would help me to bring to life in a new way the understanding of what the incarnation is all about. 00:04:59.680 --> 00:05:04.560 And when I couldn't figure it out in my own brain, I did what most of everything I found there kind of did just did not do the job. 00:05:19.120 --> 00:05:28.560 Nothing captured the amazing mystery that is the incarnation, that is God taking on flesh and dwelling among us. 00:05:29.839 --> 00:05:36.399 Many of the illustrations I did find on the internet honestly bothered me in one way or another. 00:05:36.639 --> 00:05:53.680 I felt like they either missed some essential, important element of the incarnation, or they just simply got it wrong, or by trying to explain it away in some cute little story, they cheapened the mystery of it. 00:05:54.639 --> 00:06:07.600 This led me to ask: is the mystery of the incarnation too grand, too wonderful, too amazing for any of us to really get our head around? 00:06:07.920 --> 00:06:16.399 And therefore too big to adequately try to explain in one story or illustration or analogy. 00:06:17.600 --> 00:06:24.480 I wonder how often when we try to explain the mystery away, do we actually cheapen it? 00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:37.839 So instead, I thought I would spend the next 20 minutes giving you a dissertation of the significance of the Greek word logos translated into word in John's gospel. truth that divine love becomes human and dwells among us. 00:07:20.879 --> 00:07:30.000 I recognize that I have been running the risk of cheapening the mystery of the incarnation myself this Advent season. 00:07:30.639 --> 00:07:46.079 And so I would like to spend a few minutes, not backtracking what I offered to those of you who were here through parts of Advent, but instead to fill out the vision in a different way, in hopes to get a bit closer to this divine mystery. 00:07:47.199 --> 00:07:56.079 Through Advent, I reflected on the Isaiah passages and focused on the image that we are all dwellers of the threshold. 00:07:56.480 --> 00:08:02.240 To me, this image suggests that we are living in between two worlds. 00:08:02.480 --> 00:08:08.879 One, a world that is full of pain and suffering and brokenness and darkness. 00:08:09.040 --> 00:08:18.639 And then this second world, this realm where God reigns and exists and everything exists in a way as it's meant to be. 00:08:20.160 --> 00:08:32.799 And so on this threshold we stand not to run away from the darkness, but to hold two worlds together, reaching up to God as God is reaching down to us. 00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:50.000 And while I think this image is helpful in some ways, at least for me, especially in expressing our role as God's conduits of love and living into this idea of the now and the not yet. 00:08:57.279 --> 00:09:06.080 And the first chapter of John's Gospel shines a light on aspects of the mystery that I may have misguided. 00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:22.960 First, the image of the dweller of the threshold may give some the idea that the world is nothing but darkness, that it is all broken and bad, that the world we are living in is just a place we are waiting to escape from. 00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:32.000 And this can then lead to a dualistic thought, simply put, anything physical is bad and anything spiritual is good. 00:09:33.120 --> 00:09:59.120 Second, the image of dwelling on the threshold and reaching up to God as God reaches down to us may also give us the impression that God is distant, removed, and somehow has a go-go gadget arm, or more modern ways of saying it, a drone delivery service that extends from God's far-off world to remotely be in contact with us. 00:10:00.240 --> 00:10:05.519 In the introduction of John's gospel, these two myths are dispelled. 00:10:06.399 --> 00:10:22.000 First, while I think that we can acknowledge that the world we live in has darkness, has brokenness, and we all experience pain and suffering, it's not the only thing that is in our present. 00:10:22.240 --> 00:10:31.440 And John reminds us that the second person of the Trinity, the divine love, has been present since the beginning. 00:10:31.759 --> 00:10:38.159 And the divine love creates all things, nothing is created outside of this divine love. 00:10:38.639 --> 00:10:43.600 All of creation holds the imprint of the divine. 00:10:44.879 --> 00:11:05.279 So while the Greek philosophers like Plato saw the world we live in as less than, only a shadow of the real self, and the Gnostics lived in a way trying to escape this reality because they believed that all things physical were not only inferior, but were simply put, bad. 00:11:05.919 --> 00:11:13.279 On the other hand, John suggests that creation holds onto the infused divine love. 00:11:14.320 --> 00:11:23.039 The divine love creates everything, and none of creation can ever be fully separated from this divine love. 00:11:23.679 --> 00:11:26.399 So to speak, it's in our DNA. 00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:40.720 Yes, we live in a world that is broken, but even in the brokenness and the darkness, there is light of divine love shining through everywhere. 00:11:40.960 --> 00:11:44.000 There has been since the genesis of it all. 00:11:45.039 --> 00:12:02.159 In this second image of God, when things about when thinking about the dwellers of the threshold, has this idea of this God who is removed garden with Adam and Eve. 00:12:11.679 --> 00:12:15.600 God, as a wandering traveler, dined with Abraham. 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:19.279 God spoke with Moses through the burning bush. 00:12:19.759 --> 00:12:29.919 As the Hebrew people traveled through the desert, God was the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night to lead them through the wilderness. 00:12:30.320 --> 00:12:44.159 God was present in the tabernacle, that portable earthly dwelling place, so that wherever the Hebrews went, they could see a tangible reminder that God was in fact with them. 00:12:45.440 --> 00:12:53.200 God continues to be present in the world throughout all of history and even today with us. 00:12:54.399 --> 00:13:09.440 And in an ultimate example of God being present with us, God takes on flesh, becomes a human, and lives with God's creation in this most vulnerable, intimate, and loving way. 00:13:10.480 --> 00:13:20.159 As Eugene Peterson so lovingly paraphrases, the word becomes flesh and blood and moves into the neighborhood. 00:13:21.360 --> 00:13:34.159 While God is completely otherworldly, God is also completely seeped into this world, first as the creator and then as the dweller. 00:13:36.480 --> 00:13:45.600 The incarnation is a mystery, something more complex and more beautiful than we will ever get our heads around. 00:13:46.159 --> 00:13:56.559 But let's not have, but that does not need to have a stop from celebrating this glorious event that brought two worlds together more fully. 00:13:57.120 --> 00:14:00.799 Let's celebrate that God is in fact with us. 00:14:01.200 and she was coarse and unrefined. 00:15:50.559 --> 00:16:05.360 At times, though, it takes someone else, someone to remind us that deep within us is that divine love that never disappears, no matter how ugly we may become. 00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:24.639 The more we are able to become aware of the divine love that is within us, we will find ourselves transformed back into those princes and
