for a second year, but uh this year there's been 14, and they are from all different kind of walks of life and ages and life stages and ethnicities and even like length of time they've been following raised in the church, and then others that have just been following Jesus for like a matter of months that joined the program. 00:03:58.319 --> 00:04:03.680 And it's so cool to see that diversity come and uh they before work, we meet at our offices, and um, Nassim and I get to spend time with them, and we talk and read tons of books and read tons of scripture and memorize scripture, and we're them like in kids' ministry, or like, oh, I've seen them like on stage at worship, or I see them always setting up and tearing down, you know, um, because our prototype do a ton of setup and tear 00:07:15.360 But I can tell you one thing, um, and I don't have a lot of time to talk because we're gonna hear from proteges today, so I just want to cut to the chase. 00:07:15.680 --> 00:07:29.279 There's there's some of you that your faith is not moving and it's not growing because it's it's stagnant and it hasn't been in vet you haven't invested into it. 00:07:30.240 --> 00:07:40.720 And um I don't know, you know, I think sometimes we think we're gonna wake up one day and automatically become a humble and helpful citizen in the kingdom of God. 00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:42.399 Like it's just gonna happen. 00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:52.959 And we might just wish, and we show up on Sundays and kind of just keep thinking one day we'll just wake up to be that sacrificial and generous person we've 00:07:58.800 --> 00:08:09.680 And what I've watched with these proteges is like they have gone all in on investing in their faith, and the fruit, the return on the investment is unbelievable. to just wish that that stack of cash were to grow and become, you know, more profitable, and it just sat there. 00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:33.120 Again, uh like I'm not a um financial analyst or anything, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna stay the same amount of money in a year. 00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:34.000 And you know what? 00:08:34.159 --> 00:08:36.799 With inflation, it's actually gonna lose, right? 00:08:58.720 --> 00:09:06.799 Jesus uses this several times in stories that he tells in the New Testament to say this: like, if we're not investing, there won't be any return. 00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:16.480 If we're not doing anything with our faith and stepping out and praying and joining a group, and yes, maybe I think some of you after this Sunday, I would hope you would think about all of us grow as a church and go, how are we growing and investing so that there might be a return, so that our communities flourish, our city cities flourish, our families flourish, because we're just to set the scene. 00:09:50.159 --> 00:09:56.879 A few months ago, I was reading through the pastoral epistles, which are like 1st and 2 Timothy and Titus in your New Testament. 00:09:57.039 --> 00:09:59.919 These are letters that one pastor wrote to another pastor. 00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:04.399 His name was Paul, and he wrote to Timothy and to Titus, and these were like his proteges. 00:10:04.639 --> 00:10:07.679 So when we were thinking about Protege Sunday, I was thinking about his letters. 00:10:07.840 --> 00:10:10.720 What was he saying to his proteges? 00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:28.960 And just that first letter to Timothy, 1 Timothy, there's a couple of passages that really jump out because they're really books about investment and about Paul warning Timothy, like to be careful with what he's been given, but to also be active with what he's been given. 00:10:29.039 --> 00:10:30.240 Okay, look at some of these verses. 00:10:30.320 --> 00:10:32.720 Here's 1 Timothy 1, verse 3. 00:10:32.879 --> 00:10:35.039 He opens this at the very beginning of his letter. 00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:40.960 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain in Ephesus, he tells uh Timothy. 00:10:41.120 --> 00:10:41.519 Why? 00:10:41.840 --> 00:10:48.480 So that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor devote themselves to myths. 00:10:48.639 --> 00:10:49.200 Look at this. 00:10:49.360 --> 00:10:57.279 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 00:10:57.440 --> 00:10:58.240 There's a --> 00:11:04.080 Be careful. 00:11:04.240 --> 00:11:11.759 Like, watch out for people that are teaching other doctrines and make sure you're teaching and protecting the doctrine of love that issues from a pure heart. 00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:19.440 Just a couple of verses later, 1 Timothy 1.18, he says this this charge, there's that word again, I entrust to you. 00:11:19.840 --> 00:11:21.360 I'm entrusting you with something. 00:11:21.519 --> 00:11:25.679 Like I'm giving you something, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies. 00:11:25.759 --> 00:11:26.879 Look what look at this. 00:11:27.120 --> 00:11:34.159 That by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. 