he said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, excuse me, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that created us, God created all of mankind, he created this world, it is his idea, and I want to put before you the notion that it is a very generous idea for him to create us. 00:03:11.680 --> your life, all of your possessions, all of your money, your health, your body, your family, your identity, your passions, your vocational calling, all of it is a gift of God given by God for you to if I were to think that it's all up to me to become everything that I want to be and everything that I should be, that's an anxiety-producing thought. 00:05:15.519 --> 00:05:21.040 It's pretty depressing because I'm not really all that great. 00:05:22.720 --> 00:05:39.199 Honestly, it's probably one of the reasons that so many people struggle with anxiety and with depression, with this sense of being overwhelmed, because we are struck with the reality that all is not well, all is not as it should be. 00:05:40.560 --> 00:05:49.680 Other ways that we're told, or at least my generation was told, that we should view the world is that you're only as good as what you produce. 00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:54.000 You're not really even a human being, you're a human doing. 00:05:54.240 --> 00:05:59.279 And it's all up to you to go out and do what you should, to get what you can. 00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:04.399 And some of us are familiar with kind of a Christianized version of that. our head, and we buy into them and we believe them and we feel them and we think them, when in reality, what does God say? 00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:31.839 He says, I'm gonna bless you, be fruitful, multiply, have dominion. 00:06:33.279 --> 00:06:36.079 I have given you everything. 00:06:37.439 --> 00:06:50.399 At the foundation, at the core of our historic Christianity is the very commitment 00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:52.000 The second encouragement that I have for you is a bit of a challenge, and it's in a in a section of scripture that um that you don't read a lot. 00:07:52.160 --> 00:08:00.480 It's in Deuteronomy chapter 15, and I would encourage you to read the whole chapter, but let me make sure you understand the context. 00:08:00.800 --> 00:08:15.360 When God rescued his people out of Egypt, he uh he had to change their mentality, he had to teach them who they really were, because they had been enslaved for 400 years. 00:08:15.600 --> 00:08:33.039 And so he started, started with Genesis, told them how they were created, and then later on in the story, after they've been in the desert for 40 years, he is preparing to send them in to the promised land where they wouldn't eat just manna and wear the same clothes all the time, but where they would actually be able to flourish. 00:08:33.279 --> 00:08:39.919 So in Deuteronomy 15, he tells them, Every seven years you let everybody out of their debts. 00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:42.480 Well, that's a crazy thought. 00:08:42.720 --> 00:08:45.440 But it says here in verse 10, 11, let's read it. 00:08:45.519 --> 00:08:51.440 This is what theologians call the poverty mandate, which is a terrible term for it, but I'll get to that in a second. 00:08:51.679 --> 00:09:06.000 It says, You shall give to him, this is your brother, you shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. 00:09:06.240 --> 00:09:09.120 For there will never cease to be poor in the land. 00:09:09.440 --> 00:09:18.159 Therefore I command you, you shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy, and to the poor in your land. 00:09:19.279 --> 00:09:27.360 I would argue that this is not a poverty mandate, but it's a local, generous living mandate. 00:09:28.320 --> 00:09:39.120 It is a command of God that we would give freely, that we would give without being grudging, that we would open our hand to our brother, to the needy, and to the poor. 00:09:39.360 --> 00:09:50.159 Now, why is it essential that God would have a command like this, one that, if I'm honest, makes me very uncomfortable because I do not live up to it. 00:09:50.559 --> 00:09:53.679 But why is it essential that it's in the scripture? 00:09:53.919 --> 00:10:04.639 Well, God gave his law, as most of you probably know, to show us where we do not live according to the way that Jesus calls us to live. 00:10:05.200 --> 00:10:14.799 Sin is a problem, and God is so generous, this is the second point, that he commands us to generously overcome our unjust stinginess. 00:10:15.759 --> 00:10:18.000 Stinginess comes from the fall. 00:10:18.879 --> 00:10:23.279 It is one of an individual sin, but it's also a corporate sin. 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:34.080 It is out of the inherent consequences of our sinfulness, both as individuals and as communities. 00:10:34.320 --> 00:10:46.159 And we as God's people, in this mandate, are given a responsibility to overcome systemic injustice in a broken world, one that is unjust. 00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:55.519 And we do that by being generous locally with people who live near us, those who are materially poor, our brothers, people in your land. 00:10:56.080 --> 00:11:01.519 And we are to give freely, we're to not do it grudgingly, and we're to do it open-handedly. 00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:09.279 God gives us this command, and as I've already mentioned, um I don't live up to you've got it and you think you have to keep it and you have to fight it, and you've developed a sense of it's mine, and I'm proud of it, and it's your identity. 00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:31.519 This doesn't discount the wisdom of Scripture, but it's a posture of our heart that we have to recognize in order for us to really fully understand and experience the lavish generosity of God Himself. 00:14:00.159 --> 00:14:11.039 There was a moment in that story where there are, again, millions of former slaves, they've been, they've been redeemed, they're in the desert, and serpents begin to attack them. 00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:15.919 And they have no hospital, they have no urgent care, they have no vaccine, they have nothing. 00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:19.360 People are dying because they're being attacked. 00:14:19.440 --> 00:14:21.519 And what does God tell Moses to do? 00:14:21.679 --> 00:14:28.879 He says, make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole, and everyone who looks to the bronze serpent will be saved. 00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:42.799 And Jesus, we see recorded in John chapter 3, was having a conversation with a very wealthy individual who was living his life according to a very stingy rule, a Pharisaic rule. 00:14:43.759 --> 00:14:54.960 And Jesus said to this rich and educated man, As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 00:14:55.120 --> 00:14:59.120 For God so loved the world that he Say it. 00:15:00.559 --> 00:15:01.200 He gave. 00:15:50.559 --> 00:15:55.600 And it reminds us of our need for someone who was responsible for poor people. 00:15:56.960 --> 00:16:04.879 We need to be reminded that there was someone who took the opportunity to be generous for others'
