00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:02.319
Welcome to the Awakening Church podcast.

00:00:02.479 --> 00:00:07.040
We pray this message encourages you and provides the hope and light of Jesus Christ.

00:00:07.200 --> 00:00:08.640
Thanks for tuning in.

00:00:19.519 --> 00:00:28.160
It was June of 2021, and I started, I shared part of this story when we began our Tri-Softer series.

00:00:30.239 --> 00:00:32.479
We happened to be up at Tahoe.

00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:38.799
There was a small gathering of pastors, a little conference with our mentors, Phil and Diane Comer.

00:00:39.200 --> 00:00:47.920
Now, me going into this after the last several years, exhausted, I wouldn't even use that word.

00:00:48.159 --> 00:00:50.479
You ever been there where you're beyond exhausted?

00:00:51.280 --> 00:00:51.840
Yeah.

00:00:52.159 --> 00:00:54.079
New parents are like, absolutely.

00:00:54.799 --> 00:00:55.439
Right?

00:00:56.399 --> 00:01:00.159
As I was thinking about it, I think the word I'd use is depleted.

00:01:00.560 --> 00:01:03.679
Just depleted, like just drained.

00:01:04.079 --> 00:01:11.840
Depleted to the point, and this is probably too far, but where you feel almost dead inside.

00:01:12.959 --> 00:01:17.920
Show up to this pastor's conference, and literally, it's a small gathering, maybe 50 people.

00:01:18.239 --> 00:01:19.439
Mentors are there.

00:01:26.159 --> 00:01:31.359
I remember telling Jenny within 24 hours of being there, let's go.

00:01:31.920 --> 00:01:32.879
Like, I'm done.

00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:34.159
I'm ready to be done.

00:01:34.319 --> 00:01:36.799
Thankfully, she's way more spiritual than me.

00:01:36.959 --> 00:01:38.879
And she said, No, you know.

00:01:39.359 --> 00:01:45.040
But have you been to that point where you're so depleted you can't even receive anymore?

00:01:45.359 --> 00:01:49.439
Like, even the good things that are coming into your life, you're just like, oh.

00:01:51.120 --> 00:01:54.959
And to be in that, my soul just wasn't in a good space.

00:01:55.120 --> 00:02:00.079
It'd been years uh back to back, of full of driving.

00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:04.319
And we sat down with Phil and Diane and we're talking.

00:02:04.400 --> 00:02:07.040
And I remember Phil asking me this question.

00:02:07.519 --> 00:02:08.960
He already knew the answer.

00:02:09.199 --> 00:02:10.400
He looked at me.

00:02:10.560 --> 00:02:15.120
Um he's like, Ryan, are you enjoying life?

00:02:17.520 --> 00:02:19.280
Are you enjoying life?

00:02:21.520 --> 00:02:21.840
No.

00:02:23.039 --> 00:02:24.960
It's a short answer, right?

00:02:25.199 --> 00:02:27.039
Are you really enjoying life?

00:02:27.199 --> 00:02:28.240
You know, it's interesting.

00:02:28.400 --> 00:02:37.680
We had a series back in December on joy, and when you think about joy, like joy should be one of the hallmarker calling cards for us as followers of Jesus.

00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:47.840
He said, you know, in John chapter 15, I've told you these things that my joy would be in you, and that your joy would be complete or full.

00:02:48.960 --> 00:03:09.520
And yet, if we're honest, the pace of life that we live, the pressure and the demands that we have, the stress and the anxiety, and this starts from high school or even younger on up, that we live in this frenzied state.

00:03:10.479 --> 00:03:13.599
That if we're really to answer the question, are you enjoying life?

00:03:13.759 --> 00:03:17.199
I would argue that most of us would be in that same space.

00:03:18.319 --> 00:03:19.520
Many of us.

00:03:19.840 --> 00:03:24.560
I don't I don't even really know how to do that.

00:03:25.840 --> 00:03:29.039
You know, there's this interesting uh rabbinic saying.

00:03:29.120 --> 00:03:32.879
Now, this isn't part of scripture, this is just uh uh what some rabbis used to say.

00:03:33.039 --> 00:03:40.639
So God will one day hold each of us accountable for all the things He created for us to enjoy, but we refuse to do so.

00:03:41.360 --> 00:03:47.360
Now, here's what's funny about that line, because I know some of you are like, oh, I got permission now, right?

00:03:47.520 --> 00:03:49.520
You're like, yeah, really?

00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:52.479
And others, you just put more guilt.

00:03:52.639 --> 00:03:55.759
You're like, I'm gonna be held accountable for that too.

00:03:57.520 --> 00:03:58.080
Right?

00:03:58.240 --> 00:04:03.360
How do we really begin to enter into this flourishing life?

00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:07.199
That's fundamentally what we've been talking for the last several weeks.

00:04:07.360 --> 00:04:14.319
Like, like Jesus said, I've come that you might have life and life to the full, flourishing, abundant life.

00:04:15.039 --> 00:04:17.439
Like, does that exist in Silicon Valley?

00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:19.680
Can that exist in Silicon Valley?

00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:28.720
You know, we've wrestled this question, and what if the secret to the life we've always wanted, you've always wanted, isn't in trying harder, but trying softer.

00:04:29.040 --> 00:04:31.360
And Jesus' great invitation.

00:04:32.079 --> 00:04:34.560
Come, come to me.

00:04:35.279 --> 00:04:36.480
Are you weary?

00:04:36.720 --> 00:04:38.000
Are you burdened?

00:04:38.160 --> 00:04:41.519
I'll give you rest or literally refreshing.

00:04:41.600 --> 00:04:45.120
Like I want to refresh you, the refreshing way of life.

00:04:45.439 --> 00:04:49.360
Take my yoke upon you, learn from me.

00:04:49.519 --> 00:04:51.759
Watch how I do life.

00:04:52.000 --> 00:05:01.600
And if you watch how I do life and you learn from me, not just my teachings, yes, and how I go about life, you'll actually enter into rest.

00:05:01.759 --> 00:05:02.079
Why?

00:05:02.240 --> 00:05:05.279
Because I'm gentle and humble of heart.

00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:11.439
And so, how do we begin to take on the easy yoke?

00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:16.240
His gentle and humble of heart.

00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:18.639
And here's what we've done the last two weeks.

00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:27.120
We made the shift of not just looking at what Jesus teaches, which is amazing, but actually beginning to look at how he lived.

00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:30.639
He said, Watch how I go about life.

