we come to the end of chapter three. 00:00:10.800 --> 00:00:14.000 And this is an important place in the letter. 00:00:14.240 --> 00:00:20.800 As we've said for all these weeks, Ephesians, like many of Paul's letters, basically has two parts. 00:00:21.039 --> 00:00:29.920 Chapters 1, 2, and 3 tell us about who God is, what he has done, what we have received as a gift, our salvation by grace through faith. 00:00:30.480 --> 00:00:41.359 The second part of the letter, chapters 4, 5, and 6, are all about how shall we now live in light of this reality and this great salvation that we have received in Jesus. 00:00:41.600 --> 00:00:43.840 Today we come to the end of part one. 00:00:44.240 --> 00:00:47.920 And it's fascinating to see how Paul ends this section. 00:00:48.159 --> 00:00:50.560 He ends it with a prayer. 00:00:51.600 --> 00:00:57.200 He prays to the Father for understanding, which is a fascinating thing. 00:00:57.280 --> 00:01:11.200 For all the things Paul could pray for the Ephesians, after these three chapters of rich and deep theology, he prays for them to understand all that he has told them. 00:01:11.840 --> 00:01:19.359 For three chapters, Paul has been telling or retelling the story of redemption to the Ephesians. 00:01:19.519 --> 00:01:22.959 This story that for millennia was kind of separated from them. 00:01:23.359 --> 00:01:30.799 It picked up with Abraham, God coming to Abraham and his descendants, Isaac and Jacob and the nation of Israel. 00:01:31.040 --> 00:01:41.519 But Paul is reminding and telling the Ephesians that this story, that was very much a Jewish story, actually began before the foundations of the earth. 00:01:41.760 --> 00:01:48.480 And now these Gentiles, these non-Jews, have been swept up into that very story. 00:01:48.640 --> 00:01:51.680 Now we are great stand-ins for the Ephesians. 00:01:51.840 --> 00:02:00.000 We too, most of us, were Gentile, non-Jewish Christians, those who have come to put our faith in Christ. 00:02:00.239 --> 00:02:11.280 And what Paul wants the Ephesians and us to know more than anything here at the end of chapter 3 is the heart of the author of that story. 00:02:11.599 --> 00:02:15.840 So let's look again at verses 14 and 15 in our passage. 00:02:16.319 --> 00:02:26.719 Paul says, For this reason, all that is come before, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. 00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:34.000 Point one, our God is both our loving Father and the King of the universe. 00:02:34.240 --> 00:02:45.280 Paul says here, he begins by saying, I bow my knee before the Father, which when I initially read this, and probably when you initially read this, you think, well, this is language of prayer, right? 00:02:45.439 --> 00:02:47.360 Bending the knee, kneeling in prayer. 00:02:47.599 --> 00:02:50.560 But come to find out, no, that's not true. 00:02:51.039 --> 00:02:55.360 The common Jewish posture in prayer, and even in the early church, was to stand. 00:02:55.520 --> 00:02:58.080 If you were to stand, uh pray, you would stand. 00:02:58.159 --> 00:03:00.560 So what is this kneeling about? 00:03:00.879 --> 00:03:06.479 Kneeling is what you historically did before the sovereign, the Lord, or the king. 00:03:06.800 --> 00:03:18.960 So by beginning his prayer this way, Paul is reminding the Ephesians that the one to whom he prays and they pray is the king of the universe. 00:03:19.280 --> 00:03:28.960 This is one to whom we bend the knee, and especially when we come before the king to bring a petition, to ask something that only the king can provide. 00:03:29.599 --> 00:03:36.319 This king is higher than Herod, higher than Caesar, higher than any earthly power. 00:03:37.039 --> 00:03:46.719 But this is not some distant sovereign who is busy with the details of the kingdom and unaware or uncaring of the one who kneels before him. 00:03:46.800 --> 00:03:50.400 Paul says, I bow the knee before the Father. 00:03:51.120 --> 00:03:57.360 And as we've seen through these three chapters, that in Jesus Christ through faith we have been adopted. 00:03:57.840 --> 00:04:02.080 And we are sons and daughters of the King. 00:04:02.479 --> 00:04:10.560 And so as Paul kneels, yes, but before the sovereign king of the whole universe, he is also kneeling before his father. 00:04:11.599 --> 00:04:23.040 And so he says, if if you are one who has a kid, you know that when your child asks for something, the initial desire of our hearts is to give our kids what they want. 00:04:23.759 --> 00:04:32.319 Now, my kids annoy me to no end, and often they ask me for things and I don't want to give them because I'm tired and selfish and frugal or cheap. 00:04:34.160 --> 00:04:36.560 But God is not limited in those ways. 00:04:36.879 --> 00:04:40.879 God never gets tired to hear the requests of his children. 