00:03:42.960 So she's like, oh, this would be good for you. 00:03:43.199 --> 00:03:53.759 One of the premises of the book, though, is that you can't reverse aging, but most of what we see today isn't aging, it's decaying. 00:03:54.080 --> 00:04:02.400 And so there are practices and habits that we do to not decay, but and that's where you can live to your 80s and beyond. 00:04:02.479 --> 00:04:10.080 And we can't reverse age, uh, decaying, or aging rather, but we can do some things around this decaying stuff. 00:04:10.319 --> 00:04:15.360 And much of our activity today is how do we sleepwalking through life and move to truly living. 00:04:57.920 --> 00:05:03.199 We're gonna spend the next eight weeks in what's called the book of 1 John. 00:05:03.839 --> 00:05:06.319 Uh and it's really not a book at all. 00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:08.560 It's some people call it a letter. 00:05:08.720 --> 00:05:10.720 It's not even a letter, it's a sermon. 00:05:10.959 --> 00:05:14.319 It's the sermon of a guy named John. 00:05:14.639 --> 00:05:25.600 And so before we dive into the uh sermon today, I wanted to just give us an overview of the book of 1 John, because we're going to be spending eight weeks teaching through this book. 00:05:25.759 --> 00:05:32.720 And the book of 1 John was written by a guy, uh tradition has it as John the Disciple. 00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:34.720 Uh it's a sermon of his. 00:05:34.959 --> 00:05:47.199 He he wrote the Gospel of John, and this is where it gets a little confusing at times because you have in the New Testament, you have the Gospel of John, then at the end of the New Testament, you have one, two, and three. 00:05:47.439 --> 00:05:51.439 John, the first, second, and third John, and these are little letters. 00:05:51.519 --> 00:05:53.680 Uh, and this is John's sermon. 00:05:53.839 --> 00:06:10.399 He also wrote Revelation, and this is John's sermon that he wrote to a group of house churches in and around Ephesus, uh, about 50 to 60 years after the resurrection of Jesus, somewhere between 85 and 95 AD. 00:06:10.800 --> 00:06:17.199 John the disciple is in his 80s, maybe even in his 90s at this point. 00:06:17.360 --> 00:06:31.759 And he's writing back, and it's brilliant as we begin to read it and to understand the profound impact and intimacy and relationship he has and desire he has for the church to really know Jesus. 00:06:31.920 --> 00:06:38.879 And the reason he wrote this sermon is he was addressing false teaching that threatened the church. 00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:41.279 It was actually dividing the church. 00:06:41.439 --> 00:06:44.319 There was deep disagreement and disunity. 00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:50.639 And the the most of the false teaching was this idea or concept called Gnosticism. 00:06:50.800 --> 00:06:53.519 It comes from the Greek word gnosis, knowledge. 00:06:53.759 --> 00:06:58.560 And it meant to have a very special knowledge, a secret knowledge. 00:06:58.720 --> 00:07:03.759 You actually had to kind of build your way up these rungs of secret knowledge. 00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:12.240 At its core, Gnosticism would say that matter is evil, physical is evil, and the spirit or spiritual is good. 00:07:12.959 --> 00:07:19.680 And this teaching was undermining the actual who Jesus is. 00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:26.480 It was saying that Jesus wasn't really a human or a man, he was only spiritual or God. 00:07:26.959 --> 00:07:37.600 And in that it undermines the work of Jesus in our lives, that he became one of us, what we are, that he could make us what he is. 00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:52.240 And so the major themes of this book are really summed up in three words: life, truth, and love, all around this idea of fellowship with God and one another. 00:07:52.399 --> cover the introduction in 1 John, four verses, and what he wants to do is help us understand three big things that you're created for. 00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:49.279 Like, what are you really created we do as kids and we can't help it. 00:10:09.679 --> 00:10:22.000 You remember when you're little, and some of you may hopefully still have this, when the life was magical, there was mystery, and then we grow older and we grow out of it. 00:10:22.320 --> 00:10:29.840 I want you to notice John, who's 80 years old, writing about the wonder of Jesus. 00:10:30.639 --> 00:10:42.000 50 to 60 years after the resurrection of Jesus, he writes this introduction that just is like this explosion of his heart around wonder. 