29. 00:00:12.640 --> 00:00:17.519 It's after Peter has arrived here at Cornelius who had sent for him. 00:00:17.600 --> 00:00:23.920 And so verse 29, Acts 10, 29, so when I was sent for, as Peter speaking, I came without objection. 00:00:24.079 --> 00:00:26.399 I asked then why you sent for me. 00:00:26.640 --> 00:00:39.920 And Cornelius said, Four days ago, about this hour, I was praying my house at the ninth hour, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing and said, Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms have been remembered before God. 00:00:40.159 --> 00:01:03.520 --> 00:01:10.480 And that's what we're seeing in Acts 9, the conversion of Paul, and then now Acts 10, the conversion of Cornelius is conversions. 00:01:10.640 --> 00:01:21.840 Point number one, gospel conversion comes through God's pursuit, God's pursuit of our lost and weary hearts. 00:01:22.400 --> 00:01:27.200 In 2018, Kim Kardashian, she was at New York Met Gala, I'm sure you remember it. 00:01:27.280 --> 00:01:28.319 She took this picture. 00:01:28.480 --> 00:01:30.799 She was wearing a gold Versace dress. 00:01:30.959 --> 00:01:33.840 She took this picture next to a gold Egyptian coffin. 00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:35.920 Didn't think it was that big of a deal when she took the picture. 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:36.879 She put it out there on the internet. 00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:38.560 The thing goes viral. 00:01:38.719 --> 00:01:53.439 Now what the Met did not know, the Met who owned the Egyptian, they sort of thought they owned the Egyptian coffin, was that this first century, first century BC coffin had been stolen and belonged to Egypt. 00:01:53.840 --> 00:02:08.159 So, but this picture goes viral, and one of the thieves sitting in the Middle East, who never got paid for being in that gang of people who dug it up out of the ground during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, he never got paid. 00:02:08.240 --> 00:02:14.319 And so he sees this picture and he's mad because he never got paid, and so he tips off the New York DA who oversees art theft. 00:02:14.400 --> 00:02:28.000 And sure enough, this coffin had been dug out of the ground, smuggled to the UAE, then to Germany, fake documents drawn up to make it look like it had been exported legally in 1971 out of Egypt. 00:02:28.159 --> 00:02:31.120 And then the coffin goes to an art dealer in France. 00:02:31.199 --> 00:02:34.800 The art dealer sells it to the Met for$4 million. 00:02:35.360 --> 00:02:36.800 The thief never got anything. 00:02:36.879 --> 00:02:37.599 He's upset. 00:02:37.680 --> 00:02:43.680 And so, sure enough, the story comes out, and the Met, kind enough, sends it back to Egypt. 00:02:43.759 --> 00:02:52.080 And here it is now in Cairo, this gold coffin, which a priest, I'm sure his shirt was tucked in, is inside the coffin. 00:02:52.560 --> 00:02:56.240 Now, what I love about this story is it's interesting, right? 00:02:56.319 --> 00:02:57.360 It's kind of an interesting story. 00:02:57.439 --> 00:03:02.560 But what I love about it is just like the many conversions that this coffin goes through, right? 00:03:02.879 --> 00:03:16.560 It's a forgotten coffin in the ground, and then it becomes a smuggled good, and then it becomes expensive artwork, and then finally it becomes priceless cultural artifact, right? 00:03:16.719 --> 00:03:20.719 Converting from one thing to another thing. 00:03:20.879 --> 00:03:24.080 And yet it's still sort of who it was. 00:03:24.479 --> 00:03:27.840 So Peter says to Cornelius, why did you sin for me? 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:28.960 Why did you sin for me? 00:03:29.120 --> 00:03:31.439 Cornelius says, Well, I had a vision, so I sent for you. 00:03:31.680 --> 00:03:32.560 Pretty simple. 00:03:32.879 --> 00:03:36.000 In other words, God sparked in me, right? 00:03:36.159 --> 00:03:38.479 Cornelius had the vision and then he sent, right? 00:03:38.639 --> 00:03:41.840 So God sparked in me the desire to seek. 00:03:42.080 --> 00:03:43.599 And that's profound. 00:03:44.400 --> 00:03:55.360 See, your desire to seek and my desire to seek God, or even our wrestling with God's absence, is a sign of God's pursuit of us. 00:03:57.039 --> 00:04:05.680 Pastor and author Tim Keller says even a sense of God's absence is a sense of God's presence. 00:04:06.639 --> 00:04:07.919 You can just chew on that. on a mission to bring Cornelius home, to convert him, to have a conversion, to move him from one thing to another thing. 00:04:25.519 --> 00:04:34.240 British pastor Martin Lloyd Jones, we looked at this definition and thought about conversion when we studied Acts 9 weeks ago before Lent. 00:04:36.240 --> 00:04:43.600 Conversion is the first exercise of the new nature in ceasing from old forms of life and starting a new life. 00:04:43.839 --> 00:04:51.439 It is the first action of the regenerate soul in moving from something to something. 