prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:49.840 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God. 00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:50.719 Jesus knew all this. 00:00:50.799 --> 00:00:51.920 Okay, so then verse 4. 00:00:52.159 --> 00:00:57.039 So he got up from the meal, he took off his outer clothing, he wrapped a towel around his waist. 00:00:57.200 --> 00:01:04.879 After that he poured water into a basin and he began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around them. 00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:09.599 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet? 00:01:10.079 --> 00:01:14.719 Jesus replied, You do not realize now what I'm doing, but later you will understand. 00:01:14.959 --> 00:01:21.280 So Jesus is sort of saying, like, there's more, there's even more going on here than what's going on right now. 00:01:22.799 --> 00:01:26.239 And Simon Peter says, No, you shall never wash my feet. 00:01:26.400 --> 00:01:31.040 And Jesus answered, Well, unless I wash you, you have no part with me. 00:01:31.280 they're up in the upper room. 00:01:53.599 --> 00:02:00.319 So they're in the upper room of a home in Jerusalem, and they're having a meal before the Passover festival begins. 00:02:00.560 --> 00:02:04.480 Now, when you entered somebody's home, a lot of people would have a servant. 00:02:04.560 --> 00:02:13.039 And so when you enter people's home, you had all these dirty feet because people were wearing sandals, dirty streets, animals in the streets, filthy, dirty feet. 00:02:13.280 --> 00:02:17.199 And so you would come into somebody's home and the servant would come and wash your feet. 00:02:17.360 --> 00:02:23.439 Now, if there's no servant there, then the person of the lowliest position in the group would assume the role. 00:02:23.680 --> 00:02:28.719 Now, what we have here is we have the disciples and Jesus have come into the home. 00:02:28.879 --> 00:02:30.319 Obviously, there's no servant there. 00:02:30.639 --> 00:02:35.680 They've gathered in the upper room, and everybody is still with their dirty feet. 00:02:35.919 --> 00:02:38.240 Nobody has assumed the lowliest position. 00:02:38.319 --> 00:02:45.599 In fact, in Luke, we read that disciples are actually having an argument about who's the greatest among them. 00:02:45.840 --> 00:02:46.960 Don't you just love that? 00:02:47.199 --> 00:02:51.280 I mean, so nobody's willing to take on that lowliest position. 00:02:51.520 --> 00:02:53.199 In fact, they're actually doing the opposite. 00:02:53.360 --> 00:02:56.479 They're having an argument about who's the greatest. 00:02:56.719 --> 00:02:59.120 And we kind of do this in our own way, in our own culture. 00:02:59.199 --> 00:03:01.599 But in their culture, this had to do with the washing of feet. 00:03:01.759 --> 00:03:14.879 So Jesus is there and he's watching this play out, and he decides he's going to not only foreshadow something he's about to do on the cross, but he's also going to teach them something about what greatness and importance really is. 00:03:14.960 --> 00:03:21.919 And so he gets up from the table, takes his robe off, puts a towel around his waist, so he assumes the position of a servant. 00:03:22.080 --> 00:03:23.759 He puts water in a basin. 00:03:23.919 --> 00:03:31.439 And at this point, you you know the disciples are uh they're just, what what's going on? 00:03:32.159 --> 00:03:34.719 Like, why is he doing this? 00:03:48.560 Hope nobody sees this. 00:03:49.039 --> 00:04:04.639 I mean, I mean, they're not gonna think that our master is really important, that our rabbi is a really important, great rabbi, and Jesus is just over there getting everything together, putting his, getting the towel on, getting the water in the basin, and starting to wash feet. 00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:15.840 And it is such a story about the fact that God is a servant king to us, that he's willing to do that for us. 00:04:16.879 --> 00:04:18.959 Kings are served, right? 00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:22.160 I mean, kings are served, but story in Mark chapter 10 is two brothers, uh, James and John, they come to Jesus and they say, Hey, Jesus, when when you get to glory, when you get to eternity, um, and we get there, uh, can we can we sit on your right and on your left? 00:05:04.079 --> 00:05:08.319 Like, can we get, all right, we don't want to be as important as you. 00:05:08.480 --> 00:05:11.360 We get that, but we want to be really esteemed. 