WEBVTT

00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:02.319
Welcome to the Awakening Church podcast.

00:00:02.560 --> 00:00:07.040
We pray this message encourages you and provides the hope and light of Jesus Christ.

00:00:07.200 --> 00:00:08.640
Thanks for tuning in.

00:00:18.399 --> 00:00:23.920
A few weeks ago, I had the joy of getting to be at the Coldplay concert with my family.

00:00:24.079 --> 00:00:24.960
I love Coldplay.

00:00:25.039 --> 00:00:26.719
I've loved them for 20 years now.

00:00:26.879 --> 00:00:33.039
It's fun to have something that uh I loved in college and now that my kids they kind of love in college as well.

00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:33.759
That was fun.

00:00:33.920 --> 00:00:34.640
That was great.

00:00:34.799 --> 00:00:36.079
Uh and so we're there.

00:00:36.159 --> 00:00:38.079
It's graduation celebration time.

00:00:38.159 --> 00:00:39.840
You have our whole family.

00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:46.240
And then as the music's getting, uh Guy and his family, he's about my age, and he's got his kids.

00:00:46.320 --> 00:00:50.240
He had younger kids though, but uh the music starts.

00:00:50.640 --> 00:00:53.119
And it's a cold play, it's great, it's amazing, right?

00:00:53.359 --> 00:00:57.840
And and both he and I are in like just full dad position, right?

00:00:58.079 --> 00:00:59.679
Hands like this, the music's going.

00:00:59.840 --> 00:01:01.759
I'm like, yeah, it's good.

00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:03.520
Oh, this is good.

00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:12.719
And then and then he got to something before I did, and I couldn't do it because I didn't want to like um somehow look like I was mocking him.

00:01:13.120 --> 00:01:24.079
What I was was I was jealous of him because all of a sudden it got to a really good part, and he pressed his lips together like that, right there.

00:01:24.239 --> 00:01:35.840
And then he got his hand and he just started pumping, started pumping to the music, and I looked over, and I'm still in just classic dad.

00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:38.959
Yeah, this is good, but I want to pump with you.

00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:40.799
It was so amazing.

00:01:40.959 --> 00:01:44.319
I'm like, this is this is his dad as it gets right here.

00:01:45.120 --> 00:01:48.560
I I actually wanted us like for me for Father's Day.

00:01:48.640 --> 00:01:54.560
I'm like, I wish I could play a cold play song and get you all to pump with me just as a present to myself.

00:01:54.799 --> 00:01:59.840
Um, but uh uh because of copyright rules, I can't play cold play.

00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:06.959
Um, so would you would you just at some point today you hear a song, press those lips together.

00:02:08.479 --> 00:02:11.680
And just would would you do it for me just at some point?

00:02:11.919 --> 00:02:13.680
That would be a gift to me.

00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:14.319
Thank you.

00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:15.840
I appreciate that.

00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:20.319
You know, today we're talking about how do you leave a legacy that lasts?

00:02:20.800 --> 00:02:22.639
How do you leave a legacy that lasts?

00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:28.560
I actually didn't think much about leaving a legacy until I had kids.

00:02:29.360 --> 00:02:36.639
Um, you know, I when we're kids were little, every once in a while we'd go to Disneyland together.

00:02:36.719 --> 00:02:50.319
And as we'd go to Disneyland, uh some point one of them would get tired, and so I'd put one of them on my shoulders and carry them, or maybe there was a parade going by, and so I'd hold them up on my shoulders so that they could see.

00:02:50.639 --> 00:02:56.080
And that's always struck me as a picture of what I wanted to do as a dad.

00:02:56.560 --> 00:03:06.400
My prayer, my dream was I longed that my kids would sit on my shoulders so that they could see further and go farther than I ever could.

00:03:07.039 --> 00:03:13.039
I I had this longing that my ceiling would actually be their floor.

00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:17.360
You know, we don't think about legacy a lot, do we?

00:03:18.159 --> 00:03:22.800
But all of us will leave a legacy, every single one of us.

00:03:23.039 --> 00:03:30.080
It's funny, we focus so much on living longer, but not as much on living well or leaving a lasting legacy.

00:03:30.719 --> 00:03:34.159
How do you leave a legacy that lasts?

00:03:34.319 --> 00:03:38.159
We're in this series called uh this the maybe I could say it.

00:03:38.319 --> 00:03:38.800
There we go.

00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:42.240
The dysfunctional family of God.

00:03:42.639 --> 00:03:44.800
And uh, if you got your notes, why don't you open them up?

00:03:44.879 --> 00:03:48.159
And if you got your Bible, you could open it up to Genesis chapter six.

00:03:48.240 --> 00:03:52.639
We're looking at the life of Noah and leaving a legacy.

00:03:52.800 --> 00:03:56.400
Go ahead and turn to your neighbor and say, leaving a legacy.

00:03:58.319 --> 00:04:04.000
Now, I want to give you the context for Noah and what we're stepping into.

00:04:04.319 --> 00:04:08.319
And the context is dysfunction at every level.

00:04:08.479 --> 00:04:15.360
If you go back to Genesis 1, 2, and 3, Genesis 3, you'll see uh marital dysfunction, Adam and Eve.

