Hello everybody. Welcome to Snacks What You Get, the weekly podcast where mother and son review snacks and discuss what they've eaten this week. I'm Chris, the son, and this is Debbie.
SPEAKER_01The mum.
SPEAKER_00Welcome back, everybody.
SPEAKER_01Hello.
SPEAKER_00So we're we're back for another week. Haven't got rid of us yet. So this week uh we're staring down the barrel of 84 downloads so far total. Wow. So yeah, very exciting.
SPEAKER_01That is exciting.
SPEAKER_00Hopefully, fingers crossed, we're gonna aim to try and get 100 before the next one after this.
SPEAKER_01I think we ought to have a party if we get to 100 downloads.
SPEAKER_00I I don't think that's a bad idea at all. Yeah, first hundred downloads. And if we can get there in less than 10 episodes, that's that's remarkable in my my eyes. Um yeah, very exciting. Um so yeah, we'll we'll jump on in it this week and we'll start with our new bites. So, what's your new bites for this week, mum?
SPEAKER_01Well, mine is something that came out last year, and they've bought it back this year. It's um the Marks and Spencer's red diamond strawberry and cream sandwich.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Sounds interesting. Strawberry strawberry and cream sandwich.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00I'm guessing Wimbledon summer picnic.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That that sort of the theme, I guess.
SPEAKER_01It's um I mean the strawberries, the red diamond strawberries, they were delicious in the sandwich, I'm not gonna lie.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01And they've paired it with whipped cream cheese in a sweetened bread for a delicious summer treat.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's a bit odd, isn't it? Whipped cream, because normally if you have strawberries and cream, you're having a like uh a whipped double cream or just a regular double cream, as opposed to a whipped cream cheese.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Uh to be fair, that was nice. What I wasn't keen on was the um sweetened bread, more like a sort of brioche bread. Overall, it was quite peculiar.
SPEAKER_00I think brioche is a bit overhyped with those things. It doesn't work that as well with burgers as people want to try and claim a lot of the time. And I think as a sandwich, yeah, it's a bit of an odd one. Like I'm guessing for things like French toast or something like that, it might work well. But yeah, it does seem a bit odd if you're meant to eat it like a sandwich.
SPEAKER_01And it only had what I would say is half a sandwich.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah. I saw a picture of it. I was a bit shocked with that as well. Where it's literally, I mean, if everyone wants to imagine you take one slice of bread, cut that in half, yeah, make the sandwich on half of it, and put the other half on top, that's what you get.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that is literally what you get, and that was the princely sum of three pounds.
SPEAKER_00Three pounds is a lot for half a sandwich.
SPEAKER_01Next to it, which I kind of regret not picking up now, was the chocolate pistachio one that they're doing this year. That was £3.60. Well, I thought I haven't tried the OG one, so I'll try that.
SPEAKER_00See, it's interesting because I was in the Marks and Spencer's garage, and in there, um, that one you've got was £3.25, and the other one was £4.25.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow.
SPEAKER_00So it's quite that's quite a large difference.
SPEAKER_01Put quite a premium on for the convenience, don't you?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, and for the pistachio one with a large premium.
SPEAKER_01But but isn't there two sandwiches in the pistachio?
SPEAKER_00It did look like it's a fair point, actually, but I don't think there is the brioche bread. Didn't look as thick.
SPEAKER_01I wonder what it is then.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, did you did you enjoy it?
SPEAKER_01Did you I really enjoyed the strawberries. The strawberries were delicious and they were the strongest flavour in there. The cream cheese, whipped cream cheese, that was fine. I just didn't like the combination with the bread. I personally wouldn't buy that again.
SPEAKER_00It's a lot of money for half a sandwich, and especially if you're not if if you eat it and you think this is the best thing ever.
SPEAKER_01Then it would have been better with cake on the outside instead of the scoop. Oh, yeah, cake makes everything better.
SPEAKER_00Exactly, yeah. Oh, that's that's a shame because as you say, for it's not not not cheap, but you tried it.
SPEAKER_01I'm glad I've tried it because now I I don't have to wonder anymore. But yeah, a little bit disappointed, it wasn't as nice as I thought it was going to be.
SPEAKER_00Probably then overhyped because a lot of um influences and everything are are bigging it up, aren't they?
SPEAKER_01But yeah. What have you tried this week?
SPEAKER_00So this week I had the Taste the Difference pork and apple cocktail sausages from Sainsbury's.
SPEAKER_01Were they cooked or were they No?
SPEAKER_00So they're like, you know, the little picnic cocktail sausages you get, though. So we're just having cold.
SPEAKER_01So they were already cooked when you got them, then?
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah, yeah. Not one you have to. So yeah, they just could point. Do they do that in other countries? Have the little cocktail sausages for anyone who's unaware in the UK or in England anyway, of cocktail sausages, little no sort of thumb size, half a thumb size sausages of questionably formed meat, um, that are very delicious, often eaten cold, they come pre-cooked and everything, and um yeah, have them with uh what I suppose we would call like a picky bits tea, like a British tapas sort of thing, picky bits tea, yeah, exactly. And yeah, just have them cold. And this is a slightly fancy version because normally it's incredibly questionable meat used for for them, and this was only partially questionable with the apple in there, and yeah, very delicious.
SPEAKER_01Did you taste the apple in them?
SPEAKER_00You could, yeah, yeah. Yeah, a bit like a normal pork and apple sausage where you can taste with apple. This definitely lifted because we had the regular and the the apple ones, but the apple ones were nicer.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00Um, very delicious. And I will say though, a little bit on the pricey side, they're £3.25 for a box where you get $18, but it says a prox 18, and we had 16 in ours.
