seven other cows, ugly and gaunt, came up out of the Nile and stood beside those on the riverbank. 00:01:10.879 --> 00:01:15.920 And the cows that were ugly and gaunt ate up the seven sleek fat cows. chief baker in the house of the captain of the guard. 00:02:04.879 --> 00:02:09.919 Each of us had a dream that same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own. 00:02:10.159 --> 00:02:19.520 Now a young Hebrew, say Joseph, very good, was there, a servant of the captain of the guard. 00:02:19.759 --> 00:02:26.319 We told him our dreams and interpreted them for us, giving each man the interpretation of his dream. 00:02:26.960 --> 00:02:30.960 And things turned out exactly as he interpreted them. 00:02:31.439 --> 00:02:36.000 I was restored to my position, and the other man was impaled. 00:02:36.400 --> 00:02:40.719 So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon. 00:02:40.879 --> 00:02:46.400 And when he was brought from the dungeon, he shaved, changed his clothes, and he came before Pharaoh. 00:02:46.800 --> 00:02:52.639 Pharaoh said to Joseph, I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. 00:02:52.879 --> 00:02:59.199 But I have heard it said that when you have a you can hear a dream, you can interpret it. 00:02:59.840 --> 00:03:00.400 Pause. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:17.680 Betrayed by his brothers, falsely accused of rape in the prison, where each time he kind of works hard and becomes the head of something. 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:22.159 And then they forget after he interprets the dreams, it's been two years. 00:03:22.479 --> 00:03:23.439 This is his moment. 00:03:23.599 --> 00:03:24.879 Here's the question. 00:03:25.439 --> 00:03:30.159 How does Joseph respond when opportunity knocks? 00:03:30.479 --> 00:03:37.520 And the second question is how will you and how will I respond when opportunity knocks? 00:03:37.919 --> 00:03:45.680 As I was thinking about this, and by the way, we're gonna get back into the text just a minute, but I thought of seasons where you know you have an opportunity. 00:03:45.840 --> 00:03:51.280 I had probably was a month before I graduated from college, and I was a very slow starter. 00:03:51.439 --> 00:03:56.000 I didn't grow up as a follower of Christ, but I trusted Christ right before I went away to college. 00:03:56.240 --> 00:03:58.240 By this time, I'm in God's Word every day. 00:03:58.319 --> 00:04:00.479 I'm in a small group Bible study. 00:04:00.719 --> 00:04:06.879 I really came to the point where I believed that God was good, but I didn't know what to do after college. 00:04:06.960 --> 00:04:09.039 So opportunity, big decision. 00:04:09.360 --> 00:04:14.159 And so uh I got to the point where, Lord, I'll do whatever you want me to do. 00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:17.759 And you know, I was pretty idealistic and thought, how do you really help people? 00:04:17.839 --> 00:04:19.199 You know, Jesus, help people. 00:04:19.279 --> 00:04:24.720 So I called my sister and I majored in a bunch of different things, changed my major about five or six times. 00:04:24.800 --> 00:04:31.680 So I had sort of the whole liberal arts side of it, and then I had the whole other side if I wanted to go into medicine or something. 00:04:31.839 --> 00:04:36.560 And so I called my sister who's a nurse, and I said, Punky, I'm praying and thinking about being a doctor. 00:04:36.720 --> 00:04:37.839 What do you think? 00:04:38.879 --> 00:04:44.959 She said, Um, Chip, when I even talk about blood, you can't handle it. 00:04:45.120 --> 00:04:46.639 You'd be a terrible doctor. 00:04:46.800 --> 00:04:52.959 And so that was really good because I thought I don't want four more years of school and internships and all the rest. 00:04:53.199 --> 00:05:00.160 And so I thought, you know, I'm not sure, but I know coaches are the ones that really, really influenced my life. 00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:06.240 My dad was absent because he was an alcoholic and very functioning, but just disconnected from family. 00:05:06.399 --> 00:05:07.519 So I thought, great. 