And uh I've mentioned this before, but for centuries, ever since the church has been meeting, there's this kind of practice that we try to lean into. 00:00:35.920 --> 00:00:42.560 Paul established it and he said these words when it comes to every time we gather, he says, greet each other with a holy kiss. 00:00:42.719 --> 00:00:44.399 Now, there's been some cultural changes. 00:00:44.479 --> 00:00:46.000 Uh thank, thank God. 00:00:46.240 --> 00:00:46.799 All right. 00:00:46.960 --> 00:00:59.679 Uh, but we seek to just honor the principle behind this command, which is really just to recognize the brotherhood and sisterhood that we have with each other, all uh woven together through the power of Christ. 00:00:59.840 --> 00:01:06.560 And what we find within scripture is that there's many uh rhythms that God establishes for us. 00:01:06.640 --> 00:01:11.599 And that's to ensure that we just remain connected to one another and that we remain connected to him as well. 00:01:11.760 --> 00:01:27.040 And we have this kind of rhythm right here where we've been a church decentralized on mission throughout the bay, but he asks us on a weekly basis to gather like this, to assemble, to sit under the teaching of his word for transformation and to give him our collective worship. 00:01:27.200 --> 00:01:37.840 And he also has us uh really lean into and practice rhythms of remembering, which we're gonna reflect and celebrate here today when it comes to the communion table. 00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:46.879 Uh, but what we find throughout scripture is that when we lose our edge with these rhythms of remembering, uh, the actually the consequences can be uh pretty devastating. 00:01:47.040 --> 00:02:03.680 One of the most uh uh dramatic illustrations of this is in Judges chapter 2, verse 10, it reads this after a whole generation and begathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who neither knew the Lord nor what he had done for his people. 00:02:04.319 --> 00:02:06.480 So we can be a pretty forgetful people. 00:02:07.359 --> 00:02:19.919 And when we lose our edge, when we lose our rhythms of these core tenets, uh the results can be, again, fairly uh uh devastating for us as as followers. 00:02:20.159 --> 00:02:25.280 So therefore, we're gonna enter into this crucial rhythm of communion that Jesus established. 00:02:25.360 --> 00:02:32.400 And we actually see Paul in the New Testament in 1 Corinthians, he actually describes it and then re-prescribes it again in 1 Corinthians 11. 00:02:32.479 --> 00:02:44.879 And I want you to hear these words because we're gonna spend some time here doing something a little bit different, absorbing the gospel in a new way, but we're actually gonna approach the communion table here, and I want these words to be simmering in the back of your mind. 00:02:45.120 --> 00:02:52.719 So just listen and receive the words of Paul here as he describes uh this rhythm of remembering that Jesus established for us. 00:02:52.879 --> 00:02:56.400 He says this, For I receive from the Lord what I pass on to you. 00:02:56.639 --> 00:03:03.599 The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he'd given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body which is for you. 00:03:03.919 --> 00:03:06.240 Do this in remembrance of me. 00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:11.599 In the same way, after supper, he took the cup, saying, This cup is a new covenant in my blood. 00:03:11.759 --> 00:03:14.479 Do this whenever you drink it in remembrance of me. 00:03:14.639 --> 00:03:20.319 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 00:03:20.479 --> 00:03:33.120 And so, following a time that we're gonna have of some really deep reflection on scripture that's gonna focus us on this new life that's given to us through Jesus' death and resurrection, we're gonna partake in communion as a church family. 00:03:33.759 --> 00:03:39.680 Now, listen, we know some of you may be here just visiting, you're trying to figure out the whole Christian thing and the Jesus thing. 00:03:39.919 --> 00:03:40.960 Just observe. 00:03:41.360 --> 00:03:42.479 No pressure at all, okay? 00:03:42.560 --> 00:03:43.759 We don't want to feel any pressure. 00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:54.240 Just lean into the mystery of what's happening, and there's some symbol symbolism here, and there's some uh metaphor, and I'd encourage you just to lean in and observe because it can be a very powerful act. 00:03:54.719 --> 00:04:06.719 But as we approach the table, guys, we're gonna take, again, what I mentioned, some concentrated time to reflect on the power of the gospel, this loving and sacrificial act of our God to rescue you and I. 00:04:07.439 --> 00:04:15.039 And we're gonna do that in a way that actually allows us to saturate on the gospel-rich words from the book of Ephesians. 00:04:15.120 --> 00:04:20.319 It's this letter that's theologically profound written by the Apostle Paul. 00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:32.399 And before we enter into this, I would say, saturation of scripture, I want us to back up and just get a better understanding of Ephesians, just so we have a little understanding of what we're about to hear. 00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:42.399 Now, it was the Apostle Paul following his conversion of being this uh, he was uh essentially a Middle Eastern terrorist that turned into a serial church planner. 00:04:42.639 --> 00:04:45.199 And uh uh he was an entrepreneur. 