to Congress that followed this incident. 00:15:09.840 --> 00:15:24.559 One was her, this is Congresswoman AOC, who talked about whether particular language is not only appropriate within Congress, but 00:15:31.600 I'm so sorry your feelings got hurt by what I said. 00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:40.480 That's actually a backhanded slap that says, it's your fault your feelings got hurt, not my fault that I really interesting to watch, this level of dialogue. 00:15:48.639 --> 00:16:00.799 Perhaps, and I grew up hearing it this way, Jesus is saying to the lady, you're supposed to endure no matter what 00:16:21.600 But I want to suggest to you there's a different way to hear the story, and I think it is one that invites us, I think, into transformation that I think is really more about who Jesus is, at least in my own faith journey now. 00:16:23.679 --> 00:16:31.840 What if it is Jesus' response to the woman, not his initial thought that is for us to emulate? 00:16:32.399 --> 00:16:43.279 This may sound a little bit heretical, but I want to suggest to you Jesus calls this woman a dog, and in Greek this is a female dog, and we have a word in English for that. 00:16:43.440 --> 00:16:54.559 It's extremely pejorative and diminutive anytime a man uses that to a woman, because what it does is it separates men from women and puts women always beneath. 00:16:54.720 --> 00:17:07.599 When a man uses that word, the man is demonstrating that he has power over the woman, no matter how educated she is, no matter how arudite her she is, no matter what kind of manner she has. 00:17:07.759 --> 00:17:12.559 This is a word that always separates and subjugates women from men. 00:17:13.279 --> 00:17:19.359 This is going to sound like a stretch because Jesus is like us in every way, but without sin unless it's willful. 00:17:32.480 --> 00:17:59.119 And I think given what's going on in our country and given the radical call for discipleship that God is always putting out to us, what if Jesus, who is God incarnate, is raised in a system, just like we are, in which there are these abilities to take away the dignity of other beings that God has created with our word choice? 00:17:59.359 --> 00:18:05.680 And so what if Jesus, as John Wesley says, is ignorant? 00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:13.200 What if he starts this story calling this woman, and this is intersectionality, right? 00:18:13.359 --> 00:18:19.119 Because she's a foreigner and she's a woman, so she's got two knocks against her. 00:18:20.880 --> 00:18:23.359 He calls her a female dog. 00:18:24.640 --> 00:18:33.599 And what if it when she falls to her knees and says, Lord, even the dogs are members of the family? 00:18:33.920 --> 00:18:36.799 Even the female dogs belong to the family. 00:18:37.440 --> 00:18:47.599 What if we're supposed to emulate the fact that Jesus sees, perhaps for the first time in his life, humanity in somebody who's other from him? 00:18:48.880 --> 00:18:50.319 And he changes. 00:18:51.519 --> 00:19:03.519 What I would be suggesting is that what's sacramental in the story is that Jesus starts wrong and repents and learns. 00:19:05.759 --> 00:19:11.920 I have to say that it's not one of the they're part of the family as well. 00:22:45.839 --> 00:22:48.640 And he has, I think, the most immmuable thing. 00:22:48.799 --> 00:22:53.680 It's not that he's testing their faith, they're testing his repentance. 00:22:55.200 --> 00:23:03.839 The brothers show up and they're terrified, and for some reason Joseph, instead of getting revenge, after all, that's what they did to him. 00:23:04.400 incumbent upon us to listen, to make time for voices that, frankly, because of who we are, we don't have to. 00:23:37.759 --> 00:23:46.079 The second, and this is the preamble that Jesus gives to the the gospels, is that even God can be raised in systems of inequity, and it is not too late to learn or change, and it is not too late for us, regardless of our age, our gender, our education, you name