00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:15.680 So I became a teacher and coached basketball and loved it, and it was great, and sort of got to play all around the world. 00:05:15.839 --> 00:05:18.079 But that idea of more schooling was like. 00:05:19.199 --> 00:05:26.560 And yet, what I realized a little bit later, I love coaching, but I wanted to be a major college coach. 00:05:26.720 --> 00:05:31.519 So I wanted, for some of you that are older, Bobby Knight was a famous coach in Indiana. 00:05:31.680 --> 00:05:32.800 I wanted his job. 00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:35.199 I grew up in Ohio, or maybe Coach Z. 00:05:35.439 --> 00:05:38.560 Or I mean, I wanted to be a great program, be a great coach. 00:05:38.720 --> 00:05:44.560 And I'd done it in high school, and I actually was pretty good, and our teams won, and I loved meeting with the players. 00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:46.480 So I had to go back to school. 00:05:46.720 --> 00:05:53.040 Two years of graduate school, West Virginia University, and uh said, okay, well, if you have to go to school to be a coach, great. 00:05:53.920 --> 00:05:54.959 Another opportunity. 00:05:55.600 --> 00:05:59.120 While I traveled around the world playing basketball, God tapped me on the shoulder. 00:05:59.839 --> 00:06:01.759 He brought this beautiful woman into my life. 00:06:02.079 --> 00:06:05.199 We got married and said, I want you to coach my team. 00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:10.800 The only problem is that you don't really, you know, the Bible personally, but you need training. 00:06:11.759 --> 00:06:14.959 So I went to seminary, it meant four more years. 00:06:15.680 --> 00:06:16.959 Oh my gosh. 00:06:17.279 --> 00:06:25.360 Well, the good news is I squeezed that four-year program into five, and uh, your lead pastor Ryan came along during that time. 00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:27.759 And so a lot of good things came. 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:34.079 But what I learned was whether you have to have a lot of school or little school, because it's really different. 00:06:34.319 --> 00:06:39.279 Some of the most successful people I know, college was even too boring, didn't go. 00:06:39.759 --> 00:06:43.279 But whether it's a little or a lot, here's what I want to tell you. 00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:46.959 You never graduate from God's school of faith. 00:06:47.279 --> 00:06:52.240 You're in a school all the time, and he has certain things he wants to teach us. 00:06:52.319 --> 00:06:54.319 So open, open your notes if you will. 00:06:54.399 --> 00:06:55.759 I think it's gonna be real helpful. 00:06:55.920 --> 00:07:13.040 I want to give us a context about God's school of faith because what we're gonna find out is that if you're not prepared, if you don't stay up and kind of pass his tests like Joseph passed, um, you won't respond in the right way when he brings that opportunity. 00:07:13.279 --> 00:07:16.079 And so let me just give you an understanding of God's school. 00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:17.519 There's four basic objectives. 00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:21.360 Objective number one in God's school of faith is to know him personally. 00:07:22.399 --> 00:07:32.319 I mean, he wants every single person to actually understand that he loves them, he's forgiven them, he's risen from the dead, and you can have a personal relationship. 00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:36.720 His last prayer in John 17, he said, this is eternal life. 00:07:36.879 --> 00:07:39.120 It's not just something that lasts a long time. 00:07:39.279 --> 00:07:43.199 It's to know you, Heavenly Father, and Jesus Christ whom you sent. 00:07:43.279 --> 00:07:47.519 And that word know is a deep, personal, rich relationship. 00:07:47.759 --> 00:07:53.360 So God's number one objective is first we come to know him, and then actually that's the big objective. 00:07:53.519 --> 00:07:58.160 Whether you're two or 72, that we keep getting to know him better and better. 00:07:58.399 --> 00:08:02.560 The second objective in God's school of faith is to develop our character. 