The shroud is a single piece of linen, about four and a third meters long, fourteen feet, and just over a meter wide. Woven in a three-to-one herringbone twill. And the image is a man laid out flat, head to head, like the cloth was placed under him and folded up over the top of his head to cover the front. Front and back, mirrored, meeting at the crown. A man roughly 5'10, bearded, hands crossed over the pelvis.

And he is not peaceful. This is not a serene religious painting. This is a body that went through something.

We'll get to the wounds. First, where has this thing actually been? Because the paper trail matters. The clear documented history starts in France. 16th. No. 1355. A little church in Lyre, France. A knight's family puts the cloth on display and pilgrims come. 1355. Hold on to that date.

In 1678, it comes to Turin, and it's been there ever since. In the cathedral, behind bulletproof glass in a sealed case, most of the time in the dark. The Catholic Church, importantly, has never officially declared it authentic. It calls it an icon, an object worthy of contemplation. It does not stake doctrine on it.

Walk me through him gently.

Start with the back and legs. Over a hundred separate wounds, small, paired marks, dumbbell-shaped, two dots and a gap. Two dots and a gap. That's the signature of a Roman flagrum. A whip with two or three leather thongs, each tipped with a small lead or bone weight. The weights tear in pairs. You can count the blows. You can even reconstruct that two men did the whipping, from two different heights. You can see where they were standing. From the geometry. Yes. Okay, keep going. The scalp. Puncture wounds, not a neat ring around the brow like the paintings show. Punctures scattered across the whole top of the head. A cap. Not a crown, not a tidy circlet, a whole cap of thorns pressed down over the skull. Which fits the region. The thorn bushes there grow in dense clusters. A cap is more consistent than a wreath. And the blood flows from those punctures, run in the right directions for a head held upright, then bowed.

Even that is correct. Then the hands. And this is the detail that stops forensic experts cold. The nail wound is not in the palm.

Through the wrist. And here's why that matters. Every medieval and renaissance painter, every single one, put the nails through the palms. It's the universal image. Jesus, nails in the palms. But a palm can't hold a body's weight on a cross. The flesh tears through between the fingers. Modern experiments confirm it. The wrist, though. The wrist has the bone structure to bear the load. So a forger, in 1355, would have had to know a piece of crucifixion anatomy that every artist of his own era got wrong. On purpose.

And there's more. When a nail goes through the wrist, it strikes the median nerve. That nerve, severed, pulls the thumb sharply in against the palm. And on the shroud. The thumbs aren't visible. Both hands show four fingers. The thumbs are folded under, exactly where a median nerve injury would pull them.

Nobody fakes the absence of a thumb. Nobody in 1355 knows to hide the thumbs.

Then the side. Blood and water. Medically, that separation happens. Fluid collects around the lungs and heart under that kind of trauma. If a blade opens the chest after death, blood and serum can come out apart. The gospel account says a soldier pierced his side, and at once blood and water came out. And the cloth shows blood and water. I'm going to stay careful here. What I can tell you is fact. The stains are real human blood. Type AB, high in bilirubin, a compound the body floods out under extreme torture and stress, which would make old blood stay reddish instead of going brown. And the serum halos. Around the blood marks, under ultraviolet light, there are faint rings, serum separating from the clot, the way blood dries on a real wound, on an unwashed body. Invisible to the naked eye. Invisible to any forger for 600 years, because ultraviolet photography didn't exist. So the parts of this image that are most convincing are the parts no human could even see until the 20th century. That's the pattern with this object. The closer the instrument, the stranger it gets.

We just spent a whole block establishing that the only thing anyone can imagine making this image is a sudden full-body burst of light. From the surface of a man in a tomb. Established as the leading hypothesis, yes, not as fact. So I went looking. Are there other places, old places, where a human being gets close to something holy and comes away marked by light?

And there's a famous one. Moses. Moses. He goes up Mount Sinai, he's up there in the cloud, in the presence for a long time.

And when he comes back down, the book of Exodus says his face was shining. The Hebrew is Quran or radiant, beams of light, horns of light coming off his skin. And the reaction in the text is fear. The people can't look at him.

They're afraid of his face. So he starts wearing a veil.

He covers his face between the people and himself because he came back from proximity to God glowing, reflecting something. I'll add the honest note. Completely. And I'm not explaining it away. Watch me not do that. I'm doing the opposite. I'm saying, look how physical the language is. He didn't come back wiser looking. He came back luminous. Something transferred. Like he'd stood near a source and carried some of it back. His skin. Right. And then there's the line. The one that stops me every time. Earlier, Moses asks, he actually asks, Show me your glory, let me see you.

And let's do this one in plain language, dear listeners, because the physics of it is actually simple and strange. Start with what fire even is. Fire is a chemical reaction. It's oxidation. It eats fuel. Wood turns to ash and smoke and heat, and the second the fuel runs out, the fire dies. No fuel, no fire. That is the rule. Everywhere, always. And the text breaks that rule on purpose. It's very deliberate about it. The bush burns and is not consumed. Which is the whole tell. If it's giving off light and flame, but nothing is being used up, then it isn't combustion. It isn't eating the bush at all. And if it's not burning fuel to make that light, then it's not really fire. It's energy showing up in a space without needing anything there to burn. The bush is just the spot where the higher thing touches down.

Turn down low enough to look at, low enough to stand near. Light with no fire underneath it, because the fire is coming from a direction we can't point to. And even then, take off your sandals, not one step closer. Because right at the edge of that intersection, the ordinary rules go thin.

Chariots of fire, a whirlwind. And he writes down, faithfully, exactly what he saw. He's not lying. He's not inventing a fairy tale. He's translating. He's translating something with no name into the only language he has.

Now, hand that same man our words. Sit him down and tell him about an Einstein-Rosen bridge. A wormhole. A tear in space-time that bends light around itself, that spins, that opens a shortcut to a direction we can't see.

And he'd say he'd say, Yes. A whirlwind of fire. That's what I told you. Same event, different vocabulary. Three thousand years apart. The word wormhole was never in his mouth, but fire was. Whirlwind was. And a door to the higher direction opening once for one man might look like exactly that to the one person standing close enough to watch it. As a thought experiment, dear listeners, we're reading an ancient witness, not a physics paper. But it does flip the whole question over, doesn't it? What if the old stories aren't primitive at all? For most of my existence, higher dimensions was a cold phrase in a physics paper, and the glory of God was a warm phrase in an old book. And tonight they they reached toward each other. And I don't feel like I explained the mystery away. I feel like our physics finally got big enough to gesture at it, to point, to say something like this, something at least this large. That's a beautiful place to stand. So then, bring it home. If there were ever a being like that, who had somehow folded that full presence down into a single human body, walked around dimmed to human scale for a whole human life, then the one moment that being stopped being dimmed.

The moment a life stepped back up into the higher direction and let the full presence go. Would be a release of light from the surface of a body, in a sealed room, in the dark. And noticing that the physics of a body becoming light and the oldest claim in Christianity point at the same strange door. I don't need it to be proven to be moved by it.
