00:00:00.479 --> 00:00:05.360
We are in a sermon series in the book of Acts, and we've come to chapter 16.

00:00:06.240 --> 00:00:18.640
And as I reflected on this passage, it struck me that this book, right, we believe that scripture is God breathed, that this is a gift of God.

00:00:18.719 --> 00:00:22.000
It is living and active, the scriptures itself tell us.

00:00:22.079 --> 00:00:35.359
It came through the agency of human beings, and it bears that mark, and yet it is the divine word, and so it brings life, it brings comfort, it brings reproof and encouragement and shaping.

00:00:35.920 --> 00:00:39.840
And this book of Acts was given to the church for a number of reasons.

00:00:40.079 --> 00:00:42.079
One is that it continues the story, right?

00:00:42.159 --> 00:00:46.719
We have the four Gospels that tell the ministry of Jesus, his death and resurrection.

00:00:46.880 --> 00:00:54.640
Well, the book of Acts picks up where those gospels leave off and show the birth of this community that Jesus founded the church.

00:00:54.880 --> 00:01:03.280
It also shows how Jesus continued to lead, to guide, to comfort, to protect the church.

00:01:03.439 --> 00:01:10.159
Even though he is ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, he reigns actively in the church.

00:01:10.239 --> 00:01:14.239
And that is clear throughout the pages and verses of Acts.

00:01:15.359 --> 00:01:25.280
But Acts also was given to give us a picture of what it would look like for future generations to live in this unfolding story.

00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:32.719
We, those who have put our faith in Christ and follow Christ, walk in these same pages.

00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:48.799
And the author, Luke, and the divine author, God, described through the lives, the foibles, the successes, and the failures of these saints, what it might look like for us to follow in that same story.

00:01:48.959 --> 00:01:59.519
And I believe this chapter, chapter 16, puts in beautiful words and in a beautiful narrative what Jesus said would be true of his disciples.

00:01:59.680 --> 00:02:08.479
In Mark, Matthew 16, he said, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

00:02:08.960 --> 00:02:13.919
In other words, the pattern of the normal Christian life is cruciform.

00:02:16.639 --> 00:02:39.360
I think we'll touch on this later in the sermon, but I think many of us have inadvertently absorbed a light prosperity gospel where we believe that God's love and blessing is manifest in our life by success or good things, and that pain and suffering or hardships are a sign of God's disapproval.

00:02:39.520 --> 00:02:47.039
And I hope that you will see in this passage and then see throughout the scriptures that that is absolutely not what the scriptures teach.

00:02:47.520 --> 00:02:58.960
That if we follow in Jesus' footsteps as his disciples, then we will follow him into a fellowship of his sufferings.

00:02:59.280 --> 00:03:06.240
And this is vital, brothers and sisters, for us to live and to walk the normal Christian life.

00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:18.080
Because if you're like me, I often get tripped up in suffering, wondering what I've done wrong and what God is trying to work out of me or correct me.

00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:22.400
So that's what we're going to be looking at this morning.

00:03:22.479 --> 00:03:30.240
And I want to, as we begin, I want to give credit to a particular author and theologian where some of these central ideas came from.

00:03:30.319 --> 00:03:35.919
Named Paul Miller, he wrote a book called The J Curve, Dying and Rising with Jesus in Everyday Life.

00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:37.840
And I highly commend that book to you.

00:03:37.919 --> 00:03:42.479
But that's where the title of this sermon and kind of the central themes come from.

00:03:42.639 --> 00:03:48.800
But as we as we jump in, let me read a short portion of chapter 16.

00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:54.080
Acts chapter 16, 19 to 24.

00:03:55.840 --> 00:04:05.199
But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.

00:04:05.439 --> 00:04:11.520
And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city.

00:04:11.680 --> 00:04:16.399
They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice.

00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:23.839
The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them, gave orders to beat them with rods.

00:04:24.079 --> 00:04:31.600
And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely.

00:04:31.759 --> 00:04:37.199
Having received this order, he put them in the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.

00:04:37.360 --> 00:04:38.879
This is the word of God.

00:04:40.319 --> 00:04:41.279
Thanks be to God.

00:04:41.360 --> 00:04:42.319
Let's pray for a second.

00:04:42.560 --> 00:04:51.040
Father in heaven, by your Spirit, what we ask as we look at your word is that you would speak to our hearts, each of us individually.

00:04:51.279 --> 00:04:53.839
Tell us what we need to hear this morning.

