Hello, welcome back. Uh don't forget Follow Zeus's Law. Bring in the beggars. Welcome in. We're talking about the Odyssey.
SPEAKER_02We are talking about the Odyssey. I was not aware you were doing that. Um The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan. Yeah. Let's just get right into it. Before we talk about everything deep wise, anything, just real quick, did you like the movie?
SPEAKER_00I really enjoyed it. At first, I was like, this is alright.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm not gonna lie to you. The opening for me, I did not dislike the opening at all. I don't I'm not saying that. It was well written, it was fine. I felt just going in getting into the groove of the movie. It it just took me a minute to really grasp onto it. Like it took me a minute to get used to the Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, the way their dialogue was. Not complaining about the dad shit, just the way they were talking. It was a little slow at first, but then it kind of gripped me as it as it went on. Does that make sense? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00For me, it was more of a because my hallmarks of like really liking a movie is I don't know, you get that like feeling in your chest of just like, oh wait, this feels uh unique. Like this is like I'm experiencing something phenomenal. And like in the beginning of the film, I wasn't getting that quite yet.
SPEAKER_02You just kind of drop into the movie. There's not like a great big intro in the same sense. It just kind of you drop into the story.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, I really enjoyed the slow build up, but by the time the credits rolled, I was like, oh shit, I love that. And that was great. So yeah, uh the movie like just real plainly worked for me.
SPEAKER_02I enjoyed the movie as holistically. Yeah, I thought it was fine. Um do you want to go a quick one out of ten rating?
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, one out of ten. I gave uh I told Christian this uh last night, like originally at my uh it'd be one out of ten, I think I gave it like eight, eight point five.
SPEAKER_02I was around like an eight point five as well. Like I don't think it's the greatest movie ever made. No by any meaning. And I'm not I think from a pure movie making standpoint, it's truly fascinating and fantastic in every which way. Yes. The story itself is very gripping. Yeah, it's just maybe because it's an older story, maybe because I don't maybe I don't really love um these big I don't love big epics, yeah. It's not my go-to kind of movie. Like, I'm not I don't hate Lawrence of Arabia. I've seen that movie, I really like that movie. It's just not Sox and Sandals epics aren't usually my go-to kind of films as we've talked about. I'm more of a character guy rather than these big overarching stories. But this I really enjoyed as a whole, and I thought it was very interesting to watch it all play out and just watch Chris Nolan do Chris Nolan things. And I I gave it about an 8.5 to 8.8 range.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. No, for me, uh what I told Christian was I think this Odyssey, like every generation has their version of the Odyssey.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, for uh millennials, it's a Spongebob movie. Yes. For Gen Gen Xers, it's oh brother, where art thou?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And I think this is the new generation's version of the Odyssey movie. Well, you know why?
SPEAKER_03Because it's called The Odyssey.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_03I'm not gonna, I mean, it's it's every generation.
SPEAKER_02It's now this is now gonna be the movie that's showed in TV classrooms in like 10 years, some TV, some history, some nah, I don't want to rephrase that. In 10 years, some high school football coach is gonna be like in history class and be like, we're watching the Odyssey today. He's gonna put and everyone's gonna be like, oh, I don't want to watch this boring movie, and then they're gonna get locked in after the first like 20 minutes. Yes. It's like when your teacher and you've never seen Saving Private Ryan puts on Saving Private Ryan, and you're like, ugh, we're gonna watch a war movie. Uh but then you watch, you're like, holy shit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I think this is the new uh baseline for the odd, like if somebody's like, Oh, you you've never heard of the Odyssey? Like, no, like, no, you've heard of it. Let me let me show you this. And then you show them the Odyssey, like, oh my lord, like this is fantastic. And that's what uh that's what I really loved about it. I think it's like holistically it captures the general story and the themes within the Odyssey throughout. It it captures that like perfectly well.
SPEAKER_02Now I've never read the Odyssey, but you were telling me the movie does it differently because the book is more straightforward, it's more linear. Yeah, it's not counting around, jumping back and forth. This movie is very much a Chris Nolan movie where it's the storyline is not sequential of liberty. It's it's not even that. I more mean the way it's like jumping around. Yes. You're moving from different points in time. So like when he's talking to Calypso on the beach, you're hearing it's almost interesting too because the Odyssey It's like a retelling. Yeah, the Odyssey, you oh you were telling I I knew this already, but it's a it's a spoken word story. It's a poem, right? That's passed down. And the way they use like to cut to the scenes to show what was happening, it would start with them explaining it, and then it cuts to them. You actually see it. And I thought that was interesting, and like maybe a nice homage to the fact that these are all spoken word stories. Yeah. And how these stories get created and passed down throughout people.
SPEAKER_00No, uh, and I don't know if that makes sense or not, but yeah, no, it does, because the movie opens up with uh the bard, Travis Scott's character. I don't even know if they gave him the name besides the bard, but Travis Scott's character, he's telling the story of the fall of Troy and Odysseus's great like triumph. And great casting, by the way, honestly. It worked for me. People who could play it. It makes sense. I didn't I was like, oh, I wonder what he's doing, but like uh It's better than having Drake in there because you a rapper, uh an artist, their whole job is to tell a story through prose and song. Who who else the better to fit that role besides a artist, uh sing song or songwriter, a rapper, anybody? And I think Travis Scott is like perfect for it.
SPEAKER_02Just to go on a quick little tangent. If you had to recast that role, what's another rapper you would use in the role of uh the bard?
SPEAKER_00Role of the bard.
SPEAKER_02So if you were recasting Travis Scott, no disc Travis Scott, you were great in the movie. But if you were recasting the bard for a different actor, who is it?
SPEAKER_00I really want to stick within like the We're gonna stick in rapping, rap rappers.
SPEAKER_02I didn't prep you for this question, so I don't expect like a phenomenal answer or anything like that. This is just off the dome just now.
SPEAKER_00But off the dome. Uh it has to be somebody really good in uh storytelling.
SPEAKER_02I think it would be storytelling, but also a great lyricist is very important.
SPEAKER_00Andre 3000.
SPEAKER_02That's a great one. Would be a lot of things. His unique voice would also be really cool to hear with it too.
SPEAKER_00Because with great storytellers are flamboyant. They're they they tell a story with all of them. They just don't recite it word for word, they add flavor to it. I think Audrey 3000 would be a perfect, like if Travis Scott couldn't do it, I think Andrew 3000, where he's at in life, perfect for it.
SPEAKER_02Can I throw you a kind of a a weirder one? Yes, it's gonna be not as popular of a pick, probably, or it but it's very similar to Audrey 3000. Kevin Abstract.
SPEAKER_00That would work.
SPEAKER_02I think that would be it. It'd be if you're gonna go younger.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't heard Brockhampton in like forever.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So but no, that that is that is man. Oh, I don't heard them in like 80 years.
SPEAKER_03I love Brock Hampton. I don't we we can stop making music. And my first thought when I heard Brock Hampton for the first time was like, we're done. We can stop making music. These guys peaked. This is it. There's nothing else we need to do. Brockhampton. Sugar.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, tragically broke up, but I mean for good reasons.
