --> 00:18:02.880 I think personally, I don't the ugliness I've seen inside the church during this pandemic probably breaks my heart as much or more than anything I've ever seen. 00:18:03.279 --> 00:18:04.559 And it's tribalism. 00:18:04.720 --> 00:18:11.359 And it could be nationalism, but I mean, inside the church, there's people that don't talk to each other anymore. 00:18:12.000 --> 00:18:18.160 They have said things and done things because someone voted blue state and someone voted red state. 00:18:18.319 --> 00:18:22.480 Someone said masks are for everyone, and someone said no mask at all. 00:18:22.640 --> 00:18:30.000 Someone said, This is my position on viruses, well, this is my position on viruses, and I mean it has been unbelievable. 00:18:30.640 --> 00:18:39.599 And instead of Jesus, instead of what's God's plan, instead of, we may have differences politically. 00:18:39.759 --> 00:18:52.319 We may have differences about viruses, we may have differences about masks, we may have all kinds of differences, but what's God's big agenda and isn't our lordship to him and what he wants us to do? 00:18:52.559 --> 00:19:04.079 So wouldn't we treat one another with respect and humility and understanding and say, I wondered, maybe there's a bigger thing than our deal, our tribe? 00:19:04.319 --> 00:19:05.839 Well, we're this group. 00:19:06.079 --> 00:19:09.759 We think, we think this is how everything racially needs to be taken care of. 00:19:09.839 --> 00:19:11.839 Well, we think this is the only way to do it. 00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:17.359 Well, we gave to this group, or you gave to that group, tribalism, tribalism, tribalism. 00:19:18.640 --> 00:19:30.000 Our group, our way, our age, old or young, our ethnicity, our program, our view of scripture. 00:19:30.480 --> 00:19:34.720 All these little tribes saying, We know best. 00:19:34.880 --> 00:19:36.720 That was Jonah's sin. 00:19:38.640 --> 00:19:49.920 What I believe God wants for Israel and the people that I'm concerned about matter than the sovereign God of the universe and his purposes that are bigger. 00:19:50.240 --> 00:19:56.880 Jonah's deliverance was birthed in his faith that God is merciful, even to those who willfully reject him. 00:19:57.440 --> 00:20:00.000 Notice I put some verses from his prayer. 00:20:00.240 --> 00:20:03.200 Jonah's near-death experience, what? 00:20:03.359 --> 00:20:04.319 He's in distress. 00:20:04.480 --> 00:20:07.680 Jonah's prayers and cries for help, he gets delivered. 00:20:07.839 --> 00:20:12.000 Jonah's response is this psalm of thanksgiving. 00:20:13.680 --> 00:20:20.319 What I want you to know, and this is so critical for us, Jonah has good theology, doesn't he? 00:20:20.720 --> 00:20:22.319 He believes the truth. 00:20:22.640 --> 00:20:24.160 God is merciful. 00:20:24.960 --> 00:20:31.519 Since God is merciful, I don't want to do what he tells me to do because I hate those people. 00:20:35.200 --> 00:20:40.960 Um has me uh doing a lot of travel around the world. 00:20:41.119 --> 00:20:44.240 Just before the pandemic, I was in China seven times. 00:20:44.640 --> 00:20:52.799 And we do training of pastors, especially in rural areas, and then uh maybe three times in the Middle East in that season. 00:20:52.960 --> 00:21:22.960 And um we did one event where uh a gathering of about 150 leaders from the Middle East came together and uh they were able to get out because we were in a neutral country, and believers from Iran, Iraq, all kinds of Middle East countries, uh a young doctor from Yemen who there was a contract on out her to kill her because of in this war that those countries are When it says God vomited him out, there's only a couple times in the Old Testament. 00:33:51.920 --> 00:34:00.079 One, God says, These evil people, Leviticus, can you say Leviticus with me? 00:34:00.400 --> 00:34:01.440 Leviticus. 00:34:01.680 --> 00:34:06.400 Uh he said, I'm going to vomit them out of this land because of their evil. 00:34:06.640 --> 00:34:08.639 And he goes, This is the land I'm going to give you. 00:34:08.719 --> 00:34:21.760 And then in Deuteronomy 28, he says to his own people, he says, If you worship idols and you do what these people did, I will vomit you out of the land. 00:34:22.000 --> 00:34:29.119 And so what I want you to know is that Jonah said, Okay, I'll do what you want me to do, but his heart wasn't right. 00:34:30.559 --> 00:34:33.599 And so thousand cattle or whatever, he goes, if I could get back in your good graces by earning my way there, I'd do it. 00:35:46.079 --> 00:35:54.559 And then he says, A broken heart and a contrite spirit,