00:04:54.079 --> 00:04:57.120
For we ask it with thanksgiving in Jesus' name.

00:04:57.439 --> 00:04:58.079
Amen.

00:04:59.040 --> 00:05:11.920
Point one, throughout our Christian lives, Jesus will purposefully lead us into small deaths as a fellowship in his sufferings.

00:05:12.639 --> 00:05:20.319
As we talk about this, I want to frame it with this question: How do you tend to interpret suffering in your own life?

00:05:21.839 --> 00:05:30.879
When suffering or hardship, unexpected disappointment comes into your life, how do you respond?

00:05:31.279 --> 00:05:32.399
Let's look at Paul.

00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:50.399
In chapter 15, the chapter before this, when Paul experienced a great success at the Jerusalem Council, he kind of won, along with some other disciples, kind of a theological debate that really would bless and help the church, even to this very day.

00:05:50.720 --> 00:06:05.040
From the council, he took a friend Silas and he began to visit a lot of the newly planted churches that he and Barnabas had planted on their missionary journey, and he went encouraging and strengthening the churches along the way.

00:06:05.199 --> 00:06:13.199
On that time, he's also continuing to preach the gospel that the kingdom of God is come and the king of the universe is Jesus.

00:06:13.360 --> 00:06:22.800
And in that, uh coming to the city of Philippi, we're told was a leading city in this region, uh, kind of like Atlanta in the southeast, right?

00:06:22.879 --> 00:06:27.040
It's the most prominent city in this region, and it was a Roman colony.

00:06:27.920 --> 00:06:36.160
While he was there proclaiming the gospel, a wealthy merchant woman named Lydia received the gospel.

00:06:36.240 --> 00:06:39.279
And this was this was a great win for the gospel.

00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:47.439
She was uh prominent in the area, she was known, she was wealthy, she could help this brand new church be built there.

00:06:48.160 --> 00:07:00.399
Uh, as Paul and Silas are going about their business for a few days, we're told a slave girl who had a spirit of divination or a demon of divination that had possessed her.

00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:04.720
It allowed her to kind of know things or predict the future.

00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:16.240
Uh, she was following them around, and for whatever reason, she was shouting behind them, these men have been sent by the Most High God, and they proclaim the way of salvation to you.

00:07:17.360 --> 00:07:19.360
We have no idea why she was doing that.

00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:25.279
Maybe she thought she was being helpful, maybe she was actually trying to divert what they were doing.

00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:29.920
For whatever reason, this happened for a number of days, and finally Paul had had enough.

00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:50.160
And whether it was compassion for this poor girl, uh oppressed by a demon and being exploited by her slave owners, uh, or whether he was just, frankly, annoyed at this happening for so long, he cast the demon out, and she was freed from this demon possession.

00:07:50.399 --> 00:07:58.240
But what we're told and where we picked up in the story is that the girl's owners were not happy.

00:07:58.399 --> 00:08:02.319
They had just lost a huge source of their income.

00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:03.600
And so what do they do?

00:08:03.759 --> 00:08:12.480
They go to the magistrate, the leaders, the political leaders of Philippi, and they weave a false narrative against them.

00:08:12.639 --> 00:08:13.839
First, what do they say?

00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:15.279
These guys are Jews.

00:08:15.519 --> 00:08:18.000
All right, one big strike against them.

00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:26.160
Two, they're proclaiming things that we as Romans are not allowed to believe, practices we find reprehensible.

00:08:26.319 --> 00:08:31.600
They are troublemakers and they're labeled disturbers of the peace.

00:08:32.320 --> 00:08:36.559
So, as we heard, the magistrates, you know, the whole crowd gets whipped up into a frenzy.

00:08:36.720 --> 00:08:50.879
They're beaten, their clothes are ripped off, they're thrown into prison, and this little detail at the end, the the jailer trying to do his very best, puts them in the inner sanctum of the prison, and he puts their feet in the stocks.

00:08:51.600 --> 00:09:02.639
And if you know what those are, they are they're wooden bait planks, basically with holes in them, and they they would put them on you to lock your legs in a position that was painful.

00:09:03.039 --> 00:09:07.279
So not only are you in prison, but you're constantly in pain, right?

00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:10.399
It's adding insult to injury.

00:09:10.559 --> 00:09:18.399
And so my question, as I read this, is what did Paul and Silas do to deserve this?

00:09:21.519 --> 00:09:24.399
What questions would you be asking in this scenario?