SPEAKER_03You know about Heath Ledger with some dreads?
SPEAKER_00But no, uh, back to the Odyssey in the wonderful story about that. Like, we have uh name Travis Scott as the bard. Uh we have Tom Holland as Telemachus.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, uh going through the cast, you want to go through the cast for the cards?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, go through the cast real quick to refresh.
SPEAKER_02I'm not gonna say all of them, because every single character in this movie is played by a famous person in some way. Like, I mean uh uh let's see who we got. We got Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Temeculus, Anne Hathaway as Telemachus. Telemachus, sorry, what'd I say? Telemach Temeculus, my father. Telemachus. Telemachus, my fault. Anne Hathaway as Penelope. Yep. Uh Robert Panson as how do you say it? Yes. Okay. Lupton and Lupte? Lupta? I don't know how to say her last name. I've always fucked it up. Ganyu?
SPEAKER_00Uh I'm not even gonna uh pretend to know.
SPEAKER_02Lupte as Helen of Troy. We'll just cut that. Uh John Bernthal as Melanus. Melanus? You should maybe read these names instead of me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, probably. We're we're already here this.
SPEAKER_02How about where we restart this?
SPEAKER_00No, no, no. I'm gonna hand you the list. Keep it, keep it. We're gonna rock with it. You're gonna Greek names are hard. Yeah, they are. They're fucking a bitch. And I read this shit.
SPEAKER_02I've never read the Odyssey. I read the first part of the Iliad because I had to. Yeah. Uh Benny Safti as uh Agamemnon. Yay! Yeah, fuck you. As a Dea as Athena, Charlie Charlie's Therone as Calypso, Bill Irwin as Poleminus, uh, John Leguizamos. As a not I don't Emunis. Eus?
SPEAKER_00I don't know how to say that. Yeah, the uh the pigard. The blind guy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Those I uh Hemish Patel as Urculus.
SPEAKER_00Eurillus?
SPEAKER_02Uryl. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I don't fucking doubt that. I'm pretty sure it's Urillus, but you know. Uh I'm not gonna sit up here and act like I am well pros in the world. No, this is gonna be names.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna get fucking destroyed for my pronunciation of all that shit.
SPEAKER_00Hey, I mean, who cares? Uh I care. Uh they already hit my hair. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then, you know, we have some controversial castings as well. Elliot Page is in the movie, because people fucking care about three minutes of screen time.
SPEAKER_00Literally dies in the beginning.
SPEAKER_02Literally, within the first five minutes.
SPEAKER_00But his scene in hell.
SPEAKER_02Really good.
SPEAKER_00Fantastic. Fantastic. Fantastic.
SPEAKER_02I thought that scene was that who was the blindfolded guy? Whoever that was, I thought that shit.
SPEAKER_00I don't know who the actor was.
SPEAKER_02I don't know who it was because I couldn't tell. I thought that shit was fan fucking tastic. That was probably my scene in the movie. And also the way the trailers made it, when they were showing that same clip from the trailers, it was Matt Damon saying, I thought that was like a scene before like a big war or something. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Not them running away. Yeah. I had no idea that was it.
SPEAKER_00It's it's fantastic. That was good editing with the trailer. Yes. Um that, what else? Uh that was a cool scene. My favorite scene, we'll get into our favorite scenes later. There's one like my favorite scene happens at like close to the end of the film.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_00But no, um, yeah, we list the actors.
SPEAKER_02Uh you know what's funny is uh Chris Nolan has a big history of reworking with the same actors over and over again. Like he puts new ones in his movies every time, but he kind of has like a group of people he goes back to a lot. Like in the early days, Killian Murphy was in so many Chris Nolan movies. He's in all the Batman ones, obviously in Oppenheimer. Um Matt Damon, this is his second Chris, or no, third Chris Nolan movie, because he's in Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Ann Hathaway, this is her third, she's in Dark Knight Rises in Interstellar. Robert Pattinson, this is his second, with Tenet as the first. Elliot Page, this is his second, uh, with his role in Inception. Um Benny Safety was in Oppenheimer. You have Hymish Patel was in Tenet, Josh Stewart was in Dark Knight Rises, and James Ramarr was in Oppenheimer as well as this. Which it's very interesting. How do you feel about a director using the same kind of actors over and over again in their works?
SPEAKER_00I love that. Honestly, it's um it's almost like you're working with like friends at a point, but like not just like, oh I'm casting my friend because they're my friend. Like, no.
SPEAKER_02You also know when you're casting in a Chris Knoll movie, you're one of the best actors in the world.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like it is it is a sign of prestige.
SPEAKER_02It like because Anne Hathaway said it really recently in an interview, I can't remember what interview it was with, but she was like, if you work on a Chris Knoll in production, you're one of the top three people in the world at what you do, whether it's a gaffer, whether it's cinematographer, lighting, everything. You are a top three person at what you do because he only works with the best. Yes. He only works with people he trusts and that he believes will put out the best possible version of his work.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and he's he takes his work very seriously, and like everybody everybody wanted to work for you and like uh it it to me it's a it's a sign of like like you said, trust. Like if if I'm calling up like, oh, only Matt Damon can play uh Odysseus. I don't know if he the casting and how that all worked, if he like wrote it like, oh, this is only a Matt Damon role. I don't know how that worked. I don't know the casting how it works for it.
SPEAKER_02Well, because he probably I don't because I mean he makes a movie roughly, it looks like about every three years. So I imagine some of the production for this was already happening and the tail end of production of Oppenheimer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So I can't imagine I have to imagine that the conversations took place on the set of Oppenheimer about this movie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Oh. And I I I I love that because to me it's it um it there's something so unique about like a director and actor uh pairing, like we talked about uh Jorgos Latimos and uh Emma Stone Emma Stone.
SPEAKER_02They're kind of they're synonymous now.
SPEAKER_00I'm expecting to see Emma Stone.
SPEAKER_02You see a Tarantina movie, you know what actor you're gonna see?
SPEAKER_00Who? That's a good question.
SPEAKER_02Sam Jackson. The fuck?
SPEAKER_00Sam Jackson?
SPEAKER_02Is he outside of res outside of Reservoir Dogs, he's in almost every Tarantino movie.
SPEAKER_00Once Upon a Time? Yeah. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02No, he's not he's not in that one, but a lot a big chunk of Tarantino movies.
SPEAKER_00He's in yeah, he's in a big one. Yeah, he's in a lot of them.
SPEAKER_02But I mean, Brad Pitts in multiple Tarantino movies, you have Harvey Kaitel in multiple Tarantino movies, Steve Buscemi's in multiple Tarantino movies. He likes you uh Uma Thurman.
