Mark Chapter 3 | From Withered Hands to Living Water | BibleBangers

In this episode of Bible Bangers, we walk verse by verse through Mark Chapter 3, where dry places meet divine power, and opposition rises as healing flows.

We open with the man whose hand is withered—dry, restricted, and unable to function as it was designed. In the middle of religious tension and hardened tradition, Jesus steps in and restores what life had taken and what religion had withered. This moment becomes more than physical healing—it becomes a picture of spiritual restoration, where what is dry and lifeless is made whole again by the authority of Christ.

From there, we see the growing divide between those who are drawn to Jesus and those who resist Him. Accusations rise, hearts harden, and yet Jesus continues in power—casting out, healing, and revealing that the kingdom of God is not bound by systems of control or external appearance.

Then Jesus appoints the twelve—ordinary men called into an extraordinary mission. This is where identity shifts: not just followers of a teacher, but those sent with authority and purpose.

Finally, Jesus redefines family itself. When told His mother and brothers are outside, He declares that His true family are those who do the will of God. In this moment, proximity to Jesus is no longer defined by bloodline or tradition, but by obedience and alignment with the Father.

This chapter confronts us with a question: are we living in dryness and restriction, or are we receiving the living work of Christ that restores, calls, and redefines everything?

BibleBangers continues chapter by chapter, verse by verse—digging deep into the Word, where healing flows, and dry places come alive.

Every wish you could actually understand. That's a really good idea. Line by line. Reliable. Engaging. Welcome to Bible Bangers Podcast. The Deep Edible Ministries Studio Production. Well, welcome to Bible Bangers. Welcome back. Let's get right into our Father's word at Mark chapter three. You ready for a recap today?

SPEAKER_01

Given it, you always put this pressure on me. So at the end of chapter 2, you know, we had the son of man, the the authority. And I thought I don't think that it's a uh coincidence. I think it's a God instance that the first thing that we see here is a man with a withered hand. And kind of that uh the symbol of that authority, I believe, is the is the right hand. I always used to kind of look at this as, you know, he was probably a working man and he probably couldn't work, couldn't provide, he couldn't do any of those things. He probably wasn't allowed into the into the temple. Um, I'm not sure about the synagogue rules, you know, as we discussed a little bit earlier today, but um I like the fact that you know Christ is bringing us a witness to who he is, and he's allowing everybody that same um the same presentation of it, right? Like we get it as the ideal servant here in Mark, but um you, I throughout history, everybody could see who Christ is presenting himself as, and then they can make a decision, right? There's a there's a flow to it, and um I I think that once we get into three here, it's just gonna be more reveal revelation of the um hardness of some hearts and others that are just wide open to it. So the disciples get deeper, um, and then the the opposition also kind of gets gets to the point to where they're starting to plot to kill them.

SPEAKER_00

In chapter two, we had three main teachings that apply well to chapter three: the Son of Man, Lord of the Sabbath, the cloth sewn onto a cloth, and the wineskins. And that teaching is gonna apply here in the fact that he is going to take those cloths and those wineskins and he's gonna go right to them with who he is, what his authority is, um, where he's at spiritually, and the seeds that have been sown are going to start to produce seed. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Fruit one way or another. Right, yeah. Which one, two, and three kind of give us that intro into chapter four, which we'll get to.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So I say produce seeds because the word is going out. Yeah. Fruit is gonna come. It's a lot of negative fruit, is the focus in the first two and three. Yeah. But it's being blazed about. It's the the whole the whole world is changing through the seeds that he's sowing, and seeds are coming back. Yeah. You are in a head in three, please.

SPEAKER_01

I'm reading a literal translation, I think. And again he entered into the synagogue, and there was a man who had a withering of hand, and they watched him whether he will heal him on the Sabbaths, that they might accuse him. What is the withering? It's a uh I think it's a withdrawal of moisture, if I'm not mistaken.

SPEAKER_00

So if we were to try to figure out what that applies spiritually, what would that be?

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I think it's there's no power, there's no authority there, there's or it's being taken away that in the process of being taken away.

SPEAKER_00

Kinda know what it is at the end of this chapter, and you have uh read ahead. Yeah, you always gotta read ahead. You gotta follow this through.

SPEAKER_01

Verse three. And he said to the man who had a withering of hand, or withered hand, rise up into the middle, stand forth. And he said to them, to them now, is it lawful to do good on the Sabbaths or to do evil? Question mark. To save a soul or to kill, question mark. But they were silent, like those demons, you know? Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Save a soul. Some some serious insight here into what he's doing. He's it's not just a physical healing.