00:08:02.800 --> 00:08:10.240 In Romans 8, 29, after 28, it says that God uses all these circumstances and people for good. 00:08:10.399 --> 00:08:13.759 The good is to conform us to the image of his son. 00:08:14.240 --> 00:08:21.040 So, so the big program is not so much that you're religious or you don't do this, you start this. 00:08:21.199 --> 00:08:26.319 The goal is God is about making you more and more like Jesus. 00:08:26.480 --> 00:08:27.519 But like practically. 00:08:27.600 --> 00:08:48.799 So you would drive your car the way Jesus would drive your car if he was inside your car, that you would use your money the way Jesus would use your money if he was inside of you, that you would treat poor people the way Jesus treated poor people, that if God gave you a lot of big things, you would treat it as a stewardship and not think it's all about you. 00:08:49.039 --> 00:09:03.200 In other words, in every area of your life, God in this school of faith is to help you and me, little by little by little, to act and think and feel because actually Jesus lives inside of us. 00:09:03.360 --> 00:09:05.120 So that's a big part of the agenda. 00:09:05.279 --> 00:09:13.919 The third objective in God's school of faith is to use us to fulfill his kingdom agenda in this world. 00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:28.639 Uh, in Ephesians 2.10, uh, after talking about this miraculous, loving, amazing grace and forgiveness of God, he says, You, each one of us, are God's workmanship or poem or masterpiece. 00:09:28.799 --> 00:09:37.120 And that God has prepared for you and for me, every single person who knows Jesus personally, he actually has a good work. 00:09:37.840 --> 00:09:41.919 He has a purpose, something that only you can fulfill. 00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:44.240 Something from the foundations of the earth. 00:09:44.480 --> 00:09:50.559 It'll take into account your family of origin, your natural talents, your spiritual gifts, circumstances. 00:09:50.720 --> 00:09:56.080 And he has something that only you can do in a way that only you could do it. 00:09:56.320 --> 00:09:59.440 And so he wants you to discover it and he wants to use you. 00:09:59.679 --> 00:10:05.600 He wants his kingdom to come, right, and his will to be done on earth the way it happens in heaven. 00:10:05.840 --> 00:10:19.120 And that's where people get loved, and people experience kindness and uh people get their needs met, and you become a conduit literally of the very life of Jesus for other people. 00:10:19.360 --> 00:10:31.919 And then finally, uh objective number four, and I love this part of it, is to give us inexpressible joy, supernatural peace, and unconditional love in the process. 00:10:32.080 --> 00:10:38.799 So this isn't like God has some plan and you get this job, and okay, it's gonna be really hard, and you know, just buckle up. 00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:45.279 Jesus said, This is the very last night in John 15, he goes, guys, look, I know I'm leaving, it's gonna be better for you. 00:10:45.440 --> 00:10:50.399 The Holy Spirit's gonna come, he's gonna live in you, and all you need to do, just stay connected to me. 00:10:50.639 --> 00:10:52.639 Abide in me, abide in my word. 00:10:52.960 --> 00:10:54.240 Um, just follow. 00:10:54.399 --> 00:10:56.159 And he says, Here's the deal. 00:10:56.399 --> 00:11:04.559 These things I've spoken to you about my relationship with you, so that my joy will be in you, and that your joy will be made full. 00:11:04.799 --> 00:11:06.879 That it ups and downs and struggles. 00:11:07.039 --> 00:11:09.440 I want you to know there's this connection with me. 00:11:09.600 --> 00:11:14.000 I want you to have that joy that overcomes whatever you face. 00:11:14.320 --> 00:11:18.080 And then in verse 12, he says, Greater love has no one than this. 00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:21.039 That one lay down his life for his friend. 00:11:21.279 --> 00:11:22.960 And of course, he would do that. 00:11:23.200 --> 00:11:30.559 And then what we know of the eleven apostles who heard this at the time, 10 of them would give their life for others. 