SPEAKER_01Oh no, I know.
SPEAKER_00It has a little asterisk on it. How disappointing. I know, I know. Um, and I do think at £3.25 that's very steep. Again, for those who don't know, normally it's like a box of £40 for about two quid on the cheap one. So $18 for £3.25 is quite expensive. Um, they are part of their three for I think it's three for eight pounds packaging range, which is for all their what we've again picky bits, but like tapasy style bits um on there. So that's a pretty good deal when you get all three together because that would normally be what's that like £9.75.
SPEAKER_01Um there's only a saving of £1.75.
SPEAKER_00Yes, but they're not they're not the only thing in it. Some of the stuff's around four quid. I think when I put through all my bits, it said that I had a saving of about £2.60 or £2.70, something like that overall. So not bad, yeah. Not not bad overall. Um, but they were really, really tasty. So if you just buy in the one packet, it's probably not worth it at £3.25. But if you're having a dinner like that where you're getting a couple of things, definitely a worthy addition, I think.
SPEAKER_01Nice. Well, I'm glad you enjoyed them.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. So, yes, that is new bites, and that leads us into our main segment, the tasting grounds. It's the tasting grounds. Okay, the tasting grounds this week. We've actually got a bit of a mixture. I wouldn't you wouldn't even say there's much of a theme with these, is there?
SPEAKER_01No, there isn't. It's random bits we've picked up that have interested us, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00Either stuff, I will say one of them is something we've seen I've seen for a long time, and um never had a real reason to pick them up.
SPEAKER_01One of them is um one that I saw, and I really wanted to try it. And one of them is something I picked up because it just sounded weird, and I was interested intrigued to see what it tastes like.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah, we've got one that is definitely a slightly um different approach. But yeah.
SPEAKER_01One that's a variation on the classic.
SPEAKER_00Yes, two, I suppose. But yeah, yeah, okay, so I think we should start. We'll start with the jammy dodgers.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_00So this week we have apple and blackcurrant flavour jammy dodgers. Now, a few weeks ago we tried the was it a Yuzu flavoured jammy dodger? Yeah, it was quite nice, I think. If we remember, didn't it? Or or lemon flavour. Can't remember. Listen to that back. The you it was the problem is we tried a jaff cake of a very similar flavor, and actually, I think it might have just been sour lemon. Uh yeah, no, sour lemon actually, we couldn't taste much of them, and we do like a jammy dodger. That was it. But this one I think has a bit of a chance because apple and blackcurrant, it's a bit more of a stronger flavour to go against the short bread, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the I got these from Sainsbury's and they were a pound, which they had a lot of different flavours in there, and they were all a pound, so I think it's a thing in Sainsbury's at the moment.
SPEAKER_00And I think you get eight in a pack, it looks like. Yeah, eight in a pack. Um it says here one biscuit is a portion.
SPEAKER_01One biscuit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. One biscuit is a portion. I'd you know, highly disagree, but it says here, so the description is as with most um Jamie Dodgers, it's a shortcake biscuit, and then it says with apple and blackcurrant flavour, apple jam. That's odd, isn't it? Yeah, apple and blackcurrant flavour, apple jam. There we go. So not apple and blackcurrant flavour, apple and blackcurrant jam, but um, yeah, apple and blackcurrant flavour, apple jam.
SPEAKER_01That does sound strange, but I'm sure they're gonna be delicious.
SPEAKER_00Yes, so packaging-wise, I would say it's pretty standard jammy dodger, but they've done a big colour where it would normally be red. They've gone for a nice purple. Yeah, it is a nice purple, it's a nice purple, it's quite it's a little bit metallic y, isn't it? Just a little bit on there. Um, and then they've added where they would normally do where it says the flavour, they've added sort of sort of a cartoony um apple and some black color. They look a little bit like blueberries to be fair, but they I think they're meant to be black currants. Um, I guess the darker colour might not show up, so they've gone for that purpley blue colour. But yes, there they are, and it looks like the jam on the front of it, they have given it a very purple sheen. The jam is a little bit purpley, yeah. But it's it's it's it's not much different to the regular jammy dodger. You know what I mean? Yeah, it's it's quite red compared to what they put on the front cover, so it's definitely not the same as what they've got on the front. But it looks nice.
SPEAKER_01It does look nice.
SPEAKER_00It just smells like generic fruit, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_01It does. It does smell fruity.
SPEAKER_00It does smell fruity, the jam put putting it to your nose. But it does more just smell like uh like a fruity jam, so on there. But yes, um you said it was a pound. A pound for eight isn't too bad, is it?
SPEAKER_01I didn't think that was too bad. They're a brand. And they're a decent brand, aren't they?
SPEAKER_00Often well, the last one I think, if I'm correct, we're actually a bit disappointed, but jammy dodgers in general would be none of that like.
SPEAKER_01We yeah, we do like the original, so we'll have to see how this compares.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, okay. Should we give it a go?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00This actually had a quite a strong flavour. Apple and blackcurr might have been pushing it, but I did I did start to, after a couple of bites, get a very apple and blackcurrant squash-like flavour.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So um yeah, almost undiluted, a bit strong, but balanced with the biscuit, I thought very nice.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I I did enjoy it, and I got the apple flavour first and then the black currant. But it was nice to get the flavour. It worked well with the biscuit, I think.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I actually I almost think that might be slightly nicer than a normal jammy dodger, which has uh is it strawberry or raspberry? It has a like a strawberry jam, doesn't it? On there, which is I think sweet with sweet, whereas I quite liked that. That wasn't as sweet as the biscuit, if you see what I mean. Um on there. No, it worked very well, I think. I think it worked very well. Yeah, I was quite quite impressed with that, bearing in mind what we've tried, but it's been very mixed. Yeah, I would definitely put that as one of the higher um jammy dodgers.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I would. I I would um I would definitely buy them again. Yes, yeah, if it depend was that an offer when they were £1, or was that just a I'm guessing it was an offer because there was a load of them all at a pound, so I'm guessing it was an offer, but I I I seem to think they're only about £125 anyway.
