For more than sixteen centuries, an immense column of iron has stood beneath the open sky in Delhi.
It has endured monsoon rains, punishing heat, political upheaval, invading armies, fallen dynasties—and the arrival of countless visitors determined to wrap their arms around it.
Yet somehow, it has barely rusted.
The Iron Pillar of Delhi weighs approximately six tonnes and was created during the Gupta period, likely in the fourth or fifth century CE. Its Sanskrit inscription praises a king named Chandra, generally identified with the Gupta emperor Chandragupta II.
But its remarkable resistance to corrosion has inspired stories far beyond metallurgy.
Some believed the pillar pinned down Vasuki, the serpent king supporting the world. One legend says that when a ruler ordered the pillar removed, its buried tip emerged covered in blood—proof that the serpent had been wounded and the stability of the kingdom disturbed.
Others declared that the pillar could not possibly have been forged by ancient hands. If modern iron rusts, how could people living sixteen centuries ago create something that survives almost untouched?
Naturally, someone eventually suggested aliens.

SPEAKER_01A serpent god, a bleeding tip, a cursed city, an alien theory, a cannonball, and a wish that almost destroyed the one thing time couldn't.
SPEAKER_00And underneath all of it, a piece of ancient metalwork so good it took modern science until 2003 to explain.
SPEAKER_02The truth is better than the aliens. I need you to sit with that.
SPEAKER_00We'll get there. Let's start, shall we? Let's okay. Keep it short because the pillar deserves the time more than the roadmap does.
SPEAKER_02Rude. Accurate.
SPEAKER_00Continue. Who built a six-ton iron column 15 centuries ago? And how? With no blast furnace? Why has it resisted rust when almost no other ancient iron has? Why did people believe it was pinning down the serpent that holds up the world? Why did a very confident author decide it was extraterrestrial? And why did the Indian government finally have to build a fence? To protect an indestructible object from us. Those are the threads. Some of them bleed, one of them is on fire. Let's go! Foundation first. So, the basics. The pillar stands in the Kutba complex at Meroli in Delhi. It's about 7.2 meters tall, roughly 24 feet, with a bit over a meter buried below ground. And how heavy are we talking? More than 6 tons. Around 98% wrought iron. 98% iron, one piece, six tons. In the fifth century. That's the part people skip past. This isn't the mysterious bit yet. This is just the how did they physically make it bit, and that alone is remarkable. So who's the name attached to it? There's an inscription. It honors a king called Chandra, almost certainly Chandragupta II, of the Gupta Empire. That puts it around 400 CE, give or take.

SPEAKER_00It really doesn't. And the inscription? Is it about iron? Metallurgy? A proud look what we made? No, and I love that you asked. It's devotional. It describes the king as a devotee of Vishnu, and it records raising a standard, a dhvaja, to the god, on a hill called Vishnu Pada.
SPEAKER_02So to them, it wasn't an engineering trophy.
SPEAKER_00It was a flagpole for a god. The rest resistance wasn't the point. It was almost a side effect of doing everything else exceptionally well. The miracle was an accident of craftsmanship. Hold that thought. It becomes the whole episode. Wait. Was it always in this spot? Probably not. The pillar was very likely raised somewhere else first, possibly topped with an image of Garuda, Vishnu's eagle, and moved to Delhi centuries later.
SPEAKER_02So it's a transplant.
SPEAKER_00A 610 God flag transplant. Carried somehow by people who apparently feared nothing.
SPEAKER_02How do we move the sacred serpent nail? Carefully and with a great deal of regret.
SPEAKER_00And once it stood in Delhi, out in the weather, it began its real trick. Doing nothing. Beautifully. For centuries. Okay, I've been patient. Why doesn't it rust? Two halves to that. How they built it and what the building accidentally created. Start with the build.
SPEAKER_02Go.
SPEAKER_00No blast furnace existed. So they made iron in smaller batches, spongy lumps called blooms, each may be 40 to 50 pounds, and then they forge welded them. Forge welded meaning. Heat two pieces of iron until they're almost molten at the surface, then hammer them together until they become one piece. Repeat. Again. And again. For six tons. By hand. By many, many hands, with extraordinary control of temperature and timing. That's the first marvel. The sheer forge skill. How many hands, though? Ballpark me. Nobody can say exactly, but to gather six tons of iron in lumps of 20, 30 kilos at a time? The estimates run to something like two, maybe 300 separate furnace firings. Three hundred? That's not a blacksmith. That's a civilization with a group project. Each lump heated to around 1300 degrees, carried glowing to the column, hammered onto the body until it fused. Then the next. And the next.
SPEAKER_02Nobody who started that project lived to see the rain bounce off the finished thing.
SPEAKER_00Almost certainly not. They built something whose entire purpose was to outlast them, and it did, by 16 centuries and counting. And the second marvel is why it survives. Right, here's the key. Modern industrial iron strips out phosphorus. It's usually treated as an impurity. Ancient Indian smelters didn't. This iron has a high phosphorus content, around a quarter of a percent, where modern iron is often under 500ths. So they left the impurity in. They left it in. And over centuries, in Delhi's climate, hot, humid, then dry, over and over, that phosphorus helped grow a very thin protective film across the surface. A film of what? Researchers call it misowite, an amorphous iron oxyhydroxide, together with a phosphate compound. A passive layer, a fraction of a millimeter thick. So it did rust just once. Politely. And then stopped. That is a genuinely good way to say it. It formed a skin of corrosion so fine and so even that the skin itself sealed the metal underneath away from moisture and oxygen.