SPEAKER_00Uma Thurman, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Tarantino, these great directors oftentimes use actors they're comfortable with that they feel can Because they know what they can get out of them, they know their range, and also as far as Tarantino goes, he's doing it for another reason because all of his movies are connected somehow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like you got people who are grandsons of other people and other there's a theory that Cliff Booth from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's the dad of the dude from True Romance, uh Brad Pitt's character, because he plays both of them. Um same with Inglorious Bastards, Brad Pitt being the grandfather of uh Brad Pitt's character on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Sure. That's the every Tarantino movie is connected in some way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you know, Go Off King, I guess.
SPEAKER_02Uh there's also the Tarantino movie universe within the movie universe as well. You know about that, don't you? No. Yeah, so like Tarrantino, some of his movies take place within his movies. Like Kill Bill and Till Dust Till Dawn are movies with inside the Tarantino movie universe. So like Kill Bill is a movie that like the Reservoir Dogs cast after they're on Robin Banks would go see Kill Bill. They would go see Till Dust Till Dawn. A movie inside of a movie. That's why they're slightly more graphic and more gory. Is because it's a reflection upon like the world itself. Like in that that universe is way more graphic and stuff like that. And in the movie universe, it gets it's dialed up to 11 because it's a movie. Sure. That's that's real. That is a fact. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's called the Realer Than Real universe.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Uh that's that's neat, a little bit too much of a cook for me, but you know, go off.
SPEAKER_02I think it helps when these movies were coming out over the course of like 25 years, and he wasn't like outwardly being like, This movie's a direct sequel to that movie. They're like subtle and you gotta find it yourself. Yeah, and then at some point they'll like, oh yeah, this is what I Well and also he uses the same cigarettes in every movie, like it's his brand. He's he's also in every movie. Fun fact. Yeah, he just drops the Edward a lot.
SPEAKER_00When you write, yeah, you can do whatever you want, I guess. Uh but yeah, Odyssey.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, back to the Odyssey. Let's we've been talking about let's have a conversation about Nolan. Do you think Nolan is the director of the century?
SPEAKER_00Director of the Century. Nolan, director of the century.
SPEAKER_02And if not, who? Because I mean, there isn't someone who's been putting out more consistently, and that's continuously great. Now you could say some of now none of his movies are bad. He has movies that are worse than his best movies, like Dark Knight Rises is probably his worst movie. That or Insomnia are the following. Those are his three worst, but they're all still good movies, they're just like the worst comparatively to the rest of his work. I mean, I personally love almost every Nolan movie. I mean, Memento is one of my favorites. Tenet isn't my favorite, but I enjoy how it is purely made. There's just a lot of great work he's put out. Oppenheimer last year, Interstellar. When you really think about it, I don't know if there's another director who has been consistently putting out this high level of work that are so universally loved by the most part by most people.
SPEAKER_00I know. Um yeah, to answer your question, uh, I don't know. Like preemptively, like tentatively, I'd probably say yes. Just because I don't think, like, like you're saying, like, nobody's put out this much of a collection of like bodies of work.
SPEAKER_02I mean, you could maybe if you wanted to have a secondary on there, I mean Dennis Villanueva. Villan Villeneuve? Villanueva. I don't know if that's how you pronounce it. Villeneuve?
SPEAKER_00Villanueva.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Who cares?
SPEAKER_00But he's I'm pretty sure I'm right. There's Dennis Villanueva.
SPEAKER_02I don't know, there's no accent on it, so that's why it was throwing me off.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um no, I I love him. I think he's doing great things. I think uh if you can close out his Doom trilogy, I think he's he's up there.
SPEAKER_02It's yeah, it's Villeneuve.
SPEAKER_00Villeneuve?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_01Denis Villeneuve.
SPEAKER_00Denis Villeneuve.
SPEAKER_03Blackdrop.
SPEAKER_00Is that French?
SPEAKER_02Uh Canadian. Probably French Canadian. French Canadian, so yeah. Um little arc, that was funny. No, uh I mean he's someone you could argue. He's been putting out I mean, he did Sicario, Blade Runner, the Dune trilogy.
SPEAKER_002049 Dune trilogy.
SPEAKER_02Arrival, Prisoners, Enemy. That was so good. Prisoners is phenomenal, dude.
SPEAKER_00It's probably is that the one on the island?
SPEAKER_02No, Prisoners is uh the Jake Jill and Hall, Hugh Jackman, Hugh Jackman's kids get taken, Paul Dano.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Paul Dana, yeah. Where's my daughter? Yeah, smashing the the the sink next to the game.
SPEAKER_02It's got David uh Das Mocklin in it. I think that's how you say his name, but you could argue at least for the 2010s and on, you could argue Dennis.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no. Um, I think Dennis has put out a lot more works that I've like enjoyed a lot more than Christopher Nolan. Just on the works that like he's done. Like I like I've told Jesse this multiple times. I'm not that high on the Dark Knight uh trilogy that Christoph Nan made. I think they're fantastic Bruce Wayne films. They're not good Batman films.
SPEAKER_02Uh not calling good Batman films a little far. I would say they're not the best. I think The Batman is a better Batman movie, but Dark Knight and those movies are, like you said, are better Bruce Wayne stories as well as the best Joker story of all time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, uh that's what I mean.
SPEAKER_02Like Because honestly, Batman's kind of a boring character sometimes, like, because there's only so much you could do. But when you have great villains is what ex makes the movies excel.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then like uh Paul Dano as like the Riddler uh and the Batman, fantastic. Like that.
SPEAKER_02Keith Ledger as the Joker in the Dark Knight peak. And I I just like um I would argue with Chris Nolan purely for the like if you're talking about collectively, like if you polled the entire country, yeah. I think most people would just say Christopher Nolan. Because I think his movies are so universally loved, they're these giant epic spectacles, and they always are cohesively and they're smartly made and they're beautiful to look at. Dennis, I think, is more gonna fall into like if you like sci-fi. Because I don't think everyone's gonna see a Dennis movie.
SPEAKER_00And not everybody's gonna see Dune, which I don't think you should. Uh a real cool note if you see it in the 70 millimeter iMac, you get like the first three minutes of Dune. You get the prologue Messiah. Let me just tell you that I I've been real quick, I haven't seen a single Dune movie.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like the biggest gap in my filmography. Uh you're missing out, man. Yeah, I'm nearly not. But but I will say this that shit looked like saving private riot in space. Dude, I I that was my initial thought. I was like, this is just saving private riot, and this is dope.
SPEAKER_03I might watch the first two Dune movies now, just so I can see that scene.
SPEAKER_00Like, Dune one is I tried watching it three times and fell asleep three times. It is a struggle, like it's a very slow movie. And unfortunately, I was so pissed that I watched the first Dune on my TV at home because it was during COVID.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it wasn't released in theaters, was it? No. It was a HBO Max movie, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was released. It was it's so criminal that I saw this on my TV, and I refused to see uh Dune Part 2 on my TV, and I saw it in theaters, and it was the best experience. I like y'all know me, I'm a big sci-fi guy. I I love the Dune stories. I never read all of them, I'm just very familiar with it. Uh it it's just so oh, it's it's one of the best space operas like out there.
SPEAKER_02Have you seen the original Dune with David Lynch?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_02You should watch that.
SPEAKER_00I should watch that.