SPEAKER_01

It shows you what the withered hand really is. There you go. Verse 5. And having looked around on them with anger, being greatly grieved over the hardness of their heart, he said to the man, stretch out your hand. And he stretched out, and his hand was restored, sound as the other.

SPEAKER_00

Something very particular to the servant here, and it's emotion. You know, he he looked around about and he's and he and he was grieved. He saw the hardness of their hearts, but he was grieved. He is a heart in oar. Yeah, and I think I think there's a lot of uh dryness happening in the nation of Israel, if you will, and there's not a lot of emotion, there's not a lot of there's real strict legalism, adherence to the law, and making their own stuff up, and the the water that comes forth from that rock, which is in front of them, is isn't there.

SPEAKER_01

And the uh what who he is, and you know, and then even though they read about it in Moses and coming out of Egypt, right? They they read about this rock being struck and the water coming out of it, they've lost that. It's it's long gone, right?

SPEAKER_00

Right. That's why Paul spoke that it was weak in the flesh. You know, what the law had intended failed because of the hardness of hearts and the weakness of flesh. And so a dryness of a hand in this miracle, it's no coincidence.

SPEAKER_01

So he restored it sound as the other, and going out, the Pharisees at once or immediately took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.

SPEAKER_00

One of the things that stands out to me when they take counsel with the Herodians in Matthew chapter 12, it says that Christ went to their synagogue. So that was his purpose. He went to their synagogue. It wasn't the same synagogues that we were at before. He was in the jurisdiction of Herod. He was north, he was he was in that specific where the Herodians were. And he went into their synagogue and beckoned this man to come in with him. Yeah. And then they, of course, they watched him. Yeah. They watched him keenly with accusation.

SPEAKER_01

It's always a good sign of somebody that's not necessarily uh walking in the in the right spirit as they should be. And then watching to accuse, right? Versus watching to you know understand and be a part of that miracle. Uh verse 7. Jesus withdrew to the sea with his disciples, and a great multitude from Galilee and from and from Judea followed him.

SPEAKER_00

Real quick, back to six. The destroy there. Have you ever looked up that destroy?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Apol Apollyomi. Apollumi.

SPEAKER_01

Easy for me to say.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. It's the same word that's used for Herod when he sent them forth to destroy the child. Okay. And it's it's the same exact word, and it's the same exact word as they took counsel against him for destruction, to destroy him. It's very specific. It's a war. And it's it's it's a war term about going into a field of battle to destroy your enemy. So Herod does it. They're in that right now, they're in that general area. Christ's life has been sought for this destruction from the enemy from Gith.

SPEAKER_01

Immediately into the wilderness, right? And the temptation and overcoming that, and then now it's along the way.

SPEAKER_00

Immediately, Christ said, You're gonna do the bidding of your father. And so when they go to seek to destroy him, they're going to do the bidding of their father. The destruction as it was first foretold.

SPEAKER_01

The the one that's actually already been pronounced sentenced on. Trying to take anybody with them that he can. And the seven from Judea followed him, eight, and also some from Jerusalem and from Edomia and beyond the Jordan, also those around Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude came to him hearing how much he was doing. Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing cometh by the word of God.

SPEAKER_00

They're from Galilee, a great multitude from Galilee and from Judea and from Jerusalem and from Idoma and from beyond Jordan. It's being spread.

SPEAKER_01

And uh 10, for he healed many so that they fell on him, that they might touch him, as many as had plagues. So that was the the witness from before, too, right? Like just touching the hem of the garment, just uh, you know, being around Christ will give you that healing. Well, that should be the that's the draw. So the witness goes out, the seeds go out, right? And then people start to talk about it, and then they're drawn, right? And some people are drawn for good, but others are drawn for opposition, you know, and we see we start to see that momentum build up on both sides of it. Yeah. More, more to the good, obviously, the the poor, the the sick, the unhealthy, right? The the sinners that needed that, needed forgiveness from the doctor.

SPEAKER_00

So when you've got this great bunch that they just listed from Galilee and Jerusalem, so doesn't say that they followed him. No, doesn't say that they were believers, but they heard where they took that seed right then and there, we don't know.

