00:00:28.960 --> 00:00:31.839 In fact, if I ask you, who do you follow on social media? 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:33.439 You could give me some names, right? 00:00:33.520 --> 00:00:37.679 Or who's a celebrity you follow, or is there a business person you follow? 00:00:37.759 --> 00:00:39.359 Or who do you follow on LinkedIn? 00:00:39.600 --> 00:00:42.240 Or who's an author that you follow? 00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:48.079 Or maybe there's a business person or a musician or an artist that you follow them. 00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:50.240 Now let me ask you why. 00:00:50.560 --> 00:01:08.879 If I literally had you jot down the reasons that I follow these certain people is because let me suggest you want to be like them, you admire them, uh they've blazed a trail that you you think you could learn from them. 00:01:09.840 --> 00:01:12.719 But everybody follows something or someone. 00:01:12.959 --> 00:01:14.799 In fact, there's a subtle one. 00:01:15.120 --> 00:01:19.200 Many of us follow what psychologists call a script. 00:01:19.680 --> 00:01:24.400 A script that happened over our family of origin and our growing up years. 00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:39.200 And the script developed where no one said you're supposed to live your life like this, but it kind of went like, in my case, uh you need to work really, really hard, never be lazy if you're sitting around something's wrong. 00:01:39.359 --> 00:01:46.239 Uh, you need to be successful in school, so you need to work hard and get good grades. 00:01:46.319 --> 00:01:52.640 Uh, because my father was a great athlete, you need to be athletic, which thankfully God gave me some gifts. 00:01:53.200 --> 00:02:00.239 And then it was both my parents were educators and not just, you know, bachelors, not just masters, not just after the, you know. 00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:07.359 And so there was this script that you, by the way, also, our family has an external reputation. 00:02:07.599 --> 00:02:10.879 Don't ever do anything that makes us look bad. 00:02:11.599 --> 00:02:14.960 And so, pleasing people and how you appear. 00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:20.800 For some of you, it was a script that said, uh, you need to go to a certain college. 00:02:20.879 --> 00:02:30.000 And if you don't go to a certain college or university, or you need to get certain grades, and there's certain professions that make you a someone, and there's certain professions that make you a nobody. 00:02:30.319 --> 00:02:35.439 And we all have kind of this script, and some of us rebel against the script and say, I'm not gonna do that. 00:02:35.599 --> 00:02:50.240 And others, we have this unconscious, almost invisible hands that push us in a direction, and almost without understanding it, we're following sort of a set of a vision, a value, a principle. 00:02:50.800 --> 00:02:54.080 And it often doesn't deliver at all what we want. 00:02:54.319 --> 00:02:59.199 And some of us don't even know why in the world am I doing what I'm doing? 00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:10.400 Or when we rebel or when we say, I don't want to do that, we find ourselves in some activities or addictions or relationships or codependency that makes life very, very confusing. 00:03:10.560 --> 00:03:13.759 And into all of that, Jesus says, okay, stop. 00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:15.360 Come to me. 00:03:15.840 --> 00:03:17.360 I'll give you rest. 00:03:18.240 --> script for you that brings joy to your life, productivity, and as you follow, purpose. 00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:56.479 And what you find in Scripture is that Jesus calls the disciples and he calls us to follow. 00:03:56.800 --> 00:04:03.439 And the call to follow is a, you'll notice in your notes, I jotted this, it's an intentional apprenticeship. 00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:14.319 Sometimes we think following Jesus is sort of like maybe coming to a weekend meeting, trying to be a nice person, reading the Bible a little bit, and telling someone maybe something that happened to you. 00:04:14.800 --> 00:04:28.560 But to follow, when Jesus said to the disciples, or specifically to Peter, follow me, from a Jewish mindset, and what this means is I'm going to become an apprentice of this rabbi or teacher, and it meant three things. 