00:05:30.800 --> 00:05:41.920
And in watching the pattern and the pace that Jesus goes about life, then begins to tell us, inform us, and teach us of this is the refreshing way of life.

00:05:42.079 --> 00:05:55.600
And could it be, could it be the things that we've taken, the yokes or the stuff that is hanging around our necks, the patterns that we've embraced, man, they'll never bring the life we desire.

00:05:56.639 --> 00:05:58.319
We'll never be able to answer that question.

00:05:58.480 --> 00:05:59.439
Are you enjoying life?

00:05:59.519 --> 00:06:02.800
Well, at times, at moments, but not consistently, no.

00:06:03.920 --> 00:06:06.079
Last week we looked at the lonely places.

00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:09.040
He often withdrew to the lonely places.

00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:19.600
Today we want to look at one rhythm of Jesus' life that is so countercultural even in Christianity.

00:06:19.759 --> 00:06:27.040
And it's really countercultural in um Western American evangelical Christianity.

00:06:27.199 --> 00:06:28.879
It almost became taboo.

00:06:28.959 --> 00:06:36.000
Like I grew up, and this was like one of those things where, hey, no, that's no longer for us.

00:06:36.079 --> 00:06:38.399
That's an old testament thing, right?

00:06:38.639 --> 00:06:40.720
That that's like an old school thing.

00:06:40.879 --> 00:06:42.800
We're in the new school, the new testament.

00:06:42.879 --> 00:06:45.920
You don't have to worry about that anymore.

00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:53.920
And I think because we've gotten away from it, we are now caught in a rhythm that our souls cannot sustain.

00:06:56.079 --> 00:06:58.160
Jesus did something every single week.

00:06:58.240 --> 00:06:59.279
Did you know this?

00:06:59.680 --> 00:07:01.040
Without fail.

00:07:01.920 --> 00:07:14.079
He participated in something that actually finds its roots all the way back in the origins of creation, and that the Jewish people had been doing for thousands of years.

00:07:15.120 --> 00:07:16.079
His rhythm.

00:07:16.639 --> 00:07:20.639
And he would say, This is a new way to carry life.

00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:22.879
His rhythm was Shabbat.

00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:24.319
Would you go ahead and say that with me?

00:07:24.800 --> 00:07:25.439
Shabbat.

00:07:25.600 --> 00:07:25.759
Yeah.

00:07:26.079 --> 00:07:27.279
Isn't that fun to say?

00:07:27.600 --> 00:07:28.399
Shabbat.

00:07:28.639 --> 00:07:29.839
You're like, oh, that's nice.

00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:31.279
That's lovely, Ryan.

00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:34.560
Most of us know it as Sabbath, right?

00:07:34.959 --> 00:07:38.959
Uh Sabbath or Shabbat is the Hebrew way of saying it.

00:07:39.199 --> 00:07:39.839
Shabbat.

00:07:39.920 --> 00:07:46.560
This is a rhythm that Jesus embraced every single week.

00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:48.079
He Shabbat.

00:07:49.040 --> 00:08:01.920
Now, here's what's interesting: is in Jesus' day, the reason we think, you know, modernly that, hey, maybe that's not for us, is Jesus went against the grain of the religious leaders.

00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:03.040
We know that, yeah?

00:08:03.279 --> 00:08:11.360
And if you read the Gospels, what you'll find is Jesus actually did a lot of things on Sabbath that the religious leaders didn't like.

00:08:11.600 --> 00:08:30.000
Now, by the time Shabbat or Sabbath got to Jesus' day, religious leaders had taken the commands of Scripture, and then they added lots of other different commands to make sure that you observed it properly, that you didn't miss it in any way.

00:08:30.160 --> 00:08:33.600
And so they would add upon it all these different layers.

00:08:33.840 --> 00:08:45.200
So by the time Jesus shows up onto the scene, Sabbath, which was incredibly uh powerful and beautiful, became this burden.

00:08:46.240 --> 00:08:48.639
It became a downer.

00:08:49.039 --> 00:09:04.960
In fact, uh I want to take you to Jesus' um most instructive teaching on Sabbath, and it's his only teaching about Sabbath, really, and it's sandwiched between two different times where he, you know, uh bucks up against the religious elite.

00:09:05.039 --> 00:09:18.799
And it begins with a story where Jesus and his disciples on Sabbath are walking uh through grain fields and they take some of the kernels and they begin to eat the kernels, and the Pharisees see this and they're like, hey, you know what?

00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:21.759
In the law, it tells us you you're not allowed to reap.

00:09:21.840 --> 00:09:25.600
And I know they just took a little bit of it, but technically that's a reaping.

00:09:26.879 --> 00:09:27.519
Right?

00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:49.519
And then Jesus has this line, he teaches us about Sabbath, and then right after that, he then is on another Sabbath, he's he's in the synagogue, as was his habit, and he sees a man with a shriveled up, withered hand, and he gets up and asks, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?

00:09:50.240 --> 00:09:52.480
And it's crickets, it's silence.

00:09:52.559 --> 00:10:08.399
And if you read different, you know, versions of different different gospels that all give the same account, at one point you'll see that Jesus becomes indignant, he becomes angry because the very heart and the intent of Sabbath was ripped out of it for rules.

00:10:12.480 --> 00:10:16.159
And he says to the man, stretch out his hand, and he was healed.

00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:37.679
And here is Jesus' teaching right between these two Sabbath stories, and what he has to say to inform for us the rhythm, the yoke, a new way to carry life.

00:10:37.840 --> 00:10:41.360
He says, the Sabbath, or Shabbat, was made for man.

00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:42.399
Who was it made for?

00:10:42.559 --> 00:10:43.120
Help me out.

00:10:43.919 --> 00:10:47.679
It was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

00:10:48.000 --> 00:10:50.960
So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.

00:10:51.279 --> 00:10:58.159
The Sabbath, hello, Shabbat, this day of rest was made for you and your good and your well-being.

00:10:58.399 --> 00:11:04.879
It wasn't made for you to come observe and somehow earn kudos for God.

00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:10.080
And we miss this all the time.

00:11:11.279 --> 00:11:17.519
See, in even those stories, did you know that Jesus healed seven different times on the Sabbath?

00:11:17.840 --> 00:11:27.039
And what we find, he says it's made for man, the Sabbath was intended to be a day of healing and wholeness, and you're missing it.

00:11:27.360 --> 00:11:39.279
See with the grain and what he's doing, that Sabbath was actually made to actually have your needs met, not withhold them for rules and regulations and obligations and restrictions.

