as it's slipping, I s I grab the toilet paper, but something else slips out of my hand. 00:04:07.759 --> 00:04:13.680 My phone slips out of my hand, and so I save the toilet paper, and then no lie, on the ground, and I'm stuck holding toilet paper. 00:04:31.600 --> 00:04:47.120 And right there, one of the I think most important questions we can ask in life, I was confronted with as I was holding that you cannot afford to let fall? 00:04:58.240 --> 00:05:00.000 Because here's the reality, isn't it true? 00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:25.680 We're all like juggling and carrying so many things in our lives, and they all feel important, they all take up some sort of space, and the minute one thing begins to kind of budge, we just react to what's most urgent, we react to what's needed, and in doing so, oftentimes, isn't it true that we can drop what's most important in our lives? 00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:32.560 What is it for you that you cannot afford to let fall? 00:05:33.519 --> 00:05:56.720 I've known a few men that I've talked to and journeyed with that the desire to provide for their family what they didn't have, and so they worked countless hours, 80 hours a week, and yet they're not present for their kids, and their family is in mid-flight. 00:05:57.519 --> 00:06:07.199 Marriages are in that same area as we rush around for those of you who have families, and you rush your kid to every single sport, and you're just like ships in the night. 00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:11.439 And your marriage is in mid-flight right now, isn't it? 00:06:13.040 --> 00:06:25.680 Or you're so like focused on being successful, that your spirituality, your walk with Jesus' significance is in mid-flight right now. 00:06:26.879 --> 00:06:34.240 What is it in your life that you cannot afford to let fall? 00:06:34.480 --> 00:06:47.279 See, we know this, we get this, we understand this, this life axiom because we see it in other people so clearly, but it's hard to see in ourselves that misplaced priorities lead to a misspent life. 00:06:48.160 --> 00:06:56.079 And if you've been around some people and you you watch the end of their life and you they look back with like, I wish I would have professor, yeah, was a professor at Dallas Theological, he'd say it this way, as a commencement speech to these seminary students. 00:07:30.639 --> 00:07:35.519 He said, I'm not afraid that you will fail. 00:07:35.759 --> 00:07:39.839 My fear is not that you'll fail, but that you'll succeed in doing the wrong things. 00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:49.040 What is it that you cannot afford to let fall? 00:07:51.439 --> 00:07:53.199 Have you ever thought about this? 00:07:53.759 --> 00:07:58.560 What is it for us as a church that we can't afford to let fall? 00:07:59.360 --> 00:08:00.240 What are the things? 00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:08.240 We're juggling all of this stuff in life as a church, as a community, as the Jesus people walking with him in Silicon Valley. 00:08:08.399 --> 00:08:15.360 What is the thing that we go, no, we don't want to drop and have floating in the air. 00:08:16.079 --> 00:08:29.040 And by the way, the tech companies, marketing agencies, entertainment has answered this question with crystal clarity. 00:08:29.439 --> 00:08:36.080 Their answer, and they actually put a value to it, their answer is this generation. 00:08:37.120 --> 00:08:45.919 What they can't afford to let fall is this generation, because if you don't capture the hearts and minds of the next generation, you're gonna be out of business eventually. 00:08:47.039 --> 00:09:00.080 And they spend billions of dollars capturing the attention and keeping the attention of the next generation because that's what a generation is worth to them. 00:09:01.360 --> 00:09:03.759 See, what is it that we can't afford to let fall? 00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:05.440 It's this generation. 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:14.480 Another way to ask this, think about this, is what's at stake if we don't? 00:09:16.320 --> 00:09:19.679 What's at stake if we don't reach this generation? 00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:33.759 You know, uh in the book of Judges, I think we get a picture of what's at stake if we as a community, as a church, as the church, don't answer that question well. 00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:41.360 Now, Judges was written about 200 years after Israel entered the promised land uh under Joshua. 00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:44.720 Let me give you a little history if uh you're not familiar with it. 00:09:44.879 --> 00:09:48.960 Uh Moses was the great liberator of Israel. 00:09:49.120 --> 00:09:51.519 They're in bondage in Egypt for 400 years. 