WEBVTT

00:00:00.959 --> 00:00:02.479
My name is Brian Robinson.

00:00:02.560 --> 00:00:04.719
I'm one of the elders here at Christ the Redeemer.

00:00:04.879 --> 00:00:07.519
And first of all, I'm just grateful you're here.

00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:10.240
Thankful for Jessica and Kevin coming.

00:00:10.400 --> 00:00:15.279
I'm just reminded often in this little church that we've been here for two years.

00:00:15.519 --> 00:00:21.199
Just so thankful how good God has been to us through bringing us people like Sam, like Jessica.

00:00:21.440 --> 00:00:24.879
Just so easy and wonderful to worship with them.

00:00:25.440 --> 00:00:36.079
So if you were here a few months ago, Brad Respus, one of the other elders, mentioned that the reason why we have elders teaching is we believe the Bible says that elders, one of the rules is for elders to teach.

00:00:36.159 --> 00:00:38.320
So that's why I'm up here, and that's the only reason.

00:00:38.479 --> 00:00:44.640
There's a lot of other fruit that comes with elders teaching, such as some rest for us, which I think is great.

00:00:45.200 --> 00:00:48.799
But the main reason I'm here is because Scripture says for elders to teach.

00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:51.439
So if you'll bow your heads, I'll pray and then we'll start.

00:00:51.920 --> 00:00:55.119
Heavenly Father, I'm just grateful for this time.

00:00:55.200 --> 00:00:58.320
Um grateful for what you're doing in Marietta.

00:00:58.479 --> 00:01:00.640
Um I pray for First Pres.

00:01:01.439 --> 00:01:11.680
Um that church is going through a hard time, and I pray that you would be with them and that your name would be glorified in all the events that are happening there.

00:01:11.920 --> 00:01:13.200
I pray for us this morning.

00:01:13.359 --> 00:01:19.040
I pray that your name would be glorified and uh that you would give us grace this morning and that you would show us Jesus.

00:01:19.200 --> 00:01:20.480
In his name I pray.

00:01:20.719 --> 00:01:21.359
Amen.

00:01:22.159 --> 00:01:24.480
Um so first I want to give a little background.

00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:37.920
I'm gonna be talking about Exodus 5 today, and uh a little background that Russ has been preaching through Exodus, um, and I'm gonna talk a little bit about um God's promise with Abraham, um with Moses after Abraham too.

00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:43.519
So God had established a covenant with Israel 700 years prior with Abraham.

00:01:43.599 --> 00:01:46.799
He said, I will be your God and you will be my people.

00:01:47.040 --> 00:01:53.920
And he told Abraham that for a time you're even gonna be slaves in a nation, and eventually I'll deliver you.

00:01:54.159 --> 00:02:00.159
And so that's kind of where we pick up in this story is the Israelites are a slave nation under Pharaoh.

00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:05.760
Pharaoh is the leader of Egypt, and the Israelites live in Egypt, and they are slaves.

00:02:05.920 --> 00:02:10.319
And Moses is the leader of the Israelites, Moses and Aaron.

00:02:10.479 --> 00:02:15.599
And so God tells Moses, You I want you to go to Pharaoh and tell him to let you people go.

00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:18.800
And Pharaoh says, No, I'm not doing that.

00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:21.759
I'm dependent upon you for our economy.

00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:31.840
Um And then he says, Actually, I think you guys are lazy, and now I want you guys to make they were making bricks, that was one of their requirements as slaves.

00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:38.240
And he said, Now I want you to make bricks, but we're no longer providing you with the straw to make the bricks with.

00:02:38.800 --> 00:02:41.759
And you have to make the same number of bricks.

00:02:42.080 --> 00:02:52.800
So you can imagine the people of Israel were not really happy with Moses because he had made their lives much more difficult by negotiating with Pharaoh.

00:02:53.039 --> 00:02:55.520
And that's kind of where we pick up in these verses.

00:02:55.680 --> 00:02:58.560
Um the Israelites were very frustrated with Moses.

00:02:58.879 --> 00:03:05.039
And the foreman of the Israelite workers said this, and this is Exodus 5, 21 through 23.

00:03:05.199 --> 00:03:06.000
I'm going to read it.

00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:17.599
And they said to them, The Lord look on you and judge, because you have made us stink in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.

00:03:17.840 --> 00:03:24.080
Then Moses turned to the Lord and said, O Lord, why have you done this evil to this people?

00:03:24.319 --> 00:03:26.000
Why did you ever send me?

