Gather round children, and listen to a few fourty-somethings tell you the tale of a time....before social media. We dive into how it started, how we've watched it become part of everyday life and the ups and (mostly) downs of it existing in general.
It all started as a CPF filters and vaga wave messages on aim. But now social media is constant. We know everything about everything all the time. In the same scroll you can see your friends from childhood and how imperfect you are and all the products to fix it. So is social media bringing us together or quietly stealing our peace? Welcome to Raging Gracefully. Hey. Hi everyone. This is Raging Gracefully. And we're back. And we're back with a very um, what do you want to say, hot topic? Are we thinking hot?
SPEAKER_00It's yeah, it's something like I I'm ready to get riled up. It's worldwide. I'm ready to get mad. I'm not mad. I'm ready to I'm ready to be passionate and have opinions.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, passionate. This is gonna get a little heated. So the topic is social media. We want to talk about this. Changed what society? What was life like before social media if you're like us? We're we're we're in our forties, so you guys have to understand like if you're in your 40s, then you know this is like a new thing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's still relatively new. I think that's also important to mention in the scheme of things in life, like that's a good point, actually. Yeah, it's a really good point. Especially to the degree that it is now of like posting everything. Oh god, like that is still like in a bracket of years, relatively new, I think, in society and in life.
SPEAKER_03It feels almost like a social experiment. Yes. That has never stopped. Like it started and then it just said, This is what life is now. Yes. The whole how people document everything is insane to me.
SPEAKER_00So we go back. Let's let's talk about what it was like when we didn't have like for a hot second.
SPEAKER_03It was now that we're in social media, I could tell you now it was wonderful. Yeah. I didn't know when people were having babies, I didn't know when they were getting married, I didn't know who my boyfriend, ex-boyfriend was with. I didn't know any of this. It was lovely. And you didn't you weren't supposed to know. That's the thing. You're not supposed to know because now people who find it much more difficult to move on. Oh, and this is where they also what is it? They they want to be in with the Jones, you know, that saying they they like compare themselves. In with the Joneses. There you go. They compare themselves to everybody.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yes. I mean, I mean, we it is so wild that like the way you would get okay, I guess we'll talk like internet. I was just gonna say, I was like, because I was like, I guess it's only fair to start it like when the internet was coming about and being a thing, and we were all having dial up on AOL and stuff like that. Yes, it was like you could still you would start finding out like celebrity gossip and stuff, yeah, kind of about from like blogs. Remember like Perez Hilton? Did you did you ever read that?
SPEAKER_03This was like Perez Hilton, this was a long time, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah, like that was the way, and like that whole stuff was like toxic in its own right, which is crazy the way he like judged women and stuff like that was crazy. People loved it though, but people loved it, but like what's wild is that that was one person and one blog, and he blew up because like that was his thing, and now that's everything's thing now everybody everyone can just make a post about how so-and-so is fat, how so-and-so is pregnant, how so-and-so's dating so-and-so, and they were sodded with so-and-so, and it's just like and anyone can do it in a way that it's like it's so overwhelming.
SPEAKER_03Wow, it's you're right. I mean, literally, opinions had now people get on their phones, they go on TikTok, Instagram, whatever it is, and they just start talking and ranting about whatever it is, like this person gained weight, like you said, um, oh, uh in whatever new what is it, the new topic that comes out in that morning, whatever TMZ just said, or that's the thing, and they go rant on this, and people like it and follow and like it, and they got thousands of likes and whatever. But meanwhile, if you read the comments, they're also arguing with them and hating them. It's so bizarre to me. Yeah, why are you listening to this person if you hate this person?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. It was like I think about when I I was in college when Facebook first launched. Um, I think it was a sophomore in college. And so, like, you know, you had to have like an EDU email in order to even sign up for it. And it's like, uh, you know, I had downloaded uh all my photos when I got off of Facebook. I like downloaded them uh onto a drive just so I wouldn't lose them. Of like, and I looked at I've looked at the one thing that I've uploaded, and it's like, oh my god, I am so fucked up in these searchers. And I'm just like, I am so grateful that I've like closed my I've like deactivated my account or whatever. Because I'm just like, this things do last on the internet forever. I'm actually sure if somebody really's scary. Yeah, I'm like, I'm sure if somebody did like dig on Facebook, they could find these photos. I mean, it's me just like wasted, like whatever. It's not terrible, it's not like my tits are out or anything, but like, and even if they were, like, who cares? Probably get a lot of lights. Yeah, I was like, I'd actually probably be a lot more successful than I am now if I had tits out. But like, but it is just it's so interesting to see that like I posted it and there's it was very minimal, right? Like it was just like there wasn't like thousands of likes and feelings and opinions. It was just like for me and my friends to be like, oh my god, remember that night after remember that party after we did the show in college? Hilarious! And that's it.
