faith. 00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:26.800 But as you would guess, that's not what we'll do here this morning because when we see it in the context that it comes after chapter one, we know it's not guilt-driven faith, it's something else. 00:02:26.960 --> 00:02:36.479 It's actually an encouragement in the language of an urgent, urgent, urgent encouragement because it's attached to the promise of chapter one. 00:02:36.879 --> 00:02:48.400 So, what chapter one taught us last week, if you remember, it taught us that Jesus is God, Jesus is the Christ from the beginning by which the world was created, the world is upheld, by which we are redeemed. 00:02:48.479 --> 00:02:50.879 We have all the forgiveness we ever need. 00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:53.360 We don't have to add a single thing. the summer, I took my first guided fly fishing trip down a river in a boat where you're straight, you're kind of your legs are strapped at the front of the boat, or you're the back of the boat. this passage, is the possibility of drifting past the safety of what we actually already have in Jesus. 00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:25.519 And drift is what happens just in life and in relationships. 00:05:45.199 All right, now we're ready for Hebrews chapter 2. 00:05:45.519 --> 00:06:00.079 Therefore, all right, because of all of chapter one, the greatness and the supremacy, how final the forgiveness of Jesus is, therefore, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 00:06:00.319 --> 00:06:08.240 So, point number one is this because Jesus is so good, keep your heart set on Jesus. 00:06:08.560 --> 00:06:10.560 So I could say that much more theological. 00:06:10.800 --> 00:06:25.680 If we want to get intellectual, I could say it this way: Christ's supremacy calls us to keep a contemplative awareness to the message of justification by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. 00:06:25.839 --> 00:06:28.319 Don't ever leave that message. 00:06:29.439 --> 00:06:33.199 A few weeks ago, our city school system had an online meeting. 00:06:33.279 --> 00:06:43.040 Maybe you listened to it online, the board met online, and Christy and I we were in our kitchen and we put the meeting on our laptop and she was preparing dinner, and I was sort of acting like I was helping. 00:06:43.199 --> 00:06:45.439 Maybe I was just kind of sitting there listening to the meeting. 00:06:45.519 --> 00:06:47.120 So she's listening to the meeting, I'm listening to the meeting. 00:06:47.199 --> 00:06:50.800 We're not really talking because we're so tuned in to the meeting. 00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:55.920 We don't have the radio on, we don't have our phones, we're not checking our phones, we don't have the TV on. 00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:01.519 We are tuned in to this meeting because this affected our lives. 00:07:01.839 --> 00:07:06.240 We wanted to know and hear everything, right? 00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:12.879 We we made arrangements in our lives to listen to that which mattered. 00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:25.759 I mean, it's the same reason when you go to tuck in uh my kids at night, uh, all our girls share a room, so you head into that room, and usually the two little ones are getting in bed, and maybe the older one is out still hanging out in the house. 00:07:25.839 --> 00:07:33.360 And so you get into one bed and you're tucking one kid in, and maybe you remember this, or you've done this, or you're doing this in your life now, and you're tucking one kid in. 00:07:33.519 --> 00:07:59.519 Well, you're tucking one kid in, the other kid's yelling for you, while you're tugging that kid in, and you have to say, hey, just a minute, I'm with your sister, just a minute, I'm with your brother, and then you go to be with the other kid, and then the other kid, and then you say, Hey, just a minute, I'm you know, I'm with your brother, I'm with your sister, just or you know what, hey, I'm I'm with your dad, I'm with your mom, you know, just a minute, because what you're trying to do is you're trying to make arrangements to listen to that person that's right in front of you. 00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:03.360 Because we make arrangements to listen to what matters. 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:07.199 And this is what the contemplative life is of Christian faith. 00:08:07.279 --> 00:08:12.480 It's making arrangements, creating patterns and postures and practices. 00:08:12.959 --> 00:08:15.120 That's why we say, you know, read your Bible and pray. 00:08:15.360 --> 00:08:20.800 So those are practices of grace for us, have devotions, worship, come to church, learn. 00:08:21.360 --> 00:08:33.600 These are all practices and postures of grace for us to be setting our hearts on that which matters, for us to remember chapter one, how good Jesus is for us. 00:08:34.240 --> 00:08:40.960 So God's calling us to this remembrance and this contemplative life to heed this and remember this message. 00:08:41.759 --> 00:08:44.080 We get chapter two because we have chapter one. 00:08:44.320 --> 00:08:52.240 And Hebrews is an encouragement for people and for us to hold fast to the message that actually helps. 00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:55.360 And the writer is emphatic and he is urgent. 00:08:55.600 --> 00:09:04.799 Literally, verse one says, a literal translation would say this it is exceedingly necessary that we give heed to what we have heard. 00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:07.600 I mean, there's an urgency to it in the language. 00:09:07.840 --> 00:09:09.039 Jumping to verse two. 00:09:09.600 --> 00:09:22.480 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? 00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:35.840 It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:39.200 So the writer says, this message was proven out. 00:09:40.399 --> 00:09:43.919 But he says there was a message that came before this, and it was given by angels. 