SPEAKER_02I've actually seen that one. Fun fact. I watched it in film class.
SPEAKER_00No. Uh yeah, uh yeah, we get the first three minutes, it's it's epic. I'll probably ever see that in 70mm IMAX because I love doing it.
SPEAKER_02But honestly, do we want to see it at the same theater we saw this at? That was an interesting experience. I loved seeing the movie in 70mm IMAX, but at the same time, those- The theater was weird. The theater was weird. There it didn't seem like there was a seat far enough back to be at a good angle to see the entire screen. Like, no matter where you sat, unlike the other uh IMAX theater I've been to, uh, the aquarium in Chattanooga, that one pushes you far enough back to where you're almost at the same height as the screen at one point. This one doesn't go far enough back for that. And also I hated the seats with a passion. The fact that they like weren't fixed and you had to like put effort into getting to recline back pissed me off because I kept having to like think about it. Yeah, um my back got stiff, my knees got stiff. I'm old. Shit hurt it.
SPEAKER_00I I didn't mind the the seats very much.
SPEAKER_02You know who did bind the seats, though? The guy at our seats.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel bad for that.
SPEAKER_02I felt so bad. So, real quick, uh, we pulled up to the movie last night. We saw it at 11 p.m. Dude was just before we walked in, that we heard some dude walking in being like, Oh, yeah, our seats are age 24 and 25. I heard that and I immediately checked my seats. I asked Devontae, what day is it? He goes, it's the 18th. I go, okay, yeah. That guy was just saying he's in our seat numbers, but maybe he just said the wrong number. Whatever, we'll move on. We go into our seat, dude's sitting right there, and I had to be the awful person basically to tell him, hey, you're my seat. He goes, No, no, no, look. I'm I go, that's for the 25th.
SPEAKER_00Wrong day, buddy.
SPEAKER_02I felt so bad. And then I we had an extra ticket with us, and I offered him that spot, but then he was with someone else, so it wouldn't have fit. No.
SPEAKER_00Uh hopefully next weekend he can get in Hopeful, yeah.
SPEAKER_02My question is, how did Regal scan his ticket? Like no one was paying like they scanned it, like, I'm not dealing with that shit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I bet someone saw it was like, I'm not telling him. Yeah, like oh, too late.
SPEAKER_02He already walked by and it's like, oh And now my question is when he goes in to scan next time, you think it's gonna scan?
SPEAKER_00That's his problem. You know what's not his problem though. Not our problem. Because we saw the movie.
SPEAKER_02We did see the movie.
SPEAKER_00And uh it was a very beautiful film, generally. It uh very shot very well, of course. Uh the what I really loved about this film is his interpretation of the Odyssey because so often we uh when you're watching uh the different interpretations of the Odyssey, you're agreeable with like this fantastical mystical journey of like craziness, intrigue, and like more magical. And this one, it's a lot more like I was telling Christian, it felt like a horror movie when you're going through Odyssey's journeys back home. Oh, yeah. Because it is a horrific, tragic story. Like uh their their time with like polythemis and watching his soldiers getting like eaten and like looking at polythemis and just not like uh oh, that's a dude just with one eye. Like, no, this is like a creature. Uh just a side in the sun, twisted nose, the eye just doesn't look quite right. It just looks off. Like, oh, this is scary.
SPEAKER_02Isn't it interesting they had a practical use for that? They built a giant cyclops for that thing.
SPEAKER_00They built a giant cyclops, of course they did. Yeah, no one hates CGI. I'll show you. I'll pull it up for you while you keep talking. Yeah, no, uh, that whole scene, like every every moment that we are with uh Odysseus and his crew in that journey is so slick.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they made a 60-foot puppet. Sorry to interrupt you. Uh they made a 60-foot puppet for it. Here's the image. Wow. They use wires and everything to move it around.
SPEAKER_00That's actually pretty impressive. No, um, that's really cool. Like that part was great. Uh, the part with like Cersei and then turning them into pigs.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, my immediate first thought was like, oh shit, spirited away.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I didn't know that's where I'm assuming that's where Spirited Away got it from. But I don't know. Or it's another Asian um uh goddess or god that does that to someone. But my first immediate thought was, oh, spirited away.
SPEAKER_00Uh when you said spirited away, I was surprised you even seen it. What? You don't look like a studio Ghibli kind of guy.
SPEAKER_02I like movies. I don't like I don't watch anime TV shows, I watch anime movies. Princess Mononoka is one of my favorite movies ever.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's thoroughly surprising. Did not know you partook in Panyo? Studio Ghibli film.
SPEAKER_02The Boy and the Heron?
SPEAKER_00Oh, the Boy and the Heron. It's great. Rob Pence. You wouldn't know because he changes.
SPEAKER_02He just threw it a squawk the whole time, basically.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was very cool.
SPEAKER_02Um House Moving Castle? Yeah. They're bringing Akira back to theaters. I'm gonna go see it. I'm very excited for that shit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm very I like Studio Ghibli films. But uh yeah, the the part with Cersei where she's like manually like morphing these the men into pigs and stuff. It was it was so like horrific and like scared, like oh shit, like this is very tactile.
SPEAKER_02You could feel it. Like my brother had to turn away at one point, like when she shoved her hand down the throat. Because it was different than like normal magic in movies where it's like poof, they're there. It felt like despite the fact that you're turning a dude into a literal pig, it felt grounded somehow and real. Which did that that work for you for most of this movie? Like the fact that despite there being a cyclops and monsters and a whatever the hell that was between the pathway between the two uh in the ocean between the two path uh things uh Scylla and Charybdis.
SPEAKER_00That's what that's what that was. Yeah, Charybdis is um the thing that like grabbed the soldiers and Scylla is um a another like siren, but like a bigger one.
SPEAKER_02Okay. When I was watching, I was like, despite the fact that these are giant monsters, it felt real, like this somehow existed. It also looked like those were like wasp nests the way you know what I'm talking about? Like it looked weird. It was very interesting to look at. No, um so did you like the realism the realism they use in the movie, or do would you have preferred a more magic element added? Now I I like the fact that it felt grounded, but did you want more magic added to that groundedness, or would you have preferred it been more like mythical and make-belief?
SPEAKER_00Uh at first, yes. At first I was like, oh man, I was waiting for Polytheemus to be like uh talking to other giants. Like, who stabs you? Which one's polytheemus again? The the oh Cyclops. Thank you. Yeah, who stabs you? Nobody. Because the the whole little trick that uh Odysseus does to like escape, they do the the sheep thing and they also like who hurt you, nobody, so they wouldn't know that they were there. And I was like, oh man, I was hoping to see that. But the more that I I watched the film, I was like, oh, that just wouldn't have worked in this film. He wants this to be a more like grounded uh almost if the Odyssey was a real story in a sense, like a true story. Because uh another thing that like I thought was uh very fascinating is um they talk about the gods, but the gods are so uh vacant within the film. Like outside of Athena, you don't really see my my thing of like the the my favorite part about the end of the film is we when he's going through when they realize that like they are the the monsters at sea, when they find that out and like he's recounting the tragedy to Troy, he sees uh Zendaya's character as they're about to execute her, and that uh uh smash cut to like the Athena's statue head rolling down the thing and killing her. I don't believe that like that is like actually Athena. I think that is like Odysseus's like um mind.