SPEAKER_03That's it. I mean, and now people can. I don't like this feature, by the way. They share it, yes. They can share it. Yeah. I'm like, oh, I don't like that. Yeah, you could just share it with anyone, and then you write, oh, you know, whatever they're writing, whatever gossip, and also like the quotes. So I went back and I looked at some stuff. God. I'm like, what was wrong with me? I'm one of those people I don't like.
SPEAKER_00Were you writing like good deep quotes as your stuff?
SPEAKER_03They're just so dumb. I was like, but I was like, I was a kid, but still, it was like, why did I even post that? That's because it was like it was new, right? Like I go back now and I'm like, please let no one find this ever.
SPEAKER_00But it was like such a new concept to be like we had aim, right? Where we could do instant message and leave like away messages. Yeah. Where we could like, we would leave like song lyrics as our away message that would be like so vague, depending on what we were dealing with in our lives. But it was so harmless. I mean, it didn't cause harm to people.
SPEAKER_03I mean, now people just it's ugly. Yeah, that's a good word. They're like ugly, and also, I mean, I talked about this with you a little, but I'll meet someone, right? Yeah, oh my god, I'll meet them somewhere. And I'm okay. I'm like, oh, that person was cool. They're like, oh, follow me on Instagram. Okay. Then they start posting, and I'm like, oh, I don't fucking don't like this person. I don't like I don't know what's happening. Like, I why did I you can't follow sometimes you just should not follow someone. And if you follow them and you like them in person and all of a sudden you don't, maybe you should unfollow them. But then I had a thought, what if that is them? Yeah, they're just like their post is who they really are. I don't know. I just there's a lot of people I don't like. Like I roll my eyes all day. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like I this is the whole reason I had to deactivate Facebook. Is this this was pre-pandemic? It was like, I think it was like 2019 actually. And I it, you know, I'd been on Facebook for a long time. It was since college, probably almost 10 years, and I was just like, it was fine, it was whatever. And then, you know, misinformation started hitting the feed. And then, but the biggest thing for me was that like you, I would meet people, and like it would be like in a reading or in a brief show that I did, or at an audition. Sometimes I would be like sitting and chatting someone up and being like, let's be friends on Facebook. And I'm like, okay, and then it was like I would know them for like less than an hour, and then we would be friends on Facebook, and then the next day I would open Facebook and be like that person would be like, guys, I'm going through a really hard time right now. And it's like, and it would be like paragraph after paragraph of sadness and personal information and like really deep personal information. I'm like, I don't want to know this. We talked about a monologue from Shakespeare for 40 minutes. Why am I knowing about the fact that your grandmother, your dog, and your ex-boyfriend died in the span of six months? That is terrible that you had to experience that, and I'm sorry you did. I don't want to know that. I don't want the emotional I don't want the emotional burden of like having to think about how sad it is that you're dealing with this because I don't know you, but it does make me sad to now know this for you. Like I am sad. Like it would be, I'd be like, I can't keep learning about people's tragedies because it's ever everyone's got tragedies. I don't want I don't need to know everyone's tragedies.
SPEAKER_03But now here's my question to that. Did you see this person again? No, a lot of times I would never see them again. This this is what bothers me most. Yes. So now you have this brief introduction to someone, and you have all these personal stuff that you know about them. And my biggest problem is P and it's different. Instagram and Facebook are different because for sure. And and Facebook Facebook has changed a bit. I feel like as the older I don't know, what do we audience, whatever uh and these older audiences in their 50s and 60s?