00:04:41.120 --> 00:04:45.839 He loves when we go to him to ask for the things that we need. 00:04:45.920 --> 00:04:55.279 And so Paul reminds us that he, that God, this God he bends the knee before, has both the power and the heart to answer his prayer. 00:04:56.160 --> 00:04:58.160 There's one more descriptor Paul gives us. 00:04:58.319 --> 00:05:05.360 He is the Father, he is the King, and He is the one from whom every family on heaven and earth is named. 00:05:05.519 --> 00:05:07.600 Now, why does he add this descriptor? 00:05:07.839 --> 00:05:10.959 This is very important to these Gentile Christians. 00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:20.319 When we talk about the one from whom all the families of the earth are named, outside the family of Abraham, Paul is hearkening back to creation itself. 00:05:20.560 --> 00:05:25.680 The Bible often talks about God naming things in association with his creation. 00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:31.120 The Psalms say that God created all the stars of the heavens and he named each one. 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:43.680 And we're told that when God creates Adam, our first father, that he included Adam in the creation process by allowing him to name the animals of his creation. 00:05:43.759 --> 00:05:54.639 And so by reminding the Ephesians that this is the God from whom every family, not just the Jewish families, is named, he reminds them that this is their God. 00:05:54.879 --> 00:05:56.560 He is the God of all peoples. 00:05:56.639 --> 00:06:02.079 And this is the great mystery that Paul was uniquely given the gift to proclaim. 00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:20.240 The mystery that even before the foundation of the earth, God's plan was not just to set aside for himself a small people group, the Jews, and to save and to love them, but through those people to save and to love all the people of the earth. 00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:37.519 And we see the fulfillment of that, that fulfillment for which we still wait in Revelation 7, when every tribe and tongue and nation are gathered together in the new heavens and the new earth, and they worship, we worship our God and king. 00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:49.920 God is taking all the families of the earth who were dispersed and separated, and he is making now one new humanity in the Son. 00:06:50.079 --> 00:06:56.079 And so he reminds them that he is no stranger to them, though they have been estranged from him for some time. 00:06:56.639 --> 00:07:00.720 So what is Paul now kneeling before the Father to ask? 00:07:00.959 --> 00:07:05.519 Point to Paul prays for a cascading series of gifts. 00:07:07.360 --> 00:07:12.879 This is an incredible passage to simply sit and meditate on, and I encourage you to do that. 00:07:12.959 --> 00:07:21.439 But but Paul, in this letter, he's so effusive with his language, and he he has clauses within clauses, it can get some a little bit grammatically confusing. 00:07:21.519 --> 00:07:23.519 And so uh for me this is helpful. 00:07:23.600 --> 00:07:31.920 So I want to show it to you that in this one prayer, he asks for three things specifically, and they're like a cascading waterfall, one flowing into the next. 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:48.399 He says, I bow my knees before the Father so that he may grant you strength through his spirit, so that you may comprehend the love Christ has for you, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 00:07:49.199 --> 00:07:51.839 So let's walk through these each in turn. 00:07:52.079 --> 00:07:57.839 Point three, Paul prays for God to grant the Ephesians strength of understanding. 00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:00.160 Let me read verses 16 and 17. 00:08:00.319 --> 00:08:15.839 He says, He prays that according to the riches of his glory, he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, that you being rooted and grounded in love. 00:08:16.079 --> 00:08:16.879 Dot, dot, dot. 00:08:17.120 --> 00:08:17.439 Okay. 00:08:18.079 --> 00:08:19.439 This first petition. 00:08:19.600 --> 00:08:27.519 First, he prays that this strength, like their salvation, comes as a gift. 00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:33.600 He doesn't say, hey, buckle down, Ephesians, get to studying, put your thinking caps on. 00:08:34.159 --> 00:08:41.279 He says, I pray that God would grant you power through his spirit to understand. 00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:50.240 We've talked uh through multiple sermons through this series that our salvation is completely the act of sovereign grace. 