00:03:26.240 --> 00:03:34.240
For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all.

00:03:34.479 --> 00:03:36.159
And that's the word of the Lord.

00:03:37.599 --> 00:03:42.240
So my talk today, Moses is very much having a why me moment.

00:03:42.319 --> 00:03:47.599
And I think all of us have these moments in life where we're like, God, why did you do this to me?

00:03:47.840 --> 00:03:49.840
And it's basically anger at God.

00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:54.319
Um so if I had to title this talk, it would be Remembering Who We Are.

00:03:54.719 --> 00:04:03.199
Um and I was thinking about in my life things that I have a hard time remembering, and one of them is my age.

00:04:03.360 --> 00:04:05.360
I have a hard time remembering my age.

00:04:05.599 --> 00:04:09.039
I always see myself as much younger than I actually am.

00:04:09.120 --> 00:04:11.360
And this reveals a great deal of pride to me.

00:04:11.520 --> 00:04:16.720
So some of this is a little embarrassing, but please laugh at me because it is funny to me.

00:04:16.879 --> 00:04:28.319
So the first experience I had with this is when you young people don't know this, but when you graduate from college, like for the next 10 years, you will always feel like you just graduated from college.

00:04:28.560 --> 00:04:37.120
And this hit me very hard when I went to Georgia Tech and I was in a fraternity there, and we had a chef that I was good friends with, a cook.

00:04:37.279 --> 00:04:38.560
His name is Gene.

00:04:38.800 --> 00:04:43.199
And uh someone called me up from the fraternity and said, We're having a big dinner to honor Gene.

00:04:43.279 --> 00:04:44.560
We want some of the old guys.

00:04:44.639 --> 00:04:47.600
I was like, who's the we want some of the old guys to come?

00:04:47.759 --> 00:04:58.000
And uh so myself and ten other guys went, and we walked into the fraternity house, and I walked in and I was like, they must be having like some sort of high school event here.

00:04:58.079 --> 00:04:58.720
What's going on?

00:04:58.959 --> 00:05:04.240
All the high school guys, and my buddy tapped me on the shoulder and said, These are the guys in college, Brian.

00:05:04.319 --> 00:05:09.279
And I came to a very stern realization that I no longer was this age.

00:05:09.519 --> 00:05:19.199
Um, so I I came to grips with that, and then recently my wife and I went to a shower, a wedding shower, which I'm not totally in favor of.

00:05:19.439 --> 00:05:22.560
Baby shower, but but a wedding shower in which the males were invited to.

00:05:22.800 --> 00:05:28.480
So Mandy and I went, there's a bunch of young people there, like 20s, I'm considering young.

00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:31.839
Um so we're talking to these young couples.

00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:37.519
They're some of them are engaged, some of them are married, they have young kids, and I'm like, this is fun.

00:05:37.600 --> 00:05:40.879
We're kind of hanging out, fitting in, feeling good.

00:05:41.120 --> 00:05:45.600
And then uh I think someone asked Mandy, so how long have you and Brian been married?

00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:48.800
And kind of the room, I felt like the room got really quiet.

00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:51.279
And Mandy said, 17 years.

00:05:51.439 --> 00:05:53.680
And then the record player kind of scratched.

00:05:53.759 --> 00:05:55.680
And how many kids do you have?

00:05:55.839 --> 00:06:01.680
We have four, our oldest is 13, like whoa, you know, everyone's kind of blown away, and they kind of moved away from us.

00:06:01.839 --> 00:06:02.879
I felt like after that.

00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:13.680
Um but then most recently, uh, I'm a dentist and I've been practicing about 13 years, and uh people used to come up to me when I would walk in the room, they're expecting like a 55-year-old man.

00:06:13.839 --> 00:06:20.639
So I would come in and they would look at me, and some of them would hide their emotions pretty well, like, oh my gosh.

00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:24.319
And then some of them would just say, like, are you the brief person?

00:06:24.480 --> 00:06:29.360
Are you really do I trust you, someone that looks like you, to work on my teeth?

00:06:29.600 --> 00:06:42.240
And I remember complaining about that to an older dentist, kind of my mentor, who was about 55 at the time, and uh he said, One day you're gonna wish that they did that, because they used to do that to me.

00:06:42.399 --> 00:06:44.560
And I was like, They used to do that to you?

00:06:44.800 --> 00:06:46.480
Like, you, no way.

