00:01:59.519 Winston's dad, Winston Sr., was a lawyer at the Pentagon. 00:01:59.680 --> 00:02:08.800 And then after serving there for a little while, he decided to head on down to Mobile, Alabama to complete his life as a lawyer doing a little bit more relaxed law than in the Pentagon. 00:02:08.960 --> 00:02:09.919 Now, Winston Jr. 00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:15.039 thought that he would want to be a serving in the Army ROTC while he was there. 00:02:20.719 --> 00:02:26.879 And interestingly enough, he didn't fall in love with law when he was at Alabama, but he actually fell in love with writing last time me and Bubba would talk, I would have thought of something better to say. 00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:43.519 So over the next four weeks, we're gonna be preaching through the book of 2 Timothy. 00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:45.600 And here's what's going on during this book. 00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:49.920 Timothy is a young man, newly ordained pastor at the church of Ephesus. 00:05:50.079 --> 00:05:51.439 Remember that little book Ephesians? 00:05:51.600 --> 00:05:52.480 Ephesus. 00:05:52.720 --> 00:06:01.360 Pastoring a church that's suffering, that's divided, that's arguing over theological issues, facing some pretty serious false teaching. 00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:09.120 Nero, the Roman emperor, is ruling and instituting some of the most brutal and intense persecution against Christians in all of history. 00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:12.639 Our boy that wrote this, Paul, is not in a great spot either. 00:06:12.800 --> 00:06:18.319 He's in uh Rome, had just been arrested again, and is in a little prison cell that looks a little bit like this. 00:06:19.040 --> 00:06:24.879 This is the Mamertine prison in Rome, where he wrote this letter that we have before us today, 2 Timothy. 00:06:24.959 --> 00:06:30.160 That's also the prison that's kind of historically agreed upon that Peter was killed in as well. 00:06:30.399 --> 00:06:35.759 So he writes his last letter we read, and even before that we see kind of his heart in it. 00:06:35.920 --> 00:06:39.920 So in 2 Timothy chapter 4, verses 6 through 7, he says this. 00:06:40.079 --> 00:06:41.199 This is Paul. 00:06:41.439 --> 00:06:46.959 For I'm already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 00:06:47.120 --> 00:06:51.920 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have kept the faith. 00:06:52.480 --> 00:06:56.079 So he writes the last letter we'd ever read of Paul. 00:06:56.480 --> 00:06:59.680 The last letter he might have believed he would write. 00:07:00.160 --> 00:07:08.000 Paul, to this point, had given his life over to the proclamation of the gospel, the planting of churches, and ultimately, most importantly, the glory of Jesus Christ. 00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:11.759 And all of a sudden, these churches he had seen flourished or struggling. 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:22.160 A young pastor is leading the church at Ephesus, and I think Paul has serious concerns that the gospel might be dwindling, and that the church itself might dwindle. 00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:30.240 So that's where we find ourselves at Paul's last will and testament to Timothy and to the Big C church. 00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:34.319 Remember what Forrest said as he reflected back on his time with Bubba? 00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:39.279 If I had known this was the last time, I would have thought of something better to say. 00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:41.120 Why? 00:07:42.240 --> 00:07:45.120 Because he knows the weight of the last word. 00:07:45.839 --> 00:07:48.560 I believe Paul did too as he wrote this to Timothy. 00:07:48.720 --> 00:07:58.480 He knew the weight, and as he wrote this in this cold, lonely, smelly dungeon in Rome, I think we can feel his urgency. 00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:07.759 Now, the big question we need to ask before we can really make sense of this book is why did Paul feel the need to write a second book to Timothy, a second letter. 00:08:07.920 --> 00:08:24.240 So it's generally agreed upon that there's one big focus, and this is gonna be the lens that we read this book for the next four weeks, the lens that we see everything Paul writes, and it's this hard things are coming, the world is gonna try to pull you in every other direction, but guard the gospel. 00:08:25.040 --> 00:08:26.240 Guard the gospel. 00:08:26.480 --> 00:08:31.360 And if we're honest, y'all know this, we're in a really tough cultural moment right now, aren't we? 00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:38.399 The political sphere over the last four years has been insanely divided, maybe more than in any other time in US history. 00:08:38.559 --> 00:08:43.360 Each side believes that the other side is wrong and misinformed and unintelligible. 00:08:43.519 --> 00:08:47.759 Millennials and Gen Zers are walking out the back doors of the church more than ever before. 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:55.519 The sexual ethic of the Bible is seen as barbaric and outdated, and Christians as a whole are typically seen as misinformed and simple-minded. 00:08:55.840 --> 00:09:00.080 The overall message that the world is giving is this: be yourself, just be true to you. 00:09:00.320 --> 00:09:05.039 Find your innermost deep desires and chase after those, and if anyone tells you otherwise, cancel them. 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:14.080 This message is essentially saying, hey, once you find your deepest desire, your deepest longing, even if it's to your own destruction, chase after it. 00:09:14.320 --> 00:09:18.080 And here's the message of the gospel that Paul is laying out for us. 00:09:18.320 --> 00:09:25.440 Once you deny yourself, once you take up the cross and follow Jesus, that's actually where life is found. 