The Leadership Shift
Honest conversations about what it really takes to lead at the next level.
Leadership isn't something people should have to figure out alone.
The Leadership Shift is a fortnightly podcast hosted by Caroline Huffam and Corinne Hollidge, founders of Synergy for Growth — and your honest guide to what it really takes to lead at the next level.
Every episode explores the realities of leadership in today's world. The complexity. The pressure. The uncertainty. And the conversations that don't always happen openly enough — because too many leaders are performing successfully on the surface whilst quietly carrying the weight of it all behind the scenes.
Because here's what we know from years of working with leaders across organisations and sectors: leadership isn't simply about delivering outcomes. It's about creating the conditions in which people can contribute, collaborate, and succeed together. And making that shift — from operational success to strategic leadership — is one of the most significant transitions any leader will face.
Across five core themes, we explore what that shift really looks like:
Leadership Transition — why stepping up is harder than it looks, and how to navigate it successfully
Human-Centred and Commercially Grounded Leadership — because people and performance are not competing priorities
Embedded Development — leadership isn't learned in theory; it's learned in the reality of the role
Sustainable Leadership — because leaders shouldn't have to lose themselves in order to succeed
Leading Through Uncertainty — creating clarity and confidence even when you don't have all the answers
Whether you're stepping into greater responsibility, leading through change, or supporting leadership development inside your organisation — this podcast is for you.

Before diving into the series, Caroline Huffam and Corinne Hollidge take a moment to introduce themselves, share the story behind The Leadership Shift, and set out what listeners can expect.
In this opening conversation, they explore why leadership feels different today, why so many capable leaders are performing successfully on the surface whilst quietly carrying the weight of it behind the scenes and why they felt compelled to create a space for the conversations that don't always happen openly enough.
They also introduce the five themes running through the series: Leadership Transition, Human-Centred and Commercially Grounded Leadership, Embedded Development, Sustainable Leadership, and Leading Through Uncertainty.

Welcome to the Leadership Show.
SPEAKER_01I'm Caroline Hopkins. And I'm Corinne Collins. And we're the founders of the crypto.
SPEAKER_00This podcast is Leaders Navigating Increasing Complexity Responsibility of Survey. Leaders often surface. Leadership. Because leadership isn't something people should figure out alone. This is the Leadership Shift. Welcome to the Leadership Shift. Our first episode is a little bit different because before we dive into the themes we'll be exploring throughout the series, we wanted to spend some time sharing why we've created this podcast and what our listeners can expect from it.
SPEAKER_01So over the years, both of us have worked with leaders across a range of organizations and sectors. And we found ourselves having the same conversations again and again. Conversations about leadership, about change, about confidence, about uncertainty, and about the reality of leading people in increasingly complex environments.
SPEAKER_00And we realized that many of those conversations weren't happening openly enough. So what we wanted to do was create a space where we could share what we're observing, what we're learning, and hopefully provide some practical insights that help leaders feel a little less alone.
SPEAKER_01So let's start with us. We've known each other for a long time now. I'm not going to say how long. Caroline, how would you describe our journey?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, as you say, we've known each other for a really long time, and we've worked together over many years in many different roles, with our paths crossing in a variety of different occasions and experiences. But through that time together, we have worked with a multitude of different leaders and leadership styles, as well as leading ourselves and others in different roles. But we've coalesced over the last 15 years around coaching and leadership development, which is for both of us our absolute passions. What we've learned through the time that we've we've worked together is that we both share the same values and understanding around the challenges and impact of leadership. And we know through the work that we have done in partnership together, just how hard it is to lead with vulnerability, openness, and courage. And that is what we bring to our work together in how we work with how we support the leaders that we do.
SPEAKER_01One thing I suppose I'm often reflecting about uh in our work is that most leadership businesses are are built on expertise, but in many ways, ours and our relationship and our business has been built through that relationship.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. And and this is how Synergy for Growth was born, really. It's founded on honesty and openness, partnership, challenge and support, and in turn creating deep levels of trust.
SPEAKER_01And actually, when you think about it, Caroline, in many ways that shaped how we think about leadership.
SPEAKER_00So one of the reasons that we wanted to create this podcast is because leadership feels different today than it did five years ago.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. What we're seeing in leaders right now is increasing complexity, they've got the whole AI aspects to think about and incorporate into their leadership. They are working under often extreme pressure and major uncertainty with always, but I think it's sort of um riled it up a little bit more, competing priorities. They're also managing what seems to be continuous change, and all of that is taking an emotional load on them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I think one of the things that we've both noticed is that many leaders are, you know, performing successfully on the surface. You know, they're showing up, they're doing a great job, they're you know meeting the targets, they're hitting the performance requirements. Yet what we meet time and time again in our coaching capacity is that they're quietly holding a huge amount behind the scenes. And they're being asked to influence across organizations. You know, many organizations that we've worked with are global organizations, they're being expected to think strategically and as you've said, lead through the complex change that they're experiencing. Yet much of their success has been built on delivery, on the expertise that they've created over the years.
SPEAKER_01And that for me brings us to one of the ideas that we're going to keep coming back to throughout this series, and that is that leadership isn't simply about delivering those outcomes, it's actually just as much about creating the conditions that allow people to contribute, to collaborate, and essentially succeed together.
SPEAKER_00And that's often the bridge between operational leadership and strategic leadership. Operational leaders drive the work, strategic leaders create the conditions in which great work can happen.
SPEAKER_01When we were thinking about this podcast, what we realized was that there were basically five themes that sit underneath pretty much every leadership conversation we have and are having. The first of those themes is leadership transition, and that is the shift from being successful in one role to succeeding in the next level of leadership.
SPEAKER_00The second theme that we've uncovered is this idea of you know human-centered leadership and commercially grounded leadership. There's often an expectation that these two are separate things, but actually they are deeply connected because people and performance are not competing priorities. Absolutely not.
SPEAKER_01And the third is embedded development. Leadership isn't learnt in theory, it isn't learnt in the classroom, it's actually learnt in the reality of the role.
SPEAKER_00Our fourth theme is about sustainable leadership. It's our belief that leaders shouldn't have to lose themselves in order to be successful.
SPEAKER_01And the final theme, the fifth theme, is leading through uncertainty. Helping leaders create that clarity and the confidence, even when they don't have um all the answers.
SPEAKER_00These are the themes that we'll be bringing to you over our podcast series.
SPEAKER_01So who do we hope will listen to us then, Caroline?
SPEAKER_00So our intention behind creating this podcast is it's for all leaders at all stages of their journey, but particularly those who are stepping into greater responsibility, those that are navigating change with different levels of complexity, those that are leading teams or about to lead teams, and those trying to influence without authority. Ultimately, this podcast is for anyone interested in creating healthier cultures, stronger relationships, and more connected teams.
SPEAKER_01So thank you for joining us for our first conversation. We hope that it's given you a sense of who we are, what we care about, and why we've created the leadership shift.
SPEAKER_00And in our next episode, we're going to explore our very first theme: leadership transition, with the question of why leadership feels harder than it used to. We'll be discussing why so many capable leaders find themselves struggling when they step into more senior roles and why what made them successful in the past often isn't enough at the next level, and what leaders and organisations can do to navigate that transition more successfully.
SPEAKER_01Before then, we would love to hear your feedback on today's episode and to hear what leadership challenges you are seeing most often right now.