SPEAKER_00So Yeah, so it is it is a reasonably even as a brand of cheap cheaper biscuits. Yeah. So I think that works in its favour, but I just yeah, I think I would pick them up again.
SPEAKER_01I don't often pick up like a jammy dodger or something, so no, I don't, but I quite like that.
SPEAKER_00So Yeah, if I was gonna pick one up, it might be that over the original.
SPEAKER_01I can imagine that would be very nice with a cup of tea.
SPEAKER_00Very nice with a cup of tea. Although when it's a bit cooler, of course.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's a bit hot at the moment. I'm not gonna dunk it in the glass of iced water then.
SPEAKER_00No, no, no, no, I just uh soggy, soggy biscuit.
SPEAKER_01Cold milk though.
SPEAKER_00Cold cold milk. That is a that is a good point. Oh yes, anyway, just thinking about that, I was like, oh, that'd be nice. But no scores. What are you giving it?
SPEAKER_01I'm giving it a solid eight.
SPEAKER_00An eight. That is a that is a very strong score.
SPEAKER_01I liked that.
SPEAKER_00That's good, good to know.
SPEAKER_01What about you?
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna go 7.5.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00I really enjoyed it. Um I guess I've don't often pick that sort of type of biscuit up, but I actually think I'd pick that one up over any of the other flavours I've tried so far over jammy dodger ilk. So yeah. So strong score for the jammy dodger then.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's gone down well.
SPEAKER_00So next then, I think which of the two we've got two chocolate bars. So which one would you like to pick?
SPEAKER_01The biscoff one.
SPEAKER_00Okay, we'll go biscoff. So this week we have got the biscoff milk chocolate with biscoff spread bar. And this is a it's an official one, it's the the normal biscoff, not a knockoff brand or a a sp a special buy. Um so this is milk chocolate with 50% caramelised biscuit filling. Now, if people are familiar with the biscoff bars that are out there, this is the one that actually has a spread inside it, not just bits of biscoff biscuit in there. So think like a I guess like a dairy milk caramel, but instead of caramel, you've got biscoff spread in there. So yeah, I'm excited to try this because I've seen it around for a while. This is the one I was saying, I've I've seen it for a long time, but it's quite a pricey bar, being £3.50 to £4 normally.
SPEAKER_02Wow.
SPEAKER_00For the bar, yeah. So I've seen it in Sainsbury's and Morrison's and other places like this. Wasn't Aldi at £3. And annoyingly, when I've seen it in other places, when when they're on offer, this one I've never seen this one on offer. I've always seen the one with the biscuit bits in on offer. So £3 is actually the cheapest I've seen it. And I thought for the podcast, well, why not?
SPEAKER_01We do like Biscoff.
SPEAKER_00We do like Biscoff, and packaging wise, very on brand. It's um it's a tall bar, so it's red stripe down the middle with white. Well, I suppose I'm guessing you'd say it's a white package with a big thick red ribbon down the middle, big stripe down the middle. Biscoff, milk chocolate, a photo of the cross section, it looks very appealing, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_01It does, it screams biscoff to me.
SPEAKER_00It does, yeah. If you've seen the little biscoff, the ones you get in the cafe, it's that colour scheme, and yeah, it looks very nice. And like I said, when I read it out, milk chocolate with camera's biscuit filling. Seems like a very simple thing as well. Now, three pounds is still quite a lot of money for a bar this size.
SPEAKER_01How much does it weigh?
SPEAKER_00So it's 180 grams, which is the size that the reduced all the bars are.
SPEAKER_01All the 200gram bars have gone down to 180 grams, haven't they?
SPEAKER_00So yeah, shrinkflation has I don't know if it took this, but they've copied everyone else.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think it's quite a deep bar, isn't it? Because it's got the filling inside it.
SPEAKER_00This is the thing, you don't get many. Now I'm just filling it out. I think you only get about two three you only get six rows on it, and a row has two, so two columns, six rows on it. So, yeah, it's not I mean they are quite large. I mean, not small too much, but we have got a dairy milk there, and I would say it's pretty much, as you can see there, two dairy milk squares to one of the biscoff squares.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So if you prefer the larger score, which I suppose in some ways makes sense, then you're probably gonna be preferring the biscoff style. But yes, but do you are smelling it? What is it? Does it smell like biscoff?
SPEAKER_01You can smell the biscoff, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you can, can't you? Yeah, yes, and the bar, you know, it's got Lotus, the brand that produced biscoff, and uh um printed on the bar, and it's got a uh it looks like a biscoff biscuit, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01It's got a biscuit motif on there, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00Printed onto the embossed or yeah, embossed onto the bar. So yeah, I think it looks very nice overall.
SPEAKER_01It does look very nice.
SPEAKER_00Shall we uh give it a go?
SPEAKER_01I can't wait. That was scrummy, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Delicious.
SPEAKER_01If you're a Biscoff fan, and we are, you will love that.
SPEAKER_00They definitely it something we weren't expecting, mostly because I don't think we've had much of the spread itself outside of baking when you bake like brown with biscoff spread. But it had um camelized like biscoff bits in it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, little crunchy bits in it.