SPEAKER_00They're older than us, right? Like I think that's a good thing. They're like older, older.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like I don't think we're old. I think we're as fuck because they talk about like they put these photos with their family members, and then they'll say these long paragraphs, and at the end, if you read it to the end, copy and paste it to 10 other people. Stop it. Oh, you're doing chain letters on fucking Facebook. So many. So I don't really go on Facebook. I have my account. I thought about deactivating it a million times, but I think part of it.
SPEAKER_00That's how you keep it though. I get it. Like sometimes it's ways to keep in touch with people and to like update people on specific things. Like, I don't, I totally know what it is. I don't do anything on Facebook.
SPEAKER_03I just kind of like I feel sometimes I get a I just look at it and roll my eyes and make me it makes me hate people. It's so bad. Why are you saying read this to the end? But I know no one will.
SPEAKER_00I know no, yes, that's what it is. I know no one will. You're like, okay. My gods.
SPEAKER_03I love this one. If you are my real friend, you know, like your real friend. Like it's just like, what are we 12?
SPEAKER_00What are we doing? You're a grown ass person. Like, why are you posting things like this on the internet? Like, I I just it's just too much. I think the biggest the biggest thing which we're currently talking about is that like everyone just feels like everything needs to be online about their life. And I just don't agree with this. I don't know. I think because everyone feels I think because everyone thinks that they're important, and we're all not. Like, I think that's the biggest thing is like social media has made everyone have this sense of like inflated ego slash I I think people think that like everyone cares about them, and I'm like, Okay, they don't. Like and I mean like I'll watch silly things online and like whatever, but I'm just like, I think everyone feels like entitled to now be famous through the internet.
SPEAKER_03Um do you think it's that um when if when when this all started, yeah and you would have an account and you post something, yeah, and the more likes you got, the more happy people got. It was like fulfilling. It felt validating. That's the word.
SPEAKER_00It felt validating.
SPEAKER_03Yes, they feel like, oh my god, everybody liked this. But what they don't realize is that sometimes people are just clicking it because they feel like they have to click it because then they see you, and I've had this happen to me. True story. Where they'll say to someone, she hasn't liked any of my photos in a long time. Do you think that like she doesn't like me anymore? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I hate that that has dictated how people like.
SPEAKER_03Maybe I just didn't like it because I'm not liking anybody's anymore because I'm over social media.
SPEAKER_00And I'm just scrolling, I'm not like thinking about liking, I'm just kind of looking at things for a moment.
SPEAKER_03That's the other thing. And then there is the one where I'm like, I wish I could unfollow you, but I can't. And I'm not liking it because I don't like you. But you can't say that. You can't say that, but then to somebody else, that might not be my story. My story might be, oh, I didn't even notice that you did that. And guess what? I haven't been on social media since last night. Yeah. Because I was busy with my kids. I'm sorry. I don't go back that far.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Also, I'm just people like I've seen people be like, uh, you know, people are reading my watching my stories, but not engaging, da-da-da. And I I haven't said this, but I want to be like, a lot of times when I'm watching stories, I'm on the fucking toilet and like I'm doing it while I'm going to the bathroom, and then I sometimes I don't think about it, and I just let them keep let the stories keep going while I like put my phone like on the sink while I like finish up my business. And I'm like, I'm not, I'm not watching. Like your story probably happened while I was like finishing pooping, and I'm really sorry, but I'm also just like, don't use these views to validate whether you are important or good or interesting or talented. It's just like you cannot put that kind of weight on social media.
SPEAKER_03Which brings me to this generation.
SPEAKER_00Oh man. Because this is a second episode, and they're people are gonna be like, it's all old. Yeah, no, do it, say it. Talk about it.