00:11:39.679 --> 00:11:42.720
Sabbath was made for your good, for my God.

00:11:42.960 --> 00:11:43.360
My good.

00:11:43.519 --> 00:11:45.120
Well, what is Sabbath?

00:11:45.600 --> 00:11:50.799
I like how Peter Schizero in his book Emotionally Healthy Leadership, he defines it.

00:11:50.879 --> 00:12:00.720
Uh he says, Biblical Sabbath is a 24-hour block of time in which we stop work, enjoy rest, practice delight, and contemplate God.

00:12:00.799 --> 00:12:03.279
It's a 24-hour period of time.

00:12:03.519 --> 00:12:08.320
In the Jewish uh tradition, your day begins at sundown.

00:12:08.639 --> 00:12:18.080
And so it started on Friday evening, and we go till sundown on Saturday, and they would stop and they would rest and to be with God.

00:12:18.320 --> 00:12:23.039
Sabbath literally means the word means to stop, to cease.

00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:26.399
And it also means to delight.

00:12:26.720 --> 00:12:28.799
And you have both of those going on.

00:12:29.120 --> 00:12:39.039
To stop and to delight, to cease because you are a limited, finite human.

00:12:39.200 --> 00:12:47.200
You have to stop and recharge weekly, you have to have a Sabbath rest weekly and delight.

00:12:47.440 --> 00:12:49.759
It's made actually for your good for fun.

00:12:49.919 --> 00:12:53.039
And so if it's boring, you're doing it wrong.

00:12:53.679 --> 00:12:54.799
Seriously.

00:12:55.039 --> 00:13:04.799
So here's what I want to do because I think most of us aren't really familiar with this like me, and probably aren't very good at Sabbathing, like me.

00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:06.879
Let me give you the framework.

00:13:07.039 --> 00:13:09.679
Where did this come from and why does it matter?

00:13:09.759 --> 00:13:15.840
And why, actually, more now than ever, you need it, I need it in the Silicon Valley.

00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:18.159
It's a new way to carry life.

00:13:18.399 --> 00:13:19.039
Shabbat.

00:13:19.440 --> 00:13:20.480
Where did it come from?

00:13:20.639 --> 00:13:24.720
Let's go back to the very creation, the rhythm of creation.

00:13:25.039 --> 00:13:32.879
I want you just to see some things, the framing of how God designed the universe and designed us to operate within it.

00:13:33.039 --> 00:13:34.799
It goes all the way back to that.

00:13:35.039 --> 00:13:39.440
God designed the day, think about this, to begin with rest, not work.

00:13:39.759 --> 00:13:40.799
Did you get that?

00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:45.679
It's a slight shift, but in our American Western understanding, the day begins when?

00:13:46.240 --> 00:13:47.360
In the morning.

00:13:47.679 --> 00:13:48.159
Right?

00:13:48.480 --> 00:13:49.120
Sun up.

00:13:49.200 --> 00:13:50.159
Hey, the day begins.

00:13:50.240 --> 00:13:52.240
And your day begins with work.

00:13:52.480 --> 00:13:53.840
Your day begins with the task.

00:13:53.919 --> 00:13:57.919
Your day begins with the list, all the things you have to do.

00:13:58.240 --> 00:14:01.679
And it says, in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

00:14:01.759 --> 00:14:03.279
And then notice what does it say?

00:14:03.440 --> 00:14:05.919
And there was, help me up, evening.

00:14:06.240 --> 00:14:08.080
Huh, that's curious.

00:14:09.200 --> 00:14:10.240
Not morning.

00:14:10.720 --> 00:14:14.639
There was evening and there was morning the first day.

00:14:14.879 --> 00:14:18.399
And actually, this is repeated through all the days of creation.

00:14:18.559 --> 00:14:20.480
And there was evening and there is morning.

00:14:20.720 --> 00:14:26.480
And so actually, we are to work from rest, not the other way around, that the day begins.

00:14:26.559 --> 00:14:31.759
And it's just one of those things that if you and I can begin to think, it's a perspective shift.

00:14:31.840 --> 00:14:42.320
And so you realize, no, I'm actually beginning my day with rest and renewal and replenishment and filling up before I ever go out.

00:14:43.360 --> 00:14:45.279
Rest begins the new day.

00:14:45.440 --> 00:14:50.320
Secondly, you want to see under here, actually, God created humanity as co-workers with him.

00:14:57.200 --> 00:14:58.960
In the image of God, he created them.

00:14:59.200 --> 00:15:00.879
Male and female, he created them.

00:15:01.039 --> 00:15:03.840
You've been made in the Imago Dei, the image of God.

00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:09.600
Your reflection of him, your maleness and femaleness all have an integral part of that.

00:15:09.759 --> 00:15:13.120
And then he goes on to say, God bless them.

00:15:13.279 --> 00:15:16.879
And he said to them, Be fruitful and increase in number.

00:15:17.440 --> 00:15:20.480
Translation, get busy with it and have a lot of fun doing it.

00:15:20.960 --> 00:15:21.600
Right?

00:15:22.080 --> 00:15:25.039
Seriously, this is this is right here.

00:15:25.919 --> 00:15:33.759
Fill the earth and subdue it, then rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.

00:15:34.080 --> 00:15:38.080
God actually created you to do good work.

00:15:39.039 --> 00:15:45.279
See, we kind of think of work either as two things: work as a necessary evil, or work is everything.

00:15:45.360 --> 00:15:46.720
It's your identity.

00:15:47.600 --> 00:15:49.360
And he's like, no, no, no.

00:15:49.840 --> 00:15:50.720
You've been created.

00:15:50.879 --> 00:15:55.759
There's work in the garden before the fall, and there'll actually be work in heaven, by the way.

00:15:55.840 --> 00:16:01.360
You're gonna have good, meaningful work to put your hands to, to put your minds to.

00:16:02.639 --> 00:16:06.879
See, he created you to be a co-worker with him.

00:16:07.360 --> 00:16:11.200
You know, and sometimes I think there's some myths about work that we buy into.

00:16:11.360 --> 00:16:13.919
One is that there's secular and sacred work, right?

00:16:14.080 --> 00:16:18.559
Ryan, I work at Apple, I work at Google, I work at Beats, I work at wherever.

00:16:18.720 --> 00:16:20.240
And that's secular work.

00:16:20.320 --> 00:16:24.320
And then, you know, it's nice when you pastors, you do the sacred work.

00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:27.200
That is not a paradigm in scripture, by the way.

00:16:27.519 --> 00:16:30.960
All honest work is sacred work.