SPEAKER_00Not too much though. No, no, which was it was interesting, but yeah, for me that was it was kind of perfect in its delivery. Yeah, I I thought the chocolate was nice, but it kind of didn't it was more of a delivery vehicle for the style of the show, which was the biscoff spread, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Because I think shoving your hand in a jar of biscoff spread and spooning it out is not seen as socially acceptable. So instead, put it in little packets of chocolate and you can just shovel it in, and that's scene that scene is more socially acceptable, I think.
SPEAKER_01That it it it was stunning. I I thoroughly enjoyed it. The chocolate and the biscoff and the little crunchy bits, it all worked so well together.
SPEAKER_00Right on my street, definitely. And I I will say, listeners, because this shocked us a little bit as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it did.
SPEAKER_00It's uh like I said earlier, it's a six by two thing, so you get 12 portions. Uh sorry, you get 12 squares in it, of which they say there are 12 portions, meaning one square or rectangle is considered a portion. And that that was a bit, yeah. I mean, they're wrong.
SPEAKER_01There's no way I would open that bar and just eat one square.
SPEAKER_00But that I mean, no, no, it's not happening, is it? No, it's just not, it's not, it's not even it's not even on the cards, so yeah, one square is that I do think they are taking the mick there. I agree, that's that's not on, yeah. But to to tell us that six portion, if they said that, you know, two on there. Whilst I again would still disagree, I think that'd be more reasonable to suggest.
SPEAKER_01That is definitely more reasonable, but to say you're gonna only have one square for a portion, yeah, that's a crime.
SPEAKER_00Exactly, especially when it's so delicious.
SPEAKER_01It is very delicious, yes.
SPEAKER_00It is, and again, with the packaging, everything, it feels premium. It's a night, it's you know it's quality wrapping, it feels quality, it hasn't ripped when I've tried opening it. Um it's it's nice packaging, and the whole thing is nice. Three pounds, still quite steep. But it's a premium product, it's a premium product, and I do think it doesn't take away from it that much, but it does mean that it's not it, it just can't be a staple, you know, a regular weekly purchase because that is quite high in price. Two pounds when a different ball.
SPEAKER_01You'd be having one every week, wouldn't you?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but three pounds, and that's only in Aldi, everywhere else, being 350 or above, does make it again quite unattainable as a as a regular item, but it was delicious.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it was.
SPEAKER_00And uh, how would you score it?
SPEAKER_01Well, bearing in mind the price, which is a little bit off putting, although I think I would still pay three pounds because it was so nice. I'm gonna say, because of the price, and because of the fact they've annoyed me by putting on there that there's 12 portions in there, which is a big fat lie. Yeah, I'm gonna give it an 8.5.
SPEAKER_00Plus, yeah. And I'm just gonna say this, I'm gonna give it 8.5 as well. For me, it was a nine, but the price and their cheeky portion sizes, yes, do take away from it a little bit. Now I know being a premium product shouldn't take away, but we're talking about a non-essential here. This is a it's a bar of chocolate. Um, well, I suppose they are essential, let's be honest, but it's a you know, on there, is a it it is a luxury item in the sense of you don't have to buy them, they're an extra purchase to the meals you make, and so therefore, the money spent on those is a bit of a wild west. It does feel like chocolate bars these days are just priced how someone was feeling on the day, if you know what I mean, in the office.
SPEAKER_01I agree.
SPEAKER_00Um, on there, and it is a bit of a wild west, but I don't want to reward that in my head because clearly. Clearly, we have influence, so I don't want to reward that. So yeah, knock a point, knock, knock half a point off for me because it would have been a nine, but officially 8.5, very delicious, perfect balance all round, enough chocolate all the way around. Again, more interestingly, more of a balance for what's on the bottom. And the ones we've had in the past, these stuff. Yeah, they've been quite thin, haven't they? Yeah, you've had very thin at the bottom where clearly it's been laid flat on something, and only a little bit's got underneath as it's had chocolate cord on it. This, however, they've done it, the way they've stuffed it or anything like that, was very even round there. So yeah. Delicious.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely delicious.
SPEAKER_00And then that brings us on to our next chocolate bar that we've got this week.
SPEAKER_01I've been looking forward to trying this one, I'm not gonna lie.
SPEAKER_00I have as well, and this is a limited edition, or sorry, summer edition. So I'm guessing it's limited then to the summer. This is the Calbury Dairy Milk Strawberries and Cream Frappe, which says it is crispy strawberry flavour rice pieces in a smooth cream layer. Does that make sense?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I didn't realise that when I bought it because I thought it would in my head it would be like a strawberry cream and a vanilla cream swirled together. Strawberry rice pieces.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so it says milk chocolate with filling containing strawberry flavour rice crisp inclusions. Inclusion, is it diamond, is it?
SPEAKER_01Um it was £1.75 and it's a £115 bar. And that was from I picked that up in Home Bargains.
SPEAKER_00So it's a limited edition one, because it does say that as well. Weirdly, and I don't again, branding, come on, you spend a fortune on it, these companies. You got summer edition, is what it says on one bit, and then limited edition on there.
SPEAKER_01Oh, make your mind up, Cabbage.