SPEAKER_03They are cyber focused on their phones and what they're wearing and taking photos and getting likes. It's crazy. How old are your kids? Sorry. No, it's all right. Um sorry, how old are my kids? My son is six, my daughter's four. Okay, so they're too young to like be in this world, yeah. Oh, they're not gonna be in this world for I mean this is I'm not gonna allow my children to have phones or anything until they're like to an age where I can understand. Yeah, good. I see children with it. Yes, I don't know what's happening. Sterling. Um, I mean, you people do you, it's not my life. You live your life, it's not my business. But what I'm saying about the youth now is that their connection is not like our connection was. Yeah. There's a lot missing in translation here. People say things that I find inappropriate, hard through messages. So, like now, if someone passes away, they just post it and I'm like, wow, that's so like private. And it's just put out there, oh, and this is happening, this, there, there, and I'm like, it's such a private thing. And then they post these photos, and I it's just not my thing. It's not something I would do. But this generation is used to it this way, which it concerns me because they don't really know authenticity. Do you know? It's like they feel shit. Are we really gonna get cancelled? We might get canceled.
SPEAKER_00No, not at all. No, we'll be fine. I think it's fine. I also stand by this so much. Like, I have no problem talking about it because I do I worry about like I mean everybody gets canceled. Yeah, right. It might be more popular if we get canceled. That's true. No publicity is bad publicity. But I do feel like um I and you know, like I there must be some kind of hesitation about how this younger generation is living their life because of the risk of always being filmed or always being having a picture and post it online. It that it's like, could you imagine like going to a party when you were 21, like you did, right? And then just like being a total maniac and like fucked up out of your mind and having fun and like whatever, and and it's like being irrespon honestly, being irresponsible, but like that's what you did. You were you were a kid and you had fun, and like that is what happens still. Yeah, this is how you grow. Right. And it's like I do feel like if I was if I knew that at any moment I could I could like black out from being too drunk, and I it would be fucking filmed and put on the social media forever. I mean, yeah, I probably would have never drank. I probably I was just gonna say, I don't think I would have ever drank. And they're not. The younger generation isn't. It's like statistically happening with like sales of alcohol across the country. Like, it's it's low. I've talked to somebody who's in um that field of like r uh sales reps and stuff like that in like alcohol and and beer and wine. Interesting. I didn't know that. That's very interesting. It is taking a hit between between health consciousness becoming like more in the world in general, and between Gen Z not drinking, sales of alcohol, beer, and wine have like plummeted.
SPEAKER_03I think people are gonna be very interested to know that because I did not know that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I I honestly don't have like numbers. It's like like I said, it's like old bar regulars of mine from last year that I like chatted with that they're just like, oh yeah, no, no, it's not, it's not great. It's not great.
SPEAKER_03But like you said, everything, so you can find anything. You can't really erase anything. Yeah. And just the I guess availability, the fact that you can have this phone that really is a tool for to put anything you want on it or take any pictures of anything or anyone without anyone noticing. It scares the crap out of me. Yes. I don't like to be that uh exposed. I'm more private. I I don't post often. Um I would post more if it's something like I want to uh advertise something that I think is fun. Promote, promote is a better word. But I what I see, these kids, these little girls and TikTok who are here, uh just to show you. Yeah. And then so the other day I was going through it. I don't know, like you said, I was in the kitchen waiting for something. I'm scrolling, and all of a sudden I stopped and I went, ooh, I feel like I just like my brain's useless right now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like you lost brain cells just like watching that shit.
SPEAKER_03Like just over and over and over, and it's the same video. Oh, this eye thing, and it's like, I feel like I'm in this movie. I hate to like, but I do where they're like, you know, the girl's like, oh, and this lip thing and forget about lip filler, you used to flip with it, and then the other one's like, oh, if you drink this one, it's not the thing. Oh, and then and I'm like, whoa. What the what is happening? Yeah, it scared me. Yeah, it's like a little tunnel you go down and you can't get out of.
SPEAKER_00And none of them are an adult.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, imagine a child. It's not helping your life at all. No, but imagine the children how they get stuck on this and they're like and it's like whoa.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and how it makes them. I mean, how you had talked about like makeup and eye stuff. What's crazy, like I in here we go, yeah. In middle school, I was so ugly because I it's true, girl. I like I was quintessential, like frizzy hair, braces, glasses. We were we did not have a ton of money, so I like did not have cool clothes. Like we were very middle class, like probably Jesus, nowadays we'd be considered like lower middle class, but at the time, like we weren't we weren't like poor poor, but it was like we were very like paycheck to paycheck kind of family. Lower middle class on my end, yeah. You know, like where it's just like your family is paycheck to paycheck, and it's like they did their best, and and like, but it wasn't like we could afford I could afford like name brand clothes, you know? And so I did not I was very not cute in middle school, and like I'm really glad that those pictures are like in a photo album and not on the internet forever, but also like I can't imagine if there was the pressure at that point for me to have like makeup and hair and be a certain look and weight and clothes, like all these girls. I got I try to get like one thing out of Sephora and I'm like throwing bows and like elbowing my way through fucking 14 year olds, and I'm just like, you don't need any. Of this, like especially the skincare.