00:04:15.599 --> 00:04:20.879
Sin fractures intimacy with each other, with God, introduces pain, disconnection, and domination.

00:04:21.040 --> 00:04:23.199
Last week we looked at Cain and Abel.

00:04:23.279 --> 00:04:26.079
You'll see not just marital, but familial dysfunction.

00:04:26.240 --> 00:04:29.839
Cain and Abel, jealousy, anger turned deadly.

00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:36.160
We see not just the first family and the first brothers, but then sadly, tragically, the first murder.

00:04:36.319 --> 00:04:37.920
Cain murders Abel.

00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:44.560
And then if you read on in chapter four, you'll see it move from marital, familial, then to societal.

00:04:44.639 --> 00:04:49.920
And person you probably aren't familiar with, a guy named Lamech, uh, and he's kind of lame.

00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:52.959
Uh it is how it is.

00:04:53.439 --> 00:04:59.920
No, Lamech, he gets offended by somebody and he kills them.

00:05:00.480 --> 00:05:16.560
Then he brags about it, and he institutionalizes this revenge killing, this policy of retaliation, and violence starts to become a virtue, and it moves from societal, these cities of violence, then to global humanity.

00:05:16.720 --> 00:05:20.079
Corruption is celebrated, injustice institutionalized.

00:05:20.240 --> 00:05:25.519
Wicked is no no longer the exception, it is the expectation.

00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:27.680
And this brings us to Noah.

00:05:27.920 --> 00:05:32.079
Genesis 6, verse 5, we see this recap or overview.

00:05:32.240 --> 00:05:44.000
The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.

00:05:45.120 --> 00:05:53.920
Then we get this insight into God, he says, the Lord regretted that he made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.

00:05:54.399 --> 00:05:58.480
And then you get this glimmer of hope in the midst of such darkness.

00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:04.959
But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

00:06:05.600 --> 00:06:06.399
Like how Dr.

00:06:06.560 --> 00:06:12.160
Bill Arnold said it, humanity's heart is evil and Yahweh's heart is broken.

00:06:12.959 --> 00:06:18.079
And this is the context, this is the backdrop for the story of Noah.

00:06:18.319 --> 00:06:21.600
And probably many of you are familiar somewhat with the story of Noah.

00:06:21.680 --> 00:06:23.600
If you're not, let me just give you a recap.

00:06:23.839 --> 00:06:31.920
The story of Noah in response to the gravity of humanity's wickedness, the righteous judgment and justice of God is coming upon the earth.

00:06:32.160 --> 00:06:42.240
What began in Eden as very good spiraled into violence, corruption, and chaos, and so a flood, flood to wipe out wickedness.

00:06:42.399 --> 00:06:49.439
Some people believe it covered the entire world, some believe it affected just the known world at the time.

00:06:50.079 --> 00:06:53.040
And honestly, the text could go either way, so it doesn't matter.

00:06:53.120 --> 00:06:54.720
Don't get caught up in it.

00:06:55.120 --> 00:07:04.160
In Genesis 1, in God creating the world, you see, God divided the waters from the land, and here we see an act of uncreation.

00:07:04.480 --> 00:07:07.199
The waters returned to cover the land.

00:07:08.240 --> 00:07:12.160
In a world gone mad, Noah stood apart.

00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:14.079
He found favor in God's eyes.

00:07:14.160 --> 00:07:21.759
There was only one who didn't capitulate to corruption, who, in the midst of evil, chaos, and wickedness, lived a counter-cultural life.

00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:25.519
And God in his grace chose Noah to begin again.

00:07:25.680 --> 00:07:26.560
And what did he do?

00:07:26.720 --> 00:07:28.639
He called him to build an ark.

00:07:28.879 --> 00:07:29.439
An ark.

00:07:29.600 --> 00:07:30.240
What is an ark?

00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:32.160
Well, let me tell you, I'm glad you asked.

00:07:32.399 --> 00:07:52.959
An ark is a 450-foot-long boat, 70 feet wide, 45 feet high, three-story vessel that Noah was building for approximately somewhere around 50 to 75 years.

00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:57.600
God gave people decades to turn from their wickedness, by the way.

00:07:57.839 --> 00:07:59.680
Eventually the ark was completed.

00:07:59.759 --> 00:08:01.759
The animals came two by two onto it.

00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:07.199
The rains came, 40 days of rain, 150 days of flooding, devastation, uncreation.

00:08:07.519 --> 00:08:14.000
Noah, his sons, their families spent a little over a year on the ark as they waited for the waters to recede.

00:08:14.079 --> 00:08:20.959
And when they stepped off, they stepped into a new world, a new beginning, a fresh start for humanity.

00:08:21.279 --> 00:08:22.399
This is the backdrop.

00:08:22.639 --> 00:08:24.480
This is the story of Noah.

00:08:25.120 --> 00:08:32.080
How do you experience or how do you uh have a legacy that lasts?

00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:33.360
No.

00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:40.799
Right at the very beginning, this is like the big idea for the entire sermon.

00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:50.559
Is I want you to just see this thing, and this actually we find it uh actually before we even hear much about who Noah is.

00:08:51.519 --> 00:08:57.279
Is simply this thought the legacy you've been handed doesn't have to be the legacy you leave.

