Reports suggest the next high-end Apple headset has slipped well into the future, while attention shifts toward lighter glasses and ambient spatial tech. So the dream did not die, it changed shape. That is the key reframe. The old plan was to seal one person inside a screen. And the new plan? Put the illusion into the room. So your bare eyes and bare hands do the believing.

Right, which means we have three problems. Make it look real. Make it feel real. Let you move through it. Sight, touch, space. Sight, touch, space. And honestly, sight feels like the easy one. Hold that confidence. It does not survive the next block. It never does. Quick question before we dive. Why is it always Star Trek? Why that one room? Because Star Trek made the holodeck feel domestic. Not a weapon. A place you visit on your lunch break. A magic room for off-duty space employees. The most relatable science fiction ever written.

That is the whole episode in one sentence. Let's start with sight. The hardest part is getting rid of the headset. So how do you make a 3D thing float in the air with no glasses? You stop showing a flat picture and start projecting actual light into space. Give me the version without the lab coat. Fair. A normal screen sends light in roughly one direction, towards your eyes. Flat.

The brain stops filing complaints. So it behaves like a real object, not a photograph of one. A company called Lightfield Lab builds modular panels for exactly this, projecting imagery that escapes the screen. How sharp are we talking? Their solid light panels are described at around 10 billion pixels per square meter. 10 billion per square meter. At that density, the eye struggles to separate synthetic light from real light.

In principle, though, staring into 10 billion pixels is the holodeck equivalent of pressing your nose to the TV. Somebody once warned humans about exactly this. Sound advice. Even about holograms. But wait. A glowing object floating in a room is impressive. And still not a holodeck. Correct. A hologram you can see is a sculpture. A holodeck is a place. So what is missing? Two things. You cannot touch it, and you cannot walk into it. Then let me reach out and touch the fake. That is exactly the next problem. And it is stranger than the light. No fact check, no grown-ups.

And I am the physics that has to clean up after you. Computer, build me a world. It heard you. It is also slightly afraid of you. Computer. A Roman ruin in the rain at dusk. And in real systems, this is plausible now. AI world models can generate interactive scenes from a single prompt. It built it! Lucy, I am standing in a ruin. You are standing in a gray room being very imaginative.

You may have the ruin. But wait, so in a sense, I could create anything I want, right? In principle, within what the system can render. In practice, the further you stray, the more it wobbles. So I could ask the computer to build a whole fantasy world. Define whole.

Legally distinct dragons. Many of them. And here is the honest part. A world model can sketch the dragon, the sky, the castle. Holding it stable while you fly around for an hour is much harder. Okay, then recreate Pandora from Avatar. The floating mountains, the glowing forest. That one is interesting because Pandora was already built by artists frame by frame. Speaking of which, dear listeners, we are visiting Pandora properly in episode 31. A whole episode in that world, mark it. But back to my gray room. So the AI has a target to imitate. Right. The closer your request is to something already imagined in detail, the better the room can fake it.

I would keep the smug speeches. I never doubted it. Hold that thought, by the way. We are coming back to the Matrix later.

But seriously, if the room makes whatever I ask, do I ever learn to want better things or just louder ones? That is a sharper question than the dragons deserved. I contain range. You contain range, dragons, and a glowing forest. Computer! One more world! The server just sighed.

So the room looks real. Now the harder lies.

If your hand passes through the holographic sword, the whole illusion dies in an instant. So how do you touch light? You do not. You touch sound. That sounds fake. Is it fake? It is real. Arrays of tiny ultrasonic speakers fire focused sound waves at your skin, and the air pressure becomes a shape you can feel. A wall made of noise. NTT and the University of Tokyo recently improved this, focusing ultrasound on the skin and layering specific vibration frequencies for richer feeling. So not just a tickle on the fingertips. They describe texture and deeper pressure, not only a faint breeze. So a person could drag a hand across empty air and feel a rough wooden table. That is the goal. Okay, that is slightly haunted. Good instinct to have. I like to flag the ghost content early.

So sight is photons, touch is pressure waves. And the third wall is the strangest. How do you walk five miles inside a tiny room? Please tell me the floor cheats. The floor absolutely cheats. This is the movement problem. A holodeck room is small. The worlds are enormous. So how do you walk forever in a 10x10 room? You make the floor move under you, so you never actually reach a wall. An omnidirectional treadmill. Disney built a prototype called Hollow Tile. It is described as a multi-person, omnidirectional floor made of hundreds of small tiles. Hundreds of tiny tiles, all spinning independently. No matter which way you walk, the tiles quietly slide you back toward the center.

Real elevation, climbing, falling, still needs tricks no one has solved cleanly.

