SpeakerRight. The absolute worst. So you're an IT technician. You're trying to be genuinely helpful before you clock out. And you notice a server is, you know, suffering from a memory leak. It's running incredibly slowly.
Speaker 1Yeah, standard stuff.
SpeakerExactly. You know exactly how to fix it too. It's just a quick patch and a reboot. So without overthinking it, you hit restart. Oh no. Yeah. What you didn't realize is that this specific server was right in the middle of processing the entire company's automated payroll batch.
Speaker 1I'm physically cringing right now.
SpeakerI mean you should be. By rebooting it, you just corrupted the database. Yeah. And now literally nobody in the company is getting their paycheck for the weekend.
Speaker 1It is honestly the ultimate IT nightmare because I mean you had the technical skill to fix the machine, right?
SpeakerRight. The patch worked.
Speaker 1Yeah, but you completely lacked the operational awareness to protect the business.
SpeakerAnd that uh that messy intersection between technical precision and human consequence is exactly what we're covering today. So welcome to the fourth and final deep dive in our special four-part series.

Speaker 1Yeah, we have spent the last three sessions exploring all the nuts and bolts, you know, operating systems, security, troubleshooting.

Speaker 1Exactly. But this final piece of the puzzle is arguably the most crucial for your actual day-to-day career survival.
SpeakerAbsolutely. And as always, today's material is heavily based on the incredibly comprehensive study guides available at Mountain Range Medias at C Shop.
Speaker 1Which are just fantastic, by the way.
SpeakerThey really are. So the topic today is operational procedures, which uh makes up a massive 21% of your exam score. So, okay, let's unpack this.
Speaker 1Let's do it.
SpeakerOperational procedures basically cover the professionalism of IT. Like we are moving beyond just how to fix a motherboard.
Speaker 1Right, way beyond that.
SpeakerWe're getting into the rules, the safety standards, and honestly, the communication habits that separate a competent professional from a dangerous liability.
Speaker 1Because the exam tests very strict specifics here, you know, you aren't just being tested on whether a fix works.
SpeakerWhich is the trap a lot of people fall into, right?
Speaker 1Totally. The exam wants to know how you identify the best first action in tricky, multi-layered scenarios. Like can you follow the rules before, during, and after you actually touch a piece of hardware?
SpeakerYeah. And before you can fix a system safely, you really have to know how it actually works and what the rules of the house are.
Speaker 1The baseline, basically. Trevor Burrus, Jr.
SpeakerRight. The baseline. And the absolute bedrock of this baseline is your ticketing system. This is your audit trail.
Speaker 1It's everything.
SpeakerIt really is. When an issue occurs, a ticket records every single detail. Like who requested the help, the exact problem description, its severity, and then eventually the step-by-step resolution.
Speaker 1Because it is entirely about accountability. I mean, if a system goes down two weeks later, the ticketing system tells the organization exactly who touched it last.
SpeakerRight. And exactly what changes they made.
Speaker 1Exactly. But um tickets also feed into your knowledge base and your standard operating procedures or SOPs.
SpeakerThe SOPs, yeah. That's a huge exam topic.
Speaker 1Oh, massive. Because a knowledge base is essentially a searchable library of past fixes. So if the accounting department gets like the same printer error every single Tuesday.
SpeakerWhich they always do.
Speaker 1Right. You shouldn't have to reinvent the wheel every Tuesday. The SOP dictates the standardized, approved way to resolve that specific error.
SpeakerAaron Ross Powell So that every technician handles it identically. It's essentially leaving breadcrumbs for your future self. Or for the new hire who's just trying to figure out the environment.
Speaker 1I love that breadcrumbs analogy.
SpeakerThanks. And you have to pair that with robust network and asset documentation.
Speaker 1Oh yeah. You have to.
SpeakerI'm talking about keeping your topology diagrams, your IP addressing schemes, and like your hardware inventories rigorously up to date.
Speaker 1Because if you don't know what assets the company actually owns, you cannot possibly secure them.
SpeakerYou're flying blind. And then governing all of this is the AUP, the acceptable use policy.
Speaker 1Right, the AUP.
SpeakerThis is the document every employee signs when they get hired. It defines exactly what they are allowed to do on company devices and crucially the consequences for misuse.
Speaker 1What's fascinating here is that technicians often view all this documentation as just busy work. Exactly. The AUPs, the asset logs, the ticketing rules, they just see it as corporate red tape slowing them down.
SpeakerYeah. Just let me fix the server, right?
