00:04:25.040 --> 00:04:35.680 So about 2008, an acquaintance of mine, it'd be a little too much to call her a friend, she was a friend of a friend who is a documentary filmmaker. 00:04:35.920 --> 00:04:43.199 Name was Laura Walters Henson, released what to me is one of the most powerful documentaries I've ever seen. 00:04:43.519 --> 00:04:53.120 It's titled As We Forgive, and it chronicles some of the aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. 00:04:53.360 --> 00:04:58.000 Now, some of you remember this, others of you, I may need to give you the backstory. 00:04:58.240 --> 00:05:28.079 In 1994, the nation of Rwanda just exploded into a just spasm of intratribal violence, racial violence, in which in just days, hundreds of thousands of Rwandan citizens were murdered, now, often with things like machetes, by their neighbors just because of what race they were and what tribe they came from. 00:05:29.839 --> 00:05:34.079 And in the aftermath of this, the government was just completely overwhelmed. 00:05:34.160 --> 00:05:40.160 You see, you don't set up a justice system to simultaneously investigate about 400,000 murders. 00:05:41.199 --> 00:05:54.879 And years later, having this unbelievable backlog of cases and no clear way to deal with it, the Rwandan government released 50,000 perpetrators back into the very communities that they had tried to destroy. 00:05:56.639 --> 00:06:00.079 In such a situation, justice just isn't going to happen. 00:06:00.319 --> 00:06:02.879 It didn't and it wouldn't. 00:06:03.120 --> 00:06:16.000 And so the Rwandan people were faced with the challenge of a much more difficult road to try to understand what forgiveness and reconciliation would look like in a situation like this. 00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:22.879 And this documentary that she created follows the story of two ladies. 00:06:24.240 --> 00:06:39.120 Two ladies who are trying to follow forgiveness as they, in fact, meet the two men who slaughtered their gash in your soul, or sometimes even when it's not that deep, but it's, do you believe he did that? 00:07:52.399 --> 00:07:54.480 Do you believe what my boyfriend said? 00:07:55.120 --> 00:07:56.560 of taking it out on the other person, even while we're saying, oh, I forgive you. 00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:35.360 Something about forgiveness just doesn't come easy. 00:08:35.440 --> 00:08:37.600 And this morning we want to ask the question, why? 00:08:37.759 --> 00:08:39.120 Why are we that way? 00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:41.919 Why is forgiveness so hard? 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:45.360 And being so hard, why is it almost always untried? 00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:51.679 And as we trace the narrative of Jonah that God's given us here, we learn why. 00:08:52.159 --> 00:08:56.559 Because we're going to see that this is a story of a prophet who just doesn't get it. 00:08:58.320 --> 00:09:05.759 Even more than that, it's actually the story of us, why we just don't get it when it comes to forgiveness. 00:09:13.200 --> 00:09:24.240 And Jonah 1 and 2 tell us that the reason we find it so difficult to forgive is because we haven't really understood what God's done for us in Jesus Christ. 00:09:25.440 just don't get it. 00:09:44.080 --> 00:09:46.559 So let's think about the first of these, that we sin. 00:09:47.039 --> 00:09:58.480 This passage makes a lot more sense if you can hold in mind what you might call the distinction between a surface level sin, a behavioral sin, and a deep sin, what you might call an identity level sin. 00:09:58.639 --> 00:10:03.679 Jonathan Edwards, who is the great Puritan preacher, used to talk about this. 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:08.240 And he would say there are all sorts of sins we commit that are behavioral sins. 00:10:08.480 --> 00:10:13.840 They're up at sort of floating on the surface of our life, and they're wrong, and we should stop them. 00:10:14.480 --> 00:10:20.240 But it's really hard to stop them if you don't get underneath them and ask the deeper question, why am I doing that? 00:10:20.480 --> 00:10:23.600 What deeper sin is driving the behavior? 