Deuteronomy is the last book of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament. 00:08:19.839 --> 00:08:28.000 And it ends typically capturing the experience of the Exodus. 00:08:28.560 --> 00:08:36.080 And the book itself, Deuteronomy, ends with the death of Moses before the entry into the kingdom, the promised land. 00:08:36.720 --> 00:08:47.200 And so what we get in this short pericope that we read this morning is this kind of a capsule encapsulation of the history of Israel. 00:08:47.279 --> 00:09:12.960 And so it reflects, as we read through it, what the Hebrew community were had gone through, and their experience of being in the desert for 40 years, and most especially their experience of what happened to them in the desert, their longing for God, and their short reading today, that is celebrated in a very simple liturgical ceremony where the first fruits are gathered, presented to the priest, and offered to God in thanksgiving for the mercy of God over kind of experiencing our own temptation to sin, but most especially of connecting to God, so that when Easter comes, in a new way, in a more profound way, hopefully, we can know what it means, that profoundly experience in the depths of our whole being what it means to be joined to the Father, what it means to be connected to the Father through the life and the death and the resurrection of the things that we did that year was gather up the novices. 00:15:04.080 --> 00:15:16.799 There were about 15 of them at that time, uh, and take them out to um the northern Cheyenne Native American thought was important, would be important for them, was to get a sense of the congruence uh of a Franciscan spirituality, that being being connected in a physical, in a in a visceral way to creation, to experience the Native American spirituality. 00:15:55.440 --> 00:16:05.600 And so one of the things we ended up doing, which I had not planned, is the elders offered us an experience to do a sweat lodge, or an Indian sweat. 00:16:06.240 --> 00:16:09.840 And so it was really a profound experience. 00:16:09.919 --> 00:16:11.600 I thought it would be like sort of like a sauna. 00:16:12.080 --> --> 00:16:23.279 Um so it took days. 00:16:23.600 --> 00:16:37.279 It took days for them to gather the saplings and to array them around in a in a very large uh circle around a small uh hole that they connection to the experience. 00:16:52.399 --> 00:17:15.279 They gathered stones from around the reservation, and the stones had to be a certain kind of stone, and they prayed over the stones, and if the stones had, you know, were too porous or had too much air in them or were river stones and had too much water in them, that if you pour water on it in a sweat lodge, they'll explode. 00:17:15.440 --> 00:17:24.079 So you had to be very careful about the kinds of stones, but it wasn't just about the science of it, it was about the stones themselves. 00:17:24.720 --> 00:17:32.480 It was about Jesus was invited to in the wilderness to learn how to be connected to the experience of creation in the world around him, and most profoundly to the men and women whose lives he was called into to heal, to forgive, to show mercy, to draw into union with each other, to do justice, to build peace, to somehow recreate that experience of that Hebrew community after Deuteronomy, who desired nothing