00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:53.600 That's all a gift that we simply receive. 00:08:53.679 --> 00:09:04.399 And so even Paul says, even here, our understanding, our comprehension, our ability to grasp this truth is a gift from God. 00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:10.320 Second, this strength comes through the Spirit, through God's Holy Spirit. 00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:18.559 And this is easy to miss, but I want us to just stop for a moment and and and witness here Paul's deep Trinitarian theology. 00:09:20.720 --> 00:09:30.960 He prays to the Father that the Ephesians would be given strength through the Spirit, so that the Son of God may dwell in their hearts by faith. 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:39.440 Beloved, we worship one God who has revealed himself in three persons, and those three persons are not at odds. 00:09:39.600 --> 00:09:46.879 It is not as if the father is angry and wrathful, and the son is loving and merciful, and he comes and placates the Father. 00:09:46.960 --> 00:09:51.919 No, the plan of our salvation came from the heart of the Father before the foundations of the earth. 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:57.360 It is carried out by the Son, and it is gifted to us through the Spirit. 00:09:58.240 --> 00:10:05.840 Paul wants us to know, to see, and to revel in this unity in our triune God. 00:10:06.639 --> 00:10:16.000 Third, he prays that this strength that he wants for us and for the Ephesians, that it would be supplied through the riches of God's glory. 00:10:17.279 --> 00:10:18.480 So think about it. 00:10:18.720 --> 00:10:21.840 How rich is God in glory? 00:10:22.879 --> 00:10:28.159 If God had a bank account of glory, what's the balance? 00:10:29.919 --> 00:10:31.279 Well, it's infinite. 00:10:31.440 --> 00:10:36.879 There are not enough zeros to account for the glory of God. 00:10:37.039 --> 00:10:38.799 God is infinite in glory. 00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:42.480 God is his glory, his glory is his person. 00:10:42.559 --> 00:10:48.320 And so Paul says, this is the power that we are tapping into. 00:10:48.799 --> 00:10:50.320 It is an infinite power. 00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:55.279 It is a power that flows from a heart of love from a father. 00:10:56.399 --> 00:10:59.440 But what is this strength needed for, you might ask? 00:10:59.600 --> 00:11:04.639 Well, point four, Paul prays for strength that we might comprehend love. 00:11:05.600 --> 00:11:07.279 Specifically, Christ's love for us. 00:11:07.360 --> 00:11:09.360 Let's look at verses 18 and 19. 00:11:09.519 --> 00:11:24.960 He prays that they may have strength to comprehend together with all the saints what is the breadth and length, the height and the depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 00:11:25.600 --> 00:11:30.159 There's a beautiful story in the book, The Hiding Place. 00:11:30.240 --> 00:11:35.519 It's kind of a memoir from Corey Tenboom that takes place during World War II. 00:11:35.600 --> 00:11:42.480 And she has this beautiful story about when she's a little girl, she's going somewhere with her father, and I believe they're heading to the train station. 00:11:42.559 --> 00:11:46.720 And she asks a question of her father, like lots of our young children do. 00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:53.519 It's a question that is beyond her ability to understand the answer because of her young age. 00:11:53.679 --> 00:11:55.919 She is not mature enough to understand. 00:11:56.080 --> 00:12:09.840 But it her father, in his wisdom, rather than answering her directly in response to her question, he puts down his two suitcases and he's and he asks her, Corey, would you pick up these suitcases for me and carry them on? 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:15.600 And she goes and she she's confused, but she tries to pick them up and she says, Papa, these are these are too heavy. 00:12:16.399 --> 00:12:17.679 I can't carry them. 00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:20.159 He says, Yes, that that's right. 00:12:20.320 --> 00:12:26.480 And the the question you're answer asking, the answer is too heavy for you right now to understand. 00:12:26.639 --> 00:12:30.799 But one day you will be old enough and and you will understand. 00:12:30.960 --> 00:12:41.840 And in a similar way, Paul is saying to the Ephesians that to comprehend the love that God has for us takes divine strength. 00:12:44.080 --> 00:12:49.759 That fact alone is worth pondering meditating. 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:54.799 Do you know how much God loves you if you are in Christ? 