He Said It Was "From the Pit of Hell." (The mechanic was speechless)

Something happened to JOY FM founder Sandi Brown's car that was unexplainable. It left the mechanic speechless. And left our ministry believing we had experienced something supernatural.This is a story of God's protection and power over the enemy.

Psalm 91:11 says "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways." 

God is watching over you. And you and I will never know all the threats He’s protected us from. And all the dangers that never became stories because God intervened before we ever saw them.

This might be unlike any story you've ever heard because I can confidently say that I have never heard a story like this.

He came up to me and goes, Sandy, I have to tell you about this vision I had last night.

I felt a strong unction from God that we were in a real spiritual battle then.

He goes, I don't know, Sandy, it's like this force from the pit of hell. And I think like you're the target I'm supposed to tell you. The enemy's mad.

And if we haven't met yet, my name is Bryce. I'm on the morning show here at Joy FM. And there are so many stories over the last 25 years that haven't been told until now. But we need to start with a disclaimer. This story took place in 2010. And at the time, smartphones were becoming more widely accepted, but it still wasn't commonplace to have your phone out and take pictures of everything. So because of that, unfortunately, we don't have pictures of this event. Just eyewitness testimony. So I'm sitting down with the eyewitnesses to talk about this story. And luckily, with the help of AI, we were able to generate some images that are very close to what took place. So to set the scene, it was 2010 and it was the week before Joy FM was going to move from two small signals that barely reached into the city to one massive signal that reached the entire city with the message of Jesus. The timeline of that switch to 99.1 FM wasn't fully in our control. It just was what it was. Coincidentally, a St. Louis-based mission trip was planned many months before that, which also happened to be a week full of intense fundraising to actually purchase the 99.1 signal.

It was a team of Joy Thumb listeners serving our community in St. Louis, East St. Louis, Washington Park. So in that week, I was getting up, coming on the air in the morning, raising funds on air, getting off the air at 9 a.m., driving over, connecting with our team. Our family was part of it, Mike and our kids and other Joy Thumb listeners, and then serving in our community until it got dark, and then driving home, they would all stay at a hotel, and I would drive home so I could get a good night's rest and then get back up at the station at five in the morning and go on the air and start that. And so that was what was happening all week long, the week, um, the week of the week before we were going on 99.1.

As you can imagine, not just an exhausting week, but probably pretty emotionally draining. And to fully understand what I'm talking about, you'll have to go and check out the story about the purchase of 99.1. But spoiler alert, even after heartbreak and public backlash, God was about to use Christian music to draw hundreds of thousands of people closer to him. And nothing makes the enemy angrier than that. He's not just gonna sit around and let that happen without a fight.

Well, so it was dark, it was raining, I remember. And just another day driving home, and I was coming from St. Louis, so going through Sage and had just driven by, like where all the clubs and that kind of thing are, had gone over the railroad tracks, and all of a sudden I heard a loud noise like um something had hit my car. But there was no one around me. I'd just gone over the railroad tracks. I'm like, what did I just hit or what just hit me? And then I ought I started to hear a and I thought, oh no, flat tire. Yeah. Rougher part of town, night raining. So I call Mike and I said, I I hear this sound. And he goes, Yeah, it's probably a flat tire. Don't stop right there. He said, keep driving on because um there was a gas station that would have been well lit. So I have him on the phone and I can hear it. Could you hear it on the phone?

Oh yeah, I could hear it on the phone.

So um I was just convinced. He's like, Can you tell which tire it is? And I said, No, the car is handling fine. But but he just was staying on the phone, and then I got to that gas station, pulled in, and he said, So get out and and walk around the car and tell me which tire it is. And I got out of the car and I went and I looked at the left front tire, fine, the other front tire, and I d walked all the way around the car, and none of the tires were flat, none of them looked damaged in any way. And I said, I don't understand it. And I walked around again, I said, the tires are fine.

Well, I think even when you pulled into that garage, uh, that hissing sound you were hearing, it stopped. So makes sense now. Another piece of the puzzle is like, why did that sound stop when the car stopped? When the car stopped.

So you may have noticed right there that Sandy said the hissing sound stopping actually makes sense in hindsight. And maybe you're thinking, it does? I don't understand. Well, hold on, because this gets pretty supernatural. But to fully understand what happened, I need to introduce you to this man. This is Randy MacArthur. And at the time, he was the chair of the board of directors at Joy FM, and he was very involved in the fundraiser for 99.1 FM.

Um as we were going through that effort to raise those funds for 99.1 Joy FM, uh, and as the team was in the uh the mission field there, Sandy, each day after she got off air with the people, uh that I think it was a Wednesday night, and I got in the shower. Uh, and for whatever reason, I hear a lot from God in the shower. I guess it's just him and me, and maybe I'm willing to listen instead of talk. And so uh I I felt a uh a heaviness, and God really revealed to me that we were pushing back darkness and that the darkness didn't like it.