00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:35.120 Whatever he teaches, I want to master what he's saying, but second, I want to emulate his life. 00:04:35.360 --> 00:04:42.399 So when Jesus said to them, follow me, he wasn't just saying, physically follow me, or he wasn't just saying, embrace my teaching. 00:04:42.560 --> 00:04:48.000 It was a, I want you to learn to think the way I think, to speak the way I speak, to act the way I act. 00:04:48.160 --> 00:04:53.040 So if you were following a rabbi, you wanted to become like him. 00:04:53.839 --> 00:05:02.720 And Luke 6.40 says, when a disciple or a learner or a student is fully trained, he will be just like his teacher. 00:05:02.959 --> 00:05:08.959 So the goal isn't simply that you get direction, you follow a path and you follow teaching. 00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:12.319 It's actually that you become more and more like Jesus Himself. 00:05:12.560 --> 00:05:18.079 And so with that, we pick up the formal story in Luke chapter 5. 00:05:18.160 --> 00:05:20.560 I'll put it in your notes if you don't have your Bible with you. 00:05:20.879 --> 00:05:25.279 It begins there at verse 1 and goes through verse 11. 00:05:25.439 --> 00:05:33.120 From the context, we know that the early disciples, first, they just started hanging out with Jesus. 00:05:33.360 --> 00:05:40.720 So in John chapter 1, Jesus walks by, and John the Baptist says, Behold, the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. 00:05:40.800 --> 00:05:44.720 And Peter, being a good follower of John the Baptist, says, Hey, hey, where are you staying? 00:05:44.879 --> 00:05:46.560 And Jesus says, Come see. 00:05:46.720 --> 00:05:48.000 And so they explored. 00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:55.040 And then we learned from the early chapters of John that this followership was kind of part-time, and they started to hang out with Jesus. 00:05:55.199 --> 00:05:56.079 They became friends. 00:05:56.240 --> 00:05:57.439 They went to a wedding. 00:05:57.839 --> 00:05:59.120 He was going to take a little trip. 00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:05.680 So he took a little time off from work and went on a little part-time trip, and they went through Samaria and he got to see a revival there. 00:06:05.920 --> 00:06:14.399 And so what you're going to read is someone who's been exploring, who actually believes Jesus is the Messiah, he's spending time with him, he's drawn to him. 00:06:14.800 --> 00:06:31.519 And now we're going to find this sort of official moment where he's called by Jesus to be a full-time follower, to join a band of brothers who would embrace a message, align with the cause, and desire to become like Jesus and fulfill his mission. 00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:45.439 Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around him and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the lake, Genezaret, and he saw two boats lying on the edge of the lake, but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 00:06:45.680 --> 00:06:51.439 He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and he asked him to put out a little way from the land. 00:06:51.920 --> 00:06:55.600 And he sat down and began to teach the people from the boat. 00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:06.560 He could have stood, but when a rabbi was teaching with authority, he would sit down. 00:07:06.800 --> 00:07:08.720 He's speaking for God now. 00:07:09.360 --> 00:07:11.360 So there's thousands of people. 00:07:22.720 --> 00:07:28.879 When he'd finished speaking, he said to Simon, Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch. 00:07:29.199 --> 00:07:34.000 Simon answered and said, Master, we've worked all night and caught nothing. 00:07:34.319 --> 00:07:37.680 But I will do as you say and let down the nets. 00:07:37.839 --> 00:07:43.439 I mean, I think Peter's thinking, Rabbi, you're a really great teacher and you really know God's word. 00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:46.959 And I I you don't know much about fishing. 