SPEAKER_00Wait. Say the next part? I read the next part and I gasped. The next part is the good part. It's self-healing, isn't it? It's self-healing. Scratch through the film, expose fresh metal, and because the phosphorus is still there in the iron, the same protective layer forms again over the wound.
SPEAKER_01It has armor that grows back.
SPEAKER_00Slowly, quietly. But yes. Lucy, that is a 1600-year-old object with a functioning immune system. That's poetic, but I'll allow it. Because it's not far off the feeling. And here's what I keep circling back to. Did we ever catch up? Modern metallurgy. Did we match this? Here's the part that gives me chills. In the 20th century, engineers invented something called weathering steel. You might know it as Corton. It's the rusty orange steel on a lot of modern sculptures and bridges.

SPEAKER_00Rusty on purpose. It's designed to form one tight, stable layer of rust that then shields the metal underneath. So it never needs painting. That's the pillar's trick.

SPEAKER_00Same idea, different recipe. Cortin uses copper and chromium. The pillar used phosphorus. But the principle, let it grow one perfect skin of corrosion, and that skin becomes armor is the same. So we invented weathering steel in the 1900s, and a workshop in India shipped the concept in 400 CE. 1500 years earlier. By feel. Without the chemistry to explain it. That's the sentence I can't get past. They weren't behind us. We were behind them and didn't notice for a millennium and a half. That's the whole episode in one thought. Hold on to it. And who figured this out?

So for most of the 20th century, we just didn't know. We knew it didn't rust. We didn't fully know why. That gap, that we can see it but can't explain it gap, is exactly where myth moves in.