SPEAKER_03They're putting like all these $45 moisture creams. I'm like, where is your mom? Can I just let her know that you don't need this? Yeah, I also just want to be like, just save your money.
SPEAKER_00It's not like, oh, you don't need it. It's like you actually don't need this. They don't need that. It's not baby skin. Yeah, you're not, your skin isn't losing nutrients. Your skin isn't like, you're not aging. Yeah, you're not aging in a way that like you need to replenish anything yet. And it just like, I think about the kind of pressures that are put. I also like see how these how especially like young women look, and I'm like, oh, you you're 14 and you look 18. Like I was like 14 and I looked 12. Or I like, or like I was like a very nerdy 14 who looked 14, you know? And it's just like I didn't I didn't look older because I was wearing like low-cut stuff and all this makeup and like full beat face, you know. It's just like that's just not what because we didn't have phones in like middle school and early high school, most of high school, it was like we didn't have this constant reminder from the internet or social media to be like, you have to look this way, you have to be this way, like you need to get this because it's cool. Like, oh my god, I mean, I remember the beanie baby craze. Can you imagine beanie babies if like the internet was around? It would be, I mean what a fucking nightmare.
SPEAKER_03First of all, I hated beanie babies.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I had a lot. I'm not gonna lie, I got into it. I didn't. No.
SPEAKER_03My mommy them anyway. She's not gonna be able to do it. That's also smart. No, it is.
SPEAKER_00She's like, we're not doing that. They're all sitting in attics everywhere. They have no worth. She was right. They have no worth.
SPEAKER_03Although I know. Maybe if you went on TikTok, they're not going to be able to do them.
SPEAKER_00No, people have looked. No. Unless you have like there's like two super, super rare ones that if you have it, you can make money. The rest of them, I don't know fucking trash.
SPEAKER_03This is just trash. It's like those Pokemon cards. Yes, those are still around though. Yeah, but who's collecting these stupid cards? What do you do with the cards? Just kidding. I can't. Well, maybe.
SPEAKER_00Maybe they had they know something I don't, though. That's not my world. It it is like a whole thing that I have friends who are into it. I don't know anything about it. I don't know a lot about it. Those have what I will say, I will say I give credit to Pokemon cards that they are still around for this is true. And actively being collected. Whereas beanie babies were a huge fad, like like La Boo-Boo.
SPEAKER_03And oh my god, that guy's a billionaire. Yeah. Upper billionaire. Dumbass little ugly thing that are at least 50 bucks a pop.
SPEAKER_00Also, crazy.
SPEAKER_03My daughter was at the pharmacy with me. She's like, I go, no, that's ugly. We're not bringing that home. Let's go. And it's expensive, I told her.
SPEAKER_00Get that out of my house.
SPEAKER_03I told her it's money. It's a lot of money. She's like, okay, mom. Yeah. You're like, I no. But piggybacking on that, you know, with the whole um middle high school. So my mom did not allow me to like wear makeup, anything. But I literally didn't start wearing makeup till I was like 20. Okay. But um, we had magazines, right? And the magazines would have these like women, and they used to say, I don't know if you remember this, oh, try not to let your child get influenced by these supermodels. Yeah. Because not everyone looks like that, blah blah blah. And now we have everything social media.
SPEAKER_02It's constant.
SPEAKER_03And I mean, wow. First of all, I didn't have expensive stuff, but I went to school, like I told you, and like the South Bronx and the Bronx. No one talked about that. We didn't care what we wore. Right. And the girls weren't like there wasn't that hype where where girls were coming in with a lot of makeup or anything. There were some girls that did come in with the red lipstick, but other than that, like it's not what I see now. I looked my age. I did not blossom till I was like 16. So I always looked younger.