SPEAKER_02Manifestation of Athena.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like he's like trying to come to terms with like the horrors that they committed in Troy. He realizes that like I brought on the end of Civilization of Man because I violated Zeus's law. Uh and I I've uh Yeah, I he I can't think of the word that I wanted to use. But um he bastardizes the Zeus's law is what a uh a good uh word that I want to use. Um and I I think that is done purposefully because throughout the film we get uh you treat beggars because in all Greek mythology uh you treat the lowest uh people in society the best because they could be gods in disguise. And it's just a nice rule of treat unto others as you do unto them, because that's Zeus's law. So you feed the beggars you because you never know that could be a god, and if you treat them wrong, they'll scorn you, curse you, kill you, even. And every moment we get like, are you a god? No. And you never really see them. You see Poseidon, like, oh, Poseidon's like angry, they're bad at sea, Zeus's wrath. You get a storm.
SPEAKER_02You don't physically see a human, but you see the effects of what the gods or what they interpret the gods to be displaying anger towards them.
SPEAKER_00And I I really loved this this version of the Odyssey.
SPEAKER_02Which I really like that aspect because that stems from like people in the 1800s and way back, like they believed they were the gods were present because of like the way the nature would react. And not showing a physical person is a great idea for that because you can have it be like it also makes you question whether the gods are really there or not to a degree. Now we saw Cyclops, so Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's like little elements where you're like, fuck, they're probably there. But in that sense, like the gods don't have to theoretically exist.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they they never physically manifest it even only he saw Athena. Nobody else was here.
SPEAKER_02And we only saw a few real elements of magic with the Sisyphus. Is that the the person who permit people to pick? What was that person's name again? Oh, Cersei. Cersei, sorry.
SPEAKER_00Sisyphus pushes a rock up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I yeah, I know that. I got the S's confused. We don't really see any magic elements besides that one moment and the Cyclops, really. Yeah. And Calypso with the Lotus Flower. But that was a little again kind of great. You don't really see Calypso do anything. You just hand her the she just hands the flower over.
SPEAKER_00And I don't know. I I just really love the that like realness aspect of this like so magical scene.
SPEAKER_02Side note, the only reason I know what the Lotus Flower is is because of Percy Jackson.
SPEAKER_00That's fair.
SPEAKER_02I mean because they have that really that Lotus Flower scene in that in the Vegas part. Yeah, it's not.
SPEAKER_00I'm not gonna hold you. Like while watching the Odyssey, a part of my brain legit could not turn off like the Hades in my brain, because the Hades video game about Supergiant Games, I've told you about it. Umades 1 and 2, the second one, it has uh Odysseus, Polythemus, skilling Charybdis as like bosses you fight. And so the entire time I'm sitting here, I'm just like in my brain doing a run of Hades in my head. I'm just like, oh wow, like oh it's Charibdis, it's Polythemus. Like, where's the cool flute solo and like Polythemus using a shepherd's staff as a toothpick? And uh that's just a little fun thing. So I'm not gonna follow you on like oh yeah, Percy Jackson and like the the Lotus Flowers.
SPEAKER_02The only way I'm gonna relate to the C because I don't know, I don't have any background with Greek mythology that much.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it would be it's just like ow, I love Hades and I know all these characters, and it's uh it's fun.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's fair. Now, if you had to uh give a definitive answer, who was your favorite performance in the movie?
SPEAKER_00Ooh, favorite performance.
SPEAKER_02You didn't think about one beforehand?
SPEAKER_00No, I mean like I thought This is why we review the doc. No, I I thought about it, but it's just like when like I everybody's like really good.
SPEAKER_02We talked about our favorite moment, but I'm talking about overall performance.
SPEAKER_00They uh I think Tom Holland did like a fantastic performance, Telimukus.
SPEAKER_02Which is really funny because it's very split. Some people think it's a great performance by Tom, but some people are calling it awful. Like they're saying he's the weakest part of the film. I'm not agreeing with that take, but I'm saying there have been some reviewers that have said that. Like as far as the movie goes, they loved it. As far as performances go, that was the weakest one. I don't personally think that. I think this is the best work Tom's ever done in a movie. Yes. Now, granted, I'm comparing a great film to he's mainly done shit outside of the Spider-Man movies.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But he's not a horrible actor, and this he really no one brings out the best in him.
SPEAKER_00No, yeah. And it's similar, but like different from like the roles that he's played.
SPEAKER_02I mean, he's the casting of is very yeah, yeah. The casting is very on hand, like no one's doing it on purpose. He he's a boy in Spider-Man movies, and he's playing this boy here who is his mother, even doesn't think it's good enough for shit. Yeah. Which is very interesting.
SPEAKER_00And he is he's a child, he's never known his father.
SPEAKER_02And Tom was saying this is his last chance to be in this kind of role, too. He's he's aged, he's officially aged out of playing the kid in movies.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and he's he's he's playing more like adult roles. No, um, I I think I'd probably have to give it to maybe Tom. I'm giving it to Robert Pattinson personally. Robert Pattinson was really good too.
SPEAKER_02Like just the way he just like because when I was first watching the movie, because I didn't know their names, I was just thinking to myself, okay, Robert Pattinson right there. Clips uh Charlie's Throne right there and Zendaya. But then as I watched it, you like you could see like because these are such famous people, you see that shell go away. Like you I no longer saw Robert. I was seeing his character in the moment, and just watching him, you could see all the little things. He was such a little bitch. He kept like telling me go fight, go do all this. He was never willing to go in and fight, and you could see that even when he was a kid, because he passed off. I just thought it was really interesting watching that character be on such a high and mighty horse around Tom, but then in the moment he just acts like a little bitch. Yeah, no, uh and I thought he played that really I think Robert is just such so talented, and just watching him evolve since Twilight has been so interesting.
SPEAKER_00He knows when to be big within a scene and when to shrink. Yes. He he's big, overbearing uh when him and Tom Holland share the screen.
SPEAKER_02Yes. But like when you have that when he's talking with Damon Odysseus, he kind of shrivels up a little bit, especially when he learns that it is Odysseus. Yeah, like it's like, oh, uh-oh. And because he can he can tell the truth of what happened. He can take me off this pedestal that everyone holds me on. Because I tell the story about how I tried to go, but uh I tried to volunteer. But you know, your dad wanted me to stay and protect you. Yeah, by that I'm gonna beat the shit out of you all the time, apparently.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm uh trying to kill you. Um no. The performance was great. Um, Elliot Page, the five minutes that he's in the film.
SPEAKER_02Opening scene I thought was fine, but that scene we talked about it already, but I think the Hades part was phenomenal.
SPEAKER_00Re really great.