00:11:30.879 --> 00:11:33.919 And then he went on to say, you know, about friends. 00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:37.600 He said, No longer did I call you slaves, I call you friends. 00:11:37.759 --> 00:11:41.519 For all things the Father has been made known to me, I've made known to you. 00:11:42.480 --> 00:11:44.320 He didn't choose me, I choose you. 00:11:45.600 --> 00:11:46.720 That you could be with me. 00:11:47.039 --> 00:11:48.320 And then he gives them a command. 00:11:48.399 --> 00:11:51.200 Now I want you to love each other the way I've loved you. 00:11:51.360 --> 00:11:59.039 And in Jesus' mindset, loving him means obeying him, so that those first three objectives become a reality. 00:11:59.279 --> 00:12:09.440 And so the principle that I've learned after these many decades, and I was just realizing at the last service, is I I met Jesus a little over 50 years ago. 00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:17.600 And this agenda, this school of faith, it just keeps, you know, it keeps playing itself out. 00:12:17.919 --> 00:12:25.039 And the principle I've learned is that God must work deeply in us before he works significantly through us. 00:12:25.919 --> 00:12:32.159 Life is so much more than what you accomplish and what you get to do, or doing this for people. 00:12:32.879 --> 00:12:38.480 This idea, this game plan is that God wants to work in you. 00:12:38.799 --> 00:12:46.799 He wants to shape your character and your attitudes and your life, and most of all to have you and me connected very, very deeply. 00:12:47.600 --> 00:12:49.279 What he longs is for a relationship. 00:12:50.080 --> 00:12:56.080 He wants to enjoy you and love you, and then produce that as an overflow of your life. 00:12:56.240 --> 00:13:01.440 And so Joseph is like an amazing case study of how that works. 00:13:01.600 --> 00:13:15.679 Uh, last week uh Ryan shared sort of the journey God takes us on that is anything but a straight line, and he talked about the zigzag curriculum of God, and you can see on the on the screen here, you know, this is this was God's role. 00:13:15.840 --> 00:13:21.759 Those four objectives were for Joseph, for Moses, for David, for you, for me, for Paul, for everyone. 00:13:21.919 --> 00:13:23.919 God's agenda, it's exactly the same. 00:13:24.080 --> 00:13:26.240 And this is the way it usually happens. 00:13:26.480 --> 00:13:30.000 You know, it's you think, God, I'm following you. 00:13:30.240 --> 00:13:31.440 You mean it's not easy? 00:13:31.600 --> 00:13:35.600 You mean if I believe and I walk by faith and I'm obedient? 00:13:35.919 --> 00:13:36.240 No. 00:13:36.639 --> 00:13:42.080 For Joseph, it started at 17 and he ends up in a pit betrayed by his brothers. 00:13:42.399 --> 00:14:02.000 Then he rises and he's a slave, and as a slave, he's faithful and obedient, and he refuses to sleep with the guy's wife, and so he gets falsely accused, and then he ends up in jail, and you know, he's he has a great attitude and uses his gifts, and pretty soon he's supervising the jail, he interprets some dreams, and then they forget him. 00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:05.600 I mean, imagine, let's not make this a Bible story. 00:14:07.120 --> 00:14:12.240 Imagine having a dream in your heart, something you're sure God spoke to you about. 00:14:13.600 --> 00:14:14.639 And it's like, really? 00:14:16.559 --> 00:14:18.559 I'm like, when is this gonna happen? 00:14:19.360 --> 00:14:20.559 I mean, how long? 00:14:21.360 --> 00:14:27.919 I mean, think think of back for some of you are 17, and some of you can remember what it was like to be 17. 00:14:28.159 --> 00:14:37.120 I mean, 17 to 30 is like I'm I'm thinking there's some days where he thought, maybe I should have just slept with his wife, things would have gone better. 00:14:37.360 --> 00:14:38.720 You know, God, I feel lost. 00:14:38.879 --> 00:14:40.639 I feel like you've abandoned me. 00:14:41.200 --> 00:14:44.000 But by the grace of God, he remains faithful. 00:14:44.240 --> 00:14:50.399 And what you're gonna find is that as you trace his life, there's certain tests that God gives to him. 00:14:50.559 --> 00:14:59.279 And by the way, this case study of his life, every test that Joseph has, you and I following Jesus will have the same tests. 