00:10:42.399 --> 00:10:43.600 Notice what he says. 00:10:43.840 --> 00:10:57.039 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we've seen with our eyes, which we have looked at, and our hands have touched, this we proclaim concerning the word of life. 00:10:57.200 --> 00:11:00.639 That which was from the beginning, that is speaking about Jesus. 00:11:00.879 --> 00:11:11.440 Jesus, that he is the one who existed from limitless eternity, has entered time, space, and taken up residence on earth. 00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:16.320 He's like the eternity one, the eternity stepped into history. 00:11:16.480 --> 00:11:18.080 And then you see this progression. 00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:20.399 This is how wonder works, by the way. 00:11:20.559 --> 00:11:32.559 And you see this progression into intimacy and knowledge and understanding, which we had heard, like I sudden you get to see it, and it's this idea of I just got a glance of it. 00:11:40.159 --> 00:11:50.799 And then he goes even deeper, because this is the space, this is the moment of wonder that we not gonna take a glance, I'm gonna take it in long enough as to understand the significance or the importance of that thing or person. 00:12:25.759 --> 00:12:32.159 That which was from the beginning, when I we we saw him, we heard him, and then we beheld him. 00:12:32.799 --> 00:12:38.399 We looked at him long enough, we lingered, we beheld, and then he says, What? 00:12:38.639 --> 00:12:40.000 We have touched him. 00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:48.159 Now notice he's addressing this heresy, this false teaching that Jesus wasn't fully human. 00:12:48.399 --> 00:12:55.039 He's like, No, no, no, he wasn't some, you know, myth, some ghost. 00:12:55.679 --> 00:12:56.960 We touched him. 00:12:58.159 --> 00:12:59.039 He was real. 00:12:59.519 --> 00:13:02.960 We're talking about a real person in real time. 00:13:05.200 --> 00:13:16.639 That word touch is the same word that's used for someone who's blind that would touch someone to understand what is in front of them, to truly grasp with their senses. 00:13:17.919 --> 00:13:23.840 And this we we proclaimed concerning the word of life. 00:13:24.639 --> 00:13:25.919 And he goes on. 00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:38.480 The life appeared, we have seen it, we testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 00:13:38.799 --> 00:13:51.679 We proclaim to you, not a speculation, we proclaim to you not a fable, not a myth, not some abstract appearance, but a historical person we call life. 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:55.679 Four things about Jesus that draw our hearts to wonder. 00:13:55.840 --> 00:14:00.080 The first thing I want you to notice is Jesus is eternal. 00:14:00.799 --> 00:14:02.000 Jesus is eternal. 00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:08.480 Jesus is the eternal creator God who stepped into time and history, becoming fully man. 00:14:09.120 --> 00:14:14.399 That he's eternal, that the infinite life of God Himself took shape before us. 00:14:14.480 --> 00:14:15.279 Think about this. 00:14:15.519 --> 00:14:24.639 The infinite life of God took shape, that he's eternal, the eternal one who created all that there is stepped into time. 00:14:25.919 --> 00:14:34.799 That we begin to behold Jesus not as a good man, we make the opposite problem that they did in their day. 00:14:35.679 --> 00:14:40.559 We don't diminish Jesus' humanity, we diminish his deity. 00:14:46.559 --> 00:14:49.919 And that also Jesus is a real man. 00:14:50.799 --> 00:14:52.399 He is human. 00:14:52.720 --> 00:14:58.159 He took on flesh, he became, like we said earlier, he became one of us. 00:14:59.440 --> 00:15:10.720 The incredible truth that God with us, not against us, God for us, God came down among us to become one of us. 00:15:12.639 --> 00:15:16.960 Third thing I want you to notice, he says in here, Jesus is the word. 00:15:17.519 --> 00:15:26.559 If you're familiar with the gospel of John, he begins it this way: In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. 00:15:26.720 --> 00:15:28.240 He was with God in the beginning. 00:15:28.399 --> 00:15:32.080 All things uh came through him and by him. 00:15:32.559 --> 00:15:37.279 This idea of word in in the Greek, it's the it's the word Lagos. 00:15:37.679 --> 00:15:46.000 And Lagos for Judaism, it meant the creative self-expression of God by which the cosmos were made. 00:15:46.159 --> 00:15:46.799 He is the word. 00:15:47.039 --> 00:15:48.159 It's the title for Jesus. 00:15:48.240 --> 00:15:54.320 He is the Lagos, he is the creative self-expression of God by which everything was made. 00:15:54.559 --> 00:16:00.960 In Greek thought, the Lagos is the divine reason that gives the universe coherence and purpose. 00:16:01.279 --> 00:16:06.879 He is the origin of it all, the reason
