WEBVTT 00:00:00.239 --> 00:00:04.080 Well, this morning we are finishing a brief series on the book of Titus. 00:00:04.799 --> 00:00:06.639 Three weeks, three chapters, three weeks. 00:00:06.719 --> 00:00:09.359 So today we're looking at chapter three. 00:00:09.519 --> 00:00:12.400 This is one of Paul's three pastoral epistles. 00:00:12.640 --> 00:00:22.320 These were letters Paul wrote to pastors who were in particularly difficult situations, giving them advice, encouragement, instruction. 00:00:22.719 --> 00:00:25.760 The two other pastoral letters are first and second Timothy. 00:00:25.839 --> 00:00:28.160 You're probably familiar with those. 00:00:28.480 --> 00:00:47.759 On Paul's missionary journey, he traveled throughout the Greco-Roman Empire, preaching the gospel, starting churches, and he, in particular on the island of Crete, right next to Greece, he did that and he left Titus behind as an overseer and instructed him to bring order to the churches there. 00:00:47.920 --> 00:00:55.280 We saw in chapter one how he instructed how elders were to be identified, elected, and installed. 00:00:56.799 --> 00:01:02.880 And this wasn't an easy job for Titus, and we see that throughout this letter. 00:01:03.119 --> 00:01:08.079 Titus faced opposition both from within the church and from without. 00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:14.560 He faced opposition from a what's called the circumcision group, and you read about them throughout the New Testament. 00:01:14.719 --> 00:01:22.239 These were early Jewish Christians who taught that to become a Christian you had to become fully Jewish. 00:01:22.480 --> 00:01:27.120 And so absorb and obey the whole Old Testament law. 00:01:27.519 --> 00:01:30.319 Hence they were called the circumcision party. 00:01:30.560 --> 00:01:38.560 On the other side were the Cretans, those who lived on Crete who were either inside or outside of the church. 00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:43.840 And Paul described them in chapter one as liars, evil beasts, and lazy gluttons. 00:01:44.239 --> 00:01:48.000 So Titus had his work cut out for him. 00:01:49.120 --> 00:02:04.879 In this letter, Paul's primary concern as he longs for the church to grow in maturity and grace, he's instructing Titus about how Christians are to live in this world in various categories or contexts. 00:02:05.120 --> 00:02:09.360 In chapter one, he focuses on how we are to live together as the church. 00:02:09.520 --> 00:02:13.599 In chapter two, he focuses on how we are to live within the household. 00:02:13.759 --> 00:02:23.439 And in chapter three today, he's talking about how we as Christians are to live in relationship to the wider world around us of non-Christians. 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:33.199 And the funny thing is, I mean, it's not unexpected, but in all three chapters, Paul's answer to the question, how do we live in these different contexts is the gospel. 00:02:33.520 --> 00:02:39.120 He presents to us the gospel as like a lens, a lens through which we look when we ask questions. 00:02:39.280 --> 00:02:43.520 How should I live in this crazy world that we live in today? 00:02:43.680 --> 00:02:47.360 He says, if you want to know, look through the lens of the gospel. 00:02:47.520 --> 00:02:49.680 So that's what we're going to look at this morning. 00:02:50.400 --> 00:02:52.879 Point number one, we'll just jump right off here. 00:02:53.120 --> 00:02:59.520 Christians are to be perfectly courteous to all people, inside and outside the church. 00:02:59.680 --> 00:03:03.439 Let's look again at verses one and two in Titus three. 00:03:03.680 --> 00:03:19.680 He says, Remind them, Titus, to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarrels, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy to all people. 00:03:20.479 --> 00:03:24.240 I find Paul's list fascinating as he, what is he gonna say? 00:03:24.479 --> 00:03:26.960 How is he instructing the Christians? 00:03:27.199 --> 00:03:32.879 First, he tells them that they are to submit to earthly authorities. 00:03:33.039 --> 00:03:49.199 Rather than seeking to overthrow their earthly uh those in power over them or to subvert them, Christians are to be good citizens, to submit to those in power, and not just not just to acquiesce, but to be ready for every good work. 00:03:49.599 --> 00:04:04.240 This is uh why Saint Augustine in the early church taught that Christians should be the best citizens of what other whatever country or nation they reside in, because we serve a king that is above every nation. 00:04:04.400 --> 00:04:11.520 And so we don't seek our own welfare, but the welfare of our neighbors and the nation that we live in. 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:28.480 Paul doesn't want, uh, he doesn't give reason here, but in other places, both he and Peter instruct that the church is not to be primarily focused on uh influencing the earthly government. 00:04:29.120 --> 00:04:35.360 We are to seek peace with those around us, both in authority and those who live around us. 00:04:35.519 --> 00:04:37.360 And he's and he gives a few reasons. 