00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:48.559 And that's that's the key phrase here for us to unlock what this could possibly mean. 00:09:48.799 --> 00:09:51.759 Point number two is this people are sinners. 00:09:52.080 --> 00:09:56.240 We are people and sinners, and sinners easily drift. 00:09:56.320 --> 00:09:57.200 We need all of that, Like I haven't said it, take me about another week to say it, but she says it much earlier, and she's always right, and that's when we know, okay, we gotta sit on the porch by ourselves without our children, or we need to go out for tacos without our children. 00:11:09.840 --> 00:11:10.240 Right? 00:11:10.399 --> 00:11:14.799 I mean, the whole time, I mean, we're still upheld by our marriage didn't all of a sudden threaten the marriage covenant and the commitment, that loyal love, right? 00:11:25.679 --> 00:11:32.639 Like it didn't threaten that, but yet there's still like a disconnect within the safety of the relationship. 00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:36.159 This is the beauty of the of the covenant we have with God. 00:11:36.559 --> 00:11:45.600 That we can be in a covenant relationship with God that is secure, and at the same time, we can still be living in some disconnect of the experience of the relationship. 00:11:46.399 --> 00:11:49.440 And it's just for us to set our hearts don't have to fear any of that. 00:11:58.159 --> 00:12:04.559 But understand that we've got to understand verses two and three because verses two and three read very strange to a lot of us. 00:12:17.919 Well, the writer is referring back to the message declared by the angels that would have been spoken to Old Testament prophets and to Moses. 00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:22.240 And so, what the writer is talking about, he's talking about the law. 00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:30.320 And the law said, and the law still says, obey, and if you obey, obey, and then you will be accepted by God. 00:12:31.120 --> 00:12:35.279 And that same law held serious repercussions for these people. 00:12:35.440 --> 00:12:36.320 They would have known it. 00:12:36.879 --> 00:12:50.480 When they read this letter, they read this verse, they would have known exactly what the writer's talking about because they lived in a society governed by law that had serious repercussions and punishments, not just understanding from God, but societally. 00:12:50.960 --> 00:12:54.639 And so when they read this, they would have said, Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about. 00:12:54.960 --> 00:12:56.799 I was stuck in that sort of religion. 00:12:56.960 --> 00:13:00.960 I was stuck in that sort of life where law had punishment. 00:13:03.519 --> 00:13:05.279 But we're not under law. 00:13:05.600 --> 00:13:07.759 Law was not the end of the story. 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:18.720 Not for Christians, because for Christians, we believe Jesus Christ was the fulfillment of the law, and we do not live under law, we live under grace. 00:13:18.960 --> 00:13:21.759 Jesus fulfilled the law, so we live in the gospel. 00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:26.799 The law guides us, but the law leads us to our need of remember what a performance-based life does? 00:13:36.879 --> 00:13:38.240 It crushes you. 00:13:38.639 --> 00:13:45.840 If you always have to obey, or you always have to perform to be accepted, you week. 00:14:02.080 --> 00:14:20.480 Uh the N-E-T translation says it this way: for if the message spoken through the angels proved to be so firm that every violation or disobedience received its just penalty, how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? 00:14:20.639 --> 00:14:24.320 Now, all of a sudden, that translation makes you kind of think back to this idea of law. 00:14:24.399 --> 00:14:26.960 Like it's talking about law and the punishment of law. 00:14:27.279 --> 00:14:38.000 Verse 3 comes to life a little bit in the NEB translation, but it says this what escape can there --> 00:14:55.919 Last point is this. 00:14:56.159 --> 00:15:04.240 We are saved from a performance-based life and saved into a contemplative, grace-centered life. 00:15:04.399 --> 00:15:07.679 That's what Jesus gives us. 00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:20.720 And it is in an urgent tone this morning in these verses, motivating us to see and remember and set our mind's attention and our heart's affection on for you to consider, perhaps this morning just now, or perhaps you write them down and you could consider them in your time this week with the Lord. 00:15:33.519 --> 00:15:40.879 Number one is this what spiritual practices might be helpful for you to grow deeper in Christ's work and love for you? 00:15:41.360 --> 00:15:45.519 What spiritual practices might be helpful to you? 00:15:45.679 --> 00:15:59.840 Not that you need those spiritual practices in order to be accepted by God, but because you're so accepted by God, what spiritual practices could just bring more joy to your heart to remember who you are and the love that He has for you? 00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:04.720 Number two is this how have you seen Jesus' righteousness for you? 00:16:04.879 --> 00:16:11.200 How have you seen Jesus' righteousness deliver you from the toil of performancism? 00:16:11.519 --> 00:16:24.399 And just to remember that, the ways in your life that Jesus is righteous, that you have been declared fully righteous by his work for you because he fulfilled the law, fully worthy, free from a performance-based life. 00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:28.399 In what ways have you started to see freedom in your heart? 00:16:28.879 --> 00:16:34.240 And then lastly, what areas of your heart need deeper healing from performancism? 00:16:34.720 --> 00:16:42.159 What areas are you still vulnerable to performance-based life that we might find refuge in the loving welcome of Christ? 00:16:42.720 --> 00:16:48.720 And those questions are just for us to know more grace of this grace that's already given to us. 00:16:49.039 --> 00:17:01.679 So, my brothers and sisters, may the Holy Spirit give you greater awareness of how supreme and good Jesus is for you to turn your mind's attention and your
