Hello everybody. Welcome to Snacks What You Get, the weekly podcast where mother and son review snacks and discuss what they've eaten this week. I'm Chris, the son, and this is Debbie.
SPEAKER_00And Mum.
SPEAKER_02Welcome back to another week. Hello, everybody.
SPEAKER_00Hello.
SPEAKER_02Just as a aside, we're gonna have this being our first on time official launch. Uh do a bit of housekeeping at the beginning, and we'll try and use the start as housekeeper, I guess, going forward if there is any before we go into our first segment.
SPEAKER_00Good idea.
SPEAKER_02And um, so yes, this week just wanted to explain to everybody that we uploaded four episodes that we'd built up in the background. Whilst we were just sorting some things out, coming up with you know a name and things like that. We added them in afterwards, and uh yeah, we thought we'd build them up, but instead of drip feeding the one per week, we decided to jump straight in and we dropped them all in one go, and then uh this week or this episode that we're recording now will be our first official uh on time at the time we're launching, and it will be on Tuesday nights going forwards. So we record them on a a Friday or a Saturday before and then edit and add it on the Tuesday night.
SPEAKER_00This is exciting, go on. Very exciting. Go on, tell us how many people have downloaded our popcorn.
SPEAKER_02Well, currently, for those first four episodes, we've got 51 downloads so far. Wow, that's amazing. I know we'll try we'll try and try and keep our heads small enough to be able to fit out the door. But yeah, fifth 51 so far. Um, which is very exciting for us. So thank you, everyone who's listened.
SPEAKER_00Yes, thank you. We really do appreciate it.
SPEAKER_02We do, we really appreciate it, and um, yeah, this is a bit of fun, and it's we we're hoping others are enjoying it too. Yeah, and they've been all around the world, you know, lots of people in America and variety places as well as as well as the UK.
SPEAKER_00So because that's what's so interesting is that you get a breakdown of where people have downloaded it from, don't you?
SPEAKER_02You do, you do get breakdown from um variety places, so very clever, yeah, and uh very interesting. So yes, well, without further ado, we'll uh head into it, our first section of new bites.
SPEAKER_00New bites.
SPEAKER_02So, this week, what is your new bite, mum?
SPEAKER_00Well, this was a very exciting one, I'm not gonna lie. And a big shout out to my boss at work for buying this for me. But it was a good exactly a freebie. Uh it was a cinnamon cinnamon, sorry, bakery-inspired muffin. Okay, and it was filled with the signature cinnamon and irresistible cream cheese flavour frosting.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that sounds delicious.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it was. I'm not gonna lie, that was a very nice muffin. It was a very light, the sponge was very light.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, the cinnamon inside was delicious, and it's cream cheese frosting, lovely.
SPEAKER_02Because I I like cinnamon or cinnamon bun stuff. I've never actually had a Cinnabon from I have. Okay, yeah, and and or I mean I say from America, I'm sure they do they do have some over here, I think.
SPEAKER_00But well, they used to have stores over here, but I think they've all closed. I think they're online only now.
SPEAKER_02Because you can order them online, is what you were saying.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, there used to be one in Southampton because we used to go there.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00And I've had a proper one.
SPEAKER_02Cinnabon, yeah. Well, I like cinnamon bun flavour stuff, so that sounds delicious. And you say it was good.
SPEAKER_00It was really good.
SPEAKER_02And where is that from again?
SPEAKER_00Um, these are $149 for two, and they're available in Aston at the moment.
SPEAKER_02That's that's not too bad, is it $149? Were the decent sizes?
SPEAKER_00The box looks like a normal, like decent size, but decent size, they're not a big muffin.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00More like on on the sort of large cupcake size.
SPEAKER_02Right, okay. But you felt if you had bought them, obviously you felt they would have been alright value.
SPEAKER_00Definitely. Yeah. Very, very nice flavour to them.
SPEAKER_02Good.
SPEAKER_00What about yourself?
SPEAKER_02Well, not that we've announced the theme yet, but unintentionally on the theme, I had this week uh Morrison's Mango and Passion Fruit Donuts.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that sounds nice.
SPEAKER_02They were very nice. They're from the uh is it called what do they call it? Make Baker Street, no? Yeah. Yeah, is it something like that? With basically the in-house bakery uh bit there. They made them made them in store and delicious. I'd say very nice. Uh they it was nice and sweet, but also quite flavourful of the fruit and tangy. It's basically just a jam donut that they've replaced the jam with this mango passion fruit. Well, I guess it is a jam on there as well. It wasn't a curd, so it was definitely a jam.
SPEAKER_00Oh interesting.