00:16:31.440 --> 00:16:33.759
Like what you're doing is sacred.

00:16:33.919 --> 00:16:40.480
The primary place of discipleship is the workplace, it's where you spend the most amount of time.

00:16:41.440 --> 00:16:43.279
Like what you do matters.

00:16:43.440 --> 00:16:45.200
How you do it matters.

00:16:45.840 --> 00:16:50.320
Paul would say, and whatever you do, whether word indeed, do it all into the name of the Lord Jesus.

00:16:50.399 --> 00:16:56.320
Like, I'm gonna do this work in the name of the Lord Jesus because it's sacred and it's meaningful.

00:16:56.559 --> 00:17:03.360
I think uh the other thing, myth that we kind of buy into is that it's only uh only paid work counts as work, right?

00:17:03.759 --> 00:17:05.519
Nothing could be further from the truth.

00:17:05.599 --> 00:17:09.440
There's lots of unpaid work that is real work and really meaningful.

00:17:09.599 --> 00:17:12.160
And we've seen even pendulum swings here, right?

00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:22.319
And I I think back in the 80s and 90s, like if you were a stay-at-home parent or mom, like um if you went to work, it was looked down upon.

00:17:22.559 --> 00:17:27.599
And then now today the pendulum is swung is like if you stay at home, it's looked down upon.

00:17:27.920 --> 00:17:34.640
All work is beautiful, uh, that is honest, and it's like you're created to be co-workers with them.

00:17:34.799 --> 00:17:39.920
Finally, God set boundaries to work for our good.

00:17:40.559 --> 00:17:41.440
He set boundaries.

00:17:41.759 --> 00:17:42.640
Notice what he says.

00:17:42.880 --> 00:17:47.519
But by the seventh day, God had finished the work he had been doing.

00:17:47.680 --> 00:17:50.559
So on the seventh day, he rested.

00:17:50.799 --> 00:17:52.079
He s Shabbat.

00:17:52.720 --> 00:17:57.680
He Shabbat ceased to be still from all his work.

00:17:58.000 --> 00:18:02.480
Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, literally set it apart.

00:18:02.559 --> 00:18:05.680
This is where the idea, you know where the word holiday comes from?

00:18:05.920 --> 00:18:07.359
Holiday, we get this, you know this.

00:18:07.599 --> 00:18:08.720
I'm not telling you anything new.

00:18:08.799 --> 00:18:09.759
It's holy day.

00:18:09.839 --> 00:18:11.279
It's a set apart day.

00:18:11.440 --> 00:18:20.720
It started all the way back here, a holy day, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

00:18:21.039 --> 00:18:23.440
God set boundaries.

00:18:24.160 --> 00:18:27.839
Now, we don't like boundaries, do we?

00:18:28.799 --> 00:18:31.039
We don't like limits, do we?

00:18:31.680 --> 00:18:38.319
I think that's one of the reasons we don't embrace a Shabbat, a Sabbath, is like, don't tell me what to do, don't tell me what I need.

00:18:38.400 --> 00:18:40.559
I'm good, I can do it, I'm capable.

00:18:42.000 --> 00:18:42.640
Right?

00:18:43.279 --> 00:18:45.599
Isn't that kind of like our Silicon Valley?

00:18:45.680 --> 00:18:48.160
Like, yeah, no, man, I got it.

00:18:48.480 --> 00:18:49.519
Just back off.

00:18:49.759 --> 00:18:51.119
I can handle this.

00:18:51.839 --> 00:18:53.200
Here's what's interesting, right?

00:18:53.359 --> 00:19:04.880
If you're driving on this really um precarious mountainous road and there's a cliff, and you see the guardrails, you're never like I can't believe they put those there.

00:19:08.799 --> 00:19:10.640
What were they thinking?

00:19:11.359 --> 00:19:12.240
Seriously?

00:19:12.559 --> 00:19:13.759
All the way up?

00:19:15.440 --> 00:19:15.839
Right?

00:19:16.079 --> 00:19:18.400
You you just don't you just don't think that.

00:19:18.960 --> 00:19:23.039
In fact, those guardrails, if you're like me, you're like, oh, thank God.

00:19:23.839 --> 00:19:24.319
Right?

00:19:24.559 --> 00:19:38.640
Because when they're not there, you've been there, I've been there, you're not there, you're like white, knocking it, gripping it, your knees, okay, my knees are shaking, and you're going up it because you recognize those guardrails aren't in place to keep you from fun, but they're there to keep you from harm.

00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:47.839
And God puts a boundary on our days, on our weeks, knowing left to ourselves, we will run ourselves into the ground.

00:19:48.000 --> 00:19:57.759
He didn't cease to work because he was tired, he ceased for our good and set a boundary to say, you are my image bearer.

00:19:59.759 --> 00:20:04.000
And you actually get to reflect me by resting in the work that I finished.

00:20:06.240 --> 00:20:10.720
And I put this boundary here, a Shabbat for space.

00:20:10.880 --> 00:20:11.119
Why?

00:20:11.279 --> 00:20:22.160
Because we are finite, limited beings that need daily renewal, and we actually need a weekly Sabbath rest.

00:20:22.559 --> 00:20:33.680
This goes all the way back to the framing of the fabric of the universe, like how God designed it, and you've heard it said, like if when you go against the grain of the universe, you what?

00:20:33.920 --> 00:20:35.759
You get splinters, yeah.

00:20:36.160 --> 00:20:37.680
I guess you hadn't heard that one.

00:20:39.279 --> 00:20:48.720
And then fast forward, and you see God setting up a new people, a new nation, drawing them out uh from bondage in Egypt.

00:20:48.799 --> 00:21:03.359
And so Israel had been down in Egypt for 400 years, they had been slaves, they had been commodities at this hands of the empire, and they were only as good as what they could do.

00:21:04.000 --> 00:21:20.640
And God pulls them out and he says, I want to give you a new way of being in a land as you step in, and he uh gives them the Ten Commandments, and here we see Shabbat again, and we see him framing, and it's powerful and it's beautiful.

00:21:20.799 --> 00:21:24.559
And the very first time, and we he gives the Ten Commandments, by the way, twice.

00:21:24.640 --> 00:21:25.920
We'll talk about that in a second.

00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:32.319
Uh, the very first time Moses gives the Ten Commandments, he's with the people, Mount Sinai, smoke, thunder.

00:21:32.400 --> 00:21:33.119
I mean, it's amazing.

00:21:33.200 --> 00:21:35.839
It's a it's a light show, it's pretty intense and awesome.

