describes who Jesus is and what he did speaking to a church that was bombarded by a lot of false messages. 00:00:47.600 --> 00:00:53.439 You know, Jesus is great, but you need to do this, you need to do that, you need to believe this other stuff. 00:00:53.600 --> 00:01:02.479 And they were being pulled away little by little from who Jesus actually was, the truth of the gospel, and it was destroying their lives. 00:01:02.719 --> 00:01:07.760 And before we uh jump into that, I'm gonna ask you to do something because we need a backdrop. 00:01:07.920 --> 00:01:23.040 Uh, one of the great things about um history is usually the church sort of gets it really right and goes to an extreme, and then over time it goes the other direction, and Lord willing, somehow we'll make it balanced before he gets back. 00:01:23.200 --> 00:01:24.239 But stand with me. 00:01:24.319 --> 00:01:39.200 I want to read a couple passages because what we're gonna share is um has a sense of this awesome power, majesty, authority of who Jesus is. 00:01:39.439 --> 00:01:43.760 And I think our informal world sort of works against that. 00:01:44.079 --> 00:01:50.319 So listen to first commandment we know is there should be no other gods but God. 00:01:50.480 --> 00:01:53.200 The second is don't take my name in vain. 00:01:53.920 --> 00:01:58.799 And a time happened in Israel where they were blowing it on both. 00:01:59.040 --> 00:02:03.439 And so God steps up and speaks through one of his Old Testament prophets. 00:02:03.680 --> 00:02:06.079 He says, To whom will you liken God? 00:02:06.239 --> 00:02:08.639 Or what likeness will you compare with him? 00:02:09.199 --> 00:02:17.120 As for the idol or the craftsman, he casts a gold plate, fashions it with gold or silver, they put chains around it. 00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:27.840 He's too impoverished for an offering, so he selects a tree that won't rot, seeks for himself a craftsman to prepare an idol, listen to this, that will not totter. 00:02:28.319 --> 00:02:35.439 Basically, God is saying, You've all created your idols: gold, silver, wood. 00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:37.520 Do you not know? 00:02:39.039 --> 00:02:40.319 Have you not opened the Bible for the first time when I was 18. 00:06:37.360 --> 00:06:42.560 And I uh I came to know him personally, I trusted him as my Savior, his spirit entered my life. 00:06:42.720 --> 00:06:46.800 I began to uh read the scriptures in the morning and at night. 00:06:46.959 --> 00:06:51.120 I didn't want my parents to think I'd freaked out, so I hid it under my pillow. 00:06:51.600 --> 00:06:56.000 And um I all I can tell you is I had a really, really foul mouth. 00:06:56.160 --> 00:07:00.319 I wasn't trying to quit cussing, but two weeks later, bam, it was gone. 00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:04.560 Now, other areas took a long time, but it was just bam, it was gone. 00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:08.240 And so I thought, great, I don't take the name of the Lord in vain anymore. 00:07:08.319 --> 00:07:11.439 I'm, you know, like I got one command under my belt. 00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:24.480 And uh, as I would learn a little bit later, uh taking the name of the Lord in vain isn't just about cussing, it's using his name in a way that wants to use him. 00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:40.319 In other words, um, imagine if you are a let's hypothetically say a friend or a parent, and you say to someone, and maybe they're gonna go away to college, or maybe they're going on a big trip, and you say, Hey, look, you know, if if there's an emergency, it's your trip, all the rest. purchases, and you're thinking, wait a second, these aren't emergencies. 00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:12.319 What, what, what, you just abused my name. 00:08:13.360 --> 00:08:14.879 You used me. so without going into a very long story, uh, I come to know Jesus, I go off to college, I meet a group and they're really into discipleship, I start reading the Bible, I start going to a Bible study, but I started to incorporate Jesus into my agenda. 00:08:42.320 --> 00:08:45.519 And my agenda was thank you, Jesus, for saving me. 00:08:45.600 --> 00:08:46.960 And I was very sincere. 00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:56.159 And what I really want to be is a basketball star, because I've been working at this for a really long time, and I want a really beautiful girlfriend who loves me a lot. 00:08:56.559 --> 00:09:05.360 So that's sort of so I'm gonna read my Bible and I'm gonna pray and I'm gonna be a good person, but that's what I really want. 00:09:05.679 --> 00:09:15.360 And within a couple years, you know, I had this girl that I thought I was gonna marry, and she said, I don't really want to be a disciple like you're talking about, and do anything and go anywhere. 