***WE WILL BE FILMING EPISODES NO LATER THAN FALL/WINTER 2026***

SPEAKER_00

All right, welcome back to episode two of the Tape Left Running podcast. We are a weekly movie podcast. We're supposed to be coming back every week. It's been a little longer because what happened last week, Kyle, we something happened with the audio.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Brian uh he's making a face like he's not the one that controls all of this stuff.

SPEAKER_00

However, well, uh didn't you do something on the computer that screwed up the audio?

SPEAKER_03

No.

SPEAKER_00

I think you're remembering it wrong, Kyle. No. You were remembering it wrong.

SPEAKER_03

No, I'm not. Anyway, we spoke for about an hour and nothing happened.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

We played it back and we heard some sound effects.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. One, I think, is all we the sound effects were actually no, two. The sound effects recorded no problem. It was the uh we just didn't switch something in the computer. So we're back this week and hopefully it'll be better. I gotta say one thing. I can't stand listening to myself talk in when I edit. I hate my voice. You had a really nice voice, I think. It's like No, I don't like to hear it either. You don't like to hear it either? Oh my god, I can't stand it.

SPEAKER_03

No, I don't like it.

SPEAKER_00

Anything new and exciting this week? Other than your bench?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'm staining a dining room table. Tell us about it. I got it for free.

SPEAKER_00

It looked sh shitty in the beginning, you think, right? And now you've sanded it.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. Now I stained it.

SPEAKER_00

Black.

SPEAKER_03

Basically black, yeah. I'm excited about it. It's my first sanding project. I'm never doing that shit again. But Ryan.

SPEAKER_00

Was that mine or yours?

SPEAKER_03

It was yours.

SPEAKER_00

You fucking idiot. I was just gonna say you're gonna get it right up. It's my barber too.

SPEAKER_04

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

I texted him seven hours ago telling him that I wasn't gonna make it tomorrow. But what are you gonna do? Um, oh, so what I watch, I wanted to tell you about. I wanted to get your thoughts on it. Um, I don't watch it as much. I used to be like really into it. I think it's just because it's overloaded with content, but I watched the uh the White House fights, the UFC.

SPEAKER_03

Um, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Never thought I would see that.

SPEAKER_03

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

You know, never never ever.

SPEAKER_03

I thought it was really cool. I watched some clips of it. I did not watch all of it. I'm not really someone that watches that stuff. Alex woke up at like 2 a.m.

SPEAKER_00

No shit.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because the time there is so different.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I I watched them and I was up late. I was exhausted the next day. It was like they went on till after one. So if he watched them all, then he was up late too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, like today he's waking up at 4 a.m. and I think it'll be like our nine o'clock. Yeah, or 10 o'clock.

SPEAKER_00

Where how far away is he? I don't know. I thought he was somewhere else for some reason.

SPEAKER_03

Francais.

SPEAKER_00

Francais. Well, I don't know. I knew he was like stationed, but I thought he was like in tri I don't know. I didn't think he was that far away. Yeah. That's far. I wish.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Have like a little vacation somewhere cool.

SPEAKER_00

That's yeah, that's far enough.

SPEAKER_03

They said it was 105 and the feel like was 115.

SPEAKER_00

It's like dry.

SPEAKER_03

Ugh. Couldn't do it. I can't even do it when it starts to get hot. And it's like 85 degrees. I get irritated. What does that mean? You get irritated. I start to get pissed off because it's so hot.

SPEAKER_00

Who do you think looks cooler with headphones on? Me or you?

SPEAKER_03

Not fucking you. What? All right, we have stuff to talk about.

SPEAKER_00

All right, let's so big things we're gonna talk about today. Two big movies that I'm excited for are Backrooms and Obsession, and we're definitely gonna get into those. We also wanted to touch on which me and Kaya both weren't like huge fans of. Um, I do like the director. I just wasn't the movie was fun to watch, and that's Hokum from 2026.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, yeah. Um if you thought it was I mean, I don't know. We'll we'll get into it though. Basically, the theme is like May movies because these are all movies that did come out in May.

SPEAKER_00

Correct.

SPEAKER_03

I thought we had oh, we had one more. We had um Undertone.

SPEAKER_00

Undertone. We saw Undertone too, which is good. We'll talk, we'll talk about Undertone, but we'll get into to Hokum. So Hokum, obviously the director of uh caveat and oddity. Um he I think those three movies, including Hokum, are called a Conquistador trilogy, um, which he now ended with with that film. Um I I do I do enjoy his movies. He's he's from he's from Ireland, so he's very close to um, you know, like he's his movies are very based on like where he's from. He tries to keep it, I think, authentic to to his like to to Irish folklore and things like that, and just his weird ideas that he has. Um, I was a fan, a huge fan of Oddity. This one was a little bit just I liked it, I enjoyed it, but it was like I don't know, it wasn't scary enough. The ideas weren't fleshed out enough. So I feel like there was points that touched and I was like, or things that happened in the movie, and I was like, I want I want to see them go further in this direction, and then but we never got much more of it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So I think this will kind of include some spoilers, so sorry about that. But I think with Holcomb, like a lot of my issue was so me and Brian actually went into this movie blind. Neither of us looked up anything about it, we didn't look at any reviews, we saw nothing, and we just kind of went in it, went into it expecting not really much. We just kind of went in and expecting. I mean, I think you did know who the director was.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's Damian McCarthy. I definitely knew who the director was because I'm familiar from caveat, which is like a yeah, I've seen that. Yeah, he's also always has it's something I've noticed. He's very into like kind of weird puppets, muppets, puppets, if you will. He's it's I don't know, it's a theme. And I I guess that's another thing of this one. Like, I'm I'm a sucker for Muppets and Puppets and things like that. I don't know. I just like little creepy things.

SPEAKER_03

But was it a theme? Because that's the thing. That's kind of the issue with the movie.

SPEAKER_00

Well again, I think that's where I'm going, is yes, it's not a theme. But you think you think it's gonna be, and you don't know where you're going in the film. But I think you don't know. You don't think I know where I'm going right now? I know where I'm going, Kaya. I'll get you there. Just shut your ass up. No, but I um what I'm saying is okay, when you watch the trailer, they show that rabbit, right? They show that creepy rabbit, and you think he's gonna be this creepy puppet rabbit's gonna be a you know focal point of the movie. It's not. And I don't think it was an oddity either. Um, there was like a creepy, like dummy wax figure in that movie. They showed it heavily in the trailer. Well, yes, it was in the movie, but it wasn't in there a lot. It hadn't, you know, not a ton to to do with it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Well, I guess that was my point, is the movie was just kind of all over the place. Like they were talking about this witch that they closed the the honeymoon suite off for. But then when you start watching the movie, the witch is actually in the basement, and the only thing that's leading her to this honeymoon suite is the dumbwaiter. Which I guess I'm just not it just didn't make much sense. Like, where was the backstory to the honeymoon suite? Where was the real backstory to like the writer? Because the writer in the movie like randomly just decides to kill himself one day, and you don't really know where that's coming from.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like he's he clearly suffers from depression and he's like depressed, but it's almost like oh my gosh, when you're a rich author, like when you so you I mean, and yes, his parents died, he's there to like get the ashes in Ireland, but again, he's like he's also an asshole to people, and it's like yeah, he's like insufferable.