00:21:36.000 --> 00:21:52.240
And he comes down, and these people had just been uh pulled out of slavery, rescued, and now they're in the wilderness in the barren land, and God gives them these ten commandments that we all go, yay, you know what?

00:21:52.640 --> 00:21:55.200
Sounds like a pretty good idea not to murder anyone.

00:21:55.599 --> 00:21:56.880
I like that one.

00:21:57.759 --> 00:21:59.759
And coveting, yeah, it's probably not so good.

00:22:00.319 --> 00:22:00.880
Stealing?

00:22:00.960 --> 00:22:02.319
Yeah, gotcha.

00:22:02.880 --> 00:22:09.039
And he he institutes, thinks about this, as one of the core ones, institutes Sabbath.

00:22:10.319 --> 00:22:14.799
As one of the core framings for how they would go about life.

00:22:14.960 --> 00:22:19.680
And he says, remember, remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

00:22:19.839 --> 00:22:21.279
Remember, don't forget it.

00:22:21.519 --> 00:22:23.920
Because we're forgetful beings, aren't we?

00:22:24.240 --> 00:22:25.920
Remember the Sabbath day.

00:22:26.079 --> 00:22:29.599
And then he he gives them the why, if you want to go read it on your own.

00:22:29.759 --> 00:22:33.839
He gives them the why and it connects it back to what we just talked about the creation.

00:22:33.920 --> 00:22:36.880
Like this is how God framed the universe.

00:22:37.440 --> 00:22:42.799
Like you're just operating in the rhythm of how God designed life to work.

00:22:42.960 --> 00:22:46.319
Remember the Sabbath day, keep it holy.

00:22:46.480 --> 00:22:47.440
Now think about this.

00:22:47.599 --> 00:22:49.839
They had just left Egypt.

00:22:50.319 --> 00:22:52.799
They're now in the wilderness.

00:22:53.279 --> 00:22:55.599
Resources are scarce.

00:22:56.160 --> 00:22:57.680
And he's saying, you know what?

00:22:57.920 --> 00:22:59.279
Take a day off.

00:23:00.640 --> 00:23:02.480
Well, wait, wait, wait, wait a second.

00:23:02.640 --> 00:23:02.960
Okay.

00:23:06.240 --> 00:23:06.880
Really?

00:23:08.160 --> 00:23:13.279
Because I know you said this manna thing's gonna be happening, and manna is literally the what is it?

00:23:13.359 --> 00:23:13.839
That's what it means.

00:23:13.920 --> 00:23:17.759
They're like, we don't know what it is, but we're gonna eat it, and it's not bad, right?

00:23:17.920 --> 00:23:28.400
And but but take a day off when we look around, resources are scarce, we're we're we're we're on a journey, we're traveling, I we can't afford to take a day off.

00:23:29.359 --> 00:23:32.960
See, Sabbath keeping is actually an act of faith.

00:23:33.359 --> 00:23:38.480
An act of faith that, man, I actually trust God to work when I'm not working.

00:23:38.960 --> 00:23:41.039
I trust God to provide.

00:23:42.240 --> 00:23:43.839
See, our concern, isn't it?

00:23:43.920 --> 00:23:51.279
Like even just thinking about Sabbath is like, okay, a 24-hour period of rest, Ryan, that's not how the valley works.

00:23:52.160 --> 00:23:53.839
I'll fall behind.

00:23:54.720 --> 00:23:56.960
Someone else will get ahead.

00:23:58.079 --> 00:24:04.079
And it's this act of faith where you say it's a statement that we're not God.

00:24:04.880 --> 00:24:06.799
You are, and you're in control.

00:24:06.960 --> 00:24:15.279
And if you rested and we're gonna rest and you're finished work, hey, we're gonna be at rest, trusting you will take care of it.

00:24:15.759 --> 00:24:16.960
And I like how A.J.

00:24:17.200 --> 00:24:25.119
Uh Swoboda, uh, in his book on Sabbath, a great scholar up in the Portland area, uh, writes about Sabbath.

00:24:25.279 --> 00:24:38.240
He says, Sabbath dethrones humanity from its self-aggrandized place of lordship over creation by handing authority of the world back to the one to whom it already belongs.

00:24:39.200 --> 00:24:40.319
God, you're in control.

00:24:42.559 --> 00:24:43.759
You know the future.

00:24:45.279 --> 00:24:49.759
And you're inviting me, no, you're calling me, you're beckoning me into a rest.

00:24:50.079 --> 00:24:56.000
And I believe I'm too important, too essential, too indispensable to stop.

00:24:57.440 --> 00:24:58.640
It's an act of faith.

00:24:58.799 --> 00:24:59.839
I trust you.

00:25:00.799 --> 00:25:08.000
The other thing that we see with Sabbath is not just an act of faith, it's actually an act of resistance.

00:25:08.640 --> 00:25:10.160
An act of resistance.

00:25:10.319 --> 00:25:12.559
I get that line from Walter Brugeman.

00:25:12.720 --> 00:25:14.880
He wrote this great book, Sabbath as resistance.

00:25:15.119 --> 00:25:17.599
Say no to a culture of now.

00:25:18.640 --> 00:25:29.119
In it, he writes that Sabbath as resistance declares our lives are not defined by uh production and consumption of the commodity goods.

00:25:29.759 --> 00:25:34.240
It's this resistance to the demand and the gods of this age.

00:25:34.480 --> 00:25:38.799
Now, I told you Moses gives the Ten Commandments twice.

00:25:38.880 --> 00:25:41.839
He gives it in Exodus, and then he gives it in Deuteronomy.

00:25:41.920 --> 00:25:46.880
And Deuteronomy literally means second law, duatuonomy law, second law.

00:25:47.039 --> 00:25:48.960
Well, why did he give the law twice?

00:25:49.119 --> 00:26:06.559
Well, he gave it at Mount Sinide, and then he fast forward 40 years later, they've been watering around a brand new generation who was too young to remember really the days in Egypt as being slaves, and or were born in their wandering period.

00:26:06.640 --> 00:26:10.240
And he gives the Sabbath, but he changes the why a little bit.

00:26:10.319 --> 00:26:12.400
It's really fascinating, it's really interesting.

00:26:12.559 --> 00:26:14.640
Notice what he says when he changes it.

00:26:14.880 --> 00:26:22.480
He writes this he says, Therefore, uh observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy as the Lord your God has commanded you.

00:26:22.559 --> 00:26:23.839
Okay, so we're to observe this.