00:12:56.559 --> 00:12:59.200 I can almost guarantee that you don't. 00:12:59.679 --> 00:13:05.759 You don't understand the breadth and the length and the height and the depth of it. 00:13:05.919 --> 00:13:06.159 Why? 00:13:06.399 --> 00:13:09.440 Because it comes from a heart of infinite love. 00:13:11.200 --> 00:13:18.320 But Paul wants, he wants for the Ephesians and for us what he has been gifted, and that is a deeper understanding. 00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:25.600 A deep understanding into the mysteries of God, the plans of God, what God has been doing since before the foundations of the earth. 00:13:25.679 --> 00:13:39.039 And he knows that if we if we can if our understanding can be strengthened and stretched, then our hearts will be strengthened and stretched and filled with the love of God. 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:44.879 And that that love will change us, will shape us. 00:13:46.960 --> 00:13:56.399 I remember uh wrestling with this some time ago because it it's it's kind of a strange thing to think why do we need strength to comprehend the love of God? 00:13:56.559 --> 00:14:07.600 Well, I I was I was going through a particularly difficult time, it's very anxious, um, just struggling, and and I was talking to someone seeking counsel, and they said, Hey, Matt, you're okay. 00:14:07.840 --> 00:14:08.799 God loves you. 00:14:09.039 --> 00:14:10.480 You're a beloved son. 00:14:10.960 --> 00:14:16.480 And I remember my honest response was, I'm glad God loves me. 00:14:16.720 --> 00:14:22.399 I have no idea what that has to do with what's going on in my life. 00:14:23.120 --> 00:14:27.200 It wasn't until I walked through this season of difficulty, of suffering. 00:14:27.279 --> 00:14:29.440 Some of the things we've we've sung this morning. 00:14:29.679 --> 00:14:36.320 Sam's done an incredible job of picking uh incredible songs for us to sing this morning. 00:14:36.399 --> 00:14:46.159 It wasn't until I went through that hard time that that through that God purposefully led me down where all the other loves of my life seemed to be stripped away. 00:14:47.120 --> 00:14:49.679 And there was only one love left. 00:14:50.399 --> 00:15:02.799 When all other loves and all other ambitions were stripped away, and I was kind of taken down to the bone, what I realized and what I experienced in a depth I had never known before is that the love of God endures. 00:15:04.799 --> 00:15:17.840 That when I fall completely short, when I have nothing left in myself, when I ultimately realize that I have nothing to give and no way to earn, God loves me. 00:15:19.600 --> 00:15:24.639 His love endures when I betray and turn away from him. 00:15:24.799 --> 00:15:27.840 When I am faithless, he is faithful. 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:30.559 When I don't have the strength, he is strong. 00:15:31.440 --> 00:15:33.440 His love will never end. 00:15:34.159 --> 00:15:55.600 And it was in that moment that the love of God shone brightly, brighter than I'd ever seen before into my heart, and I understood the words that Teresa of Avila is so famous for saying that because I have received the love of Christ, it is a true thing that all things will be well. 00:15:56.799 --> 00:15:59.360 All manner of things will be well. 00:16:00.399 --> 00:16:06.799 It is a peace and it is a grounding and it is a rooting that I had never understood before. 00:16:06.960 --> 00:16:13.039 And this is what Paul longs for each of us to know and to experience. 00:16:13.200 --> 00:16:18.000 It is a knowledge of love that surpasses knowledge. 00:16:19.360 --> 00:16:26.320 This is where human language meets paradox and the limits of human comprehension. 00:16:26.399 --> 00:16:27.360 And so we pray. 00:16:27.519 --> 00:16:32.399 Paul prays that the power of the Spirit might be poured out into our hearts. 00:16:32.639 --> 00:16:41.360 So that finally he says, the last, so that, the what Paul ultimately wants for us is that we would be filled with all the fullness of God. 00:16:42.720 --> 00:16:47.039 This is an astounding statement, an astounding prayer. 00:16:47.279 --> 00:16:50.320 You're like, and I am like, a small cup. 00:16:51.279 --> 00:16:54.879 And God's love is like the ocean. 00:16:55.279 --> 00:16:58.559 How can you fill a cup with the ocean? 00:16:59.120 --> 00:17:00.960 It's absolutely impossible. 