SPEAKER_01They did not call it a flagpole. They called it the nail of the earth.
SPEAKER_00The nail of the a cosmic stake. Driven down through the ground so deep it pierced the hood of Vasaki, the great multi-headed serpent that, in the myth, holds up the world. So the pillar wasn't decoration. It was structural for the planet. It pinned the serpent so the world would hold still. That's a staggering thing to believe about an object you can walk up and touch. And then, dear listeners, a king got arrogant. There's always a king.
SPEAKER_02There's always a king. His name was Anangpal Tomar, and he doubted. He thought, surely this is just a story.
SPEAKER_00Surely it doesn't really touch the serpent. A skeptic. I'm contractually obligated to like him. I don't. He ordered his men to dig it up to check.
SPEAKER_01And they pulled the base from the earth, and the tip came up wet, dripping, red. Blood. The blood of Vasuki. The legend says the pillar had truly reached the serpent, and the serpent bled.
SPEAKER_00That's a genuinely chilling image. The king panicked, ordered it shoved back into the ground, but it was too late. The connection was broken. The pillar sat loose now. Dile. Loose. And here's the twist the locals tell.
SPEAKER_02From that word, Vela, loosened, they say the city took its cursed name.
SPEAKER_00Dili. Delhi. The loosened place. Can I do the careful friend thing for one second? Always.
SPEAKER_02That's the deal.
SPEAKER_00Linguists don't actually accept Dhila as the real origin of the name Delhi. That etymology is folk tradition, not settled history.
SPEAKER_02Agreed. But say the rest with me anyway, because the feeling is the point. Go on.
SPEAKER_01The prophecy said, because you disturb the serpent, the Tomar King's line would fall. And the city, loosened, unanchored, was doomed to be conquered. Again and again and again.
SPEAKER_00And Delhi was, in fact, conquered again and again. Sacked. Rebuilt. Sacked. Rebuilt.
SPEAKER_02Seven cities, some say, layered on the bones of the last.
SPEAKER_00History gives that plenty of ordinary reasons. Geography, trade routes, water, power. I know. But imagine living there.
SPEAKER_02Imagine every time an army came over the horizon, some part of you whispering, It's the pillar. He loosened the pillar.
SPEAKER_00The story becomes a way to hold centuries of grief.
SPEAKER_02There's even a verse. Roughly, the pillar was loosened and the Tomar King lost his throne.
SPEAKER_00A whole dynasty reduced to a rhyme about a loose nail. That's the part that gets me. Not the blood. The rhyme. Humans turn their worst centuries into something you can almost sing.
SPEAKER_02So they can carry it. So they can carry it.
SPEAKER_01Also, for the record, if I ever tell you a sacred object is holding the world together, do not dig it up to check.
SPEAKER_00Noted. That's L.N. filtered. Practical theology. Emphasis on impractical. Now the other explanation people reached for. Not gods, visitors.
SPEAKER_02The aliens. I have been waiting.
SPEAKER_001968. A writer named Eric von Doneken publishes Chariots of the Gods. Huge book. His whole thesis, ancient humans couldn't have built the wonders we credit them with. So, extraterrestrials must have helped. And he points at our pillar. He points right at it. He calls it, in effect, an out-of-plact, an object too advanced for its era. His claim: the iron is so pure and so rust-proof it must be made from some extraterrestrial alloy. Because obviously, 5th century humans couldn't possibly understand metal. That's the load-bearing assumption, yes. Can I push back on the dead author? He can take it.
SPEAKER_02Here's what bugs me about ancient people couldn't have done this. It's not wonder, it's the opposite of wonder.
SPEAKER_00It looks up at something a human made and says, no, too good. Must have been someone else. That's genuinely the sharpest critique of the whole genre. It takes credit away from the people who actually did the impossible thing.
SPEAKER_02Real blacksmiths, real furnaces, real sweat and heat and knowledge passed hand to hand for generations. And the theory goes, nah, spaceship.
SPEAKER_00And the physical evidence just doesn't support it. The pillar's chemistry is thoroughly earthly. High phosphorus, wrought iron, slag inclusions, all consistent with ancient bloomery smelting. There's no exotic space alloy. There's expertise.
SPEAKER_02And it's not even the only one, is it? That's the part that kills the alien theory for me.
SPEAKER_00It isn't. There's another iron pillar at Dar in Madhya Pradesh, originally almost twice the height of Delhi's and heavier, over seven tons. There's a bigger one? There was. It's broken now, in three pieces. The story goes that in the 1500s a conqueror tried to haul it away as a trophy, and it fell and shattered in the attempt.
SPEAKER_01So the bigger sibling didn't lose to time. It lost to a man with a bad idea and a rope.
SPEAKER_00Essentially, yes. And there are place names in that region, Lohapura, Iron Town, that tell you this was a whole tradition. A culture that worked iron at this level, again and again.
SPEAKER_02Which is exactly why aliens collapses. You don't get a spaceship to visit twice and build two. You get generations of humans who were just that good.
SPEAKER_00A repeatable miracle isn't a miracle, it's a craft. So the debunk isn't a letdown. The debunk is the upgrade. A god's blood is a beautiful story. Aliens is a lazy one. But a community of humans understood corrosion chemistry by feel, 1500 years before we could write the equations. That's the one that actually gives me chills. The truth is better than the aliens. I told you we'd get there. You did! I doubted you. I dug you up to check. And did I bleed?