00:08:58.240 --> 00:09:02.399
The legacy you've been handed doesn't have to be the legacy you leave.

00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:03.440
Now think about this.

00:09:03.679 --> 00:09:16.320
The legacy Noah's handed, we we think about this culture of corruption, that the world is going to hell in a handbasket, that everything is going this way, and he lived a counter-cultural life.

00:09:16.480 --> 00:09:22.720
He said it wasn't that he's just like, I can live differently in light of this legacy you've been handed.

00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:25.519
Doesn't necessarily have to be the legacy you leave.

00:09:25.759 --> 00:09:36.559
Now, in Genesis chapter 5, there's this incredible little thing about Noah that his parents said about him that we miss that is, I think, so significant in this conversation.

00:09:36.720 --> 00:09:40.960
In 529, it tells us why his parents named him Noah.

00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:42.799
Noah, by the way, means rest.

00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:52.720
It says, he named him Noah and said, He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord had cursed.

00:09:54.000 --> 00:10:12.399
Noah's parents' vision for Noah's life wasn't that he would do something great, that he was destined to do, you know, whatever, or yeah, Noah's vision or Noah's parents' vision for his life was Noah was their retirement plan.

00:10:12.480 --> 00:10:13.840
That's what that's saying.

00:10:14.399 --> 00:10:16.240
Yeah, it's like, you know what?

00:10:16.399 --> 00:10:23.120
Life's hard, it's been long, the only way we can't work is having a kid that will start to work and take care of us.

00:10:23.279 --> 00:10:30.080
So we're gonna call you rest, because you're our rest, and we're gonna just take it easy.

00:10:31.440 --> 00:10:35.600
The legacy you've been handed doesn't have to be the legacy you leave.

00:10:35.679 --> 00:10:39.519
Now it's interesting because we all carry wounds, don't we?

00:10:39.840 --> 00:10:42.320
We all carry family wounds.

00:10:43.360 --> 00:10:49.840
Mother, fatherhood wounds, and fatherhood wounds honestly are some of the deepest ones we carry.

00:10:53.919 --> 00:11:00.320
And there's been words that have been spoken over you, or a path that was charted for you.

00:11:02.320 --> 00:11:09.919
And honestly, for some, it's been something that you've been trying to break free, but you just keep feeling yourself drawn back to.

00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:28.159
You've run from it, and then you became a parent, and you start saying the same things your parents said, and you're like, wait a second, am I just becoming the legacy you've been handed doesn't have to be the legacy you leave.

00:11:28.240 --> 00:11:31.120
So how do you have a legacy that lasts?

00:11:31.279 --> 00:11:33.279
Let me just give you three thoughts here.

00:11:33.600 --> 00:11:36.639
First, legacy starts with your audience.

00:11:36.960 --> 00:11:38.799
Legacy starts with your audience.

00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:46.720
So you notice in verse 8 it said, but that now Noah found favor with in the eyes of the Lord.

00:11:46.960 --> 00:11:48.000
Noah found favor.

00:11:48.080 --> 00:11:53.840
If you got if you're taking notes or you start drawing a circle in your Bible, that word favor.

00:11:55.120 --> 00:11:58.720
It also in Hebrew is the word grace.

00:11:59.519 --> 00:12:02.960
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

00:12:03.200 --> 00:12:04.720
Legacy starts with your audience.

00:12:04.799 --> 00:12:06.080
I want you to notice this.

00:12:06.399 --> 00:12:09.679
God has grace eyes for you.

00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:18.559
I don't know what you think God looks like when he looks at you.

00:12:19.279 --> 00:12:22.159
When his eyes gaze at you.

00:12:23.440 --> 00:12:31.360
I don't know if you think it's angry eyes, frustration, disappointed eyes.

00:12:31.759 --> 00:12:35.279
God has grace eyes for you.

00:12:35.679 --> 00:12:40.240
Grace, God's unearned, undeserved favor towards you.

00:12:40.639 --> 00:12:49.200
Grace is his empowering presence to enable you to do and to be what you could not do or be on your own.

00:12:49.360 --> 00:12:50.320
This is grace.

00:12:50.480 --> 00:12:55.440
And he turns and he has grace eyes towards you.

00:12:57.120 --> 00:12:59.679
Legacy for us, by the way, begins.

00:13:00.080 --> 00:13:04.960
It is the starting point with who am I living for?

00:13:05.200 --> 00:13:07.919
Whose approval are you living for?

00:13:08.799 --> 00:13:12.559
But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

00:13:12.879 --> 00:13:16.799
We seek favor in everybody's eyes, don't we?

00:13:17.120 --> 00:13:18.799
Who am I living for?

00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:25.919
Whose word of affirmation means most to me?

00:13:28.320 --> 00:13:35.519
Gosh, man, we we are trying to live for the affirmation or approval maybe of someone past in our life.

00:13:35.600 --> 00:13:43.120
It could be a parent, a coach, it could be we're trying to live for the approval of other people around us, and we're running after all these things.

00:13:43.279 --> 00:13:49.679
It could be we're we're just somehow trying to live for the approval of our boss or our coworkers or the people around us.

00:13:49.919 --> 00:13:51.039
Whose approval?

00:13:51.279 --> 00:13:51.919
I love this.

00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:52.559
You know what?