SPEAKER_03

Like, even when people are being nice to him, he's just rude.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I do I'm I do like the actor who played him. Um, I think he's been trying to do more serious stuff over you know the past uh five years or so. Adam Scott, I enjoy him in most of the stuff I see him in. He's a you know talented actor, talented enough, I think, for for this role. Um, I don't know. I just uh it was too much of a mashup. It was too all over the place. It was it was a crime, it wanted to be a crime movie, a mystery, a horror, yeah, uh, in a cult. It it just it was too much of everything, and I just think it wasn't fully fleshed out. I actually watched an interview with the director, and he was saying he's got all these ideas he wanted to put into the movie. It shows. I think that's but I don't know. It it was fun. The ending, I guess, like when he the whole well, I won't ruin it, but the the dumbwaiter scene, it was like very uh it was like well thought out, but I'm almost like, how how is he gonna figure this out? This guy's supposed to be scared out of his wits in a hotel and drunk, and drunk and getting stalked by uh an evil entity, and now he's I mean, this is comp this is more complicated than a grandmaster chess session. Yeah, I don't know. I mean it's it's all over the place.

SPEAKER_03

I just when it came to the the woman, like the the employee that was at the hotel that died in the first place, which caused him to go into the honeymoon suite. Right. Then there's like some random guy that like just lives in the woods and lives like around the hotel, and nobody knows where he came from or who he is.

SPEAKER_00

Sure. And she's supposed to be like the focal point of the movie. I mean, her death is what uh causes the string of events, you know what I mean? Yeah, well, I mean, maybe not the whole part, but I mean that's yeah, it's a good point of the movie.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. And the only thing that we get from her really is just she is dead. I don't I don't really know.

SPEAKER_00

That's another thing. I I said this when we uh tried recording. Um I said she I thought when they were talking at the bar, I'm like, oh, they're gonna they're gonna meet up after and they're gonna go explore and we're gonna get more of them like investigating the witch. And I thought that was gonna be cool. I was actually excited to see that part, but again, no, she left. And then, you know, clearly we find out she's not coming back.

SPEAKER_03

But I just think every angle that it started at, it literally just stopped, like it fell flat. Like it's literally like how my brain thinks is what that movie was. Like, oh, there's the there's a witch in the basement, but wait, there's actually yeah, there's a guy down here, and this guy killed his wife, and this guy this guy did this, and yeah, I just I don't know, it just felt like it was really all over the place. And I I don't know. I wish I could give it like a saving grace. You said it was a fun watch. I I guess. Did I say it was a fun watch? You did when we recorded last? No, you just said it.

SPEAKER_00

You oh did I really no, I'm just kidding. Yeah, it was a fun watch. I think I had fun watching it. I don't think it was like I wasn't over the moon, like I I wasn't walk out of the theater. Like, I mean, it was uh I I don't know if fun's not the right word.

SPEAKER_03

It was I think I was still confused.

SPEAKER_00

It was adequate when we got up.

SPEAKER_03

I was just still confused.

SPEAKER_00

I'm excited. I'm sorry, I'm I'm excited we're doing the podcast, but I don't I didn't want to like downplay the movie. I don't want to like make it seem like I had a horrible time watching it.

SPEAKER_03

No, I don't think it was a horrible time. Yeah, I just don't think I don't know if I would classify I would say it was an interesting watch. It kept you engaged because you didn't know what the fuck was happening.

SPEAKER_00

There you go. Yeah, and I just think it went too, it was too there was too many genres. I think if we did a little bit more focusing on whatever, whatever that that is, yeah, whether that be crime or the puppet, or the puppet, or hor straight horror, or straight mystery, yeah, I'm fine, but let's let's pick Elaine. I'm excited to see what he does next. Yeah, I do like this director. Like I said, I was a big fan of caveat. I like Oddity. I liked Oddity. If I had to pick a favorite out of those three, it would be Oddity. That would be my heaviest recommendation for uh for the for Damian McCarthy. But he's he's awesome, and I'm definitely excited to see what he does next. Um now that this conquistador trilogy is over, I think we'll get you know something else. Something else for sure. Excited to see what he does.

SPEAKER_03

Boom, boom, boom. Now let me hear you say way ho. Way-ho. What the hell is that about? I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

Bippity boppity.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

No. You didn't like you don't know where that's from.

SPEAKER_03

Bippity boppity.

SPEAKER_00

Bippity boppy. It's from um when uh Michael Scott is in the office and he's trying to- I was just gonna say that sounds like an office thing. Yeah, and he's trying to he's uh negotiating for his raise.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And and Daryl's like giving him pointer, so when he's in there, Jan like says something to him, and he's like bippity boppy.

SPEAKER_03

I remember that.

SPEAKER_00

Makes no sense at all. Yeah, no. What are you gonna do? I don't know. I don't know. So I won't say my if I had to pick out of backrooms and obsession, we'll talk about obsessions last because I think that's my favorite by far out of not by far, but my favorite out of these three. Out of these four main movies which are interesting, okay. Yeah, Undertone. I mean, we saw Undertone. I think Undertone got not the credit it deserves. It's a hard film to do. The whole point of that film was to, it's a pot it's based on a podcast, an audio only podcast. So the whole point of that movie is I mean, obviously you're watching something on screen, you see the girl talking and all this, but her co-host you never see it's done through audio. A lot of the scares are done through audio, and it's done really well. But I think people went into that thinking, you know, they're getting all these disglorious special effects show, and it just, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because the movie quite literally takes place in one setting. You see nothing else besides the house that she's in.

SPEAKER_00

Which is so hard to do.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I thought it was really good. I thought there were some really good, um I guess I mean, were they really jump scares? Do they count as jump scares? I guess. Because it was audio, it was all audio. Oh, of course. I think like some of it didn't make much sense and it could have, I guess, expanded on some other stuff, but I thought it was really, really good at being creepy.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, I agree. There was there were some really creepy parts in their range, yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_03

And I think you're unsettled a lot of the time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like, especially like the mom.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that was really good and stuff towards the end. And I think they did a good job with a co-host too. I like that like you he definitely was a character in the movie, but you didn't you didn't see him. Yeah. But he was a care he was a main character. You know what I mean? That that's hard to do. It's hard to do. It was uh you know, and then I I give them credit because anything uh the I could only imagine the audio production they had to do after and the editing um to get that to sound right. And uh I liked it. I just I think uh I think it's credit it deserves. Small indie horror film, but yeah, you know, it was on tears, it it did okay.

SPEAKER_03

I thought I thought it was pretty good. I don't think it was like the movie of the year, but I actually thought it was pretty good. I thought it was one of the better movies that we've gotten in terms of like giving unsettling and giving something that we haven't seen before, because we really haven't gotten a movie like that before.

SPEAKER_00

You're right. And well, I and I always like audio. Like, remember um I always bring this up a last shift. If anybody's ever seen that, there's actually they remade it and it's called Yeah, what is it called? I don't know, but last shift's a movie about a girl, and it's it's the last shift of their old police station. So she goes there basically it's her first shift. It's her first shift as a police officer, and it's basically the last night of this old police station. So her first shift is just basically go there and watch the police station. It's an easy job. They're like, hey, some bums might stop by, I guess, send them down the street to the new location, and it's just a very it's basically this cult that was murdered, and you know, it they haunt the police. But the sound is done very well in that movie. The sound is just so well done. Yeah, and that's not an audio focused movie, but it's just uh it it always sticks with me as like a horror movie that had really great sound design and production.

SPEAKER_03

And decent twist, I'd say.

SPEAKER_00

I thought they did a great job. I love some of the uh the special effects, like the face they put on the main cult member at the end. Yeah. You know how he's got like sharp teeth. He looks very scary. Yeah. And they redid it. It's called um it it it was supposed to be a sequel, but it and I know you watched it because we talked about it, but it wasn't really a s it was called Malum, and that was like the it's basically a reimagining or reboot. I didn't really understand why they did it. Because I'm pretty sure it was the same director. It was Anthony De Blasi, who's a pretty talented horror director. Um I didn't I saw Malaum, I just didn't understand why they did. I don't know if he wasn't happy with how the first one came out. Even the character was the same.

SPEAKER_03

Which is insane though, because I don't know how you're not happy with the way the first one turned out.