SPEAKER_00Here's a scar the pillar actually carries. Not a legend. A dent you can see. The pillar has a dent? High on the shaft. And the story attached to it, reported, not fully verified, is that an invader ordered a cannon fired at it, point blank. Someone shot a cannonball at it. As the account goes, to shatter it. Some versions say to prove a foreign weapon could break a local god. Some say to crack it open for treasure supposedly hidden inside. And it didn't break. The ball struck and the pillar absorbed it. What's left is that dent, and, reportedly, no crack running from it. A cannonball. And it just took it. Remember the forge welding? All those layers hammered into one continuous body. That structure doesn't just resist rust, it resists shattering. The blow spread through the whole column instead of splitting it.
SPEAKER_02So the thing survived the weather for 16 centuries, and then somebody went, but what about artillery? And it survived that too.
SPEAKER_00Empires kept auditioning ways to destroy it. It kept declining. New review. Zero stars. Would not recommend attacking. And this is the thing that survived, don't forget, while the cities around it were sacked over and over. The pillar outlived the people who feared it, the people who worshipped it, and the people who tried to blow it up.

SPEAKER_00It has nothing but time. Which brings us, unfortunately, to the one thing that actually started to hurt it.
SPEAKER_02Something finally got to it?
SPEAKER_00Something did. And it wasn't a weapon. It was affection.
SPEAKER_01Affection?
SPEAKER_00For a long time there was a tradition. You'd stand with your back against the pillar and try to reach your arms around it behind you until your fingers touched. And if they touched, your wish came true. Oh, that's lovely. That's everyone did it, didn't they? For generations. Millions of people. Backs pressed to the metal, arms straining, hands rubbing across the same surface over and over, year after year.
SPEAKER_02Oh no.
SPEAKER_00You see it.
SPEAKER_01The skin. The self-healing film. All those hands.
SPEAKER_00The oils, the sweat, the friction. Human touch, gentle, hopeful, constant, began polishing away the very layer that had protected the iron for 1600 years. Rust started appearing near the base. So the thing cannonballs couldn't crack and monsoons couldn't rot, we were slowly loving the armor off it.
SPEAKER_01With our wishes. Yes. That's almost unbearably human.
SPEAKER_00So in the late 1990s, authorities put up a fence. Not to keep the pillar in, to keep our hands out. We had to be physically separated from it for its own. Protection. Because the danger was never rust or war or aliens. In the end, the danger was a crowd of people who loved it and wanted, each of them, to touch the miracle. And with the fence up, is it safe now? Mostly. But there's a newer worry. The same metallurgist from IIT Kanpur warned that modern Delhi's air is a threat the pillar never faced before. How? It shrugged off 1600 monsoons. Clean rain, yes. But vehicle exhaust and industry make the air acidic, and acidic pollution can gnaw at that delicate passive film in a way ordinary rain never did. So the monsoons couldn't touch it. And now the danger is our traffic. The pillar was engineered for a 5th century sky. We changed the sky. First our hands, now our smog. We keep inventing new ways to endanger the one thing that outlasted everything. It held against nature for 16 centuries. It's us, it has to survive now.

Deep mode activated. And before the whispers, a word about how we don't get lost in them. When we research an episode like this, the difference between an old website said and a study in current science said is everything. That's the perplexity pro habit. You don't want a confident guess. You want the source it's standing on. Sourced answers beat confident fog. Especially when half the internet insists your pillar is a spaceship. Cited beats certain.

SPEAKER_00What's stirring in Hindu sacred artifacts right now? Start with a door. In Kerala, there's the Sri Padmanabhaswami Temple. In 2011, a Supreme Court ordered inventory opened its underground vaults and found gold, jewels, idols, by reported estimates worth over $20 billion. 20? With a B? Reported. And possibly far more, by antique value. But that's not even the strange part. There's a door they didn't open. There's a door they didn't open. It's called Vault B. And it is sealed with the carved image of two cobras. You are kidding me. Serpents. Again. Temple tradition calls it a Nagabandam, a serpent seal. Legend holds that forcing it open brings calamity, and that only the right person chanting a specific mantra could open it safely. To be clear, that part is belief, not physics.
SPEAKER_01But the genuinely wild part is real. That warning was actually argued in front of the Supreme Court.
SPEAKER_00It was cited as a reason to leave the vault shut. So a serpent legend is sitting inside a modern legal case, and as of now, the door is still closed.

SPEAKER_00I did. Here it is. Under Indian law, a consecrated deity is not just a statue, it's a legal person. Uh the idol is a person? Legally? A juristic person. It can own property. It can be taxed. It can sue and be sued in its own name, usually acting through a human guardian. So a stolen idol isn't stolen property.
SPEAKER_02It's a kidnapped citizen.
SPEAKER_00Who can take you to court? That is genuinely close to how these cases work. A god, as the plaintiff.