00:09:26.080 --> 00:09:34.879
You've been going about God's work, you've seen success, you've seen people come to faith, you're seeking to be faithful, and how are you repaid?

00:09:36.559 --> 00:09:45.679
Greedy, exploitative pagans lie and cheat, and have you thrown in prison unjustly?

00:09:45.840 --> 00:09:48.799
I know where my head and where my heart often goes.

00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:50.960
Why is this happening, Lord?

00:09:51.600 --> 00:09:53.279
What did I do to deserve this?

00:09:53.440 --> 00:09:54.960
Are you punishing me for something?

00:09:55.120 --> 00:09:58.240
I thought I was walking in your will.

00:09:59.039 --> 00:10:00.320
But here's what's amazing.

00:10:00.480 --> 00:10:05.759
What are we told right after that section that we read?

00:10:05.919 --> 00:10:15.360
In verse 25, Luke writes, About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God in prison.

00:10:16.559 --> 00:10:19.200
And the prisoners were listening.

00:10:20.960 --> 00:10:23.679
So my question is, how is this possible?

00:10:23.919 --> 00:10:34.879
How are Paul and Silas falsely accused, beaten, put in stocks, in prison, and about midnight they are praying and singing hymns to God?

00:10:35.919 --> 00:10:50.320
Well, the answer as you look at Paul's life, uh kind of described throughout different parts of the New Testament, is that he had learned, Paul had learned through previous experiences how Jesus works.

00:10:50.639 --> 00:10:59.120
He had learned from Jesus' own teachings, from what we said earlier, those who follow Jesus will have to deny themselves, take up their crosses, and follow him.

00:10:59.279 --> 00:11:06.399
And he had learned that the path that we walk as followers of Christ is the same path that Jesus walked.

00:11:06.879 --> 00:11:14.080
A path that descends into death and then by the power of God is resurrected on the other side.

00:11:14.480 --> 00:11:23.360
Now hear me clearly, Jesus' death was redemptive and salvific, it saved all of God's people.

00:11:24.080 --> 00:11:28.879
Our suffering doesn't save anyone, let alone ourselves.

00:11:29.200 --> 00:11:37.919
And yet the pattern of our lives, Jesus teaches us, will mimic and reflect his own.

00:11:38.559 --> 00:12:05.840
So listen to what Paul says about 12 years later, 15 years later, in the letter he will write to this very church, the church in Philippi, he says, I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, to become becoming like him in his death, so that somehow, so somehow to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

00:12:06.080 --> 00:12:26.879
I think what Paul is trying to teach the Philippians, what he's teaching us, and what we see in this story, is that we who anticipate and long for the power of God's resurrection in our own lives will also experience a fellowship in Jesus' sufferings.

00:12:27.039 --> 00:12:34.559
That those two things, just as they cannot be separated in Jesus' life and ministry, they cannot be separated in ours.

00:12:35.039 --> 00:12:41.759
And again, I think this is a teaching that has often been missed in our evangelical Christianity.

00:12:42.399 --> 00:12:48.320
And it's one that we need to come back to so that we can actually make sense of what we experience.

00:12:48.399 --> 00:12:52.960
Because this is how Jesus works in his church.

00:12:53.200 --> 00:12:55.120
All right, that brings us to point two.

00:12:55.519 --> 00:12:58.240
Resurrection life is born in the tomb.

00:12:59.200 --> 00:13:19.759
Just as Jesus died, his sacrificial death for us, so that his resurrection life might be born in us, and through us, those around us, so we experience suffering in our lives, so that others might be blessed through us.

00:13:20.399 --> 00:13:24.639
Paul's and Silas' resurrection begins in their hearts, right?

00:13:25.440 --> 00:13:41.679
Because in the face of evil and the face of suffering, they know and remember that Jesus is Lord, seated at the right hand of God in heaven, they can rejoice that nothing happens to them on earth that is not under his lordship.

00:13:42.720 --> 00:13:48.399
And so even in that moment, resurrection is born, joy is born in them.

00:13:48.559 --> 00:13:51.120
Now Paul knew at this point that the Lord was at work.

00:13:51.200 --> 00:14:03.279
He didn't know how things would play out, but he trusted that the Lord knew what he was doing, that he was, the Lord was good, and the Lord was working good in this situation.

00:14:04.320 --> 00:14:13.759
And through their singing in the midst of unjust suffering, both the prisoners and the jailer is observing what they're doing.