00:26:24.000 --> 00:26:28.319
Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

00:26:28.480 --> 00:26:29.920
Now notice this, remember.

00:26:30.640 --> 00:26:32.319
He said, Remember the Sabbath.

00:26:32.400 --> 00:26:34.960
Now he wants them to remember something else.

00:26:35.279 --> 00:26:43.039
Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.

00:26:43.200 --> 00:26:46.559
Therefore, the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath.

00:26:46.880 --> 00:26:55.440
Remember, it's connected to how God has designed the framing of the universe, but remember where you once been and where your people came from.

00:26:55.759 --> 00:26:58.079
Remember that you never got a day off.

00:26:58.880 --> 00:27:09.279
Remember that you toiled at the hands of the empire, and that you were just a commodity for the gods of their land.

00:27:10.000 --> 00:27:14.160
I am not a god like that.

00:27:16.720 --> 00:27:17.519
Remember.

00:27:23.359 --> 00:27:27.759
The gods of success, the gods of upward mobility, the gods of keeping up with the Joneses.

00:27:28.000 --> 00:27:29.920
Who are the Joneses, by the way?

00:27:30.799 --> 00:27:32.240
They seem awful.

00:27:32.559 --> 00:27:34.319
If your last name is Jones, I'm sorry.

00:27:34.400 --> 00:27:36.160
I just I apologize.

00:27:37.119 --> 00:27:38.720
But we do this.

00:27:41.440 --> 00:27:46.480
Insistently striving and never arriving.

00:27:48.319 --> 00:27:50.240
Consistently exhausted.

00:27:51.599 --> 00:27:52.240
For what?

00:27:53.359 --> 00:27:55.279
Only to get pulled back to Egypt.

00:27:56.640 --> 00:28:00.640
So Sabbath keeping is an act of resistance.

00:28:01.519 --> 00:28:12.799
Author Tim Keller says it this way: anyone who cannot obey God's command to observe the Sabbath is a slave, even a self-imposed one.

00:28:13.279 --> 00:28:26.720
Your own heart or our materialistic culture or an exploitive organization or all of the above will be abusing you if you do not have the ability to be disciplined in your practice of Sabbath.

00:28:26.960 --> 00:28:30.400
Sabbath is therefore a declaration of freedom.

00:28:30.799 --> 00:28:33.279
Some of you need to declare freedom.

00:28:33.519 --> 00:28:34.960
And I'm gonna tell you how to do that.

00:28:35.039 --> 00:28:38.000
I'm gonna give us really a beginner's guide to Sabbath.

00:28:38.160 --> 00:28:41.920
And you're like, Ryan, my work won't let me do that.

00:28:42.079 --> 00:28:43.839
It's 24-7 right here.

00:28:43.920 --> 00:28:45.920
I gotta respond to emails, by the way.

00:28:47.039 --> 00:28:50.480
Not within 24 hours, within 24 minutes.

00:28:50.799 --> 00:28:52.240
Even that's long.

00:28:53.119 --> 00:28:55.279
Just tell your boss you're Sabbathing.

00:28:57.200 --> 00:28:59.200
It actually works, by the way.

00:28:59.920 --> 00:29:01.359
A day off is a different thing.

00:29:01.599 --> 00:29:03.920
Sabbath, it's a holy thing.

00:29:04.480 --> 00:29:05.519
Well, how do we do this?

00:29:05.599 --> 00:29:08.160
Let me give you a beginner's guide for Sabbathing.

00:29:08.319 --> 00:29:11.359
First, would you start small but start now?

00:29:11.680 --> 00:29:13.440
Start small, but start now.

00:29:13.599 --> 00:29:15.599
Uh 24 hours might feel like a lot.

00:29:15.759 --> 00:29:20.880
It might even be impossible with your current pace of what you're going through in life.

00:29:21.200 --> 00:29:23.279
Okay, start small.

00:29:23.599 --> 00:29:24.720
What about four hours?

00:29:24.799 --> 00:29:26.640
Can you Sabbath for four hours?

00:29:27.119 --> 00:29:28.079
Could you?

00:29:28.799 --> 00:29:29.680
Why not?

00:29:29.920 --> 00:29:31.039
What about eight?

00:29:31.279 --> 00:29:32.799
Could you Sabbath for eight hours?

00:29:32.880 --> 00:29:38.160
Could you just say, okay, this block, eight-hour chunk, like you put it on your calendar, it's designated.

00:29:38.559 --> 00:29:42.319
You know, it's what about 12 hours?

00:29:42.640 --> 00:29:45.759
See, start small, but start now.

00:29:45.920 --> 00:29:51.039
And some of us, even that whole idea of a weekly rhythm of stopping, we're like, no, we we're not gonna do that.

00:29:51.200 --> 00:29:52.160
I don't need that.

00:29:52.319 --> 00:29:53.839
I'm just built different, right?

00:29:54.720 --> 00:29:56.079
I'm type A.

00:29:57.839 --> 00:29:59.119
I'm strong.

00:30:00.079 --> 00:30:02.000
I got lots of energy.

00:30:02.400 --> 00:30:18.960
You know, I did a triathlon a while back, and um, as I was training for it and learning about how to do triathlons, here's what was fascinating is when you're doing any of these distant marathons, um, they don't tell you you should drink when you're thirsty.

00:30:19.599 --> 00:30:22.960
And they don't tell you you should eat when you're tired.

00:30:23.279 --> 00:30:35.200
In fact, what they say, and the training is, is there's a certain amount of time you should be taking fluids consistently, and then you also need to be getting your electrolytes in these little goopacks, which are nasty.

00:30:35.519 --> 00:30:37.759
But I'm told they're good for you.

00:30:38.480 --> 00:30:43.599
And I'm told you do it even if you don't feel like you need it.

00:30:43.920 --> 00:30:44.559
Why?

00:30:45.759 --> 00:30:49.359
Because if you wait until you do, it's too late.

00:30:51.039 --> 00:30:56.079
Friends, when you wait until you feel like you need a rest, it's too late.

00:30:57.680 --> 00:30:59.279
It's just too late.

00:30:59.599 --> 00:31:11.519
That's why we live these lives and we're wondering why our souls are in dissonance with everything around us, and we just keep going, and we're in that depleted state where I was, where finally you like just to stop.

00:31:11.599 --> 00:31:15.680
You're like, I don't even like it anymore because I don't like here.

00:31:17.839 --> 00:31:19.920
Start small, but start now.

00:31:20.000 --> 00:31:23.759
Let me just give you four words to guide Sabbath, okay, Shabbat.