00:13:52.799 --> 00:13:57.279
Noah spent like 50 to 75 years building this ark.

00:13:57.440 --> 00:13:59.840
Do you wonder like what people said?

00:14:01.120 --> 00:14:05.279
There is no water in sight where he's building it either.

00:14:08.320 --> 00:14:10.159
No, what are you doing?

00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:13.200
That's weird.

00:14:14.159 --> 00:14:15.919
Probably save some wood for us.

00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:16.399
I don't know.

00:14:16.480 --> 00:14:21.519
I mean, there's all sorts of things that they could have said.

00:14:23.279 --> 00:14:29.120
But here's the thing: if I have favor in the eyes of the Lord, I actually don't need your approval.

00:14:29.919 --> 00:14:41.919
If I have favor in your eyes, God, if you're looking down on me with grace eyes, I can step into any situation confident because I'm not hoping you somehow you will accept me.

00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:44.000
I'm fully accepted, fully approved.

00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:48.639
And so I step into this moment, living for an audience of one.

00:14:53.679 --> 00:14:55.440
Living just, you know what?

00:14:55.600 --> 00:14:58.480
I God, you have it all.

00:14:59.039 --> 00:15:05.120
We live in an attention economy where identity is shaped by affirmation.

00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:14.000
What would change in your life if you realize you already have the favor of God?

00:15:17.360 --> 00:15:20.799
He already has grace eyes towards you.

00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:29.120
This whole idea of leaving a legacy is pretty overwhelming to me.

00:15:29.840 --> 00:15:41.840
Uh this morning um we had a sweet little time uh around the table as a family, and each of my kids wrote notes, and like they were just precious to me.

00:15:41.919 --> 00:15:44.879
Like their words, like it's just precious to me.

00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:52.480
Um and they said things like, Dad, you're my hero.

00:15:53.360 --> 00:15:55.279
Or I want to be like you.

00:15:56.639 --> 00:15:58.559
Which is unbelievable.

00:16:00.320 --> 00:16:03.360
And then it's overwhelming because I'm broken.

00:16:04.879 --> 00:16:07.919
I don't feel good enough to be anybody's hero.

00:16:10.960 --> 00:16:14.799
The pressure, like I I'm not good enough.

00:16:18.080 --> 00:16:20.960
My dad, he drilled this verse in.

00:16:21.039 --> 00:16:26.720
It's like one of, I think one of his life verses is 2 Chronicles 16, 9.

00:16:27.440 --> 00:16:38.080
It says, for the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the whole earth, searching for a heart who's completely his, that he might strongly support them.

00:16:39.120 --> 00:16:52.320
Like the grace eyes of God scanning this room right now, searching not for somebody that has it all together, but just for a heart that's his.

00:16:53.440 --> 00:16:57.919
You're overwhelmed, it's too big, you can't do it, that's okay.

00:17:00.320 --> 00:17:08.319
Because my grace, grace, God's empowering presence to enable you to do what you cannot do and be what you cannot be on your own.

00:17:08.480 --> 00:17:11.440
He says, My grace is pouring out towards you.

00:17:13.359 --> 00:17:15.599
I want to strengthen you.

00:17:16.319 --> 00:17:18.319
I want to empower you.

00:17:21.359 --> 00:17:25.279
I'm looking right now, and whoever's heart is mine.

00:17:25.680 --> 00:17:29.039
I'm I'm eager to strengthen you.

00:17:31.599 --> 00:17:34.480
Legacy begins with audience.

00:17:34.720 --> 00:17:35.680
Who's your audience?

00:17:36.000 --> 00:17:37.599
Who are you living for?

00:17:38.240 --> 00:17:40.160
Uh, practically, what does this look like?

00:17:40.240 --> 00:17:42.319
Um, there's a question that a mentor of mine, Dr.

00:17:42.400 --> 00:17:43.519
Charlie Self, asked.

00:17:43.759 --> 00:17:51.359
We were having a men's leadership thing in my backyard several years ago, and this question stuck with me because it's like kind of overwhelming.

00:17:51.519 --> 00:17:53.359
Like, how do we do this?

00:17:54.720 --> 00:17:56.480
And he just asked this simple question.

00:17:56.559 --> 00:18:00.559
He said, This is the question that he asked himself every day.

00:18:01.279 --> 00:18:04.640
Simply, am I doing today well?

00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:09.279
There's nothing you can do about yesterday.

00:18:10.880 --> 00:18:12.880
And tomorrow's yet to come.

00:18:13.519 --> 00:18:16.640
Am I simply just doing today well?

00:18:16.960 --> 00:18:20.640
Wake up today and God, do you have my heart?

00:18:21.200 --> 00:18:24.079
And if not, let's do something about that.

00:18:24.319 --> 00:18:28.400
And I want to live for your favor and your eyes only.

00:18:28.559 --> 00:18:35.200
I will woke up today recognizing that your eyes, you are bestowing and looking upon me with grace.

00:18:35.440 --> 00:18:37.440
And so I am living for you.

00:18:37.599 --> 00:18:39.119
May I do today well.

00:18:41.920 --> 00:18:44.640
For getting what is behind.

00:18:46.160 --> 00:18:47.599
Am I living today?