00:04:45.439 --> 00:04:55.759 And one of the cities that he was drawn to for several years was Ephesus, which was this large advanced city that was also the epicenter of all these Greek and Roman gods. 00:04:55.920 --> 00:05:06.720 And so prior to establishing himself for several years in Ephesus, Paul typically did a thing where he would kind of do a drive-by, drop off a few people, allow them to kind of get the groundwork going, and then come by. 00:05:06.879 --> 00:05:10.560 And so he did that again when it comes to the city of Ephesus. 00:05:10.800 --> 00:05:14.720 Does a drive-by, drops off this dynamic duo named Priscilla and Aquila. 00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:22.079 It's this married couple, and they operated in a way that was actually fairly counter-cultural, but very biblically gospel-rooted. 00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:39.759 I'm gonna say gospel-rooted, when it came to Priscilla, the female of this dynamic duo, actually being the main leader and the main overseer and authority of this process to the point of even giving instruction and correction to one of the main teachers of her day and his day, Apollos. 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:48.240 And so Paul then eventually makes his way to Ephesus, he establishes himself, and more and more people are converted to Christianity by the thousands. 00:05:48.319 --> 00:06:00.000 And soon we have these little pockets and clusters of churches all over Ephesus, and soon this begins to infringe upon the false gods business of this city, and Paul is run out of town, which is very on brand for him. 00:06:00.079 --> 00:06:01.759 This was a typical thing for him. 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:09.759 Paul only had really one other short moment to go back to Ephesus to speak to the Ephesian leaders, and it was just for a short moment. 00:06:09.920 --> 00:06:13.439 Then several years later, Paul is imprisoned in Rome for his faith. 00:06:13.519 --> 00:06:22.480 He's waiting to be terminated, and he sends out several letters of instruction to the churches in which he's helped plant. 00:06:22.879 --> 00:06:29.439 One of those letters going to the Ephesians, this again, group of churches in Ephesus. 00:06:29.680 --> 00:06:41.600 And it's there that we're going to uh lean into really just the first half of this book, because the first half he is simply talking about the power of the gospel. 00:06:41.839 --> 00:06:46.959 The second half, it's like, okay, if this is the gospel, then how do you live it out within the unique context that you're in? 00:06:47.199 --> 00:07:00.800 And what we find here is the purpose of Ephesians and the purpose of Paul's letter to this group of followers of Christ is really to get them back to the centrality and the foundations of the gospel. 00:07:01.439 --> 00:07:11.439 Because what was happening is we had these uncircumcised people that they were known as, these non-Jewish people, they were called Gentiles that were converting to Christianity. 00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:28.319 And essentially what was happening is they were experiencing all of a sudden this legalistic pressure from these Jewish Christians saying, yes, okay, you're partially in the family of God, but to truly be a part of the family of God, you need to take on these other Jewish Old Testament practices as well. 00:07:28.399 --> 00:07:29.759 And then you're in. 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:46.000 And so what this was doing, it was cheapening the work of Jesus on the cross, in which he established a very new, all-inclusive covenant with anyone who believes in Jesus as their leader and rescuer is adopted into God's eternal family. 00:07:46.160 --> 00:07:53.920 And so Paul begins the first half of this letter again, talking about the beauty of the gospel, and then second, he talks about, okay, how do you go and apply it? 00:07:54.000 --> 00:08:04.639 And we're gonna immerse ourselves in the first part of Ephesians and just look at the power and the mystery of the gospel as we center then on the communion table. 00:08:04.720 --> 00:08:19.920 And I think this is gonna do a beautiful job of just like right, like refocusing our minds on what we're about to do and the hugeness and the power and the mystery and the incredible grace of the gospel and his work on the cross. 00:08:20.079 --> 00:08:32.720 Now, typically, when we approach the Bible, we read it, we interpret it, we apply it today, we're just gonna listen and we're just gonna absorb the sacred text of Paul within these first four chapters of Ephesians. 00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:39.519 You see, Paul described in 2 Timothy that the Bible is God breathed. 00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:43.200 That's why we say the Bible is God's word. 00:08:43.600 --> 00:08:52.159 Because when Scripture speaks, God speaks, and he does so so through the personality and context of the author, and in this case, a Middle Eastern man named Paul. 00:08:52.480 --> 00:08:58.240 And so, as Jesus treated the scriptures as divinely authoritative, we're gonna do the same. 00:08:59.120 --> 00:09:04.960 Awakening, we're not hearing just the words of Paul, we're hearing the words of our living God right here, right now. 00:09:06.879 --> 00:09:13.840 And so, to be the voice box of God's word, I'm gonna ask uh Say Khalili 00:09:29.519 Now, if you don't know Sayah, uh the interesting thing, a Middle Eastern man himself from Iran, and he is an elder at our church, which we call the Leadership Council. 