00:10:23.759 --> 00:10:25.120 So here's one from my life. 00:10:25.279 --> 00:10:27.600 Um, and maybe this will illustrate it. 00:10:27.759 --> 00:10:36.000 I have spent about the past ten years consistently overwhelmed from the combination of being a student, working full-time, and trying to be a husband and a dad. 00:10:36.240 --> 00:10:38.639 So my inbox is a disaster. 00:10:38.879 --> 00:10:44.399 My voice inbox isn't much better, and I've lived life on the tyranny of the urgent. 00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:47.759 And so oftentimes I get sent an email that's not a problem. 00:10:48.320 --> 00:10:51.440 But of course, because it's not urgent, I don't deal with it for five weeks. The question is, what do I believe about myself and about God underneath that that drives me to behave that way? 00:11:37.120 --> 00:11:44.960 You know, at the moment I commit that sin, it's more important to me to look good in one of your eyes than it is to be truthful before the Lord. 00:11:48.240 --> 00:11:57.519 And if you can start to work on that sin, if I can get over my silly fear of everybody else, maybe the stuff on the surface will start to change. 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:03.360 You know, if you're dealing with anger, this is the kind of thing you could say, I've just got to the sin about myself that feels like I deserve better than this? 00:12:14.879 --> 00:12:19.120 You know, if you're looking at stuff on the internet that you shouldn't, you can say, I just gotta stop right? 00:12:52.960 --> 00:12:56.639 His job, verse one, is to be a prophet of God. 00:12:56.879 --> 00:13:00.960 A prophet's job is to say what God tells him to say. 00:13:01.919 --> 00:13:03.679 So, what does God tell him to say? 00:13:03.919 --> 00:13:11.759 Verse 2 go to Nineveh, preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me. 00:13:13.120 --> 00:13:14.320 But what does Jonah do? 00:13:14.480 --> 00:13:17.279 Well, knowing a little geography will help. 00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:22.879 Nineveh is to the north and east of Israel. 00:13:23.200 --> 00:13:24.799 You go there by land. 00:13:25.519 --> 00:13:28.000 There's no water involved in the trip. 00:13:28.240 --> 00:13:35.840 So when Jonah goes down to a port and gets on a ship bound for Tarshish, which would have been one of several Phoenician ports, we don't know which one. 00:13:36.320 --> 00:13:41.679 Any of the options are south and west of Israel. 00:13:41.919 --> 00:13:44.559 So Jonah isn't just taking a roundabout way. 00:13:44.639 --> 00:13:45.919 He's not doing slow obedience. 00:13:46.080 --> 00:13:50.399 Jonah is going the exact opposite way from where God has told him to go. 00:13:51.120 --> 00:13:54.000 And verses 3 and verses 10 tell us why. 00:13:54.240 --> 00:13:56.480 Because he's running away from the Lord. 00:13:58.399 --> 00:14:04.799 That's the surface level sin, but that doesn't 00:14:20.240 Now, as we try to get to the sin under the sin in this passage, right off the bat, recognize that it's probably not an issue of knowledge. 00:14:21.840 --> 00:14:24.080 Jonah knows a lot about God. 00:14:24.480 --> 00:14:25.440 He's a prophet. 00:14:25.600 --> 00:14:30.559 He talks to God, he prays, he hears from God in a way you and I never have. 00:14:31.360 --> 00:14:35.600 Even in verse 9, when the sailors say, Who is this God you're running away from? 00:14:35.759 --> 00:14:40.879 He says, Oh, it's the God who made everything heaven and earth, the sea and the land and everything else. 00:14:40.960 --> 00:14:42.399 And they get real quiet. 00:14:43.600 --> 00:14:46.080 Jonah knows, that's an orthodox confession. 00:14:46.240 --> 00:14:49.360 Jonah knows all the stuff he's supposed to know. 00:14:52.240 --> 00:14:54.399 Yet he's alien to God. 00:14:54.480 --> 00:14:56.559 He's in rebellion to God, he's running from God. 00:14:56.639 --> 00:14:59.360 And this raises a very disturbing point. 00:15:00.480 --> 00:15:02.399 We can know all the right stuff. 00:15:02.559 --> 00:15:10.720 We can say all the right things, we can pray, and yet still have a heart that is completely apart from the Lord's heart. 00:15:11.840 --> 00:15:15.600 It's not knowledge that's, at least not much, the problem for Jonah. 