00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:58.160
And so, fast forward to about a week ago, I was work I was checking this little girl, she's about seven years old, and I was looking in her mouth, and she said, What are those funny glasses that you're wearing?

00:06:58.319 --> 00:07:02.720
And I said, Well, these have magnification, so I can see your teeth really closely.

00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:05.439
And she said, I said, Would you like to look at them?

00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:06.319
And she said, sure.

00:07:06.560 --> 00:07:12.160
So she put them on, and I I was showing her her hand, and she was like, Whoa, you know, wow, look at that.

00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:15.920
And uh she said, No, no, no, I want to look in your mouth, I want to look in your mouth.

00:07:16.079 --> 00:07:18.879
And I was like, good for you, no one has ever asked me that.

00:07:19.040 --> 00:07:20.160
Like, check me out.

00:07:20.319 --> 00:07:22.000
So I'm like, bring it on, what you got?

00:07:22.079 --> 00:07:27.680
And so I open I opened my mouth and she's looking and she goes, What are those cracks on your tongue?

00:07:27.920 --> 00:07:30.480
And I was like, I don't, I don't really know.

00:07:30.639 --> 00:07:33.600
What do you why do you think I have cracks on on my tongue?

00:07:33.839 --> 00:07:38.079
And she said, it must be because it's so old.

00:07:38.959 --> 00:07:41.759
And I was like, maybe it is.

00:07:42.079 --> 00:07:47.519
So now I'm a little self-conscious about my shriveled up old 40-year-old tongue.

00:07:47.759 --> 00:07:51.439
Um, but I'm coming to grips with the fact that I'm 40.

00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:54.079
Um, so back to Moses.

00:07:54.399 --> 00:07:58.959
Um, remembering who we are, and I have three points to this to this talk.

00:07:59.199 --> 00:08:04.160
The first point is discouragement is real and understandable.

00:08:04.399 --> 00:08:05.680
So back to the verses.

00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:08.160
Let's go back and look at verse 22.

00:08:08.399 --> 00:08:22.480
Moses, it says, Moses turned to the Lord and said, so it's clear that Moses is not just walking away from the Lord, he's turning to the Lord and looking, uh, looking to him for an answer.

00:08:22.639 --> 00:08:30.160
Um the commentary, one of the commentaries I read said Moses' condition would be described as dismayed and discouraged.

00:08:30.240 --> 00:08:32.480
As I said before, he's asking, why me, God?

00:08:32.559 --> 00:08:34.399
Why are you having me go through this?

00:08:34.960 --> 00:08:41.919
Dismay literally means concern or distress caused by something unexpected.

00:08:42.159 --> 00:08:47.200
And my wife, Mandy, likes to say, expectations kill relationships.

00:08:47.440 --> 00:08:55.519
So Moses was expecting something entirely different than seeing his friends and family go through these trials and be slaves.

00:08:55.759 --> 00:09:00.159
And he was admitting that to God, and he was going to God with his concern.

00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:03.360
Um I think that that honors God.

00:09:03.519 --> 00:09:07.039
One of the quotes that I read to prepare for this was a man named G.

00:09:07.200 --> 00:09:19.759
Campbell Morgan, and he said, Happy is the man who, when he cannot understand the divine movement, and indeed doubts it, has yet enough faith in God Himself to tell him all about it.

00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:25.200
So Moses was turning to God, the one he represented, and questioning God.

00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:38.720
He freely poured out his heart to God, and I think the reason why he was so shocked at what was happening is because these were his family, these were his people that were suffering in the midst of all this.

00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:41.039
And I think we shouldn't belittle that.

00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:47.360
I think it's easy to look back from our perspective and see the story of Moses and say, yeah, but but God promised you, remember that.

00:09:47.519 --> 00:09:55.120
Like, I think it's important for us to not have this us the mentality towards Moses, because I do this all the time, and I'm sure you do too.

00:09:55.279 --> 00:10:00.240
Um, but having said that, Moses' problem is he's forgetting what the Lord had told him.

00:10:00.399 --> 00:10:11.840
And that brings me to my second point, which is discouragement in the face of difficulty often comes from forgetting what God has already said in his word.

00:10:12.080 --> 00:10:13.679
I'll read that another time.

00:10:13.919 --> 00:10:23.039
So discouragement in the face of difficulty often comes from forgetting what God has already said in his word.

00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:32.000
And if we go back to what Russ taught a few weeks ago, Exodus chapter 3, I'm just going to read some verses that God has promised to Moses.