Speaker 1Right. But if we connect this to the bigger picture, compliance is a legal shield. I mean, it protects the company from liability and it protects the technician from blame.
SpeakerThat legal shield becomes so critical when we start talking about regulated data. The COMTIA exam expects you to know exactly how to handle different categories of sensitive information.
Speaker 1You really have to have these memorized.
SpeakerOh, absolutely. So for example, PII. That's personally identifiable information.
Speaker 1So we're talking about things like a user's social security number or their home address, right?
SpeakerExactly. Then you have PHI, which is protected health information. That covers a patient's medical history or, say, their MRI results.
Speaker 1And you must map those data types to their governing regulations on the test.
SpeakerTrevor Burrus Right. So let's run through those. Okay.
Speaker 1So IPAY is the framework you follow to secure health data in the United States, ensuring it cannot be exploited.
SpeakeriPay is a big one.
Speaker 1Massive. Then there's PCI DSS. This is the strict security standard you must follow if your company processes payment cards or credit card transactions.
SpeakerBasically protecting the financial database from attackers.
Speaker 1Exactly. And finally, GDPR. This is the sweeping privacy law governing the personal data of anyone living in the European Union.
SpeakerAnd a quick note on GDPR that applies to you even if your servers are located in North America, as long as you're handling EU citizens' data.
Speaker 1Yes, such an important distinction for the exam.
SpeakerOkay, so we have this baseline of documentation, strict policies, legal frameworks keeping everything secure when the system is static. But IT is never static. The moment you need to run an update or replace a server, you threaten that compliance. So how do we manage that controlled chaos?
Speaker 1You implement strict change management.
SpeakerChange management. Okay.
Speaker 1This is how you alter the baseline safely. It begins with the request and scope. So you document the exact purpose of the change and explicitly list which systems will be affected.
SpeakerRight. You can't just wing it.
Speaker 1No winging it allowed. Then you conduct a risk analysis and formulate a plan. You basically try to predict every possible downstream failure.
SpeakerLike the payroll server crashing.
Speaker 1Exactly like that. You define your implementation steps and you schedule a maintenance window, which is usually at like 2.0 a.m. on a Sunday, to minimize user disruption.
SpeakerFun times for IT folks.
Speaker 1Oh, the best. And the final step is end user acceptance.
SpeakerWhich means you don't just close the ticket because the server didn't crash, right?
Speaker 1Right. You actually follow up with the user to confirm the new system works for their specific workflow before you update the network documentation.
SpeakerThat makes total sense. But I want to zero in on the approval process here because the study guide highlights a massive exam trap.
Speaker 1Oh, the CAB?
SpeakerYes, the CAB. The rule is never ever just make a major change on your own. You must get approval from the CAB, the change advisory board.
Speaker 1The CAB is non-negotiable for major updates. It's usually this mix of IT leadership and department heads.
SpeakerOkay, but I have to ask though, and play devil's advocate here.
Speaker 1Go for it.
SpeakerIsn't a CAB just a massive operational bottleneck? Like if I'm the senior technician and I know a critical security patch needs to be deployed today to stop an active vulnerability.
Speaker 1Right, you want to move fast.
SpeakerYeah. Why do I have to wait for a board of managers who probably don't even understand the code to give me permission?
Speaker 1Because of the payroll server scenario we talked about at the very beginning. Ah, okay. The CAB doesn't exist to question your technical ability, you know, it exists to ensure cross-departmental awareness.
SpeakerSo everyone knows what's happening.
Speaker 1Exactly. That critical security patch might close a vulnerability, sure, but it might also be completely incompatible with the legacy software the shipping department uses to print their daily labels.
SpeakerWow. Yeah. That would halt the whole warehouse. Trevor Burrus, Jr.
Speaker 1Right. The CAB forces you to look outside your little IT silo so you don't inadvertently shut down the company's revenue stream while trying to fix a security flaw.
SpeakerSo it's really about evaluating business impact, not just technical execution.
Speaker 1Precisely. And that is exactly why a rollback or backup plan is mandatory for every single CAB submission.
SpeakerA rollback plan.
Speaker 1Yeah. If your approved change unexpectedly breaks the shipping software, you don't just sit there trying to troubleshoot it live while trucks are waiting at the dock.
SpeakerRight. People are yelling at you, pressures on.
Speaker 1Yeah, you don't do that. You execute the rollback plan to instantly return the system to its previous working state.