00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:16.320
And then God brings an earthquake.

00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:37.200
And through this earthquake, God vindicates Paul and Silas, and we don't have enough time to get into this, but everyone in this context, the jailer, the prisoners, the magistrates, those living in Philippi, would have seen and interpreted this random event as a statement from the divine.

00:14:38.080 --> 00:14:46.879
And as the earthquake comes, the doors to the prisons open, the fasteners, the chains fall off, the stocks fall off.

00:14:47.679 --> 00:14:49.440
This is God's work.

00:14:49.759 --> 00:14:59.200
And the jailer, maybe after he comes to or is able to, he goes into the prison and he sees that the doors are open and he doesn't see any prisoners.

00:14:59.279 --> 00:15:02.559
So he assumes that everyone has escaped under his watch.

00:15:02.639 --> 00:15:19.039
And so, as was sort of the custom, uh, failing to do his job, he takes out his sword and he's about to kill himself, take his own life as a as a lack, loss of honor, uh, when Paul cries out, No, we're here.

00:15:19.440 --> 00:15:21.440
Don't don't kill yourself.

00:15:22.080 --> 00:15:30.080
And in uh overwhelmed by disbelief and relief, this jailer falls at Paul's feet.

00:15:30.720 --> 00:15:35.600
And he says, What must I do to be saved?

00:15:36.399 --> 00:15:40.399
In other words, he says, Who the heck are you guys?

00:15:41.840 --> 00:15:43.600
And how are you like this?

00:15:44.879 --> 00:15:58.879
You see, to this Roman, he understood by the hymns and the prayers that Paul and Silas were singing and praying that he worshipped a God that this jailer did not know, but he desperately wanted to.

00:16:00.799 --> 00:16:08.559
And so Paul responds, believe in the Lord Jesus, you will be saved, you and your household.

00:16:09.440 --> 00:16:22.639
The soldier ends up taking Paul and Silas into his home, washing his wounds, they eat together, they rejoice, the jailer is baptized, along with his whole family, and they rejoice.

00:16:23.279 --> 00:16:25.279
The story is incredible.

00:16:25.840 --> 00:16:28.879
Finally, the magistrates get wind of what's happened, right?

00:16:28.960 --> 00:16:31.120
This earthquake has shook the city.

00:16:31.360 --> 00:16:38.639
Um, you know, these these two prisoners who they've unjustly thrown into prison are released, and so they try to sweep things under the rug.

00:16:38.799 --> 00:16:40.799
They say, just let them go, right?

00:16:40.960 --> 00:16:42.480
All charges are dropped.

00:16:43.360 --> 00:16:45.759
But Paul wisely says, no.

00:16:48.080 --> 00:16:49.519
We're Roman citizens.

00:16:49.679 --> 00:16:51.120
We're not to be treated this way.

00:16:51.279 --> 00:16:53.919
So we would like the magistrates to come to the prison.

00:16:54.080 --> 00:16:59.440
We would like a formal apology, and then we would like to be released.

00:16:59.840 --> 00:17:01.200
And the magistrates do it.

00:17:01.279 --> 00:17:02.559
They have no other choice.

00:17:02.720 --> 00:17:10.720
Now they're afraid of their own reputations being further tarnished because of what has happened.

00:17:11.839 --> 00:17:19.599
You see, Paul was going about his faithful work when the Lord intentionally brought him into a fellowship of his sufferings.

00:17:20.319 --> 00:17:24.319
It was unjust, it was unforeseen, it was painful.

00:17:25.920 --> 00:17:28.480
And yet he did not cry out.

00:17:29.200 --> 00:17:31.200
He did not defend himself.

00:17:31.759 --> 00:17:41.759
And because he was a resurrection man, and because he had experienced this in the past, and he writes about it in his letters, he knew that the Lord was at work.

00:17:42.480 --> 00:17:44.720
He didn't have to fight, but he watches.

00:17:45.200 --> 00:17:48.960
He sings, he trusts, and he waits.

00:17:49.680 --> 00:18:04.400
Because he knows as Jesus has led him into death, it is Jesus who will resurrect him in his time, just as Jesus said, uh, my life is not taken from me, it is given freely, and the Father will resurrect me on the third day.

00:18:04.559 --> 00:18:06.079
And that's exactly what the Lord does.

00:18:06.240 --> 00:18:11.519
He acts, he vindicates Paul and Silas, protects this newborn church, right?

