last words stick with you, and this morning we see our guy, Moses, again, the end of Leviticus, where Moses, still on Mount Sinai, is giving the people of God the last words of this book. 00:01:58.079 --> 00:02:11.360 We've been studying this book, Leviticus, for the last six months or so, and as we've been talking about and seeing week in and week out, is the big issue of Leviticus is this a holy God and an unholy people, so how can they dwell together? 00:02:11.680 --> 00:02:24.159 This book, the book that often kills Bible reading plans, uh, has shown us the answer is this a lot of rules, a of blessing here in Leviticus 26 would have brought all the Israelites back to this famous story they heard about Father Abraham. 00:05:26.560 --> 00:05:30.480 Hey, remember when God showed up to Abram and said he's gonna make us a great nation? 00:05:30.639 --> 00:05:36.399 When they heard Leviticus 26, their eyes would have been brought right back to this moment when God made this promise. 00:05:36.720 --> 00:05:40.079 The Israelites obey, they would see the covenant to Abram fulfilled. 00:05:40.240 --> 00:05:43.279 A great nation in the land promised, with abundance and peace. This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me. 00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:13.840 For from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace. 00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:18.399 For the law was given through Moses, grace and truth come through Jesus Christ. 00:09:18.639 --> 00:09:23.919 No one has ever seen God, the only God who is at the Father's side, he has made him known. 00:09:24.159 --> 00:09:42.480 So we see John explaining Jesus, the word of God, the self-declaration of God, and John says that he, Jesus, dwelt among us, and a better translation again could be He tabernacled among us, which means that Jesus is even more clearly fulfilling the law in this way, the blessing of Leviticus 26. 00:09:42.960 --> 00:09:49.200 About 30 years later, this same apostle John sees a picture of what heaven is going to be like. 00:09:49.440 --> 00:09:52.480 And he writes this look at this in Revelation 21 with me. 00:09:52.960 --> 00:09:59.679 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 00:09:59.919 --> 00:10:02.559 Which would have been really good news, because that means there's no more chaos. 00:10:02.720 --> 00:10:08.960 Verse 2, and I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 00:10:09.039 --> 00:10:09.840 And look at this. 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:19.919 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, he will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 00:10:20.159 --> 00:10:21.519 Think you're picking up with me. 00:10:21.759 --> 00:10:28.320 Whenever it says dwelling place here, it's talking about God saying, I will be their tabernacle with them. 00:10:28.559 --> 00:10:33.360 He will tabernacle with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 00:10:34.240 --> 00:10:38.399 The presence of God with his people is the ultimate promise of the gospel. 00:10:38.799 --> 00:10:44.080 And King David would say in Psalm 16 that in this day, a very typical covenantal structure, which is here's the promise. 00:16:58.559 --> 00:17:00.240 If you follow the promise, it's gonna go good. 00:17:00.399 --> 00:17:02.960 If you don't pretty real words of warning to them, and in all of it is because he loves them. 00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:41.039 Chapter 26 here feels like a great way for the book of Leviticus to end, doesn't it? 00:18:41.279 --> 00:18:49.440 It wraps up the covenant, a word of forgiveness to broken people, a word of God's extravagant and lavish grace to sinners, even if they fail. 00:18:49.680 --> 00:18:51.119 But strangely, it doesn't end here. 00:18:51.200 --> 00:18:54.799 It ends with one more chapter, which on the surface feels very out of place. 00:18:55.039 --> 00:19:01.119 Leviticus 27, the next chapter, gives us a return back to the beginning of the book, a full circle back. 00:19:01.359 --> 00:19:07.200 In the beginning of Leviticus, we see these three voluntary offerings, not required but voluntary, that the people of God could do. 00:19:07.359 --> 00:19:09.599 The burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the peace offerings. 00:19:09.680 --> 00:19:13.920 And then here at the end, we see a return to these voluntary offerings. 00:19:14.079 --> 00:19:25.279 Because chapter 27 is about God's people expressing their love and devotion back to them, back to Him, freely and fully, beyond the call of duty, because lovers delight in giving gifts. 00:19:25.599 --> 00:19:29.119 Because lavish love and grace lead to lavish response. 00:19:29.359 --> 00:19:31.279 That's what chapter 27 is all about. 00:19:31.440 --> 00:19:45.119 This chapter gives very detailed instructions on hey, if you decide out of your own overflow of love for God that you want to dedicate property, uh, land, uh, a child or a spouse to dedication to God's ministry, here's the right way to do it. 00:19:45.279 --> 00:19:47.440 Here's the most helpful way to do it. 00:19:48.000 --> 00:19:53.279 Leviticus 27 is about a superabundant response to a superabundant grace. 