00:09:51.679 --> 00:09:56.000 God raises up Moses, he goes and he says, Let my people go. 00:09:56.240 --> 00:09:56.720 Yeah. 00:09:56.879 --> 00:10:00.000 And God uses a miraculous intervention. 00:10:00.159 --> 00:10:02.080 The people of Israel are freed. 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:07.360 They are now wandering in the wilderness for 40 years under his leadership. 00:10:07.600 --> 00:10:14.879 And then God raises up a young leader under Moses named Joshua, and Joshua leads the people into the promised land. 00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:18.639 Now, these people gotta encounter God working in incredible ways. 00:10:18.799 --> 00:10:25.039 When they crossed uh through the Jordan that flood stage, God stopped up the river so they could walk and try ground. 00:10:25.120 --> 00:10:35.120 When they're stepping to formidable foes, God says, Hey, by the way, I just want you to like, you know, do like a worship service around the walls of the city called Jericho. 00:10:35.360 --> 00:10:36.080 Like, what do you mean? 00:10:36.159 --> 00:10:36.399 Yeah. 00:10:36.559 --> 00:10:39.600 So march around the wall and just sing. 00:10:41.039 --> 00:10:45.039 Oh, that's that's a real good military campaign, God. 00:10:45.200 --> 00:10:46.720 You brought us here to sing. 00:10:46.879 --> 00:10:47.919 Thank you very much. 00:10:48.159 --> 00:10:50.879 And they do it day one, they say, let's do it another day. 00:10:51.039 --> 00:10:52.000 Okay, another day. 00:10:52.080 --> 00:11:01.759 They're blessed in the horns, and do it seven days, and they do it seven days, and then they do it seven more times that day, and they watch God miraculously the walls fall down. 00:11:01.919 --> 00:11:04.399 They gotta see God show up. 00:11:05.600 --> 00:11:06.399 Judges. 00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:10.320 It's 200 years after that moment. 00:11:11.200 --> 00:11:20.480 And we get this picture of what's at stake if we don't answer the question well, what we cannot afford to let fall. 00:11:20.639 --> 00:11:23.360 Notice how the author of Judges says it. 00:11:23.519 --> 00:11:38.720 He says, The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him, these who walked in and stepped by faith into the promised land, and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel. 00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:42.960 Those who had grown up and watched, they weren't necessarily stepping out faith. 00:11:43.039 --> 00:11:49.120 They were the kids watching uh, you know, their parents step into this new season. 00:11:49.279 --> 00:11:51.120 Then notice what happens. 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:57.120 After that, whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors. 00:11:57.679 --> 00:12:04.240 Another generation grew up who neither knew the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. 00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:05.919 Think about that. 00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:15.360 Not too far after, let my people go, crossing into the promised land. 00:12:16.159 --> 00:12:24.879 An entire generation grew up that did not know God or what God had done. 00:12:25.120 --> 00:12:27.600 And here's the consequences or the reality. 00:12:27.759 --> 00:12:30.639 Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord. 00:12:30.799 --> 00:12:35.120 They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. 00:12:35.200 --> 00:12:39.840 They followed and worshipped very gods of peoples around him. 00:12:40.720 --> 00:12:48.000 We see actually in this text three generations, and there's this progression here, and we see it repeated throughout history. 00:12:48.159 --> 00:12:59.679 And it doesn't have to be, but it's just this kind of reality when we just think that our faith will just translate or transmit to the next generation, and we're not intentional with it. 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:03.360 First generation knew and experienced God. 00:13:03.679 --> 00:13:13.120 They stepped out by faith and watched God part the Jordan, walls come tumbling down, and they gotta see God do incredible work. 00:13:13.279 --> 00:13:18.000 The second generation knew of God, but didn't experience Him. 00:13:18.639 --> 00:13:33.759 Friends, uh, for those of us who are followers of Jesus and we have kids, so often we want to save our kids from things that are hard, and they miss out on a God who's working in the middle of it and shaping them. 00:13:34.320 --> 00:13:37.840 And they don't have to take a step of faith and trust. 00:13:38.559 --> 00:13:41.039 See, they knew of God, but they didn't experience him. 00:13:41.200 --> 00:13:49.919 They saw their parents' faith, and so they had, hey, that God's great, but I don't know that I can trust him, but I I I'm confident my parents could. 