In this episode of She Strategic, we explore a question every leader should be asking but too many avoid:
Do you actually know the conditions you require to thrive?
Not the conditions you have learned to tolerate.
Not the conditions you have proven you can survive.
But the conditions that allow you to lead, think, produce, recover, and sustain impact at a high level.
Too many high-performing leaders build careers by adapting to environments that reward endurance but ignore alignment. They learn how to function under pressure, carry unreasonable expectations, and keep producing even when the conditions around them are depleting. But survival is not the same as sustainability.
This episode uses the image of the African violet and the cactus to unpack leadership conditions. Some leaders thrive with rich soil, consistent light, care, clarity, and steady nourishment. Others may operate more like a cactus — able to withstand long dry seasons, limited input, and unpredictable conditions. Neither is better. The point is not comparison. The point is self-awareness.
Because when leaders do not understand their own conditions, they begin to mislabel their needs as weaknesses. They call themselves high maintenance when they may simply require clarity. They call themselves too sensitive when they may actually be highly attuned. They call themselves difficult when they may need alignment, psychological safety, or a healthier operating rhythm.
For Black women in executive leadership, this question carries added weight. Many have been conditioned to prove they can survive anything — exclusion, scrutiny, double standards, silence, betrayal, and impossible expectations. But She Strategic challenges the idea that survival should be the standard. The real work is learning how to lead without constantly abandoning yourself to remain acceptable in environments that were never designed with your flourishing in mind.
