in the sovereignty of man. 00:02:55.919 --> 00:03:06.479 Regardless of what we know in our minds, what we know the Bible teaches, it's our heart's natural bent, our instinct to grasp for any control that we feel like we can have. 00:03:06.879 --> 00:03:09.039 But this perceived control is just that. 00:03:09.120 --> 00:03:11.599 It's perceived, it's an illusion. 00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:18.400 We see from the very beginning of mankind and the Garden of Eden, it is very clear that we are dependent creatures. 00:03:18.800 --> 00:03:23.199 God, our Father, is sufficient and whole in and of himself. 00:03:23.680 --> 00:03:36.240 He created everything from nothing and with nothing but his hand and his word, and he has revealed his deepest identity to us, saying, I am who I am, as he spoke obvious to some of you, or it may seem like heady, lofty nonsense to some, but this idea, this creator-creature distinction, God being set apart from us, is the nucleus of gospel humility. 00:04:26.800 --> 00:04:34.319 Our second point this morning is that the gospel humility rests and leans on the glory of Jesus. 00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:45.120 Gospel humility happens in us when we turn our eyes off of ourselves and our perceived control and we turn them towards the glory and splendor of Jesus. 00:04:45.759 --> 00:04:49.519 See, I particularly love the way Jesus tells this parable in Matthew 13. 00:04:49.759 --> 00:04:50.879 It's pretty brilliant. 00:04:51.279 --> 00:04:52.240 Look at what he does. 00:04:53.439 --> 00:05:03.120 He knows when we hear this parable, hear him teaching, that we will naturally hear his words and insert ourselves into this scenario as the man in verse 24. 00:05:03.600 --> 00:05:06.319 And I think Jesus anticipated that we would go there. 00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:09.600 He knows that we love to be the center of the story. 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:19.439 He knows that we like to be the main character, but when he's done teaching, Jesus leaves this crowd and goes back with his disciples and has a debrief with them of all the teaching he just did. 00:05:19.759 --> 00:05:22.000 And they ask him to elaborate on this parable. 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:23.680 What does this mean? 00:05:24.079 --> 00:05:31.199 And when doing so, as we see starting in verse 37, Jesus flips our natural understanding of this parable on its head. 00:05:31.439 --> 00:05:36.480 He reads, 37, The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 00:05:36.800 --> 00:05:44.720 The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom, the weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. 00:05:44.959 --> 00:05:49.439 The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. 00:05:49.920 --> 00:05:57.920 See, what Jesus is doing here is he's revealing this reality to us that he, the Son of Man, is the one who sows the good seed. 00:05:58.240 --> 00:05:59.279 It's not us. 00:05:59.439 --> 00:06:02.959 He's the one who nourishes, who controls, who guides. 00:06:03.920 --> 00:06:09.040 And in doing this, he's exposing that assumption we have that we are the ones in control. 00:06:10.480 --> 00:06:25.519 When we see he reveals himself as the Son of Man in verse 37, and more than Son of God, Messiah, Christ, Lord, Son of Man is Jesus' favorite title for himself, using it the most of any around 80 times in all of the Gospels. 00:06:25.839 --> 00:06:35.439 And while this title seems to highlight Jesus' humanity, being a son born from man and woman, the title Son of Man really and primarily emphasizes his deity. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:40.399 Let's look at Daniel 7, verses 13 and 14. 00:06:40.879 --> 00:06:46.639 The prophet says, I saw in the night visions, and behold, at the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man. 00:06:46.879 --> 00:06:55.920 And he came to the ancient of days, and he was presented before him, and to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom that all people, nations, and languages should serve him. 00:06:56.319 --> 00:07:00.399 His dominion is an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away. 00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:04.160 And his kingdom is one that shall not be destroyed. 00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:17.279 By referring to himself, simply referring to himself as the Son of Man, here in this parable, Jesus is professing his authority and absolute power over all creation, saying, I am the one with the everlasting dominion. 00:07:17.439 --> 00:07:18.319 It is me. 00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:23.680 See, you and I we're not the ones who sow the seeds in the kingdom of God. 00:07:23.839 --> 00:07:31.759 It's the Son of Man, Christ Jesus, who rules in a heavenly kingdom with an everlasting and all-powerful dominion. 00:07:32.240 --> 00:07:38.399 And at the core of this parable, Jesus is showing us what true humility is, what gospel humility is. 00:07:38.560 --> 00:07:46.079 He's saying that the only way to be truly humble, to live a life of humility, is to keep God as the reference point for everything. 00:07:46.399 --> 00:07:53.759 Your desires, your affections, your time, your work, your relationships, your family, your marriage, your faith. 00:07:54.399 --> 00:08:03.920 See, it's an inherently proud and unhumble to assume that we can be like God because at that point we forget that we are creatures created by Him. 00:08:04.639 --> 00:08:17.199 So therefore, humility, it should be our default posture as we go through life as citizens of the kingdom of God, living in the reality that we are the Father's beloved children, abiding and doing his work. 00:08:19.040 --> 00:08:28.959 See, gospel humility is not about bringing ourselves low as much as it is about exalting the name of Jesus high who is always telling you that, of course, he's a nobody. 00:08:47.440 --> 00:08:53.840 Probably all you would think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. 00:08:54.080 --> 00:09:00.320 If you do dislike him, it'll be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. 00:09:00.639 --> 00:09:05.440 He will not be thinking about humility, he will not be thinking about himself at all. 00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:12.559 Or in other words, humility is not thinking less of yourself, but it is thinking of but it is a message of grace from Jesus. 00:09:26.240 --> 00:09:33.840 And our third point this morning is that while pride is an exhausting illusion, humility is a relieving reality. 00:09:34.559 --> --> 00:10:01.440 And if the Inside Out movies they show us anything, they illustrate the turmoil that goes on in our hearts and our minds when left to ourselves. 00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:08.960 When Matthew 13, Jesus is not condemning success and achievements, but he is exposing this unsatisfying illusion of control that we believe that we have. 00:12:56.559 --> 00:13:06.639 Even if we get to a place where we're operating at the highest level and controlling every factor in our lives to be secure, we'll still be left unsatisfied. 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:11.360 The kingdom of God offers different things for us. 00:13:11.519 --> 00:13:20.399 The most unhumble thing that we can do is try to earn and work for things that God has already made us and graciously given us in Christ. heart and your minds, where it was up to you to determine your own assurances in this life and after, where it was up to you to make every wrong a right to bring justice to all the injustice in the wonderful and very powerful movie, you know that it pretty much ends with a question that asks, what should we do about the brokenness of the world? 00:14:34.559 --> 00:14:36.000 What can we do? But the kingdom of heaven revealed to us in the parable of the weeds or the words of Jesus presents a reality that we don't have to figure it out ourselves, because we can't. 00:14:58.399 --> 00:15:05.519 That the heartbeat of gospel humility is recognizing that reality and worshiping God because of it. 00:15:06.159 --> 00:15:14.080 As the great Charles Spurgeon said, when you go through a trial, the sovereignty of God is the pillow upon which to lay your head. 00:15:15.600 --> 00:15:20.159 The natural outworking of this humility is grace and peace and rest. 00:15:20.960 --> yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant, being highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth, and under the earth in every tongue confess that