00:05:11.519 --> 00:05:18.959 We want everybody to know us, everybody to see us, when everybody, you know, you know, maybe when everybody's singing, maybe like they're singing toward us. 00:05:19.199 --> 00:05:25.600 It'll go to you, but we really want to be really close into that, and we want to get all the handshakes and the pats on the back. 00:05:25.680 --> 00:05:28.319 And Jesus just says, you know, these places aren't for you. 00:05:28.480 --> 00:05:30.240 Like what you're talking about, not good for you. 00:05:30.319 --> 00:05:31.439 That's not good for you. Because they want the same position, they're all jockeying. 00:05:39.759 --> 00:05:45.680 And then in Mark 10, verse 43, Jesus says this same thing is going on in this story in John 13. 00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:48.959 Whoever wants to become great among you, you want to become great? 00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:54.879 Here's what he says you must be a servant, and whoever wants to be first must be a slave to all. 00:05:55.040 --> 00:05:56.399 So, what is Jesus doing? 00:05:56.480 --> 00:06:05.040 Well, Jesus is, he's revolutionizing our thinking about importance and what it means to be important, and how do we find importance? 00:06:05.199 --> 00:06:15.920 I mean, I spend vast amounts of energy, just like you, I spend vast amounts of energy trying to figure out how I can feel more important in this world. 00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:32.160 And there's this part of me that thinks if our church becomes successful enough, and whatever subjectivity I'm gonna create to say what that is, if it becomes successful enough, then all of a sudden I will feel important enough. 00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:44.800 So I so I'm building a life that I'm building a life that matters, but there's this part of ego that really needs that to define importance in me. 00:06:45.920 --> 00:06:54.560 And when this happens, that ego, so fragile, that ego, it just creates anxiety and fear. 00:06:56.240 --> 00:06:58.560 You you know what I'm talking about. 00:06:58.959 --> 00:07:18.000 Like when your job or your career, your role in life, it ceases to be about providing for your family or providing for yourself, and ceases to be about helping society as a whole or helping uh create jobs, and it ceases to be about that, and it starts to be about sort of bolstering your ego every time. 00:07:18.240 --> 00:07:25.759 Every time you think, oh, I'm creating more importance for me, it actually starts to create more anxiety and more fear. 00:07:28.959 --> 00:07:32.399 We do it with what we look like in our culture, --> 00:08:33.279 Under that, under the activity, and other work, and other maybe family or friends, under underneath all of that, it's just like this this heart that is just waiting for somebody to speak Spanish, and and we've known each other for 10 years, and we got this weird friendship where we don't speak each other's language, but we really have a good time together. 00:12:07.039 --> where we want to serve somebody else without wanting the position of being important? 00:13:29.039 --> 00:13:31.759 So the the question to answer that, we have to answer this question. 00:13:32.080 50-year-old, as a mom, as a dad, as a student, what makes me important? 00:13:45.279 --> 00:13:51.120 So back to John 13, Jesus is on his knees in front of his friends and he is washing their feet. 00:13:51.279 --> 00:13:55.519 He gets to Peter in verse 6, and Peter says, Are you gonna wash my feet? 00:13:55.679 --> 00:13:58.639 Like, this is not the way to importance, Jesus. 00:13:58.720 --> 00:14:08.159 And we thought you were important because we've seen you in front of like political powers, standing up to them, we've seen you heal people, we've seen you preach, thousands of people, and you are looking really important. 00:14:08.639 --> 00:14:10.879 This is this is not it, Jesus. 00:14:10.960 --> 00:14:12.720 I don't want, I don't want you to wash my feet. 00:14:12.799 --> 00:14:18.639 And Jesus says, Well, newsbreak, unless I wash your feet, you have no part with me. 00:14:18.799 --> 00:14:26.399 And here's what Jesus is saying unless you let me come into your mess of insecurity and sin. 00:14:28.080 --> 00:14:41.200 And the way that you try to go look for identity in other places, and the way you try to build your own righteousness instead of relying on me for Lord Simon Peter replied, Not just my feet, but my hands and my head as well. 00:15:55.600 --> 00:15:56.320 So he gets excited. 00:15:56.799 --> 00:15:57.360 I'm in Jesus. 00:15:59.120 --> 00:15:59.759 Wash everything. 00:15:59.919 --> 00:16:05.600 And Jesus answered, Those who have had a bath, and you only need to wash their feet, their whole body is clean. 00:16:05.759 --> 00:16:09.039 And you are clean, though not every one of you. 00:16:09.279 --> 00:16:10.320 So he's talking about Judas. 00:16:10.399 --> 00:16:11.679 Judas is the traitor later on. 00:16:11.840 -->