SPEAKER_02Really great. That like uh I don't know, there's just so many like small like moments. Very in there, yeah, there really is just so many small look great performances here and there throughout the film because it's just every character is cast so well. Yes, like you're using the best actors in the world for this movie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh I would have loved to see more of a Lupe as like Helena.
SPEAKER_02I'd like to see Did you like the fact that they you in in the in the Odyssey? Are they twins? Helena Troy and her sister? I believe so. I don't remember. I don't I don't remember the I was gonna ask, do you like the fact they used her for both roles? Or do you wish that it was like a different sister or something like that?
SPEAKER_00Like it I I'm fine with that.
SPEAKER_02It makes sense to me. Um special special shout out though. My I don't think he was the best performance movie. I had the most fun with it. John Burnthal.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Just love anytime John Burnthal's in a movie. No, uh He's great. Anytime any five, like the it's almost like Wolf Wall Street, the amount he's used in this is perfect. Because John Burnthal can suck a lot of energy out of a room because of how big he is sometimes, and I thought his use in this movie was perfect because they don't overuse him.
SPEAKER_00No. He was probably like my least favorite part, but like not in a sense of like it was awful. It was just more of a eh, like it's it's more John Bernthal.
SPEAKER_02And I like that when John Bernthal was telling what happened to Odysseus, you saw the Battle of Troy. Like you got all these different perspectives of all that going on, and it made sense to have the John Bernthal style character, just in general, John Bernthal play that part.
SPEAKER_00You want a brute, you get John Bernthal. He he plays a perfect brute. And now let me tell you something. I I love that. And yeah, I mean, you want his story about Odysseus, and I I I I love John Burnthal. It's not a good thing. I just think he's great. No, uh I love him in The Punisher. So um Wayne Jenkins. Yeah. Uh no, so that would be like if I had if I had to pick like a the worst performance, it's not even that bad.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I I don't think I maybe Hymish Patel. He didn't really stick out to me that much.
SPEAKER_00I loved him. What?
SPEAKER_02I no, I'm not saying worst or best. Yeah, I know, I know. Similar take as like John Byrne, though. Every time he talked, I just didn't care as much in that sense of like his character didn't interest me as much. One thing I did find interesting, though, was the fact that it looked like Odysseus saved, or maybe I'm reversing this. One of the two saved each other at the Battle of Troy, and then they had all this animosity towards each other throughout the entire journey back until Hymish died.
SPEAKER_00Uh yes, uh Hymish, he saved him. But it was the animosity was just like his soldiers were losing faith.
SPEAKER_02Well, it was also interesting. You could see Odysseus's hubris play out because he didn't want to follow Agamemnon on their pathway home, and he wanted to take his own, showing like, I'm smart, I know what to do in this situation. And doing so got half of his fucking family or half his crew killed.
SPEAKER_00And that is the the story of the Odyssey, of just like Odysseus thinking he is better and he's got a hubris. Yeah, yeah. And the gods do their best and succeed in like hey, and that's why they punished him because you're not better than us. Like, you don't know Mar, you listen to us, we dictate how things go. And like that is just the the general core of the story about the Odyssey, and I think they catch it. As somebody who's never read it, that's I mean I'm not gonna sit up here and say I've read it from front to back, but I I'm very familiar with the I'm not very familiar, so that's where I'm more meaning coming from my end. No, um what else about the movie?
SPEAKER_02Do we uh we've covered a lot. Yeah. Um favorite moment overall, favorite scene?
SPEAKER_00Uh I touched on it. It was the part was in Dea. Uh when they they show the Odysseus recounts his version of going into Troy.
SPEAKER_02Oh yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_00That was fantastic. But like that was my first favorite scene. The second one was um Odysseus uh completing the challenge and like killing everybody in the world. Oh, you're talking about the ending essentially? Yes. Uh I love that. My the the Go ahead um what's the the composer? Uh Ludwig Van Gordon. I was just about to get into him.
SPEAKER_02The way the score that I was feeling the tension with the score he put into that scene, like the drums, like the the beat that was going on, I loved it.
SPEAKER_00My the the music like is fantastic. My favorite part is that thwang when he snaps the bone. Yes. Oh my lord.
SPEAKER_02Also, quick quick note, not related to Ludwig. If you have epilepsy, do you plan on seeing this movie? I was having a fucking aneurysm.
SPEAKER_00I was like, oh god, fuck. I was telling Christian, like, you don't have episodes. Like, exactly. I was literally like, oh Jesus Christ, my eyes were hurting.
SPEAKER_03Nolan, give me a warning next time. Wow, that's spiking.
SPEAKER_00You have to give a warning because it was bothering me. So if you do have epilepsy, be warned. There's a section about like a little bit past halfway part in the film.
SPEAKER_02It's like a good three minutes of just flashing lights.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh I mean, I can tell you, it's just you know the story of the Odyssey, and if you don't, I'll tell you what part specifically. There's no such thing as spoiling the Odyssey, it's the Odyssey. Uh when Zeus is punishing uh Odysseus's crew for eating Apollo's cattle. That whole scene where the ship is breaking apart. Um that part, epilepsy warning. Like Jesus.
SPEAKER_02It's like you ever see that episode of uh Pokemon from the 90s or that he heard about the story where they had caused a bunch of kids to have epileptic seizures? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Same vibe. Yeah. Not no red flashing or blue flashing, but a fuck ton of flashing lights.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was bothering me a lot.
SPEAKER_02It's like a Kanye West.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, but no, uh that that that thrum and then him just like it like he he ends the epic with an epic battle. I don't like, oh this shit is great.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And everybody just like, oh wait, you're oh and they start kneeling. Yeah, like as it was going on, they grew they gained respect for him in that moment. Ah shit, he's still him, and it was cool. I love that entire scene. So it was yeah, Zendea's like the the fall of Troy and his recounting and then the thrum and then him just killing all the suitors. What was your favorite part?
SPEAKER_02I would say the ending scene with killing all the suitors as a I wouldn't say it was my favorite part. The part that had me the most shocked was the pig scene. Not in terms of like I had to look away when she shoved her hand down the dude's. I was like, oh my god. It's hard to look at. I just thought, like, interesting wise, that was like very interesting to look at. And also just trying to piece it. Because then I immediately was like, spirited away. I don't know how this happened. I don't know how these are related, but I'm getting spirited away vibes right now. I was just thinking that for the entire 15 minute sequence that was. Um I gotta I think the Battle of Troy itself. Oh, I do have a question for you. They were in that horse for God knows how long. Yes. How long do you think you're surviving to that thing? Uh because there's piss shit, it's filled with water, there's dead bodies in it.
SPEAKER_00Uh I I either disassociate and survive, or somebody's gonna have to kill me in that damn horse because that is miserable.