SPEAKER_00I know, I know. On there, and it says list the so it says, I'm just gonna uncrease this the end bit here. It goes, and this this is I'm gonna say this is irritating. Summer edition. This limited edition bar, what was this AI? Was this the intern? You know, on there. Summer edition. This limited edition bar combines Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate with smooth cream and strawberry flavour rice pieces for those summer days when you need a chocolate tree. Now the branding is very much frappe branding. Like frappe is in what you get at Starbucks and Costa cold drinks. On the front, it's very dairy milk, like a lot of their editions are. It's got the special name underneath the dairy milk, in in this case, pink and white, looks very pleasing. Yeah. And then it's got a I mean, I guess if you didn't know what a frappe was, you'd say it's like a milkshake looking thing on this, isn't it? Uh it's got like a milkshake using the pink and white, and it's got a pit a cross-sectioned piece of the chocolate on there.
SPEAKER_01We have a look. Can you see the you can, yeah. You can see this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh yes, you can, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Because it the the it's like a very light to white filling.
SPEAKER_01Filling, and pink crispy balls. Yeah, the crispy balls are quite clear on the picture. If I'd looked close enough, I would have to look at it. Yes. And actually what I saw was that. Yes, the more than that.
SPEAKER_00Which is looking like basically, when I said it's like a milkshake or a frappe, it's sort of done like a fake ice cream sort of swirl at the top, isn't it? Like a cream swirl at the top.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like a strawberry and like a pink and white swirl.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, pink and white swirl. That's to sort of signify the top of the milkshake with a straw in it, and there's a cross section. So it looks a bit like that's coming out of it, and that's what's in the filling. Yeah. Um, on there. Which I'm not saying that was intentional on there, but see, Cadbury says six of the these of their things are a portion.
SPEAKER_01Give me some more then.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so they say six are a portion.
SPEAKER_01They're um on there. I'm guessing the filling isn't as um nutrient dense or calorific as the Biscoff's bread then.
SPEAKER_00Well, I will say, when I measured them up, it was one, which was a portion of that to two of these of those things. So six of those gives you a lot more. And again, the portions, six of these, 159 calories, one of the other one, 84 calories. So you could have pretty much got two to be a very similar portion size.
SPEAKER_01I think I prefer Cabri's portions.
SPEAKER_00Now, portions do fit feel a bit more real.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But there we go. I get I wonder if the biscoff one's also trying to um stretch it out because it's a more expensive product. So they want you to make you feel like it's lasting longer. If you ever stick I mean, I don't know anyone who sticks to those portions anyway, but it's just interesting to see what these companies are telling us.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there's that is a big difference in portion size, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00It is. And the Calgary Dairy Mart, I mean, it's it's nice packaging, the purple's nice, quite iconic. It's got that very I don't know how you describe it, um, background print of the dairy milk logo of the milk being poured in when you do it. So it's like reflect it, it's metallic purple, but then there's like this flat bit which in some light you can see. And yeah, it's nice. I will say these bars, these 115 gram bars that were introduced, they are they are small, aren't they, really, for what they are. Physically size-wise, not too dissimilar to the biscolf one, but it's a lot thinner, yeah, and clearly a lot lighter.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But I will say, looking at it, reasonably well stuffed.
SPEAKER_01That the obviously things are a lot smaller, but yes, I can see a little pink ball now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So shall we give it a go?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Interesting. I don't I don't think it was bad. I quite liked it. I agree. That wasn't what I expected.
SPEAKER_01No. The strawberry balls were definitely strawberry flavoured.
SPEAKER_00They were, and they were quite nice.
SPEAKER_01And they were very crunchy, they hadn't gone soft or anything.
SPEAKER_00Which is which is always good. But I think I think I w I would I think we said off mic when we were eating it, we just prefer a strawberry cream.
SPEAKER_01Strawberry cream.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that they do in the road is it ro no.
SPEAKER_01Quality street.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, quality street roses.
SPEAKER_01All the Christmas tins that do the they do like a strawberry cream.
SPEAKER_00And I know it's not saying it was exactly that, but definitely felt like they were strawberries and cream frapping. They're leaning into that side of it. Textures, it was all nice. I liked the crisp, but I d I don't I think I think it would have just been nice if it had been all strawberry just with the crisp without the crunch.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I love a strawberry cream, and it the crunch was was nice, but I wasn't expecting it. And I I quite liked it, but again, I would prefer just a strawberry cream.
SPEAKER_00I think that's the problem, isn't it? When you when you call something a strawberry and cream, and bearing in mind they've used cream like C-R-E-M-E, not like not strawberries and cream, so it's it's feeling like it's going into that world. And that cream filling, did it say what it was? Just as a smooth cream layer.
SPEAKER_01It just says smooth cream layer, doesn't it? It's not a fundant, no, because it's not as thick as a fundant, is it? I mean it was nice. I just feel the strawberry rice balls are they I think they're trying to bulk it out using cheaper ingredients.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I agree. I think overall that was like that, and I will say they're not telling us what that cream they're just calling it smooth cream. It didn't really taste of anything. No, it didn't. It was just sort of a suspension for the other bits to sit in, wasn't it? There's a little bit of texture, but not much to it, because they're quite small chunks, which is fine. But when you've got they've they're trying to fit quite a lot in the in a small chunk, weren't they, really? When you think about it. So yeah, over overall I wasn't I didn't dislike it, but I also thought that it could be you know, could have been simplified.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00And also I don't I don't understand the crisp the ch the choice around that because strawberries and cream frappe. Now I guess in a frappe there's a lot of ice, so maybe that, but I'm trying to think what the crunch is meant to really be, because it's not ice like crunch, it's a biscuit, but it yeah it's a confused product, I think.
SPEAKER_01I think the name of it, the the strawberry and cream frappe, I don't think it actually suits it.
