this concept of just loving God by reminding us that above all the rules, above all the laws, the one most important commandment is to love God with all of your heart, with all of your being, and with 00:13:51.279 --> 00:14:09.840 So in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus is in Judea teaching, and the elders, the Jewish elders, the Pharisees, have asked him to comment on this adultery and divorce topic because, well, it's relatively prevalent in the royal houses of Judea, apparently, Herod's wife and things like that. 00:14:10.240 --> 00:14:13.840 Now, they probably really don't care much about what Jesus has to say. 00:14:13.919 --> 00:14:23.120 They're really just trying to get him embroiled in some political drama so that the government comes and takes him away and they get to wash their hands of him without worrying about him. 00:14:25.039 --> 00:14:35.919 And so the Pharisees ask Jesus this question, and he responds in typical Jesus fashion, saying, Well, what do you think? 00:14:36.000 --> 00:14:37.120 He's a good teacher, right? 00:14:37.279 --> 00:14:38.000 What do you think? 00:14:38.159 --> 00:14:42.639 And they throw him, um they throw him some Jewish law from Deuteronomy. 00:15:03.759 And this is our first window into probably what Jesus is telling us, because the word in Greek, scleracardia, means hardness of heart, and that's a compound word. 00:15:03.919 --> 00:15:09.360 Sclera being scar tissue, damage, and cardia being heart. 00:15:09.600 --> 00:15:14.960 But in the scriptures, heart in Greek never means that pumpy thing in our chest. 00:15:15.519 --> 00:15:20.480 Cardia is said to be the center of our spiritual being. 00:15:21.759 --> 00:15:28.559 It is what is born of God and God breathed into each and every one of us. 00:15:32.639 --> 00:15:52.320 Now, I would like to take a bit of poetic license and share with you that my view of this story is a story about children and divorce, about broken relationships, and about teach about Jesus as a teacher and as a protector of small children, a father figure. 00:15:52.960 --> 00:16:23.039 And I believe this is an opportunity for us to look at and examine our roles as protectors of small children and our relationships with one another and with God as we think about and feel our way into our role as instruments of God's grace and as leaders in the church and as students of Christ. 00:16:25.360 --> 00:16:28.320 So the Pharisees are trying to put Jesus in a box. 00:16:28.480 --> 00:16:30.720 They're trying to make God a rule. 00:16:31.679 --> 00:16:38.559 And Jesus thing that we can count on. 00:16:55.840 --> 00:17:12.559 And herein lies the mystery of God and our opportunity to deepen our relationship with our Creator through prayer, revelation, and love. Adam, he creates Eve, life. 00:17:46.559 --> 00:17:54.960 So we could start to rephrase what we read in Mark today, what we heard in Mark, and say that in the beginning, God created human life. 00:17:55.519 --> 00:18:01.200 And then the passage goes on to talk about man leaving his mother and father and marrying his wife. 00:18:01.359 --> 00:18:05.839 Now, these are the words that we hear today, with our point of view in our 21st century. 00:18:06.880 --> 00:18:11.440 Two thousand years ago, my guess is that that was heard differently. 00:18:11.759 --> 00:18:25.359 These words in Greek were understood as we believe them today to be understood, as things like to leave, to cast off, to leave behind, to walk away from, to put something down. 00:18:26.640 --> 00:18:32.480 To join, to love, with that spirit, that Jesus is trying to warm up and soften these Pharisees who have become divorced in their relationship with God. 00:21:15.359 --> 00:21:20.240 That I believe is what Jesus