00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:53.279 The reason we get up, you know, before dark and come out is they get the fish here very down deep. 00:07:53.360 --> 00:07:55.360 When the light comes up, they come up to feed. 00:07:55.519 --> 00:07:57.439 We've been here, we've got nothing. 00:07:57.600 --> 00:07:59.759 This is, you don't catch fish right now. 00:08:00.160 --> 00:08:06.160 So there's a very important moment of this is logically impossible what's about to happen. 00:08:06.879 --> 00:08:10.079 But he says, if you say so, okay. 00:08:10.319 --> 00:08:15.680 When they'd done this, they were enclosed by a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break. 00:08:15.839 --> 00:08:19.360 So they signaled to the other partners in the boat for them to come and help them. 00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:25.040 And they came and they filled both of the boats so that they began to sink. 00:08:25.279 --> 00:08:36.000 But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus' feet and said, Go away, or literally depart from me, for I'm a sinful man. 00:08:36.399 --> 00:08:43.200 For amazement had seized him and all his companions, because the catch of fish that they had taken. 00:08:43.440 --> 00:08:48.000 And so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partnering with Simon. 00:08:48.240 --> 00:08:52.320 And Jesus said to Simon, Do not fear. 00:08:52.720 --> 00:08:54.799 From now on you'll be catching men. 00:08:55.039 --> 00:09:00.799 And when they brought their boats to the land, they left everything and followed him. 00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:02.799 Couple points to observe. 00:09:03.440 --> 00:09:22.879 You know, sometimes when we feel like following Jesus, you know, really being committed, doing everything God wants us to do, I think there's a little bit of a, I'm gonna step up, a little bit like the few, the proud, and the marines, and God always demands a lot, and it's really hard and it's really difficult, but I guess I'll be one of those people. 00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:26.639 Or on the other side, you think that's the way it sounds. 00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:28.480 I don't think I really want to be one of those people. 00:09:28.639 --> 00:09:31.120 You know, I like you, Jesus, but this is a bit much. 00:09:32.399 --> 00:09:35.440 What was it that motivated Peter to follow? 00:09:38.559 --> 00:09:39.919 He's a fisherman. 00:09:40.320 --> 00:09:43.120 If he was in the Silicon Valley, it wouldn't have been fish. 00:09:43.360 --> 00:09:44.960 He'd be doing a startup. 00:09:47.519 --> 00:09:51.360 And within under a year, he would have a multi-billion dollar company. 00:09:54.240 --> 00:09:59.600 He spoke in his language, it was his goodness, it was his power. 00:10:00.399 --> 00:10:02.799 He believed he was the Messiah. 00:10:03.279 --> 00:10:08.799 He'd heard his teaching, I mean, he just heard a message, likely the Sermon on the Mount. 00:10:09.759 --> 00:10:12.000 But it was this generosity. 00:10:12.240 --> 00:10:27.600 It was, if, if what you really want out of life is a lot of fish, or a lot of money, or a lot of fame, or a lot of likes, or a lot of stuff, or a house here and a house there, and a house there, and to get to drive this kind of car, if if that's really what you want, Pete, watch this. 00:10:30.159 --> 00:10:35.200 And in that moment, what he realized is you're the author of life. 00:10:36.320 --> 00:10:44.879 My real direction, what really matters, how I was made, the script that the eternal God of the universe has for me. 00:10:46.799 --> 00:10:53.679 And he recognized as he got close, you are not only powerful and good, but you are holy. 00:10:53.919 --> 00:11:00.559 I am not fit, I don't belong with someone as pure and holy and loving and generous. 00:11:00.720 --> 00:11:02.720 And he says, Don't be afraid. 00:11:04.240 --> 00:11:07.840 And did you notice they they left everything and followed him? 00:11:09.120 --> 00:11:14.320 I don't think he felt like he was making a big sacrificial decision. 00:11:14.480 --> 00:11:19.679 Although what we know is he was he was a very uh, he had business partners. 