SPEAKER_02Really nice. I I do think Morrisons do the best supermarket donuts like that.
SPEAKER_00I agree.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't know what it is about them, whether I'm not saying like, oh, they have to taste fried, but they taste a bit more like, even though I'm pretty sure they're not, like they've been fried or something. It's the way they the the outside goes a little bit crispy if you know what I mean, but the inside is still soft and lovely.
SPEAKER_00Nice.
SPEAKER_02Um, whereas other supermarkets I feel like don't ever achieve that.
SPEAKER_00But they don't get the right colour on them a lot of times, they're always quite pale, aren't they?
SPEAKER_02So the other ones, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Almost anemic, I would say.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I agree. But no, the these were very nice. Um on there, I still got some left because it was a pack of five, and it's a pound for a pack of five, which well, you can't argue with that, can you? Yeah, I I know donuts will be cheap to make, but I feel like that's like quite a good price point for them. Yes, you know, the in-house donuts. Um, but yeah, I packs of five are always a bit weird. Don't like that, you know, I've got even numbers.
SPEAKER_00It's an odd number, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02It is literally, and yeah, I just I I would prefer it was either four or six, but at a pound, willing to overlook that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean, trouble trouble with five is if you're a family of four, somebody's having two, and there's a fight, then isn't there?
SPEAKER_02Yep, true. If a family of four, and you know, if there's just a couple, someone's having having a third eventually on a day, um, on there, and it will be a me. So I just can say but it's you exactly no. Fortunately, Carly doesn't like donuts that much, so she doesn't pinch those. How strange. I know, but yes, well, that's um new bites for this week, and uh that leads us into our main segment then the tasting grounds. It's the tasting grounds. So this week we've got a bit of a theme in that these were all purchased in Morrison's, weren't they?
SPEAKER_00That was they were, they were all new products in Morrison's.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so the we aren't intentionally every week having a theme, but we are trying to look at the if we haven't just randomly bought them as we're going around or picked them up because we thought they looked nice, trying to see how we can connect them. In this case, they were all new and they're all from Morrison's. Yeah, and yes, we've got for the first time some savory savoury items as well as um some sweet items. So I think we should just get get into them.
SPEAKER_00What do you want to start with?
SPEAKER_02We'll start with these.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_02These are let me turn it around so I can read it. Uh these are bites, sweet chili and sour cream flavour by Jacobs. They are so Jacobs are cracker, the cracker makers.
SPEAKER_00And I thought they would be, although it says bites, I did think they would be crackers you could put cheese on, but having looking on the back of it, they do have a photo or a an image of them.
SPEAKER_02One has definitely been dipped, but the other one has some soft cream cheese with I would say chili jam on or something.
SPEAKER_00Do you know what? Dipping them's a good idea. They they good for dipping. I don't think they're good enough, uh big enough to put cheese on, but I suppose you could do.
SPEAKER_02You could put it'd be a small amount of cheese. I think that's why they've shown what I assume is a soft cheese spread on the back. Um on there. But yes, Jacobs are obviously very well known for their boxes of crackers and their general their crackers that we would put with cheese most often, wouldn't it? Yeah, yeah. Um, but these, yeah, these bites they look nice. Uh sweet chili and sour cream. Did you notice any other flavours?
SPEAKER_00Or they had lots of several flavours. I'm gonna say there was a smoke paprika one.
SPEAKER_02Oh, interesting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and um, I think there was a sour cream and chive one.
SPEAKER_02Nice, that's a bit of a classic, isn't it? But I agree, looking at it, I'd be wanting some hummus or some aioli or you know, one of those kind of I also think the cream cheese would be a good idea. Well, cream cheese, yes, or tapas style dip mix to dip them in. I think they would be delicious for that. Um, they are not the biggest items, no, but they're they're well, I suppose I guess like a normal size of a crisp, aren't they?
SPEAKER_00They're very thin though, aren't they?
SPEAKER_02They are very thin. I was just looking at that as I picked it up.
SPEAKER_00Um smells very nice though. Unusual, unusual shape to them as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's not it's it's like a slightly stretched hexagon, isn't it? It is well it is a hexagon, six sides, isn't it? So yeah, it is a slightly stretched hexagon um on that, and the packaging. So it's quite brightly red.
SPEAKER_01It is, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02It's um mildly striped, so it's like a darkener or lighter red, bites across the middle in a white band. Um I think it grabs you, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_00It does. I think it's quite striking, and also what is unusual is the uh there's a little green bit on the side which is almost sort of dented in, but they yes, they've they've deliberately like indented as you're looking at the front right.