00:04:52.480 --> 00:05:08.399 As we mature in the Christian faith, probably what you're discovering, or you will soon, is that so much of that big decision making you were making about you're going to give your life to God and walk the aisle and give your life to Christ, all of which is really important, maybe huge marking moments for you, right? 00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:12.560 All of that is by God's grace and mercy to us. 00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:17.680 See, the activity of God's grace through the Holy Spirit reveals our need of Christ. 00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:21.199 Our seeking is a result of his seeking. 00:05:21.600 --> 00:05:26.160 Here's what we said when we studied Acts 9, to get a little technical, nerd out, just a little bit. 00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:31.199 Regeneration, God's grace to us, our soul being regenerated. 00:05:31.439 --> 00:05:38.240 Regeneration is the implantation by the Holy Spirit of new life in the soul. 00:05:39.360 --> 00:05:43.759 Conversion, many of you maybe have a conversion experience. 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:49.600 Conversion is the experience of that regeneration as repentance and faith. 00:05:49.920 --> 00:06:02.000 And what that means is it means our pursuit of Him is always rooted in His pursuit of us, which is amazing good news because it pulls out pride and it pulls out anxiety. 00:06:02.879 --> 00:06:06.319 I heard this 18th-century Lutheran hymn this week. 00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:18.800 Lord, 'tis not that I did choose thee, that I know could never be, for this heart would still refuse thee, had thy grace not chosen me. 00:06:20.160 --> 00:06:29.360 Now back to verse 31, Acts 10, the angel said, Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms have been remembered before God. 00:06:29.519 --> 00:06:33.680 Send therefore to Joppa and ask Simon for Simon, who is called Peter. 00:06:33.839 --> 00:06:42.480 So point number two is gospel conversion is a transformation out of moral merit and religiosity. 00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:44.720 And here's how we see this. 00:06:44.879 --> 00:06:51.680 Cornelius, he's praying, he's giving money away, he's doing everything right. 00:06:52.399 --> 00:06:57.920 And God says to this guy who has the righteousness report, he has it. 00:06:58.480 --> 00:07:14.399 He's like Paul in chapter 9, and now he's the Gentile in chapter 10, but he still is doing everything right, and to him, God says, Yeah, you, even the good, moral, religious person, you need a conversion. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:19.279 Here's how we can think about it morality, which we're all for. 00:07:19.360 --> 00:07:20.560 We are all for morality. 00:07:20.800 --> 00:07:21.600 Morality, right? 00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:24.800 Keeps us from destruction, keeps society going forward. 00:07:25.040 --> 00:07:29.120 Morality is the goodness of what is true and right. 00:07:30.240 --> 00:07:31.360 We are moral people. 00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:33.040 We are for morality. 00:07:33.680 --> 00:07:36.879 But moralism, that's something different. 00:07:37.279 --> 00:07:47.439 Moralism is trying to be loved and accepted by God or worthy as a person by the record of your own morals. 00:07:48.399 --> 00:07:53.199 So some call this works righteousness, some people call this a performance-oriented life. 00:07:53.360 --> 00:08:10.639 It's the long list of moral expectations, the to-do list piled onto you once you become a Christian, as if if you do all of it, keep all of it, maintain all of it, then on a Tuesday morning, then you're okay with God. 00:08:10.800 --> 00:08:16.319 Then God can love you or keep loving you, and you're making him happy. 00:08:17.439 --> 00:08:24.800 And in this way, moralism is all over churches, and it is exhausting. 00:08:26.160 --> 00:08:39.200 Moralism usually turns us prideful, judgmental, self-righteous, lacking compassion, and ultimately exhausted because we are not perfect. 00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:42.000 We're not always moral. 00:08:42.879 --> 00:08:48.799 And in this way we see that both the rebel and the religious need a conversion. 00:08:49.039 --> 00:08:56.000 Both of us are burdened, exhausted, and in need of Christ's full forgiveness and full righteousness to us. 00:08:56.399 --> 00:09:02.399 As we say, he who knew no sin became sin, that we might become the righteousness of God. 00:09:02.799 --> 00:09:09.279 Now, if we jump back to when Peter arrives at Cornelius' house, now remember Cornelius is a Gentile. 