00:10:55.919 You've got to give the chief priests and the elders of the people a little bit of credit. 00:10:56.080 --> 00:11:01.919 See, if you read the verses before this, you realize this is Passion Week. 00:11:02.159 --> 00:11:04.159 This is the beginning of Passion Week. 00:11:04.320 --> 00:11:22.799 And in Matthew's gospel, the first thing Jesus does after his triumphal entry into Jerusalem is he goes into the temple, he turns over the tables of the money changers, and he drives out everybody who is selling doves for sacrifice. 00:11:23.759 --> 00:11:44.480 Now, the money changers are the people who change Roman money, which you use everywhere except the temple, into temple money, which is only good in the temple and is the only kind of money that is allowed to be carried into the temple. 00:11:44.639 --> 00:11:59.039 Now, they are very willing to do this because they take a skim sum off the top at the rate of about 50%, so that you can go into the temple and pray. 00:11:59.120 --> 00:12:05.840 In other words, you give them two dollars worth of Roman money and you get one dollar worth of temple money. 00:12:06.080 --> 00:12:20.879 And of course, the ones who own the concession here, the ones who have the franchise, are the chief priests and the ruling families of the temple, the elders of the people. 00:12:21.360 --> 00:12:23.279 It's the same with 00:13:00.399 As a matter of fact, later in the first century, just after Jesus was crucified, in that first century, the son of the famous rabbi Gamaliel led a successful protest against the price gouging of doves. 00:13:00.799 --> 00:13:03.679 They lowered the price by 99%. 00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:09.759 And the people who sold the doves still made money. 00:13:10.080 --> 00:13:12.799 You can see what's going on here. 00:13:13.679 --> 00:13:30.799 Jesus is clearly launching an attack against the financial security, the financial uh uh bounty, I'm gonna say, of the chief priests and the ruling families. 00:13:31.759 --> 00:13:36.240 He goes and he curses a fig tree and it shrivels up. 00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:47.519 The owner of the fig tree is probably not impressed, or at least not favorably impressed, with what Jesus does with his fig tree? 00:13:49.440 --> 00:13:54.000 So they come and they say, by what authority are you doing these things? 00:13:54.639 --> 00:13:59.679 Who told you you could come in here and mess around with our income statement? 00:14:00.799 --> 00:14:08.159 Who told you you could come in here and mess around with the sacrifice rules that we have here cases the word that we translate repentance is metanoia. 00:15:00.399 --> 00:15:01.679 You've heard that many times. 00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:05.440 And it means to turn and choose another path. 00:15:05.679 --> 00:15:13.679 If I'm going to leave the sanctuary, I can go right down the aisle, or I can turn and take another path down this aisle. 00:15:13.759 --> 00:15:15.360 That's metanoia. 00:15:16.559 --> 00:15:28.240 What it usually refers to in philosophical or spiritual discussions has to do with turning your life in a different direction. 00:15:29.440 --> 00:15:52.000 And in this particular case, Matthew does not use the word metanoia, he uses metalothesis, which means to change your mind, to change the way you think, to change the way you're viewing things. 00:15:55.039 --> 00:16:03.120 That's why when Jesus tells the story about the man and the two sons, he says the first son changed his mind. 00:16:03.360 --> 00:16:06.559 He was sorry that he had said no. 00:16:07.679 --> 00:16:11.039 He changed his mind and he went and did what his father wanted. 00:16:11.200 --> 00:16:20.639 That's why Jesus said, Jesus said that John came preaching so that you can change your speak for God is an enormous act of hubris, most of the time, in my opinion. 00:20:07.920 --> 00:20:16.880 The religious authorities claim to speak for God, but when God comes up and slaps them in the