00:09:15.679 --> 00:09:20.320 And I had to say, okay, is it Jesus or is it this girl? 00:09:20.639 --> 00:09:28.000 And I agonized and agonized, and in a in a moment I'll never forget, decided it needs to be Jesus. 00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:32.799 And I like to say the next day this wonderful girl came into my life. 00:09:33.039 --> 00:09:35.039 It was about a year or 18 months. 00:09:35.200 --> 00:09:37.519 I didn't date anyone, I was heartbroken. 00:09:38.080 --> 00:09:42.559 And I thought for sure she would be the one, and I couldn't imagine anyone better. 00:09:42.960 --> 00:09:49.919 And then the other one was the basketball side, and really it was about an idol, and the idol was me, but I just couldn't see it. 00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:57.840 So, you know, year number one, it was the first year in my college years, where as a freshman you could make the varsity, and I made the varsity, so I thought, whoa. 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:00.960 And I didn't get to play a whole lot, but I got to travel with the team. 00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:06.960 Then the next year it looked good, and then I had a stress fracture in my foot and missed half the season. 00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:16.320 And then the next year I came out of the batter's box and I was playing a couple sports, and I ripped my quad from here all the way down, and I missed most of that season. 00:10:16.639 --> 00:10:29.200 So the the theme of this story is I would work like crazy, stay at school in the summer, uh, play different leagues, and then when the season started, a major injury or catastrophe would take me out. 00:10:29.519 --> 00:10:32.480 It was like someone was thwarting my dream. 00:10:33.519 --> 00:10:36.080 And it took me a while to figure that out. 00:10:36.320 --> 00:10:41.279 And finally, my senior year, we had a big drug problem and had people selling drugs on the team. 00:10:41.360 --> 00:10:45.200 We went through five or six coaches, the whole thing blew up. 00:10:45.279 --> 00:10:58.799 I had a guy think that I said something and told on him, and it was actually another player, but he tackles me in the midst of a practice, a fight breaks out, and um God has my attention. 00:10:59.120 --> 00:11:11.039 And I realize, okay, I mean, after all these years, if I never pick up a basketball again, um I want to do life your way. 00:11:12.399 --> 00:11:13.519 I'm using you. 00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:21.360 I thought you were the means that I would get what I would want, and if I got these things, then I would be happy and satisfied. 00:11:21.519 --> 00:11:29.440 And that began the real change in my future. 00:11:30.720 --> 00:11:38.240 And this group, uh, the Colossians, it was a great church that were greatly confused. 00:11:38.320 --> 00:11:50.399 And you'll you'll notice in your notes I put there, uh, you know, when Paul describes them, he'd never met him, but one of their church members, a guy named Epaphroditus, was telling him about this church and the great things that are happening. 00:11:50.559 --> 00:11:53.120 But he says, man, they they are getting bombarded. 00:11:53.279 --> 00:11:57.279 And he describes the church, they've got great faith, they have a love for one another. 00:11:57.360 --> 00:12:00.240 Uh I'm in verses 3 through 8 of Colossians 1. 00:12:00.399 --> 00:12:07.440 Uh they they have spiritual fruit, they have great character, they're powerfully impacting the people around them, but they are bombarded. 00:12:07.600 --> 00:12:13.200 I mean bombarded by isms and people saying that Jesus isn't enough. 00:12:13.360 --> 00:12:18.240 And so then Paul appraises a uh a really powerful prayer. 00:12:18.879 --> 00:12:23.600 And as you listen to his prayer, uh think all these messages and all these people. 00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:31.519 You know, one group says is that, you know, Jesus is great, but uh you need to add uh these festivals and you need to fulfill the Jewish law. 00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:33.279 And another group goes, no, no, no, no. 00:12:33.360 --> 00:12:34.879 This is it's more new agey than that. 00:12:34.960 --> 00:12:36.240 You could worship these angels. 00:12:36.320 --> 00:12:49.120 And, you know, it was an emerging thing called Gnosticism and the body's evil, and he's there was all these levels of spirituality, and pure divinity comes, and Jesus is just one of those, and they were getting all confused. 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:55.440 And so Paul says, after giving thanks, he says, for this reason, you're such a great group of people. 