00:13:50.320 --> 00:13:52.159 I didn't experience his work. 00:13:52.399 --> 00:13:58.720 And then a third generation grew up that neither knew God or experienced him. 00:13:59.840 --> 00:14:11.759 Now, here's what's kind of interesting, and I look at the generations today, and we look at our church, we say it this way: we're a four-generation church that's for this generation. 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:19.120 And somebody corrected me after a first service said, No, Ryan, we're a five-generation church because her mom comes to our church and she's amazing. 00:14:19.279 --> 00:14:24.879 She's like in her 90s, and so we're a five-generation church that's for this generation. 00:14:25.039 --> 00:14:30.080 Doesn't sound as cool, but that's way cooler than having five generations there. 00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:38.320 But here's something when you kind of look back on the history of the church uh across the generations that we tend to miss. 00:14:38.639 --> 00:15:04.639 Today's generational uh breakdown, uh baby boomers, those of you who are 58 to 76 years of age-ish, somewhere around in there, um during your kind of um adolescence to 20-something, experts were saying that the church was gonna die, that Christianity was obsolete and irrelevant, and it would eventually go away. 00:15:04.799 --> 00:15:12.799 Uh the rise of the summer of love and hippie uh movement and all of this, it was like, we're beyond that. 00:15:13.759 --> 00:15:19.360 And the baby boomers were the original generation that left the church, by the way. 00:15:19.600 --> 00:15:24.159 Now, something happened in the 70s, late 60s, early 70s. 00:15:24.320 --> 00:15:25.440 There was a movement of God. 00:15:25.600 --> 00:15:26.960 There's actually two movements. 00:15:27.120 --> 00:15:31.200 One was called the Jesus movement, and the other was called the renewal movement. 00:15:31.279 --> 00:15:50.480 And we saw the Jesus movement sweep across, starting from the West Coast, and the renewal movement worked in the charismatic circles and even the Catholic circles, and we saw this movement of God that was a fresh move where people were saying, this is gonna be obsolete and the church is no longer needed, and we saw revival break out. 00:15:51.759 --> 00:16:18.799 And I'd like to say that then as we move down from baby boomers to Gen Xers, and if your Gen Xers 42 to 57 years of age, uh, that we look at this and we see this a little bit of progression if you're looking at it in the macro, not in the micro, but uh, because there's always God working in different areas and ways and through people significantly, but these macro movements of God, where it would just we haven't seen. 00:16:18.879 --> 00:16:25.679 We've seen a generation that you know navigated the postmodern shift over the last you know several decades. 00:16:25.919 --> 00:16:33.039 And and Gen Xer is one, we don't like to be labeled, and we're kind of rebelling from our parents and you know, fiercely independent. 00:16:33.200 --> 00:16:37.360 And and by the way, we thought that we brought in all the arts into the church. 00:16:37.519 --> 00:16:38.879 Um, we didn't. 00:16:39.600 --> 00:16:42.799 We brought in some candles, but that's been around for centuries. 00:16:43.039 --> 00:16:49.279 Um but baby boomers, by the way, they brought in a new way of doing church. 00:16:49.360 --> 00:17:02.159 They actually are the ones that brought in drums into the church, and they're the ones that brought the arts and uh all different things into the church to bring the gospel in a relevant, powerful way to their generation and generation after that. 00:17:03.279 --> 00:17:19.119 Now when we see the millennials, something that's happened in the church over the last several decades, that as a millennial, did you know that 59% of millennials who grew up in the church will disconnect in a significant way? 00:17:19.680 --> 00:17:21.680 Many never to return. 00:17:22.559 --> 00:17:26.720 And so we're seeing the same progression play out. 00:17:27.440 --> 00:17:33.440 And part of it is back in the baby boomer days, there was this heart to beat to reach this generation. 00:17:33.519 --> 00:17:43.920 You saw campus ministries rise up, crusade, campus crusade for Christ, navigators uh sweeping this heart for this next generation, and somehow in the church we've lost it. 00:17:44.720 --> 00:17:49.599 Just consider, man, as long as I'm coming and I'm getting my needs met, I'm okay. 00:17:49.680 --> 00:17:54.319 Uh, you know, if other people aren't getting their needs met, as long as through it, but just think about Gen Z, by the way. 00:18:20.960 --> 00:18:29.359 They're also been called the I generation because they are always have grown up with social media and the iPhone, a like, what is he doing? 