SPEAKER_00

Right, it was I thought it was really good. I did too. Yeah, it's for independent recent horror in the last 10 years or so. It's definitely one that I think of, for sure.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I agree.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, I don't know. Undertone never I don't think I I honestly when we saw that I was like, I was thinking that was gonna get more um I don't know, more like applause than it than it did.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know why it didn't, but well, because if you remember too, I even said like, oh yeah, I've been hearing about this movie and you didn't even hear about it.

SPEAKER_00

No, that that was another puzzle surprise because we went we went out of nowhere and saw it. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because all of a sudden I started seeing things with the movie, and I was like, Whoa. Yeah, what is this? What could this be? And I actually didn't really know what it was, but I was like, you know, we should go see it. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Why you flirting out the stream slow?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

My god, you're an idiot. Yeah. Anyways, I don't know. You look like uh special officer doofy recording for the city. I wish I could have got your voice or your your face, but yeah, what are you gonna do? Yeah, all right.

SPEAKER_03

Smell my finger.

SPEAKER_00

That's terrible.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I also saw a scary movie.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, why don't you say how it went? Because you went and fought pooch.

SPEAKER_03

I thought it was pretty good. That's it. That's all I gotta give people.

SPEAKER_00

You said that you said they made fun of um they made fun of long legs.

SPEAKER_03

Let me there you go.

SPEAKER_00

I was just gonna say that last week. Kaya sang that song. So I was hoping she would do it again, and she did.

SPEAKER_03

So I did.

SPEAKER_00

And I had to look that up. I looked at that. He's um, you know what? It's in the beginning when he's talking to the girl. No, it could be you know the whole thing, you weirdo. You're all get into it. Yeah, he's uh I looked that up. He's like, what does he say? Because he's like, let me in now, and he's like, if you don't, I think he's like, and it could be something, it could be something.

SPEAKER_03

Because it could be great, no, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

He's like, and if you let me in, it could be great. And then he's like, but if you don't let me in, I could come back not once, not twice, but whenever I like, yeah, yeah, that is what it is.

SPEAKER_03

That was such a good movie, so yeah, they make fun of that, they make fun of terrifier, they make fun of the the mall scene in terrifier, so that was funny.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, um, we gotta remember not to hit this desk. I did it like seven times in the beginning with a coffee cup. I'm sorry. Just shut up. Sorry, Kai. Let me tell you what to do. Just shut up. All right, I really apologize. God damn it. All right, well, what are you gonna do? Let me in now. It's so creepy. He says it to the little girl, too.

SPEAKER_04

It's fucking weird.

SPEAKER_00

He does a really good job in that movie. It's insane. Such a it would and to cast him and have him look that weird, that's such a fucking uh like what am I trying to say? It's such a fucking gamble. Yeah, it is such a gamble to do that. It really is. It's a crazy fucking gamble to do that in a movie.

SPEAKER_03

Well, they make fun of, yeah, long legs, terrifier, scream. I think there was another movie.

SPEAKER_00

You know, I'm I love Scream, especially. I can't watch them seriously now, but because of what my god, I mean, can we get some tightening up on the endings? I mean, what the fuck is going on?

SPEAKER_03

I don't I haven't even seen the last one.

SPEAKER_00

I haven't seen seven yet. I've been putting it on. I haven't seen it. I and I like like the begin like even the New York City one. I love the fucking lead up to the end. I love fucking the reboot. I think they did a great job on the reboot. Yeah, I haven't watched them. Well, they did. The fifth one is good. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

I'll give it that. Maybe I'll watch it. I think that's where I I stopped at the fourth, but I'm almost positive.

SPEAKER_00

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but the nostalgia of Scream is like the it was the comeback of the slasher film. And the slasher film, it's okay, we already have a good bad guy, but the whole point of that is the reveal at the end. And if if the killers aren't like making sense, if you gotta have something cool. Like the first one it was billions stew. They're like psycho fucking high school guys, it made you know, but it's like and then the second one you had his fucking mom. And uh I don't know, it's just you can't just pull these guys out of nowhere and have somebody care at the end. Yeah, yeah, it's not gonna happen.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I don't know. I haven't I haven't been a fan since I I like the like the first two, and then like I don't know. I feel like it's just one of those I just hit the table.

SPEAKER_00

I don't give a shit. Next episode.

SPEAKER_03

Whatever.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Well, you know, if you just don't care, you don't care about the you don't just just fucking turn my mic off. Just fucking you'll just sit there and you're gonna listen to me for the rest of the the recording. You might get your microphone turned off if you keep doing that.

SPEAKER_03

Stupid Is that gonna be the only

SPEAKER_00

A new one, ready? That's not new.

SPEAKER_03

No, it's not. What did you say?

SPEAKER_00

That's that's the new one I got. Don't be a hater. Don't be hating on my Fisher Price shit over here.

SPEAKER_03

It's definitely like a Fisher Price zone. Is it not cool though? It is pretty cool. I'll give it that. All right. Well, whatever. All right.

SPEAKER_00

What is that? Was that Halloween? No. Your tone's all wrong. No, it's not. It's all wrong.

SPEAKER_03

You don't know what I was singing because I wasn't singing Halloween. That's why I asked. Doofus. Was it Halloween?

SPEAKER_00

Stupid. And that wasn't a sound effect. That was me doing that. Talent. You can't even tell. You can't even tell the difference. That's how talented I am. Ready? Sound effect. Is it you?

SPEAKER_03

Oh no, it's not.

unknown

Look how stupid you are.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. You sit right across from her. Was it really you?

SPEAKER_03

No, I thought you recorded it and made it into a button, you fucked hard.

SPEAKER_00

You gotta watch, and that's another thing I'm gonna bring up, and you're lucky you're lucky you're not getting kicked off the podcast for it. Um, our podcast is known as explicit because of your naughty language, Kaya. Well No, I'm just kidding. It wouldn't be explicit anyways.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I can't help myself.

SPEAKER_00

And also we're talking about Yes, it's gonna it's a joke. Yeah, it's gonna be explicit no matter what.

SPEAKER_03

Turn me off. Turn me up. Turn my mic off.

SPEAKER_00

Are you gonna start freestyling? That mic is on. Oh my god. Kaya's not a is it because you got something to eat? She texted me on the waves that I had to eat my dinner so I could be focused. Yeah, I think it's honestly doing the opposite. I'm glad I got nothing to eat. Wasn't able to shower. I have a clock. It's on you. Brian probably fucking stinks. No, it would be no. I'm like one of the best smelling people ever.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, whatever. Anyway. All right. Don't act. Don't ever anyway.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Now we're gonna get into the meat and potatoes of this of this podcast that we were supposed to record, you know, fucking eight days ago. Okay, backrooms. I've had to do this several times. How do you explain backrooms to somebody that doesn't know what the fuck you're talking about? You're going to see backrooms, your mom or whoever, or grandma. What do I explain it? Exactly. I know you're I know I know what it is, but I'm saying, how do you explain it to somebody? I just want to hear what you say.

SPEAKER_03

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I'm I'm going to see back rooms tonight.

SPEAKER_03

Oh Why is my mom 80 years old?

SPEAKER_00

She's not, it's your grandma. Well, I do mind I can do your mom. Kenya, what is it? Oh, what's backrooms about? What is wrong with you? Why? She doesn't sound I know your mom. I've met her. Alright, I'll do it. I'll do a little better. Hey, Kai, Kaya, what's on your what you're saying? Backrooms.

unknown

I can.

SPEAKER_00

All right.

SPEAKER_03

All right, all right. To me, I would say black backrooms.

SPEAKER_00

Kaya. Black rooms?

SPEAKER_03

Is that what you just said? Yes. It's Juneteenth, by the way.