00:12:55.600 --> 00:13:00.799 I'm praying that God will give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation into his will. 00:13:01.279 --> 00:13:03.360 That you would know what he really wants you to do. 00:13:03.840 --> 00:13:16.720 And then he says, Then he prays, I'll pray you'll have a real knowledge, you'll be filled with the knowledge of his will, and you'll have wisdom and understanding, that you can walk in a manner worthy of Christ, because it was beginning to take them in bad directions. going to hurt them. 00:13:24.480 --> 00:13:35.279 Finally, he prays that ultimately, out of all of this, they could persevere and they'd enjoy patience, that they would really be the kind of Christians that would follow Jesus and honor him. 00:13:35.919 --> 00:13:44.159 And what you see here, you'll notice uh after that, in chapter two, he kind of tells us here's the issues. 00:13:44.399 --> 00:13:48.399 Verse 4, verse 8, verse 16, and verse 18. 00:13:48.480 --> 00:13:50.879 I summarized them, but let me go ahead and read it. 00:13:51.120 --> 00:13:57.679 He says, I say to you, verse 4 of chapter 2, so that no one will deceive you with persuasive arguments. 00:13:58.399 --> 00:13:59.840 Anybody struggle with that? 00:14:00.080 --> 00:14:07.759 Getting a discussion someplace at work, and arguments start, and boy, they sure seem smart, and I wonder if what I believe is really true. 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:19.440 Verse 8, see to it that no one takes you by empty captive philosophy and empty deception according to human tradition, in accordance with the elementary principles of this world rather than accordance with Christ. 00:14:19.679 --> 00:14:21.360 Oh no, you shouldn't do it this way. 00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:34.080 I was just talking with someone outside, and they were talking about just even the issue of a family, and that having a family, and that the family unit just being told in certain circles, what's wrong with you? 00:14:34.240 --> 00:14:35.360 You don't need a family. 00:14:35.600 --> 00:14:38.000 Families don't matter, they aren't small, very anti-intellectual. 00:14:45.440 --> 00:14:47.039 It was happening to the Colossians. 00:14:47.200 --> 00:14:54.960 Verse 16, therefore let no one act as your judge with regard to food or drink or respect to festivals or new moons or Sabbath days. 00:14:55.600 --> 00:14:58.080 Things that are only a shadow of the things to come. 00:14:58.720 --> 00:15:13.440 This was a group of Jewish people that it's Jesus, but circumcision and these rules and these traditions, what makes you right with God is not Jesus and what he's done, but right some of us walked out of that. 00:15:14.080 --> 00:15:30.399 And then finally in verse 18, he says, See to it that no one keeps defrauding you and your prize by delighting in humility and the worship of angels, taking a stand on visions, and these people that have these amazing experiences with God. 00:15:30.480 --> 00:15:42.559 And in that day, they thought they were these eons of from pure love and pure divinity and wisdom, and they came in these various levels, and you would work your way up through the levels, and Jesus is one of the levels. 00:15:43.120 --> 00:16:00.080 In essence, the Colossians are bombarded by multiple messages and messengers seeking to shift their focus from Jesus alone to Jesus plus something or someone that's gonna really fulfill their life. 00:16:01.039 --> 00:16:05.440 And I would say we are living in a day that is so similar. 00:16:06.080 --> 00:16:12.960 I was thinking of the different Jesuses that are being reframed in our day, some of which I've certainly participated in. 00:16:13.120 --> 00:16:15.120 How about the Jesus is loved one? 00:16:15.840 --> 00:16:25.279 Love is love, if Jesus is love, it doesn't matter really what you do because he's love, and if he's love, then everything's okay. 00:16:27.360 --> 00:16:38.080 If your life is different from other people's, if it doesn't line up with what the scripture teaches, you know, a Jesus of love, there is no, maybe never a heaven, there's certainly not a hell. 00:16:38.240 --> 00:16:41.279 Jesus would never do anything to anyone who is sincere. 00:16:41.519 --> 00:16:45.120 Or the Jesus of the light, kind of the new age Jesus. 00:16:45.360 --> 00:16:58.000 I remember living in Santa Cruz for many years, and I mean lots of new agers, and we would talk, and I mean literally, I'd worship, you know, that rock or that tree, but really life it's all about the truth is inside of me. 00:16:58.080 --> 00:17:01.440 And oh, Jesus, yes, he's he's he's the ultimate light. 00:17:01.600 --> 00:17:06.000 I believe in Jesus too, or the Jesus of I love I love this one. 00:17:06.240 --> 00:17:09.039 Uh I remember a guy telling Jesus is my homeboy. 