Welcome to study four of the Gideon Fleece model. This is our final session in the series, and in this study, we move into the practical application of everything we've explored so far. Remember, in our last study, we focused on the call of Gideon. We looked at where God found him and what that revealed about operating under fear. We also unpacked the dialogue between God and Gideon and saw how easy it can be to mishear, to doubt, or hesitate even when God has clearly spoken. Now we come to the fleece itself. And in this study, we're going to look at three key areas. First, we'll look at when and why we may need an unmistakable answer from God. Second, we'll look at the posture required to seek that kind of clarity and what it means to come to the threshing floor with openness and honesty before the Lord. Then finally, we'll move into the practical side and look at how to build and apply a modern-day Gideon fleece in a way that is clear, specific, and more importantly, aligned with God's will. So to the word of God, we're going to be looking at Judges chapter 6, verses 36 to 40, and I'm reading from the New Living Translation that says, Then Gideon said to God, If you are truly going to use me to rescue Israel as you promised, prove it to me in this way. I will put a wool fleece on the threshing floor tonight. If the fleece is wet with dew in the morning, but the ground is dry, then I will know that you are going to help me rescue Israel as you promised. And that is just what happened. When Gideon got up early the next morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung out a whole bowl full of water. Then Gideon said to God, Please don't be angry with me, but let me make one more request. Let me use the fleece for one more test. This time, let the fleece remain dry while the ground around it is wet with dew. So that night God did as Gideon asked. The fleece was dry in the morning, but the ground was covered with dew. So let's take a look at a foundational principle concerning the Gideon fleece. Because there are times when the stakes are high, and these can be about decisions that affect our future, our family, our direction, our calling. There can be times when the consequences are significant and are not easily reversed. These are the times when the uncertainty carries a lot of risk, and moving in the wrong direction could cost us time, energy, opportunity, resource, even regret. And because of that, it's in these moments that gut instinct or intuition are not enough. You see, we're not looking for vague impressions. We need clarity. We need direction that we can recognize with confidence. And this is where Gideon's fleece becomes relevant. But there is a condition. Before we ask God for clarity, we must be willing to come before Him openly and honestly. So it's therefore helpful to understand the process we're about to walk through. And there are a few things that we need to think about when we want to seek clear direction from God. First, we need to establish the right posture. This is when we come before God openly and honestly, willing to hear him without holding on to our own preferred outcome. Second, we bring our request to him clearly. This means that we are specific about what we're asking for and intentional in how we seek him. Third, we position ourselves to recognize his answer. And this is where the principle of the fleece becomes practical, creating a clear and measurable way to discern his direction. And finally, we respond. Once God makes the decision clear, the responsibility shifts to us to act. So everything begins with posture. So let's break down these steps in a little bit more detail. And the first step in the process is the posture. Now this is where the principle of the threshing floor becomes essential. Remember, the threshing floor is the place of separation. It's where what is true is separated from what is not, and it's also where things are exposed, processed, and made clear. In other words, this means we come before God and allow him to deal with anything in us that could distort how we hear him. This includes bias, unhealthy motives, fear, pride, and any predecided outcomes we may hold within us. You see, we can't come asking God for direction while holding on to the answer that we want. And there's a really clear example of this found in the book of Jeremiah chapter 42, verses 19 to 21. And we see that the people came to the prophet Jeremiah and asked him to seek God on their behalf. They said they wanted to know what God was saying, and they declared that they would obey whatever the Lord told them. But in reality, they had already made up their minds to return to Egypt. God spoke clearly through Jeremiah and warned them not to go. Yet when the answer came, they rejected it because it didn't align with what they had already chosen. In this case, they appeared to be seeking God, but they were not open to his direction. And this is a warning for us. You see, it's possible to ask God for clarity while still holding on to the answers we want to hear. But if we want clear direction, we must come before God with genuine openness. This means being willing to accept his answer even if it's not what we expected. The threshing floor is therefore not just a concept, it's a posture. It's