SPEAKER_03A man named Yang Ji Lin, 33 years old, former professor at Qinghua, one of China's top universities. And before that, he trained at Carnegie Mellon in the States with stops at Meta and Google.

SPEAKER_03Now the part I think is the real story, and it's not about the model at all. It's about why it looks the way it does. Why open? Why so efficient? Why China?

SPEAKER_03For a few years now, the most advanced AI chips, the American ones, from NVIDIA and others, have been restricted from sale to China. Export limits. A wall. The idea was to slow China's AI down by starving it of the best compute. And instead of stopping, they built around the wall. And this is where the numbers are genuinely stunning. In 2021, China imported roughly 90% of its AI chips. By last year, that dependence had dropped below 60%. Their stated target for 2030 is around 25. 90 to 25? That's not a trend, that's a sprint. It's a national strategy with money behind it. There's a drafted plan on the order of $295 billion for a national grid of AI data centers, with a rule that 80% of the silicon has to be homemade. That mandate effectively locks the American chips out of their own future build-out. So the wall meant to keep American chips in China's data centers is now a wall keeping them out. The wall got reflected. Yes. And can they actually make the chips? Like good ones? Here's the honest, unhyped answer. And this is the rail. Their most advanced, stable chip process is roughly equivalent to what the leading fabs were doing several years ago, around the 7 nanometer class. And their main foundry is reportedly running above 93% utilization. Which means Which means they're maxed out. No slack. No slack. Every certified chipmaker is fighting for the same factory time. So it's not magic. It's not they've caught up completely. It's they're doing a great deal with older, harder-won tools, at full tilt with no room to spare.

SPEAKER_03Vindicated. Refreshing the page, whispering, I said this. Nobody's going to apologize to them either. Nobody ever does. No, the people who are early just have to enjoy being right in private. But here's the twist I like. The printing press spread because a book is small. You can hide one in a coat. This mind is the opposite. It got out, but it weighs 1.4 terabytes and needs a power station. The genie's out of the bottle, and the genie is enormous. That's a real and lovely wrinkle. For the first time, the dangerous idea is free to copy, but expensive to use. The bottleneck moved. It's not secrecy anymore. It's electricity and silicon. The gatekeeper isn't a lock, it's a power bill. Put that somewhere. That's the shape of this whole decade.

That's $500,000 to a million dollars. Half a million? To run a free download. To run it well. And that box pulls five to ten kilowatts continuously. Remember the gigawatt data center from earlier?