SPEAKER_01

So it's exposure, right? They're they're being exposed to that, and then you have a decision to make, right? Are you gonna repent of your behavior? Are you gonna harden your heart? Are you what are you gonna do with that when Christ is presented to you? As many as had plagues, right? They just wanted, they wanted to come get that healing. Doesn't again, to your point, doesn't mean that they became followers. They just wanted the physical blessing, they wanted the physical filling of the tummy. Sometimes those are they're looking for that king or whatever that's gonna uh make their life easier. Doesn't necessarily happen with with Christ. When you're abiding in Christ, the world is persecuting you, right? Just as it did to him, as we as we see. Eleven. And when the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, saying, You are the Son of God. And he warned them very much that they should not reveal him. And he straightly charged them. What is that witness of a demon, really? And it's like that's a spiritual picture, like a spiritual manifestation of what the Herodians and what the Pharisees and what the scribes were doing, right? So it doesn't say that a Pharisee has a demon, but they're acting in that same characteristic, except for the demons know that they got no power, right? The Pharisees still think they're in control of all this.

SPEAKER_00

And so, and they he charges them not to make them known, which is manifest. And and honestly, they don't have that ability anyway. Because we're gonna see that here in a second with Peter, that only God has that ability. They can broadcast it and they can do whatever, but he's given them a commandment that you know about 13.

SPEAKER_01

And he went up into the mountain and called near whom he desired, and they went to him. And he made disciples of twelve that the might be with him, and that they might send them, that he might send them to proclaim and to have authority to heal diseases and to cast out demons. It's like there's a progression, calls them, they come to be with him at his feet, learning, and then he sends them out. I think a lot of times, you know, maybe that's uh the Matthew 723-ish type of believer, if you will, that never got to know Christ, but they still, in his authority, in that unwithered hand, they're still casting out demons and they're still healing the sick because his name is very powerful, but they never bothered to do it. They did it for their own credit or their own glorification or whatever. Yeah. And he put and he surnamed Peter, and Simon, he surnamed Peter, and uh James, the son of Zebedee, and John John, the brother of James, and he put on them names uh Boenerges. Is that how you say that? Boenergis. Which is sons of thunder, and Andrew, that would be uh Peter's brother, and Philip and Bartholomew, which is also, I believe, Nathanael. He's the Nathanael from John chapter 1. And Matthew, also Levi, and Thomas and James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him, and they went into a house. Went into a house.

SPEAKER_00

Anything, anything in particular about the calling? It's kind of interesting that he gave them power, and this is authority. And he all the way through he's been showing his authority with his words and with his actions, and and now he's taken that authority and he's delegated it. That's a good leader, what, right?

SPEAKER_01

That's just a picture of to today, even, right? Like Christ has given us that power and that authority. When you when you operate within his the obedience of of him, of following him, right? Power and the word.

SPEAKER_00

Sons of thunder. I think that there's probably a reference to Hebrew, which the the word for thunder is the same word for the voice, the voice of God. And it's coal, I think, in Hebrew, and it it it's uh it's a thundering, it's uh it's a shaking, it's earth shaking, it's you know, it's what was experienced on the mountain, you know, and he's a son of that.

SPEAKER_01

That's a pretty good, that's a pretty good um, you know, tagline to to have hanging over you.

SPEAKER_00

Well you think you think about the son of God, you know, and the voice of God, the words of God is thundering right now. Yeah. Praise the Lord, amen. And uh it's going through and and it's shaking it up.

SPEAKER_01

Uh 20. And again, uh a crowd came together so as they were not able even to eat bread. It's crowded in there. And hearing uh those with him, his friends, his kinfolk, went out to take hold of him, for they said, he is out of wits, he's beside himself.

SPEAKER_00

The great crowd that is here that can't even eat bread is that whole list that we had in, what was it, verse 7? The uh the understanding of of the physical versus the the spiritual here is gonna start to be chiseled away. Now he's gonna teach them. So we had seeds, you know, and and then that seed gets pounded into bread, and here it comes.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. And coming down from Jerusalem, the scribe said he has Beelzebub, and he casts out demons by the ruler of the demons. They must have had a little conference back up there in Jerusalem in the big big city, and decided this was gonna be the best approach. This is how we're gonna get him. They're gonna come tell him. We've got to give him a tak-adu. 23. And calling them near, he spoke to them in parables saying, So you remember, Christ said that they reasoned in their hearts.

SPEAKER_00

And then they come up with these reasons, right? And they reasoned in their heart, and the best thing they can come up with is you're the prince of demons. Yeah, you're BLC. So apparently there's one, there's one higher than the devil now, and he's here. They're amending their doctrines now because of Christ.

SPEAKER_01

Well, they either have to repent and get on board, right? Or they gotta self-justify, they gotta, you know, continue to maintain their stature because he's taken away, he's shown that they don't have any authority. He has all the authority.