00:10:32.480 --> 00:10:36.559
In Exodus 3.12, God says, I will be with you.

00:10:36.960 --> 00:10:43.919
In Exodus 3.17, he says, I will bring you up out of the affliction of the land of Egypt.

00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:52.240
In Exodus 3.19, he says, The king of Egypt will not let you go unless compelled by a mighty hand.

00:10:52.720 --> 00:11:01.039
And then in Exodus 3.20, God says, I will strike Egypt with wonders, then he'll let you go, which really hasn't happened yet.

00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:08.320
And one of my favorites, Exodus 4.11, Moses is complaining about, I don't want to be the spokesperson.

00:11:08.639 --> 00:11:09.519
I'm not that guy.

00:11:09.679 --> 00:11:12.320
I stutter, I'm not good, my mouth doesn't work.

00:11:12.480 --> 00:11:14.480
And these words just jumped off the page to me.

00:11:14.639 --> 00:11:19.759
God says to Moses in Exodus 4.11, who has made man's mouth?

00:11:20.159 --> 00:11:26.320
Which I think is powerful when the creation, us, are telling God, wait, you don't understand, I'm not good.

00:11:26.480 --> 00:11:28.639
And God says, Who made you?

00:11:28.879 --> 00:11:34.000
Um and the point of all this, and I think it's really reassuring, is that God is sovereign.

00:11:34.320 --> 00:11:37.759
He knows all of these things are happening before they happen.

00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:43.360
And I think that brings us instead of a why me, why is this happening to me?

00:11:43.679 --> 00:11:48.240
It brings us to maybe the question of what is God teaching me in this trial.

00:11:48.480 --> 00:11:53.840
Um, Scotty Smith is a pastor in Nashville and one of my favorite speakers.

00:11:54.159 --> 00:12:09.440
He said this Dan Alander once said to me, Scotty, as long as your cry for relief is louder than your cry for a changed heart, you will remain a prisoner to your pain and a hostage to self-pity.

00:12:09.919 --> 00:12:27.600
And that hit me at a time in my life where I had a lot of trials going on in my life, and I felt like my cry was for relief, like, remove these trials from my life so I can go on about doing what I want to do, instead of what is God teaching me in this trial?

00:12:27.840 --> 00:12:42.879
Scotty also said, the very events that cause us the most pain in life can become the means by which we're equipped to love God and others with a depth we would have otherwise never known.

00:12:43.200 --> 00:12:53.919
However, an unwillingness or failure to take this healing path can keep us strangers to God's affections and isolated in the world of relationships.

00:12:54.240 --> 00:13:00.480
So remembering that God's purposes are being worked out in our lives, I think gives us courage when evil comes, and it will come.

00:13:00.639 --> 00:13:01.840
There will be trials.

00:13:02.080 --> 00:13:04.639
So where does that remembering lead us to?

00:13:04.799 --> 00:13:07.039
And that's point number three for me.

00:13:07.200 --> 00:13:11.840
Um we are secure in Christ, it brings us peace.

00:13:12.159 --> 00:13:21.759
Supremely the gospel itself, what God has done in Christ for our sake, has to be brought daily in front of us because we forget it.

00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:40.320
And Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15, 1 and 2, Paul says, Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preach to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preach to you, unless you believe in vain.

00:13:40.799 --> 00:13:43.440
So why do we preach this every week?

00:13:43.679 --> 00:13:46.159
I think it's because we forget it every week.

00:13:46.320 --> 00:13:55.519
I love it that Russ says every week we are more broken than we know, but we are far more loved than we can ever dare to dream.

00:13:55.679 --> 00:13:58.240
And I forget that every week, every hour.

00:13:58.399 --> 00:14:02.960
Um Martin Luther said, I preach the gospel every week because I forget it every week.

00:14:03.200 --> 00:14:29.279
Um and so I chose these verses about remembering because in 2011 um my wife and I and Brad and Megan respus were feeling we're learning some new things about um we were all Christians, but we were learning that we didn't have to earn God's love, that that Christ was our identity, that we no longer had to work for his approval or the approval of other people.

00:14:29.440 --> 00:14:31.360
It was finished, it had been done.

00:14:31.600 --> 00:14:41.759
But I realized I would go back to my own, to my old ways of self-salvation projects and um all of those things, and I needed to hear this every week.

00:14:41.919 --> 00:14:46.559
And I think that's why God had us help start this church.

00:14:46.639 --> 00:14:52.240
Um, at least Fitzpatrick, author of the book, because he loves me, calls this spiritual amnesia.