SPEAKER_02Um the corner has definitely been like flattened in and says zingy on it, and is in a green and uh the words zingier and lighter green um on there. The yeah, they it's quite striking, I quite like it. Um they've got the photos of the item with its bits to assume the flavour. So you've got chilies on there and some sour cream things on there. So yeah, it looks nice. So sweet chili and sour cream flavour. Uh the box is 125 grams, the summit you get. And you said, is that the price on the front there? £1.25.
SPEAKER_00No, they were on offer because they knew, so I can't remember what the um normal price will be, but I did think it was a good buy at the time.
SPEAKER_02£125, that seems good at the moment. Yeah, that seems reasonable to buy. So, yeah, it says that oven baked on there.
SPEAKER_00So slightly healthier then.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's trying to get uh in on that trend of not saying it is um it's fried basically on there, trying to advertise it on there. I will say one thing that is a bit cheeky is the grayed out traffic light system they do on there. Yeah, that is a choice. They don't have to legally they've got display, I believe well, I believe they have to display a serving, calories, fat, saturated, everything like that, but they don't legally have to traffic light it like that. It's a bit of a choice, so that's why they've grayed it out there.
SPEAKER_00And that's a bit naughty, Jacobs.
SPEAKER_02I think I do I agree, I do think it's a bit naughty. I think on all these, it feels like an attempt at deception of the on the consumer, but there we go. We shall see. So these say 125 grams, 25 grams of the serving. So five servings in that. Again, I think that's optimistic to get past two, isn't it? But yeah, we've just thrown it, just thrown it on the floor.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we've just got a box of crumbs there.
SPEAKER_02But fortunately, we'd portioned some up. So shall we give them a go? Yes. So shall we give them a go?
SPEAKER_00Yes, very, very nice, lovely light texture, really nice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, really light and crispy. Um, they are thinner than a cracker. Yeah, they don't take much to break, but it's a real crisp snap, isn't it? Yeah, it's on there, which is really, really satisfying and tasty. Yeah, sour cream and like flavour at the front. So they actually taste quite creamy, which is a bit odd because they're so crunchy, but in a really nice way.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Again, there's a bit of a smell of sweet chili, and if you if you smell them, but uh yeah, I didn't really get any flavour of chili at the very back. I agree. There's a little bit of heat on the tongue, a little bit there, but not not much. Um, yeah, I'd eat them, I could eat them like crisps.
SPEAKER_00Well, to be fair, yeah. I do think they'd be ideal for dips.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I agree. I agree that for dipping, that's an ideal item. I agree. Yeah, and we we did look up the other flavours in the end. We thought we'd better do it. So, what have you got for us? What are the other flavours of them?
SPEAKER_00So they do five flavours in total. The obviously the um sweet chili and sour cream that we've just had. Yeah, we also do smoked paprika, mature cheddar and onion, nice, red leicester, okay, and Frank's red hot original KM pepper sauce.
SPEAKER_02So I'm kind of glad they did the Frank's one because the other ones, I know we'd said earlier we thought it was a sour cream one, but a chive. Um, because that is a very cut or sour cream and onion, but no, it was the cheddar and onion. But I'm glad they did the Frank's one because that's something a bit different. The others are a bit safe. Yeah. I would have thought, you know, that's that's very basic what you'd expect out of this item flavouring. But actually, the Franks one's interesting. But I am glad we didn't get it today, just in case they were a bit hot.
SPEAKER_00Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I fancy, I really fancy the red Leicester ones because I think them that texture of um cracker, cheesy flavour, yeah, I would be eating them like crisps.
SPEAKER_02Yes, but I I do think this is a good flavour for dipping, though. I think um honestly if you have some hummus or something similar, I I could easily see that being a popular.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're they're they're delightful.
SPEAKER_02They are delightful, and actually, I think uh the price is quite good. Yeah, the but I'm not saying like it's the biggest box in the world, and yeah, I'm not saying you get get loads, but I think actually 125 on offer. It now, did it did it say when you're researching what the full price is?
SPEAKER_00It does. It they they are two gonna be normally be two pounds.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so two pounds starts to push it into the category of like if you're getting a uh share a bag of crisps, yes, um, of the nicer, I say nicer, that's probably incorrect, but of the more premium brands, like on offer sensations, on offer materials, on offer kettle chips. Not obviously a standard price because that's crazy, but what's the best before date?
SPEAKER_00Just wondering if I should stock up on those for Christmas.
SPEAKER_02That is a very last the best before date on these is no 25th of the seventh, 26th.
SPEAKER_00So not quite a long time. So only a month on them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Only about a month. Okay, yeah. So don't stock up on them.