the place where we intentionally come before God and allow him to deal with anything in us that could distort how we hear him. It's where we become honest about our motives, where we acknowledge our own desires and where we're willing to surrender them all. It's also where we release the desire to control the outcome. That means letting go of our preferred answer and be willing to face any fear about what obedience may require. And from that place we say, Lord, I want your will, not just confirmation of mine. Because until we reach that point, we may still be listening but not be fully open to the response we hope to receive from God. So once we've come to that place of openness, we then bring our request to God. Now the word declares in Philippians chapter 4 and verse 6, and I'm reading from the New King James Version, it says, Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. Notice the structure of that verse. And more importantly, we're told to do this with thanksgiving. And now it's important to note that thanksgiving is not based on the outcome we want, it's based on trusting God's character. It's trusting that He knows what's best for us, even when we don't fully understand. You know, this reminds me of a hymn we used to sing when I was growing up, written by Avis B. Christiansen, called Jesus Understands. And I believe it was written in the early 1930s. And it says in the chorus, Yes, he understands, all his ways are best. Here he calls to you, come to me and rest. Leave the unknown future in the Master's hand. Whether sad or joyful, Jesus understands. And that is the mindset we're called to adopt, so that even as we make our request known, we do so with trust. Trust that God sees what we cannot see, and that his answer, whatever it may be, will be right. So the process is clear. We recognize that we need direction, we come to the threshing floor and allow God to deal with anything in us that could distort our hearing. Then we bring a clear and specific request before Him with trust and thanksgiving. And from this place, we're ready to seek an unmistakable answer from the Lord. So before we go into the step-by-step guide for building a Gideon fleece, I think it's important that we understand the purpose of the fleece, as in why the fleece exists in the first place. Because if we miss the purpose, we can easily misuse the process. Notice in the scripture that we read, Gideon used the fleece to confirm God's instruction, remove uncertainty about his assignment, used it to gain confidence to obey and receive a clear and unmistakable answer. You see, the fleece was not magic, it was a specific and measurable sign that only God could control. Now that same principle still applies today. You know, most of us may not be laying out sheep's wool on the ground, but the need for clarity from God has not changed. There are still moments when we need clarity, direction, confirmation, and peace before acting. And these could be decisions such as should I take this job? Is this the right relationship? Is this the right time to move? Should I start this ministry or this business? Am I hearing God correctly? So a modern-day Gideon fleece is simply a clear and specific condition placed before God that helps us recognize his direction in a way that removes any doubt and confusion. It's not testing God out of unbelief, it's seeking clarity so that we can obey with confidence. So let's look at building a modern-day Gideon fleece. You know, the same principles that Gideon applied in his day still apply today. A fleece must be clear, it must be specific, and it must be something only God can control. So let's walk through how this works in practice. We're going to look at five practical ways in which we can seek clear guidance from God using the Gideon fleece. One way is through the alignment of circumstances, and this is where, like Gideon, we can ask God to arrange events in a specific way that is outside our control. Please note that this is not about trying to force or manipulate the outcome, but it's about simply asking God to open or close a door. For example, you might pray, Lord, if this is your will, let this opportunity open without me pushing for it. So that's the first one, through the alignment of circumstances. Another way is through repeated confirmation from independent sources, and this is where the same message or direction is confirmed through different people or situations without you prompting them. You know, the word declares in 2 Corinthians 13 and verse 1, and I'm reading from the King James Version, it says, In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established. So for example, your prayer might be, Lord, if this is right, let two unrelated people confirm the same direction without me raising it. So that's the second way, through repeated confirmation from independent sources. A third way can be through deep and sustained inner peace. Now, this isn't a passing emotion or a temporary sense of relief. It's not even about it being based on circumstances going well. This is a peace that remains in place, sustained over time, even when you think about the risks involved. Now scripture speaks about this kind of peace in Philippians chapter 4 and verse 7, and I'm reading from the New International