00:14:52.399 --> 00:14:54.159
And I think I still suffer from it.

00:14:54.320 --> 00:14:56.480
I think it's easy for us to forget.

00:14:56.639 --> 00:15:03.440
And that's why Tim Keller says the gospels are the A to Z of the Christian life, not the ABCs of the Christian life.

00:15:03.519 --> 00:15:05.679
Um we go back to the beginning.

00:15:05.919 --> 00:15:14.240
Um another memory I have of this church in the beginning was we had a new membership dinner or dessert at the respite's house.

00:15:14.320 --> 00:15:22.960
And we were going around the room and we were talking about how this church had impacted our lives, or how we had found this church, or how what Jesus had done here.

00:15:23.039 --> 00:15:24.559
And there were a lot of great stories.

00:15:24.639 --> 00:15:29.120
I remember Mark Hermes in particular talking about a funny story, of course, as he does.

00:15:29.279 --> 00:15:33.279
Uh, and but Charles Joseph is a guy who was with us in the beginning.

00:15:33.440 --> 00:15:37.279
He and his family are in Denver for a year on a on a project, but he'll be back.

00:15:37.360 --> 00:15:48.799
And he's someone I really respect, and I remember he stood up and Charles said, Do you realize what a rarity it is to hear Jesus preached week in and week out?

00:15:49.200 --> 00:15:54.639
And I think that's that was powerful for me to hear someone that I respected that much say that.

00:15:55.039 --> 00:16:02.720
So, how does this meet us, this remembering, and how does this meet us in our daily grind in Marietta, Georgia in 2015?

00:16:03.120 --> 00:16:09.600
Um I think I would like to ask, where is it that you'll face this challenge of not remembering this week?

00:16:09.759 --> 00:16:13.200
Do you have constant friction with a coworker, with a spouse?

00:16:13.440 --> 00:16:15.440
Is your best friend moving away?

00:16:15.519 --> 00:16:16.799
And that's hard for you?

00:16:17.120 --> 00:16:20.080
You found out a loved one is dying?

00:16:20.399 --> 00:16:25.440
Um, or just a relationship, your expectations of a relationship not being met.

00:16:25.759 --> 00:16:28.559
Um God hears and he cares.

00:16:28.720 --> 00:16:32.480
And I think he wants us to voice our emotions to him.

00:16:33.519 --> 00:16:50.799
When our focus is on, this is so hard for me because I'm an action guy, but I do believe when our focus is on remembering and not doing, doing will eventually become a fruit of remembering who we are in Christ.

00:16:51.120 --> 00:16:59.919
Moses had to remember God's covenant and his promise, and we have to remember that God sent his son for us, and we are his beloved.

00:17:00.320 --> 00:17:06.960
I had a friend send me a text this week because he knew I was going to be talking, and this is not my most natural environment.

00:17:07.119 --> 00:17:11.440
Um, but he sent me a text and he said, You are his beloved.

00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:14.960
And that, I mean, just rest in that.

00:17:15.119 --> 00:17:17.920
When we hear that, I'm astonished by that.

00:17:18.079 --> 00:17:30.799
Um and I think the good news or the gospel is when we are in Christ, he loves you sitting in this chair, this version of you that no one else knows, not a future version of you.

00:17:31.200 --> 00:17:37.279
Um I'm gonna conclude by reading Paul's powerful promise to us in Romans 8.

00:17:37.680 --> 00:17:50.880
Paul says, uh, who shall separate us from the love of Christ shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

00:17:51.440 --> 00:18:10.960
For I am sure that neither life nor death, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

00:18:11.279 --> 00:18:12.480
Let's pray.

00:18:13.359 --> 00:18:16.480
Lord, I'm so thankful for these words.

00:18:16.640 --> 00:18:22.799
I I pray this week that you would remind us that we are your beloved.

00:18:23.200 --> 00:18:33.599
And when we are quick to want to do and act in our own efforts and our own strengths, I pray that you would gently remind us I've already done it for you.

00:18:33.839 --> 00:18:35.839
Um live in me, relax.

00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:38.559
You are my adopted son and my adopted daughter.

00:18:38.720 --> 00:18:40.960
And I just pray that we would remember that this week.

00:18:41.200 --> 00:18:45.680
Thank you for what you're doing here, and um just grateful for your son.

00:18:45.759 --> 00:18:46.799
In Christ's name I pray.

00:18:46.960 --> 00:18:47.599
Amen.