00:17:09.839 --> 00:17:12.799 Yeah, you know what, me and Jesus, we we be like this, man. 00:17:12.880 --> 00:17:25.440 You know, he's my homeboy and the man upstairs, and he's uh he's with me when I need him, and he's gonna make life work out, and or the uh the Jesus who wants to make me happy, no matter what. 00:17:25.759 --> 00:17:36.160 I remember being on a radio call-in program, and uh this lady was telling me, you know, I hear you saying it was a book about love, sex, and lasting relationship. 00:17:36.240 --> 00:17:49.920 It was written to singles about how to have deep love, how to have uh a lasting relationship that would really work, and it was about having the kind of sex that God would approve of, and is actually better than any of the sex going out there by the research. 00:17:50.240 --> 00:18:07.920 And it was a call-in radio show, and this lady says, Well, I hear what you're saying about you know the Bible and sexual purity, but here's what I know for sure: Jesus wants me to be happy, and I'm always happiest when I'm involved in immoral things with my boyfriend. 00:18:08.160 --> 00:18:09.359 So I don't think you're right. 00:18:09.519 --> 00:18:19.920 And then the next caller comes in and says, You know, I understand about divorce and what the Bible says and this and that, but I know Jesus wants me to be happy, and my wife is not making me happy, so I divorced her. 00:18:20.720 --> 00:18:21.599 And I'm good. 00:18:22.480 --> 00:18:24.319 I go to church, I read the Bible some. 00:18:25.039 --> 00:18:35.279 But do you understand how we we remake Jesus in a way I remade him to be my self-help basketball guru and find me a good girl? 00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:39.039 And I read my Bible and I prayed. 00:18:39.920 --> 00:18:41.440 I tried to be a nice person. 00:18:42.559 --> 00:18:56.960 Or I like the the one that if you turn on your television and go up in the channels, at least on my network, and probably six out of ten, he's the Jesus that wants to make you healthy and wealthy, and you never get sick, right? 00:18:57.119 --> 00:19:04.319 Just give them X amount of dollars, and that's planting your little seed, and the more money you give, the more Jesus is going to bless you. 00:19:04.720 --> 00:19:08.240 Seems like the more money you give, the richer they get, and the poorer that you get. 00:19:08.400 --> 00:19:12.480 But anyway, but it's the Jesus of prosperity. 00:19:13.039 --> 00:19:24.000 And then finally, I have some really good friends who are really wonderful people, and they smile knowingly and say, Oh, Jesus is a great example, he's a great moral teacher. 00:19:24.079 --> 00:19:37.039 And as I've studied Jesus and Muhammad and Buddha and others, um, I, you know, you can believe what you want, but yes, Jesus is a part of the landscape, and he's certainly lived a wonderful life. 00:19:37.920 --> 00:19:41.359 But he certainly isn't the savior of the world, and he's certainly not God. 00:19:42.079 --> 00:19:51.759 And and all I want you to get in that because we're gonna look at perhaps the clearest picture of who Jesus is and what he actually did. 00:19:53.279 --> 00:19:57.279 And it is majestic and it is overwhelming. 00:19:58.240 --> 00:20:10.559 But my experience is that we often teach it like a theology class, okay, that Jesus is God, that Jesus created all things and by him and for him and through him, and he's the head of the church. 00:20:10.720 --> 00:20:17.839 And we all go away and know in our Bibles that Colossians chapter one teaches that Jesus is God and He made everything. 00:20:19.039 --> 00:20:39.839 But unless you walk into this passage the way the Colossians received it, the Colossians received it as if you don't grasp what Jesus has done for you, and if you don't grasp that there's not Jesus plus anything else, you're going to completely miss it because you will remake Jesus according to a way that works for you. 00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:52.240 And there's lots of messages and lots of messengers that want to get you to believe a little different Jesus that will take you down a path that does not honor God, and you will not experience the goodness of God and what he wants for your life. 00:20:52.480 --> 00:20:55.440 And so Paul's approach is very simple and it's twofold. 00:20:55.599 --> 00:20:59.200 Number one, he reminds them of what Jesus actually did. 00:20:59.359 --> 00:21:01.119 Verses 13 and 14. 00:21:01.279 --> 00:21:12.240 If you want to open your Bibles and f follow along, or your phones, he says, For he, God, rescued us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of person happened to do that, and then both of them felt like there's probably no hope for this marriage, but I'm not gonna give up, so I'm gonna get right with God and I'm gonna dress whatever he wants