I think he said, Well, if you do you feel good about driving it the rest of the way home? And I'm like, Well, yeah, if it's just gonna make a hissing sound, but the tire, if I'm safe, that's fine. He goes, Well, I'll stay on the phone with you all the way home and let's and if you need me to come get you, I'll come get you. I said, I've I feel comfortable with that. And I wanted to get home, right? So I opened the car door to get back in, and it caught my eye, right under my seat was a triangle-shaped hole. So I said, Mike, there's a hole in the car. And he's like, What do you mean a hole in the car? And I said, I don't know, but I said, I see the ground through the car. And he's like, I don't understand. I'm like, I'm just telling you, I don't know what it is. I said, but I bet the hissing sound, I bet that's the tires on the wet pavement. And I he and he said, I think he said, Well, look around. Is there anything in the floorboard or anything like that? And there were like little um shavings of metal, like right under the seat, but there was nothing in the car anywhere. And he's like, I I'm not even understanding what you're saying. I can't picture in my mind what happened, or but if do you still feel comfortable to drive home? I said, Yeah, I'll drive home. He's like, Well, go home then, and I'll look at it tomorrow and and we'll assess what's going on. Is that your recollection?

So I get home, go to bed.

And I just felt God give me this picture of the fact that we as a ministry were pushing back darkness. Uh, and the darkness wasn't happy about us pushing back against it. Uh, and I felt a spiritual battle taking place. Uh, and so I I prayed against that, whatever it was that was happening, either physically or spiritually, in that, but I felt a strong, uh, a strong unction from God that we were in a real spiritual battle then. Um, God knew uh what could happen. I think Satan was afraid. Uh so that following morning I came in to the station uh and I shared with Sandy, I said, Sandy, I I don't know why, but I want to share what I felt God told me last night.

Went to bed, got in the next morning, and before going on the air, Randy MacArthur, chair of our board of directors, was there to help on air with fundraising. And he came up to me and goes, Sandy, um, but before we go on the air, I have to tell you about this. I forget if he said dream or vision I had last night. And which is unusual. He had never said that to me before. And he said, you know how we're doing mission trip work and we're getting ready to go on 99-1. I I feel like the Lord showed me we're pushing back the darkness. Like, like this isn't just a fundraiser, this isn't just a mission trip. We are pushing back the darkness in our city, and he wanted us to be aware of that, but he also wanted us to be aware that and be on the lookout for like the enemy's mad.

Satan was not happy, and that we were going to see attack from the very pit of hell, uh, and that uh I believe Sandy was a target.

He goes, I don't know, Sandy, it's it's like this force from the pit of hell, and I think it's gonna come up from the pit of hell. And I I think like you're the target. I'm supposed to tell you, like, and the first thing that came to my mind was is that what caused a hole in my car? And so I told him about the car, and we both just kind of stood there at each other and went, is that I mean, surely not, right? Like that's odd. And then Mike was just a couple of days sometime very short order, you got it into the car to um the dealership where we'd bought it.

So there's two pieces to that story. So the first piece was what did you hit? Because for an object to build pierce your vehicle there would have to be very strong uh because of the thickness of the metal. At least an eighth of an inch, maybe a quarter inch thick. And to pierce that, and to be that close to contacting you was troubling to me. The the second piece of that story is how close it came in contact to severing the brake line uh for the vehicle. So if it would have severed that brake line, she wouldn't have been able to stop.

Yeah. And I remember him asking questions. I think you said, like, so what did go through your car? And uh we didn't know. And he's like, Well, for something to go up into your car, because he said, I think if if I would have run over something based on the height of how it got into the car, it would have messed up our bumper, it would have scraped all the way. You mean like if you ran over something, there would have been scrape marks. And I think and I I think the mechanic was also confounded because if something if some object right forcefully causes a hole in your car, it's either gonna stay in your car, uh but he he's like, it wouldn't go up and then come back down. Like what exactly does that? So it would stay in your car, and there was nothing in our car.

And probably a day or two after that, you know, I'd drive that every day, going to and from work, and uh never could find anything at that crossing.

When the mechanic, who probably sees all kinds of things on all kinds of cars, I I couldn't come up with a plausible explanation. Because I'm like, well, I'm probably just missing something, right? When the mechanic said, I have no explanation for this, I think the only explanation that we could land on was this what Randy had talked about? Was this what so at the time that Randy is seeing something from the Lord, something's happening to my car. So timing is interesting. The fact that it can't be explained by the mechanic who had nothing to do with our situation led me to believe that I think it was something supernatural. I think it was I put it in the bucket of like a spiritual attack.

Spiritual warfare is real. And uh the things uh there are things that happen in this life that we can't explain. And those are supernatural things, and they can be on both sides of that. You know, the enemy has supernatural things that he does, and our God we know is supernatural, but he's greater.

I I'm not like a you know, see a demon behind every bush kind of person. Our family's not that way. But I believe the Bible, when the Bible says that there is a prince of this air, I read that there is evil, that we are to be prepared, put on our full armor of the of the Lord. And I feel like, especially in ministry, we talk about this as a staff, you know, this Bryce, that the enemy um is real, that the enemy doesn't play fair, goes after our marriages, our kids, our families, tries to scare us, like he just doesn't play fair. And I think that's um important truth to be aware of when we're in ministry, to try to shure up and um be prepared for battle because it's real.

It's just crazy to think about like the devil has all these games he can play, right? And he can get close, but like he can never get closer than God is.

Yeah, and I don't know. I mean, there's just so that's what I know. Then there's all kinds of things like what I don't know. That maybe we will, you know what I mean? Will you see in full at the end, like I don't know.

Yeah, you don't know what angels were there protecting you.

Right. Like, was it the Lord's hand that moved it over? Yeah. Was it an angel? I don't know.