SPEAKER_00No, it does it a bit of a disservice, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_01Strawberry and cream crunch, maybe, or chocolate-covered strawberry and cream crunch. Strawberry crunch.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, I th I think they uh had an idea of what they wanted, which is I want to jump on the frappe sort of style trend, then didn't really know how to execute it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's it's different, it's not unpleasant, it's quite nice to eat. Yeah, it's just I am disappointed because it's not what I thought it was gonna be. I probably, although I love strawberry um flavoured things, I probably wouldn't pick that one up again.
SPEAKER_00No, I agree, as as it is. Yeah, I wouldn't either. No. Which is a shame.
SPEAKER_01Glad I've tried it because I've seen it and I did think it would be nice. But no, well, I I don't think I'd buy that one again.
SPEAKER_00And all things considered, what would you score it?
SPEAKER_01I mean, I did enjoy eating it, but it's not what I was expecting or what I really wanted. I'm gonna go six point five.
SPEAKER_00Yep, I'm gonna go six, I think. Again, as much as I I knew because my first experience to it was looking at it then and reading it on that. I knew what it was going to be based on the description with the crunchy bits and everything like that, so I didn't have any other expectations. I just as I started to eat it, realised this isn't what something I want particularly. No, again, it all was nice, but I think the identity is quite confused with it. And yeah, I go with a six because it's not the cheapest of bars, it's not a cheap bar on there. Um on it, and the flavours were fine, like you know, six is still a positive sort of thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the the flavours, I just don't think the the crispy bits worked in it.
SPEAKER_00No, I th I I agree. So yeah, six from me, six and a half from you. There we go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And that brings us into our final item, a slightly odd item of the week.
SPEAKER_01This this is a strange one, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And this is looks like they've stuck something over the they have, over the name.
SPEAKER_01Oh doesn't it?
SPEAKER_00We see that at the top there, yes. Yeah, so this is I want to try and pull it off because it does feel like a sticker, but choco caramelised popcorn hot raspberry flavour, which is caramelised popcorn glazed with a white coating with raspberry and chili flavour. Just as white coating.
SPEAKER_01It does say it doesn't say white chocolate, does it? It looks like white chocolate, and the there is pink bits all over, like a pink almost dusting on it. And chili raspberry and chili. I've never heard of that combination before.
SPEAKER_00No, but I will say, and this has annoyed me, because you know I'm always annoyed about packaging. Um, I don't even work in packaging design, so I don't know why. But they this sticker, look at it, I put it peeled off. It is a sticker.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_00It is, yeah. They've taken a sticker, why, of what I'm assuming what looks a bit like uh a slightly blown up larger version of the popcorn, which they already have printed on the front. And they've covered up half the name. So it says chocolate coated caramelised popcorn, hot raspberry flavour. Well, they actually covered up the late and coated bit, so it just said choco caramelised, and part of the caramelized was covered up.
SPEAKER_01Why would you do that? Maybe it isn't proper chocolate.
SPEAKER_00It's uh Well, I mean it's definitely not, it just says white coating, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_01It's um I'm trying to where did I oh I got it from Lidl, I picked it up in Liddle, so it's one of their sort of middle of Lidl. Something they've got in and it was off the back of a lorry or whatever. They had, I'm not gonna lie, there were three different flavours there. But that was the um most interesting, and it was £1.29 for the bag.
SPEAKER_00Which actually, considering it's coated popcorn, that's pretty cheap.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But I wonder if they've put that sticker over it, because they actually can't call it chocolate coated, because again, reading the ingredient, it literally just says white coating on the back. Yeah. So I wonder if they can't say chocolate coating.
SPEAKER_01Can't say it's chocolate, that's why they have to cover it up.
SPEAKER_00Later on, it's got white chocolate flavouring actually, that's what that's in the flavouring section. Oh, so it's but it maybe because they don't say because they say chocolate coated rather than white chocolate flavoured. Maybe that's why they can't do it. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, that's really being given that job though. Imagine you're sat there in the sat there in the factory having to sit stickers on.
SPEAKER_00Now I'm gonna say allegedly, because then I can say what I want, can't I?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna say allegedly that's what's happened. They've stuck that on the front there. But someone has stuck a sticker, stuck a sticker, very deliberately over place to sticker, very deliberately over the chocolate coated part to just make it say choco, and you can't even see the word coated. I wonder if they were all like that. And if anybody knows anybody at uh some German company, LLC Firma Vizard Limited.
SPEAKER_01Let us know if it was your job to stick the stickers on the bags of the bigger.
SPEAKER_00Oh no, it made in Ukraine.
SPEAKER_01Oh.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, if anyone there is sticking the stickers on because it's not allowed to be sold, please let us know.
SPEAKER_01Shout out to you for the patience you must have.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel sorry for you. Someone should have spotted that before, whatever that is. But that is that feels like an afterthought, doesn't it? When you're seeing it, that's an afterthought.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because because on the back, the the printed packaging has got the description and ingredients in several different languages.
SPEAKER_00Quite a few, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So it must have been decided after all that was printed that actually what's on the front isn't suitable. Maybe it's just in this country, I don't know.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, it's a good point. But well, yeah, they decided something, but the the rest of the packaging is in a slightly muted, as in flat, like hot pink colour. Yeah. Yeah, which I think really suits the style of go. It's got a raccoon on it with sunglasses upside down. Why? I don't know. But I suppose it's quite cute. And yeah, just a bit bizarre, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Uh it's very bizarre, but the the flavour's bizarre, and it's very.
SPEAKER_00Now, did you see what the other flavours were?
SPEAKER_01I did, but I can't remember. I'm gonna say there was a caramel flavour. There were two, this was the strangest flavour, which is why I picked it. There were two reasonably decent flavours, I think.