SPEAKER_00I will say one positive thing about social media is now you can watch tutorials. Like there's certain things I've like I've done, I've wanted to figure out with my hair if I get it like cut shorter or whatever. That I'm like, all right, how do I make it look like this, you know? And I'll find like a YouTube or like a TikTok or something about how to like use your straighten it or curl and da da da da. And I'm like, oh great. I actually didn't know how to do that, and now I know how to do that, and it's like helpful. But so that there is positives. I mean, hey, you know, we're not access the accessibility, I think, is nice to be able to find things like that by people who are good at it.
SPEAKER_03But then talking about accessibility, I'll tell you what, that's another thing that has degeneration. So Amazon's a great example. Yeah. You want something? Got it. So where is the waiting for anything?
SPEAKER_00No one wants to wait.
SPEAKER_03So this is something I struggle with with my children. So I make my children wait. Good. For everything. Yeah. Because that's normal. This yeah. Because what happens is it's like they're now aware of Amazon.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03And they're like, but you can order it. And I'm like, I can, but I won't.
SPEAKER_00Oh, interesting. That's so interesting.
SPEAKER_03They're they're so aware of that blue truck that comes and drops off anything you'd like that comes from your phone.
SPEAKER_00In two days.
SPEAKER_03They're four and six. Yeah. But they know it. Which is they don't know, yeah, they know it. So they don't know instant gratification. It's like twick. Okay. When you have that, this is just my opinion. You can't fill yourself. You're always so there is voids because you're always hungry, it's never enough, right? It's never. So you're always like, oh, where did you get that mascara? Oh, let me get it. Oh, let me. First of all, financially, I don't even know want to know what happens. Second of all, it doesn't allow the youth to know what it is like to work for something, to wait for something, to fully desire something and have to wait to get it.
SPEAKER_00It it sensationalizes. Have you uh this is a little bit of a tangent, but do you watch the show The Pit? I've seen yeah, I've seen some excellent. It's it's so amazing, but what's interesting is like like a normal show that we grew up with, it's once a week. There's it's not like a it's not dropped like a binge situation. Yeah, and there's a mini-series.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. There has been a lot of controversy. Here we go. Over get this. There's been a lot of controversy of like people being upset about the plot. And I was reading, I spent too much, I do spend time on Reddit, which I like should not, but I love Reddit. Um, but it was people being like, this is what's happening. Like media literacy is at an all-time low. Or it's like media literacy is just like struggling because people are watching this and they try to get ahead of an episode to be like, this is what's gonna happen next. And they have to wait a whole week to get it. And then when they do get that episode, it doesn't happen the way they wrote it in their head, and so they're like, this doesn't make any sense, or this is da-da-da-da. And everybody has all these negative opinions about the episode. And like, I I read, I honestly don't know if it was quoted from an article or someone just commenting on Reddit, but I thought it was very I thought it was a really good point of being like everyone is creating their own show in their head without just sitting back and waiting for the next episode to take in what is happening with the plot and each character, and then they're dissatisfied with the story because it's not what matches in their head. But guess what? Like, it's not your job to write this show. You're supposed to be entertained, but they want this like instant like what's supposed to happen next, like instant gratification on this on this show. And it's like that's not that's not how TV shows used to work.
SPEAKER_03You're blowing my mind right now because I can't even you're saying this to me, right? But in my head, I'm going, it's very bizarre for me to think that people actually think that way. Yeah. Because I still watch things and I just am watching and I'm fully invested into oh my god, what's gonna happen? But I'm excited. I'm not making up what should happen. I'm not upset that it happened.
SPEAKER_00Oh, online fandoms have become out of control. I don't really immerse myself in them because I think they're ridiculous. I don't, I think I might have to check this out. You should. I mean, like the Stranger Things fandom that happened when this final season came out of people thinking certain people were gonna get together, certain people are gonna die.
SPEAKER_03It didn't do well, right?