00:19:54.000 --> 00:19:56.799 Well, that's the story of Leviticus 27. 00:19:57.279 --> 00:19:59.759 Chapter 26 leaves Israel with a choice. 00:20:00.000 --> 00:20:03.519 Hey, if you obey, if you follow God's word, it's gonna go well. 00:20:03.599 --> 00:20:06.720 And if you don't, things aren't gonna go so great. 00:20:07.759 --> 00:20:11.599 The bad news, if you know your Bible, is that the Israelites didn't do it. 00:20:11.839 --> 00:20:16.160 They did not follow the covenantal conditions set forth in chapter 26. 00:20:16.720 --> 00:20:21.119 They fell short again and again into their own misery. 00:20:21.519 --> 00:20:31.759 The temple would ultimately be destroyed, they would be attacked by the sword and fall, they would see the presence of God fall away a bit, and they would find themselves stubborn and hopeless. 00:20:31.839 --> 00:20:38.480 And the rest of the Old Testament is story after story of what happened to Israel as they didn't fulfill this covenant. 00:20:39.599 --> 00:20:41.440 I want to close with a story from the Gospels. 00:20:41.680 --> 00:20:46.640 That's one of my favorite stories because it shows that the gospel is a little messier than we'd like to admit. 00:20:47.119 --> 00:20:52.160 But it's also a story that shows what happens to someone when they've received lavish grace. 00:20:53.039 --> 00:21:00.480 Jesus, he's he's hanging out with this Pharisee and they're at the dinner table together and having a meal, and it turns out this Pharisee is he's pretty proud of himself. 00:21:00.720 --> 00:21:05.759 He's a really big fan of his own self-righteousness, not a very big fan of grace and mercy. 00:21:06.799 --> 00:21:16.079 And then this woman shows up, and Luke uses a very particular word to describe this woman, one word, a sinner, which is just exactly who Jesus wanted to be with. 00:21:16.640 --> 00:21:20.720 And she shows up and she bows at his feet, and the text says that she's weeping. 00:21:21.039 --> 00:21:24.319 And this isn't just like a single tear down the cheek when you're watching a sad movie. 00:21:24.400 --> 00:21:28.319 This is like on your face, wailing, is the kind of word used here. 00:21:28.480 --> 00:21:29.279 Maybe you've been there. 00:21:29.839 --> 00:21:35.279 And as she's weeping, she starts pouring out this really expensive ointment onto his feet, and she's kissing his feet. 00:21:35.599 --> 00:21:40.960 She's probably just overjoyed that this prophet or son of God, whoever he might be, loves her. 00:21:41.200 --> 00:21:43.839 Because nobody else has ever figured out how to yet. 00:21:44.079 --> 00:21:46.960 And this Pharisee, his name is Simon, he's pretty smug. 00:21:47.200 --> 00:21:57.039 He even just kind of says to himself, kind of whispers to himself Hey, if this man were a prophet, he'd know exactly what kind of woman this is, a sinner, unlike me. 00:21:57.279 --> 00:21:59.759 And then Jesus responds in a parable, which is something. 00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:00.799 He did a lot. 00:22:01.039 --> 00:22:03.200 Let's read Luke 7, 41 through 50 together. 00:22:03.279 --> 00:22:04.880 So this is Jesus talking. 00:22:05.200 --> 00:22:11.039 A certain moneylender had two debtors, one owed 500 denera days' wage, and the other fifty. 00:22:11.119 --> 00:22:14.000 And when they could not pay, he canceled the debt of both. 00:22:14.240 --> 00:22:15.759 Now which of them will love him more? 00:22:15.839 --> 00:22:20.799 And Simon, this Pharisee, he answered, the one I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt. 00:22:21.039 --> 00:22:23.039 And Jesus said to him, You have judged rightly. 00:22:23.200 --> 00:22:26.160 And then turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, Do you see this woman? 00:22:26.319 --> 00:22:32.960 I entered your house and you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 00:22:33.200 --> 00:22:37.519 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 00:22:37.680 --> 00:22:40.880 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has religious leaders sitting at this table with our boy Simon, this woman, the sinner, she's the one who is saved. 00:23:13.039 --> 00:23:16.880 She's the one who's told by Jesus of Nazareth to go in peace. 00:23:17.119 --> 00:23:21.599 She had received lavish grace from this new man who she just met. 00:23:22.160 --> 00:23:27.039 Leviticus closes with a picture of a people enamored with God's grace. 00:23:27.279 --> 00:23:33.440 Just like this woman who can't believe that God would forgive and love someone like her. 00:23:34.079 --> 00:23:40.240 The last words of Leviticus here's the open door to forgiveness and life, if you would just believe. 00:23:40.480 --> 00:23:45.440 Hey, Israel, I know you didn't obey, but my forgiveness is lavish. 00:23:45.519 --> 00:23:47.839 And Israel bore the curse for their disobedience. 00:23:48.160 --> 00:23:48.720 They did. 00:23:48.880 --> 00:23:51.039 They did not follow the covenant, and they bore the curse. 00:23:51.119 --> 00:23:56.720 But what the good news of the gospel is is that you and I broke the curse, and yet Jesus took it upon himself. 00:23:57.279 --> 00:24:02.400 Jesus took upon separation from his Father so that you and I