00:31:24.079 --> 00:31:25.920
Stop, rest, delight, worship.

00:31:26.160 --> 00:31:28.319
Stop, rest, delight, worship.

00:31:28.480 --> 00:31:29.519
It's that simple.

00:31:29.759 --> 00:31:33.039
And by the way, I know we have like high schoolers in here.

00:31:33.279 --> 00:31:35.519
High school, you should love Sabbath.

00:31:35.680 --> 00:31:37.279
You go, like, hey, um, stop.

00:31:37.680 --> 00:31:38.880
Listen to this, okay?

00:31:39.119 --> 00:31:42.960
Write down on Sabbath, I will not make a list.

00:31:43.119 --> 00:31:44.880
On Sabbath, I will not.

00:31:45.039 --> 00:31:47.920
And high schoolers, I will not do homework.

00:31:48.400 --> 00:31:50.000
Mom, I'm shabbating.

00:31:52.319 --> 00:31:52.960
Right?

00:31:54.480 --> 00:31:57.200
All the parents just got mad at me right there.

00:31:58.000 --> 00:32:00.240
I got three teenagers, all right?

00:32:01.200 --> 00:32:03.759
There's six days to homework.

00:32:05.920 --> 00:32:07.759
I will not do emails.

00:32:09.119 --> 00:32:11.359
I will not go on social media.

00:32:12.400 --> 00:32:13.359
I will not.

00:32:13.759 --> 00:32:15.759
See, Sabbath means to stop.

00:32:16.559 --> 00:32:17.680
What are you gonna stop?

00:32:17.839 --> 00:32:19.119
What are you gonna put down?

00:32:19.440 --> 00:32:21.680
What are you gonna rest for a season?

00:32:21.920 --> 00:32:22.559
To stop.

00:32:23.519 --> 00:32:24.640
Then rest.

00:32:25.359 --> 00:32:27.039
Now let me define rest.

00:32:27.680 --> 00:32:34.079
Resting is engaging in um activities that restore and replenish you.

00:32:34.400 --> 00:32:38.079
Resting is engaging in activities that restore and replenish you.

00:32:38.160 --> 00:32:40.000
For some, it is a nap, okay?

00:32:40.240 --> 00:32:41.440
I'm not a big napper.

00:32:41.519 --> 00:32:43.200
I took a couple yesterday.

00:32:43.279 --> 00:32:44.640
I just kind of tired.

00:32:44.720 --> 00:32:48.160
I was slept through a movie, which is typical.

00:32:50.160 --> 00:32:52.720
It doesn't necessarily mean take a nap, though.

00:32:53.039 --> 00:32:55.519
What are activities that restore and replenish you?

00:32:55.599 --> 00:33:00.400
So if stop on Sabbath, I will not, fill that in, make a list, rest.

00:33:00.720 --> 00:33:02.000
On Sabbath, I will.

00:33:02.160 --> 00:33:04.880
What are activities that restore and replenish you?

00:33:05.359 --> 00:33:05.680
Okay?

00:33:06.240 --> 00:33:10.480
Uh I've heard it said that if you work with your mind, you often rest or play with your hands.

00:33:10.640 --> 00:33:13.519
If you work with your hands, you often rest or play with your mind.

00:33:13.680 --> 00:33:19.519
And so if you're behind a computer screen the entire time, you probably need to rest with your hands in some capacity.

00:33:19.680 --> 00:33:21.359
It restores and replenishes you.

00:33:21.440 --> 00:33:25.680
If you're working at a job that's really physical, you probably rest with your mind.

00:33:25.759 --> 00:33:28.960
It might be a book, it might be a crosswords puzzle, it might be a game.

00:33:29.119 --> 00:33:32.559
What are some of those things as you think on Sabbath I will?

00:33:32.720 --> 00:33:34.799
And you begin to go and carve out time.

00:33:35.039 --> 00:33:36.240
These is the place.

00:33:36.480 --> 00:33:37.279
Guilt-free.

00:33:37.440 --> 00:33:38.480
Had you ever think about this?

00:33:38.559 --> 00:33:40.799
Why did God have to command the Sabbath?

00:33:42.000 --> 00:33:46.000
Because we needed it, and we need not feel guilty about it.

00:33:46.240 --> 00:33:49.680
And for some of you, you feel so guilty about stopping.

00:33:50.640 --> 00:33:54.400
And now I'm guilty, and you forgive feeling guilty about stopping.

00:33:54.720 --> 00:33:57.119
I'm sorry, I wasn't meaning to do that.

00:33:58.079 --> 00:33:59.119
Breathe.

00:34:00.079 --> 00:34:00.720
Stop.

00:34:01.039 --> 00:34:01.519
Rest.

00:34:01.599 --> 00:34:02.880
And then delight.

00:34:03.039 --> 00:34:06.720
You can write fun if you want fun instead of delight.

00:34:07.279 --> 00:34:10.639
Make a list of things that bring delight.

00:34:12.960 --> 00:34:20.960
I remember in that conversation with the combers, Phil asking me, What brings you delight?

00:34:21.119 --> 00:34:22.320
What brings you joy?

00:34:23.119 --> 00:34:24.800
What do you do for fun?

00:34:26.400 --> 00:34:30.639
And had gotten so far away from it, I couldn't answer it.

00:34:30.880 --> 00:34:39.679
You know, one other mentor gave me just kind of this like um kind of gauge on the dashboard of your life to know how how your soul's doing.

00:34:39.840 --> 00:34:42.320
And I think this would be helpful for you as well.

00:34:42.559 --> 00:34:46.559
And he's like, you know, the warning sign, just to like pay attention.

00:34:46.719 --> 00:34:51.760
He's like, you know, the warning sign is when I care too much about things I shouldn't care about.

00:34:52.000 --> 00:34:58.159
So for me, if I care too much about sports or the warriors winning, which that's not happening.

00:34:59.039 --> 00:34:59.840
Never lose soul.

00:35:00.079 --> 00:35:00.320
Yeah.

00:35:01.280 --> 00:35:02.400
It's tough, brother.

00:35:02.559 --> 00:35:14.559
Um and when I don't care about things I should care about, when things that really matter, relationships and Jesus and uh character and those sort of things.

00:35:14.639 --> 00:35:20.000
There's this light on the dashboard to go, okay, man, I need to do some soul work.

00:35:20.320 --> 00:35:27.119
And and when you can't identify, when we struggle to identify delight and fun and joy, what are the things that you really enjoy?