00:17:01.120 --> 00:17:06.960 And yet, this is Paul's prayer that we might be filled with all the fullness of God. 00:17:07.680 --> 00:17:10.559 And I love, you know, my words fail. 00:17:10.640 --> 00:17:13.119 I love the way one commentator described this. 00:17:13.200 --> 00:17:16.960 He says, this is precisely God's love that's in view. 00:17:17.279 --> 00:17:22.079 Thus, the end of the Christian life is to be filled up with God's love. 00:17:22.720 --> 00:17:33.680 That which is the very essence of God, that which characterizes the relations of the trying persons, that which will make us one with God. 00:17:35.200 --> 00:17:51.200 You see, Paul doesn't just want us to know how much we are loved, to experience how overwhelming God's love is for us, but he wants us to be filled with God's love so that as his love pours out into us, it overflows out of us into the world around us. 00:17:51.359 --> 00:17:53.440 That's what the rest of the book is about. 00:17:54.240 --> 00:17:58.079 And that's why we must grasp chapters 1, 2, and 3. 00:17:58.160 --> 00:18:03.279 We must know that we are rooted and grounded in a love that we cannot comprehend. 00:18:03.519 --> 00:18:09.920 That is our lifeblood, that is our foundation, that is who we are, it tells us who we are, and it actually tells us who God is. 00:18:10.319 --> 00:18:25.119 This is the one thing Paul wants you to know out of everything else in this book, most important, God loves you in an everlasting love that we don't deserve, but it's ours by grace through faith. 00:18:25.279 --> 00:18:36.400 And so if you, like me, not that long ago, were wrestling with what does it really mean to be loved by God, I charge you to go and find out what that means. 00:18:36.960 --> 00:18:41.039 That is the most important thing you can know. 00:18:43.039 --> 00:18:48.240 And what's amazing is that this is an infinite love poured out into us. 00:18:48.400 --> 00:18:50.720 All right, let's look at Paul's final words as we wrap up. 00:18:50.799 --> 00:19:06.880 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we can ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. 00:19:07.440 --> 00:19:08.079 Amen. 00:19:08.720 --> 00:19:15.119 So Paul has come to the end of this teaching section that we encapsulate in chapters one, two, and three. 00:19:15.279 --> 00:19:23.359 For three chapters, he's been telling us about God, about who God is, about what God has done, about what he has given to us. 00:19:24.559 --> 00:19:34.559 And now, as he closes in prayer and he's about to transition into how we shall live, he does the professors, his name was Vern Poythrus, and this guy was super duper smart. 00:19:49.359 --> 00:19:54.720 He had graduated from MIT, and I think he got a doctorate from Harvard or whatever. 00:19:54.880 --> 00:19:57.839 And uh off the charts, smart, a little odd. 00:19:58.000 --> 00:20:07.119 Uh yeah, this feeling when you're around him, like he was operating two or three levels kind of above where you are, which is impressive but also unrelatable. 00:20:07.359 --> 00:20:11.599 So he was um he was just kind of an awkward guy. 00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:14.799 Um, but there was also this other thing about him. 00:20:14.960 --> 00:20:20.640 It was very clear that he loved Jesus, and his classes were a joy. 00:20:20.880 --> 00:20:30.799 Well, I learned that most profoundly one day, one random day, we're we're in this class, he's teaching some deep theological truth, and I'm just trying to keep up taking notes. 00:20:31.039 --> 00:20:32.319 And he just stops. 00:20:32.480 --> 00:20:36.319 Smack stops in the middle of class and he says, We need to pray. 00:20:37.440 --> 00:20:40.000 And I'm, you know, I'm just trying to keep up, I'm taking notes. 00:20:40.079 --> 00:20:47.440 So it takes me a second to realize what's happening, but he stops in light of what we've been learning about Jesus in the book of Revelation. 00:20:47.599 --> 00:20:52.640 He stops and he he just enters into a prayer of praise and thanksgiving. 00:20:54.240 --> 00:21:06.240 And now, 20 years later, I remember that class, and I remember that that's the most appropriate, that was the most appropriate thing to do in any seminary class, and it only happened once. 00:21:09.519 --> 00:21:12.960 Beloved, we are so loved. 00:21:13.039 --> 00:21:17.039 It is a it is a profound truth that our minds can't wrap around. 00:21:17.119 --> 00:21:27.200 And Paul shows us, even as he prays, that we would have the power through the spirit to have that comprehension, to be filled with that love, the most appropriate response. 00:21:27.359 --> 00:21:32.000 Before we even look at chapter 4, 5, and 6, before we think, well, what should we do? 00:21:33.839 --> 00:21:39.200 The natural inclination of the Spirit is to stop and to worship. 00:21:41.359 --> 00:21:47.759 Oh God, who is beyond our understanding, who is able to do far more than all we could ask or imagine. 00:21:48.720 --> knowledge of God's love that goes beyond our understanding, knowing that we pray to the King of the universe who has all the power, but is also our Father, and so he loves to give us good gifts, and