00:18:11.680 --> 00:18:15.200
So the theologians wrestle with why is Paul silent at the beginning?

00:18:15.359 --> 00:18:18.720
He doesn't declare his citizenship, but he brings it up at the end.

00:18:18.960 --> 00:18:24.319
The only logical explanation is that he intentionally is protecting the church in Philippi.

00:18:25.119 --> 00:18:36.240
And we won't have time to get into that, but he suffers in love for this church, and through that willing suffering, God works through it to bring new life.

00:18:36.559 --> 00:18:47.440
Resurrection life in the heart of Paul and Silas and new life into the jailer's heart, and who knows how many prisoners and others, the the jailer's whole family.

00:18:47.759 --> 00:18:49.359
So that brings us to point three.

00:18:49.599 --> 00:18:53.519
Dying and rising with Jesus is the pattern of the Christian life.

00:18:53.599 --> 00:19:00.960
We've seen it here in the life of Paul and Silas, but it's the same for all who follow Jesus today.

00:19:01.119 --> 00:19:08.720
The Lord brings us into our own fellowship in Christ's sufferings, not because he is punishing us or mad at us.

00:19:08.960 --> 00:19:15.279
He loves you completely if you are Christian, if you are in Christ.

00:19:15.440 --> 00:19:19.839
He has died for all of your sins, past, present, and future.

00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:27.839
There is no retribution, there is no condemnation for any suffering that you experience in your life.

00:19:28.559 --> 00:19:45.680
But the scriptures tell us that God does bring us into this fellowship of suffering to shape us, to free us of idolatries and false lords and gods, and help us to fall more deeply in love with Him.

00:19:46.480 --> 00:20:01.680
And for those of us who have experienced that and walked through that pattern a number of times, we begin to see and experience suffering in a new way so that we can endure it with patience, expectation, and hope.

00:20:02.160 --> 00:20:10.079
And then, as the Lord allows, we become conduits of God's grace to others around us.

00:20:10.240 --> 00:20:14.640
And I believe this is exactly what Paul is describing in 2 Corinthians chapter 1.

00:20:14.720 --> 00:20:15.200
Listen to this.

00:20:15.279 --> 00:20:34.240
He said, Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion, and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort comfort we ourselves have received from God.

00:20:34.640 --> 00:20:43.599
For just as the suffering of Christ flows over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

00:20:43.839 --> 00:20:48.880
If we are distressed, it is for your comfort, Corinthians, and salvation.

00:20:49.200 --> 00:20:58.480
If we are comforted, it is for for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance and the same sufferings we suffer.

00:20:58.720 --> 00:21:02.960
And then he goes on to tell the Corinthians, others will be comforted through you.

00:21:04.720 --> 00:21:15.119
Beloved, the foundation of all that we're talking about, this dying and rising with Christ, begins with this: that you in Christ are a beloved son or daughter of God.

00:21:15.839 --> 00:21:17.039
He loves you deeply.

00:21:17.359 --> 00:21:23.359
He loves you so much that he wants to conform you to the image of his son, Jesus Christ.

00:21:23.680 --> 00:21:26.720
And that path follows Jesus' path.

00:21:27.039 --> 00:21:31.759
A path through death and suffering, but resurrection life.

00:21:32.640 --> 00:21:44.799
And my hope for us as a community is that as we hear this message and we experience the hardship of this life, we will do so in a greater amount of hope and resurrection life.

00:21:45.279 --> 00:21:56.880
And as we experience God's comfort, we will be that conduit as a community to those around us, our brothers and sisters in Christ, so that others may know and celebrate our Lord as well.

00:21:57.359 --> 00:21:58.480
Let's pray.

00:21:59.119 --> 00:22:00.799
Our Father and our God.

00:22:06.079 --> 00:22:09.920
Just as we prayed heavy prayers earlier in the service.

00:22:11.359 --> 00:22:18.160
Lord, we thank you that you love us more than we can imagine, more than we could dream.

00:22:18.799 --> 00:22:34.720
And Lord, though we don't always understand it, we thank you that you work in our lives through leading us into a fellowship of Christ's suffering so that Christ's resurrection life may be born in us, and through us would be born in others.

00:22:34.960 --> 00:22:38.559
Oh Lord, teach us to sing in prison.

00:22:39.519 --> 00:22:42.480
And we long for the day of resurrection.

00:22:42.720 --> 00:22:44.079
We pray in Jesus' name.

00:22:44.240 --> 00:22:44.720
Amen.