00:18:37.839 --> 00:18:39.359 What is he doing? 00:18:43.039 --> 00:18:57.519 And thinking about as a kid walking through the great recession that we had, and then another decade later walking through this worldwide global pandemic and all the rest of it, you you can feel like, is there any hope, right? 00:19:00.079 --> 00:19:02.400 How do we even navigate this? 00:19:03.599 --> 00:19:08.400 I just want to give a word to you, Gen Zers. 00:19:09.599 --> 00:19:14.559 Did you know that, by the way, the generation before baby boomers, what's their name? 00:19:14.880 --> 00:19:15.440 Anyone? 00:19:15.839 --> 00:19:17.279 The greatest generation. 00:19:17.759 --> 00:19:22.160 Do you know what the greatest generation was called before World War II? 00:19:23.039 --> 00:19:26.720 Sociologist, and um, it was across newspapers. 00:19:26.799 --> 00:19:28.960 There was widespread concern for that generation. 00:19:29.039 --> 00:19:33.440 They're coming out of the Great Depression, uh, and there's just widespread concern. 00:19:33.680 --> 00:19:36.559 They were called the lost generation. 00:19:37.680 --> 00:19:43.279 Of a hundred men, young men that were uh interviewed, uh what was it? 00:19:43.359 --> 00:19:46.079 Here, let me get it just so I'm exactly right. 00:19:46.400 --> 00:19:54.319 Um, 75% were suffering from a health defect induced by mental anxiety. 00:19:55.759 --> 00:19:59.039 That doesn't sound too dissimilar from today, right? 00:20:01.680 --> 00:20:08.000 And the lost generation who navigated World War II eventually would become known as the greatest generation. 00:20:10.160 --> 00:20:16.480 See, your circumstances don't have to dictate your destiny and what God has for you. 00:20:17.119 --> 00:20:19.359 And yeah, we live in turbulent times. 00:20:19.599 --> 00:20:28.319 There have always been turbulent times, but we have a great God who stops up the Jordan and walls come crambling down. 00:20:28.480 --> 00:20:38.559 And as I just look at this generational breakdown, here's what I see: I see a fresh moment for a wide-sweeping move of God across all the generations. 00:20:39.680 --> 00:20:44.160 Like, isn't it time that we see a move of God? 00:20:46.319 --> 00:20:50.400 Young people, you're in your 20s, you're in your teens. 00:20:50.640 --> 00:20:51.680 Did you know this? 00:20:52.000 --> 00:20:56.400 That when God wants to bring about a change, he often chooses and uses young people. 00:20:59.680 --> 00:21:12.799 See, we kind of think somehow in the church, we've said, well, one day when you get mature enough, when you're not so, you know, confident or cocky or you need to get more wisdom under your belt. 00:21:12.880 --> 00:21:19.119 And God's going, I'm gonna choose and use young people to bring about worldwide change. 00:21:19.599 --> 00:21:20.799 Think about this. 00:21:21.200 --> 00:21:37.200 When God wanted to save uh the people of Israel, they're just a small tribe from famine, and then actually bless all the surrounding nations, he put a dream in a cocky little teenager, heart and mind named Joseph. 00:21:38.559 --> 00:21:43.680 And God had to spend a few years developing them, I think 13 to be exact. 00:21:44.559 --> 00:21:49.279 And God used Joseph to deliver his people and all of the people in that time. 00:21:49.519 --> 00:21:50.640 Think about this. 00:21:51.039 --> 00:21:59.759 When God wanted to restore the kingdom of Israel under corrupt leadership, he sent Samuel to identify the next king. 00:22:00.319 --> 00:22:05.440 And Samuel's looking at all these great young men from the line of chastity. 00:22:05.920 --> 00:22:10.079 And God says, not that one, not that one, not that one. 00:22:10.319 --> 00:22:12.640 It's like there's no more. 00:22:13.359 --> 00:22:15.279 And so he's like, there is. 00:22:16.319 --> 00:22:23.039 David, who would become the greatest king of Israel, his father didn't even invite to the table. 00:22:23.119 --> 00:22:25.119 He was out watching sheep. 00:22:25.599 --> 00:22:27.039 And he got overlooked. 00:22:27.200 --> 00:22:33.839 And some of you have been overlooked, and God's saying, No, no, no, I haven't overlooked you yet, right now. 00:22:34.960 --> 00:22:36.640 Think about this, Esther. 00:22:39.279 --> 00:22:53.200 When God wanted to save the people of Israel from a genocide, he raised up this young woman who would become queen, who had the courage to put her life on the line for her people. 00:22:53.599 --> 00:23:18.799 Last week, Roland talked about Daniel and these four young men: Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abindigo, teenagers, ripped out of their homeland, stripped from their identity, their culture, called to embrace a brand new way that's antithetical to all that they knew, and with resolve in their heart, they said, we will not bow the knee, because it wasn't the age thing. 00:23:18.960 --> 00:23:20.720 They still had a