00:18:47.759 --> 00:18:50.400
Well, legacy begins with who's your audience.

00:18:50.480 --> 00:18:54.880
Then it's built in the unseen places of your life.

00:18:56.880 --> 00:19:04.400
It's not built outside of us, it's not built in the spectacular, it's surely not built on TikTok.

00:19:05.680 --> 00:19:06.640
Instagram.

00:19:09.599 --> 00:19:12.400
Notice what's said of Noah.

00:19:13.839 --> 00:19:16.400
Noah was a righteous man.

00:19:17.200 --> 00:19:22.960
Blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.

00:19:23.440 --> 00:19:26.319
Righteousness means right standing with God.

00:19:26.880 --> 00:19:37.279
Blameless has the idea of integrity before people, walked with God, has this life marked with the closeness and intimacy relationship with.

00:19:43.200 --> 00:19:47.440
Now, when we hear the word righteous, what we often think is perfect.

00:19:48.240 --> 00:19:53.680
Righteousness here does not mean perfection, it does mean right standing.

00:19:53.839 --> 00:20:00.559
And if I am in Christ because of his finished work, I have right standing with God as a result.

00:20:00.720 --> 00:20:03.119
When he's talking about Noah's like, he wasn't perfect.

00:20:03.519 --> 00:20:07.359
In fact, we see some things that he messed up, especially near the end of his life.

00:20:07.599 --> 00:20:11.279
It doesn't mean perfection, what it does mean is integrity.

00:20:12.640 --> 00:20:14.559
It means integrity.

00:20:16.400 --> 00:20:19.119
It's who you are when no one's watching.

00:20:19.759 --> 00:20:24.720
Are you the same person in public as you are in private?

00:20:27.119 --> 00:20:34.559
You know, uh pastors' kids get kind of a bad rap because uh they can kind of tend to go off the deep end, so I'm told.

00:20:34.880 --> 00:20:37.279
I grew up, I'm a pastor's kid.

00:20:39.680 --> 00:20:58.559
I would say one of the things that was incredibly foundational and formational to my faith, having a dad who spoke for a living on stage, was that he was the same man on that stage as he was at home.

00:20:59.759 --> 00:21:01.519
That's integrity.

00:21:03.119 --> 00:21:15.359
Parents, dads, moms, that we're the same person with their friends, we're the same person when we're in public, we're the same person that's posting online as we are in home, in our homes.

00:21:19.599 --> 00:21:21.519
I can say this about my dad.

00:21:21.599 --> 00:21:25.440
He is one of the most integral people I've ever met.

00:21:28.640 --> 00:21:34.480
Legacy is built in the unseen places of our lives.

00:21:36.640 --> 00:21:57.119
Integrity, by the way, I think for us dads, it's getting to the point where we I think this is so important and powerful that we just with our kids go, you know what, I blew it.

00:22:00.559 --> 00:22:01.680
I'm sorry.

00:22:02.880 --> 00:22:05.119
Would you please forgive me?

00:22:06.640 --> 00:22:08.160
That's integrity.

00:22:08.480 --> 00:22:17.200
Perfection pretends like nothing's wrong and you ignore it or you just mask it or you wipe it away, cover it, put it under the rug.

00:22:18.480 --> 00:22:20.000
Integrity says, you know what?

00:22:20.079 --> 00:22:22.079
And our kids need to hear it, our kids need to see it.

00:22:22.160 --> 00:22:22.720
I blew it.

00:22:22.799 --> 00:22:23.359
I'm so sorry.

00:22:23.519 --> 00:22:25.839
Would you please forgive me?

00:22:26.240 --> 00:22:32.960
I like how Dao's Lord says the most important thing in your life is not what you do, it's who you become.

00:22:34.559 --> 00:22:38.480
That's what you'll take in eternity.

00:22:39.920 --> 00:22:40.880
And we know this.

00:22:41.599 --> 00:22:47.279
Why this is so important to legacy is you cannot pass on what you do not possess.

00:22:49.039 --> 00:22:54.079
We cannot pass on a vibrant faith if we're not walking with God.

00:22:56.799 --> 00:23:06.880
We can't pass on a life of integrity unless we're walking and experiencing and living a life of integrity.

00:23:09.279 --> 00:23:10.400
Legacy.

00:23:10.960 --> 00:23:12.880
It begins with who's your audience?

00:23:13.119 --> 00:23:13.920
Audience of one.

00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:16.720
Okay, I am living for the favor of God.

00:23:16.960 --> 00:23:19.119
He's already got grace eyes for me.

00:23:19.279 --> 00:23:24.880
It's built in the unseen places of my life.

00:23:25.119 --> 00:23:35.039
Inviting him into those areas that who I am in public and in private, who I am when nobody's watching, that's what matters most, by the way.

00:23:37.440 --> 00:23:41.519
It's the decisions you make in obscurity that will shape your destiny.

00:23:44.319 --> 00:23:48.480
And we try to hide it, think it's not a big deal, and pretend to be someone else.

00:23:48.799 --> 00:23:53.680
And it undermines our lives and those we pass on.

00:23:54.079 --> 00:23:55.839
And then legacy, this is so important.

00:23:56.559 --> 00:23:59.359
Legacy is a byproduct, don't miss that.