00:11:34.559 --> 00:11:38.320 By rejecting this, some have made a shipwreck of their faith. 00:11:38.720 --> 00:11:48.480 There's there's people that their faith was cruising and it ended up being careened into a rock and having damage to their own faith. 00:11:48.799 --> 00:11:49.279 Why? 00:11:49.840 --> 00:11:53.039 Because they weren't protecting the charge entrusted to them. 00:11:53.519 --> 00:11:55.679 They weren't doing anything with what had been given to them. night these nine months, in the future, they're going to continue to train in unique ways. 00:13:48.639 --> 00:13:53.519 And there's gonna be this muscle that is built because of their investment. is falsely called knowledge, for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. 00:14:15.679 --> 00:14:19.440 I love this in the letter, he talks about shipwrecking the faith, swerving from the us in this room where that's true, whether it's a shipwreck of the faith or a swerving of the faith. 00:14:34.240 --> 00:14:43.840 And what what is being said to Timothy is being said to you now, which is how might you guard the deposit that's entrusted to you and invest it well? 00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:45.519 Man, you have a seed of faith. 00:14:45.600 --> 00:14:47.360 Man, you have a little bit of how are you gonna water that? 00:14:47.440 --> 00:14:50.080 That's another biblical metaphor, like an agricultural metaphor. 00:14:50.240 --> 00:14:52.000 Like you've been one seed's been 00:15:45.440 --> 00:16:02.399 And I can tell you, you guys, man, watching these proteges grow in these things, persisting, not neglecting the gift, practicing, keeping a close watch, all these things that Paul is telling Timothy, as I've seen them invest, one of the ways that investment is returning is in their relationships. 00:16:02.799 --> 00:16:15.519 In their relationships with their family, with their friends, you guys, in this church, our church is a stronger and better church because of 14 people that have invested in their faith over these nine months. 00:16:15.919 --> 00:16:18.159 My trying to get to know people in my midweek group, and they're awesome, but I just didn't feel tied down to awakening, and so I was considering looking at other churches, and then I got nominated for applying and talking to Nasim and Chris, I just felt like this was um one thing that God wanted me to say yes to, um, for me to just give up a couple months to see if this is really where he wanted 00:26:17.599 --> 00:26:37.119 So I applied to Protege, and I was like, if I'm going to show up to church every Wednesday morning for nine months straight, um, right before church, and learn about God and pray and just be in community, I was so certain that when I went to work, I was going to be just so happy and so filled, um, just really not phased by anything that work through at me. 00:27:52.880 And I also didn't think he really loved us as much as he did, because I thought, God, if you loved us, I don't think you would let work, especially in the Silicon Valley, I don't think you would let it get this hard and this tiring and this exhausting. 00:27:53.039 --> 00:27:55.680 Um, so I wrestled a lot with that. 00:27:55.839 --> 00:28:04.000 Um and thankfully, there's scripture that definitely helped me stay rooted and stay grounded. 00:28:04.160 --> 00:28:12.319 Um, that's not to say scripture is like a band-aid fix over anything, but I think I was just very encouraged by this um verse, and I want to share with you as well. 00:28:12.480 --> 00:28:23.839 So if you guys would all open your Bibles or take out your phones, we're gonna be in um James in the New Testament, and um yeah, I'll read it out. 00:28:23.920 --> 00:28:26.400 Just at the very beginning, we're gonna be in verses one through four. 00:28:28.400 --> 00:28:36.400 And James says, James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes scattered among the nations, greetings. 00:28:36.960 --> 00:28:45.519 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 00:28:46.079 --> 00:28:51.920 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 00:28:53.359 --> 00:29:00.960 And I think this verse, the main thing for me is that word perseverance, like Nasim said, that was just something that I was investing in this year. 00:29:01.279 --> 00:29:17.039 Because I think perseverance has a weight or just a meaning of being more like strong, and just by the skin of your teeth, you you just barely get by what you've what So I want to share that with you all. 00:29:32.240 --> 00:29:44.720 Um, the Greek translation for the word perseverance is to persist, to withstand, to patiently bear all things, and to be immovable or firmly fixed in place. 00:29:45.599 --> 00:30:04.640 And the patiently bear all things part is something that really stood out to me because I think when we go through trials and we're being more patient with it, it's more that surrender of saying, God, I I don't really know why I'm in this situation, but I don't want to rush through it and I want to be patient with it. 00:30:04.960 --> 00:30:11.599 Um, because I think a posture of patience is is a little different than an attitude of perseverance. 00:30:11.839 --> 00:30:23.519 So as you guys go into your weeks, um I just want to be
