that Buddhists pass down and to describe sort of the universe, right? 00:14:52.879 --> 00:14:55.440 Or their ways to understand their faith. 00:14:55.840 --> 00:15:01.679 We have those two, right, in us break the idols of our life. 00:19:49.680 --> 00:20:01.119 Like part of being on the way with Jesus and moving down this path are finding the idols that distract us from following God. 00:20:01.599 --> 00:20:03.920 You've heard me talk about this before. 00:20:04.160 --> 00:20:11.119 You know, you we can call them wealth, we can call them power, we can call them fame, we can call them pleasure, mammon. 00:20:11.359 --> 00:20:22.000 There's all kinds of names for the things that we sacrifice ourselves at the altar of, hoping that it's gonna provide us with life and comfort. 00:20:22.319 --> 00:20:24.160 But they're false promises. 00:20:24.960 --> 00:20:25.680 We know that. 00:20:25.839 --> 00:20:36.640 We know we can get a bunch of wealth and a bunch of power and build a big castle and 00:20:48.079 And then we just find out that we're sitting in that castle and we're drinking too much and we're lonely and we're miserable and we're depressed and we're isolated, and all the things that we thought we could protect ourselves from didn't work. 00:20:48.400 --> 00:20:51.519 Anybody sacrificed themselves to that belief before? 00:20:53.279 --> 00:21:02.880 So part of what Jesus does is he points out the idols, like scripture, when we engage it, says, where am I putting my energy? 00:21:03.039 --> 00:21:07.039 Where am I making sacrifices that aren't leading me to life? 00:21:07.200 --> 00:21:09.039 And that's helpful, isn't it? 00:21:09.440 --> 00:21:16.240 That we share stories about when we kind of get off the path and we're like, that's not helpful, that's not second temple. 00:21:47.599 --> 00:21:50.160 I thought, wow, that's really interesting. 00:21:51.359 --> 00:21:59.599 Jesus doesn't only break the idols of our life, Jesus invites us to break the out and who was good and who was bad, and that helped me make sense of my world. 00:23:54.160 --> 00:24:03.599 In fact, Richard Rohr, who I love, he's a Franciscan priest, spiritual director, he makes the case that all of us in our life of faith have to go through that. 00:24:04.000 --> 00:24:06.400 Like, there's no going around it. 00:24:06.720 --> 00:24:10.799 We all have to go through the black come up and say, you know, I had a relationship. 00:25:18.400 --> 00:25:25.440 I had relationships, and one in particular, that, gosh, at one point it was just so life-giving, and it was so beautiful. and it it like saved me, and then it wasn't anymore, and it became this thing that was really harmful for me and my relationships, and and the process of breaking away that icon, that beautiful thing,