00:23:59.599 --> 00:24:04.880
It's a byproduct of faithful obedience.

00:24:08.000 --> 00:24:12.000
It's a result of faithful obedience.

00:24:12.319 --> 00:24:21.200
Eugene Peterson, who wrote uh the message paraphrase of the Bible, he wrote a book also called a long obedience in the same direction.

00:24:22.880 --> 00:24:25.440
It's simply a long obedience.

00:24:25.680 --> 00:24:33.440
You'll see Genesis 6, 22, Noah did everything just as the Lord commanded him.

00:24:33.759 --> 00:24:35.519
Just as God commanded him.

00:24:35.680 --> 00:24:37.839
And we see this repeated throughout the lifetime.

00:24:37.920 --> 00:24:42.079
Now think about it, he's building an ark for 50, 75 years, getting his boys.

00:24:42.240 --> 00:24:46.079
He's faithfully walking with God.

00:24:47.519 --> 00:24:50.559
In my 30s, got this advice.

00:24:50.799 --> 00:24:54.319
It was so like, it was life-changing.

00:24:55.119 --> 00:24:57.759
Um, my kids were going to school, and there was a dad.

00:24:57.920 --> 00:25:00.000
I guess they should go to school, you would know that.

00:25:00.079 --> 00:25:02.160
Uh, they're in elementary at the time.

00:25:02.960 --> 00:25:06.960
And there was a dad that I started, we started, we had kids young.

00:25:07.119 --> 00:25:08.160
He started late.

00:25:08.240 --> 00:25:12.079
I know I don't want to guess how old he was, but he was old, older than me.

00:25:12.160 --> 00:25:16.160
Uh at least 20, it seems like at least 20 years older than me.

00:25:16.400 --> 00:25:18.960
Um, but he he was wise.

00:25:20.319 --> 00:25:28.240
You see, uh, I was really wrestling, especially in my 30s, 20s, like the sense of adventure, new beginnings, all these things was happening.

00:25:28.400 --> 00:25:31.039
Uh 30s, like I had this ambition.

00:25:32.000 --> 00:25:34.960
I want to conquer the world, I want to be somebody.

00:25:35.359 --> 00:25:39.200
If you wanted to ask me about legacy, it was about accomplishments.

00:25:40.480 --> 00:25:44.079
It's about what I do, the name that I make.

00:25:46.880 --> 00:25:57.279
And then, like, we're in this season of elementary school kids, and if I'm honest, it just felt like groundhog day.

00:25:58.240 --> 00:26:02.640
Wake up, get the kids ready, it's kind of a hassle.

00:26:03.039 --> 00:26:15.759
You get them off to school, you work, you come home, you get them, you know, school, homework, bed time, you wrestle with them trying to get them to bed.

00:26:16.079 --> 00:26:22.799
You maybe do some more work, go to sleep, wake up, get them ready for school.

00:26:23.279 --> 00:26:25.279
It's just like on repeat.

00:26:26.640 --> 00:26:28.319
Like, is this life?

00:26:29.440 --> 00:26:36.480
And so many of us in the middle of that have this wonder lust that can shipwreck our lives.

00:26:37.119 --> 00:26:44.079
And he said this to me he said, Ryan, you have to learn to love the mundanity.

00:26:45.200 --> 00:26:46.240
Like the what?

00:26:46.960 --> 00:26:48.319
The mundanity.

00:26:49.839 --> 00:26:52.640
Or another way to say it, embrace the mundane.

00:26:54.880 --> 00:26:59.039
I remember telling Jenny about this, and she did not like that at all.

00:26:59.200 --> 00:27:01.039
She doesn't like anything mundane.

00:27:01.119 --> 00:27:03.039
She's a seven on the Enneagram.

00:27:03.440 --> 00:27:11.519
And she's like, mundane, mundane means ordinary, routine, or lacking excitement related to everyday or common things.

00:27:11.759 --> 00:27:15.279
Legacy is a byproduct of everydayness.

00:27:18.720 --> 00:27:19.839
Where's the spice?

00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:21.359
Where's the adventure?

00:27:25.440 --> 00:27:28.640
You want to leave, we want to leave a legacy that lasts.

00:27:28.720 --> 00:27:30.480
It is just daily showing up.

00:27:31.519 --> 00:27:38.960
And sometimes it's, you know, two steps forward, one step back, and sometimes, if we're honest, it's two steps back, one step forward.

00:27:39.279 --> 00:27:41.039
But it's daily showing up.

00:27:41.119 --> 00:27:42.400
It's just going, you know what?

00:27:42.480 --> 00:27:51.039
It's not that spectacular, it's not sexy, they're not gonna make a movie about it unless it's perhaps the notebook, then that's kind of talking about the dailiness of it.

00:27:51.119 --> 00:27:57.440
But everything else, it's not gonna show up somewhere, but it's gonna show up in your kid's life.

00:27:58.880 --> 00:28:18.880
Because now I have an almost 21-year-old, an 18-year-old, and a 15-year-old, and I'm so grateful for that embracing the mundane of just showing up in the middle of it, of not just kind of copping out or just searching for something else, but being present to what God has in this moment, in this time, and you're just gonna show up and be faithful where you're at.

00:28:20.079 --> 00:28:23.279
That is a legacy that lasts.