SPEAKER_00But no, because if I did, I'd have to eat them all.
SPEAKER_02Oh, exactly. Yeah, yeah. But maybe set a calendar reminder in middle of December early December to pick them up.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yeah, they were lovely.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, absolutely delicious. I really liked them. Texture wise, I liked them as well. So yeah, so with all that in mind, price obviously been quite a large factor. What what would you score out of ten?
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna give them an eight.
SPEAKER_02Yeah?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I liked them. When they're on offer, they're very good value. I I thoroughly enjoyed them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm gonna give them an eight as well because I think it's it's hard to know. I think the problem with trying to go any higher is then we're we're sort of saying that you can't get better, you know. But I think for what they are, they're exactly what I wanted them to be. Yeah, and I think an eight is a good good one on there. Not on offer. It's it's hard to say, I'd have to try them with dips, other things, and see if they are as versatile as I'd want them to be and therefore deserving of staying at that rate. But at 125, I think that's to be honest, quite a bargain for what they are.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, right, on to our next item. Which would you like to pick from our selection?
SPEAKER_00Oh, well, I think best we do the other savory items.
SPEAKER_02Well, yep, so savory item here. We have got crispy chili oil crunch corn from the brand proper.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02There we go. So, yes, this is it's more of a bag, isn't it, than a than a bottle?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like a pouch.
SPEAKER_02It's a pouch of um this. And so, yeah, crispy chili oil crunch corn. Now I like, as you're aware, mum, I like the crispy chili oil, which I believe was a bit of a TikTok sensation of just something that makes stuff better. And I agree.
SPEAKER_00I I I like crispy chili oil as well.
SPEAKER_02There you go.
SPEAKER_00I have if I have a couple of jars of that, or I am going through my couple of jars of that.
SPEAKER_02So these, I'm trying to see how they describe it. Corn, it's a corn snack with crispy chili oil flavour seasoning on top. So a corn snack. To be honest, I see this brand a lot properly.
SPEAKER_00Um popcorn water, I think.
SPEAKER_02Yes. I've never actually had any myself.
SPEAKER_00They have done, which I have had, um savoury popcorn. And I have bought not their brand of corn snacks, but I have bought corn snacks before, yeah, and enjoyed them.
SPEAKER_02Well, firstly, I quite like the branding. The yeah, the logo is what I recognise on there, pro it's proper, it's a big white um rectangle with the word proper in it, quite a nice font in the middle, um, on their all capitals, and that's stuck on the front of a quite a bright red uh packaging. It's got the items of corn are sort of scattered on it, and it's got a mouth and a chili and all sorts of little bits on there, but I think overall it's quite pleasing. What I do like, even though I may not be able to, it may be wasted on me, is on the back. I don't know if you saw this one when you did this, they've got crispy chili oil, they've got tasting notes.
SPEAKER_00Oh no, I didn't see that.
SPEAKER_02No. So on it says at the top, a drizzle of high octane heat, in the middle, crispy, crackly onions, and the bass flavour is bold fiery crunch. They're the bass notes. So chef's kiss, tongue-tingling chili heat, zinger zing ah. That's what it says on that. See, I like that. I like that, you know, having a bit of play with it, a bit of fun. So, yeah, I quite like the packaging. It's a pouch, so you rip it open, reseal.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's got I like the fact that it's got the resealable, yeah.
SPEAKER_02One of those push together ones on there, not sticky, so you can't like lose the the tab to do the sticky. It's uh pop one on there.
SPEAKER_00And they they were on offer for £1.50.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because see that £1.50 for a £125 bag. So the same as the Jacobs bytes um size, but obviously a different different item and slightly more expensive in this case, but were they on offer or were they they they were on the air or not?
SPEAKER_00So they were will normally be £2.25, but they were down to £1.50.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Again, not in the million miles away from the price on the bites, but 25p more in each way. Um but yeah, so you like the packaging?
SPEAKER_00I do. It's eye-catching.
SPEAKER_02Eye-catching, the branding's quite clear and yeah, it says high in fibre on the front, and they they quite um obviously quite proud to display, I guess, because it's in a big white box on the back to say natural flavouring, plant-based, and gluten-free.
SPEAKER_01Interesting, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. Yep, so we got all that on there.
SPEAKER_01Alright.
SPEAKER_02Should we give it a go?
SPEAKER_00Yes. Well, they were a little bit spicy.
SPEAKER_02I like I like I like a bit more spice than you. Yeah, and um, I didn't think they were they were spicy, but there's definitely it's like a building heat.