Version where it says, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. You see, this peace is different, it doesn't always make sense naturally. It doesn't depend on everything lining up perfectly, but it remains steady even in the face of risk and perceived uncertainty. Now, one prayer you might pray is, Lord, if this decision is from you, let your peace remain in my heart as I continue to think and pray about it. So this is the third way, which is through deep and sustained inner peace. So the fourth way in which we can seek direction from God is through a timed opportunity window. Now, this is where we ask God to act within a specific time frame so that the answer becomes clear and we're not left in ongoing uncertainty. And this is really helpful to avoid being stuck in limbo for a sustained or long period of time. So even if the answer is to wait, we can be confident that God has responded and will make it clear when it's time for us to act. You see, when God is leading, he's able to open the right door at the right time without delay or confusion. So one prayer that you could pray is, Lord, if this is your plan, let the door open before the end of the month. Now, this was actually the Gideon fleece that I used when I was seeking confirmation before stepping out into my own business. And at the time I asked God to let my line manager call me before the end of the month for no apparent reason. Now I knew that this would be significant because it had never happened before. I would typically only speak with her once every two or three months, and there was just seven days left until the end of October 2024. Two days later, after I laid out my Gideon fleece, she called for no apparent reason, and in that moment I knew it was God. And since then, I have seen the favor and blessing of God on my business in ways I can only describe as supernatural even to this day. So a fourth way that we can seek direction is through timed opportunity windows. And finally, a fifth way is through provision appearing supernaturally. Now, this is where we ask God to provide the exact resources needed in a way that we don't have to manipulate, influence, or create ourselves. It could be financial provision, practical support, or the right opportunity. Now, the important thing here is that it comes in a way that clearly points to God's hand at work and our own effort. So, for example, a simple prayer could be: Lord, if I should proceed, please provide the exact amount needed in a way that I don't have to manufacture it or create it. So this is the fifth way in which we can seek direction from God through provision appearing supernaturally. Each of these follows the same principle. The condition is clear, it is measurable, and it's outside of our control. So let's look at how to create a modern day Gideon fleece. And this is about bringing it into A practical structure because this is where so many people get it wrong. Remember, a fleece must be clear, specific, and measurable. Now I'm going to go through a number of steps, seven in total, and it might be useful to have something to take notes on as we go through. Step number one, define the decision clearly. Define the decision clearly. The first step is to be precise about what you need guidance on. If the decision is vague, you may not understand the answer. So remember in Gideon's story, he wanted an answer as to whether or not God really meant to use him to deliver Israel. So instead of saying, God show me what to do with my life, you could narrow it down to the actual decision in front of you. For example, God, should I accept the job offer from Company X? Or you could say, Lord, is this the right time for me to move into this new location? Both of these are clear and they identify the actual issue that you're bringing before God. So step number one, define the decision clearly. Step number two is choose something only God can control. Choose something only God can control. The second step is to avoid conditions that you can manipulate or influence. In other words, the request must be something you cannot bring about yourself. It should require God's intervention, not your own effort. It could be that you've reached a point where you've done all you can and now you're relying on God to move. So for example, a poor fleece would be if everything goes smoothly, then I'll know it's your will. Now that's not reliable because smooth is subjective. You could interpret events in different ways depending on how you feel, and you may end up shaping the outcome to fit what you want. A much stronger fleece would be: if they offer me the role without me negotiating or pushing for it, I will recognize that as your direction. Now, in this last example, the condition is outside of your control, and that is what gives this model its integrity. So step number two, choose something only God can control. Step number three is make the condition specific and obvious. Make the condition specific and obvious. The third step is to make the condition clear enough for you to say yes or no without confusion. Now this is important because if the condition is vague, you may end up interpreting the outcome based on how you feel rather than what actually happened. So the clearer the condition, the easier it is to