SPEAKER_00Right, okay. So they they don't just specialise in odd flavours, so that's okay.
SPEAKER_01No, no, there were there were three flavours. Um, this is the one I picked up. Um, A, because it was pink, and B because I thought the flavour was different, not sure if I'm gonna like it. I mean it is.
SPEAKER_00I don't think I've tried. I mean, I've seen like chili popcorn, but it's not normally it's normally entirely savoury.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yes so to have not just a sweet one but a fruit flavoured or raspberry flavoured as well. Here we go. Now looking at them, you've got some on here, they are quite pink, aren't they?
SPEAKER_01I think they're speckled pink, so there's white, you can see the white and the pink.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but I'd say the whole thing's very like pale pink, but there's definitely white in there and then darker speckled, what I'm assuming is like raspberry.
SPEAKER_01Let's hope that's not the chili.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, I mean it could be the chili, it's a very good point. Right. Shall we give it them a give them a go?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, let's be brave. That was nice.
SPEAKER_00Uh yes, very surprised actually.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I didn't get any chili, which I'm kind of glad about, but that was nice. It was sweet, it was nice popcorn, it was sweet because it was covered in the white chocolate flavouring, but then there was the sharpness of the raspberry flavouring on top. Worked really well, I thought.
SPEAKER_00I I agree. I I was pleasantly surprised because I didn't have to, you know, the packaging debacle. Um I I I wasn't expecting much on that, and I thought, you know, middle of little, dodgy packaging bit. Clearly, some companies had a bit of a shocker and they're just offloading it at a cheap price. I just don't think that's the case. Very nice. Now, again, I agree. I'm still not really getting any chili. No, and you're not someone who's particularly good with spice, are you?
SPEAKER_01No, I don't like anything too spicy, which was why it was a bit of a risk buying this, but actually I'm pleasantly spiced because I didn't feel any chili in that.
SPEAKER_00No, but it was nice, and yes, it's the coating is as a white chocolate flavour. There's a bit of a chocolate texture to it, but it's it's definitely more of a flavour. Um, but the but the raspberry really nice against that, definitely. It was um on there. And we did have a look at the other flavours, didn't we?
SPEAKER_01What we did.
SPEAKER_00So there's a salted caramel.
SPEAKER_01Salted caramel flavour, and I think if you look at the packaging, all of them do appear to have stickers over where it says chocolate is they've all had salted.
SPEAKER_00Well, what the salted caramel then? Because obviously that's not chocolate coated, is it?
SPEAKER_01Um yes, I'm guessing it is.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's says choco salted caramel.
SPEAKER_01And there's a picture of a yeah. So the salted caramel flavour, and then apparently this one's even weirder, which I didn't realise.
SPEAKER_00I would have thought it'd be weirder.
SPEAKER_01Hot mango and orange flavour.
SPEAKER_00But you've uh I'm not saying I've regularly seen raspberry flavoured popcorn, but I've seen that before in the shops, like a raspberry or strawberry. No, in there. I've never seen mango and orange popcorn, let alone hot mango and orange popcorn.
SPEAKER_01I I if they've got any left, I might pick some up for next time. Yeah, I get I'm not disappointed.
SPEAKER_00I really enjoyed that, but I just thought, yeah, when it went on the weird scale, I would have thought that'd be weirder because everyone has their own scale, don't they?
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, I mean, yeah, pick it up next time if someone will.
SPEAKER_01I'm guessing I didn't see the hot on that one and just saw the mango and orange and thought the hot raspberry intrigued me.
SPEAKER_00No, it intrigued me, but it's just not hot.
SPEAKER_01No, it's very nice, which is very nice, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Very, very surprised with that. Um, yeah, and so what what would you score it?
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna go 7.5.
SPEAKER_00Nice. I'm gonna go for an eight. I really enjoyed it, yeah. Um, I like popcorn anyway. Yeah, and I I like quite a sweet popcorn. I'm not a salted popcorn person, of a sweet one, and um, yeah, really enjoyed that. How hit all the things I would like. Uh, if it says chili, I would like a bit more chili, but I'm actually quite glad there wasn't much.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I am in there, yeah. But yeah, no, that would that was something different. I don't think I've ever tasted popcorn like that before, but it was lovely. It it was you know, that that would be a nice treat on a Saturday night watching a film.
SPEAKER_00Right, very nice treat. Yeah. Well, that was all the tasting grounds. And well, very thorough thoroughly enjoyable week as always. Yeah. Because let's be honest, it's always fun when we do this. Um, and that leads us on to our final segment, which is Debbie's Fun Fact. Debbie's fun facts.
SPEAKER_01I've got two fun facts for you this week.
SPEAKER_00Two you're spoiling us.
SPEAKER_01I know. Get me.
SPEAKER_00Go on then.
SPEAKER_01Well, the first one, they're they're both chocolate related because we didn't have a theme to this week, so I've got two. That's why I got to see.
SPEAKER_00Yep, go with it, go with how you feel, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so the first one is that did you know so many toberones are sold in a year that if you laid them end to end, they would go round the whole of the world's circumference, which is sixty-two thousand kilometres.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01I thought that was quite impressive.
SPEAKER_00That's quite a lot.
SPEAKER_01I like a toberone.
SPEAKER_00I love I love I love a toberone. So and that's so sixty-two thousand kilometres worth of toberone.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Wow.
SPEAKER_01That's not bad, is it?
SPEAKER_00That's a lot of triangles.
SPEAKER_01It's a lot of toberone.
SPEAKER_00That's a lot of toberone. I think I could get through that in a year.