SPEAKER_02Um it's gotta smell awful in that thing. Yeah. That might be top ten worst human experiences of all time.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, gotta be. No, um, yeah, the the whole Troy scene was also really great, too. I just I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Speaking of Troy, are you uh did you know that Nolan was originally associated to direct Troy before it went to Wolfgang Peterson? I did not know that. Yeah, um, it was before he was attached to Batman. He had the chance. If he does Batman, or if he does Troy, he's not gonna be able to Yeah, we're not getting Batman. So it's he's wanted to make a movie like this for a long time. And it's really interesting to see him finally get to make the movie he's wanted to make. I just think that's really interesting. But if you had to replace the director, like if it's not Nolan, who else would you have direct a movie like this? On that same grand scale, I'd have There's not many directors working today that work with budgets as big as they are. Like 250, 250 million was the cost of the actual movie to make it. I'd have to maybe Villeneuve?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's what I was gonna say.
SPEAKER_02PTA?
SPEAKER_00Nah.
SPEAKER_02I think this is I I I'm just saying he could make the movie. I don't think he should make the movie, but as far as like getting that kind of budget, I he's one of the few directors I think.
SPEAKER_00He can probably like handle the budget in like all the time.
SPEAKER_02Maybe not hand. I more mean like studios being comfortable to hand the directors. That's what I'm talking about. What there's not many directors working today that a studio is gonna hand this movie to not handing this movie to a first time filmmaker.
SPEAKER_00No, it's just too big. Um cost too much. I think they would hand a section of the movie to uh first timer. Like if somebody wanted to tell the story of like have a longer story about the soldiers with uh Cersei, I think you could give that to somebody because that is a very um because the the story with Cersei herself is such a really uh tragic and like uh a good reflection of Odysseus and his soldiers and like men and their relationships with uh women and how they are seen. Because they think they're following Zeus's law when they come in, but like you can't really tell a soldier no when it's a bunch of them with their weapons. Like you're kind of forced that hospitality. It's a it's an inferred hospital, you know? It's like you can't do anything about it. It's implied. Yes, yes. It's um it's Sunday in Philadelphia. Yeah, yeah. It's implied. Yeah, yeah. Um thank god, I'm happy you got that reference. Yeah. Uh and I I think you you'd be able to tell a really cool, unique little story. Story of just like following Cersei and seeing all the other pe all the other men visit her island and her changing them into animals. And then when Odyssey shows up, we get that like interesting conversation about like uh the trauma that men put on women and things like that. I think that would you could tell somebody could tell that chunk of the story. Yeah, I think it'd be cool. Um I think that's what's so cool about the Odyssey also. There are just so many really cool like moments moments in this.
SPEAKER_02Because it a movie plays like a book, honestly. Yeah. The way it's like broken up into chapters, and there's some chapters you may not like as others as much as others, but there's some you want to spend more time with.
SPEAKER_00Exactly.
SPEAKER_02There's also moments that you may not love as much as other moments, but as holistically as the pure book goes over, it's a fantastic movie. Like I said, I was about 8.5 to 8.8 range. You know. Um But just to wrap things up, because we're coming to an end here. Um, this movie, along with a few other we're halfway through 2026 or over halfway through. It's the biggest movie of the year. Where do you think it's gonna stack up come award times? How many nominations do you think it'll grab? Do you think what what nominations do you think it's gonna get? How many like what actors were gonna get noms?
SPEAKER_00I there's just no way that Matt Damon doesn't get a nod.
SPEAKER_02He's this would be his fourth best actor nomination, I believe. I think he He lost for the Martian. He I don't know if he was nominated for Goodwill Hunting. I know he's nominated for the Martian, though.
SPEAKER_00I think Ann Hathaway, uh best uh she's the lead female. Yeah. Right? Yeah. So yeah, I think her performance is fantastic. Uh I think Robert Patterson can get a nod for best supporting.
SPEAKER_02I think he deserves a best supporting nod for sure.
SPEAKER_00I mean, between him and uh Tom. I don't know if I don't know if this performance itself will get Tom a nod, but I don't think it will. I think it would start a conversation.
SPEAKER_02I think it might start a conversation. I just don't think it's gonna it's so different than what Tom's done that they might the Academy might similar to what kind of not to the same degree, and I'm making this comparison just for uh the actor's name. Similar to like kind of Michael B. Jordan getting nominated for best actor. Yeah. It's because this is a movie he doesn't usually make, and this is probably maybe his only time to be nominated because Michael B. Jordan doesn't really make Oscar type movies that get these big allocations or nominations. I think this might be Tom's real only shot, so they could see them doing that for that to be recognized, just to have that on his resume. We're not gonna give it to you for the win. Almost similar to like Marty Supreme, like they're like they're probably gonna give it to an older actor who's more established, who's served his time, paid his dues to the academy, and give it to them. But I think he maybe gets a nod.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no.
SPEAKER_02But I think um best actor is probably gonna come down to we haven't seen the movie, obviously, but I would say nominations right now are Ryan Gossing and Hail Mary, Odysseus, Matt Damon, and probably Tom Cruise's digger is gonna be talked about theoretically for the nomination.
SPEAKER_00Uh I mean I I'm I'm really waiting for Dune. I I think um Yeah, I know this is just precursor to because that hasn't come out yet. Yeah. Um for the year. I think Dune is going to be up there. I do think Hans Zimmerman's score might beat out uh Ludwig's for uh Odyssey. I don't know the the the music in Dune is I don't know, it's so good.
SPEAKER_02I could see them doing that purely because didn't Ludwig win last year?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for centers.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so I I could see them being like, yeah, he won last year, we're gonna give it to someone else. Now with Nolan Best Picture, I don't know. Dune three maybe, but I don't know a movie this year that has been like holistically better. Like I personally like the invite more, but that's not the question here. We're talking about the Oscars. I don't know of a movie that's gonna be more Oscar-y than this one, but they he won two years for his last movie, so I don't know if they're gonna be willing to give him back-to-back Oscars.
SPEAKER_00I think I think you can argue because this is one, this is shot entirely in IMAX.
SPEAKER_02Built the housing, like you could see I could see them giving the nod because it's inventive.
SPEAKER_00Like the the amount of effort and like control and creative creative process that it takes to execute a movie like this, nobody's doing this besides him. And I I think that alone is enough to get him like the Oscar not.
SPEAKER_02I'm not talking about I think I guarantee you to win. Okay, that makes sense. Because no matter what he's getting nominated, there's not a sit there's not a situation. No, I I think or a or a timeline where this movie does not get nominated for Best Picture.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then the the combination of also using just like real settings is Lack of CGI.
SPEAKER_02I mean, obviously there's some I don't know if there is any CGI.
SPEAKER_00I don't know how they they made the Yeah, I don't like I I like thinking back looking at this movie, it's just so so beautifully in handcrafted uhly made. I loved it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, someone I didn't mention that I I wanted to touch on as far as performance goes, uh favorite ones, John Legwasamos. He was great in this movie. He was the blind guy.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_02John Legwizamos is a is a very underrated actor. He's in a lot of things. People have seen him in everything, but he's never really talked about. I think he gave a great performance in this movie. He was fantastic. He's a real that guy, not a lot of people know his name, but when you see him in a movie, you're like, oh, it's that guy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And he's a good actor because he's in so many things that like people genuinely love. But I just thought his performance deserved to be a little bit recognized in this. I think he did a great job.