00:04:37.600 --> 00:04:51.680 First, excuse me, if we focus too much on influencing our local earthly authorities or governments, we shift our focus from the kingdom of God to the kingdom of this world. 00:04:51.839 --> 00:04:53.519 And that gets us off track. 00:04:53.759 --> 00:04:57.519 Second, it subverts God's own authority. 00:04:57.759 --> 00:04:59.839 Listen to what Paul writes in Romans 13. 00:04:59.920 --> 00:05:06.240 He says, There is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:14.720 Therefore, whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 00:05:14.959 --> 00:05:26.800 Remember the context where Paul is writing this in the first century world, living under the thumb of Rome and under the persecution of Israel, the nation of Israel itself. 00:05:27.199 --> 00:05:35.439 You see, what's motivating Paul is he wants us as Christians to see ourselves as representatives or ambassadors of the kingdom of God. 00:05:35.680 --> 00:05:40.480 We represent a kingdom that is not of this world at all times. 00:05:40.639 --> 00:05:58.399 That's why some Christians talk about living missionally, that all of our lives, whether you're in full-time ordained ministry or you're just an everyday Christian, we are all called to the mission of Jesus, and that is to represent and to be citizens of the kingdom in this wider world. 00:05:58.879 --> 00:06:09.199 And I think it's important in our own context to remember that this instruction is given to us no matter what political party is currently in power. 00:06:09.439 --> 00:06:14.720 Something for us to really think about and ponder in our highly polarized day. 00:06:15.040 --> 00:06:23.839 The only caveat Scripture gives us is when our earthly authorities instruct us to disobey God's word. 00:06:24.720 --> 00:06:36.480 Like in the first century, when they told Christians they had to worship the emperor as well as Jesus or whatever God you wanted to, Christians said, no, we worship one God alone, and they faced persecution. 00:06:36.720 --> 00:06:56.240 And so today, if and when our earthly authorities instruct us not to worship Jesus or to worship something else, or not to love our enemies, or to do something that is contrary to God's word, we will, with Peter, have to tell say that we are obligated to obey God rather than men. 00:06:56.959 --> 00:07:20.240 But not only are we to submit to our earthly authorities, we are not to speak evil of others, we're not to slander others, we're not to gossip, we're not to try to get behind someone's back through speaking evil against them, nor are we to be particularly argumentative or known as someone who is always making arguments or trouble. 00:07:22.079 --> 00:07:23.600 Let's see, where did we go? 00:07:23.839 --> 00:07:26.879 Rather, we're to be kind, gentle, and tolerant. 00:07:27.199 --> 00:07:36.800 And this phrase, he says, we are to be perfectly courteous, which is which means a kind of humility, which makes us treat others as better than ourselves. 00:07:36.959 --> 00:07:40.800 And we know Paul wrote about that in other places. 00:07:40.959 --> 00:08:03.040 So Paul wants us to live at peace, live at peace with our earthly authority over us and with our neighbors beside us, so that the gospel can go out, so that others can hear the good news of God's love, sacrifice, and mercy, and pledge allegiance to a different king and to a different kingdom. 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:05.759 But how are we as the church to do that? 00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:13.279 How was the church in that day able to do that in a world and a context that was sometimes hostile to Christians? 00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:15.519 Well, that brings us to our second point. 00:08:16.079 --> 00:08:19.360 Compassion breeds empathy, patience, and love. 00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:23.600 Listen to what Paul goes on to say in verse 3. 00:08:23.839 --> 00:08:30.639 Why are we to be perfectly courteous toward all people, including perhaps our non-Christian enemies? 00:08:30.959 --> 00:08:45.519 Because we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, and slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. 00:08:45.919 --> 00:08:47.679 What a description. 00:08:48.240 --> 00:08:58.320 See what Paul is saying is it's it's way easier to relate to someone if you have struggled with what they currently struggle with. 00:08:58.799 --> 00:09:05.120 This is such a basic principle, but it's powerful for us to be reminded of. 00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:12.080 Like most teenagers, um, I'm a parent of teenagers, and I once was a teenager. 00:09:12.240 --> 00:09:18.799 And I remember the days when I believed at, you know, 16 years old that I had it figured out. 00:09:18.960 --> 00:09:23.759 And that mom and dad were really behind the times and didn't know what they were talking about. 00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:30.720 It was only until years later, uh, as I grew older and experienced the world, and then myself became a parent. 