socially, uh, economically uh horrible, horrible things. 00:01:11.599 --> 00:01:19.439 A genocide had occurred, their communities had broken down, starvation, murders, and then dangerous boat rides basically to the United States. 00:01:19.519 --> 00:01:54.560 And the psychologist said, and here's what's interesting, the psychologist said, once you got in front of these people and then you talked to them, then you talk to them about their trauma and about the horrors they went through, and you talked about all that, at some point stuff like this would pop up where the person would say, So I met this guy when I was living in the refugee camp, and we fell in love, and I thought he really loved me, but then we were separated on different boats, and he took up with my cousin, now he's married to her, but he says he really loves me, and he keeps calling me, and I know I should tell him to go away, but I still love him and I can't stop thinking about him, and I don't know what to do. amazing. 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:07.519 Look at this early church. 00:08:07.600 --> 00:08:08.959 Let's read that early church. 00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:15.680 It's like a utopia, which apparently lasted for about 30 seconds because we're in Acts chapter 6 and we have a problem. 00:08:17.279 --> 00:08:21.120 Arguments begin and divisions begin, and they never stop, never will stop. 00:08:21.279 --> 00:08:22.720 Problems will always exist. 00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:34.480 What's wonderful about what plays out here in this Acts chapter 6 is the problem exists and it's a nasty, horrible problem, and it is raised to the leadership, and they immediately deal with it. 00:08:34.559 --> 00:08:36.080 And that's fantastic. 00:08:36.399 --> 00:08:40.879 So this Acts chapter 6, verses 1 through 4, I'll Hellenists, that's one group, one culture, one race, arose against the Hebrews, another culture and race, because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. 00:08:56.879 --> 00:09:04.320 And the twelve summoned the full number of disciples and said, It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. 00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:11.360 Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of spirit and of wisdom, whom we'll appoint to this duty. 00:09:11.679 --> 00:09:16.399 So, hey, we're gonna we're gonna appoint some living, a new way of thinking, where all are created in the image of God, all are broken in sin just the same, and all are brought to salvation and oneness in Christ. 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:13.919 This God is not the God of one race and tribe, which is how all other nations thought of their gods. 00:10:14.559 --> 00:10:22.639 This God broke free of that limiting view and said, He is the God of have two sons, and in Bethlehem, a drought begins, the food dries up, there's nothing to eat, this family, they don't know where to go, they have to go where there's food. 00:10:58.879 --> 00:11:00.000 Well, there's food in Moab. 00:11:00.080 --> 00:11:04.559 Well, this is a problem because the Moabites don't like the Hebrews. 00:11:04.720 --> 00:11:07.840 And this family is Hebrew, but they gotta move to Moab for food. 00:11:07.919 --> 00:11:10.480 So they move to Moab, which is a risk. 00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:12.480 They don't like each other. 00:11:13.440 --> 00:11:16.960 And they get there, and Elamelech, the dad, he dies. 00:11:17.440 --> 00:11:20.240 So now you're down to mom and two boys. 00:11:20.879 --> 00:11:25.840 The two boys end up marrying two Moabite girls, Orpah and Ruth. 00:11:25.919 --> 00:11:28.399 So one race marries another race. 00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:34.639 They live there for 10 years, never a grandchild, no grandbabies, no heirs, and then the sons return, and so Naomi says, it's time for me to go home, it's time for me to move back. 00:11:48.559 --> 00:11:52.879 And she looks at her daughters-in-laws and says, Hey, girls, y'all stay here. marrying again are incredibly slim. 00:12:19.679 --> 00:12:25.200 But then a man enters her life, this man named Boaz, which means Redeemer. 00:12:25.440 --> 00:12:29.759 And this Redeemer marries this girl from another country, from another race. 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:33.440 And Ruth and Boaz go on to have a son named Obed. 00:12:33.679 --> 00:12:35.440 Obed has a son named Jesse. 00:12:35.679 --> 00:12:42.159 Jesse has a son named David, who is King David, who is the lineage of the Jewish Messiah, Jesus. 00:12:42.320 --> 00:12:43.440 What's the point? 00:12:43.840 --> 00:12:48.159 Well, the point is a Moabite is in the line of the Jewish Messiah. 00:12:48.559 --> 00:12:57.440 The entire time God is trying to get us to see he is not the God of one group of people or one race or one culture. 00:12:58.159 --> 00:13:06.960 God is breaking down the walls of an ethnocentric view of God, and he's breaking down racist views of each other that we hold. 00:13:07.519 --> dismantles racism, our racism, because identity is received from God. 00:13:25.039 --> 00:13:35.600 The gospel says you are beloved before what you look like, where you are from, or what you do, absolved and accepted, redeemed into an identity that's given to you, not earned by the work of Jesus, not your word. 00:14:35.840 --> 00:14:43.039 And this is where you become secure enough that you already deemed secure and important, and even absolved of the ways in which we have used racism to feel important and secure. 00:15:29.279 --> 00:15:46.080 It's the truth of this gospel that takes away the sorrow of our mistakes, our society's mistakes, our parents' mistakes, our grandparents' mistakes, our community's mistakes, and begins to create a new way to relate to each other out of our belovedness and out of God's love of all people. 00:15:46.480 --> 00:15:53.039 This is what enables the people in Acts 6, when the problem arises and surfaces, they so quickly deal with it.