00:15:15.759 --> 00:15:16.159 What is it? 00:15:16.320 --> 00:15:17.840 What's the sin under the sin? 00:15:18.399 --> 00:15:20.480 Well, you know, it might be fear. 00:15:20.639 --> 00:15:22.559 Let me tell you a little bit about Nineveh. 00:15:22.960 --> 00:15:32.559 It's the capital of the nation of Assyria, which in the ancient world of that time was the biggest, baddest, most expansionist, most powerful nation the world had ever known. 00:15:32.879 --> 00:15:34.639 These were bad dudes. 00:15:34.879 --> 00:15:37.039 And they were ruthless on the battlefield. 00:15:37.120 --> 00:15:39.200 They had taken over everything around them. 00:15:39.279 --> 00:15:43.120 They in fact were busy taking over Israel at various points. 00:15:43.360 --> 00:15:47.039 The worst dudes the world had ever known, with the biggest spears the world had ever known. 00:15:47.279 --> 00:15:53.840 How do you think they're going to take it if this punk Israelite stroll into their capital city and says, You're wicked? 00:15:54.960 --> 00:15:57.440 You can understand why Jonah might be a little afraid, right? 00:15:58.639 --> 00:16:00.080 There's more going on than that. 00:16:02.879 --> 00:16:06.159 Let me tell you a little more about the Ninevehites, the Assyrians. 00:16:06.320 --> 00:16:09.200 They weren't just good at taking over countries militarily. 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:14.879 They were incredibly adept at terrorizing the countries they took over. 00:16:15.279 --> 00:16:22.960 They had figured out how to impale men on stakes in such a way that they would last three days in the ancient sun before they finally died. 00:16:24.559 --> 00:16:27.200 They abused women of all ages. 00:16:28.399 --> 00:16:32.159 They would tear babies out of their mother's arms and throw them into the ground. 00:16:32.320 --> 00:16:37.360 These were horrible people by any of the world's standards. 00:16:38.559 --> 00:16:45.840 And we don't know exactly when the book of Jonah was written, but at any time when it might have been written, they were attacking Israel. 00:16:46.720 --> 00:16:51.279 So these are Israel's sworn enemies, and they're vile. 00:16:52.639 --> 00:16:54.159 Why doesn't Jonah want to go? 00:16:54.320 --> 00:16:56.000 Because he hates these people. 00:16:56.720 --> 00:17:00.639 They're the sworn enemies of him and everything he stands for. 00:17:01.679 --> 00:17:03.200 But even that doesn't explain it. 00:17:03.279 --> 00:17:04.240 Because look at verse 2. 00:17:04.319 --> 00:17:06.960 What's the message God asks him to take? 00:17:08.079 --> 00:17:10.960 Preach against it, for its wickedness to come up before me. 00:17:11.039 --> 00:17:13.680 What prophet who's an Israelite wouldn't want to do that? 00:17:13.920 --> 00:17:15.599 Guess what, suckers? 00:17:15.839 --> 00:17:19.599 God has had it with you, and he's going to judge your sin. 00:17:21.359 --> 00:17:23.039 But Jonah runs the other way. 00:17:23.279 --> 00:17:23.680 Why? 00:17:25.839 --> 00:17:32.079 Well, chapter 4, verse 3, that we'll look at next week will confirm this is why. 00:17:32.799 --> 00:17:45.440 Because Jonah knows that if he goes and preaches the message God sends, it's possible that these people will When a prophet comes and declares judgment, Jeremiah 18 says this is true in general. 00:17:54.079 --> 00:17:57.359 Jonah 4 confirms this is what's going on in Jonah's case. 00:17:57.599 --> scare them straight, to make them realize how their behavior has an impact. 00:18:10.319 --> 00:18:16.960 And so when Jonah goes, he knows that God intends to use this to cause them to repent and then forgive all their sins. 00:18:17.359 --> 00:18:19.519 And Jonah doesn't want it. 00:18:21.519 --> 00:18:28.480 Jonah can't fathom that someone like that might receive God's mercy. 00:18:30.960 --> us to get because we sin. 00:18:56.160 --> 00:19:00.640 You know, if there's any empirical fact in the entire world I can establish, it's that we sin. 00:19:00.960 --> 00:19:02.559 We do things wrong. 00:31:03.200 When the grace you've received really does open you to let it go, to get rid of it, to forgive it. 00:31:05.039 --> 00:31:11.359 Now look, in the world we live in, it is very complex how to work that out. 00:31:11.759 --> 00:31:22.079 There are some abuse situations, there are some other situations where it is terribly unwise, wrong, even dangerous for you to go back and be in touch