SPEAKER_00It builds. The first few, I thought, oh, these are nice, gotten a getting a bit of a chilly flavour, but after I've had a a couple of mouthfuls, I was like, actually, the heat is building on this, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, by the end of the the portion we'd given ourselves, I could definitely feel the heat. But I wasn't I I thought it was quite a nice heat to be fair. I I I really liked those. Uh texture-wise, it was perfect. I don't know what I expected on there. I think the the crispy chili oil bit makes me want to think of the crispy chili oil that you have and put in, but actually, it they just taste like chili. There's no I wouldn't say there's any like discerning feature to them that makes them taste more like a type of chili.
SPEAKER_00No, I I think it's a gimmick, isn't it? Crispy chili.
SPEAKER_02The crispy, I guess, plays into they are crispy. Yeah, yeah, they are crunchy. So I really liked the texture uh on it. I I would get well, I probably would get those again to be fair. They are there, but I'd love to try their other flavours because that texture is very nice as a savory snack.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and the other flavours they do are bar well, the proper ones are they do a barbecue crunch and a salt crunch.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, both sound tasty. And yes, if they've got that texture, I'd I'd be well up for that. But yeah, I think saying crispy chili oil is sort of, as you say, a little bit gimmicky to play into the fact how popular that stuff is now.
SPEAKER_00I think so, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But it does, I think, work because they are crispy.
SPEAKER_00They are very they are very nice. They are very nice. So they're about the size of a sweet corn, right? Yeah. Well they are it's literally baked sweet corn, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02Yes, it is, but as in if anyone's unsure on there, it's not popcorn kernels like that size.
SPEAKER_00It's not, no.
SPEAKER_02You know, it is uh basically, yeah, you take a piece of sweet corn and bake it um on there. So they're not they're not tiny, tiny, but they are small. Um but you would say that sorry that was too hot for you, you think?
SPEAKER_00That I I yeah, but I wasn't too keen on the spice level we got towards the end of those.
SPEAKER_02Fair enough.
SPEAKER_00I still liked them, don't get me wrong, I still liked them, but I don't think I would buy that flavour again. I would buy one of the others, I think.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but the texture makes you go, Oh, I'd I'd quite like that kind of stuff.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, they're n nice and crunchy and yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yes, very nice and crunchy. Um and so with that, scores.
SPEAKER_00Um I'm gonna go seven.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Purely because the heat and I know it's my own fault it says crispy chili oil on there. What did I think?
SPEAKER_02Maybe you couldn't, yeah, that's down to you.
SPEAKER_00It it it was still a relatively nice flavour, and they're very crunchy, and I did like them, but not as much as the other things.
SPEAKER_02No, that's fine. I'm I'm gonna go with an eight. I'm gonna go same again. I really liked them. I liked the spice levels, um, yeah, very, very tasty. And at £1.50 I think is a good price for them.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02£2.25 was it we said? I think that starts to push it again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But uh £1.50, definitely. I think that they're definitely something I would pick up, and actually it reminds me to the these two have both reminded me to look at more savory snacks when you're in a bit of a snacky mood, not just go for the sweet, because I actually really enjoyed those.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, very nice.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Well, we'll move so well, just to clarify, seven from you, eight from me. Uh on there. And now our next item. Which one should we go? Should we go for the biscuits?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, go for the biscuits. Well, the cookies.
SPEAKER_02Cookies, apologies. So for our next item, we've got cherry bakel cookies or all-butter cherry bakewell cookies from Morrison's The Best Range. These are a limited edition, says on here. Again, how limited, not sure, but limited edition. And it says these cookies are made with nibbed almonds and packed with chewy sour cherry pieces.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that sounds nice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so reading the the blurb. It says the best all-butter cherry bag or cookies, all butter cookies with almonds, sweetened dried cherries, and sweetened dried cranberries. Okay. Yeah, true. Box, very in keeping with the best brand if you've seen them on there. Looks a lot to be fair, like all the seven markets when they do their slightly nicer cookies. Now, these are not the fresh cookies, these are packaged well, in a box. You get eight in the pack. Eight. In a little plastic thing inside with two sides to it, four on each side. And yeah, this colour going for the um cherry bakewell colour. Looks a bit like they've got like a muted, muted, reddy pink colour on there. Um, which I think is quite nice with the dark blue for the best that we have.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, it's nice packaging. It's your all all the whole range of cookies is is in that packaging, and the only thing that's different is obviously the picture of the cookie on the front and the colour. So that is their colour for the cherry belly quell.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so the the bit that's blue will be the same on all of them because that's the best range, and the logo will be. But yes. Now these were £2.50 for 8 MC on there. Which again we're starting to push on there for a supermarket owned brand. I know it's their nicer range, it's still a supermarket owned brand, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02And I would say these are competing with the Fox's, you know, cookies you get in a packet. Now they don't come in a box, these come in the box, they are, but they are delicious, yes, they are. So, yeah, interesting. I feel like that's where the the brand competitor I'd be looking at is, and they're very similar price to that. So we'd have to see well, we'll have to see how they they go, but it's 200 grams. So what's that? 25 grams per cookie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And you did say your first thought when you saw them was they are a bit small.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I'm a little bit disappointed. They do do look rather small, you know, for yeah. When when you say cookie, I expect something slightly bigger.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00To me, this is more sort of what I would say biscuit sized.