00:11:20.480 --> 00:11:26.720 He was, we know Peter, at least of all the disciples, he's the only one we at least know for sure he was married, he's got a family. 00:11:27.039 --> 00:11:31.919 This is a big moment motivated by God's goodness and power. 00:11:32.399 --> 00:11:40.320 And I was thinking about um following, and I'll share some of the lessons as I've learned, but I thought, what exactly? 00:11:40.639 --> 00:11:46.879 I mean, if you could read through all the gospels and sort of have it all in front of you, Jesus wants him to follow. 00:11:47.039 --> 00:11:48.399 What does he want him to learn? 00:11:48.559 --> 00:11:50.080 What does he want him to follow? 00:11:50.320 --> 00:11:54.720 And so if you'll if you'll look on your notes, what I did is I gave you a quick little Bible study. 00:11:54.799 --> 00:11:58.000 I'm just gonna sort of give you a highlight. 00:11:58.240 --> 00:12:12.799 But the answer is the first thing he wanted them to learn was Jesus came, by the way, not as God, like with a Superman suit underneath and human flesh and acting like he was human, but whenever things got hard, he's really God. 00:12:13.039 --> 00:12:13.919 No, no, no. 00:12:14.159 --> 00:12:30.799 He was fully man who lived in complete dependency on the Father by the power of the Holy Spirit, and every miracle he did, every act of righteousness he did, he did as a fully human person without sin, dependent on the Father. 00:12:31.039 --> 00:12:38.320 So he's going to say, How I lived and how I walked and what I did is exactly how I want to model it for you. 00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:39.840 That's what rabbis do. 00:12:40.320 --> 00:12:45.600 And so the first lesson he wanted Peter and us to learn is dependency. 00:12:46.080 --> 00:12:47.679 John 5.30. 00:12:48.399 --> 00:12:53.279 He says, By myself, these are the words of Jesus, I can do nothing. 00:12:54.080 --> 00:13:01.279 I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself, but him who sent me. 00:13:02.240 --> 00:13:08.559 As Peter followed him, and as we follow him, there'd be a big crowd, and all of a sudden he disappears. 00:13:09.600 --> 00:13:18.080 In Mark chapter one, it's like hours and hours of teaching and healing and people crowding on, and a great while before dawn, where's Jesus? 00:13:18.720 --> 00:13:22.080 And they go find him, and he's out by this lonely place. 00:13:23.360 --> 00:13:25.200 He can't do this on his own. 00:13:25.360 --> 00:13:27.120 He's talking to the Father. 00:13:27.600 --> 00:13:30.399 Jesus modeled a fully dependent. 00:13:30.879 --> 00:13:34.000 I can't do this without you, Father. 00:13:34.159 --> 00:13:36.960 I need your power, Holy Spirit. 00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:39.440 And he wanted the disciples to understand that. 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:42.799 Second, he wanted them to get in on his mission. 00:13:43.519 --> 00:13:45.039 Jesus made his mission very clear. 00:13:45.200 --> 00:13:50.879 Luke 19, 10 says, For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which is lost. 00:13:51.120 --> 00:13:58.559 He wanted Peter to know, that's why I came and I want to help you be an instrument of mine to seek and save people. 00:13:58.799 --> 00:14:02.000 They're lost, they're hurting, they're struggling. 00:14:02.480 --> 00:14:04.879 The third thing he wanted them was to catch his heart. 00:14:05.519 --> 00:14:24.720 Matthew 25, he said, When you see the marginalized, when you see someone in prison, when you see someone who's poor, when you see a leper, when you see someone with AIDS, when you see someone whose life is a train wreck, I want you to feel about them the way I feel about them. 00:14:24.960 --> 00:14:28.080 And what Jesus did, he had compassion on them. 00:14:28.320 --> 00:14:33.200 He said, When you do it to the least of these, you're actually doing it unto me. 00:14:33.519 --> 00:14:43.200 He wanted Peter, this hardcore blue-collar fisherman, macho guy, to understand you need to be tender, you need to care about people. 00:14:43.440 --> 00:14:45.120 God doesn't see as man sees. 00:14:45.279 --> 00:14:48.159 Man looks on the outward appearance, God weighs the heart. 