SPEAKER_00

That's that's a good point. Kaya's uh biracial, so I am. Yeah, let's uh let's give a round of applause actually happening Juneteenth. Yep, Kaya, can you let me oh my god, I I'm so fucked. Where's the I know we have a round? Keep going, Kaya. We have a round of applause.

SPEAKER_03

This is going on really long.

SPEAKER_00

That motherfucker goes on forever. I remember I forgot about that. It's like uh 30 seconds too.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah. Okay, anyway, backrooms to me. If I was going to tell someone I was going to see backrooms, I would say it's essentially a concept that was.

SPEAKER_00

I like that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I guess it's a concept that was made up of rooms, liminal spaces. Wow. Look at her using the lingo and everything that try to replicate our dimension or our world. I like that.

SPEAKER_00

I was thinking in my head, emulate the real world.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and that's that that's what I'd say, I guess.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, I like that. That's a pretty good explanation because it's hard to I had to do that to like two people, and it you can't really like describe the movie because then they're like, what the fuck are you talking about? Yeah. If they have no clue what it's about, and then you can't, if they do know what's about, or they've heard of backrooms, you can't tell them really about the movie. No, without giving something away. You'll give something away. So, anyways, there's gonna be spoilers just because there's no way. But basically, backrooms uh did a little bit of research. I mean, it it started kind of twofold. Somebody put a picture on Reddit, it was just this drab-looking yellow-tinged uh office space. I think they somebody took a picture because they were trying to uh get a before and after picture, they're remodeling the building. Then, I don't know, however many days later, some guy writes a caption. Okay, and this is what actually like makes it take off well, I shouldn't say this is what makes it take us off. This is what gives it its uh its name, and this is what gives it like kind of the start of this phenomenon that started. So he writes Um If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality, which is essentially just glitching out of reality, however it happens, it could be through a wall, whatever, you no clip out of reality in the wrong area, you'll end up in what's called the backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights, at maximum humbuzz, and approximately 600 million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in. God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you. And now the subreddit group has over 150,000 subs. Um and in 2022, Kane Parsons, who's now just turned 20, um is uh just got done his press release for the Backrooms movie. He started in 2022 creating a web series based on those original 4chan Reddit posts. And I guess people kind of got annoyed with him because they didn't think he was going by the actual story. And uh Kai is yawning. Kai is yawning over there, just caught her.

SPEAKER_03

Um I'm crashing for my cosmic brownie.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, it was um basically that's in, you know, it was just uh it it just he made these YouTube videos and he made them all. Did you know that the his original YouTube videos, which I found insane, they're all done using Blender. Like if you were to watch one of his YouTube videos, you would think that he just went and like a I'll show you one after. You would think he just went into a mall, like an abandoned mall, and filmed that. No, it's all digitally done. He's like he's like a prodigy, he really is.

SPEAKER_03

Interesting.

SPEAKER_00

And I like that they asked him about AI. I watched an interview, he's like, absolutely not. He's like, fuck no, I would never use AI.

SPEAKER_02

Good for him.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I like that. But backrooms. So the movie essentially it follows this guy named Clark. Yep. Clark, right? Yeah, he owns a furniture store and he's kind of just uh I don't know, the lights are fucking up and he's uh going through a divorce. He lives at his furniture store, he sleeps on a bed, which kind of works out.

SPEAKER_03

Well, allegedly he's going through a divorce. Because if you remember, he's an unreliable narrator. Exactly. So you go into this, he starts talking to his therapist, and that's pretty early on into the movie where he's speaking to his therapist. Very early on. Um, and they do an exercise where he begins talking about his wife, and all he can say is that he's still paying for the house and he can't be there. But he never says that he's going through a divorce, and as the movie goes on, you start to believe that maybe he actually murdered his wife.

SPEAKER_00

You know, and you're right. Another thing I read, and correct me if I'm wrong, in the movie, they never say it's his wife. I mean, it's it's alluded to implied, it's implied, it's alluded to very heavily, but I don't think they ever say it. Yeah, you know, maybe I I read something that said that, and I was I wanted to ask you because I'm like, I could have because I mean you know.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. Yeah, I actually don't now that you mention it, I actually don't know. That's what's so fun about this movie is you can interpret it so many different ways. I think it does a really good job at like tugging on your psyche because you don't really know what's coming or what's going to happen, or even like at a certain point, you're like, okay, who's the good guy? Who's the bad guy? Like, what the hell is happening?

SPEAKER_00

And the main actor does such a great job. Oh my gosh. He's such a this guy's a journeyman. He's been he's been an actor forever. I've seen him in so many things. Um, his name is super hard to pronounce, so I'll try to pronounce it the best I can. But um, let me look his let me look him up. I forgot. I gotta look at the name before I say it. It's uh Chewitel Ajafor. Chiwitel Ejafor. But he's uh he's amazing, that guy. And Kane Parsons, I can't believe the direct I mean the director is 20 years old. It's insane. It's utterly insane. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

For him to be able to come up with that.

SPEAKER_00

And have the wherewithal to, you know, like another thing, like he I heard him say he's gonna um he's looking for a screenwriter to fully flesh out his sequel at backrooms. And I was telling you last week, I think that's like amazing for like a 20-year-old to be able to actually say, Hey, I'm gonna, you know, I'm 20, I'm gonna find another amazing screenwriter to help to take some of this workload off, you know, to hear it, have the wherewithal at 20 to know how to do that, or not to know how to do that, but to to implement that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I think that's cool.

SPEAKER_03

I I just thought it was a really, really, I don't want to say fun, but I just thought it was a very engaging watch. Like I think the entire time you're on the edge of your seat. Me and Brian also had a special experience when we were going to watch it because we had um special seats, so that even kind of added to the effect more. Our seats would shake.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we did like this premium seating, it's it was called uh magnify Regal. Does it? Yeah, but yeah, it was uh I mean I wouldn't do it like every movie, but that was definitely fun to do backrooms and it it felt like a big movie, so it was I was glad we did it with that. Burp, you're a good guy. I can't get it out anyway. I feel like did you get the freedom burp the first time?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I did.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, you did, all right.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, come on.

SPEAKER_00

All right, my bad. Come on, you know, but um I yeah, you're right. Like definitely I think fun for sure. Um, but I loved like the Christmas scene, like that was one of my favorite rooms. That was awesome. I can't wait to watch that again. I I can't wait to watch it.

SPEAKER_03

And that's the thing with this movie, too, is I think no matter how many times you watch it, you're still gonna find things or notice things that you didn't. Like I was thinking about this the other day. If you remember the the dinner scene, and he's like, Oh, and I've realized you can eat them. He's eating memory foam. Yeah, memory. Yeah, like the rooms are based off of your memory.

SPEAKER_00

How you perceived it or thought you perceived it. Exactly. He's like, and and the director was saying, I in this interview I watch, he's like, you know, we have all these little things we keep pitting in our brains, you know, and they a lot of the things we remember aren't useful to us. You know, you might remember your aunt's uh room you used to sit in during Christmas when you guys used to visit her. Right. You might remember your friend that used to the smell of his basement. We used to go play video games there when you were younger. And it's like it's how the moon rooms remember how you remember them. And it's very like it's like a living, breathing, uh, like you were saying, an interpretation of our real world that's just never ending. And it's almost like why do we why did we find that original pic why did people find that original picture so um uh so interesting? Why has it you know what I mean? Why has it taken on such a huge life? You know, why did just a drab office picture with a caption take off?

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_00

You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_03

I think it's because it's one of those things that could definitely be I guess a reality in a weird way.