SPEAKER_02To be fair, it might be the size of a digestive, like widthwise on that. I mean, oh, we've got the taint measure out.
SPEAKER_00Six centimetres.
SPEAKER_02Six centimetres wide. Yeah. So that doesn't sound cookie size to me. It's not much over two inches, is it, for for anyone listening. Um it goes that weight.
SPEAKER_00No, it's just just over two, just over two and a quarter inches.
SPEAKER_02Um not very large.
SPEAKER_00And there's only eight in the box.
SPEAKER_02And there's only eight. So well, we've got to bear that in mind. And at £2.50, we'll see. But yeah, that's a good point. What do they smell like? Reasonably cherry baked.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, I'm getting I'm getting the almond.
SPEAKER_02Which is the almond and a bit of sweetness in the background there for it. But yeah, so shall we give them a go?
SPEAKER_01Yes, let's.
SPEAKER_02That was interesting. I don't think there was a clear for me, it wasn't all of it was good or all of it was bad. I think it was quite a mixture.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was um I like the cherries in there. They were very nice.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I did find the almond flavour a little bit false, maybe a little bit See.
SPEAKER_02I didn't I wasn't picking particularly up on that. Doesn't mean it wasn't, it just preferences. I obviously didn't mind that. I liked the cherries, as you say. They were quite chewy, they were nice. I liked overall the flavour personally. The texture for me let it down, but not because it wasn't good, it's just not what I wanted or expected. It was a little bit soft for those type of cookies. They normally got a little bit more a little bit more of a crunch, too. Yeah, just a little bit more. It's like they've been underbaked by a couple of minutes, you know, on there almost. Um, yeah, so that was a little bit of a shame, but overall I quite liked I I'm a big fan of cherry flavours and cherry bake well in general. I am so yeah, I I I those were right on my street, flavour-wise. Texture, yeah. I just for me a little bit soft, but other than that, I quite quite enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_00It was it was a nice, I'm gonna say biscuit because I it didn't feel like it was a it was crumbly, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_02It was a bit crumbly, it was a bit crumbly.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna say it was a biscuit, it's more of a biscuit than a cookie, nice flavour-wise, wouldn't turn them down. Not sure why I would go out of my way to buy them again.
SPEAKER_02Well, I think this is where we come on to the big one is the price. I do think at £2.50 that's a bit overpriced.
SPEAKER_00I don't think they were worth £2.50.
SPEAKER_02No, and I and I enjoyed mine, but I just really think that does it it just really weights it not positively, like it it's against it that price. Um, and I enjoyed them. I did I did enjoy them. I think at £2 you're pushing it, but I could potentially see that on offer at £1.25 or a pound, I'd buying them all day.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, yeah, £2.50 for that pack, it just feels a bit it's not an outstanding cookie for £2.50.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. That you it's got to be it's got to hit all the markers, and I think it lets itself down a little bit with the texture, personally, anyway. But there we go. So yes, scores though. What what are you thinking?
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna go I'm gonna go six point five.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_00A little bit, I'm a little bit disappointed with the size of them, the texture of them, and then the price of them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so I'm gonna join you down there, but I'm going six. Oh, even lower. Even slightly lower, yeah, because my my biggest thing is there was the price and the texture. Flavors-wise, I liked it, and I thought they got I personally thought they got a right balance of of things, but the actual yeah, texture just being that not what I wanted. If I was buying them, I'd have a thing I want, which is like the competitors do, um, just a little bit firmer, crunchier, like snap, more snap to it, just a little bit more um on there, and they just didn't have that. And then at that price, at £2.50, it's a that's a commanding price, isn't it? It's quite it's it's quite an out there price that I just think it doesn't live up to.
SPEAKER_00It's supposed to be a luxury product, and I wasn't getting luxury from that.
