00:03:59.840 Here's how he thinks about idolatry. 00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:11.680 He says, an idol is anything we look to for what only God can ultimately give: identity, security, worth, control, comfort, hope. 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:26.480 So what that means is that success, family, approval, work, all really good things, when they become idols, when our heart tries to pull out of them acceptance, identity, security, hope, they function as saviors in our life. 00:04:26.639 --> 00:04:28.959 They become a functional savior. 00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:30.800 Our heart craves them. Father's Curse, the Ungrateful Son, is the painting on the left in 1777. 00:07:10.240 --> 00:07:19.439 And you see the son's reaching, but he's being pulled away by the world, and the father's on the far left reaching out to him, but the father's not physically restraining him, the father is letting him go. 00:07:20.560 --> 00:07:28.879 And then Gres paints the painting on the right the next year the due penalty for their error. 00:08:44.080 --> 00:08:50.799 Point number three is this idolatry takes our sight, the ability to see what's right and wrong and good, takes our sight and enslaves us.