SPEAKER_00

Like it's almost like it's so close to it that it's like the only thing that's stopping it is the portal, I guess. You know, yeah, it is right, it's it's unbelievable, but almost like believable. Like in that sense, exactly it's almost like they they come at it, even the movie. And I said it you can't do that movie perfectly in a two-hour movie. No, you're never gonna hit it. Backrooms, it's such an expansive, there's so much lore and just no fan fiction and and then there's canon.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, there's so much like and you know what we never really got, or maybe you did, is the the like the Jesus statue that just kept repeating things in different languages. What was that?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, somebody said it looked like Charles Copi, who's an actor. Um, yeah, I don't think it was Jesus, but it was just a random guy. Oh, I thought it was Jesus. It looks similar to him, but I don't think it was. Oh um, but no, I'm if it was, I'd yeah, it was just a random cutout and I think of a guy with a beard and yeah, he was saying stuff in different languages. Like Jap, it was like Japanese, Spanish. It was just kept going.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I don't there's just so much so much to unpack. I'm actually very excited for it to get on streaming services. Same. So I can just re-watch it.

SPEAKER_00

Woman or you know what I'm looking forward to.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, the Blu-ray.

SPEAKER_00

What did you just say? The Blu-ray. It's 4K, Kai. They do 4K now. Don't disrespect that. Wait, what's over there? What's the difference? It's a 4K, 4K. It's four times what a Blu-ray is. You see the do you see a black case over there anywhere?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Let's see. What can I see from it?

SPEAKER_03

No, I I got it. I saw. Your mother loves it. I have eyes. I have eyes. My mom loves me very much.

SPEAKER_00

What the fuck? I'll talk to your mom. If your mom knew you just cut me off when I was trying to explain to you my movie collection, the difference between a 4K and a Blu-ray Kai, I think she would probably have an issue.

SPEAKER_03

I'm looking at it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and she'd be like, You should give Brian the space to, you know, just to talk about his passions.

SPEAKER_03

Um no. He's looking for a sound effect in my ears.

SPEAKER_04

He starts clicking the button. Like before. I even say anything.

SPEAKER_03

It's ridiculous. But yeah, backrooms was really fun. I also thought it was a really good like the the the dinner scene was just so good.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It really was. And his wife and them playing the the therapy game that they're playing in the beginning. Oh my god. And he is like, oh, he's like, I need you to tell me I'm not wrong. That's why I think he murdered her.

SPEAKER_00

It's so good. It really is. And he's just so unreliable. And I like how she doesn't give in to him, you know. Oh, and she just tells him. She's like, absolutely not. You're basically fucked. If you're like, no, you're fucked.

SPEAKER_03

But if you notice at that point, too, when she says, like, basically, all of this is your fault, and I'm not gonna tell you that it's not your fault, that's when he dies.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And I actually kind of feel for him because that's why. Like, that's I think that scene, not that I didn't think his acting was great earlier, but that scene is like what solidified me being like, damn. Oh my god, he wrecks it in that monologue scene and you know, like cries after it's insane. Or cries during it, I should say.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then she's like, she's great too.

SPEAKER_03

And then Kat is just dead in the in the fridge.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, that's another thing because we we don't know what happened to her. Like, we know obviously the kid got, you know, you know, too much blood for that, but we didn't, we never knew what happened to her. And then that's another thing that kind of annoyed me at first. I'm like, why don't we get to see freaking them meet up and go exploring? Right. And then you didn't, you that didn't bother you, right?

SPEAKER_03

I think I said that last week and you were like, no, no, because I almost think that plays into the part of the story where you're you're starting to realize what it is that he's willing to lose. So you kind of start to understand where his mental space is, as he's like willing to sacrifice other people, essentially, because he didn't know what this was.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And that's why I like it. It's like done from like a realistic, you know, like they try to keep it like as grounded as I guess you possibly could in a situation like that. But you know, he brings supplies, he tapes off the uh entrance and the exit, you know, like what we would probably do if we found a role.

SPEAKER_03

Well, and if you remember too, when all of that stuff happened, I think he personally already met the monster. I think that's a theory when he has Kat and um her boyfriend go in. Because if you remember, he come he comes back up and he's like, What is this knot, dude? Because remember, he magically just can't get the knot untied, and he's like, What is this not?

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_03

And he's like, Untie me. I knew he was gonna get and he was just moving like really slow.

SPEAKER_00

You're right. I did think that when I was watching, I'm like, dude, get the freaking knot off him. And didn't he have a knife or something? Like, cut the knot, cut the knife off. Cut the knife off, cut the cut the rope off.

SPEAKER_03

That's what I mean. That's why I think it's kind of like a view into like his mental perspective where he's like, Oh, well, I'm gonna explore these, but not at the cost of myself yet.

SPEAKER_00

Right, like maybe uh use them as like a guinea pig. You know what I mean? Yeah, maybe, maybe not like he didn't know they were gonna die for sure, but almost like, well, let's try, let's try bringing some people with me just in case. Right. You think he saw the monster.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because the entire movie, I just think he's very self-centered, and that's what a lot of the movie is, is he doesn't want to take accountability for anything.

SPEAKER_00

Right. So yeah, even even in the beginning, like when she's like, let's roleplay, and he's like, he's like, all right, and she's like, whatever, like tell me whatever he starts talking about. Obviously, the you know, he goes into the divorce, but what does he say before he starts telling the story? Oh, he's like, in it's my house. All right, it's my fucking house. I paid for it, just so we just so we're clear. Yeah, it is my house. Before it even starts. That's why I think he kills her.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's why I think he killed his wife or girlfriend or fiancee or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna look that up. And what you just said about them the him seeing them or knowing that monster exists before he goes back in. That that's kind of interesting. I'm gonna look that up and see if it's on Reddit. Yeah, I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

That's just a theory that I've had since like Oh, that's uh that's interesting. There's a lot to since unpacking it, but that's I think there's a lot to unpack there.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, there's a that's another one that I like when we uh like watched it, I I really enjoyed like watching it, but then like even like days and now I don't know, not even two weeks, I like it even more. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's what I'm excited. I'm excited for it to come out.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and he's definitely gonna do a sequel. He said he Parsons said the only way he feels like he could fully flesh out that story and end it is if they allowed him to do like a TV series. He said he'd have to do like a 10-part like TV series to like fully like do the whole thing.

SPEAKER_03

So it'd be like low-key, like a channel zero sort of something like that.

SPEAKER_00

Speaking of channel zero, I love channel zero god so well done, and nobody talks about it.

SPEAKER_03

No, and American Horror Stories just become like a porno.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I was such a f I loved American Horror Story.

SPEAKER_03

The first I'd say like five seasons, gold. Yeah, so good.

SPEAKER_00

Asylum, freak show, murder house, coven was also good.

SPEAKER_03

And Hotel. I really enjoyed Hotel. I think you told me you didn't.

SPEAKER_00

Was it you? No, I like Hotel. Oh, okay. I like I mean, hotel's not uh like my favorite. There's a lot of things.

SPEAKER_03

If you rewatch it, I think you'd really enjoy it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'll I actually started re-watching. I got like a couple months ago, I started rewatching American Horror Story. I got as far as Freak Show. Oh, I love Freak Show. That one's my favorite.

SPEAKER_03

Freak Show is my favorite. I love circus themed stuff. I like clowns.

SPEAKER_00

I do too. I always say I've been a soccer for like creepy circus shit. I always have. I mean, it's just I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. But channel zero is awesome, and it's like it's um literally, I I mean, there's not many seasons. There's what four.

SPEAKER_00

There's four. That's it.

SPEAKER_03

Four seasons.

SPEAKER_00

So every season is gold. Do what do you have a favorite out of those four?

SPEAKER_03

No end house.

SPEAKER_00

I love no end house. I really do. But if I think if I had to pick, it would be no. Wait. There's Candle Clove, Candle Cove, No End House is the one. Yeah. No End House is the second one. Butcher's Block is the third one, and then the Dream Door. Wait, is Dream Door the one in the basement? Yeah. Wait, who my favorite is the one with Pepper Jack or whatever.