SPEAKER_02I get the flavour is one of the more, you know, it's a it's not a bog standard, just milk chocolate one on there, but yeah, the actual quality of product didn't think was quite there. So there we go. Okay, and then on to our final product, which is actually um some sweets this time, isn't it? It is, and this is says new on the packet. Um squashies love hearts. So I don't know if swizzles who make um yeah, swizzles who make squashies, they must make love hearts because there's no collaboration on it, it doesn't say it just says love hearts and it's got made in the UK on the back. Always like to see that.
SPEAKER_00Oh good.
SPEAKER_02And yeah, they actually have a couple of um they tell you the flavours on the back.
SPEAKER_00Oh go on, go on, what are the flavours?
SPEAKER_02The the white one is I believe pineapple. We've ripped through it, that's also I'm guessing on the second part of the word there. Apologies. The the darker pink is cherry, green is lime, orange is orange, and yellow is lemon, and then the lighter pink is black currants. The pinky purpley lighter colour.
SPEAKER_00We haven't got one of those.
SPEAKER_02Oh no, we must have done.
SPEAKER_00Trying to think what we've got white, orange, green, yellow.
SPEAKER_02Either six, we've only got five. Oh, that's okay, we'll we'll we'll survive on that.
SPEAKER_00Well, we'll have to.
SPEAKER_02On there, okay. So, yes.
SPEAKER_00Oh, looking forward to trying the cherry one and the pineapple one, to be fair.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, so you've got the cherry, I've got the black currant. I think it is. I think on there. Yeah, I'm looking forward to these. I like squashies.
SPEAKER_00See I'm not a sweet person, I don't buy bags of sweets. I only pick those up because they were new. So this this'll be interesting to see.
SPEAKER_02Well, I like squashies, I like the texture and I like all the flavours that they do of it. Pretty much all of them. They they are one of my favourite sweets, I would say. And I do pick, I don't pick them up often, but they're a bit dangerous in the car because on a journey I can I can get through quite a few. But um, yeah, as a packet of sweets, uh, they are one of my favourites.
SPEAKER_00I like the way the sweets have got well, like love hearts, they've got something on them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so unlike so squashies normally are small rectangle ones, usually two colours. So the classic is like drumstick, you know, like the lolly um on there, so you'll have a pink and a white side on there. A bit like you remember the old magnets you get at school with the blue and red ones, yeah. It's like a small one of those, but the two colours, and then they do the different flavours, and all the time they're the opposite flavours. They do the you know, one size, one colour, one half the other colour. These are like love hearts that have been doubled in size, maybe triple in terms of width and everything, and they're made out of squashy material. So they say like love, sweet, they've got like happy faces on them, fab, things like that. So, yeah, interesting to look at. The packet, standard squashies packet, if anyone knows, like looking, except this one's white and pink striped, and then says love hearts in the love heart font across the front.
SPEAKER_00I thought the packaging was quite cute, actually.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's quite cute, quite pleasant. Shows all the different ones on the front of it, tells you its fruit flavours. Yeah, quite nice. I mean, it's a packet of sweets, isn't it? And then these are not it's a and the key thing is 90p, is that what you've written on thefer? Yeah, 90 pence.
SPEAKER_00So um I thought, as I'm not a sweet fan, but these were on offer, I thought I will pick them up.
SPEAKER_02It's 140 grams for 90 pence. So yeah, on offer, uh not on offer, I'd imagine that they're probably near a £1.50 or so.
SPEAKER_00More than likely. Seems to be sort of standard price for that that type of bag, doesn't it? Something like that. Normal price, so oh no, they were on offer. Normally they're a pound.
SPEAKER_02Okay, uh big saving then. There we go. Um, but yeah, a pound. I I like squashies, they're they're a well, I always think they're very well priced. The flavours are always good. Um, thing on there. So I'm excited by these ones because I haven't tried these ones. I don't know how new they are and if they're to stay one, but yeah, they look very good.
SPEAKER_00Okay, should we give them a go?
SPEAKER_02Let's give them a go.
SPEAKER_00Well, I like them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I really enjoyed them.
SPEAKER_00They are I'm I'm glad you could tell which was which flavour.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, very distinctive flavors. I mean, when you when I read them out, sorry, I I did think, oh, these are quite different um on there. Because normally squashies is a bag of one flavour of the squashies, so it was different to have a mixture. Um, and you're right, definitely distinctive flavouring, and you could taste what they actually tasted like.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, all very nice flavouring.
SPEAKER_02L it the the sweet itself was a little bit chewier than I was expecting, but I I'm not a sweet person, so I haven't had squashies, so I would say, as someone who does have squashies and likes them a lot, um, they're a little bit foamier than a standard squash, I feel like. Normally, squashies have a bit of a like sheen on the outside, right? Almost, and they're a little bit I would say chewier, a little bit less soft in some ways, still very soft and chewy and very pliable. But I would say that is a slightly different texture to how they normally are. But I still really enjoyed them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that I was surprised at how much I like them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and and the colours, you know, if anyone's had love hearts, it reminds you of that.