SPEAKER_00He was fantastic. Every every part he was every time he was in the scene, it was like, oh yeah, like you loved him. It felt like your your granddad almost.
SPEAKER_02Yes, it did. Uh my my last favorite part of the movie, I would probably say, is when Odysseus finally gets home, and then the dog that's been sitting there waiting for him to return. Yeah, he finally sees his owner and he greets him and he I think passes away. He was holding on, waiting for the his person who saved his life, yeah, essentially, to come back home. And that scene was really beautiful, I thought. I it almost brought a tear to my eye. I'm not a huge dog person, but I like I have a cat, but yeah, just that animalistic bond that it had, and then he when that also moment is the moment that uh Tom Holland's character recognizes his dad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because he was like my dad, the dog's waiting for my dad. Yeah, like oh sh. He's like, Shh, I don't know, I love that.
SPEAKER_02I just thought that was probably like the best moment, like pure, just heartwarming moment. Yes. It just almost brought a tear to my eye. I thought it was beautiful.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02No, um it's also Paul's favorite moment. It's a good moment. He's a big dog guy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But yeah, no, that those are our thoughts on the Odyssey.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, any final things we need to talk about? I'm blanking right now. Uh I'm checking the doc.
SPEAKER_00No. Oh, there's like one thing. Um TV show related. They wrapped up uh filming for season three of Daredevil, Born Again. So that's gonna come out March of next year. That's about it. Maxim just saw that.
SPEAKER_02Other things Maxim Pleasure Guaranteed finished.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02Uh can I talk? Uh you're probably gonna make a video.
SPEAKER_00I'm probably gonna make like a little bit. Can I say something about that? I didn't love the ending.
SPEAKER_02Like the last episode itself felt really rushed.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes, yes. That's what I mean. Like it felt like it was like everything wrapped up really quickly.
SPEAKER_02A lot of it's also setting up a season two, but it wrapped up really quickly. A lot of unnecessary shit happened that didn't need to happen in that show. What was the point of the the one guy? I'm blanking the older guy, the one that gets killed, like she shot in the face, right? What was the point of him? I know he mistakenly attacks the one girl and puts her in the hospital. Yeah, we nothing comes of that though. There's not like some other story police investigated, nobody finds out who assaulted it. Yeah, but like it almost felt pointless. Like the entire story moves the exact same if that girl never gets assaulted. And then I just thought the cop getting shot one was stupid. Yeah. I don't understand how he possibly gets shot in that situation. She was turned around. And you have a gun on her. He was in the moment like this. You can't really be. I mean, if she whips around and shoots.
SPEAKER_03By the way, that what that means, real quick, is that she did a 180 no scope with a sniper in fucking. No, she had a handgun. Where'd she have the handgun?
SPEAKER_00She had a handgun in like in the game. I didn't notice the handgun. All I knew about was the sniper at that stuff. No, no, no, no, no. She has she had a handgun, so she probably like still still though, I mean, like it's still stupid. You still turn around really quickly. Most modern-day cops are shooting you if you turn around too quickly.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they are. Yeah, that that is um I also not to shit on the maid cop girl. I don't love her. I hate her so much. Hate her character. I don't like the actress.
SPEAKER_00Very I don't know, very incompetent in a sense.
SPEAKER_02And then the ending scene, like it was clearly forcing a season two. Yeah. When the show doesn't really need a season two, I was kind of fine with it just being a one-season like murder mystery, just exonerating the mom show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm yeah, I was fine with that. Uh, I'm sort of interested in like seeing like all the characters, like they wrapped up a story and they're like branching out like uh what's the name? He's taking the L set. Uh she's going to complete her story that she was writing.
SPEAKER_02Because she's like, Yeah, I thought it was fine. I think it should have just wrapped up and been a one-season show. Yeah. Personally, I don't think it should have been. Well GZ.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02I I just think it should have been a a one-season mini-series on Apple TV. I don't really see like going with the season two, this show can't go on very far. There's not much story to tell with these characters. Yeah, no. Um, yeah.
SPEAKER_00We'll see. We'll see if it gets renewed. It hasn't been yet.
SPEAKER_02It hasn't been. But yeah. Um final thoughts?
SPEAKER_00No. Um, that's that. We're gonna use these. Yes, our main camera just turned off. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But, you know, if you like this episode, tell everyone you know. Yeah. Like, follow, subscribe, hit us up on Instagram, TikTok, Twitter that we don't use. We have one post on there. Probably should probably use it, but we don't do. We have threads, we use threads pretty weak. Uh YouTube Shorts, um, if you're awesome, this obviously you're already on YouTube. Or you may be on Apple Podcasts or Spotify where our videos are now posted.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So uh yeah. Thank you all for watching.
SPEAKER_02Wait, real quick, do we have any do we have any fan questions? This week. You check the mail back.
SPEAKER_00Uh no, nobody sent me any questions just yet.
SPEAKER_02Well, goddammit, Devontae. Then I'll ask you this question. Yes. Just one quick question. If going back to the fact that Nolan almost directed it, would you have rather seen Nolan make a full story about the movie about Troy? Or are you happy with getting the Odyssey from the Odyssey? Do you think he would have made a great Troy movie?
SPEAKER_00I think he would have made a fantastic Troy movie.
SPEAKER_02Do you think Nolan at the time in 2004 could have made a good Troy movie?
SPEAKER_00No, not with uh the technology that he has now. I don't think like if you were to put Troy, if you would have gave the technology that we have right now and the advances in IMAX and all that with Troy, I think you could argue, but I think Odyssey is just probably his gonna be the better.
SPEAKER_02You know one problem I kind of had though with the IMAX cameras, and it's not like a real it's a nitpicky thing. Yeah, I didn't love especially this was mainly in the early part, didn't happen later on. But when they were having conversations, it's cutting between like it's just going back and forth between the two face shots. I it just was going really fast because obviously you can't leave the camera running that long. Yeah, and it was just very jarring for me at the beginning. It it only happens for like the first like five minutes where they're cutting back and forth. It just caught me off guard. Maybe it is uh maybe because I knew that this the takes, I think going in because I knew the takes can only be two and a half minutes. That's how long an IMAX camera can run. Yeah. So knowing that, I just every time I was like, oh, they had to cut, they had to cut, because the camera can't do it long enough. That's just what I was thinking. That's again more of a nitpicky thing, not an actual critique of the movie. That's just what I thought, like, this is a little bit jarring for me. But no, yeah. Um yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's the question. Uh if you have any thoughts, feel free to leave them down below. If you have any questions, feel free to send them to us. Uh, we do check our mailbag all the time. But yeah, follow us on all our socials. Uh sorry about the tangent literally everywhere.
SPEAKER_02Uh sorry about the tangent at gmail.com as well. Uh if you if you go on TikTok, you can also just look up tangent.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And you'll see us.
SPEAKER_02Because that's the name on the account as well as the app.
SPEAKER_00But thank you all for watching.
SPEAKER_02And thank you, David.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, have a good one.
