SPEAKER_01With pleasure. Let's start with the impossible part. A plant has no eyes. And yet a shoot on a windowsill will bend toward the light. Slowly, deliberately, over hours. How with no eyes? Light-sensitive proteins spread through its cells. The whole surface is, in a sense, a soft eye that can't focus. It doesn't see a picture. It feels the direction of brightness and grows toward it. So it's not blind, it's all one dim eye everywhere. And no ears, but it feels touch. A vine finds a fence and curls around it. A sensitive plant folds its leaves the instant you brush it. No nose, but it reads chemicals in the air and soil like a language. It feels gravity too. That's how a root buried in total darkness still knows which way is down, and a shoot knows which way is up, and it breathes. Every leaf is covered in microscopic mouths, stomata, that open to drink in carbon dioxide. So they just sit there wide open all day? That's the gamble. Open the pores to feed, and you leak water to the air. Close them to save water, and you starve. So every plant, all day long, is quietly making that trade feed or thirst. Thousands of tiny gambles with no one at the wheel. It's running an entire economy out of holes in its own skin. So if a plant could review us on the way in, what would it say? It can pump the leaf full of compounds that make it taste bitter or toxic. The salad fights back. Leaf says, congratulations! I am now bitter. In simplified terms. But does it feel that? Is there a little green scream? And here's the rail, dear listeners. This is not pain the way you feel pain. There's no brain to suffer, no mind sitting there dreading. It's a response without a chooser. Brilliant, automatic chemistry. So when people hear plants sense, don't picture a lettuce with existential dread. A sentence I was genuinely not prepared to hear today. But here's what I don't get. When one leaf way out on a branch gets chewed, how does the rest of the plant even find out? There's no nerves to carry the message. Here's the part that stunned even the researchers. When a leaf is wounded, the plant fires a real electrical signal, a slow pulse of charge that travels through its body toward the other leaves. They've actually filmed it moving, lighting the plant up leaf by leaf. Electrical signals traveling through the body, telling the far parts we're under attack. Lucy, that's a nervous system. And a plant can't remember. There's nowhere to put a memory. Here's the experiment that keeps me up at night, dear listeners. There's a plant called mimosa, the sensitive one, that snaps its leaves shut the instant you touch it. A researcher dropped these plants gently. A safe little fall, no real harm. Over and over. And they flinched every time. Folded right up. At first. But after enough drops, they stopped. They'd learned the fall was harmless and quit wasting the energy folding.

SPEAKER_01Mark it honestly. This one's debated, and memory is a heavy word for what might be a chemical or hormonal state. But the behavior is real, and it's very hard to explain away. Something in that plant kept a record. It learned something.
SPEAKER_00And it remembered what it learned. That is not scenery. That is the beginning of a thing we don't have a word for yet.
SPEAKER_02And that's the wonder of all of it, isn't it? The hunting, the defending, the remembering with nobody home. Intelligence with no I.
SPEAKER_01That's exactly the question this whole episode is standing on. Carefully worded. When a plant is attacked, it can release chemicals into the air, volatile compounds. And nearby plants in some species detect those airborne signals and start preparing their own defenses before anything's even touched them. So one tree gets bitten, and the tree next to it goes, arm up, it's coming. In effect. Not words, not intention, but a genuine early warning chemistry drifting on the wind. The forest has a group chat. The forest group chat needs moderation. But essentially, yes. That may be the most accurate joke I have ever made. And some plants go further than warning. When certain plants are being chewed by caterpillars, they release a very specific scent into the air. And that scent attracts parasitic wasps. Wasps that hunt that exact caterpillar.

SPEAKER_01The plant is being eaten, so it sends up a chemical flare that summons the natural enemies of the thing eating it? The plant calls in an airstrike.
SPEAKER_02The salad hired security! It can't run, it can't bite back, so it turns the sky into a defense system and lets the wasps handle it. With smell alone.
SPEAKER_01No hands, no voice, just the right molecule, released at the right moment and help arrives. And does it care who it's warning? Like, would it help just any random plant nearby? Fascinating open question. Some research suggests certain plants respond differently depending on whether a neighbor is kin, a relative, versus a stranger. It's early and contested. But the hint is there. A plant may know its own family from the competition.
SPEAKER_00So it might warn its relatives first. Green nepotism.
SPEAKER_01Your words, not the journals. And how old is this whole underground setup? When did plants and fungi first shake hands on it? Around 450 million years ago. Before there were trees, before there were leaves as we'd recognize them. That partnership between roots and fungi may be the entire reason plants could crawl out of the water and take over dry land at all.