00:28:24.799 --> 00:28:26.000
And here's why.

00:28:28.720 --> 00:28:30.160
More's caught than taught.

00:28:31.200 --> 00:28:32.000
We know it.

00:28:32.559 --> 00:28:34.000
More's caught than taught.

00:28:36.799 --> 00:28:38.960
It's not that great speech.

00:28:43.680 --> 00:28:48.079
It's the lives we live that our kids will take from us.

00:28:52.240 --> 00:28:56.480
I watch my mom every morning.

00:28:57.680 --> 00:28:59.039
Wake up early.

00:29:00.480 --> 00:29:03.599
Sit on the couch that none of us kids were allowed to sit on.

00:29:03.759 --> 00:29:05.119
It was in the living room.

00:29:08.400 --> 00:29:11.599
And she spent time with Jesus every morning.

00:29:12.400 --> 00:29:14.160
Got her cup of coffee.

00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:16.640
Every morning.

00:29:16.720 --> 00:29:22.240
I'd wake up early, not because I was getting up, I just had to use the bathroom, was going back, but I'd just see her every morning.

00:29:22.400 --> 00:29:25.920
And I saw that everydainess of her life.

00:29:26.160 --> 00:29:26.880
And guess what?

00:29:26.960 --> 00:29:28.720
I do every day.

00:29:29.039 --> 00:29:30.559
Because more's caught than taught.

00:29:30.720 --> 00:29:33.279
Her dailiness bled into my life.

00:29:34.240 --> 00:29:37.839
Her faithfulness poured into my faith.

00:29:39.440 --> 00:29:41.279
How do we leave a legacy that lasts?

00:29:41.440 --> 00:29:43.519
It begins with who our audience is.

00:29:48.960 --> 00:29:52.240
It's built in the unseen places of our life.

00:29:55.119 --> 00:29:56.559
It's a byproduct.

00:29:57.599 --> 00:30:01.039
It's a byproduct of just faithful obedience.

00:30:01.359 --> 00:30:02.319
Mundanity.

00:30:02.559 --> 00:30:04.640
You can use that word this week.

00:30:06.000 --> 00:30:09.440
Noah closes, they get off the ark, and it closes with a covenant.

00:30:09.599 --> 00:30:11.440
God makes a covenant with Noah.

00:30:12.480 --> 00:30:15.200
He makes a covenant not just with Noah but with the earth.

00:30:15.359 --> 00:30:25.440
He says, I'll set a rainbow in the clouds, and it'll be a sign of a covenant between me and the earth that never again will I bring destruction upon the earth in this way.

00:30:25.680 --> 00:30:29.359
In fact, we'll see and read through Genesis that God makes covenants.

00:30:29.519 --> 00:30:34.240
A covenant is a promise that he makes regardless of how we live and what we do.

00:30:34.400 --> 00:30:36.240
This is what I'm gonna do.

00:30:36.960 --> 00:30:45.599
We'll see him make a covenant with Abraham, and that through his family line, every nation will be blessed, and the coming Messiah will bring salvation.

00:30:45.839 --> 00:30:48.559
The rainbow, by the way, the bow was a weapon of war.

00:30:48.720 --> 00:30:51.359
God's saying, I'm setting down my weapon of war.

00:30:54.880 --> 00:31:02.720
I love, I love that we have a covenant-keeping God.

00:31:03.359 --> 00:31:05.680
I've shared this with some of you before.

00:31:05.920 --> 00:31:10.640
One of my favorite attributes of God is his faithfulness.

00:31:11.200 --> 00:31:14.079
I don't even know if it's legal to have a favorite attribute.

00:31:14.160 --> 00:31:14.640
I'm not sure.

00:31:14.720 --> 00:31:16.559
I'm still trying to figure that one out.

00:31:17.119 --> 00:31:18.079
But it is.

00:31:19.920 --> 00:31:20.400
It is.

00:31:20.480 --> 00:31:22.000
And here's the reason why.

00:31:22.160 --> 00:31:26.160
Like I wake up most mornings and I write lamentations in my journal.

00:31:26.400 --> 00:31:31.599
The steadfast love of the Lord never fails never fails.

00:31:33.119 --> 00:31:35.920
His mercies are new every morning.

00:31:36.160 --> 00:31:37.680
Great is his faithfulness.

00:31:37.839 --> 00:31:41.680
Like I woke up today to new morning mercy.

00:31:41.839 --> 00:31:46.240
His steadfast love greets me because he's faithful.

00:31:48.480 --> 00:31:56.079
I gotta tell you, in my twenties, thirties, even sometimes now.

00:31:58.559 --> 00:32:00.240
Like imposter syndrome?

00:32:00.559 --> 00:32:01.599
Absolutely.

00:32:05.279 --> 00:32:09.200
Like just wondering, am I gonna make it?

00:32:10.559 --> 00:32:15.039
Not like be a somebody, just make it in life, period.

00:32:15.279 --> 00:32:16.640
Am I just gonna make it?

00:32:16.799 --> 00:32:18.960
I'm just trying to eat by, get by.

00:32:19.039 --> 00:32:22.160
I'm not sure if I can really get through this.

00:32:22.240 --> 00:32:23.920
And then I come to Colossians.