00:14:48.320 --> 00:14:50.320 Peter, I want you to see that. 00:14:51.120 --> 00:14:54.480 The next thing he wanted him to learn was his motives. 00:14:54.879 --> 00:15:06.080 John 4, 34, Jesus said, My food, my motivation, what drives me is to do the will of God and to accomplish his work. 00:15:06.720 --> 00:15:10.720 Not what people think, not what the culture says. 00:15:10.960 --> 00:15:20.159 Peter, I want you to know that you know, if getting a lot of fish or being famous or being rich, I gave you that, if that's what you wanted, this is even better, this is bigger, this is more important. 00:15:20.399 --> 00:15:24.799 My food, the motivation isn't that you use me to get your world figured out. 00:15:24.960 --> 00:15:29.440 The motivation is that you understand that God's got a purpose and a plan. 00:15:29.759 --> 00:15:32.559 And that's your drive, that's your motivation. 00:15:33.440 --> 00:15:39.679 And then it's very interesting, Jesus wanted Peter to learn to die well. 00:15:40.080 --> 00:16:00.639 I think I shared earlier, we uh do a lot of ministry in the Middle East, and uh we did some training for a group that we partner with, a couple hundred of their leaders from throughout the Middle East, and a number of the people that had come were from Iran and Iraq and some of the countries with it's the only go to be a follower of Jesus. 00:16:00.799 --> 00:16:06.080 And this huge revival is happening in Iran, it's the fastest growing church in the world right now. 00:16:06.399 --> 00:16:17.440 And as they were going back, the report we got from this group was the last thing they ask us, like, teach us really well, because they ask us, will you teach us to die well? 00:16:18.639 --> 00:16:21.919 They understood that there's more to life than now. 00:16:22.080 --> 00:16:26.639 They probably won't live very long by being a follower of Christ in Iran. 00:16:28.320 --> 00:16:35.440 And it's just, and Jesus taught the disciples, unless a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die, it remains by itself alone. 00:16:35.919 --> 00:16:38.559 But if it dies, it bears for much fruit. 00:16:38.799 --> 00:16:48.399 And so part of his journey is he trained them and he taught and then he modeled, and then about the last 18 months, the goal was to put them into training so they would learn to die. 00:16:50.399 --> 00:16:55.840 Now he died physically and then three days later rose from the dead, but they had to die to themselves. 00:16:56.000 --> 00:17:01.440 They were gonna have to learn to take up their cross and their agenda and follow him, and it would be very unpopular. 00:17:01.600 --> 00:17:03.200 And so that's part of what he's teaching them. 00:17:03.279 --> 00:17:04.400 And are you ready for this? 00:17:04.640 --> 00:17:10.720 He actually expected them to both think and believe that they should last Passover, and Jesus is gonna wash their feet, and we're gonna have all that exciting stuff that happens. 00:17:22.079 --> 00:17:28.480 And but as they're going in, they have a disagreement, and they're arguing about who is the greatest. 00:17:28.640 --> 00:17:34.319 I mean, after three years of Jesus, they're still arguing about who's number one. 00:17:34.559 --> 00:17:43.599 And Jesus gets them together, and he doesn't, he doesn't reprove them and say, you shouldn't be so ambitious, and why do you make want to make such a big impact? 00:17:43.680 --> 00:17:46.880 And why do you want God made us to be that way? 00:17:47.119 --> 00:17:50.079 But he says, let me tell you, there's a different way to get there. 00:17:50.400 --> 00:17:54.559 He says to them, if you want to be great, be a servant. 00:17:54.799 --> 00:17:59.920 If you want to be number one, actually be a slave and serve other people. 00:18:00.400 --> 00:18:02.880 And then he says this crazy, crazy thing. 00:18:02.960 --> 00:18:04.000 You kind of miss it. 00:18:04.240 --> 00:18:10.079 He says, My father has conferred a kingdom on me, and I now confer a kingdom on you. 00:18:10.319 --> 00:18:12.160 And these men have gone through it. 00:18:12.480 --> 00:18:18.000 He knows he's going to die, he knows he's gonna rise from the dead, he knows what they're gonna go through in the future. 00:18:18.160 --> 00:18:21.839 He says, I confer a kingdom on you to these eleven. 