00:09:09.440 --> 00:09:10.799 I don't want to skip over that. 00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:20.240 This is quite the moment in the book of Acts where the gospel is extending beyond the Jewish people, extending to people that the Jewish people actually despised. 00:09:20.559 --> 00:09:25.600 They thought Gentiles, non-Jews, were dogs that were despise, lesser than, to be avoided. 00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:32.879 And God is just leading this revolution out in the book of Acts to welcome the outsider. 00:09:33.840 --> 00:09:35.759 Point number three is that. 00:09:41.919 --> 00:09:48.399 When Peter walks into that house, Cornelius bows down, almost worshiping Peter. 00:09:48.480 --> 00:09:50.159 And Peter said, No, no, no, no, no, get up. 00:09:50.240 --> 00:09:52.000 You know, like don't worship me. 00:09:52.159 --> 00:09:53.519 Don't misread this. 00:09:53.840 --> 00:09:55.279 Acts 10, 26. 00:09:55.440 --> 00:09:59.039 But Peter lifted him up, saying, Stand up, I too am a man. 00:09:59.360 --> 00:10:11.279 And as he talked with him, he went in and found many persons gathered, and he said to them, You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation. 00:10:11.600 --> 00:10:11.919 Right? 00:10:12.080 --> 00:10:14.559 So there's the cultural reality. 00:10:15.600 --> 00:10:21.840 And Peter says, But God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean. 00:10:22.399 --> 00:10:24.960 So when I was sent for, I came without objection. 00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:27.840 I asked then why you sent for me. 00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:34.639 Theologian John Stott, he wrote this about this passage, these exact verses. 00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:46.000 Says, Peter had just now repudiated both extreme and opposite attitudes which human beings have sometimes adopted towards one another. 00:10:46.240 --> 00:11:00.000 He had come to see that it was entirely inappropriate either to worship somebody as divine, which Cornelius had tried to do to him, or to reject somebody as if unclean, which he would previously have done to Cornelius. 00:11:00.399 --> 00:11:08.159 Peter refused both to be treated by Cornelius as if he were God and to treat Cornelius as if he were a dog. 00:11:09.519 --> 00:11:10.559 That's amazing. 00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:16.240 That's an amazing revolution of how we view the other and the next person. 00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:25.759 When Peter began to tell Cornelius about God's love for him, provision of Jesus as the final sacrifice. 00:11:26.080 --> 00:11:34.559 Peter began that by saying in Acts 10, 34, so Peter opened his mouth and said, Truly, I understand that God shows no partiality. 00:11:35.519 --> 00:11:38.240 Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 00:15:01.120 --> 00:15:08.000 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed because the gift of the Holy Spirit was being hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. 00:15:17.039 --> 00:15:23.039 Then Peter declared, Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we 00:15:32.879 Point number four, a little bit of a long point here, kind of a summary point. 00:15:33.039 --> 00:15:33.679 Point number four. 00:15:33.919 --> 00:15:47.679 Conversion is by God's initiative, like we talked about at the beginning, with the gift of the Holy Spirit, verse 44, in the hearing of the word, verse 44, resulting in praise to God, there in verse 46. 00:15:48.559 --> 00:15:51.840 Now we covered speaking in tongues back in Acts chapter 2. 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:54.720 I'm not going to redo that for another 15 minutes. 00:15:54.960 --> 00:16:08.320 But tongues here is combined with praise, teaching us that there's no language, there's no culture, there's no people that is God's preference. 00:16:09.200 --> 00:16:16.960 Which means God is for us and all of our preferences, and we have a ton of them, and they're in full operation this morning right now. 00:16:17.600 --> 00:16:24.960 And God is also for that culture and that person and that people group, of came up. 00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:44.160 This 40-year-old guy, you know, I thought he was so old, a real old guy, he got up, sharing his testimony, and boy, whoo, it was a doozy. 00:18:44.319 --> 00:18:50.319 And he goes into it, and it's like he's a horrible addict and thief and affairs. 00:18:50.400 --> 00:18:52.880 I mean, it was quite the tale of debauchery. 00:18:53.039 --> 00:18:54.400