00:09:25.679 --> 00:09:30.879 Not in being truer to yourself, but actually denying yourself, in a sense. 00:09:31.120 --> 00:09:37.840 So if that's the promise, that that's where abundant life is found, then that's exactly Paul's point. 00:09:38.159 --> 00:09:38.960 Guard it. 00:09:39.200 --> 00:09:48.720 Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 1.18, for the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God. 00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:59.279 We must believe that though the world sees us as simple-minded, misinformed, old-fashioned, that the God of the Bible is alive and he's working in ways that we wouldn't even begin to fathom across the world. 00:09:59.440 --> 00:10:05.279 There are gospel movements and multiplications going on in the Middle East and in Africa that we wouldn't even believe if we read about them. 00:10:05.519 --> 00:10:10.480 Now it's important to get a little bit further understanding of the context before we dive in. 00:10:10.799 --> 00:10:17.840 Timothy, or Paul is writing to one person in 2 Timothy, Timothy, but he's thinking about a broader landscape behind it. 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:20.639 He's thinking about the Big C church. 00:10:21.200 --> 00:10:32.000 The Big C church does not continue on just through the efforts of a couple five-star recruits like Augustine, Billy Graham, Spurgeon, though those are helpful. 00:10:32.320 --> 00:10:36.399 The church actually survives through the efforts of all the people in between. 00:10:36.720 --> 00:10:43.840 We have the church today in Georgia because of the efforts of thousands and thousands of men and women who you don't know their names. 00:10:44.639 --> 00:10:56.320 And while those big guys are awesome and faithful, the plea from Paul is that corporate faithfulness, a bunch, a bunch of people just like us who are just a bunch of average people, right? 00:10:56.399 --> 00:10:57.519 That's a great news. 00:10:57.759 --> 00:11:00.559 That's what keeps the church alive. 00:11:00.799 --> 00:11:04.639 So, how do we continue on, even though our culture is deteriorating? 00:11:04.799 --> 00:11:06.720 We guard the gospel together. 00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:09.440 We guard the gospel together. 00:11:09.759 --> 00:11:12.080 So, with these things in mind, let's dive in. 00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:16.320 So, 2 Timothy chapter 1, I'm gonna read 3 through 7 again for us. 00:11:16.639 --> 00:11:24.879 I thank God whom I serve as did my ancestors with a clear conscience, as I remember you, Timothy, constantly in my prayers night and day. 00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:29.840 As I remember your tears, I long to see you that I may be filled with joy. 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:38.559 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice as well, and now I'm sure dwells in you. 00:11:38.799 --> 00:11:45.039 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through a laying on And so here's a couple of just bullet points of what Timothy had been through with Paul. 00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:26.080 One, Timothy was there when the Thessalonian church needed encouragement, 1 Thessalonians 3. 00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:31.200 Timothy was there when the Corinthian church needed to be reminded of the gospel in 1 Corinthians 4. 00:12:31.440 --> 00:12:34.960 Timothy was there before Paul's first imprisonment. 00:12:35.120 --> 00:12:41.279 We see that in Acts 16, before the conversion of Lydia and then the jailer when the earthquake happens, right? 00:12:41.519 --> 00:12:43.679 Timothy was there with Paul. 00:12:44.080 --> 00:12:56.559 So the question we need to ask first for ourselves is if in light of this deep spiritual friendship that Paul and Timothy have, is there anyone in our life that we share an intimate bond of this depth with? 00:12:56.879 --> 00:12:59.919 Not just relationally, but spiritually. 00:13:00.159 --> 00:13:19.120 Is there someone in our life that we can confess things to, that we can share our darkest challenges and doubts and wrestlings with the Lord to come to them and say, hey, I'm really doubting God's goodness, I'm doubting God's faithfulness, I'm even doubting if God's there, and for that person not to welcome you with judgment or critique, but with love and welcome and empathy? 00:13:19.279 --> 00:13:21.759 Like, is there someone in our life that we have? 00:13:22.320 --> 00:13:25.919 Because man, like, how much time and energy do we spend trying to hide? 00:13:26.240 --> 00:13:33.039 Like, how much time do we try to push our shame down, push our guilt down, push our lack of spiritual knowledge down? 00:13:33.440 --> 00:13:36.879 And man, like, how much life would there be if we had somebody like that? from a family of faith, right? 00:13:47.200 --> 00:13:48.320 Verse 5. 00:13:48.559 --> 00:13:54.240 Timothy, pretty cool, was one of the first, like, second generation Christians that we know of. 00:13:54.559 --> 00:14:06.480 His dad was Greek and his mom was likely Jewish from birth, but then heard the gospel message, got saved, and then raised up Timothy in the ways of Jesus, not just the Old Testament, but also now in the risen Christ. 00:14:06.879 --> 00:14:10.960 But here's a very important point about Timothy and for us today. 00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:19.679 While it is a beautiful thing for a child to be raised in the knowledge of Jesus, and we would encourage that, Christianity is not hereditary. 00:14:20.320 --> 00:14:26.720 Parents, you can be the best, most faithful parent 00:16:12.879 --> 00:16:26.879 It seems then that Paul's appeal is to continue fanning it, to stir up that inner fire, to keep it alive, even ablaze, presumably by exercising the gift faithfully and by