00:09:29.679 --> profound way, in a stretching way. 00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:56.159 Um, scripture memory has been something that's been a part of you for the last several years, but recently you've really catapulted your passion and desire around this. 00:09:56.240 --> 00:10:03.200 Can you tell us just what was the thing that sort of uh kind of launched you at a whole different level when it comes to memorizing God's word? 00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:04.080 Sure. 00:10:04.720 --> 00:10:10.480 2023 was a very difficult year for our family. 00:10:11.759 --> 00:10:18.559 Um I heard about my mom's sudden passing away back home in Iran, that's where I'm originally from. 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:33.759 It was unexpected, and then uh my dear wife Shadi was diagnosed with Parkinson's and uh was struggling with other related health issues pretty much throughout the year. 00:10:33.840 --> 00:10:36.960 So it was a very difficult year. 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:57.039 I would say it's probably the hardest year of our life and I remember being shocked, being discouraged, being actually honestly angry at God for causing this or allowing this to happen. 00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:06.879 And uh and then I finally the the season kind of ended, thank God. 00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:11.279 I realized I need to pick up the pieces, and where do I start? 00:11:11.440 --> 00:11:24.799 And uh the book of Ephesians was a book that I was reading at the time, and chapter six of the book of Ephesians, I felt God speaking to my heart through just a couple of words. 00:11:25.840 --> 00:11:33.440 In chapter six, verse ten, it says, Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 00:11:34.879 --> 00:12:00.559 And I realized that I need to be strong at this stage in my life and be the voice of hope, the voice of encouragement to my wife, and so that we could pray through this season, pray the big prayers for healing from God, and seek, knock, and ask, and be there for her. 00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:06.879 And uh and thank God, the strength that we all feel. 00:12:07.039 --> 00:12:29.600 I mean, God doesn't just ask us to be strong like on our own, it's in him, and it's actually in his word that when we immerse ourselves in his word, which he says, by the way, it's the armor of God, that what happens is um with scripture memory, actually, there is a special kind of transformation that happens in you. 00:12:31.279 --> 00:12:33.600 Paul says, put on the word of God. 00:12:33.840 --> 00:12:36.960 So it kind of reminds me of like when we put on our clothes. 00:12:37.200 --> 00:12:40.320 We all like on a cold day will put on clothes. 00:12:40.399 --> 00:12:43.840 You know, we're we won't just go out without our clothes on. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:49.279 And when you memorize scripture, it's like putting it on, and you carry it with you. 00:12:49.519 --> 00:12:53.440 You carry it to places that you may not have access to the Bible. 00:12:53.679 --> 00:12:59.120 In fact, the country I come from in Iran, people are persecuted for their faith. 00:12:59.360 --> 00:13:08.000 So they purposely memorize scripture in case they got arrested and are thrown in prison without a Bible, and they thrive off of that. 00:13:08.399 --> 00:13:17.440 And so 2023 and all its challenges actually increased my desire and thirst for God's work. 00:13:17.600 --> 00:13:30.080 And I realized I don't want to just memorize like key verses, I want to memorize like passages, I want to eventually memorize like an epistle, and and that's where I am today. 00:13:30.320 --> 00:13:31.440 That's awesome. 00:13:31.759 --> 00:13:34.000 And you had you had mentioned this getting angry. 00:13:34.159 --> 00:13:37.679 If you take one thing away, like godly people can get angry with God. 00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:41.600 You even said last service, you you turned your back on God, but he never turned your his back on you. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:42.320 That's right. 00:13:42.639 --> 00:13:51.840 And I I think that's a key thing for us to remember is that we're on this journey together, and uh we have the peaks and the valleys, but God is there every step of the way. 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:56.000 The other thing I want you to capture is like when we do reading plans here, there's a purpose for it. 00:13:56.159 --> 00:14:08.000 We have a lot of them, and we encourage you to engage in them because research continues to show what scripture points out is that the number one thing that catapults our spiritual maturity is simply Bible reading. 00:14:08.320 --> 00:14:11.519 It doesn't even have to be Bible reading and journaling or Bible reading and memorizing. 00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:22.080 Those are all good, but just the simple act of Bible reading, and it really emphasizes this truth in Hebrews 4.12 that says, For the word of God is living and active. 00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:44.399 And guys, today we are going to experience the living activity of God's word as Siah gives us the words of Paul that are actually the words of God, and to allow that to direct our thoughts on the hugeness and vastness and the beauty of this gospel, of this loving act of Jesus and what he did for us on the cross. 00:14:44.639 --> 00:14:58.559 And I feel like it's going to appropriately just move us to the table and allow that to shine its light on our oneness and on the sacrifice and on the hugeness of this