SPEAKER_03

Pepper Cracker Jack. Cracker Jack. Whatever his name is. I don't know what his name is.

SPEAKER_00

That's the Dream Door. I love that. I think it's so well done. I really do.

SPEAKER_03

It was really good.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Still enjoyed No End House more.

SPEAKER_00

I like No End House.

SPEAKER_03

I enjoyed all of them, but No End House, like really because I just remember watching that in the entire time. I was like, what the fuck?

SPEAKER_00

That's the one they like go in, like the black, it's like the black house, but then every and then they're in the neighborhood. But it's it's kind of like her life. It's kind of like her dad is still alive.

SPEAKER_03

That's why I like it. Yeah, very so good.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, before we get off backrooms, what movie did I recommend to you that you're gonna watch and we're gonna talk about when you watch it? Oh wait, you've already seen it. Never mind.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Session nine. We were talking about it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So what was the other one that you told me though? You gave me another, was it Keeper?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, watch Keeper. Yeah. Keeper I liked, um, but I will say it's very meandering. The first uh, and I love the director, uh, but I just the the the the ending is batshit crazy. The last 10 minutes I was grinning ear to ear for the creature effects alone, but how we get there I can't forgive because it's boring.

SPEAKER_03

Um I'll have to watch it.

SPEAKER_00

And I was a big fan. It's the long legs director.

SPEAKER_03

Let me in now.

SPEAKER_00

And imagine you go out with your daughter and it's snowing or whatever, and uh you're like making a snowman in your front yard, and some guy just walks up to you and you say, Hey sir, uh, what are you doing talking to my daughter? And he starts singing that to you. You know? Let me in.

SPEAKER_03

Or you have to die. Not gonna lie. His life might have to come to a close.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

I would just be uh You might have to be led in to I would be somewhere else.

SPEAKER_00

I would be afraid. But I that movie's really good though. It's really well done. Yeah. It's like to rewatch that again. It was good. I think I've seen it twice now.

SPEAKER_03

I think it was like a good like modern day silence of the lambs.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Those serial current movies are like really hard to do. Have you ever seen a House that Jack Del? Yes. Have you really? Yeah. What do you think about that?

SPEAKER_03

Um there's parts where I'm really into it, but I don't know. People like really, really love that movie. And I had to stop it and start it multiple times. Like I'd have to like pause it, get in the headspace for it, and like restart it. I still thought it was really good.

SPEAKER_00

I know what you mean by by like headspace, because I have to be like if I'm I don't know, it depends like what the movie, but I have to be like in a certain like mood. Yeah. You know what I mean? It's like a serious movie. I have to like, I don't know, like I don't know, like ground yourself. I don't know. Yeah. I want to like take it in how I want to like I want to receive it, you know. If I'm like having a bad night, I'm not gonna watch a movie. Yeah. I liked it though. I did like it. Speaking of, Osgood Perkins fucking produced backrooms. He was a producer. I didn't even know that. I just saw that.

SPEAKER_03

Oh well, there you go.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah. So let's get into the star of this podcast. That's what I'd call it. Um creepy, dude. She's fucking creeps the shit out of me. We're gonna get into that right now.

SPEAKER_03

Why don't you love me like I love you?

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god. I just see that in my nightmares. I really do. I'm ordering a hoodie, by the way.

SPEAKER_03

An obsession hoodie.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I like that. I love that movie. That was really good.

SPEAKER_00

I I I wouldn't, but I when I saw the hoodie, I think the Cynologue is doing the the uh collab with like NBC or whatever, the main production company. Um but it looks like really good. And I just I saw it the other day and it's like it's got the uh wishing, what is it called? The Willow. One wish willow. Yeah, it's got that on the front, and on the back it says like I wish for a billion dollars. It's got like a bunch of little wishes. Yeah, like I wish for a million dollars, I wish for her to love me. And it looks really it's like done in like red. I'll show it to you. It's it's fire. Tough to see it. Yeah, I it's pre-order, I don't think it ships till uh July, but it's uh I had to. But yeah, obsession. I mean, for sure, out of the for this episode, out of all these movies that we've seen recently, um, if I had to pick one, I would and obsessions or I'm sorry, backrooms is a close second. Um it's there's so much for backrooms. There's like so much stuff.

SPEAKER_03

I think they're just completely like different. They are, they're just so different, completely different.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but again, if I had to pick a favorite, just because I've seen them, and not that I'm comparing them in any, just because they're both 2026 you know, horror movies of the year, um, I'd have to say obsession. I would win a little bit for me over backrooms. Okay. Also, I like the I like the feel of it. It's very bleak, it's very dark. I also like how he does this thing called that's actually a term for it. It's called, and I don't know if you've ever heard of it, it's called uncanny value. Yeah. You have. Yes. Okay. Explain to me, what do you think that is?

SPEAKER_03

Um, it's basically like you looking at a person, but they don't necessarily there's something off about them.

SPEAKER_00

Correct. Yeah. It's like basically like it's like you.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god, that's stupid. That was well planned.

SPEAKER_00

Anyway, got them. Um, but no, you're right. It's uh it's essentially it's like on Kenny Valley. It's like, you know, it's like a a realist or it's like something that you like it's a common thing, like a human or like your friend, but they're they don't look all the way normal.

SPEAKER_03

Um like the theory of like skinwalkers or like um doppelgangers.

SPEAKER_00

And like that's why, like uh, okay, the first or the second night when she goes over. We were talking about it. Remember, she she um she goes back to his house the first night, and then the second night she goes.

SPEAKER_03

Was it the second? I don't know if it was the second night, but I do know what you're talking about when he was on the phone and she was just like walking back and forth outside, and then finally she knocks.

SPEAKER_00

Correct, and and though it it's weird because like the porch lights on, but it's behind her, so you don't she's still in the shadow, and you kind of see the glisten of her eyes, and I don't know. And it was really weird, really weird. It was really weird, really well done. Yeah, it was almost like you didn't know if there was an effect, but you're like, what the fuck is going on?

SPEAKER_03

Well, and you're also like, okay, is this gonna like escalate quicker than I think it's going to escalate? Like, what's happening?

SPEAKER_00

I just I thought it was really well done. So, a little background, another young guy, Curry Barker. Um, he's part of uh one half of a sketch comedy YouTube duo called or YouTube channel called That's a Bad Idea, uh with Cooper Tomlinson, who played uh what's his name? Bears, yeah, Ian. He played Ian Bear or uh Barron, they call him Bear in the movie, the main guy. He's uh you know, his he plays his best friend in the movie.

SPEAKER_03

Wait a damn second. They called him Bear in the movie. Yeah, they called him Bear in the movie. Think about this.

SPEAKER_00

Horseshik, Kaiya's got something.

SPEAKER_03

I got something. This movie is kind of about like it has a lot of strong undertones about domestic violence and the relationship, I guess, with or just like the toxicity of certain relationships. Um, his nickname is Bear. And if you haven't realized, like over the past like two years, it'd be like, would you choose him or the bear? Bear.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, okay. That's a that's a good that's deep. That's deep thinking right there. We're gonna have to look into that.

SPEAKER_03

It's probably not true, but it fits.

SPEAKER_00

It does fit. It does fit. It's not like super uh, I don't know if it's super off cuff, but I don't know. It wouldn't surprise me. But yeah, I mean Curry Barker and another thing, we thought we touched on this, unfortunately, that didn't record again. Um, he he did a short that we saw several years ago, The Chair. Yes, and that's that's awesome.