SPEAKER_00No, it was I don't think it was very good. But like I haven't watched it yet. Yeah, I mean I thought it it was I loved one and two. Yeah, I think it continues to just not. They should have cut it off, I think. That's my thing. No, it was outgrading. Do you know that when the f you know when the first season premiered, Obama was president?
SPEAKER_03I did not know that.
SPEAKER_00That's true. That makes sense because that fucking show has been around.
SPEAKER_03Millie Brown was a baby.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, she's a little baby.
SPEAKER_03She was seven years old or I know.
SPEAKER_00Eight years old. Yeah. So uh so like I said, I'm sorry, this is a tangent like on social media, but No, no, but I just didn't know this was a thing. But yeah, like I guess it does kind of actually flow into social media of like people doing these like opinions of fandom. Now that everyone, again, everyone thinks they're important, everyone thinks that they want to have an opinion about everything. They can just toast it on like Reddit or Instagram. I mean, there are people that are like, um this woman who voices a cartoon character who just posted an email that she received from a like an obsessed fan. Oh my lord. About how he was upset. A, she's doing a voice of like a child it's like the cartoon character is like a child. This obsessed fan wrote Sorry, I don't know if you could hear this iron, but I want to.
SPEAKER_03I missed them. I love it. I missed them.
SPEAKER_00I missed the city. I mean, you say that if you lived in the route of two different hospitals going different directions, I don't know if you feel that way. But um But um she posted on her Instagram like this obsessed fan wrote to her being like, I wrote you a DM on Instagram and you didn't respond. And I just saw on Instagram that you shipped, which is like how the youth say, like, two characters should get together, you know? Uh-huh. And they're like, You shipped your character with someone else, and I've been told by a heavenly force that I, the love of my life, is her cartoon character. And how dare you say that your cartoon character should end up with someone else? And like, I mean, it was the most it was so unhinged. Like, this person clearly needs mental help. This person is clearly unwell. This is not good. But he was able to find her and talk to her, and is so obsessed that on social media he can like reach out to this voice actor and have these like have access to her. And that's really scary.
SPEAKER_03So I I watched this quick movie on Netflix because I was bored and I was like, okay. This dad couldn't find his daughter. But it showed it was basically the film is about social media. And he was able to get into all her accounts, figure out where she was at, who she was talking to, who was talking to her conversations, getting into all these apps. And I was like, by the end of that, I was like, I'm afraid. Like what I felt inside was you can't hide. Mm-hmm. I don't like that feeling. Yeah but this movie did such a great job at really opening your eyes, I guess is the best way, an eye-opener into just how deep the internet can go. And that nothing gets deleted. Mm-hmm. It was it was it was actually a good movie. It was one of these things where I was like, this is gonna suck. And it did not. I had me sitting on the edge of my seat like this. Like my mouth was open. And then afterwards, I told my husband, I was like, Oh my god, you can't do anything. Don't ever do anything.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, don't ever do anything. I think that's the best advice I've ever heard. Don't ever do anything.
SPEAKER_03Don't do anything, don't like even with.
SPEAKER_00Social media, don't ever do anything.
SPEAKER_03Don't ever actually that's great. I think we should. I think but that's how it felt. Yeah, it was very real. I'm not even kidding you. Uh it stayed with me. Yeah. That for the next two days I would look at my phone and go, Who else is watching this? This is crazy. Yeah. And just to like finish up, like sort of with the imagery aspect of this. Yes. I wish that I could find a platform where I could tell these young girls and and not even super young, even these women in their 20s and 30s, like what you're watching, when you're watching the Chloe Kardashians and you're watching these TikTokers, uh, they have, first of all, the best lighting they edit.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_03Their skin looks glass because they're doing that. Um, and the other thing is no, these women that like the the Kardashians and whoever else that's really influenced, even like Kelly Ripper, who is ripped right now, right? They have number one time so much money. So personal trainers, nutritionists. They can get their Botox. Like, this is not just a normal person that makes a pretty okay income and uh and just lives a normal life. This is celebrity, this is different. Because I think that uh they do feel like, how do I look like that? How do I get like that? What is she doing? It's crazy. Yeah. And I wish there was more about that. Or I I really do hope that the parents stress over and over, like, look, this is not this may be real in their life, but it's because of X, Y, and Z. Right.