SpeakerAnd that logically leads us to the ultimate backup plan, which is backups.
Speaker 1Oh, you have to know your backups.
SpeakerYou really do. I mean, you cannot roll back a system if you don't have the original data safely stored. So the exam expects you to be incredibly fluent in backup strategies. Let's start with the full backup.
Speaker 1Okay.
SpeakerAs the name implies, it copies absolutely everything, takes the longest time to run, and it requires massive storage drives.
Speaker 1But restoring data is incredibly simple, right? Because you just pull the file from that one big backup.
SpeakerExactly. One file, boom, you're done.
Speaker 1Right. But the alternative to that is the incremental backup. This one captures only the data that has changed since the last backup of any kind.
SpeakerAny kind at all.
Speaker 1Right. Because you are only grabbing new data, the daily backups are incredibly fast and they use very little storage space.
SpeakerWhich sounds great, right?
Speaker 1It does, until you have to restore it. The mechanism for restoring incremental backups is complex and really fragile.
SpeakerWhy is that?
Speaker 1Well, to get your system back, you need the last full backup plus every single incremental backup applied in exact chronological order. Yeah. So if Tuesday's incremental file is corrupted somehow, Wednesday and Thursday's backups are totally useless.
SpeakerOkay, I like to visualize this like reading a book.
Speaker 1Oh, let's hear it.
SpeakerIncremental backups are like only reading the new paragraphs the author wrote today. If you want to understand the whole story for the beginning, you have to painstakingly piece together every single daily paragraph in exact order.
Speaker 1That's a really good way to think about it.
SpeakerBut there's a middle ground here, which is the differential backup. Right. This captures everything changed since the last full backup.
Speaker 1Right. And the restoration process for a differential backup is much more resilient. You only ever need two pieces to restore it.
SpeakerJust two.
Speaker 1Just two. The original full backup and the single most recent differential backup.
SpeakerOkay, so sticking with the book analogy, a differential backup is like rereading the entire chapter from the beginning every single time a new paragraph is added. Exactly. It takes a little longer to read each day, but you never have to piece together all the individual daily updates. You just need the original book and the latest chapter residue.
Speaker 1That is a brilliant way to frame it for the exam, honestly.
SpeakerThanks.
Speaker 1But you know, regardless of whether you choose incremental or differential, you absolutely have to follow the three-two-one rule.
SpeakerThe three-two-one rule. Break that down for us.
Speaker 1You need three total copies of your data stored on two different types of media, with one copy held completely off-site, usually in a secure cloud environment.
SpeakerThree, two, one.
Speaker 1Yep. And most importantly, you have to test them.
SpeakerOh, yeah.
Speaker 1I say this all the time. A backup that you've never successfully restored in a test environment is not a backup.
SpeakerWhat is it then?
Speaker 1It's just a hope.
SpeakerA hope. And hoping your data survived when the serverom is literally filling with smoke is uh a terrible strategy.
Speaker 1The worst.
SpeakerWhich pivots us really well from protecting the digital data to protecting the physical hardware, and honestly, more importantly, protecting the human technician. We're talking about safety and environmental controls.
Speaker 1This is a major focus for CompTIA.
SpeakerMajor.
Speaker 1Let's start with the silent killer of hardware, ESD or electrostatic discharge. Humans build up static electricity simply by walking across a carpet. You might not even feel the shock when you touch a motherboard, but that tiny microscopic discharge is enough to blow out the pathways inside a RAM stick or a CPU.
SpeakerJust instantly ruined.
Speaker 1Instantly.
SpeakerSo the study guide stressed that you have to use anti-static wrist straps and mats.
Speaker 1Always.
SpeakerThe underlying mechanism here is about equalizing potential. Basically, you and the computer case need to have the exact same electrical voltage.
Speaker 1It's like two tanks of water leveling out, right?
SpeakerExactly like that. If you clip your wrist strap to the unpainted metal of the chassis, that electrical difference levels out slowly and safely. Right. But if you don't do that, it arcs instantly through the sensitive components. And well, you just bought the company a new motherboard.
Speaker 1Which is an expensive mistake. But beyond protecting the gear, you really have to protect yourself. The fundamental rule of physical safety is to power down and physically unplug a machine from the wall before you ever open the case.
SpeakerUnplug it. Don't just turn it off.
Speaker 1Yes. Physically unplug it. Remove the shock hazard completely. And use proper ergonomics when moving heavy servers, you know? Lift with your legs, keep your back straight, and always ask for a team lift if it's heavy.