00:09:30.879 --> 00:09:39.039 Every year I got older, I became more and more compassionate towards my mother and father who loved me well and sacrificed much for me. 00:09:39.200 --> 00:09:39.600 Amen. 00:09:39.840 --> 00:09:40.480 Anybody? 00:10:04.559 --> 00:10:06.480 I would never do that. 00:10:06.720 --> 00:10:07.759 Have you ever said that? 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:09.679 Ha ha, yes, you have. 00:10:10.879 --> 00:10:12.399 And I have too. 00:10:12.639 --> 00:10:16.000 The scriptures teach us that there is no distinction between people. 00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:18.879 We've all fallen short of the glory of God. 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:25.039 And it's only because of the grace of God that we stand righteous, united to Christ. 00:10:25.519 --> 00:10:28.559 And so look at the way Paul describes these non-Christians. 00:10:28.720 --> 00:10:33.519 He says they're foolish and disobedient, they're led astray and slaves to their passion. 00:10:33.679 --> 00:10:39.519 These are passive words, as if they don't have control over themselves. 00:10:39.919 --> 00:10:43.440 They are slaves to their sin, just as we once were. 00:10:43.600 --> 00:10:49.519 They live out their days in malice and envy, hating one another and being hated. 00:10:50.639 --> 00:10:59.440 As I read Paul's description slowly, what I find unexpectedly is that compassion rises in my heart. 00:11:00.799 --> 00:11:11.120 I remember that I was once a slave to my sins and my passions, and I didn't care much of anything for God. 00:11:13.919 --> 00:11:26.240 And so Paul's words, rather than moral outrage, pity rises as I look at others who struggle with uh with what I struggled with, and that's exactly Paul's intention. 00:11:26.399 --> 00:11:31.279 That leads us to point three, that God's love changes us. 00:11:32.080 --> 00:11:44.320 After reminding us that we too were once dead and our trespasses and sins, he goes on to say this but when goodness and loving kindness, the good and loving kindness of God appeared, he saved us. 00:11:44.559 --> 00:11:59.519 Not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, who he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ, our Savior. 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:07.120 This is one of the most beautiful and full descriptions of the gospel we have in the scriptures. 00:12:07.679 --> 00:12:20.320 You see, even while we were foolish and disobedient, even while we were led astray by the Spirit of the age, even while we were slaves to our passions and sins, God appeared. 00:12:20.879 --> 00:12:44.080 God's goodness and loving kindness, read Jesus, took on flesh and walked among us, giving himself over to the cross, to torture and death, separation from his father, and then resurrection for the dead for our forgiveness of sins and resurrection to new life. 00:12:45.519 --> 00:12:51.600 When we were God's enemies, when we were unlovable, God loved us. 00:12:52.240 --> 00:13:12.480 And so Paul says to us if you want to know how to love your enemies, if you want to know how to treat non-Christians who have a different worldview, have a different political persuasion, have a have very different opinions on social issues, if you want to know how to treat them, remember how God treated you. 00:13:13.120 --> 00:13:19.600 When you had very different opinions about the world than he does. 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:21.919 Now, for some of you, this may be difficult. 00:13:22.080 --> 00:13:27.440 There are some of you in this room who don't remember a day without Jesus. 00:13:27.600 --> 00:13:29.919 Don't remember a day not believing in him. 00:13:30.159 --> 00:13:33.440 And that's an incredibly beautiful and wonderful gift. 00:13:33.519 --> 00:13:37.679 I have some family members in my family who have that story. 00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:51.600 But all of us, whether you can remember the time before knowing Christ or not, we all, even as Christians, we know the tug of sin that remains in this mortal flesh, as Paul calls it. 00:13:51.759 --> 00:13:56.799 The temptation to sin every day, and not just the temptation, how we fall into sin. 00:13:57.440 --> 00:14:06.720 We fall into fear, we fall into temptation again and again, and so we run to Jesus in confession, why we confess every week. 00:14:06.879 --> 00:14:11.600 And we rejoice knowing that he has forgiven us, past, present, and future. 00:14:11.919 --> 00:14:17.039 That even in our sin, Jesus' heart towards us is compassionate. 00:14:17.360 --> 00:14:24.720 If you've ever read the book or haven't read the book, Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortland, I highly, highly recommend it. 00:14:24.799 --> 00:14:35.120 This is the thesis of the book that Jesus' attitude towards sinners is not condemnation, but compassion and mercy. 00:14:35.679 --> 00:14:43.279 And what Paul is telling us in this passage is that is to be the heart of God's people in the world. 00:14:45.120 --> 00:14:51.519 This is something I need to hear, something I need to be reminded of. 00:14:52.720 --> 00:14:54.879 But how do we actually do this?