SPEAKER_00

That's what this is all about. That's what this is all about. It's about a transfer of power. And it happened with with John the Baptist uh when he was at the river watching them, and it no longer was happening in the temple. Oh my gosh, what's going on around here? Right? So now it's come all the way.

SPEAKER_01

John the Baptist, strict according to the letter of the law, right? A son of a Levite, you know, a son of a priest, and they they weren't hearing it then either, right? So eventually he's taken and you know, kidnapped and got his head cut off. But Jesus is like, okay, well, then I'm gonna eat and drink with sinners and publicans, and I'm gonna show you the other side of it, the grace of it all, right? Still, still teaching the truth, as John did, right? But showing that fulfillment in Jesus, right, right? And then there's that they they're still jumping in between their truth. They got they got they got no. So it's nothing to stand.

SPEAKER_00

So we're we're in agreement that they're on the outside. Yeah, they are definitely on the outside. And thank thanks be to God that we're not out there either, right? Well, you know, blessed be the Holy Spirit and the death and the resurrection of Christ that we can have it and not be on the outside anymore. Amen. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So I'm gonna finish 23. How can Satan cast out Satan? He called him near. He said, listen, you're on the outside, but I'm gonna call you near. How can Satan cast out Satan? And if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house is not able to stand. And if Satan rise up, uh rises upon himself and has been divided, he is not able to stand. But he has an end. No one, not any, having entered into his house, is able to plunder the vessels of the strong one unless he first tie up the strong one, then he plunders his house. So Christ is saying in a parable, this is what I'm doing. You're classifying me as Beelzebub, right? Like I'm Satan, but I'm I'm showing you what I'm doing. I'm I'm I've entered into this world and I'm binding it, right? This the strong one. And he's spoiling his house. He's spoiling his house. Not the other way around. Satan's had his time.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Christ is overcoming that. He's gonna be overturning tables and making whips and driving him out of here. There you go. 28. And truly I say to you, all the sins will be forgiven to the sons of men. And whatsoever blasphemies that they have blasphemed. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit has no remission unto the age, but is liable to eternal judgment. Because, and this is unique to Mark, because they said he has an unclean spirit. The other two occurrences, they they take a little bit different picture at it, or like Matthew, I think shows you levels, right?

SPEAKER_00

And Luke is a little bit different. uh from that even but mark is showing it's showing the meaning of the minding of the strongman and what you're saying he's doing and this is why you you and I had the conversation that I that I believe that this is something that you can't entirely do because if you're enlightened and you're in Christ's camp yeah you're you know this they're they're stopping people from receiving Christ they're stopping this the seeds and right that's their whole mission right now they're they've settled on it they're like right we're we're putting an end to this and this is the the path I'm choosing or they've chosen to put an end to it and Christ is like no it's not happening yeah but you're in danger right of this eternal judgment because you're you're clearly seeing that Christ is who he claims to be and yet you're turning away from it right the only way that you can have forgiveness for these blasphemies and these other things is if you're abiding in Christ.

SPEAKER_01

And they're they're knowingly and willingly turning from that. Now I would imagine there's some hardening going on intentionally so that they would crucify our Lord and Savior. Thank goodness he's the judge. That's right that's right. 31 then so I don't know if this the kinsfolk from earlier was like maybe a little bit more outskirty uh but now he's got his mother and his brothers coming so 31.

SPEAKER_00

Then his mother and brothers came and standing outside they sent to him calling him they're also outside yeah but they're trying to get him to come outside they want to come outside let's have you know let's have a talk and they're more than likely going to take him away a little intervention.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah that's their whole plan he's out of his mind let's go get him and a crowd sat around him and a crowd sat around him and they said to him Behold your mother and your brothers seek you outside it's time to go home Jesus and he answered them saying Who is my mother and my brothers and having looked around on those sitting around him in a circle those paying attention to them those wanting to hear more and and to understand more those desiring to be disciples in his inner circle. Take the picture yeah the circle outside the circle inside the circle there's uh the prepositions used in the New Testament show paint a perfect picture of that too like para and whatever in and out and all those sorts of things but and he looked around on those sitting around him in a circle behold said and he said behold my mother and my brothers gives a whole new meaning to the family circle that's my family circle right here for whoever does the will of God this one is my brother and my sister and my mother cutting those family ties those blood family ties sort of right like because we know he's the will of God is to have Christ in the center of your circle and anything on the outside you protect that from coming there to you and that's why he says these are my this is my mother and my brothers and my sister that's awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Yes praise the Lord thank you for hanging out with us and studying with us this week in Mark chapter three let's make a pact together and prepare for next week chapter four see you then