00:35:27.199 --> 00:35:29.519
It might be being in his creation.

00:35:29.599 --> 00:35:36.880
It's often Shabbat always involved a really good meal, often with a nice bottle of wine.

00:35:37.119 --> 00:35:40.079
The Jewish tradition, by the way, for married had a lot of sex in it.

00:35:40.159 --> 00:35:40.960
I just gonna say that.

00:35:41.039 --> 00:35:42.000
I'm just gonna delight.

00:35:42.239 --> 00:35:46.800
So there's no fuddy duddy in there and games.

00:35:47.679 --> 00:35:50.800
Stop, rest, delight, worship.

00:35:51.039 --> 00:35:55.119
Contemplate and center your hearts and minds on the goodness of God.

00:35:55.360 --> 00:35:57.679
Like this is all in the atmosphere of God.

00:35:57.760 --> 00:36:03.440
I He created this from the creation as a rhythm for us with Him.

00:36:03.519 --> 00:36:05.840
It's an act of faith, an act of resistance.

00:36:05.920 --> 00:36:16.079
And as we begin to enjoy Him and His creation and His goodness, and like this is the centered on, oh my gosh, you have provided this for me.

00:36:16.239 --> 00:36:19.760
You might have just a little bit more extended time with Him.

00:36:19.840 --> 00:36:23.760
You might just get more a little bit more quiet space, a long walk.

00:36:24.000 --> 00:36:30.719
Doing it like practicing Sabbath on a Sunday is great because you already have community and worship in the sermon.

00:36:30.880 --> 00:36:43.760
And your Sunday changes when you come prepared with it, knowing, hey, in the morning I'm preparing my heart and I have a day to rest and to play and to be in his presence and with other people, where you worship and you keep God at the center.

00:36:43.840 --> 00:36:49.039
It's not taking a day off from God, but drawing closer to him.

00:36:49.440 --> 00:36:51.840
Stay consistent then and then be creative.

00:36:52.000 --> 00:36:54.880
Stay consistent and be creative.

00:36:55.760 --> 00:36:57.199
Make it a weekly rhythm.

00:36:57.280 --> 00:37:02.639
Just put it in there, even if it's four or eight hours a week to start, and then be creative.

00:37:03.039 --> 00:37:04.159
Switch it up.

00:37:04.480 --> 00:37:08.800
If you started going to the ocean, because man, that's renewing and life-giving.

00:37:09.039 --> 00:37:12.000
Maybe you go to the city, maybe you go to the mountains.

00:37:12.320 --> 00:37:13.840
There's a lot of freedom there.

00:37:14.320 --> 00:37:20.800
Finally, what I said last week, I just wanted to repeat new seasons require new rhythms.

00:37:21.199 --> 00:37:23.760
New seasons require new rhythms.

00:37:23.840 --> 00:37:29.360
We often get into ruts in life when we try to bring in our old rhythms into a new season.

00:37:30.800 --> 00:37:39.360
And so as a college student moving into career, and you had different time, you had different capacity, and now you're moving into career.

00:37:39.440 --> 00:37:41.440
You bring in your old rhythm, you get into a rut.

00:37:43.920 --> 00:37:49.440
It happens when you shift from being single to dating to married.

00:37:49.920 --> 00:37:53.920
Oh my goodness, new rhythms when you have kids, right?

00:37:54.079 --> 00:37:56.320
And then stages of kids change.

00:37:56.719 --> 00:38:01.199
And so what that means is, you know what, what season am I in and what rhythm do I need?

00:38:01.519 --> 00:38:05.039
What season am I in and what rhythm do I need in this season?

00:38:05.199 --> 00:38:10.239
As I I know I need the rhythm of Shabbat, it might look a little different because of the age of our kids.

00:38:10.320 --> 00:38:13.039
It might look a little different because my work is ever changing.

00:38:13.199 --> 00:38:14.239
And so, you know what?

00:38:14.320 --> 00:38:18.320
I'm I'm a firefighter, so I'm four on or three on and four off.

00:38:18.480 --> 00:38:20.320
So my day may have to change.

00:38:20.480 --> 00:38:20.800
Okay.

00:38:21.199 --> 00:38:25.039
New rhythms, new season, grace.

00:38:26.960 --> 00:38:32.000
Um, I just want to leave you with a question.

00:38:32.559 --> 00:38:34.800
It was the question that Phil asked me.

00:38:36.400 --> 00:38:40.079
And it's the question I just want you to answer as we try softer.

00:38:44.320 --> 00:38:46.639
What really brings you joy and delight?

00:38:48.000 --> 00:38:49.599
What do you do for fun?

00:38:52.239 --> 00:38:58.480
What is refreshing and replenishing to you?

00:39:00.400 --> 00:39:03.360
That's your homework this week.

00:39:04.559 --> 00:39:05.599
What is it?

00:39:07.039 --> 00:39:13.119
His son John Mark wrote a book called The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, and he asked a similar question.

00:39:13.280 --> 00:39:15.280
I'll leave this one with you.

00:39:16.559 --> 00:39:24.960
What could you do for 24 hours that would fill your soul with deep, throbbing joy?

00:39:27.360 --> 00:39:28.480
Isn't that good?

00:39:31.039 --> 00:39:33.199
That's the God that you serve.

00:39:33.679 --> 00:39:35.920
That's the God who beckons you.

00:39:36.639 --> 00:39:40.239
Get out of the rat race, the hurry, the pressure, the pace.

00:39:40.559 --> 00:39:46.480
What could you do for 24 hours that would fill your soul with deep throbbing joy?

00:39:46.639 --> 00:39:54.320
Would you take time, write it down, and would you enter the rhythms of grace, the rhythms of Jesus?

00:39:56.079 --> 00:39:58.559
God, I just pray for my friends.

00:39:58.960 --> 00:40:04.000
This is so counterintuitive and counter-cultural to the world we live in.

00:40:04.639 --> 00:40:07.199
Would you give them grace?

00:40:08.079 --> 00:40:11.199
Would you give them freedom from guilt?

00:40:15.440 --> 00:40:22.559
Would you allow, as Scripture says, for them to enter into your rest, your refreshing?

00:40:26.960 --> 00:40:31.280
Thank you for your invitation, your call, your care.

00:40:37.440 --> 00:40:44.000
Would you give them the courage to carve out time every week?

00:40:45.119 --> 00:40:46.400
Jesus' name.

00:40:47.119 --> 00:40:47.599
Amen.

00:40:50.719 --> 00:40:53.039
We hope you are blessed by this message.