SPEAKER_00And yeah, they do, and the little kiss and smile and that's it. Yeah, and all the wording on them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no, I think it's really nice. And for 90p, I think that's pretty much.
SPEAKER_00Well, even at full price, they're only a pound. So I do think that is a bargain.
SPEAKER_02I I've always thought squashies are very well priced for what they are. As I say, I don't think I've ever paid more than a pound for for some because they're either always on offer or or only at that price. So yeah, it's a good price, and it's a reasonably standard-sized bag of sweets. The only thing with it is because they are bigger, these ones, than the normal squashies, it does look like you get less in them. I'm sure it weighs the same, but obviously, when you pick one up to have, you're having the equivalent of maybe two squashies in there.
SPEAKER_00I I thought they were nice. I I'm surprised.
SPEAKER_02And so then your score.
SPEAKER_00I'm oh that's a difficult one. I don't know. I'm touring between 7.5 and 8. I think I'll go eight because the flavour of each squashie was definitely there. I'm gonna go eight, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Nice. That that's that's a high score for you. Picky is you're not someone who likes sweets, so I wouldn't buy them again.
SPEAKER_00But I I like them, and if somebody offered them to me, I would take one. But yeah, I'm I'm I'm not a sweet person, I don't I don't generally buy bags of sweets.
SPEAKER_02See, I I am a sweet person and I would give them an 8.5. I honestly though, don't think there is a single variant of the squashies that gets less than an 8.5 in my mind. Fair enough. And I've tried I think I've tried them all at this point um on that, and I I like them all. So yeah, big squashies fan, and I would buy them again. I think they're very suitable addition to the lineup.
SPEAKER_00I think they're very good value for money, and the packaging's pretty, the flavours are all very nice. Yeah, they work.
SPEAKER_02There we go. So that is all of our items for the tasting grounds. On there. So that means we were into our final segment to Debbie's Fun Fact. Debbie's Fun Facts. What fact have you got for us this week, mum?
SPEAKER_00Well, in keeping with the Morrison's theme, I thought I'd find out an interesting or fun fact about Morrison's.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00So Morrison's actually dates back to 1899.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_00When William Morrison first opened an egg and butter store in Bradford.
SPEAKER_02Egg and butter.
SPEAKER_00Egg and butter is what he originally sold. All right. But these days, Morrison's is actually, and this I didn't know, the largest fish and chip chain in the UK. Thanks to its cafes, they sell over 1.8 million portions of fish and chips a year.
SPEAKER_02Wow.
SPEAKER_00I wouldn't have thought that, but uh I'm guessing they are nationwide, aren't they? Which is how they get that biggest change.
SPEAKER_02I guess so. And when you think about it as well, just take our local area.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02They are one of it out of the supermarkets there, they have a cafe and asda do.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02Sainsby's closed theirs. Yeah, they did, and all the other ones don't have them. So I mean the Tesco's in Dorch doesn't have one anymore.
SPEAKER_00No, they closed theirs years ago.
SPEAKER_02Years ago. Obviously, Audi and Lidl don't. And the new MS that's opening doesn't. So yeah, I think I think that's they they are pretty consistent in that offering, aren't they?
SPEAKER_00Yes, they are. They yeah, and it's always busy when you go in Morrison's the cafe is always busy.
SPEAKER_02I think actually, because we have eaten there, and obviously, I know you get a lot of the deals there, pretty well priced, and decent for the money. Like again, I'm not you're not going out for a gourmet meal, but I actually think it's cheaper or on par price-wise with somewhere like Weatherspoons, but often a little bit nicer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I I I do like the food in Morrison's cafes. I must have in fact, the Morrison's cafe down there has been extended in in Weymouth, yes, it has been extended, and also just as you go in the store, they've got a little coffee shop.
SPEAKER_02I was gonna say they've got two cafes technically. If you think of coffee and cafe like that, then yeah, they've got like a little coffee shop with some snacks and bits you can add on there, and then you actually go further down and you've got the main cafe where you order hot food. Um and yeah, but the largest in the country. It's interesting, isn't it? When you think that they sell that much fish and chips as well. They're not just the cafe's popular, they're selling more fish and chips than anyone else combined. Wow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I just thought that was interesting, and I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_02That is interesting. Well, well, brilliant. Oh, thank you for that fun fact. That was a great one this week. Um, thank you everybody for listening.