recognize God's response. So a weak condition could be if it feels like the right opportunity. Now, feelings is too vague because feelings can shift and you might interpret them differently depending on your circumstances or emotion. A strong condition would be if they include relocation support in the offer, I will take that as confirmation. Now this is specific, it's recognizable, and it removes any ambiguity, so you're not left guessing, you're simply recognizing whether the condition has been met or not. So step number three: make the condition specific and obvious. So step number four is decide the time frame. Decide the time frame. You know, a fleece needs a time boundary. Notice that Gideon checked the outcome in the morning. He legged the fleece the night before, and then he checked the outcome in the morning. And this was a clear point of evaluation. And in the same way, you also need a defined time frame so that the process doesn't remain open-ended. And this helps to avoid ongoing uncertainty and prevents you from staying in a place of indecision. It also ensures that you're not revisiting or redefining the outcome based on how things unfold. The time frame might be within 48 hours, before Friday by the end of the year, or before a specific deadline. The key is that it's agreed before you begin so that you don't keep moving the goalposts afterwards. So my prayer was Lord, if I'm to step out into my own business, cause my line manager to call me for no apparent reason before the end of October. So that was a very specific timeline. So step number four, decide the time frame. Step number five is ask in prayer, patiently and respectfully. Ask in prayer, patiently and respectfully. Once everything is clear, you bring your request to God. You do this patiently, respectfully, and with trust. A helpful structure is first, affirm your trust in God and his will for your life. Second, clearly state the sign you're asking him for. Third, make it clear that you're willing to obey once he responds. So for example, you could pray, Lord, I believe you guide my steps and that you know what is best for me. If this opportunity is from you, let the offer be confirmed by Friday without me chasing them. If that happens, I will move forward with confidence. This is a clear and simple prayer. It expresses trust, states the condition, and shows willingness to obey. Number six is wait without forcing the outcome. Wait without forcing the outcome. Now this is critical. Once you've placed your request before God, you step back. You don't push people, you don't push situations, you don't try to manipulate events, and you certainly don't create the sign yourself. Instead, allow God to respond. This is where trust is tested because it requires patience and restraint. And finally, step number seven is accept the result honestly. Accept the result honestly. Finally, you accept the result honestly. If the condition happens, you move forward. If it doesn't, you take time to reconsider or reflect. So in my case, I asked for a specific response, and I got a very, very specific response. It was exactly what I asked God for. Now I knew I had to step out. Sometimes, as we saw in Gideon's case, he wants to test it again, and you know there's nothing wrong with that. But what we shouldn't do is keep going back and trying to manipulate the answers so that it finally, in our minds, confirms what we want. So by faith, I stepped out in that January, knowing that I'd heard from the Lord and that he was going to guide me. So we need to accept the results, whether God says yes, whether God says no, or whether God says wait. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that if we come before the Lord and we are specific and we ask him, he will by all means respond to our call. So let's bring it all together with a full example. So suppose the decision is should I relocate for this job? Your fleece request could sound like this. Now this is clear, it's measurable, it's time-bound, and it gives a practical framework for recognizing God's direction without confusion. So, in closing, let me remind you that Gideon didn't want his own way. He wanted clarity so that he could move forward in confidence, having the courage to obey. And this is what lies at the core of this study. When our desire is truly to follow God's direction, we can come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help us in time of need, according to Hebrews 4 and verse 16. So let me leave you with this question. What decision are you currently facing that requires an unmistakable answer from God? Why not bring it to the threshing floor? Ask the Lord to deal with anything in you that could distort your hearing. Then bring your request before Him clearly, specifically, and with thanksgiving. Trust in His character, His wisdom, and being confident in knowing that He knows what is best for you. So thank you for staying with me through this study and through the whole Gideon Fleece series. My prayer is that this has not only helped you understand Gideon's story more deeply, but that it has given you a practical way, a set of skills and tools that you can use to seek God's direction with sincerity, with wisdom, and with confidence. May God bless you as you continue your walk with Him.