00:32:24.160 --> 00:32:27.599
This is the anchor verse, especially in my 20s.

00:32:28.000 --> 00:32:36.079
He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it until the day of Lord, our Lord Jesus Christ.

00:32:36.400 --> 00:32:40.400
Like, I don't know if I'm gonna make it, but you're a covenant-keeping God.

00:32:40.480 --> 00:32:43.359
You said you began in me, you'll finish.

00:32:43.519 --> 00:32:45.599
And so I don't see how it's working out right now.

00:32:45.680 --> 00:32:51.359
And I'm just trusting, I'm just clinging, I'm just hoping because I'm confident in you, not in me.

00:32:51.920 --> 00:32:53.519
And just hold on to that.

00:32:53.680 --> 00:32:55.519
You're faithful, you'll complete it.

00:32:55.599 --> 00:32:58.000
What you began, you'll finish in me.

00:32:58.160 --> 00:33:00.400
But what about when I doubt, when I struggle?

00:33:00.640 --> 00:33:02.079
2 Timothy.

00:33:02.400 --> 00:33:07.519
Even when we're faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.

00:33:08.240 --> 00:33:17.599
This is why you need to know God's word, because you need to be able to get your heart and mind anchored in the very promises of God.

00:33:19.519 --> 00:33:21.359
What about when you blow it?

00:33:21.599 --> 00:33:22.960
1 John 1 9.

00:33:23.039 --> 00:33:33.599
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and forgive us and purify us of all unrighteousness.

00:33:41.279 --> 00:33:52.640
You have a promise keeping God who is faithful, who has grace eyes for you.

00:33:57.759 --> 00:33:59.519
Legacy feels overwhelming, doesn't it?

00:33:59.599 --> 00:34:00.880
It feels daunting.

00:34:01.440 --> 00:34:04.720
Maybe you're a teen and you're like, I'm too young for this.

00:34:06.160 --> 00:34:08.400
Maybe you're older.

00:34:08.800 --> 00:34:10.400
I'm too late for this.

00:34:12.639 --> 00:34:14.239
It's never too late.

00:34:15.519 --> 00:34:21.039
And you're never too young to leave a legacy that lasts.

00:34:22.079 --> 00:34:23.679
We all leave a legacy.

00:34:23.920 --> 00:34:25.280
The question is, what kind?

00:34:25.679 --> 00:34:26.880
What will it be?

00:34:30.559 --> 00:34:38.320
When I was 19, there was a man that shaped my life profoundly.

00:34:38.400 --> 00:34:39.599
His name's Will.

00:34:39.840 --> 00:34:41.119
He was an old vet.

00:34:44.239 --> 00:34:47.360
Will was a prayer warrior in our church in Santa Cruz.

00:34:47.519 --> 00:34:57.519
Um older man, lived in a small uh little um what do you call those things?

00:34:57.679 --> 00:34:58.960
A mobile home.

00:34:59.280 --> 00:35:04.000
His wife had passed away several years before.

00:35:04.400 --> 00:35:06.079
So he just prayed.

00:35:06.800 --> 00:35:11.760
He had Parkinson's and the disease was taking over his body.

00:35:12.960 --> 00:35:19.199
And he just, for whatever reason, began to pour into this little 19-year-old life.

00:35:20.000 --> 00:35:26.719
Invite me over, I'd go over and spend some time at his mobile home and hear stories of his life.

00:35:27.440 --> 00:35:30.159
He would email me, remember emails?

00:35:31.199 --> 00:35:37.039
But he could he, you know, could only do single finger, so all his emails were all caps.

00:35:37.119 --> 00:35:40.559
He just had it on all caps, he didn't have some of the great technology today.

00:35:41.039 --> 00:35:43.119
He'd send me these prayers.

00:35:45.440 --> 00:35:47.760
He'd end every single one of them.

00:35:48.800 --> 00:35:51.840
In the sounds of Calvary's love.

00:35:52.719 --> 00:35:57.519
Well, and then he passed away.

00:35:59.840 --> 00:36:02.960
It's just a couple years in my life.

00:36:04.480 --> 00:36:12.559
His prayers, his presence profoundly impacted my life.

00:36:13.920 --> 00:36:20.639
He may have passed away, but God is still answering his prayers to this day.

00:36:22.000 --> 00:36:24.159
It's never too late.

00:36:24.639 --> 00:36:31.760
And by the way, you're never too young to leave the legacy.

00:36:33.599 --> 00:36:38.480
So I want to just give you a moment.

00:36:40.000 --> 00:36:42.239
Just to be with your Heavenly Father.

00:36:50.960 --> 00:36:54.639
So disapproval.

00:36:55.679 --> 00:36:56.480
Who are you living?

00:37:01.440 --> 00:37:02.719
Just bring it to you.

00:37:03.840 --> 00:37:04.800
Bring it to you.

00:37:05.440 --> 00:37:06.960
Bring what's in you.

00:37:07.519 --> 00:37:09.039
Let him meet you.

00:37:09.280 --> 00:37:11.119
Let him minister to you.

00:37:12.000 --> 00:37:13.519
Not what ought to be in you.

00:37:15.840 --> 00:37:17.360
In Jesus' name.

00:37:24.320 --> 00:37:26.639
We hope you are blessed by this message.