SPEAKER_03

It was really good, really well done.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's on YouTube. You can watch it on YouTube.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So type in the chair short horror film, you'll find it on YouTube. It's great. And I think that's uh no, that's I mean, he got some notice for that, but and then he directed uh Curry Barker, the director of Obsession, directed a uh excuse me, his uh Sean Los Los Angeles and um he did his first feature length was called Milk and Serial 2024. It's a uh found footage serial killer movie. Filmed it, cost eighteen or eighteen, eight hundred dollars, couldn't get financing for it, released it again for free on YouTube, and that's what led to his now film figure deal and uh you know making films for one of the biggest production companies and has Blumhouse behind him now and just came out with uh probably what's gonna be close, if not the horror movie of the year. Yeah, you know what I mean? In obsession. And we still have a few months left, but um that's a strong contender for me. It's very well done. Small cast, everybody kills it. Uh there's not a lot of in and that's another thing. The girl in the Navaret, uh Nikki, she wrecks it. She wrecks it. So good. I mean, just yeah, let's talk about some scenes. I mean uh the rewind scene when they're in the that's probably like the one that second most creeps me out. Um do you know what I'm talking about? Where she walks backwards? Yeah, well she w she walks backwards a couple times, or she does some odd odd uh walks. But yeah, she does she not only she walks backwards, but she makes the sound. He's like talking to her, and she's like he's like, You're scaring me, and she's like and then she goes in the kitchen and again she's in the dark, yeah, and then she's like, I would never hurt you, and she flinches at him like like Debo. Yeah, she goes like that. I'm like, what the fuck? Yeah, yeah, that scared me. And he's like, You're scaring me, and he looks terrified.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but I also think a lot of the themes of the movie again have to do with like I guess just kind of like like there's a lot of hints to I guess domestic violence and like toxicity in relationships. I mean, he quite literally sexually assaults her, that's very obvious.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and they do a good job because he does play the nice guy, even just the looks, but he doesn't right, he's not, but I'm saying he does a good job of you know, not at first you think he's innocent, not coming across as this asshole, but you're right, it's like she's even his friends, like you know, like this doesn't look good. He's like, dude, you're like she's kind of going through something, you're like taking it advantage of her. He's like, fuck you, that's not fair. And you can always tell, like, when he starts saying stuff to her to Nikki, like in the beginning, and he's like, This isn't right, like you know, with the whatever the cat, like, this is what are you doing?

SPEAKER_03

This is not right, and she's and then like she'll like seduce him and they'll have sex, and then he's like, not you know, he doesn't yeah, like he's just very quick to be like, Oh, well, yeah, I can see that there's clearly something off with her, yeah, but this is not working for what I'm wanting, so I'm just going to put her on the back burner and only care about myself. I mean, let's talk about the scene where he gets up in the middle of the night and she's like, Hey, bear, it's me. Can you please just kill me?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's the real her, right? Yeah, yeah. That's creepy too.

SPEAKER_03

And he just continues walking.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. He doesn't care. That reminds me of that part specifically, and probably nobody's seen this. This is like 2016. I actually have it pulled up. It's called Let Her Out. It's uh it's a Canadian movie. Uh, this girl, she's like a bike courier, just like really pretty girl with black hair. Uh looks very similar to this girl, but she has like a bike, she's a big she drives like a mountain bike and delivers packages. A cyclist, a cyclist, uh, a bike courier they call it. But yeah, she uh she has a traumatic accident and like her uh I don't know, something happens where they have to like give her part of the skin of somebody else on her leg and something weird. And then she ends up having like it's called Letter Out, and it's basically she has like another version of herself trying to get out of her. And it's it's it's well it's well done. Okay, it it's it's I don't know. I I don't think obsession borrowed anything from it, but it's it's it has some similarities as far as the character's concerned. Um but yeah, even he has the he has the ability at the end to get out of it. Or he doesn't, but he thinks he does when he calls he calls the uh one wish will a hotline.

SPEAKER_03

And well that wasn't at the end. No, that was more so like the middle, and he still continues to go on.

SPEAKER_00

Right, even more so. So right, middle, and then he's like, he calls and he thinks because the guy eludes, like uh, you know, whatever, trying to cancel is like, Oh, would you like a cancellation?

SPEAKER_03

He goes, No, I don't want a cancellation, I just want to alter it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then he asks, like, could I actually cancel? And the guy's like, Well, no, but he's like, You just said I could.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he said, Well, you like basically explains the terms, like he basically has to kill himself, and at the end, you can see that there's just this thing has just gotten so out of hand, and he still can't do it. Still can't do it, like he still just can't help everyone else around him. So the question really begs is he obsessed with her? Dude, yeah, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, which I think, yes, yeah, you know, without without a curse.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Because who would do that in the most uh toxic, rudimentary of ways.

SPEAKER_03

But doesn't he say that in the movie? Like, doesn't he say that in the beginning? Like, if you remember the dining scene, we'll have to look that up, like what he says. But I think he's like, Nikki, I just I'm like he has like this whole speech, and he's just like, I'm I'm obsessed with you, or like so he uses some words.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know if he uses that.

SPEAKER_03

I don't think he uses that dialogue, but he's basically just saying, like, oh, and I've ever since I laid my eyes on you, and blah blah blah. And she's very clearly just like not into it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's just um it's the they first of all, they do a good job of while she's yes, very pretty, they do a good job of you know, it's like these four kids, they work in a record store, it's a very small cast, they do it very well of like keeping it kind of grounded, you know what I mean? Like, other than yeah, they make a wish and all this crazy shit happens, but it's like this is what would happen if somebody became obsessed with you and had to become obsessed with you and didn't have a choice.

SPEAKER_03

Well, if they love you more than anyone in the entire world, right?

SPEAKER_00

And that's and that's essentially what it was. But it's that's another thing that I loved. Uh the scene you just brought up when he's trying to sneak to see his friend at night, and she starts talking to him as Nikki. Um, I was thinking, man, I wish we would have got more scenes of Nikki maybe trying to cry out, but I think that's what makes it well. You've got it on the phone, right? You got it on the phone, and then you get in the bedroom. And I was thinking after I said that last week, I'm like, you know, maybe it's maybe it's better that they didn't do that a lot. Because I think those couple scenes I think you got a third one though.

SPEAKER_03

There was three, because if you remember when she was at that party, at one point she like randomly gets up and like doesn't she like scream or something? And they're like, What the fuck? Well, yeah, before before the whole weird speech. She like, if you remember and she's like, Oh, I'm so sorry, guys.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, you're right, that does happen. But it's like, I don't know. I just it's I don't know, man. It's uh it's a trip how she she acts, and that um what's the other one? Oh, at night when she's got the plant in front of her face and she just walks, she goes back in the corner. That was the same scene. No, no, no. I'm talking about a different one. I'm talking about he's in front of the door. This is the scene I was talking about. He's in front of the door, you can see the duct tape on the door. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's on the floor, and she's you know, over there talking to him. Yeah. And that's when she they're like mid-conversation. Yeah, it's not like intense, really. Yeah. And she just goes, Yeah, yeah. And then, like, yeah, that's in like the kitchen living room. This scene is the bedroom at night.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Where she goes back in the corner and then takes the pot.

SPEAKER_03

There's still some moments though where I feel like, I mean, as anybody, I was going to say as a woman, but truly, like, just as anybody that's ever been through anything like that, there's like some scenes in that movie that I think just makes you like sad almost like when you're watching her stand by the door and she's there all day and she literally like like throws up on herself and like peas on herself because she's waiting for him all day.

SPEAKER_00

I meant to say this last week. I was thinking that I thought they were gonna go in the direction that she looked like that because it was more so how do I describe it? Like when he left her, she almost became sick. I thought that's what they were gonna, that's why she looked like that.

SPEAKER_03

No, it was just the obsession was so deep. And like, again, like I just think it goes back to like looking at I guess the the mental state of people in these like really, really toxic situations or relationships of whatever sort where like you're almost debilitated because you don't know what to do, right? And you now rely on this person essentially to live your life. Yeah, so she's just waiting for him.