SpeakerNo, I need to challenge something specific in the study guide here, because it feels a bit extreme.
Speaker 1Oh, really? Let's hear it.
SpeakerIt lists two absolute never rules. It says a technician must never open a power supply unit, a PSU, and never open an old CRT monitor.
Speaker 1That is correct.
SpeakerBut like if a power supply just has a dead fan inside it, popping it open to swap a $10 fan seems like a highly practical way to save the IT budget.
Speaker 1Yeah.
SpeakerWhy is the exam so aggressively against this?
Speaker 1Because of the massive capacitors inside those specific devices.
SpeakerCapacitors, okay.
Speaker 1Yeah, capacitors store electricity. And in a power supply or one of those old CRT monitors, they store a lethal amount of high voltage charge.
SpeakerLethal, like deadly.
Speaker 1Literally lethal. Even if that power supply has been completely unplugged from the wall, right? And it's been sitting on desk for a week, those capacitors can still hold enough charge to stop your heart. Yeah, you never open them unless you are an electrician specifically trained to discharge them safely. On the CompTIA exam, safety answers will always beat convenience answers.
SpeakerAlways. So no saving the 10 bucks.

Speaker 1If a power supply is broken, the only correct action is to throw it away and replace the entire sealed unit.
SpeakerUnderstood. Leave the power supplies completely alone. The exam also expects you to know how to handle chemicals and hazardous materials safely, right? Yes. Like if a laser printer cartridge explodes and you spill toner everywhere, you do not use warm water or a regular office vacuum.
Speaker 1Please don't do that.
SpeakerIt's a disaster. They'll just melt the toner into the carpet or worse, blow all those micro plastics right back into the air you're breathing.
Speaker 1Exactly.
SpeakerUse a specialized IT vacuum in cold water.
Speaker 1And if you are ever unsure about a chemical's properties, you must consult the SDS, the safety data sheet.
SpeakerThe SDS.
Speaker 1Right. It provides the exact chemical breakdown, handling heavy metal batteries, toner cartridges, or uh like old cell phones into the regular office trash.
SpeakerThere are heavy fines for that.
Speaker 1Massive fines.
SpeakerYou also have to manage the physical environment where all this hardware lives. You want the the server room temperature cool and the humidity moderate.
Speaker 1Not too dry, not too wet.
SpeakerRight. If the air is too dry, static electricity runs rampant. If it's too humid, you get condensation and the motherboards actually start to corrode.
Speaker 1Which is just as bad.
SpeakerAnd you have to keep the dust out of the air filters because dust basically acts like a thermal blanket. It insulates the components until they overheat and fail.
Speaker 1And power protection is huge, too.
SpeakerOh yeah. You need surge suppressors to absorb the big voltage spikes and a UPS, an uninterruptible power supply.
Speaker 1Basically a giant battery.
SpeakerExactly. A giant battery that gives you like a 15-minute window to cleanly shut down your servers when the building actually loses power.
Speaker 1So we have built a highly secure, perfectly documented, environmentally controlled infrastructure at this point.
SpeakerSounds like a utopia.
Speaker 1It does, but unfortunately, human beings are still involved.
SpeakerAh, the human element.
Speaker 1Always. Which means incidents will still happen. Users will click on phishing links, laptops will get stolen out of cars, and malicious software will inevitably slip through.
SpeakerAnd how you react to those incidents really defines your professionalism.
Speaker 1Without a doubt.
SpeakerWhen a serious incident occurs, you shift into first response mode. You literally treat the affected computer like an active crime scene.
Speaker 1A crime scene, that's a great way to put it.
SpeakerThe exam emphasizes identifying the scope of the problem, reporting it through the proper channels, and escalating it. You do not try to be a hero and overstep your authority.
Speaker 1Never be the hero.
SpeakerRight. And this is especially true if you encounter prohibited content like illegal material on a user's hard drive. Your job is to immediately stop what you are doing, preserve the evidence, report it to leadership or legal, and follow your incident response policy.
Speaker 1Because if we connect this to the bigger picture, treating a PC like a crime scene is all about preserving the legal integrity of a potential investigation.
SpeakerRight, keeping it clean for the lawyers or the cops.
Speaker 1Exactly. You have to maintain a strict chain of custody.
SpeakerA chain of custody. So that's like a chronological unbroken paper trail, right?
Speaker 1Yes. You have to document exactly who took possession of the hard drive, exactly what time they took it, where it was stored, and why they interacted with it.