00:18:23.119 --> 00:18:33.039 And he says, And you will rule with me in the resurrection, and you will be on thrones and help judge the 12 tribes. 00:18:33.359 --> 00:18:49.680 He actually had a mindset that following him wasn't just temporal and wasn't just now, but a mindset of a future and a resurrection and what the Bible would teach about a new heaven and a new earth, and that you were a follower for eternity. 00:18:49.920 --> 00:18:54.160 It's like I was joking uh last week when my wife was giving me a hard time. 00:18:54.319 --> 00:18:58.799 Like, she says, Lessons from the first 50 years, do you think you're gonna live another 50? 00:18:59.039 --> 00:19:10.799 I said, No, but I think I'm gonna be following Jesus for another 500 million or zillion, because after this body dies, I'll be resurrected and I will still be following, I'll still be learning. 00:19:11.519 --> 00:19:15.599 So, what I want you to see now is is Peter's experience. 00:19:15.920 --> 00:19:20.880 Because I think this is where the lessons get, and then I'll maybe share some things that you can identify with. 00:19:21.279 --> 00:19:32.079 Uh I think sometimes we think, at least the way I grew up, um, these apostles and quote, people that were holy, they were all in stained glass. 00:19:32.319 --> 00:19:33.359 I remember going to church. 00:19:33.519 --> 00:19:44.400 We had this huge A-frame, and it was all stained glass, and you kind of have some pictures, and I just thought Peter and Paul, and you know, they just lived on another planet and they just had it all together. 00:19:44.720 --> 00:19:52.880 Of course, I had never read the New Testament, but and and I just want to show you Peter, did you notice his first steps? 00:19:52.960 --> 00:19:58.000 He just crawled like a baby, small in faith. 00:19:58.160 --> 00:19:59.359 It was a a crawl. 00:19:59.519 --> 00:20:02.000 Oh, John the Baptist said this, so where are you going? 00:20:02.319 --> 00:20:03.440 He just explored. 00:20:03.839 --> 00:20:16.559 Then he explored some more, and then he listened, and then he followed him around, and then he hung out with him, then he went to a wedding, and then he heard him teach, and then he realized you are the Messiah, and he came to personal faith. 00:20:16.960 --> 00:20:26.079 And then it was, you know, part-time trying to take time off from work to be more and more around Jesus, and then now his crawl becomes a bit of a walk. 00:20:26.400 --> 00:20:39.119 Okay, I'm going to leave my business, I'm going to leave my family for a season, and I'm going to join this band of brothers to go into training to fulfill this mission and become just like this rabbi. 00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:42.960 And so he leaves his boats. 00:20:43.200 --> 00:20:44.799 And he's making really good progress. 00:20:44.880 --> 00:20:48.799 And then a little bit later, remember, he stands in the ministry. 00:20:49.119 --> 00:20:56.240 Someone in the midst of it says, uh, Jesus says to his disciples, Okay, I'm doing all these miracles, all these teachings. 00:20:56.319 --> 00:20:57.359 Who do people say that I am? 00:20:57.519 --> 00:20:58.079 Remember this? 00:20:58.640 --> 00:21:02.799 And they say, Oh, some think John the Baptist raised from the dead, others an Old Testament prophet. 00:21:03.119 --> know, so you know, I'm in the car with the guys, and because my father was an alcoholic, at least I didn't drink just because I saw what that did, but I had the people skills, so I would be the guy that introduces to all the cute girls and all the bars, and we'd bar hop, and you know, I'd get home at you know two or three in the morning and Friday and Saturday night, and sometimes you know, I made it to church maybe once a month, and then I'd go to Bible study and get all fired up, and then I'd go hit the bars on Friday and Saturday, and and then I, you know, all I can tell you was my life was like I was schizophrenic, and I couldn't have been more sincere, and Dave would come and knock on my door, and it'd be like, I'd pretend I was asleep, like I do not want to meet with that some of those games again, and then with Christian friends, I put on this face, and then in the basketball guys, I put on this face, and with girls, I put on this face, and and I found myself