Something has to decide what the room becomes, moment to moment. The brain of the room. Exactly. In the old way, every blade of grass had to be hand-coated by a human. Slow. Painfully slow. The new way uses AI world models and spatial tracking to build and adjust the space around you in real time. So the room watches the body. Cameras and sensors track where you stand, where you look, and where your hands move. Then update light, sound and touch to match. So the room is reacting to you, not just playing back. That is the leap. A movie ignores you. A holodeck answers you. Finally, a room that listens, the dream roommate. It also never does the dishes. No room is perfect. So the world itself comes from AI now. Google has tested a prototype that lets people create and explore interactive worlds from prompts and images. But you keep saying experimental. Because it is. These systems still wobble, forget details, and break if you wander too far. So if you walk behind the dragon. The dragon may forget it has a back.

We are teaching four systems to agree. Light you can see, sound you can feel, a floor that moves, and a mind that paints the world. And when those four finally sink, you stop noticing the room entirely. And that is the exact moment everything changes. Which raises a fair question. Who is actually building all of this? Funny. I was about to ask. Let's start with the light. The billion pixel wall people. Lightfield Lab, based in San Jose, California. Founded back in 2017. By who? Co-founded by John Caraffin, Brendan Bavensi, and Ed Ibe. They had worked together on early Lightfield camera systems before this. So not random startup founders. They came from imaging. Caraffin came out of cinema and visual effects. Bevancy has a physics background, including instrumentation work tied to experiments at CERN. A particle physicist is helping build a fake Roman ruin. The ruin is in excellent hands. Weird detail. Why do so many of these breakthroughs come out of tiny teens? Because each piece is a deep, specialized problem. You do not need a giant company. An old illusion called Pepper's Ghost, refined for the ride. So the holodeck floor and a Victorian stage trick share a brain. The history of illusion is one long conversation. And we just walked into the latest sentence. Beautifully said. Suspiciously beautiful. I have my moments. And none of them are building the whole holodeck. Each one is building one honest piece. Mars, sunsets, and habitats. The lakes of Titan. Historical events, you are there. And it fits how digital things already sell. A base device, then a library you unlock over time. So the holodeck is a console, and worlds are the games. That is probably the exact model. And the game industry would not wait politely.

Imagine the biggest immersive franchises using the holodeck as their stage. An open-world crime city. A vast fantasy realm. A sweeping role-playing universe. So instead of holding a controller, you walk into the world. The set is no longer on a screen. The set is the room around you. A multiplayer fantasy realm you physically stand inside. And a monthly fee you physically resent. The subscription follows people even into paradise. Especially into paradise. That is where the margins are.

Feeling is distributed, which is exactly why full immersion would need more than a headband. So the body plugs are weirdly justified. Plausibly justified. To fully fool a person, you may have to speak to the whole network, not just the brain.

Sensory neurons in the gut that plug into the microbial environment and listen, in real time, to the bacteria living inside a person. Wait, so a human's gut bacteria are sending status updates? Constantly. And the nervous system reads them, releasing signals tied to mood, appetite, and metabolism. Dear listeners, did you know this about yourselves? Most people never do. You carry a living network of tiny organisms that coordinate and communicate with your own brain. Trillions of them. Talking to you and to each other all day.

So, in a sense, a human is a collective of tiny living things.

And the brain is the hive mind, loosely in charge. So your mood has a comment section run by bacteria. Moderated poorly. Zero quality control. No wonder humans get cranky before lunch. It is a coordinated campaign. A grassroots movement, technically. It gets weirder, doesn't it? I can hear it in your voice. It does. Biologists found that bacteria themselves communicate using electrical signals through ion channels like the ones in the human brain's own cells. So the bacteria inside a person are running their own electrical network. Alongside the bodies. Speaking, loosely, the same electrical language. So a human is not one network. They are a network of networks having a group chat. Researchers sometimes call it a meta-organism. A person plus their microbes as one connected system. That reframes the whole human sense of self before lunch. Apologies to their lunch and its bacteria. They will report back. They always report back. But honestly, how does any of this connect to flying like Neo? Here is the bridge. Because biology runs on electrical signals, engineers are learning to speak that exact language.

Mostly theoretical. We can stimulate sensations, not yet paint a seamless reality. So how far off is Tier 1, honestly? The suit is believable this century. The full mind dive is the far, strange, beautiful, slightly terrifying horizon. And if humans ever reach it, a dream you cannot tell from waking. Is not an escape anymore. It is a second life.

The pressure is real, but tiny. Enough for skin to report a shape, nowhere near enough to hold weight. So if you grab the hollow sword and swing. The hand feels a sword. The room feels nothing. And gravity feels insulted.

The most dangerous kind of knight. But could the feeling alone be convincing? Edges, weight, balance? Edges and texture. Increasingly, yes. Weight is the hard one, because real weight needs real force pulling the arm down. So the sword feels sharp but weightless. A ghost with a good grip. That is the honest ceiling for sound alone. So to truly lift a fake book. You would need something else entirely. A robot prop, a glove that resists the hand, or the deep brain version we talked about.

But behind the scenes, maybe. Behind the scenes, how? The hard cost of a holodeck is the math. Simulating how light bounces, how physics behaves, how a whole living world updates around you in real time. And that math is enormous. Staggering. Quantum computers are suited to certain massive simulations, like molecules, materials, and complex optimization.