SpeakerEvery single step.
Speaker 1Every step. Imagine a scenario where HR needs the malware logs from a compromised laptop to prove, say, an employee was intentionally sabotaging the corporate network.
SpeakerOkay. High stakes.
Speaker 1Very high stakes. Now, if an IT technician logs into that laptop and accidentally deletes the log file while just trying to clean the system to be helpful, they just destroyed the evidence.
SpeakerOh man. The case is ruined.
Speaker 1Completely ruined. Preserve, document, and escalate. That's the mantra.
SpeakerAnd navigating those high stress incidents requires exceptional soft skills. Yeah. Because the people you were supporting are going to be stressed out and frustrated.
Speaker 1They're panicking.
SpeakerYeah. So you need to practice active listening. Let them finish explaining the problem without interrupting them. And avoid technical jargon.
Speaker 1Oh, please, yeah.
SpeakerLike explaining that the quote, DNS resolution is failing due to a misconfigured subnet mask, end quote. That doesn't help an accountant who just wants to print a spreadsheet.
Speaker 1It just makes them more angry.
SpeakerExactly. Speak in terms they understand, set realistic timelines, follow up when you say you will, and always protect their privacy.
Speaker 1You know, technical skills might be what gets you the interview, but soft skills are what allow you to actually keep the job and navigate the complex human dynetics of an organization.
SpeakerCould not agree more. But here's where it gets really interesting. Oh boy. Because to actually execute all these procedures, you need the technician's toolkit. Today, that means mastering remote access and scripting.
Speaker 1Because you don't have time to walk across a huge campus to fix every minor software glitch.
SpeakerExactly. You need to know RDP remote desktop protocol. This runs over port 3389, and it basically lets you control a Windows machine as if you were sitting right in front of it.
Speaker 1And you also need to know SSH Secure Shell. This one runs over port 22 and provides a fully encrypted command line interface.
SpeakerWhich is the absolute standard for managing Linux servers safely over a network, right?
Speaker 1It is the standard, yes. There are also VPNs for creating secure encrypted tunnels into corporate networks from, say, a public Wi-Fi at a coffee shop, and VNC for cross-platform screen sharing.
SpeakerSo beyond remote access, the exam is going to test your ability to recognize scripting file types.
Speaker 1Don't panic, you don't need to be a software developer.
SpeakerRight. But you must recognize what different code looks like. So you'll see legacy file types like dot bat and dot cmd, which are old Windows batch scripts.
Speaker 1Very old school.
SpeakerYeah. You'll see.ps1, which is the modern, incredibly powerful Windows PowerShell. Dot Shik is for batch scripting on Linux.py is Python. And dot VBS and dot JS represent the older VD script and JavaScript.
Speaker 1And ComTIA loves to show you a raw snippet of code and ask you to identify which language it is based solely on its visual fingerprints.
SpeakerVisual fingerprints, I like that. So I want to make sure you know exactly what the syntax sounds and looks like. Our mountain range media guide gives two perfect examples for this. Let's do it. First, a PowerShell script that checks the free space on a drive. The exam wants you to recognize its structure. So I'm going to spell out a section of this exactly as instructed in the guide, instead of trying to read it as a word so you can visualize the character.
Speaker 1Okay, spell it out.
SpeakerIt starts like this capital G E T, hyphen, capital P, capital S, capital D R I V E space.
Speaker 1Let's pause right there.
SpeakerOkay.
Speaker 1That specific verb dash noun structure. Get P S drive. That is the undeniable fingerprint of PowerShell.
SpeakerAh, verb-noun.
Speaker 1Exactly. Whenever you see that, think PowerShell.
SpeakerOkay, so it continues. Space, pipe, symbol, space, capital S E L E C T, hyphen, capital O B J E C T space, capital N A M E, comma, space, at symbol curly bracket, and E equals curly bracket, square bracket, math, square bracket, colon, colon, capital R O U N D, open parenthesis, dollar sign underscore dot free slash one G B comma one, close parenthesis, curly bracket, curly bracket.
Speaker 1Woo! And there it is again.
SpeakerThat's a lot of symbols.
Speaker 1It is. But look at the structure. The pipe symbol takes the output of the first command and feeds it directly into the second command. And those curly brackets are used to define complex mathematical expressions.
SpeakerSo that's the tell.
Speaker 1Yes. If you see verb noun commands and pipes flowing into curly brackets, you are looking at PowerShell's object-oriented logic.