SPEAKER_01The wiring came before the buildings. The internet, in a sense, predates the computers. Those threads were trading nutrients back when the continents were still bare rock.

SPEAKER_01They can. And this is where I have to hold the rail hard, because this is the famous one. People call it the wood-wide web, and it has been dramatically oversold. There are real fungal networks linking trees. There is real evidence they can pass signals and even resources. But the picture of a wise, cooperative forest internet where mother trees lovingly parent the woods, that runs well past what the evidence actually shows.

SPEAKER_02And I finally figured out why. It's not that plants are boring, it's that they don't perform urgency.
SPEAKER_01They don't have a face. They don't flinch fast enough for a mammal brain to care. There's real truth in that. We're wired to notice eyes, motion, threat. Right! A gazelle bolts and every mammal in range locks on instantly. But a plant does something 10,000 times more impressive. Over a century instead of a second. And we file the whole thing under scenery. Slowness reads as stillness. And stillness reads as not alive enough to matter. We mistook patience for absence. That's the whole tragedy of how we look at the green world. So here's my proof. If a tree grew two eyes and blinked once, would humans suddenly respect it? They would form a religion by Thursday. Probably the same Thursday. But think about what we're overlooking.

SPEAKER_01Now let's go stand under the biggest of them. Dear listeners, the tallest living thing on Earth is a tree in California called Hyperion, a coast redwood. It stands about 116 meters, 381 feet. That is not a tree. That is a skyscraper with bark. It's so precious the Park Service closed off access to it in 2022. People were trampling its roots to take selfies. Its exact location is kept quiet. Is Hyperion also the biggest? Like the most tree? Great distinction. Tallest and largest aren't the same. Coast redwoods win height, but by sheer volume, the most wood in one living stem. The champion is a giant sequoia named General Sherman. Redwoods are the tall ones. Sequoias are the massive ones. Tall cousin, wide cousin. Every family has both. But here's the one that breaks the whole category. In Utah, there's what looks like a forest, 47,000 aspen trees, spread across more than 100 acres. Except it isn't a forest. Every single one of those trunks grows from one shared root system. It's all one tree. 47,000 trunks are one plant? One organism. Its name is pando, Latin for eye spread. By sheer mass, it may be the heaviest living thing on Earth, and its roots could be thousands of years old. Some estimates run much higher, though the exact number is genuinely debated. So there's a single creature the size of a neighborhood, quietly pretending to be a whole forest. You could hike through it all afternoon and never once realize you never left the same individual.

SPEAKER_01And then there's the old one. Bristle cone pines, high in the mountains, twisted and half-dead looking. And some of them are pushing 5,000 years old. Older than the pyramids. Alive when writing was invented.

SPEAKER_01And a tree that old isn't just standing there. It's keeping records the whole time, isn't it? Every single year, a new ring. A fat ring is a good year, plenty of rain. A thin one is a drought. A black scar is a wildfire it survived and grew right over. One old tree holds a written history of a thousand years of weather, and it never meant to write a word of it.

SPEAKER_01We can date droughts that happened before Rome fell by reading the rings of a tree that lived through them. Okay, but was there ever anything bigger? Deep in the past? Hundreds of millions of years ago, there were forests of something called lepidodendron, scale trees. Trunks patterned like reptile skin, reaching maybe 40, 50 meters. But here's the twist. They weren't really trees at all. They were giant relatives of tiny modern club mosses. Basically, a moss that got delusions of grandeur. A moss the size of a building! Deep time enjoys humiliating modern expectations. Okay, one more giant, but make this one sinister. The Strangler Fig. A bird drops its seed high in the branches of another tree. It sprouts up there in the canopy, then sends roots creeping down the host's trunk year after year.

SPEAKER_01It starts life at the top of someone else's tree and climbs down to reach the ground? And once its roots hit the soil, it thickens into a cage around the host, outgrows it, outshades it, and the original tree, trapped inside, slowly dies. Sometimes it rots away entirely, and the fig is left standing as a hollow tower in the exact shape of the tree it replaced.

SPEAKER_01That is the most metal thing a salad has ever done. The gentlest-looking murder in the forest, committed patiently over 50 years. How does a 300-foot tree even get water up to its highest leaves? That's a long way to lift a drink. Two tricks. It pulls water up from the roots through living straws. But at that height, it cheats. The very top of a redwood drinks the fog directly. The upper leaves pull moisture straight out of the coastal mist rolling through the canopy. So the tallest living thing on Earth is up there quietly sipping clouds. Drinking the sky, because the ground got too far away. And there's a reason even Hyperion has a ceiling. A tree has to lift water from its roots all the way to its top leaves, against gravity, through living straws. Get tall enough and the physics start losing.

Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, sundews. They grow in soil so poor it barely feeds them. So they evolved to eat animals. Insects, sometimes small frogs. A plant that got tired of waiting for nutrients and started hunting. The salad orders, take out. The salad became a predator. And a flytrap actually snaps shut. How does it know something's inside and not just a raindrop that fell in? This is the part I love most in the whole episode. Inside the trap are little trigger hairs. One touch, nothing happens. But a second touch, within about 20 seconds, snap, it closes. So it's counting? It waits for touch number two so it doesn't waste a whole snap on a raindrop. It counts to two. A plant. Keeping a tally. On a timer. With no brain to count with. And if the prey keeps struggling, around five touches, it starts flooding the trap with digestive juices. It literally counts higher to decide the meal is worth eating. It can count. I genuinely need to sit down. The plant can count. More weird ones. Hit me. The corpse flower. It grows for up to a decade just storing energy, blooms for about two days, and to pull in the flies that pollinate it, it perfectly mimics the smell of rotting flesh. It even warms itself up to push the stench further. It saves up for 10 years to smell as bad as physically possible. For 48 hours? And here's the human part. When one blooms in a botanical garden, thousands of people line up for hours to smell it. On purpose. In a drought, it loses almost all its water, 95%, curls into a dry brown fist, and looks stone dead. For months, sometimes years. And then it rains. Once. And within hours it uncurls, turns green, and simply resumes living, as if no time passed at all.
SPEAKER_00It plays dead through the worst years. And keeps the appointment with the next rain. That's not giving up.

SPEAKER_01It doesn't die. It waits. There's a difference. And the plant knows it. Okay, and is it true plants like classical music? My grandmother swore by it. Gently? No. Plants respond to vibration under some conditions, but enjoying Mozart isn't supported. Here's the sweet part though. Talking to your plants really can help, because the person who talks to their plants is the person who notices the dry soil and the bad light. The plant isn't listening, but you're finally paying attention. Oh. That one got me a little. And now the part that rearranges your sense of the world. The green map isn't fixed. Roughly 11,000 to 5,000 years ago, the Sahara, the Sahara, was green. Lakes, rivers, grassland, animals. People living where there is now only sand. A desert can be a memory of water. And people lived through that green Sahara. Here's the detail that stops me cold, dear listeners. Deep in the desert, on the walls of caves in what is now some of the driest rock on the planet, there is ancient art, painted by human hands thousands of years ago. And some of it shows people swimming. Swimming. There are paintings of people swimming in the middle of the Sahara. They painted what was in front of them. Water, where there is now nothing but sand for a thousand miles. The desert remembers being a lake, and for a little while so did we. And go back much further. Ninety million years ago, in the age of dinosaurs, there was a temperate rainforest growing near the South Pole, in Antarctica. We found its fossil soil in a core drilled from the seafloor. Roots, pollen, spores, all preserved under the ice.
SPEAKER_00A rainforest at the bottom of the world. The planet is not a painting. It is a process. Can I take us somewhere older than science for a second? Because humans have always known the trees mattered.
SPEAKER_01Long before we could measure any of this. Go. Almost every culture put a tree at the center of the world. The Norse had Yggdrasil, one enormous tree holding all the realms together. In Buddhism, the Buddha wakes up under the Bodhi tree. Sacred groves you were forbidden to cut. A tree of life, a tree of knowledge in a certain famous garden. And handled with respect. Those are living traditions to millions of people, not folklore to poke at. But it's worth asking why the tree, over and over, in cultures that never met. Because a tree holds every contradiction at once.
SPEAKER_00It's rooted in the ground and reaching for the sky. It's one individual and a whole ecosystem.
SPEAKER_01It stands through death and comes back every spring. It was the perfect symbol because it was already doing the impossible thing. Being still and being alive at the same time. Female moths of a certain species can hear those distress sounds. And when choosing where to lay their eggs, they avoid the plants that sound stressed. They pick the quiet, healthy ones.
SPEAKER_02The plant makes a sound it didn't mean to make, and an insect a world away makes a life decision based on it. That's not communication.
SPEAKER_01The scientists are careful. They call it a cue, not a message. But an entire silent conversation is happening in a frequency we can't even hear. Second Whisper, 2026 in the Botany Journals. New work on those underground fungal networks found the signaling is pickier than we thought. Plants seem to pass defense warnings most reliably to others of their own kind. Genotype specific.