00:14:59.519 --> 00:15:01.919 And by the way, here's what's different, right? 00:15:02.159 --> 00:15:11.200 In in school, whether it's high school or college or graduate school, or you know, you take tests in your business and your life at work. 00:15:11.759 --> 00:15:13.840 God's tests are different. 00:15:14.159 --> 00:15:18.480 His desire is that everyone gets an A on every test. 00:15:18.799 --> 00:15:20.639 In other words, he wants you to pass. 00:15:20.879 --> 00:15:22.960 I mean, he wants to give you the answers. 00:15:23.120 --> 00:15:30.960 I want you to pass, because as you pass, those objectives get really fulfilled in your life and through your life. 00:15:31.039 --> 00:15:33.679 So I just I just gave you the kind of the list of tests. 00:15:33.759 --> 00:15:40.159 And in chapter 37, Joseph has the test of the family of origin, and so will you, and so did I. 00:15:40.320 --> 00:15:44.559 Some of you came from really great, wonderful homes, and some from really challenging homes. 00:15:44.720 --> 00:15:48.399 Here's the deal: your dad and mom weren't Jesus. 00:15:48.639 --> 00:16:01.840 So they weren't perfect, so that means they had issues and they passed on their issues to you, and my parents passed on my issues, as Ryan will tell you, and he will pass them on to his kids. 00:16:03.840 --> 00:16:09.360 The family of origin test is to know your family of origin shapes you. 00:16:09.519 --> 00:16:11.440 It doesn't have to define you. 00:16:11.759 --> 00:16:21.120 God has a bigger plan, and he'll use even the challenges from your childhood when you turn to him and trust him to do some of the best and biggest things. 00:16:21.279 --> 00:16:24.320 The second is the morality test, chapter 39. 00:16:25.120 --> 00:16:27.279 He's sexually tempted and he runs. 00:16:27.440 --> 00:16:28.799 He passes the test. 00:16:29.600 --> 00:16:30.879 Mark this down. 00:16:31.840 --> 00:16:39.360 Sexual purity is a prerequisite to experience God's power, to hear his voice, and to know his way. 00:16:39.919 --> 00:16:41.039 Let me say that again. 00:16:41.200 --> 00:16:48.080 Sexual purity is a prerequisite for experiencing God's power and for hearing his voice. 00:16:48.559 --> 00:16:53.200 Sex outside of a marriage relationship is a false intimacy. 00:16:53.440 --> 00:17:01.759 And whether it's through pornography or whether it's sleeping around or whatever form, God wants higher and God wants better. 00:17:02.080 --> 00:17:07.200 And the world wants to suck us into a process and a journey. 00:17:07.519 --> 00:17:13.440 God says, I need you to be sexually pure so that you can hear my voice. 00:17:13.839 --> 00:17:24.960 There's nothing worse than living one foot in the world and one foot, you know, with following God and that tension and that guilt that just keeps coming up and down. 00:17:25.680 --> 00:17:27.920 So God says, that's a test we need to pass. 00:17:28.400 --> 00:17:30.640 The third test is the identity test. 00:17:31.200 --> 00:17:37.440 You know, he's an entitled sort of, I'm better than anyone else with his brothers and gets rejected. 00:17:37.599 --> 00:17:42.400 Then he becomes a slave, and then he becomes a convicted rapist. 00:17:42.799 --> 00:17:48.720 And each time he had to pass the identity test, people will label you. 00:17:49.119 --> 00:17:56.319 They'll label you at work, they'll label you in your community, you grow up and they'll label you, I'm with you, and I don't care what anybody else says, that's how I see you. 00:18:19.359 --> 00:18:23.440 And the identity test is learning to see yourself the way God sees you. 00:18:23.599 --> 00:19:15.440 And then there's the preparation test, and that's what we're gonna see with Joseph. 00:19:15.920 --> 00:19:23.039 See, what you find is that all 13 years, Joseph wasn't whining and complaining that this isn't fair. 00:19:23.200 --> 00:19:25.200 Uh, why did you let me do this? 00:19:25.359 --> 00:19:26.880 Why am I still here? 00:19:27.039 --> 00:19:29.920 Uh, if you gave me that dream, why is it not happening? 