SPEAKER_00They have the money for that, they have the the fame. You see all these people, like you said, with all this success, uh with all this access to all of these um services to make them uh beautiful and thin and looking healthy. And I'm like, I'm really worried about people holding themselves to a standard of that. And that's I think what I I like growing up with social media of like it just being something silly to be like, here's my friends at a restaurant, or like, here's my food with some dumbass filter on it, because there was like seven available on Instagram, and that's it, right? You could have seven filters. Yeah, there's only seven. There were no stories, or not like you just put a black and white thing and being like, This is my salad, wow, you know, and you're like, whatever. And that was it, and it was artsy. And now it's just like, and now it has just morphed into being like you think everything needs to be every part of your life needs to be part of everyone else's life. And it's just like it doesn't need to be like that.
SPEAKER_03And on top of that, it also goes with what I was saying with the whole Amazon, like just instant gratification.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I want to look a certain way. Oh, guess what? There's a pill, there's a shot now. Yeah. I don't have to work for it. This is easy. Yes, it's fast, it's instant. It's instant, and I mean that you gotta understand. We start with something like Amazon where everything's at your fingers, fingertips. Yeah. But then it migrates into what this has happened.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And then it migrates into plastic surgery. If you can have the money or you put it on credit, it just when is enough enough? When do you go I look great the way that I am? Yeah. I'm not supposed to look like everyone else.
SPEAKER_00And also like when people in your life are telling you that you look great, but then everything you see online is constantly pushing you to be better. It's just like I feel like there's probably this internal conflict of being like, well, is society gonna judge me if I age naturally, right? It's like and you're seeing so many people, they're like, no, I'm just like every you know, like I'm like everybody else. And I'm like, you're not. Like you're able to get all of these procedures and all these things. And I'm like, that's also fine. Like, if that's what you want to get, right? I'm not hating. You want to do that, do that. Fine. If you have the finances, right, it's like fucking do it, whatever. But I'm also just like, I I worry that people feel like they're not enough anymore unless they look like that. And I think social media continues to push that message, which us growing up, it was never about that. I think that's what sucks. Is it was about like it's never about that. It was about sharing stupid statuses that were somewhat vague. So your friends are like, what's going on?
SPEAKER_03And you know, it was like no one commented the way that people commentate.
SPEAKER_00It wasn't about fighting and immediately starting discourse. It was just like it was being like, OMG high, or like, you know, it was just so it was dumb. It was dumb, and that's in a good way. And like Yeah, it was it was it was child play. It was yes, it was just it was corny, yeah. And it didn't, it didn't matter, it didn't hold a weight to anything in your life.
SPEAKER_03These um influencers that have this, if you notice, all their house looks the same. Obviously, they have no clutter, nobody has a notepad laying around. No one has easy, I mean, I I've never seen anything so unreal in my life. Yeah, the everything is perfect, yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's staged. Okay, it's not real life, it's not real. It's not what real life is.
SPEAKER_03If you have children, trust me, there's always little things left around that you can't you pick up all day. There's nothing. These people have four kids and they're like house is pristine white. And I'm like, come on, it's not real.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I do like go on, sorry.
SPEAKER_03No, I was just gonna say it was just not real. Like it has to be said over and over and over to our youth. This is not real. Life is messy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Okay, life is messy. And that's okay. And also, like, stop filming your friends being idiots. Let them be idiots and like just be with them. You know, like have fun.
SPEAKER_03Just have fun. Stop stop uh I mean this nasty, like the bad comments on social media.
SPEAKER_00Wow. It's just gonna destroy people's uh like mentality.
SPEAKER_03It's just gonna be you could go further than that, it's gonna destroy humanity. So if people start like For real, just stop. Like a lot of it needs to like, but it's not. I know. It's not so let the bet good be good and the bad be bad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but like guys, just live live in the mo literally, just live in the moment, like live your life.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, and what was it that I said?
SPEAKER_00Don't ever do anything. Don't ever do anything, guys. Don't ever do anything.
SPEAKER_03All right, guys. I'm sure we're gonna touch on this topic again because it's a huge one. Thanks for joining us again, episode two. And we'll see you next time. Bye.