SPEAKER_01Isn't that a challenge? Yeah, challenge acceptance.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm just trying to think, I'm like, how many is that? Because you think, well, it's probably three and a bit normal toberones to a meter. Yeah. And you think, well, you've got a thousand then, so you're on like probably like uh three thousand two hundred per kilometre, and then you times that by six, it's a lot of toberone.
SPEAKER_01I think you'd struggle because I think eating one toberone a day would be a accomplishment. I I would You know, you know, I'm not talking the little mini ones, we're talking the big ones, aren't we? So Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You know the normal sized ones.
SPEAKER_01Normal sized ones, yeah.
SPEAKER_00They they I'm I'm sure Okay, I I will concede 62,000 kilometres in a year might be a bit much. But what I will say is, did you see that this year, we saw it in Morrison's, I think it was, or it might have been Sainsbury's. They had the for Father's Day, they had the the super large one, it was fifty quid. Wow. It was big. I did I didn't get the price, uh sorry, the size of it exactly, so the weight of it, but it was massive, yeah. Fifty quid though, um, on it there.
SPEAKER_01That's a lot of chocolate.
SPEAKER_00It's a lot of chocolate. I mean I'd I'd enjoy it, I'm sure.
SPEAKER_01That would last a week, wouldn't it?
SPEAKER_00You might, yeah. Six days, six, seven days. Yeah, you can't get out of that. Well yeah, Toberone's nice. It's just again, it's on the very premium end.
SPEAKER_01It is pricey.
SPEAKER_00But I think it is nice.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, that blonde one they do.
SPEAKER_00Well, oh the the gold one. Gold one likes to delightful.
SPEAKER_01We do like that one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I do I there's something as well about having a slightly unique delivery system. The triangles on there is is is nice. The shape matters, these things.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because I know oldie do their own version, they're still triangles, they're a lot smaller, but and they cut the tops off, don't they? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's more of a wedge because it's sort of like triangle laid down as opposed to.
SPEAKER_01And then they alternate them, don't they?
SPEAKER_00They're not that's what I'm saying to wedge to make they they are nice though.
SPEAKER_01They they're they're all right.
SPEAKER_00It's just not the same.
SPEAKER_01It's just not a Toberone, is it?
SPEAKER_00No, it's not. But yeah, so that was that was fact number one. That was fact number one.
SPEAKER_01Fact number two is that Snickers is actually named after a horse.
SPEAKER_00Snickers is named after a horse?
SPEAKER_01The fat the Mars family named it after their beloved horse Snickers.
SPEAKER_00And why were Snickers called Snickers? As in the horse.
SPEAKER_01No idea.
SPEAKER_00That's interesting, because originally I'm too young to remember this.
SPEAKER_01No, you're not.
SPEAKER_00I am. Apparently they were called marathon bars.
SPEAKER_01They were called marathons.
SPEAKER_00So I wonder why they did the name change.
SPEAKER_01Why they did to make it more Americanized, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00I guess maybe yeah, for consistency. Maybe it was plea anyone out there, American, other countries, has your Snickers bar been called anything else at point now that other than Snickers. Other than Snickers, yeah, at any point in history.
SPEAKER_01Um I think we've had quite a few name changes on sweet treats in this country.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, opal fruits to is it Starburst where they is that what they are? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Opal fruits. Made to make your mouth water.
SPEAKER_00I'm too young, but that's what I've been told. So yeah. There you go.
SPEAKER_01I'm sure they were apple fruits. Well, they were definitely opal fruits when I was a kid.
SPEAKER_00Well, I know, yeah, I know that, but we've come forward a few decades and uh don't think they were when I was on there. But no, that's interesting. After a horse.
SPEAKER_01What a random thing to do, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00Very random. But they must have loved that horse.
SPEAKER_01They must have done.
SPEAKER_00I'm not gonna lie, Snickers is a good bar as well. Oh, it is for for a regular one. And they really knocked out of the park with Snickers in general because the Snickers ice creams are S tier top tier. You know, they're they're right up there with the best of them uh on there. Something about peanut caramel and chocolate, it just works, doesn't it? It just works, yeah, it really does. Um on there in many ways. But yeah, that Snickers bars are are up there. I I will say I haven't been as keen on they've introduced a few different variants, you know, with the almond instead of peanut.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um they've done the smooth, haven't they, where it's not it hasn't actually got any peanuts in it. It's got like a peanut butter thing, which is a bit odd when it's because it's not Snickers, then in the same way.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00Um, but yes, we won't get into all the Snickers now, we might try them at some point. But yes, interesting.
SPEAKER_01There we go.
SPEAKER_00There we go. Well, thank you for uh two facts this week. Sport you sport everyone, haven't you? I have. Um yeah, so thank you for that. And everybody, thank you for listening to yet another week. Can't believe people are still listening, and in a way, but we're we're very happy people are.
SPEAKER_01Yes, we are. I mean, this this is what we do. We we sit and talk about food, whether or not we recorded this, don't we?
SPEAKER_00I know, I think we we may have mentioned it before, but that's really what we were told to just put some mics in front of our faces because well and we've added a bit of a format and a bit of a structure to it, but in general, this is what we were doing. Um, maybe not together, so it's nice to be able to get some of the taste in, but we would phone up and talk about things we'd eat and so here we are, and other people are listening. It's um amazing. I'm glad other people are enjoying it. Yeah, because it looks like we have some repeat listeners, so that's always good. Yes, it is.
SPEAKER_01And if you want to suggest anything for us, please get in touch. You've got our email and you can contact us via the podcast site.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the fan the fan mail um in the podcast description. Okay, well, speak to you next week. Take care. Thank you. Bye.