SPEAKER_00

And people do get like and it's so sad, yeah. Like they like you don't like when you're in a relationship like that, or you know, like the like she doesn't see life outside of that. No, and that's it. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_03

Like if you remember when he's like, Oh, I'm gonna I'm gonna go out today with my friends, like it's there's parts where you're like, Okay, this is funny, but then if you like really look at like the deeper part of it, it's like, oh, this is really sad.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So like I think it it it's a great movie because it gives you different you're feeling everything as you're watching it, and I think that's what makes it so great.

SPEAKER_00

And it's and yeah, there's definitely parts like obviously we saw in a theater, and there's definitely parts like obviously there's you know, there's some comedic parts, yes, but it's not a funny movie. No, it's not by the absurdity of the situation. Maybe you don't know how to react to what you're seeing on screen. So you're laughing. So you're laughing, yeah. Um, because you don't know, like the reaction of most people when she slinked back in the corner in the bedroom, I think were creeped out. I heard a lot of guys go, Oh hell shit, oh hell no. One guy behind me, oh hell no.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, because what the fuck is happening?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like it was like just a reaction, it was like a natural reaction everything in the theater, like it wasn't a laugh, it was like more so just like a everybody kind of like gasped in like a certain way.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, like what is happening? What?

SPEAKER_00

Oh hell, like of every it was it was a cool thing to see because I'm like that's another thing. Like I like seeing certain movies with um a crowd if they're not super fucking annoying and they talk on their phone or something like that. Yes, you know, if you have a good if you have a good crowd and I think we did fun. I thought that was a good crowd for that movie for obsession. Fuck yeah, I thought that was really good. Yeah, no, I I I just really liked Obsession. I really did. I I liked it, and that's another one. Same thing with backrooms. Like I liked it the night we saw it, Stephanie Happy. I was like, holy shit, like the ending was so well done. Romeo and Juliet. I did look, I was thinking to myself, I wish they showed her walking down the street. Yeah, you know what I mean? Just like because you like I don't know, I didn't want to see like a wrap-up because she really did that shit. Oh, there's no wrap-up people she'd be in prison. She's in prison, so you don't want to you don't want to see a wrap-up in that movie. You it ended how it should have ended.

SPEAKER_03

I just so like he still essentially through his obsession would have ruined her life.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. Yeah, yeah, through both of their obsessions with each other. But it was almost like at the end, she cracks the one-wish willow. Yeah, and you know, they're they're essentially both obsessed and in love with each other at the end. Yeah, he had already taken the um he had already taken the pills, and the reason he can't puke up the pills is because he's mid trying to puke up the pills, and that's when she cracks the one-wish willow.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So I don't know, in a sense, she kills him, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, whatever that was. Whatever that was, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because it definitely wasn't her.

SPEAKER_00

No, and that's another thing. You don't ever know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, you don't really get a back story, but in this, it's like I'm almost not really disappointed. Like with Hokum, you're like, oh, I want a backstory, I didn't get anything. No, it's with this. I feel like it was just so well done that you're just kind of like, oh, it'd be nice to know, but I'm cool if I don't.

SPEAKER_00

Sure. Yeah, I agree. And like you you would want to see, like it was more so you're just so like you're just create like you're so caught up in just like witnessing her almost, like witnessing her transformation and what she's gonna do next, and and see how he's gonna react and how their friends are gonna react to it. That I mean, yeah, I would have liked a little backstory, like, what the fuck? They got a number and somebody actually answers. Right.

SPEAKER_03

And it's just it's there's not even the basement. Right. It's not even like a call number where it's like, please press one. The guy answers and he just goes, Hello. And yeah, he's like, There's no like thank you for calling.

SPEAKER_00

He's like, I want to make a uh change to my wish.

SPEAKER_03

And the guy's like, well, if you remember, the guy was being like or he was being like super casual because he goes, Hello, and the guy's like, Hey, what's up?

SPEAKER_04

And he's like, um, well, hey, I bought this thing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, he didn't like know what to say because he's like uh he probably was like shocked somebody answered anyways, right? And it's almost like it's like how how do you make a five foot two hundred and fifteen pound girl scary?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, they did it though, but they did it, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

There's no there's no demon possession. Um there's something, but that's another I think that's something that makes it creepier. Yeah, we don't know what it is. Is it her evil what is it? What is it? Isn't it it's an entity of some sort? Yeah, it's something, but it's you never know what it is, you never get close to it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, you don't know, you don't really know, like, but you know it's not her because again, like with like the little shots of like her eyes, or when she's in the corner, you're like, what the fuck is that? Yeah, because it's not her, just that.

SPEAKER_00

The the I don't know, the frown dark yes, I'm so glad you said that. That was it's crazy. So she's they're playing spin the bottle, and no, they're not playing spin the bottle. I'm sorry, what are they playing? Jenga. They're playing Jenga. When you pull the piece of Jenga, there's something and it says what you have to do. Yes. So Bear, but does Bear pull it?

SPEAKER_03

No.

SPEAKER_00

Her friend pulls it, the girl pulls it and says, kiss the person to the no, no, bear pulls it. Eve pulls that, it says, kiss the person to your left. And there's a couple seconds go by, and then the camera goes to her, and it's not a pissed-off look, it's a very weird, sad look. And she basically has this exaggerated frown, and it's so exaggerated, like a five-year-old would make. Like, picture if you were like like a four-year-old, like you took their candy away, yeah, and they were like sad. That's like the face she made, but like exaggerated. And she moves the girl's chair, physically pulls it back, and then squats down next to him, and then like makes a kissing face, like, all right, go ahead. I mean, it was insane.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'm just kidding, guys. And everyone's like, Oh, yeah, they're like, Oh, go, wait, okay, yeah. So that's what it was. It wasn't that she was screaming. If you remember, she makes the kissing face, and then that happens, and she's like, I'm just kidding, guys, haha. And she gets up and she fucking slams her head on the table because that was like a second where Nikki was actually there.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, that's right. I forgot about that. Yeah, that's crazy.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, such a good movie. It really was such a good movie.

SPEAKER_00

I just thought it was I yeah, I knew I was gonna like it because I talked to like people that are like, I don't know, I can get it. Brian talked to himself. That's probably the voices. Yeah, well, most likely it was. Yeah. I don't know. I did like it. I thought it was so so good. I can't wait to see both those backrooms and obsession. Again, yeah. Again. For sure.

SPEAKER_03

All right. That's good. Wow.

SPEAKER_00

No. Um, I am getting theme. We are gonna get theme music. No um Kaya. Listen, I can just bitch snip this shit out of you. All right, all right. Anyways, that's it. Um, we'll have this out, obviously. Um episode 2.5, I guess. Because Kaya screwed up the audio.

SPEAKER_03

I didn't. Um I didn't. I if you notice though, I did not diss Brian because I don't know how to use computers and this fucking Fisher price board. So it's fine that he fucked up. I didn't say that. Yeah. It's it's the beginning.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's the beginning. But I mean it was like it sucked because we recorded a whole episode and then like didn't. But the fan don't you can do that. You can do that, you can hit this.

SPEAKER_04

Oh shit.

SPEAKER_00

This is uh 25% overdone. And that's that. These are all pre uh pre-s. Oh, that's a good one. No, wait a minute. I am so excited. One of these days, Kyle, I'll let you you can do this. You can be the producer. We gotta end the podcast. Kaya's getting out of hand. She does this at the end. She realizes she has a microphone in front of her and can't help herself. So um, that's it. Kaya, we'll be back next week.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, bro.

SPEAKER_00

Um episode 2.5 or 2.5, whatever you want to call it. Maybe one day we'll get the lost up. Actually, it's just a duplicate. It's just a shittier version. It's never gonna come out. A random it's a shittier version of this space. We're never gonna get it. This is better. We're never gonna get it. Onward and upward.