00:19:30.079 --> 00:19:32.240 How come other people are doing well? 00:19:32.400 --> 00:19:42.720 And instead, the preparation test is wherever God has you, you positively lean in and say, I might want to be somewhere else. 00:19:42.880 --> 00:19:52.480 I'd like this to happen sooner, but until it does, today I'm in the center of God's will, and I will be God's man or God's woman or God's student right where I am. 00:19:52.799 --> 00:19:56.240 So do what you need to do in me and do what you want to do through me. 00:19:56.400 --> 00:19:59.440 And when gonna find as we as we read this, and some of you know the story, is that Joseph will actually interpret the dream, and then Joseph will do a number of very humble things. 00:20:14.079 --> 00:22:20.559 And then you ride in the number two chariot, and everyone's going to cheer you. 00:22:20.720 --> 00:22:31.920 And Moses is going to experience after 13 years of I'm a slave, I'm a convicted rapist, I'm a forgotten person, I'm a guy that needs a shave to even get out in front of public. 00:22:32.079 --> 00:22:43.519 He's going to be wealthy, he's going to be powerful, he's going to be successful, he's going to have position, and they're even going to throw in a wife, and he's going to have a couple kids, and he's going to name his kids, wow. 00:22:43.920 --> 00:22:48.400 God actually has caused me to forget all the pain that I've been through. 00:22:48.559 --> 00:22:54.240 And then the second kid is, God has given me favor basically beyond my wildest imagination. that brings out the impurities to see the quality of the metal. 00:23:19.920 --> 00:23:36.079 When you receive position or power or money or great esteem, and you get a lot of praise from people, how billion, he said, for every hundred people that can handle adversity and still walk with God, there's on less than one hand the people that can get great success, receive a lot of money and still walk with God. 00:23:56.240 --> 00:24:07.599 Because there's something that's seducing about power, there's something about money that it just causes you little by little, it's powerful, and you just start 00:25:57.839 I have gifts, I have an ability, I'm only a steward of them. 00:25:58.400 --> 00:26:01.759 Notice too, he's developed something called faith. 00:26:02.480 --> 00:26:09.680 He hasn't even heard the dreams, and he looks Pharaoh in the eye and says, God will reveal to you what the dreams mean. 00:26:10.799 --> 00:26:14.480 You've got to remember that, like if he's wrong, he's dead. 00:26:42.000 Then he says to Joseph, Since God has made all this known to you, therefore no one is as discerning and wise as you. 00:26:42.240 --> 00:26:51.759 You shall be in charge of my palace, all my people are submitted to your orders, but only with respect to the throne will it be greater than you. 00:26:54.880 --> 00:26:58.960 When opportunity knocks, you need to be ready. 00:26:59.200 --> 00:27:05.759 And the way we get ready is to really be prepared and understand what God is doing. 00:27:06.079 --> 00:27:17.839 He gives advice, and then after the preparation and the humility, he ends up with position, authority, wealth, wife, children, a purpose, and another huge spoiling alert. 00:27:18.160 --> 00:27:26.319 He saves not only the nation of Egypt, he saves the Israelites and all the known earth at the time. 00:27:26.480 --> 00:27:28.400 The famine is so great they come. 00:27:28.640 --> 00:27:38.079 And God uses this man in this way because for 13 years he was leaning into God's personal agenda, those objectives. 00:27:38.319 --> 00:27:45.200 And so what I want to do with the rest of our time is take some lessons from Joseph's life that are for us. 00:27:45.920 --> weekend event, and I have a friend who works for Morgan Stanley, did at the time in the finance world, and he was his financial planner, and he was sharing Christ with this guy, and we were kind of near Las Vegas, wherever we did this event, and he said, Why don't you come with me this weekend? 00:31:08.720 --> 00:31:15.440 And so they came, and this guy listened all weekend, and on Saturday I don't mean this badly, but you know, there were guns in the back of pickup trucks, all the all the youth had a big hole, a circle in the back of their jeans, and they'd carry around Coke bottles,
